United Nations - The United States late Saturday blocked approval of a U.N. Security Council statement calling for an immediate cease-fire in the Gaza Strip and southern Israel and expressing concern at the escalation of violence between Israel and Hamas.

U.S. deputy ambassador Alejandro Wolff said the United States saw no prospect of Hamas abiding by last week's council call for an immediate end to the violence. Therefore, he said, a new statement at this time "would not be adhered to and would have no underpinning for success, would not do credit to the council."

France's U.N. Ambassador Jean-Maurice Ripert, the current council president, announced that there was no agreement among members on a statement. But he said there were "strong convergences" among the 15 members to express serious concern about the deteriorating situation in Gaza and the need for "an immediate, permanent and fully respected cease-fire."

Arab nations demanded that the council adopt a statement calling for an immediate cease-fire following Israel's launch of a ground offensive in Gaza earlier Saturday, a view echoed by Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon.

Libya's U.N. Ambassador Giadalla Ettalhi, the only Arab member of the council, said the United States objected to "any outcome" during the closed council discussions on the proposed statement.

He said efforts were made to compromise and agree on a weaker press statement but there was no consensus.

This conflict could be

This conflict could be handled nonviolently. I know Hamas is perpertrating violence on Israel, and the overwhelming force the Israeli's are using is not the answer. They could go for a nonviolent blockade and have the UN oversee the dimantling of the Hamas rockets. It would be difficult to set up, and it might not work, but right now, Hamas is the boy with a peashooter fighting Goliath.

You can't necessarily have a

You can't necessarily have a rational solution to an irrational problem. The Israeli-Palestinian conflict will end when one of the sides is no longer able to fight. Of course Israel is trying to do this the lazy Neanderthal way like Big Brother Uncle Sam.

What is the US gaining by

What is the US gaining by blocking this cease fire? Or who is gaining what by it? But I would also like to know if there was any international condemnation against Hamas firing missiles into Israel in the first place. Also, considering Israel's history, Hamas should have known that Israel would react the way it's reacting now. So for political reasons, Hamas would see a portion of their population destroyed? This doesn't mean I condone Israel's actions. However, something is going on deep down and someone is gaining SOMETHING from this. I can't help thinking of Naomi Klein's "Shock Doctrine"

Isn't it time to ask "why"

Isn't it time to ask "why" Hamas launches rockets into Israel???? We know why! Israel has held sanctions against the Palestinian people including food, water, medicine and have stolen land sand divided families. Inhumanity is not to be tolerated! Who would actually expect and why would anyone expect Hamas to stop firing rockets into Israel? Should Israel approach Palestine in respectful manner, Palestine would stop, that is the only way. The bully has to be halted! It's sort of like "I will rob and destroy you, rape you and no other country will help you!" So far it seems to be true. Shame on all of us!

There are too many Americans

There are too many Americans making too much money selling American made weapons . It's an insanity we have enabled for far too long .

Israel made Gaza into its

Israel made Gaza into its own Palestinian concentration camp - and then bemoans Hamas filling the vacuum it created. Violence compounded can never achieve peace and harmony. To heap mortal wounds on venial transgressions is a sin so great it cannot not be countenanced by any rational human.

The only reason I can see in

The only reason I can see in the U.S. blocking a cease-fire at the Gaza Strip is that a cease fire would be a good thing. The current administration cannot change its policies from evil to good at this point in its nefarious terms of office. It would ruin its reputation for unadulterated slime.

Israel broke the truce in

Israel broke the truce in early Nov. with a series of military attacks on Gaza, killing six Palestinians. This December an Israeli drone fired a missile toward a group of Gazan children killing two boys(blowing one to bits)and injuring two others.Yet another statistic representing Israels 60 years of Nakba, the unrelenting, brutal dispossession of Palestines 94% indigenous 1948 population including 33 massacres, 531 ethnically cleansed villages, and over 4 million UN-registered refugees to date.

Israeli Committee Against

Israeli Committee Against House Demolitions director Jeff Halper, on the first boat lift breaking Israel's siege on Gaza, describes how Israel's "warehousing" of Palestinians reflects an on-going strategy of "nishul," Hebrew for displacement. Halper's "Matrix of Control" analysis reveals how Israel progressively "wipes Palestine off the map". Skeptical? Read Halper's "An Israeli in Palestine, Resisting Dispossession, Redeeming Israel" and Ilan Pappe's "The Ethnic Cleansing of Palestine".Want to help? What a shock! The US ALWAYS

What a shock! The US ALWAYS blocks in favor of Israel. The superpower and it's client states push the UN around like a marble. An then when the UN asserts itself, the whole US lamestream media turns into a FoxViews clone and attacks the world view. It's all so predictable. Palestinians just are not worth anything to the US establishment. Now...if they had nice oil fields like Saudi Arabia, then they would get a way with murder, literally. Then, Israelis might would be the occupied people.

Amazing to see imperialism

Amazing to see imperialism at work, in the 21st century, personified by the lackeys that "operate" in the UN, this forum for nothing. No one has said a word - and if anyone did it has not been aired in the UN or the "press" with its distorted or fabricated news, that for months on end Israel has blatantly cut the supplies of diesel fuel and gas (let us not talk about the flour and the sugar, to give other examples) forcing hospitals to close, water pumps not to work and causing the inevitable shortages of power, water, food, hospital care, and anything else the Israelis would hate to see happen again if the Warsaw Ghetto were resurrected. Not to mention the medicines and books and even musical instruments Israel has denied entrance into the Gaza Ghetto, all in the name of the "war on terror" that fooled Americans and non-Americans the world over, to the benefit of those who control the weapons and the oil which form the cornerstone of US democracy, so eloquently delivered from the bomb compartments of US (made) planes. To drive an entire population of Palestinians crazy, with no food, no water, no sewage, no hospitals, and only the light of candles as they sit in the dark waiting for the whistling bombs, and to expect Hamas or the Fatah or whoever will rise to fight against such a fascist way of 'herding' people into utter submission NOT TO fight back only fits the arrogant minds of the Israelis and their godfathers, the US Government. One amazing thing, however, is to see how flimsy the response of the Arab nations was; maybe the wonders of Dubai have blinded them into another kind of passiveness.

to radline9: Dear Radline 9,

to radline9: Dear Radline 9, history teaches that the UN has UNFORTUNATELY become a totally biased and useless institution: remember when Nasser sent the UN packing that was supposed to guard the frontier between Egypt and Israel - and what did the UN do? They packed their bags and left, for Nasser to invade Israel (1956-7). Remember that they actually interfered with help for the Bosnians who were being slaughtered by the Serbs, the latter had retained 80% of the weaponry of the Yugoslav state, and G.H.W.Bush had engineered an arms embargo making the Bosnians helpless sitting ducks? We certainly could use a FUNCTIONING ENTITY with the mandate of the UN - but the current outfit parading as an international arbiter is utterly worthless.

Is this the last attempt by

Is this the last attempt by the Bush administration to act unilaterally in an international crisis in which the United States has failed to broker peace? An earlier comment referred to Naomi Klein's Shock Doctine, and I follow that by suggesting that it is currently in this adminstration's best interest to help further escalate this violence and destabilize the UN process for negotiating peace. We are in our countdown to the next administration and I hope that better world minds can hold the peace so as not to trigger a countdown towards expanding the conflict in the region-- at least before Obama can begin working multi-laterally to help broker other options.

Once again the brain dead

Once again the brain dead White house criminals are supporting war and killing. One can only hope for someday justice against war crimes by old fat men who never saw the inside of a uniform or certainly have never been in harms way and are getting their last throes of macho thrills by watching others die through their surrogates. So the idiots who brought us Iraq, torture, Depression, etc. think that there is probably not good chance of an impact by UN action, so we should not do anything while the palestinians suffer from our munitions' effects. Oh, and we should also listen to their ideas about solving the financial crisis. I am so tired of being shamed by what my country has come to represent and surely have high hopes for major change.

Obama is in for the shock of

Obama is in for the shock of his life. Good luck, Wonder Man.

"Alejandro Wolff said the

"Alejandro Wolff said the United States saw no prospect of Hamas abiding by last week's council call for an immediate end to the violence." Oh, right!! Of course Israel would have abided by the council's call just the way they've abided by every other UN resolution on the Middle East conflict. Obviously it must be the Palestinians' fault because the Zionists would NEVER even consider doing anything to disrupt the peace, to land grab, to kill civilians. The Bush administration gives a whole new meaning and dimension to the concept of barf. Israel has the intention of totally destroying the Palestinians the same way their good buddies the Afrikaners tried to destroy the black South Africans. (It is not a coincidence that Israel and Rhodesia were the only countries that supported the apartheid regime to the end.) For that reason they are trying to claim that a reasonable response to a big fire cracker is a hail of hellfire missles and cluster bombs. The Zionists learned the wrong lesson from the Holocaust. They should have learned that genocide is the most immoral thing that a people can do. Instead they learned how to enjoy it.

Yes, there is a problem in

Yes, there is a problem in the middle east. but who, exactly, is to blame? The Palestinians elected Hamas on their own because of their stupidity, as we elected Bush for a second term, after the Supreme Court put him in offoce for the first chaotic term. We have had to watch our country dissolve during the last eight years, and now, the Palestianians can do the same. It is sad, but true. People just are not intelligent enough to govern themselves. Stupidity, greed, lust for money and power will rule, and we, the people will suffer, as we do not have the courage, or initiative to rise up and fight the crooked, evil system.

Big surprise!!!! The US

Big surprise!!!! The US always vetoes any attempted action by the UN when it comes to disciplining or reigning in Israel. Meanwhile..the US continues to block any attempt to stop the Israeli slaughter of Palestinians. The American agenda is to protect Israel at any cost and of course Israel will (unless it does not serve her needs) return the favour. Past Palestinian leaders have tried to negotiate fair and viable settlements with Israel...all in vain... as Israel continues to reject any solution that guarantees the rights of Palestinians to live in peace in a viable contiginous state of their own alongside Israel. Israel has no desire for peace with the people of occupied Palestine...not if said peace means sharing the land they believe belongs only to them. By way of deception...sound familiar????
