I've been writing roughly once a week for months now about the insane circus that is today's Republican Party, mostly to make fun of them. It's difficult to do otherwise; how does one write seriously about people like Sarah Palin, Glenn Beck and GOP Chairman Michael Steele? Try it sometime: failure is all but guaranteed.

Our most recent example of this phenomenon: Sarah Palin, again. The former Alaska governor and terminal dead weight around Campaign McCain went on with Barbara Walters to push her new book and covered herself in whatever the opposite of glory is. One topic she addressed was the recent cover of Newsweek featuring her wearing a tight red shirt and short-shorts that showed lots of leg. "I found it a wee bit degrading," she said of the cover, which makes you wonder why she chose to pose for it looking like something out of a James Bond scuba-diving scene. You'd also wonder why she had more trouble with the picture than with the giant block-lettered headline that read, "HOW DO YOU SOLVE A PROBLEM LIKE SARAH? SHE'S BAD NEWS FOR THE GOP - AND FOR EVERYBODY ELSE, TOO," but then you'd remember that logic does not apply on Planet Teabag, and move on down the road.

See what I mean? Making fun of these people is like shooting very large fish in a very small barrel. You just can't miss.

The problem, however, is that people like Palin stopped being funny a while ago. The prominence they enjoy in our political discourse is so far out of whack with their abilities and intentions that it vastly exaggerates their influence over a variety of very serious matters that affect each and every one of us. The British have the Monster Raving Loony Party, who are a joke and exert no real influence, and we have the Republican Party, filled with monster raving loonies who exert a tremendous amount of influence because the news media thinks we are a nation of people who like to look at car accidents on the highway, which, by and large, we are. We've been well-trained by 20 years of shock television to mistake clowns and jesters for serious people, and because of that mistake, these people's deranged opinions and deformed ideas get taken seriously.

The recent victories in Virginia and New Jersey cannot mask the fact that the Republican Party is in deep distress. The so-called "Teabaggers," organized by the likes of Glenn Beck around spurious claims that Obama is a noncitizen socialist who wants to kill your grandmother - and really, that's it for them, in a nutshell ... plus, he's black, but don't tell them that, because it gets them upset - are now the most muscular and active bloc of the GOP. They just made a run at the NY-23 House seat and managed to derail a Republican candidate they deemed too liberal. They are preparing to make a run at Florida Gov. Charlie Crist's 2010 Senate campaign, because he accepted Obama's stimulus money to keep his state from sliding into the sea, and has been tagged by the 'Baggers as not being enough of a true conservative. Smart money says the 'Baggers won't limit themselves to Florida and New York, either; they smell blood in the water, and are swimming straight for it.

In the short run, this kind of intra-party warfare does nothing but help the Democrats in 2010, especially if the 'Baggers keep knocking off viable Republicans in the primaries and handing victories to Democrats, which is precisely what happened in the NY-23 race. But then what happens? If the far right manages to completely take over the GOP, then the lunatics will finally be in complete control of the asylum. They will get coverage on every major news network, and they will be mistaken for serious people who should be listened to because, well, they're on television, right?

Internet society, as it grew, spawned something that came to be known as Godwin's Law. Basically, the Law dictates that the longer a discussion grows, the more likely it is that someone will make some sort of comparison or association to Hitler, the Nazis and fascism. It also states that whoever uses these to buttress an argument automatically loses that argument. Ergo, caution must be taken when discussing the Teabagger phenomenon, because they absolutely beg to be compared to Brownshirts and angry, brainwashed crowds with arms extended in grainy pre-war film footage. We aren't there yet, not by a long chalk, but there are far too many examples in history of groups once considered comical becoming powerful over time, and the results have never been pretty. We are not even a year removed from two presidential terms where these exact people represented the ideological core of the government, and the damage they wreaked will take generations to undo.

As digby recently noted on the excellent Hullabaloo blog, "I'm not saying that we should panic. These people are politically weak in their own right. But when I see the liberal gasbags on TV blithely dismissing this as if it's impossible that Americans could ever fall for such lunacy, I feel a little frisson of alarm. I've read too many accounts of people who, 80 or so years ago, complacently made the same assumption. And the whole world found out that under the right circumstances even the most civilized nations can throw in with the crazies."

These people have been dangerous before, all too often, and have the capacity to be dangerous again. If any additional evidence of this is required, look no further than the rally in Washington, DC, being planned by Gary Cass of something called the Christian Anti-Defamation Commission against the new legislation President Obama recently signed to bolster anti-gay hate crime laws. The rally organizers intend to denounce the new law, and then protest it ... by inciting the crowd to commit hate crimes against gay people.

Beyond that are the bumper stickers that have become all the rage, pardon the pun, on the Teabagger circuit. They seem harmless enough; a two-tiered message reads "Pray for Obama" on top, with "Psalm 109:8" below.

Psalm 109:8 reads:

May his days be few;
may another take his place of leadership.

Psalm 109:9 reads:

May his children be fatherless
and his wife a widow.

No, not so funny after all.

The insanity that is taken

The insanity that is taken for "conservative talk" is frightening to say the least. I have a relative who swears that Beck is preaching the gospel. When I have listened to him, he sounded like a rabble rouser who happens to be "UN American". 2 intelligent people... or so I thought, and yet vastly different interpretation. Where it all ends is something us Americans need to think about before it is too late.

Funny thing is if you read

Funny thing is if you read all of Psalms 109, they are condemning themselves by applying that verse to Obama.

Gotta love that

Gotta love that Digby... "Even the most civilized nation [Amercka] is susceptible to a little craziness... We are civilized, right guys?" Obomber: Show trials and inevitable executions for everyone!

Got admit, she looks pretty

Got admit, she looks pretty good on that Newsweek cover for an old broad. Can you imagine a high level, international, diplomatic meet. What are all these heads of state going to be thinking [with]? Maybe that's the strategy!!

The Republican Party has

The Republican Party has always been a band of loons using whatever they can to mask their true colors. Now, said true colors are shining bright for all to see finally and, no matter how loud and moronic and FOX supported they are, the more America sees, the more they'll turn away. I say we encourage more and more R-nuts to get out there and spout their lies and nonsense until the grenade they're holding blows up in their faces.

The problem with this train

The problem with this train of logic is that it completely ignores the corporate support that funds and legitimizes these distractions. Read "The Arms of Krupp" about how Hitler's messages were ignored until he aligned with the big money interests. It's the same history with Abramoff and Rove and Ralph Reed - "Pay for Play Outrage" - on cue, and to support the anti-progressive trends. This crowd is rabble rousing for a purpose. To defeat any progress that would cut into the status quo's primary place - first hogs , with their snouts in the public trough. If government is destroyed, we have a society completely based on consumerism and advertising. The small government cause has served its masters very well over the past 30 odd years. Look around at the landscape - we are all working harder for less, and all repeat the mantra, "I'm just happy to have a job," while your lives are robbed from you at debt point....

Sinclair Lewis said, "When

Sinclair Lewis said, "When fascism comes to America it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross." What he didn't know about was Fox media. But Adolf Hitler did--just read Chapter 2 of Mein Kampf. You would swear he was Rupert Murdoch. "We're not there yet by a long chalk"? I beg to differ. We've only just begun to name the elephant.

Excellent. Like you, I am

Excellent. Like you, I am really tired of the useless and snotty mockery that the likes of Maddow and other liberal lights throw at these frightening people. But exactly what, Mr. Pitt, do we do to take them seriously? We can take their claims seriously and disprove them factually and logically, but who is listening? What you are seeing is the true fruit of California's Proposition 13 and the anti-educational mentality that spawned it and spread across the country. Their progeny is the bunch of ignorant, ideological, and emotional child-people trying to set national (and State) policies.

Let's put our attention on

Let's put our attention on what we want not the bone handed us by those who already have it more together. Republicans are actually pretty dumb doing the bidding of the super wealthy. They make their money on our gullibility. The fake war that cost a million Iraqi lives and 3000 then 4000 American lives. And the same evil Cheney Rumsfeld even make money with every flue innoculation. Profiting from war and disease is something only the souless do. I listen to Moyers, Maddow, Oberman not the propaganda by paid conservative pundits.

DIG A HOLE CRAWL IN AND PULL

DIG A HOLE CRAWL IN AND PULL IT SHUT BEHIND YOURSELVES! I just got a jolt of impending doom... bobble head Palin appears on Oprah and the next day she says THIS http://www.truthout.org/topstories/111909vh10 The battle for who will be first lady to the othere`s VP will no doubt be harrowing BUT God help us if these 2 women team up to run in 2012 the Mayans prediction will certainly come true...not that they would win mind you it`s more the damage they`d do by taking votes from President Obama which is the same as voting Republiclown!

Well let me be the first to

Well let me be the first to prove Godwin right, because I think anyone from the nazi era would find our modern brand of ultra-nationalism very familiar. The root of the problem seems to be the ease at which Americans mix entertainment and news. Sure, there will always be some sources that are better than others, but people like Beck and Limbaugh are just circus clowns who will do anything for money and attention. The sad part is that a huge chunk of people depend on them to find out what's going on in the world. Unfortunately, I have seen this first-hand. I am a senior in college, so I am young enough to know people who have literally grown up listening to Rush. When parents use programs like his to teach their grade school children about news/politics, it is no wonder modern America is so backwards. Nobody can resist that level of indoctrination!!!! So there is a whole generation of students out there that really do believe the things that Beck,Rush, and Palin say, and unfortunately I do not see that group shrinking.

Not So Funny After All

Not So Funny After All

Dear William; Unfortunately

Dear William; Unfortunately you have completely misrepresented me and the purpose of the rally held this week. I am sure it was unintentional. You wrote "The rally organizers intend to denounce the new law, and then protest it ... by inciting the crowd to commit hate crimes against gay people." You are half right. We did challenge the law, but we never declared we would incite violence. We oppose violence. Our contention is that the law as it is written is vague and subject to abuse. Simply for opposing homosexuality an over zealous prosecutor or rogue judge can investigate and prosecute someone for their speech. Ministers must oppose homosexual acts along with all other sinful behavior like violence if they are to remain faithful to their calling to preach biblical truth. This law has a chilling effect on our liberty. Please, go back and review our press releases and compare them to our public statements. There was never any indication that we would incite violence on any one. We oppose violence, but we love our freedom of speech. I hope that clarifies both our intentions and actions. I would respectfully ask that you correct your article to reflect the facts and our true motives. Warmly, Gary Cass

Facism is real, and visible

Facism is real, and visible on the Right. All the components are there for things like the succession of Texas or the rise of demigods like Palin or Newt. It is absolutely scary stuff. They see violence as a return to values thinking. Education is for the liberals; we only need church to understand the world. Scary, scary people and many are mainstream leaders in business. Go figure...

Mr. Pitt, I believe you are

Mr. Pitt, I believe you are correct. I also think that since America is basically socialist now, ie police, fire, education, trash collection, street sweeping etal, why not just nationalize the health care - Medicare for everyone - and have it done with. After all, most everyone knows that our bought and paid for government employees enjoy free government health insurance - without strings too. As an American living outside of America for many many years, I have enjoyed 'socialized medicine. I can say truthfully, that I would NOT enjoy going back to the dark ages of American style health care!

The biggest threat to

The biggest threat to America today is terrorism..RIGHT WING terrorism.. drummed up and incited by the likes of Glenn Beck and Rush Limbaugh. And if some right wing born again Christian idiot, inflamed by their racist rhetoric, assassinates Obama, or blows up some public building and kills a lot of people because they think their rights have been taken away by this DEMOCRATICALLY ELECTED GOVERNMENT , we will see the results of the HATE and IGNORANCE that have been sowed on our airwaves - in the name of free speech!!

Gary, Do you oppose the

Gary, Do you oppose the violence our government carries out all over the world? Or does that not count because it's being done in the name of freedom and liberty?

I suspect the reason for the

I suspect the reason for the humorous attacks/comments/truths told (based in fact) is simple: We do not have a populace that 'thinks' accroding to the pundits and their Big Corporate owners. If the venue is the Comedy Channel, or the MSNBC, the information is being disseminated. What doesn't happen is the observance of once valued Journalistic Objectivity. SO I ask the question now: "Why are there Journalism Schools?", just as I asked during the previous Administration, "Why do we have Law Schools?" It can't be about knowledge, can it?

Mr. Cass, does your

Mr. Cass, does your preaching about Biblical truth also include stoning women to death for adultery or anyone else for gathering firewood on the Sabbath?

Religion in Europe is not

Religion in Europe is not getting much respect today and the use of religion to govern has brought extreme hate in Europe's history. Maybe America will wake up to this extreme hate that permeates today in the U>S. The tea baggers are the extreme and there use of religion is a serious use of hate not love.religion has always brought problems when introduced into government. Why are we surprised?

A civil war could eliminate

A civil war could eliminate these Tea Baggers.

It's interesting that people

It's interesting that people seem to confuse the NAZIs with Socialists or communists. News reports of the Tea Baggers often show people with signs alternately comparing Obama with Hitler and with communists. Even though the German National Socialist Party had "socialist" in their name, they were actually the right wing of the 1930's Weimar Republik. Their anti-semitism was, to some extent, based on the fact that many leaders of the Communist Party in Germany were Jewish.

They're White,Right and

They're White,Right and Uptight A Blush of Rush The Fire of Ire on Enraged, Bloated Cheeks A Speck of Beck Swallowed with Meat and Potatoes Indigestible In-nig-nation Rising like Righteous Bile They Holler for the Dollar E Pluribus Unum, Waltzing With God Bless America They're the Real Ones Knuckle Draggers Waving Flaggers Hate Shaggers Dipped Tea Baggers They Snort,Retort,Exhort Not With my Money...Sonny And Clearly, The Affaira With Sarah, is Just Beginning To Those Who Care I say.....Beware!

While it is easy to poke fun

While it is easy to poke fun at the likes of Beck and Palin, the people the represent are dangerous because they are afraid. Change terrifies them. The whole point of Reagan, contract with America, compassionate conservativee movement was to keep the government from making changes to the county. That is the code used in "states rights". The followers of this movement did not understand that keeping the country from changing not only hurt the country, but it made it easier for the thieves and liars to take advantage of all of us - 5 wars, $10 trillion in debt, 4 recessions and a depression, jobless rates rise, wages stagnate, health car costs rise, national health indicators fall. But to keep people helpless, just fuel the fud machine - fud = fear, uncertainty, doubt.

I think we are much closer

I think we are much closer to a takeover of the government by these fascists than many realize. The teabaggers and white supremacists have bought so many guns and bullets that there have been ongoing shortages all over. The right-wing corporate media and politicians have mastered propaganda so well that they can get huge numbers of people believe anything, no matter how ridiculous. They can get them to believe those things so strongly that they will come out to protest and bring their guns with them. Meanwhile conservative Democrats do whatever is needed to encourage the crazies and appease their corporate masters. Democrats as a whole are so scared that they can't get anything meaningful passed even with large majorities in both houses. It will just take one of these loony teabaggers or neo-Nazis to assassinate the President, and their allies in the media (Limblah, Beck, etc.) are doing everything they can to encourage this. Of course, this is what the Psalm 109:8 reference means too.

Mr. Cass: "Ministers must

Mr. Cass: "Ministers must oppose homosexual acts along with all other sinful behavior like violence if they are to remain faithful to their calling to preach biblical truth. This law has a chilling effect on our liberty.... We oppose violence, but we love our freedom of speech...." So, basically, you -- as a representative of an organized religion -- want the freedom to shame and verbally abuse people for being different from you... different from you in a way that does not affect you. This would violate the First Amendment, by establishing or endorsing a religious doctrine as civil law. It would violate civil rights law, because (as you do not seem to understand) homosexuality is not a lifestyle choice -- truly, who would choose to be the target of such hate and vitriol? And it violates the notion of simple good behavior towards others. I believe the person your faith is named after had something to say about that. And nothing at all to say about gays. Seriously, ask yourself: How does anyone being gay affect you? And if the answer is something along the lines of "It's an affront to God", well, perhaps God is qualified to take care of His own interests.

People certainly will

People certainly will manipulate quotes, like statistics, to serve their own specific agendas, but this case is definitely one that bites the users on the derriere. Psalm 109 is a prayer attributed to the Hebrew king David, in which he describes how wicked and deceitful persons speak against him. Verses 6-19 quote the "curse" spoken against David. So essentially, the Psalm 109:8+ promoters are invoking what was considered (in the time of David) a "black magic" curse against the President. Whoops and yikes--talk about woo-woo out there...

What twisted soul would take

What twisted soul would take a passage like that from the Bible for chris' sake and turn it into something evil. They like being evil, they think it's cool like the Ku Klux Klan and skinheads.

Glenn Beck at least speaks

Glenn Beck at least speaks the TRUTH , he is NOT politically correct because in order to be politically correct , you have to be a two faced LIAR like most of our politicians . If you will excuse the expression , he calls a spade a spade . I liked Obama much more so than Mc Insane because of his intelligence and clean cut appearance but all his promises during his campaign were " Double Think / Double Speak as defined in Orwells novel 1984. Conscious deception knowing full well that the dumbed down masses will accept whatever is said without question.

Godwin's Law is for deniers

Godwin's Law is for deniers of what is really going on. All anyone needs to do is read the article "Fascism Anyone?" by Laurence Britt and you will be given 14 cogent points illustrating how we have been up to our ears in fascism. Take a look for yourself http://www.oldamericancentury.org/14_pts/14ptsGOP.htm

Obama the tool, just the

Obama the tool, just the latest in a line of puppets stretching back to before WWII. This quote from Baron Nathan Mayer Rothschild sums it up: "I care not what puppet is placed onthe throne of England to rule the Empire, ...The man that controls Britain's money supply controls the British Empire. And I control the money supply." The Rothschild and Rockefeller families and their allies control the Federal Reserve and the Federal Reserve controls our money supply. All the personal income tax collected goes to the Federal Reserve (Congressional Research Service, 2006; Grace Commission, 1984); so, we enrich the bankers and the bankers control us. It doesn't matter which puppet inhabits the Presidency; they all march to the bankers' drumbeat. Look who's in this cabinet: Goldman Sachs (founding member of the Federal Reserve) and the Federal Reserve. They don't even bother to hide it anymore. These are the same entities (along with Chase Bank, J.P. Morgan and others) who bankrolled the Nazis and the Bolsheviks in Russia and plotted to overthrow the United States in 1934 and install a Nazi style government here (see "The Plot to Seize the White House" by Jules Archer, based on actual events and materials from the National Archives). Please do enjoy what's left of our freedoms and be prepared for what's coming.

"Fascism Anyone?" by

"Fascism Anyone?" by Laurence Britt lays waste to the premise of Godwin's Law that assertions that fascism is practiced in the world around are hyperbole.
