"This Land Is Your Land" Like Woody Wrote It

Bee Branch - At the conclusion of today's concert for president-elect Barack Obama 89-year-old Pete Seeger joined Bruce Springsteen for a sing-along with perhaps half a million people of Woody Guthrie's "This Land Is Your Land," which I dare say practically everyone in the country knows from childhood.

But sly old Pete, who actually hoboed with Woody during the Depression and Dust Bowl, had the crowd sing the song as it was actually written, as not only a celebration of this great land, but as a demand for workers' and people's rights. That is, he restored the verses that have been censored from the song over the years to make it less political:

There was a big high wall there that tried to stop me;
Sign was painted, it said private property;
But on the back side it didn't say nothing;
That side was made for you and me.

In the shadow of the steeple I saw my people,
By the relief office I seen my people;
As they stood there hungry, I stood there asking
Is this land made for you and me?

Nobody living can ever stop me,
As I go walking that freedom highway;
Nobody living can ever make me turn back
This land was made for you and me.

The "relief office," of course, refers to the ad hoc soup bowls and such set up during the Depression before the New Deal began to get the social security net we have all depended upon since the 1930s in place.

Seeger, like Guthrie, has been a controversial figure at times during his life, questioned by the witch hunting committees of Congress in the 1950s, black listed, and even banded from television as late as the late 1960s.

But while he hasn't got much of a voice left anymore and did not attempt to play his banjo today, it was wonderful to see the gleam in his subversive eye as he did his call and response with the throngs in front of the Lincoln Memorial.

Somewhere Woody - and Leadbelly, and Sonny and Cisco and the rest of the great balladeers of that bygone era - are smiling tonight.

    Full Lyrics

    This Land Is Your Land
Words and Music by Woody Guthrie

    Chorus:
This land is your land, this land is my land
From California, to the New York Island
From the redwood forest, to the gulf stream waters
This land was made for you and me

As I was walking a ribbon of highway
I saw above me an endless skyway
I saw below me a golden valley
This land was made for you and me

    Chorus

I've roamed and rambled and I've followed my footsteps
To the sparkling sands of her diamond deserts
And all around me a voice was sounding
This land was made for you and me

    Chorus

The sun comes shining as I was strolling
The wheat fields waving and the dust clouds rolling
The fog was lifting a voice come chanting
This land was made for you and me

    Chorus

As I was walkin' - I saw a sign there
And that sign said - no tress passin'
But on the other side .... it didn't say nothin!
Now that side was made for you and me!

    Chorus

In the squares of the city - In the shadow of the steeple
Near the relief office - I see my people
And some are grumblin' and some are wonderin'
If this land's still made for you and me.

    Chorus (2x)

Maybe this land is for us,

Maybe this land is for us, I'm pretty excited. Finally.

Huzzah and Kudos to Pete!

Huzzah and Kudos to Pete! As he called out the lyrics, I turned to my husband and said, "We've not heard these words in a long, long time!" Too long: Long live Woody! Long Live Pete! Long live My Land!

If doesn't get any better

If doesn't get any better than Pete, Woody, this land is your land and Obama...

We better take it back. We

We better take it back. We may have a Prez. now not fool enough to not listen to us the people.

It takes me back to KPFA in

It takes me back to KPFA in Berkeley, half a century ago: http://www.kpfahistory.info

My 5 year old loves this

My 5 year old loves this song. We sing it with all the words. It's fantastic to be heading into a government that we can actually believe in. I'm a "daughter of" the American Revolution and I feel very happy to say YES this land WAS made for you and me.

If that doesn't bring tears

If that doesn't bring tears to your eyes, there is something drastically wrong with you. Let's do it!!

Pete Seeger is a national

Pete Seeger is a national treasure.

The NEW National

The NEW National Anthem! Sung by Stand-Up AMERICANS. Thank You Pete & Bruce or leading our collective Voice.

And apparently Obama and his

And apparently Obama and his team allowed this "subversion" to happen. At the same time he allows conservatives to be heard. I hope that rather than think he lacks integrity, people will realize that he is being inclusive and letting everyone's truth out. That takes a great deal of courage.

This message should resonate

This message should resonate deeply in an America where the wealthy have driven locals out by raising property values to a point where the locals cannot afford to live. Take the Adirondacks, for example. Woody would spin in his grave to see how our wealth has destroyed the notion of this land is your land, this land is my land. I pray that we can return to that ideal, not the perversion of the wealthy being able to buy off our natural heritage. Our strength is so beautifully summed up by this song.

At long last, this land is

At long last, this land is our land again, or it feels like it now that it is the last day of an administration who stole the very essence of it. HOORAY! HALLELUJAH! FREE AT LAST, FREE AT LAST, GOOD GOD ALMIGHTY WE ARE FREE AT LAST OF THE RUBBUSH!! Am I excited that McCain will not be inaugurated tomorrow? YOU BETCHA!! PRESIDENT BARAK HUSSEIN OBAMA!! YES, YES, YES!!

....and the Native

....and the Native Americans???

Wow. That makes me so

Wow. That makes me so happy. Even though we didn't know the forbidden lyrics some of us grassroots Democrats sang this to each other during some of the darkest days of Bush. Keep singing!

What about the indigenous

What about the indigenous peoples who, despite the greatest genocide in history, are left alive generally despised on their reservations and scattered around in the inner cities? How do you suppose THEY feel about all these new worlders singing their joyous possession of "this land... made for you and me"? Who's 'you and me'? I guess their best choice is to throw in their lot with the rest of us, all these immigrants laying claim to their land, and enjoy the song. Perhaps Obama's interest in diversity will lead the government to honestly honor the rights of the original occupants of this "land made for you and me."

Ironic, ain't it? Pete

Ironic, ain't it? Pete Seeger and Bruce Springsteen get to sing the original words to "This Land," the microphones work fine and it goes out to the owrld via HBO, but Bishop Eugene Robinson, giving the invocation, is censored. His prayer and his image are blacked out by HBO. His words are silenced by the Obama inauguration committee. Kinda seems like blacklisting to me. Plus ca change, plus c'est la meme chose.

Thank you so much for the

Thank you so much for the lyrics...I stood in front of the TV crying my eyes out with joy as I stumbled through the sing-a-long...I can't describe how happy it made me to see Pete Seeger up there! I simply love these times! What a difference a President makes.

When I was 16 in 1962 my

When I was 16 in 1962 my best friend's parents, he a worker on the Seattle docks and she a housewife and member of the Seattle Repertory Threater gave a party which included blacks, whites, hispanics and all sorts of political thinkers. One of the albums played at that party was by Pete Seegar singing This Land. The album cover showed a dark haired, much younger Pete than the one on TV today. The next time I saw her parents was the year I turned 50. They were still living and still together but had no memory of me or that party so many years ago. They were originals, those two.

There is a move afoot to

There is a move afoot to nominate Pete for a Nobel Peace Prize. Google it for more.

this land is made for you,

this land is made for you, but y'all said it tain't for me and bishop gene. thanks y'all. i love my country. i serve my country. i am a 100% disabled us vet. y'all use us and throw us away, y'all can sing cause of my sacrifice. when you give us our rights back, just our right to life, like everybody else, then i'll believe. we bleed too. we're not just kleenex. until then it's spin. hype. MLK was for everybody. NOT everybody but.

The Obama people deserve

The Obama people deserve tremendous kudos for letting Pete Seeger on the stage. He has been red-baited, McCartyed and smeared about as much as is possible. I'm waiting for the loons to start bringing Seeger's "treason."

He's clearly playing the

He's clearly playing the banjo in that clip...

In response to an anonymous

In response to an anonymous writer and to Bolobos, it was Pete Seeger I first heard sing other words to this song, to wit: "This land is your land, but it once was my land, until we sold you Manhattan Island. You put our nations on reservations, This land was stole by you from me." Nonetheless, the celebration of the inauguration of Barack Obama is undiminished by these concerns. His taking office represents in a very real sense the possibility of the restoration of our nation to dignity, respect and the rule of law and an end to corruption and incompetence in the office of the chief executive. Native people in this land can find a friend in Obama unlike his predecessor. Pete Seeger IS a national treasure, and it was an unmitigated joy to see him in his ninetieth year witness another step in the progress of this nation he has peacefully struggled for for so many years. Thank you Pete!

Don't spare the hope. Peace

Don't spare the hope. Peace in a brighter nation & world. Thank you, Barack & Michelle

I first heard Pete Seeger

I first heard Pete Seeger live 50 years & a month ago, at UBC in Vancouver. He was held up at the border for 3 hours, but we waited. Second time was at [Vietnam War] Moratorium Day in Washington, Nov. 69 - singing with Arlo Guthrie, 'All we are saying is give Peace a chance' in an astounding 12 minute mantra in which we all joined. He's loved outside the US too...

to the previous commenter

to the previous commenter .... great song, but yes, the irony is thick that native americans are never mentioned. this land was made for me not you. :P

If Pete Seeger has not yet

If Pete Seeger has not yet received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, when bottom-feeders and toadies like George Tenant and other Bush cronies have ... it should be one of Obama's first orders of business to rectify that gross oversight to someone who is a true national treasure and life-long custodian of what it really means to be a free and feisty American!

I'm pretty sure the lyrics

I'm pretty sure the lyrics actually say "New York highlands" not islands in reference to the the highlands of the Hudson valley in upstate New York. At least, that's what Pete Seeger once told me.

I could not keep from

I could not keep from strumming my guitar along with that music. 3 chords I can handle. If we really want this land, we had better wake up and smell the coffee. We need to get into physical and mental and spiritual shape. Hand me the remote would you, and the bag of chips please.

I was walking in the

I was walking in the Redwoods in California, and with NPR radio clapped to my ears, I was listening, crying, singing with Pete Seeger et al. What a thrill!

Well, maybe this land still

Well, maybe this land still belongs to you and me, but we are in the eleventh hour of the end of the Republic and the beginning of the totalitarian empire lurks just over the horizon. If/when that happens, this land will belong to THEM, not us, and that will be the end of America. Now the future or demise of America is in Obama's hands and we can only hope that he will be able to institute the radical changes (and yes, radical, not stop-gap or lip service) necessary to ensure that the democratic principles of America continue to survive (or more properly, are re-instituted) and that the globalist oligarchy is brought to heel. It remains to be seen if the promises he made to the special interests that supported his election will allow him to take the necessary steps, or even if he himself is inclined to.

I first heard Pete Seeger

I first heard Pete Seeger live in concert at a school in CA when I was about 3, in 1959 or so, singing after Joan Baez - can't recall much beyond the little electric fan I had which fascinated me on that hot day. But as the years went by his music taught me so much without my knowing, a resonance of the heart with certain principles of humanity. I saw the press reports in the BBC of this concert, but thanks to a friend in France, who told me of this website I'm able to see and hear what for me is an event second only to Obama's inauguration in these days. And I agree fully with Michelle Obama's comments made last year... Finally, to feel a deep sense of pride in being an American! Thank you Pete for your life and life's work! You have moved me deeply over the decades.

If there ever was a chance

If there ever was a chance that the true "owners" (they didn't think of themselves that way) of this land got included for real in this country it is now! I hope we keep our word for once.

Thank you, Pete Seeger. You

Thank you, Pete Seeger. You endured Joseph McCarthy and such loss and tribulation, but persevered. Thank you.

Finally! There is hope that

Finally! There is hope that this country can heal form the PTSD caused by the "shock and awe" of the past eight years - fading into a sigh....of relief.

...and this shoe is Bush's

...and this shoe is Bush's shoe. This past weekend a man was arrested for tossing a shoe over the White House fence. And that gave me an idea...what if an email went out over the Internet soliciting donations of old shoes for the Bush Library, and people from all over the world mailed in their old shoes to Bush's Presidential Library. Send out that email, people.

This concert was free, not

This concert was free, not $100! What do you think of that! Free entertainment from the likes of The Boss, that Irish band, one of Soul music's greatest, and one of the last of the Folkies.

Pete Seeger is a National

Pete Seeger is a National Treasure!". Arlo is in Dublin right now thrilled to hear Pete and Bruce singing Woody's song", "This Land is Your Land." Arlo and the entire Guthrie family voted for Barack Obama and we stand so proud with people all over the world! Yes, we can!

I cried hearing the song.

I cried hearing the song. It's been a long time since I even thought about the words. Pete sings about optimism and each of us needs to see and feel it again.

Why are we separating out

Why are we separating out Native Americans even in this conversation? Who's to say we're not all singing this song together already: Native and once foreign? Those who love it belong to this land as much as it belongs to them. Let us all work together to honor the land and all of its inhabitants. Honoring this song, its makers, and our new administration is a great start.

What's sad to me is that so

What's sad to me is that so many of the folks the song might apply to now have been prevented from seeing it. HBO should never have been given the distribution rights to the concert. They effectively managed to block it from anyone that either doesn't subscribe to HBO on TV or that doesn't have the ability to connect to the internet for extended viewing of streaming content. For the record, I subscribe to Charter digital services and was told by them that it would be free to me via their On Demand, but I couldn't find it anywhere in their listings. Anyone that only has basic or extended basic is totally out of luck. I have to hope that Barack doesn't know that it wasn't possible for nearly anyone to just turn on the TV and be able to watch the opening ceremony. If he did I'm sure he'd be up in arms. And I hope he does find out after the dust settles today and will find a way to make it up to folks.

The new anthem and the

The new anthem and the inauguration forgot to bring in the sacred feminine. As Alice Walker stated on Democracy Now, there's hope he will listen.

Pete Seeger is indeed a

Pete Seeger is indeed a treasure--a national treasure, an international treasure, a world treasure--deserving of the most prestigious honors and medals. He, his music, and his courageous message have endured over long decades despite many odds. He gives one hope in the worst of times. It is right and fitting that he sang for the inauguration, the beginning of a better era let us hope, just as Pete Seeger has always hoped for and raised his voice in song for.

Like those who never thought

Like those who never thought to see an African-American president, I didn't think I'd live to see an ex-blacklisted "fellow traveller" sing at his inauguration! We still need a few more victories before I can die happy, but this was sure good for my heart! The next high point for me was Rev Lowry reciting the words of the Black National Anthem to begin his prayer!

Someone above suggested that

Someone above suggested that the words really referred to "the New York Highlands". All I know is what Woodie sang, and it was, with no mistake, "The New York Island".

As an Australian, commenting

As an Australian, commenting from Sydney... ALL of our major TV networks gave exhaustive coverage of the Obama inauguration. Australia is the ONLY country to join the USA in every major conflict the US has been in since 'The Great War' - ie WW1, joint-ops in Pacific Theater in WW2, Korea, Vietnam, Kuwait/Iran (GW1), Iraq/Afghanistan (GW2), plus some solo-peacekeeping in our own region (eg East Timor, Soloman Islands, PNG etc). Having said that, even Australians are SO pleased to see Bush gone and a more law-abiding C-in-C at the helm of our great ally. Aussies are still fighting in Iragistan (Iraq/Afghanistan) in support of the US cause, but Bush really stained the relationship. I feel certain that Obama will bring a fresh attitude and approach... including the foresight that the Israeli-Palestinian issue is CENTRAL to peace in the Middle East. The man-in-the-street, even in Damascus knew that the Israeli attacks on Gaza were timed to start after the US election but before Bush left office. So was the air strike on Iran's nuclear facility, but even Bush would not condone that one!

It was great to see and hear

It was great to see and hear Pete sing the extra verses. However I question the historical accuracy of this article. First of all Pete was born in 1919. He would have been 10 at the start of the depression. A little young to be riding the rails with Woody, especially since his family was pretty well off. According to wikipedia, Pete met Woody in 1940, a year after the depression ended. Also, the "relief office" is a reference to offices set up by the Federal Emergency Relief Administration, established in 1933 to assist unemployed workers.

A petition was started on

A petition was started on the Internet last year to nominate Pete Seeger for the Nobel Peace Prize for his lifelong work for peace, social justice, civil rights, human decency, and environmental responsibility. It has now developed into a grassroots movement with almost 20,000 signatures. Word has spread exclusively by word of mouth and email; no money was spent on advertising. The web site where you can view the petition is www.nobelprize4pete.org.

Speaking as an aging

Speaking as an aging atheist, I can only say "Bless Pete Seeger". And bless not just America but everyone else, too! Best of luck to President Obama...he'll need it. PS to the new president: Treaty obligations matter, especially on issues like torture.

This was so beautiful. Can

This was so beautiful. Can you imagine what went through Pete Seeger's mind as he performed this great American song/story there on this day for ALL AMERICA? It was just so great to see and hear him with his son and Bruce S. there with him. Just a superb intro for Pete by Bruce. I was pleased to note the article's writer mention of Cisco Huston. Altogether a moving tribute to FREE AMERICA ...and to see the new president sing along? Not embarrassed to admit I cried at the end.

Enjoy!

Enjoy!

This is what hope sounds

This is what hope sounds like!!!

Another note: I think this

Another note: I think this was the event that was introduced with an invocation from Bishop V. Eugene Robinson, the first openly gay Episcopal bishop. HBO did not broadcast Bishop Robinson's appearance, a slight to us all. By the way, Pete's 90th birthday comes up in May -- and have you ever seen a more sprightly nonagenarian? He sprinted on and off the stage, making this sexagenarian envious. His vocal chords may have been on strike for the last fifteen years, but his spirit's on the job!

As an avid fan of Phil Ochs,

As an avid fan of Phil Ochs, Bob Dylan and other folk song heroes I put Pete up there with Woody as an icon of an icon of important American music (as well as Tiny Tim). In 1970 he came to my college, spoke and wrote "The Torn Flag" while there. I hadn't the nerve to speak to him then but his image has been with me since. That we have now a black president and one that Pete can endorse with the actual Woody Guthrie anthem makes me tearfully proud and glad. Worth getting our heads busted over the past eight years.

Just some notes on Pete and

Just some notes on Pete and "This Land..." -He did meet Woody in 1940, after having done his own hitchhiking and rail-riding around the country after he dropped out of Harvard. In that year he formed the Almanac Singers with Woody, Lee Hayes, Milard Lampel and several others and performed for people in struggle, union groups and left wing organizations until he joined the army and Woody joined the Merchant Marine during WWII. -He did play his banjo on Sunday. You can hear it loud and clear. - Woody's original words were "...New York island" - Peter Seeger has been a beacon of light for people struggling for justice, peace, the environment and political and economic democracy for close to 70 years I was filming the concert from the press section on Sunday. When Pete began to line out the "banned' three verses -- there at the Lincoln Memorial where I had sat on the steps and heard Dr. King deliver his speech in 1963; there in front of the Black President Elect of the United States, who smiled and nodded his head and sang along -- the magnitude of the change in our country came to me in a very personal way. Tears clouded my eyepiece and the image shook with my sobs.

Anybody notice Will.i.am

Anybody notice Will.i.am went the other direction and censored himself when quoting the lyrics from "Where is the Love?" during his lame Bob Marley cover at the inaugural concert on Saturday? Pete brings back the true spirit of his song while Will leaves off the CIA and the KKK from his list of home-grown terrorists as it appeared in the original. Sad.

We are letting freedom ring.

We are letting freedom ring. I am proud once again to be an American.

I met Pete Seeger in 1946.

I met Pete Seeger in 1946. I was 15. He came with a friend to play for a 'square dance' at Horace Mann Lincoln School in NYC. LIFE magazine was there to document the 'revival'' of folk music. They took pictures of us dancing. He had a red nose and they both wore plaid flannel shirts tucked into blue jeans with suspenders. They were shy. Some people thought he was a Veteran of WWII that had just ended, others said he had been a Conscientious Objector, I wonder if anyone now knows?

I've also heard Pete say

I've also heard Pete say that Woody originally wrote "... from California to Coney Island." Woody, of course, lived on Coney Island for many years. It also brought tears to my eyes. I could tell by looking at Pete's face how proud and happy he was to be there. BTW - in regard to an earlier comment. Tao Rodriguez Seeger is Pete's grandson, not his son.

We first heard Pete in my

We first heard Pete in my schools and at block parties growing up in the west village NYC circa 1968. I thought he was the coolest folksinger of all. He ALLWAYs cued the lyrics so's we could sing along on every verse. Later as a young teen guitar player I did sit and picks with him up in the Peekskill area. He struck me as the real deal and so very kind. I am so proud to be one of his former "students" and I will pay it forward. Thanks Pete!

Listen to what lyrics Pete

Listen to what lyrics Pete is ACTUALLY leading Much closer to the original intent of Woody's song: In the squares of the city, In the shadow of the steeple, By the relief office, I saw my people, As they stood there hungry, I said now "What's This?" Is this land made for you and me? Nobody living, can ever stop me, as I go walking, my freedom highway, nobody living can make me turn back, this land was made for you and me.

I'm a foreigner, but I recon

I'm a foreigner, but I recon America would be a better country if this was your national anthem. Think of it. Instead of crowing about the mighty battle standard that flew as, with god on your side, you vanquished your enemies; you could instead sing of the natural beauty of your land and how lucky you are to share it, in freedom, with your countrymen.

those curious about the

those curious about the original lyrics can check out www.woodyguthrie.org - at the top of the webpage the original lyrics (for that verse) have been scanned and are there for all to see. As a singer/songwriter many times you will 'change' lyrics for concerts, sometimes inadvertently, sometimes not. But seeing it written in Woody's own hand should settle the matter.

It was an emotional

It was an emotional experience! The comments part was especially significant because of what was said regarding Native Americans. I surely hope Pres.Obama will do everything he can to assure their prosperity and reverse so many years of neglect and denigration. I'll go to the www.nobelprize4pete.org site and vote for Pete.
