Pelosi's Power Move Leaves House Republicans Fuming

House Democrats are poised to approve new rules that will significantly increase their authority while taking the bullets out of the few legislative weapons Republicans have in the lower chamber.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) has approved the changes from the last Congress, when House GOP members frustrated their Democratic counterparts by winning over two dozen amendment battles on the floor.

Pelosi's move has set up a divisive mood on the first day of the 111th Congress, which Republicans say runs counter to the tone set by President-elect Obama.

Republican leaders intend to fight the rules changes, which would curtail their ability to delay legislation by forcing Democrats to take politically difficult votes.

"This is not the kind of openness and transparency that President-elect Obama promised," the GOP leaders wrote Monday in a letter to Pelosi.

Republican leadership aides say the changes will make it easier for the Speaker to run the House and protect vulnerable House Democrats.

But Democratic leadership sources dispute the GOP characterizations, noting that Republicans will still have an opportunity to offer an amendment to bills on the floor, though they won't have the ability to invoke an arcane rule that would in effect kill the entire underlying measure.

Democrats say GOP assertions that Republicans would not be able to offer a "motion to recommit" are false. They say they are removing the "Catch-22" that Republicans have exploited to force embarrassing votes on issues such as gun control and illegal immigration.

The rules package also calls for the end of six-year term limits for committee chairmen. This move is not popular with younger members, but panel chairmen have been pressing for the change since Democratic leaders surprisingly kept the six-year limits intact in their rules package for the 110th Congress.

The change means that House chairmen could be in their posts until they retire or die.

The six-year limit was initially adopted after House Republicans took control of the lower chamber in 1995. That ended the seniority-based system that Democrats had embraced for decades.

Democratic aides argue, however, that term limits under Republican rule meant that the committee member who raises the most money would be rewarded with a chairmanship.

Seniority was a factor in the awarding of GOP committee chairmanships between 1995 and 2006, though fundraising is seen as vital on both sides of the aisle. For example, the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee and the National Republican Congressional Committee will apply political pressure on members who are lagging in their committee dues.

Democrats were scheduled to meet Monday evening to discuss the rules package before an anticipated vote on Tuesday. Democratic aides at press time said there could be changes made to the package before the vote.

Republican leadership aides expect that their members will strongly contest the rules package.

Opposition tactics could include offering motions to adjourn and walking out of the House chamber.

When will the Dems and O

When will the Dems and O finally realize that no matter how "nice" they play with their Republican counterparts in Congress, the Repubs are always looking to cripple, demoralize, demonize and destroy them! They will all be better off when they adopt the take no prisoners attitude their enemies across the aisle always follow. Wake up Dems and show some cajones and fire...the Republicans will NEVER play nice with you!

Oh Boo Hoo, those mean old

Oh Boo Hoo, those mean old Democrats are picking on those poor, little Republicans. Geeez. I guess the Rs were not reading the news the last 8 years, when they sidelined the Ds out of almost all participation in Congress. What incredible, freaking hypocrisy! Talk about a nation of whiners.

Substance, please! Other

Substance, please! Other than the committee term limits, I was never able to learn what else the Dems are planning on throwing at the Repubs. I had know info to decide for myself if what they are doing is reasonable, partisan, or something else.

Once again Pelosi is proving

Once again Pelosi is proving that she does not intend to share power with anyone, not even the President. She has made clear with her actions and her words, that while the leader of her party has expressed a desire for "working across the aisle for the benefit of the American People", Nancy Pelosi has no intention of doing so, thus protecting her power and her corporate supporters. The sooner the Dems in the House see this cow for what she is - a power hungry, manipulative liar - and strip her of the Speaker's position the better. (And before anyone goes after me about being sexist, understand I am a 56 year old WOMAN who is fed up with the old guard Dems who have been just as destructive to the governance process as the Republicans as well as with women who get power and then set out to prove not that they have a better approach, but that they can be 10 times meaner in spirit than their male counterparts!) With the attitude this woman has exhibited since Obama started his run for the Presidency to this act, Pelosi seems to be determined to undermine his goals and agendas in favor of hers, and since SHE WAS NOT ELECTED BY THE PEOPLE OF THIS NATION, AND HE WAS, she should sit down, and shut up! She sold out this nation when she took impeachment off the table, and she does not deserve the position she now holds. It is time Obama made this very clear to her and asks the other members of the House Democratic Caucus to consider replacing the Speaker on grounds of incompetence and complicity in the acts of the Bush Administration.

After the treatment of the

After the treatment of the Democrats by the Delay/Hastert/Frist Republicans. I'd offer them tents to meet in and let them know I'd call them, and not to call me.

Eh, too bad. The Republicans

Eh, too bad. The Republicans had their chance and screwed everything up. Now, the Democrats have the tough job (AGAIN) to pick up all the pieces and put America back together. It's nice to finally see some bravado from the Dems.

I think the last post has it

I think the last post has it right - the Republicans have never played fair. They showed us what tactics to use and now we should use 'em!!! They deserve no sympathy or respect after what they've been up to since 1994. We need every advantage we can get to move our agenda though Congress FAST before more sleazy plans hatch.

Obama's call for

Obama's call for bipartisanship [sic], which entirely ignores his rather huge progressive mandate, is NOT binding on the Congress. If the last 8 years are an indication of what bipartisan should look like, deep sixing that crap is a major, and much needed, first step.

Funny thing. We'll clean up

Funny thing. We'll clean up their messes while they kick and scream and obstruct and protest. Then once the messes are clean and the economy is storming along again the people will vote for some idiot republican promising them the moon.

Our system of partisan

Our system of partisan politics is part of what is ushering in the demise of America as it was defined in our Constitution. All voters who are required to specify party affiliation when registering should identify themselves as independents. They should then educate themselves regarding those running for political office and place their votes based on information they have regarding past history of the candidates and on where they really stand on the important issues, regardless of which political party they belong to. There needs to be more interest and discussion of political issues among the American populace to assist in this self-education process. Do not rely on the mainstream media for information upon which to base voting decisions - they cannot be trusted, and in fact are party to the problems we now face. Use the Internet, and refer to non-traditional and international media to inform yourselves. We, the American people, need to elect leadership that moves us away from the corruption that has become endemic within American politics and promote those who will fight to bring transparency and openness to our Government. This means no more lies to justify illegal military adventurism, no more legislation that promotes the goals and aims of those pushing for global corporatism at the expense of the American citizens, and no more legislation based on lies and fear mongering that curtail American freedoms.

No respect for any of them.

No respect for any of them. They ALL kept the wars going, the money flowing to the wealthy and the Military-Industrial Complex, and they are nearly all oath-breakers for refusing to protect the Constitution they swore to defend. By taking impeachment "off the table", Pelosi showed herself to be a NeoCON toady, just as anxious as they were to destroy the rule of law in this country. If I see the present outgoing administration in shackles and orange jump suits, maybe I won't begrudge the Repubs their whinging. Chances of that happening: about zero. So, Congressional Republicans, please shut the f$%* up. If you left it up to me to set the agenda, they'd be building guillotines. -And Congressional Democrats, shut the f$%* up, too. You are complicit in all the evils of the last eight years, and spineless to boot. When it should have been time to abide by the Law, and loudly decry a criminal administration, AND IMPEACH THEM, all but a handful of you slouched away. Oh, and speaking of a spineless agenda, I presume that REPEALING THE SO-CALLED PATRIOT ACT is "off the table"? Congress, you have, as a group, tatooed your "legacy" into the skin of Iraqi kids with incendiary munitions. Expect no mercy from hell.

If Pelosi is taking action

If Pelosi is taking action to insure that the majority rules it is a good thing. The people in the majority in this country have been paying the majority of the taxes and paying the majority in lives lost in Afghanistan and Iraq while the minority in power has looted the treasury and devastated the economy and engaged the country in needless wars to be fought by other people's sons and daughters. Time for the majority to rule for a change.

The Republicans are steeped

The Republicans are steeped in, and committed to, power-grabbing, money-manipulating, and an extremist ideology dedicated to depriving citizens of their basic rights and livelihoods. They are definitively subversive, even as they wrap themselves in the American flag, the ultimate camouflage. They are ineducable -- the whole planet will pay for their intransigence and ignorance, a deadly combination. Pelosi is to be hailed as a heroine for doing everything possible to corral and curtail them. "Bipartisanship" be damned -- we have only one major party, a handful of minor ones, and a conspiracy masquerading as a party that must be keel-hauled to keep the country from going under.

I Agree with "Orwell" -

I Agree with "Orwell" - where are the details that would make this a valuable informative article rather than partisan-baiting?

It is not the job of the

It is not the job of the speaker of the house to represent other representatives. It is their job only to represent the people in the districts they were elected in. These thugs in both parties think they are in some kind of gang war and are completely forgetting who put them in Washington. Their petty elementary school bickering although entertaining to the masses gets nothing of any worth done. I'm surprised any legislation at all gets voted on in one session of congress. How about this... someone proposes a bill...congress men and women read the proposal... then vote on it based on how their constituency would benefit or not. Its pretty simple and its what they were elected to do. What's all this other crap.

I don't think Pelosi and

I don't think Pelosi and Reid realize how closely they are associated with the failures of the Bush era for compromising or agreeing with the Republican minority on the biggest issues of the day - over the protests of the 2006 voters. This power grab by Pelosi smacks of Bush, Cheney, Blogojevich and every other power drunk politician who has lost touch with the average citizen. Instead of beating the GOP at their own game, we need to change the system wholesale. I hope the people crying for "change" today, continue to get active and impatient with horse-traders like Pelosi. Forgetting even Obama, we need to continually grow in strength and recognize that big D Democrats are every bit as bad as the crony Republicans. Derail the runaway train in DC! They are fighting the people to keep power after spending several future generations worth of tax revenue.

Why is this crazy woman

Why is this crazy woman still in Washington? Is this a bad hair day or what?
