Bush Is a Nice Guy, but He Flubbed 9/11 Twice

Washington - As he leaves office, President Bush is passing on to his successor two wars and a growing economic debacle. What a way to go!

Because of Bush's policies, the U.S. also is complicit in the Israeli attack on the Palestinians on the Gaza Strip by providing a "made-in-America" high-tech arsenal for the assault and blocking a ceasefire for nearly two weeks, a move intended to help the Israelis consolidate their hold.

Not to worry, Bush says he isn't concerned about how history will view his militant eight years in the White House, telling ABC News that he "won't be around to read it."

Well, they say that journalism is the first draft of history. So I am going to predict that those future historians will not deal kindly with the Bush presidency.

It's true - as Bush and company point at their proudest achievement- there have been no new terrorist attacks on the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001.

But they fail to acknowledge administration mistakes before and after that fateful day, starting with the fact that White House and security officials ignored significant early warnings of an imminent strike against the U.S.

The second half of the double 9/11 mistake was the trampling of our constitutional system and American values by the administration's infamous torture policies, illegal interrogation practices, including water boarding (simulated drowning), secret prisons abroad and U.S. run jails at Guantanamo Bay and elsewhere. Post- 9/11 Bush strategy also nurtured a climate of fear that enabled the self-styled "decider" to lead the country into a senseless war against Iraq, a calamity still underway as he leaves office almost six years after the invasion.

Add the administration's pathetic response to Hurricane Katrina in 2005 and you have basis to dub Bush's eight White House years as the "Bush error."

He was to be the great "unifier" but instead he became a great polarizer.

While he remained stubbornly steadfast to his core social convictions, he did a 180-degree turn when it came to the role of government in the economy when he bailed out the collapsed giants of Wall Street.

He told CNN: "I've abandoned free market principles to save the free market systems." So much for all the anti-government rant of Republican conservatives.

After the 9/11 attacks, Vice President Dick Cheney and then-national security advisor Condoleezza Rice drummed up the fiction that Iraq was linked to the al Qaida attacks and sold that fable to a naive Congress and jittery American people. During the first crisis meeting after the 9/11 attack, neo-con advisor Paul Wolfowitz, said: "Let's bomb Iraq."

There were no Iraqis involved in the attack and no evidence that Saddam Hussein had any role in planning or executing it.

Other falsehoods that these officials peddled included the tale that Iraq's Saddam Hussein had an arsenal of weapons of mass destruction. Cheney told his Sunday television audiences, "We know where they are."

Official inspectors found none. The non-existent weapons were used to justify the U.S. invasion of Iraq in March 2003.

Bush is not about to admit that his costly inhumane attack on Iraq was a mistake. How could he tell grieving families of more than 4,000 American service members that their loved ones had died because of his error?

In addition to the flawed decision to attack Iraq, Bush and Co. used the aftermath of 9/11 to take wholesale swipes at our civil liberties, including warrantless wiretapping.

So those future historians will have a clear view of the 43rd president as they look back on the early years of the 21st century.

A list of Bush's accomplishments also should include his efforts to pay more money and political support into helping victims of AIDS and malaria in Africa. And he is proud of his controversial program "No Child Left Behind" to upgrade public school students by imposing national standards on an education system that had none.

Those future historians should also take note that Bush was hailed for his "likeability" when he came into office and was dubbed the guy you would like to share a beer with.

However, a CNN poll last year suggested that Bush had become the most unpopular president in modern American history. That CNN/Opinion Research Corp. survey indicated that 71 percent of the American public disapproved of how Bush was handling his job as president.

Bush must have a sense of relief in giving up the presidential burdens.

He is confident that those future historians will vindicate him and his presidency.

But no one is expecting him to wind up on Mount Rushmore.

Tell it like it is! Other

Tell it like it is! Other Bush nightmares. Failue to address global warming. We lost eight years in our effort to save the planet's eco-systems. The huge amounts of wealth that moved upstream to the very wealthy. The rich got richer and the rest of us lost our retirements. The deregulation of Wall Street is going to cost American taxpayers trillions of dollars. These are trillions of dollars out of seniors, children's and middle class pockets. It's as if we worked our whole life and now it's all gone and disappeared. Wall Street bankers made hundreds of millions of dollars as they poisoned the well with mortage-backed securities and CDSs that we continue to back up with our dollar. The night Bush stole the election I knew we would head into darkness, I fear the darkness will continue because our politians are addicted to money of the wealthy or afraid to take them on.

Helen, you forgot the press,

Helen, you forgot the press, which Bush succeeded in silencing completely. Complicit in all his Deciderisms, the "free" press, which loves to claim for itself the mantle of constitutional protector, showed itself to be the propaganda arm of whoever owns it and pays for its services. Disagree? Read any piece of American journalism from 2003 to 2005.

Bush is not a "nice guy" as

Bush is not a "nice guy" as the headline suggests. He is an egocentric--of limited intelligence and easily manipulated--who fits the mold of elite conservatives quite well. That is, he's pretty much a hedonist concerned with the comforts of his own lifetime--and doesn't give give a rat's rump about what the world will be facing after he's gone. So he makes light of history. However, somewhere within him we all know that he figures he'll somehow come out looking better than he actually was. That's been the story of his life. Screw up and just pretend it never happened. It'll dissipate in the public mind. Sorry, George; won't happen that way.

Helen, we love you! For

Helen, we love you! For brevity and poise, I'm sure your editor forced you to leave out the "war criminal charges", former Fed prosecutor Bugliosi's "murder charges" and other juicy sections. But the cracks in the wall are spreading towards a dam burst any day now.

" It's true - as Bush and

" It's true - as Bush and company point at their proudest achievement- there have been no new terrorist attacks on the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001." But how can someone take credit for the absence of something, especially given the fact that the first "terrorist attack" was carried out on 9/11 by his own administration?

George Bush really ought to

George Bush really ought to end up in a crimes against humanity trial at the world court in the Hague.

Thanks Helen for being so

Thanks Helen for being so polite to the "Destructor". There are many in and outside of this country who do not view this Administration's war crimes so politely, and we hope to see prosecutions ranging to the very top. i.e. dick and george.

it's almost over it's almost

it's almost over it's almost over it's almost over it's almost over.

Bush doesn't need Rushmore -

Bush doesn't need Rushmore - his head's already made of stone. -- Isn't it arguable that when he drubbed himself "the decider" that he became personally responsible for every crime committed by the US Gov? -- He really misspoke about his disinterest in what historians will write about him - HE CAN'T READ THEM.

It's almost over is one of

It's almost over is one of the funniest posts I have ever read. Right on! :)

Thank Goodness for

Thank Goodness for Helen. What a treat this morning on "Democracy Now"to hear one goddess,Amy Goodman saying "Thank you"to Helen Thomas, the goddess. This as all the other goddesses in the audience replied"Thank you Amy" with Helen.

As usual in the Bush

As usual in the Bush administration it is what is not said but done that would most interest historians--as they would already have the writings of journalists like Helen Thomas as prologue. Perhaps not in writing the history of the USA, but when historians do tackle the devious history of Israel, George W. Bush and his neocon administration will go down as the best president Israel ever had.

Helen, thank you for being

Helen, thank you for being one of the few real journalists we have. Your tenacity and grit are a powerful example to all the tire swinging, dancing with karl rove, bar b que eaters who take up space in your profession.

The only thing he will end

The only thing he will end up on is a package of toilet bowl cleanser. Even that will make people think twice about buying it.

A neat way to sum up the

A neat way to sum up the Bush administrated would be the three words: MALICE IN BLUNDERLAND

Helen, I believe you were

Helen, I believe you were the first in the mainstream media to call his presidency the worst in U.S. history. I love your sneer as Bush walked off the stage yesterday as published in todays New York Times!

Unfortunately his successes

Unfortunately his successes in transferring trillions in US government dollars from the working people to the wealthy will have effects that will continue to cause intense suffering for those at the middle and bottom rungs of the economic ladder. The Bush, Walker, and Cheney families and friends have also enriched themselves enormously over the past 8 years and their golden parachutes will insure a safe landing during the coming depression.

Ask any public school

Ask any public school educator about the impact of NCLB, they will tell you that it is a disaster. So our kids won't know anything except how to take a test. Both of the major testing companies are heavy gop contributors. Coincidence? Not bloody likely. And I for one am not willing to have a beer with a war criminal. It's really grasping at straws here to avoid the complicity in these crimes that we all share.

Not to worry, Bush says he

Not to worry, Bush says he isn't concerned about how history will view his militant eight years in the White House, telling ABC News that he "won't be around to read it." but his girls and my daughter will be

Helen, Thank you for your

Helen, Thank you for your efforts all these years. You have been one of the few voices that have been telling the American people the truth. Bush is a little rich boy that failed at everything he attempted. The war was his efforts to one-up his father - he took Baghdad. No matter it was the worse decision this country has made in decades. Thank god, this misery is almost over. How long will it take to dig this country out of the hole he has put us in?

Back in 2005, I thought I'd

Back in 2005, I thought I'd never live through the remainder of Bush's term in office. I think the stress and anger took 10 years off my life expectancy. On the brighter side, I've discovered lots of folks in the local community who work hard for peace and justice issues. Next week we will have an Inauguration Dinner Party called "A Menu for Change." On the old menu are dishes such as "Lame Duck Gumbo"... mix a gross of ineptitude with Hurricane force winds, add a dash of hopes. Serve with brownies....you get the idea. New menu dishes....any ideas??

I keep hearing things like

I keep hearing things like "trillion dollars that will be coming out of middle class pockets" Wake up!!! What Bush/Cheney did was eliminate the "middle-class"!!!! There is no such thing. There is rich (formerly upper class) and poor (formerly the darling middle class and the forever abused lower class). That is what the last 8 years have been about. Thats it! That is what all of this was designed to accomplish. Thank you voters who put your name on this legacy and for what? $300? You make me sick to my stomach and more importantly you make me sick to my soul. We should prosecute every member of this administration, including the people who voted for them. Then maybe we can actually get some use out of our privatized prison system.

Helen, You are the one

Helen, You are the one journalist worthy of the name. Trust you to always tell us the truth. I know that you have devoted your whole career with complete integrity. You have never let us down. Sadly, the same cannot be said for most of your fellow reporters, for which their seared consciences will have to answer. They know that they have let their country down out of fear of losing their 'prestigious standing' in the Press Room. So sad, for without a Free Press that will always tell us the truth, we do not have a Free Country. All we have now is a counterfeit democracy, totally controlled by Outside influences. My prayer is that you, Helen Thomas, will be around for a long time in the future, and still speaking Truth to Power. You have never let us down. Millions of us have been right there with you, cheering you on and thankful that you had the guts to voice what we would have ..given the opportunity. God bless you.

I have long been a fan of

I have long been a fan of your style and integrity. Thank you Helen for never failing to tell it like it is.

Bush/Cheney, the first

Bush/Cheney, the first openly Fascist dictatorship in US history, must be made to pay for their crimes against We The American Taxpaying Working (as opposed to Investing) Public!

Bush is not about to admit

Bush is not about to admit that his costly inhumane attack on Iraq was a mistake. How could he tell grieving families of more than 4,000 American service members that their loved ones had died because of his error? Helen hit the nail on the head with this one simple statement. Bush has himself convinced he won't ever have to feel regret, by the time the books are written he will be dead and thats all he cares about, not his daughters or anyone elses. JUST HIM he is most concerned about sparing his own feelings

Bush has been a man of the

Bush has been a man of the people, rich people as he himself has publicly joked. They are benefiting with lower taxes and they are being bailed out by the Bush administration if they invested unwisely. In fact Bush is asking for a going away gift of another 350 million dollars for his banking buddies. No doubt they will take great care of Bush financially as they have with his father. Bush has served the rich of this country very very well and they will tell him for as long as he lives that he did a great job but people just did not understand and appreciate him. He really did no more than Reagan before him, he just is not a likable actor like Reagan and that is really his principal failing and one he has been compensating for his entire life whether with cocaine and alcohol for the first 40 years of his life or later when he became intoxicated by power. Nixon believed he was above the law, as did Reagan with Iran-Contra, but Bush has simply taken it to another level and thanks to Cheney and a corrupt corporate media and spineless Congress, he has gotten away with it for 8 years.

There's another promise Bush

There's another promise Bush made that isn't getting the attention it deserves. During the 2000 campaign his mantra was: "I'm a uniter not a divider." Well, he certainly succeeded in uniting us: 8 out of 10 agree that we'll be happy to see him go.

Way to go Helen! What a

Way to go Helen! What a class act she is, with a keen eye for the truth! I'll just bet she expected bush to ignore her during his final press conference on Tuesday after reading this. Certainly no love loss.

The future historians will

The future historians will hopefully put all (and more) of what is said in this piece within the context of the convictions on criminal charges of most of the Bush cronies in and out of the administration.

Not quite, Helen. Torture

Not quite, Helen. Torture is not simulated drowning, it is repeated drowning. Further, the Nuremberg Tribunals an international court headed by the U. S. after WWII judged β€œinvasion” to be β€œthe supreme international war crime.” This was presented to be an international standard of law and conscience for all time. It was rightly championed by us until the invasion of Iraq. The invasion was thoroughly promoted through lies. The actions that have engendered and supported the war are criminal and impeachable. Many other war crimes have now been perpetrated by the Bush government, including torture. Torture overwhelms human standards expressing, in effect, every violation that can be perpetrated against a human. It is the ultimate corruption of power. Its victims do not recover but carry the scars of such treatment invisibly for the rest of their lives - if they can bear surviving it at all. Implied in such government behavior is the breakdown of law, Due Process, and accountability from those in power. People who are imprisoned indefinitely without charges or legal recourse and tortured are not prisoners. They are slaves. This is what the Bush Administration and its collaborators have done and what they represent.

Bush is not a nice guy. He

Bush is not a nice guy. He is totally bogus. He should be forced to spend the rest of his life explaining how he pulled all his rackets and scams.

There are some additional

There are some additional considerations that will contribute to the Bush legacy. His impact on the environmental community as well as the scientific community has been completely negative. Agencies that were constituted for the protection of the public were headed by political cronies rather than objective scientists. On numerous occasions a scientific consensus by an agency was negated by a political spokesman for an agency. Rather than set an example for the world's concern with Global Warming this administration did everything for the special interests. The rest of the world has lost faith in American leadership.

Helen, I respect you

Helen, I respect you tremendously but you were too kind. This administration is filled with criminals and there is no doubt that they have diminished our democracy in ways that only sacrifice and determination can rectify. We have consequently, given our future president a super human job. Eight years may not be enough to put us back on course and in the meantime, we have lost our way. Every department of our government will need to be overhauled and the middle class may never fully recover. I am 75 years old and my retirement will be one of reliance on the kindness of government (huh!)or a burden on my kids, because my home lost value that will not recover in time for me and my savings is lost. Put that in your hat, GW, and let's see how you spin that!

Exact. This is a

Exact. This is a continuation of 'doing the wrong thing for the right[?] reason' has been the mantra of the Bush for 8+years. This is a sign of immaturity which is usually left behind as adult intelligence takes over. This is the kind of speculative/gambling babble that is spoken by those who listen to themselves to reassure themselves they did nothing wrong:'Bads intelligence' is claimed as mitigating--but it is not. There was no 'bad intelligence', it cannot be created, it did not exist. There is no such thing as 'bad intelligence'. The intelligence was good. Fabricated false claims were substituted, but in no way does that make these false substitutions 'bad intelligence'--it makes it no intelligence, because it is NOT intelligence in any way, by a ny definition. By definition, false claims are not in the realm of 'inteliigence' in any way. And id somehow Bush was 'misled' then now is the time for him to develop empathy and understanding for those on death row by error.

The unifier unified the

The unifier unified the world against the US. We need a national day of shoe throwing at these criminals!

You're great, Helen, but I

You're great, Helen, but I can't buy the "nice guy" comment. Sorry. I've heard this throughout his presidency, and it's B.S. Aside from approving torture, this is a man who giggled when talking about a woman on death row begging for her life. Whatever opinion one may have on the death penalty, by every conceivable measure, giggling about putting someone to death is certainly NOT indicative of "niceness."

Bush's "sense of relief in

Bush's "sense of relief in giving up the presidential burdens" cannot compare with ours.

We all agree, on January 20,

We all agree, on January 20, 2009 the whole world will give a sigh of relief. "W" included.

GWB accomplished what he set

GWB accomplished what he set out to do. Bring violence and chaos to the world. It was the ONLY thing he knew how to do. Now the world must serve those who stole our heritage and prosperity. It is a long way to the bottom and GWB has helped shorten the distance. He is the true American Criminal.

"...there have been no new

"...there have been no new terrorist attacks on the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001". True, but we have no evidence fraudulent dropped charges and "trust me" that they stopped any. "How could he tell grieving families of more than 4,000 American service members that their loved ones had died because of his error?" How could he tell them they died for oil and petty personal revenge hidden by lies? "...pay more money and political support into helping victims of AIDS and malaria in Africa". As long as the only prevention is abstinence. "...he is proud of his controversial program "No Child Left Behind" to upgrade public school students by imposing national standards on an education system that had none." Without providing funding or any other support for his program of regimentation, standardized tests, and punishment. Helen, I usually love to read you, but this is just too kind to a man who deserves no kindness whatsoever.

" It's true - as Bush and

" It's true - as Bush and company point at their proudest achievement- there have been no new terrorist attacks on the U.S. since Sept. 11, 2001." Uh... think : anthrax

I just cannot believe the

I just cannot believe the people in this country when it comes to giving w & dick a free pass for their criminal actions and complicity. What does is take to make any of you reading this post to come to understand we are in the midst of the biggest terrorist attack on this country right now? I wonder how many people have died and will die because of w & dick's policies and those most traitorous complicitors congress.? You still don't know what I am rambling on about? I am talking about what even w & dick called the biggest threat to the security of our country and that is the threat to our economy! Just look at every single elected and appointed person scrambling to get more and more of a bigger share of the taxpayers money for themselves and their crappy corporate shrill and sending us into pure squalor for the sake of rewarding those financial terrorists for their incompetent and criminal decimation of that most precious of scared parts of our country, the economy. And we continue to allow this to continue. Helen, I am really mad that you were treated by this most spoiled of brats in his attempt to 'disappear' you but you are not correct, and no one else is either, in saying these clowns have NOT allowed another terrorist attack on america, not when we are living it in the here and now and will undoubtedly be living it through our children and grandchildren for years to come.

Helen!!!Bush, was Not a Nice

Helen!!!Bush, was Not a Nice Guy. This world deserves that (The United States of America) make its best effort to give back what has been destroyed over the last eight years. Credibility and Statesmanship. I'll look forward to this administrations efforts. If the U.S. can lead, they're will be a renewal of trust. It's always fun to watch. WOW. Politics the great spectator sport. Revolution won't work, not anymore, but we can voice your outrage. They can't lock everyone up. Can They?

Helen: What you say is

Helen: What you say is right, but you don't go far enough on the "flubbing" of 9/11. It is time for someone to say that Bush's response did more damage to the US than the actual attack -- an effect that was actually predicted, and counted on, by bin Laden. Bush played right into his hands. First, Bush "fought fire" by pouring gasoline on it, inflaming anti-US sentiment among Islamists. Second, he weakened the US economy by squandering untold billions on good-for-show but useless "security" measures -- money that could have been used on things that improved both our daily lives and our ability to withstand attack, such as hospitals and first responders. Then of course we have the two disastrous wars, the gutting of human rights and the constitution, and the squandering of our world prestige. Bin Laden could wound us, but not cripple us. Only Bush could do that, and that only with our tolerance! As Pogo used to say, We have met the enemy and he is us.

bush cheney the real BEAVIS

bush cheney the real BEAVIS & BUTTHEAD TRULY PATHETIC

Oh what's WRONG with you

Oh what's WRONG with you people? The closest comment to the truth was the guy who spoke of this being "the first fascist dictatorship in history," well, actually the second--remember? 911 was an inside job--at least I and over 50% of New Yorkers think so. And how about the "Patriot Act?" And how about NAMU? Why do you ignore the most heinous crimes of these corporate globalists. The whole purpose of this all is to develop a New Age of Feudalism, so that these tyrants can reign as their counterparts did in olden days. Is it really that hard to see?

Give me a break, Helen

Give me a break, Helen Thomas, and others! If Bush is a "nice guy", so was Ted Bundy! And Bush is a sociopath like Ted Bundy. By all accounts, Bundy was well liked. He was a law student for God's sake! He fooled many people into believing he was supposedly a "nice guy", as well as a good, moral, upstanding person. And he was probably a better student than Bush. Well, if anyone thinks sociopath Bush is a "nice guy", they are as deluded as those who liked, trusted and believed Ted Bundy to be a "nice guy". The only significant difference between the two is that sociopath Bush had others such as the huge U.S. military machine carry out his mass murderous psychopathology for him, while sociopath Bundy carried it out personally. But they both terrorized many people, and Bush did so to millions of innocent people rather than "simply" a relatively small number of women by comparison with how many innocent babies, children, woman and men Bush mass murdered. So, PLEASE, get real! Bush is NOT a "nice guy", any more than ANY other sociopathic psychopath mass murderer is a nice person! Quit trying to sugar coat the mass murder of the Bush administration! There is ABSOLUTELY NO "sugar coating" for it, anymore than there is for Bundy's mass murder on a MUCH smaller scale!
