President Bush Saved US Lives? That's Only More Karl Rove-Style Spin

George Bush, still President, is engaging in a legacy tour of media outlets. This comes despite his earlier having said he did not know how history would judge the Iraq war "because we'll all be dead."

Actually, many people are already dead because of Bush, and that is the point to keep in mind when he talks about his legacy.

Among the themes Bush is striking are that through action at home and fighting "them" over there, not over here, his administration stopped terrorist attacks and prevented another 9/11. There is a surface plausibility to those claims, as there has often been with the messaging served up by the Karl Rove spin machine. But let's look beneath the surface of the assertions.

Bush stopped terrorist attacks? Yes, some of the many alleged plots cited by the White House probably would have matured into attacks had not the U.S. intelligence community acted. Many were more aspirational than operational, and others were the pure inventions of FBI informants. (In the Miami Liberty City case, an FBI informant apparently bribed people who previously had no interest in Al Qaeda. When they swore the oath to Osama Bin Laden, they were then arrested for doing so.)

But even if taken on its face as true, should having stopped terrorist attacks earn this President a Harry Truman-like reassessment down the road? I can attest from firsthand knowledge that the Clinton administration stopped numerous terrorist operations that would have resulted in American deaths. Yet I don't hear Bill Clinton running around boasting about that. Clinton has other things to lay claim to - a balanced budget, huge job growth and eight years without a major war. If you don't think the Clinton administration stopped a major terrorist attack in New York City, you might want to talk with the blind sheik, who was involved in a plot to blow up the United Nations, the Lincoln and Holland tunnels, the George Washington Bridge and a federal building housing the FBI. But that would be tough to do because Omar Abdel-Rahman is in solitary in a federal prison in Colorado.

There wasn't a second 9/11? That's obviously true, but it misses the point. First, we must remember that Al Qaeda terrorists are patient, deliberate planners who often wait years between strikes. Second, there was the first 9/11 - and it happened on Bush's watch. Without rehashing the entire 9/11 Commission Report, the historical record is pretty clear by now that Bush did virtually nothing about the repeated warnings to him that those cataclysmic attacks were coming. Unfortunately, I can personally attest to that as well.

Bush saved American lives? Tell that to the families of the 4,200 U.S. military personnel who have perished in the needless war in Iraq. While they served heroically and deserve the great thanks of the American people, the tragic truth is that they were engaged in a war we should not have been fighting and which was sold to the Congress, the media and American people with exaggerated and even false claims.

Beyond the needless American deaths that are Bush's legacy, there are the Iraqis we almost never think about. Iraq Body Count is an ongoing human security project that claims to maintain "the world's largest public database of violent civilian deaths during and since the 2003 invasion." They say their data "encompasses noncombatants killed by military or paramilitary action and the breakdown in civil security following the invasion." Currently, their estimate - conservative when put alongside other totals - is that between 90,253 and 98,521 Iraqis were killed because George Bush invaded that country. That's thirty 9/11s.

Let George Bush keep pushing the buttons on the spin machine. That cannot change the facts. His administration's actions on terrorism, including Iraq, killed many more Americans than U.S. intelligence agencies saved in the past eight years.

Of course Bush said "we'll

Of course Bush said "we'll all be dead" with respect to being judged on Iraq... he's been working steadily since 2001 to increase those odds!

Thank you Richard Clarke for

Thank you Richard Clarke for telling the truth! I stood up for you back at the time when you testified for the 9/11 Commission, as a couple I was standing behind in a Trader Joe's was trashing you verbally. So I put in my two cents, and an argument ensued, and it nearly got ugly. All Americans should read this article, do some thinking, and start writing, calling, or sending emails to Pelosi to allow investigations by Waxman, Wexler, and Kucinich into the criminal activity of Bush/Cheney, the first openly Fascist co-Dictatorship of the USA! We Americans need to see these two thugs held accountable for their many crimes: theft of the Treasury, treason, crimes against the Constitution, crimes against humanity!

Mr Clarke Thanks for your

Mr Clarke Thanks for your concise assessment of the misleading attempts of our soon to be 'former President'. The sad truth is that the Rule of Law is breathing her last and will be the ultimate unresurrectable victim, with all the other casualties, should no accountability be exercised to those who have stabbed, molested and raped the Constitution. Like Dr. Tillotson once said β€œIgnorance and inconsideration are the two great causes of the ruin of mankind.” POH p.s. I hope that you are being considered for a position in the president Obama's administration.

Al Qaeda didn't need to

Al Qaeda didn't need to attack us again during Bush's administration. Bush was already killing more of us and wasting more of our resources than they could ever do with another attack. So why would they waste their efforts and resources on another one while Bush was in office?

I hope Richard Clark keeps

I hope Richard Clark keeps talking. I hope others will come forward to tell of the atrocities of the Bush administration. We need more brave Americans like Clark.

Bush/Cheney constantly

Bush/Cheney constantly mention "no new attacks since 9-11." Number one, the attack happened on THEIR watch because they "ignored" the signals. And, take a look at our country? No new attacks? Attacks come in many ways. Why should the "terrorists" bother. Bush and company have near destroyed us from within. Kruschev was right.

Perhaps Bush believes the

Perhaps Bush believes the end of the world is coming in 2012!

I'm really encouraged by the

I'm really encouraged by the frankness with which the corporate media is (finally!) assessing the crimes of the Bush administration. This article by Richard Clarke in the NY Daily News is an outstanding example of truthtelling from someone who was privy to the highest levels of intelligence. Thanks for reprinting it, Truthout!

What Bush, Cheney and the

What Bush, Cheney and the rest of the criminal cabal should be remembered for is engineering what was likely a black flag operation that resulted in the 9/11 attacks. They should also be remembered for using blatant, bald-faced lies to get us into one illegal war (Iraq) and another very questionable one (Afganistan) based on totally false pretenses. They should be remembered for the deaths of the US soldiers in those wars, the deaths of the civilian non-combatants there, and those who died as a result of the 9/11 attacks. And they should be remembered for destroying the careers of a number of professional and patriotic Americans because they would not parrot their lies. Now it is Obama's turn - lets see if he sweeps all of this under the rug, or if he pursues justice where it is due.

Keep in mind, Bush's

Keep in mind, Bush's Abstinence Only Sex Education Program has caused more unwanted pregnancies and thus more abortions. So much for his Pro-Life stance.

We're living a LIE, as long

We're living a LIE, as long as we pretend there's nothing to bring these criminals to trial for! That makes a mockery of all law! It will be continually "discovered" as the years go by, just how much damage was done, how it was done and why! These unstoppable trails of "discovery" will continue to disgrace all attempts and claims of law enforcement! Meaning that we will, heretofore, have only the ephemeral rule of moment to moment political mores to rule by. Since that is the equivalent of dictatorship, that is all we can have, and along with all that goes with it, we will continue our decent into a world of hellish rule similar to that of age old nation states. No matter whether the dictator be benevolent or not, our past glories cannot be supported by it. So the question is not whether we can survive such trials, the question is can we really abide by a rule of law? The answer we're giving by our present course of actions, is no! Obwon

A welcome alternative to the

A welcome alternative to the revisionist propaganda trying desperately to convince people that the illegitimate 'administration' isn't composed of war criminals. It is specious reasoning to state that, because the Empire State building hasn't been toppled, somehow the 'administration' gets credit for fighting terrorism. Listen--my right shoe is an anti-tiger shoe. You don't see any tigers around, do you? Therefore I get credit for saving you from a vicious tiger attack.

things are too bad by too

things are too bad by too many multiples to rewrite history. Part of the 'rewriting' is placing everything in this context of the negatives being overwhelming natural disasters before which we are totally powerless, remember Palin's 'economic tsunami'. It is also setting the stage for Jebb as the messiah who can finish G's bad job--watch for this. This is the meaning 'of all be dead' because only most of the now-living can elect Jebb.

Yeah, Mr. Bush will always

Yeah, Mr. Bush will always be known as a man of honor and wisdom who treated all people fairly and honestly and who would never consider things like spying on Americans or torturing anyone or even thinking about breaking Rule of Law or doing anything that might raise concerns about their Constitutionality. -- Yes, he will always be known as The Compassionate Conservative and a modest man who did his best for the poor and underprivileged of this country. --- NOT.

Bush can spell "legacy"? --

Bush can spell "legacy"? -- He's now proving himself, with this "tour", while, we might remember, Americans starve, as lacking in taste as he is in intelligence. His tour should start and end as an inmate at Attica, next door to Chaney and Rumsfeld. -- Has any other President [sic] ever done such a thing?

Good news !! Only 98,000

Good news !! Only 98,000 Iraqis killed since March 2003 in military violence and sectarian violence? And this includes the victims of criminal violence as well? That's fantastic -- by Iraqi standards. How do I figure? Well, Saddam was killing civilians at an average rate of about 10,000 per year for most of the past thirty years, according to credible human rights groups. His killing had its ups and downs -- he killed nearly 100,000 in the year he gassed the Kurds, 1988 -- but overall his regime is thought to have averaged about 10,000 per annum, or 300,000 for the 30 year period. These were all victims of his seven security services. Although most were political murders, it is reasonable to assume that some of these victims were also ordinary criminals. Many were tortured severely before execution. Add to this the 1,000,000 or more Iraqis and Iranians killed after Saddam invaded Iran in 1980,(a very conservative estimate, the true figure could be 30% higher), and the 60,000 or so Kuwaitis killed during 1990 and early 1991 after the Iraqi invasion of Kuwait. So Saddam's total body count -- including some Iranians and Kuwaitis, but mostly Iraqis -- was about 1,360,000 over the last 30 years of his rule, or about 45,333 per year. By this calculus, the number of Iraqis killed over the last 5 & 3/4 years would have been about 260,666 if the period had equalled Saddam's averages for 1973-2003. By this calculus, the U.S. invasion of Iraq has saved about 162,145 lives. Hooray for George W. Bush!

I'd like to see the Bushies

I'd like to see the Bushies brought to justice but Obama can't afford to as a "practical" matter of getting Republican support for his domestic agenda, jobs and health care. More importantly, Obama is a pragmatist and centrist and I think he lacks the passion for the Constitution even though and maybe because he's taught Constitutional law which is full of compromise. The canaray in the coal mine for me to assess the outlook of this new administration is imbued in one word: Blackwater. How he deals with this mercenerary army owned by a RIGHT wing Christian fundamentalist and which contributed heavily to the cost and the mess in Iraq will say a lot about the real future of the country. Rome fell when the Praetorian guards became the emporers.

AND IF NOT DEAD, DUMB, OR

AND IF NOT DEAD, DUMB, OR POOR........ If we are fortunate not to be killed in one of Bush's many wars, we may be one of his uneducated in his poorly run "No Child Left Behind Schools." Or we may be a victim of his economy, or of his lack of medical care, or .............

To Robert Pool: the Iraq

To Robert Pool: the Iraq Body Count includes only deaths reported in the media (and I believe the IBC requires at least two independant reports as well). Most deaths are, of course, unreported. The IBC is an absolute baseline; more sophisticated surveys reports much higher numbers of deaths, running close to a million. It's likely that Bush has been killing like two or three Saddams. But even if he has, indeed, been only a third of a Saddam, what does this say? Whether Saddam is a .350 hitter and Bush only .270, or whether it's the other way around, Bush and Saddam are in the same league.

Why should Bin Laden bother

Why should Bin Laden bother to attack the US? W has done us more damage than al Qaida could ever hope to. Our economy and reputation are in tatters. Bin Laden can sit back, twiddle his thumbs and enjoy our disgrace.
