The RNC and the "Magic Negro"

This past December, Republican National Committee chair candidate John "Chip" Saltsman distributed a CD to fellow party officials entitled "We Hate the USA." One of the songs on the CD is entitled "Barack the Magic Negro." It was written by conservative satirist Paul Shanklin and aired on Rush Limbaugh's radio program.

The title of the song is based on a March 19, 2007, Los Angeles Times article entitled Obama the "Magic Negro," written by David Ehrenstein. In the article, Ehrenstein makes the argument that then-Senator Obama lends himself to white America's idealized standards of a less-than-real black man. According to Ehrenstein, "For as with all Magic Negroes, the less real he seems; the more desirable he becomes."

The song is a parody of Rev. Al Sharpton lamenting the fact that much of the national spotlight has shifted away from him and now shines brightly on President-elect Obama. The song (sung to "Puff the Magic Dragon") opens with:

Barack the Magic Negro lives in D.C. The L.A. Times they called him that 'cause he's not authentic like me ... See, real black men like Snoop Dogg or me or Farrakhan; have talked-the-talk and walked-the-walk, not come in late and won.

This song is one of forty-one on the CD entitled "We Hate the USA." Other titles include "Bank of Amigo;" "The Star-Spanglish Banner;" "Mister Tan Marine Man;" and "I am Woman." At a time when the Republican Party is seeking to reinvent itself and expand its base, America is not well-served by such futile attempts at humor.

What was it about this CD that Saltsman found so appealing? What is the climate within the Republican Party that made Saltsman feel comfortable enough as one of their candidates for chair that he would openly send such a thing to fellow party officials? Finally, why do Shanklin and Saltsman feel the groups being satirized hate America? Is this another failed attempt, Γ  la Sarah Palin, to define who is really American?

Saltsman has tried to defend this "satire." He thinks that RNC members have the good humor and good sense to recognize Shanklin's songs are lighthearted political parodies. I wonder if Saltsman sent this CD to Gen. Colin Powell, Secretary of State Rice, or former Attorney General Gonzalez? If so, did they find it as lighthearted as Saltsman?

There is so much wrong with Saltsman's judgment, his thinking that this is acceptable satire, his cry of double standard, and the Republican Party's failure to condemn this vile attempt at humor that I don't have enough space in this column to address them all. Let's start with Saltsman himself.

As a candidate to chair a major American political party, Chip Saltsman should have better sense than to promote bigoted, divisive and juvenile attempts at humor. At a time when America is facing the challenges of record unemployment and home foreclosures, wars on two fronts and other crises, Saltsman should be focused on welcoming all Americans into the party and promoting unity, not division. To mock Reverend Sharpton and insult President-elect Obama does nothing to make me want to change my party affiliation.

For Saltsman to attempt to rationalize his insensitivity by saying, "Liberal Democrats and their allies in the media didn't utter a word about Ehrenstein's irresponsible column ..." could be considered childish, but I expect better from most children. Ehrenstein's column may have been a shallow attempt at analysis and wrong, but it was a serious attempt to explain the "Obama phenomenon" and far from irresponsible. Ehrenstein (who is black) was never attempting to smear black men.

What is irresponsible is conservative satirist Paul Shanklin hijacking Ehrenstein's column to create a parody that forwards the notion that Snoop Dogg, Minister Farrakhan, and Reverend Sharpton are "real black men" while President-elect Obama is less than black. What's even more irresponsible is Republican National chair candidate Chip Saltsman distributing the CD to party officials and now calling upon them to "stand up" and defend the indefensible.

The response from within the Republican Party has been interesting. Saltsman ran Mike Huckabee's presidential campaign and his former boss has come to his defense. Huckabee said, "Chip should have been more careful in his selection of Christmas gifts, but no one who knows him would ever suggest that he in any way would purposely disparage other people, ... Chip knows how sensitive such issues are. It shouldn't be the main factor in the RNC race." If this was not purposeful disparagement, I don't know what is. If bigoted attempts at humor should not be a main factor in the RNC race, what should be?

Current Republican National Committee Chairman Mike Duncan, who is running against Saltsman and others for his seat issued the following statement: "The 2008 election was a wake-up call for Republicans to reach out and bring more people into our party. I am shocked and appalled that anyone would think this is appropriate as it clearly does not move us in the right direction." For this response, Duncan has been accused by some party loyalists as "pandering to the media" and "throwing a good Republican under the bus." If Mike Duncan is pandering to the media, good for him. He's smart enough to know crap when he smells it and stay as far away from it as possible.

One of the things that is very interesting is the response or lack thereof from many African-American members of the Republican Party. Republican apologist Armstrong Williams's silence on this issue has been deafening. Former Maryland Lieutenant Governor and current candidate for chair of the RNC Michael Steele gave a very weak and safe response by stating the obvious, "Chip knows better," Steele said. "You've got to be cautious, you've got to be smart, you've got to be appropriate. And unfortunately in this instance Chip was none of those things." Former Ohio Secretary of State Ken Blackwell believes that Saltsman is a fine individual and qualified for the RNC leadership position. He is on record as saying, "Unfortunately, there is hypersensitivity in the press regarding matters of race. This is in large measure due to President-elect Obama being the first African-American elected president."

Most people are "hypersensitive" to being insulted and demeaned. As it relates to African-Americans and the Republican Party, one only has to reflect upon recent history to understand their sensitivity. The Republican Party has a history of using race to create fear and galvanize its base. Examples include the Southern Strategy, Willie Horton, the attack on affirmative action, tying Harold Ford in Tennessee to relationships with white women, and the constant quoting of President-elect Obama's middle name in a veiled attempt to make him appear a threat and un-American. With this history, one must ask, can the Republican Party ever become a party of inclusion?

As the Republican Party tries to reinvent itself and appeal to a broader cross-section of the electorate, it must come to grips with the reality that words without deeds ring hollow. The Republican Party lost control of the House, Senate and Executive Branch for a number of reasons. One of which is that over time, reality caught up with their rhetoric and the two were not consistent. For a party that claims to be reaching out, Republican National chair candidate John "Chip" Saltsman's actions and the party faithful's attempts to excuse them only show us more of the same, and the American people have already rejected that.

''no one who knows him would

''no one who knows him would ever suggest that he in any way would ever disparage other people.. .'Could you please express yourself properly, or maybe your ambiguousness correctly express that "no one" would ever suggest indeed? It is not a matter or suggesting, intelligent people will observe John 'Chip' Saltsman has IN DEED disparaged by saying this. If he did not want to disparage, he simply would NOT have done this. Carrying the hate torch by proudly keeping it burning.

It is the very title that is

It is the very title that is despicable. A "right wing" associate, second generation American with no member of his family EVER serving in the military once said, "If you don't like Bush, you should leave the country." I pointed out I once did, to fight for my country in Laos, Cambodia and Viet Nam. My son left for Afghanistan, Iraq, and Bosnia. I find it most interesting that so many on the "right" who "love" this country are, like Bush and Cheney, extremely reluctant to risk sacrifice for it. They wave their personal flag, but it's the one noting "caution" in NASCAR.

What exactly would a repug

What exactly would a repug party of "inclusiveness" look like? There wouldn't be anything repugnican about it. I like my repugs exclusive, because I like seeing them whining about being exludED. The way demographics in this country are changing fast they better get used to being on the outside looking in. Hey repugs, we'll let you take care of the complaining. Just leave the decision making to grown-ups.

Scratch the surface of the

Scratch the surface of the GOP and a whole horde of racists and bigots come out, wolves in sheep's clothing trying to wrap their words and deeds in the flag and prop them up on the cross. There is one thing honest about this whole sordid shenanigan: they do, in fact, hate the USA.

Saw the video on YouTube.

Saw the video on YouTube. Thought is was really funny. Sent it to all my friends. They all had a good laugh . Anyone who finds it the least bit offensive has a serious problem. You who are "offended" always have the option of not looking at the video.

There was a time, not so

There was a time, not so long ago- though it seems now to be in the distant past, when the Republican Party did, indeed, have a "big tent". With the rise of the true-believer, doctrinaire, Reaganite wing, that party has virtually ceased to exist. Republicans of the U.S., unite. Arise. You have nothing to loose but your shame.

Now see here, funny is

Now see here, funny is funny. I could care less who I piss off with my funny songs. All idealog-maniacs freak against humor because they have lost theirs. Now this guy is obviously uncool, but quite funny. Still this is America where we can say whatever we please. As far as I'm concerned he only represents and continues to demean the so called 'proper' point of view even more. If you take him seriously, I pity you. If you think seriously that he will lead the republican criminal family back to victory, I pity you even more.

I'm suddenly reminded of a

I'm suddenly reminded of a blatant and offensive anti-immigrant hate song I heard in the early '40's--the song probably dated to the 1920's. I was very young (preschool), and it was my first experience of offensive attacks on other people. I was given to understand it was an example of "entertainment" that was no longer acceptable in our (enlightened) times. Since the folks are not only still among us, but are still gleefully displaying their un-enlightenment. I decline to quote anything of the song, lest it be rediscovered and turn up on some Republican playlist.

Good Old Boys: Clueless

Good Old Boys: Clueless

If it weren't so offensive,

If it weren't so offensive, I'd be kind of in favor of the republicans continuing to do this sort of thing. The American people have already chosen to reject racial hate messages, and the repubs don't seem to get it. After all, they started their 40-year disastrous regime with Reagan launching his presidential campaign in 1980 in Philadelphia, MS., where Michael Schwerner, James Chaney, and Andrew Goodman were murdered in 1964. Reagan gave a ringing endorsement of state's rights. They haven't figured out the world is changing and leaving them behind. And good riddance!

It is beyond belief that a

It is beyond belief that a candidate for chair of a major political party in the US in 2008 would think it is humorous to distribute this dispicable trash. That he is a political leader, indicates how deep racism is imbeded in our culture. Thanks for writing about and exposing it. As a white male, I know I and folks like me have lots of work to do to make this a country where people of color can excel and not be denigrated. The only chance we have to pull this country out of the mess it is in is to work TOGETHER - all of us. To do this we must work to assure equality, respect and justice are the hallmarks in our communities.

The song was largely about

The song was largely about White guilt. You know, the gift to "minorities" that keeps giving all year long. What would Leon and company do without it?

I still find it hard to

I still find it hard to believe that this is the same party Abraham Lincoln once helmed. The fact that they are defending this idiot shows that they are completely out of touch, and totally unaware that the paradigm has shifted. Thank God these guys are DONE/FINISHED... And now we find out that Palin's daughter's-father's-mother is a drug dealer? I can only imagine what a nightmare the McCain "administration" would have been.

An excellent piece. But will

An excellent piece. But will any right-wingers read Dr. Leon's piece and give it the thought it deserves? My experience trying to talk to Republicans β€” any Republicans β€” is that they refuse to listen to anything other than what GOP higher-ups and Rush Limbaugh tell them to believe. They won't listen to reason. They won't ask questions. Again, in my own experience, their preconceptions and prejudices outweigh even the most logical, cogent, well-articulated argument β€” including the truth.

Why be surprised? After all

Why be surprised? After all this is the republican party. The party of Bush, Limbough, Coulter etc.

Abe Lincoln was no an

Abe Lincoln was no an inclusionist for heaven's sake. Read, America!

GOP -- Getting Over on

GOP -- Getting Over on People for 150 years. -- Other than the Emancipation Proclamation - which, by the way only freed slaves in "states in rebellion" and was designed entirely to cause widespread confusion there - the Republican Party has NO, ZERO, history on the side of human rights. The real question is why Powell and Rice and the other "house workers" continue to play.

"There is so much wrong with

"There is so much wrong with Saltsman's judgment, his thinking that this is acceptable satire, his cry of double standard, and the Republican Party's failure to condemn this vile attempt at humor that I don't have enough space in this column to address them all." Given the Republican Party's failure to condemn this "vile attempt at humor," I'd say that Saltman's judgment about the true character of his audience is on target.

LIGHTEN UP!!! This is what

LIGHTEN UP!!! This is what gets attention in the press after 8 long years of treasonous disservice to the United States of America where the republican hypocrites stole America blind as they lied and murdered their way across the globe? We need to press for criminal charges against the people responsible for our current situation. As to the songs... in the words of another great black man: "I PITY THE FOOL that has no sense of humor!". In truth Obama IS less than black... he's half white! Now let's get back on track and pursue the thieves.

It just wasn't funny, and

It just wasn't funny, and for that there is no excuse--only blame.

WTF! Seventy-eight years of

WTF! Seventy-eight years of listening to minorities being disparaged with lyric changes to popular songs. Who are these people and what are they doing here?

A Chip Saltsman victory

A Chip Saltsman victory would be the death knell of the GIP.

"Our enemies are innovative

"Our enemies are innovative and resourceful, and so are we. They never stop thinking about new ways to harm our country and our people, and neither do we." β€”Washington, D.C., Aug. 5, 2004. Didn't the Republican-est Republican say that? And how popular is he? Ultimately, reality always sets in and we can be thankful for adverse conditions coming to fruition and making fertile soil for new, positive growth. Hopefully Sarah Palin and guys that can't even make up an original melody to try nd put the hurt on someone are continuing to put some serious dents in any thoughts about advancing or joining their "party" - and all of our collective ignorance

Nixon's southern strategy

Nixon's southern strategy had racism at its core. Use the hatred of the southern whites against the Democratic Party that dared to pass the civil rights act. Reagan, Bush, Rove, et al have eagerly embraced this racism and never was it more visible than during the recent Republican drive for the presidency when the McCain-Palin rallies sounded like Ku Klux Klan rallies. Tolerance of people like Saltzman is tolerance of racism and all that that entails. Whether Saltzman has a flag in his lapel or not he is not loyal to this country, and to make fun of men and women of color who are dying for their country while he prances about in Washington with his white chums shows a man with no principals and no heart.

Nice going, people. Stay

Nice going, people. Stay focused on questions of "race". We have a mixed-"race" President-elect, and an increasingly mixed "race" populace, and scientific research has shown it all up for minor mutations to keep people healthy in varying light conditions, and basically, anybody who doesn't live in a hamper has figured out to judge people as individuals rather than as a color group.. -But please, don't let reality get in the way of letting the Repubs distract you. Yeah, keep getting hysterical about "race", while the wealthy of all "races" are waging a real, live, class war to stomp you flat. Just say "moo", and go see the nice man with the sledgehammer at the end of the chute.

Instead of getting upset

Instead of getting upset about this collection of schoolboy nonsense, we should get angry and activated to do something about the past eight years of high crimes and misdemeanors for which the outgoing gang of thugs may get not even a slap on the collective wrist. Instead of carrying on about some stupid not-funny insults to the President-Elect and other people of color, start raising the cry for criminal investigation, prosecution and real punishment for prisoner torture and rendition, election crimes in Ohio and elsewhere, illegal wiretapping, etc, etc, etc. If the people in this country could believe that law breaking is punished - even if the law breakers are NOT poor and black and powerless - we could probably "get on with our lives" and deal with some of the many messes the criminals in the White House have created.

Huckabee sounds really quite

Huckabee sounds really quite clueless doesn't he? A whole CD of mean songs with a mean title is sent out in December and he defends it . Where is the usual screetching about the War on Christmas? Certainly this CD is a form of battle cry, send out for a holiday that Huckabee would no doubt call Holy. Of course Huck is not clueless but he hopes that the bitter masses are and that their induced anger prompts them to vote for him.

Just as it has taken

Just as it has taken Democrats 40 years since the 1968 debacle to wander in the wilderness before finally getting their act together, I am afraid Republicans are doomed to do the same until they rediscover their genuine soul again. Once upon a time, there were Republicans who were moderate or even liberal on social issues, but who were more cautious on fiscal issues or simply interested in change at a slower pace. Those folks were driven out of their own party, which is a pity, because they are needed now. The issue of race pervades this country in a way as invisible as the air all around us. We take it for granted, so grappling with it seems so trivial, yet how can something be trivial when people have died on account of race? Laughter releases tension, which may be why Mr. Saltzman thinks this is funny--bodily function jokes are also funny, but they are not appropriate, either. Mr. Saltzman is running for the chair of the Republican party, not class cut-up--let's hope the next GOP chair has much better judgment than Mr. Saltzman has shown.

I'm surprised at the

I'm surprised at the somewhat hostile response to Wilmer Leon's piece. Some humor is more or less or not funny depending on where it comes from. This is not to say only jews can make jokes on jews. But when an obvious racist makes a joke about those he is racist to, I don't find that funny because it is lacking of a certain lightheartedness which is necessary to laugh. Certain comedians can be extremely mean and crude and cruel, but the line is crossed when one feels any kind of contempt for the subject of the joke. Therefore, it is shocking, given the history of this country and of the GOP, that these people should be circulating this king of tasteless material. It's macaca all over again. They know what they're saying and it's a wink wink between white guys. And of course, as even some commenters here suggest, black people who point this out are professional victims and white people suffer from white guilt. As for the non-importance of race in America, I'd love that to be true, but it is important. And it is part of the economy, of health care, of the war, etc. So it does need to be addressed. It's all about respect in the end. Respect for others, for oneself. In the end, our current troubles: health care, the economy, the wars, energy, the environment, stem largely from our lack of respect of others and of our milieu.

The republic ants are just

The republic ants are just trying to spew racism and hate in a cute new humorous way. Who could blame them for that? Finally, they are digging their hole so deep, they will die in it. A lot of people don't get it. We didn't really elect a black president. We elected an American who was fit for the job.

With tactics like these the

With tactics like these the repugs can expect to stay in control of Utah and Alabama for a long time! The United States is another story.

Treating racist ridicule as

Treating racist ridicule as satire is in keeping with a very long, frequently denied and brutal racist US history. The big white tent, less obvious than the coned white sheet was used at critical points to put uppity Negroes back in their place. Magic Negro? No. Negro who does not fit the (criminal, Uncle Tom or buffoon) profile. Scientist George Washington Carver was responded to with ridicule when he addressed the US Congress regarding his discovery of 100 uses of the peanut. Paul Robeson was greeted with satire, as he tried out for the Rutgers football team, and rejected as he auditioned for the chorus. First Blacks, as well as well as outspoken Blacks, in many social, civic and professional situations were and continue to be likewise greeted with similar words and acts of satire/ridicule. We are presently most unfortunate to be living in a cycle in which the very President and his former President father are on record for celebrating and guffawing publicly with the purveyor or this racist venom.

The whole Al Sharpton thing,

The whole Al Sharpton thing, the Republicans, and people in general need to get past the whole "real negro" vs. "half-negro" vs. "magic negro" thing. This is idiotic, stupid and backward-thinking. When is race simply not going to matter? When will we humans mature to the state where as the good Dr. MLK put it where people are "judged by the content of their character and not by the color of their skin"? Don't we get it yet? C'mon, I mean really. This whole thing is just childish and stupid.

To "Scratch the

To "Scratch the Surface": Your description of the GOP leadership and party in general is so "spot-on"! "The GOP is a whole horde of racists and bigots, wolves in sheep's clothing trying to wrap their words and deeds in the flag and prop them up on the cross." I believe that "Chip" is the perfect person to 'lead' their party because he accurately reflects the leadership of the party and their chosen spokespersons like, Limbaugh, Colter, etc.

Where is the fine line

Where is the fine line between comedy and hateful expression? Why confuse more people with sardonic remarks? I don't think hatred is funny in any context! I promote zero tolerance to bigotry.

This is an interesting

This is an interesting article that raised many thoughts. One of the hallmarks of Republicans these days is that they have no understanding of humor. What they feel is humor is a put-down, usually as mean and, yes "demeaning" as possible. Mr. Bush is always so confused when he makes what he thinks is a joke, and it offends everyone but his base (who think he's a really funny guy). David Ray Griffon gave an interesting speech discussing a theologian's new paper on how being American is a form of faith in this country. This fits in well with Republicans using the American faith to decide who's in and who's out, as fundamentalists tend to do.

We just can't get away from

We just can't get away from the old "one drop rule", can we? In slavery days one drop of African blood made you black, a commodity to be bought and sold. A century after the end of slavery most white Americans can still see only skin color as a person's most defining characteristic. Obama's mother was a white-skinned Anglo-Saxon. He is a product of both his parents.
