America Needs a Job

Recalling the Great Depression, Americans are deeply worried about loss of jobs. Today President Obama's jobs creation plans are meeting with stiff resistance from congressional Republicans. (Photo: Dorothea Lange)

The hardest work in the world is being out of work.

    - Whitney Young Jr.

The news to begin the week could not have been any more jarring.

Due to a stark downturn in demand for glass used in flat-screen televisions and computers, Corning Inc. announced it would be cutting 3,500 jobs, or 13 percent of its payroll. Sprint Nextel Corp. announced it would be cutting 8,000 jobs. General Motors announced it would be cutting 2,000 workers, with the announcement coming on the heels of prior GM announcements that they had slashed output across the board by 20 percent, and that they will idle 14 of their 24 North American assembly plants for undetermined periods in the upcoming third and fourth quarters.

Pfizer Inc. announced it will be cutting 8,000 jobs, or about 10 percent of its workforce; upon the completion of Pfizer's purchase of ailing Wyeth, Pfizer is expected to have cut 20,000 jobs in total. Home Depot announced it was cutting 7,000 jobs and abandoning its Expo business. Caterpillar, the heavy equipment company, announced it would cut 20,000 jobs from its payroll.

The Dallas Morning News reported on Monday that, "The US economy has dropped 2.59 million jobs since the recession began in December 2007, and unemployment rose to 7.2 percent last month. Some analysts worry that the economy could now be losing as many as 600,000 jobs a month, and they said Monday's layoff announcements served to underline the stricken state of the labor market."

"The latest job cuts - and the additional announcements likely to come in a cascading pattern as job losses through the economy cause demand to shrink further and thus lead to more layoffs -mean more pain for states, as unemployment insurance claims rise and deplete state coffers," continued the report.

The current political fight over President Obama's proposed economic stimulus plan, if conducted by responsible officials whose concerns lie only with the plight of the American worker, would be focused almost exclusively on the incredible national peril represented by these newest unemployment reports.

    That is not the case.

Instead, congressional Republicans have decided to obstruct every aspect of the proposed stimulus plan, simply to prove to Obama and the nation they still exist. They want more tax cuts, and further want no part in the wide variety of jobs programs the president wants funded and activated immediately.

Columnist Bob Herbert, writing for The New York Times, explained, "The G.O.P.'s latest campaign is aimed at undermining President Obama's effort to cope with the national economic emergency by attacking the spending in his stimulus package and repeating ad nauseam the Republican mantra for ever more tax cuts. When the G.O.P. talks, nobody should listen. Republicans have argued, with the collaboration of much of the media, that they could radically cut taxes while simultaneously balancing the federal budget, when, in fact, big income-tax cuts inevitably lead to big budget deficits. We listened to the G.O.P. and what do we have now? A trillion-dollar-plus deficit and an economy in shambles."

A little slice of fiscal history: President Franklin Roosevelt, after inheriting the economic rubble left behind by eerily similar Republican economic policies, put the country to work. Millions of unemployed Americans were hired, and paid, by the federal government to build and rebuild America's national infrastructure. The money those workers earned was invested back into the economy by purchasing groceries, clothes and other necessities. Those purchases increased revenues for grocers, farmers, textile plants and clothing stores, which meant more employees had to be hired, and paid, and around it went.

Along the way, two things happened. The country became a better place by way of FDR's National Industrial Recovery Act and the creation of the Works Progress Administration. More importantly, especially regarding our current situation, the Democratic Party was given broad credit and support for the results of these programs. This would have been the result even if World War Two had not interrupted the process.

The Republican Party is always going to talk about the need for tax cuts. If the Treasury Department burned to the ground and every American dollar in the budget was blown out to sea, the GOP would claim we need tax cuts to put out the fire and give incentives for fishermen to go cast their nets into the sea. It doesn't work like that, but the GOP would say it anyway.

But the GOP's adamant opposition to the jobs programs within President Obama's stimulus proposal has nothing to do with the ideological cant of the party. The Republicans want the Obama administration to fail, so they can begin to recoup the losses they absorbed in the last two elections. More than that, they don't want another historic slate of federal programs to be enacted, because those programs might actually work, and a whole new generation of voters would give credit for a revived economy to the Democrats, just as they did after Roosevelt was finished.

The GOP's argument here is a callous, crass and heartless attempt to avoid becoming further marginalized by the effects of their own deplorable stewardship. They are putting the national security of the United States at risk. We cannot defend and improve our country if we are standing in endless unemployment lines.

A friend of mine, a restaurant manager, just got laid off. So did another friend who was a recruiter for a large financial institution. Another friend, a paralegal, was laid off and has not been able to find work for months. A friend's girlfriend was in marketing and got laid off. Another friend's wife was also in marketing and also got laid off. Three other friends of mine besides these have likewise lost their jobs in recent weeks, and none have been able to find anything since.

Those are just some of the people I know. There are millions more like them. The Republican Party will be more than satisfied to see them idle for as long as it takes to make sure the Democrats can't help us out of this mess. It is a disgusting, despicable display.

America needs a job. The Republicans who have jobs and are thwarting this stimulus package should be ashamed. More to the point, they should be dismissed with cause. They do not deserve to be laid off, but should be fired outright.

how about if the dems just

how about if the dems just get a backbone and start doing some pushing themselves?!!! they're always crying about how the republicans are delaying this or that, or using some ploy or 'rarely used' maneuver to get what they want, or to make the dems look bad, fail, etc. then we hear about how supposedly dems are worried about being accused of or 'looking a certain way' politically etc. well mostly they just look like a bunch of kahuna-less idiots who can't stand up take the ball and run with it towards what they (at least) SAY is what they stand for, but gosh golly gee-whiz somehow there's always some republican throwing a monkey wrench into the whole thing. will this bunch of BS ever end?!!!!

I couldn't have put it

I couldn't have put it better myself. As long as 90% of Americans have jobs, it seems so easy to think there is no problem.... That is one of the problems. Those with the attitude that the stimulus is not needed have the secure feeling at many millions of us do not share... for real reasons. It is scary out here!!! I was hopeful on Jan. 20th and now it is looking so like the same ol same ol. The GOP needs to get the whole boot and before our country is down so low that we cannot get up.

No, it will never end. You

No, it will never end. You said it so well -- the Democrats are spineless. The few that have a spine are by themselves -- they can't even get support from the "leadership" and I use that term very loosely. I was a history prof. for over 20 years, and I have seen this before. There really isn't anything new under the sun. I have been predicting this since the Reagan Error, and my predictions became even more vehement by the time of the Shrub Error. I hope that I am wrong, but I predict that Congress will diddle and compromise. What they produce will be too little and too late.

So the republicans are

So the republicans are pushing back - well it's time to steamroll over them and pick up some support from the voters that gladly elected Obama over the usual suspects - there will be no reasoning that will elicit their cooperation.

The Republicans have been

The Republicans have been invited to participate, but their leadership would rather continue with their no government is the only solution rant. Let them sideline themselves. The Democrats have the votes to do this, so they should go ahead. Why do the Republicans sing the praises of small government except when it comes to waging war and putting people in prison?

The Repblican'ts have balls

The Repblican'ts have balls the size of their empty noggins. The Democrackheads are the most timid, nervous people I have ever seen, even when they have the power to run through and over the opposition they are still asking permission and kow-towing, still concerned about...about..what?. Reid and Pelosi are ineffective leaders and I am tired of seeing their meely mouths move on my television. Can we get somebody who isn't scared to kick some butt in the capital PLEASE! We got rid of the rats but there are still roaches scurrying around DC. Perhaps Raid is needed more than aid.

Great article, thanks

Great article, thanks William. Read today that three days after receiving $25 billion in federal bailout funds, Bank of America hosted a conference call with business officials about proposed changes in labor law (Employee Free Trade Act). Their all upset because they may have to start paying people a little more in the future. Listening to Bernie Marcus, the co-founder of Home Depot, talk about how he could have been on "a 350-foot boat out in the Mediterranean," but felt it was more important to engage in this fight against higher labor costs, made me feel very sick. I'll never go to Home Depot again. You can listen to these monsters here (http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/01/27/bank-of-america-hosted-an_n_161248.html).

The cash poured down the

The cash poured down the hole went to AIG for luxuries that were supposed to trickle down. Which Democratic congresscreatures blocked this giant sucking sound? Which Democrats are moving to do something about our slavery/incarceration system? Which Democrats are moving to block huge expenditures in Afghanistan that will only make more enemies by killing with drones? I'm not getting why giving money to big concrete companies and monopoly utilities is much different from giving money to big banks. It's just changing gangs, isn't it? Our choice is bloods or crips, red or blue. Enlightened cities need to invent their own "discount" coupons. With discount coupons, it makes it harder for the IRS to take from us regular people what they didn't take from Geithner. Fortunately lots of gifted lawyers are going to get unemployed also. Oops, there's no money for courts. So, ok, we have to work it out with our neighbors without going downtown. Grow your own whatever, folks, it's DIY-time, big time. Breaking promises isn't change. It's same old, same old.

I think the Democrats don't

I think the Democrats don't fully understand yet the power they actually have. They're been compromised for so long that I don't think they actually realize that they hold the cards. It's sort of like a running back who plays for the worst team in football who finds himself holding the ball and staring at a gaping hole in the line. He sees it, but he pauses for a moment to be absolutely sure, because he's heard of such things, but never has he actually seen one in person. Obama knows he has the power base and the votes necessary to get this thing moving. He's trying to live up to his "bipartisan" rhetoric and give the GOP a chance to climb on board. But at the same time, he has to remind his own party that they actually have the power and I honestly think that, at least in part, they don't fully realize that yet. But Obama didn't claw his way to this point to fail and I believe that even if he has to personally read the riot act to every single Democratic Congressman and Senator, he is going to get this stimulus plan moving.

"They do not deserve to be

"They do not deserve to be laid off, but should be fired outright. " True, but then, it was we who keep putting the same liars and thieves back into office. If we don't want the unrepentant self-serving among us making decisions about how our resources are to be used, we should not elect politicians to government. We asked for what we got, and got what we asked for.

enough already....Its

enough already....Its interesting how the people allow their elected officials or aka, the corporate servants to dabble in the continual disruption of their lives. Case in point, Pfizer dismissed 8000 workers while bidding to buy another company for $60 billion. These 8000 workers should be on the doorstep of the company every day in protest. When will the people stop taking the abuse and start to protest en masse. Waiting on politicians to act in the interest of the common man has most often proven a failure. Yet, we go on expecting it. Its not just the democrats that are seemly spineless, its the majority of the american public.

I would like to see all the

I would like to see all the Republicans fired from their cushy government elected jobs - let them lose their million dollar homes (most probably have at least two) and have to go on unemployment like the rest of us.

It is late in the fourth

It is late in the fourth quarter and our economic team is losing badly. A week ago the ball was handed to our rookie quarterback and new team. After eight dismal years of failing the old GOP pros were benched. It is time for the new quarterback and new team to grab a hold of the economy and run with it. The crowd in the stadium and people all over the country are counting on them to win this battle. So much is riding on this, we can not afford to fail.

Obama was to be commended on

Obama was to be commended on his efforts to erase the red/blue divide. But the clock is running out, and he must put priorities in order. The naked truth is that these blood feuds go back to the Civil War, and he can't dally, letting the Republicans strut and stall, delusional that they still are in power. "This is the moment!" Obama must act now, with or without them. As he said the other day, "I won!" As they drag their feet and drag out their tired arguments, he must let them know the coddling is over. His measures must be passed--and with built-in accountability, oversight and severe penalties for abuse. Those obscene CEO's who escaped with others' money, and those who purchased vacations and corporate jets need to muster a big payback, possibly with a dose of prosecution. Obama, we love you for your ideals, but time is passing, and the ship is sinking....

William, I worry that

William, I worry that comparisons to the FDR programs fail to point out that the America of the 1930s was still capable of using manual labor to achieve many of their goals. Todays corporate and heavily mechanized methods are unlikely to employ many people and would seemingly produce fat revenues for the contractors. Can we turn back the clock? Can we knock down the profit margins and employ enough of the unemployed?

Obama needs to go on TV and

Obama needs to go on TV and appeal to the people who elected him to pressure these Republican fools. They need to understand their cushy jobs are on the line. Obama's stimulus package isn't big enough, but it's a start. The Republicans shuffling around calling for more tax cuts and permanent tax cuts are just playing politics, trying to further pad the pockets of their rich buddies. Obama has the means to take the fight to these idiots.

What did we expect? Routed

What did we expect? Routed Republicans to start chanting "Yes We Can" and "Change We Can Believe In"? They are doing what they do best: obstructing progress, defending the overprivileged and emasculating the Democrats. And, desperately clinging to delusions of relevance despite being trounced in 2006 and 2008 - read my lips: HE WON! I helped make Obama president, admiring, among numerous attributes, his balanced and conciliatory nature. However, the time for negotiation is almost ended, especially with the vanquished, repudiated and hollow GOP. Mr. President, since their approval is uneeded, their partisan clamor can go unheeded. I predict this nonsense will continue for a week or so. At that point, OUR president should proceed with HIS plan and tell the GOP to sit down and shut up. I believe he has the mandate, will and fortitude to drag the wimpish Democratic Congress behind him and make the bold moves he so avidly preached. Godspeed, Barack - you don't need the approval of the GOP to create change we can believe in.

The real truth is America

The real truth is America has been in a recession since Bush stole office and started the debt clock running in overdrive the problem has been none wanted to face that fact until you felt teeth biting YOUR FLANKS! Well you are learning right quick it don`t feel too damn good, now imagine trying to cope with this while existing 300% below poverty level..Even clear out here on the rural plains of Colorado you could buy 4 loaves of wonder bread for a buck in 2000 & gas was $1.29/gal you can lie to yourselves all day long but when one loaf of "generic" bread now costs $2.79 that is more than a 1000% recessionary tax hike over 9 years, you just weren`t looking from below bottom up!

It is so easy to be a

It is so easy to be a know-it-all critic. Now the Republicans are revealed, naked except for the treachery in which they robe themselves. And all the armchair critics -- who were only too glad to go along with GOP tax cutting to "shrink the beast" of government that Reagan long ago said was not the solution, but the problem -- now find themselves too uncomfortable in their own complicity with Right Wing anti-tax, anti-government rhetoric to bring themselves to blame the real villains, the GOP. Instead, they beat up on the Democrats they threw out of office in order to bring in Newt Gingrich and his Contract With America crowd that have now brought America to its knees. Now that Democrats finally have majorities again in Congress for the first time in a decade, the "know-it-all" critics complain that the Democrats can't solve all the problems overnight. Well, it took the GOP a decade to bring America to ruin, so you all might think about giving the Democrats at least one four year term to start turning things around and bringing America back from the precipice -- and maybe you could even try to help out. But then, why would I expect those who are happy to be whiners to take a chance at being part of the solution. After all, it is so easy to simply sit back and criticize those who are trying to help -- and many will listen to the treacherous anti-government Republicans in Congress, and those like Rush Limbaugh in the media, and vote to bring back anyone who will promise to lower their taxes. It is true that many of the people get the government they deserve. Their shortsightedness unfortunately is like crack cocaine -- they are addicted to it, and will go back to shortsighted solutions as soon as they can. Meanwhile, the rest of the nation suffers.

So the rich either get

So the rich either get richer or use a recession to further profits later, in a cut-throat sort of fashion. Like maybe if folks are in a bad enough situation they'll work for less, maybe this is a good time to buy up other companies, or property. Maybe it's just a nice little lull to experiment with cutting costs, but it is rarely a consideration to dip into salaries at the top. Profit figures, I imagine, are there for us to view, but not a companies real story. So how do we get enough information, or even honest information to be proactive along side the president to help level the playing field in America. Or, is it just human nature to have more than others if the opportunity is there and we truly are our own enemy? Is there something we can do to help at all? Buy American? Is there a list that says which companies are good to support? Can we have less (because of the higher initial cost to us) and support small companies here at home? Some folks need to create "a manual for living for your community." A "how to do this right" while juggling two low paying jobs, three kids, aging parents, and every appliance in the house, including the one in your driveway falling apart. I would read it, and I would do everything I could, if I just knew what that was.

The situation makes me think

The situation makes me think that what we need is electronic plebescite democracy. We have to overwhelm the Republican congress people with emails, phone calls. And then we have to work to defeat them all. It's only less than two years before the House of Representative are all back up for election.

I agree. The repub's lost

I agree. The repub's lost big because we all know there needs to be REAL change and the dem's need to let them know that. The dem's now have the power and the people behind them to push through just about anything that would help put the middle class back to work. The key is "Job Creation" and job losses are snowballing on us fast. The fact that the Dem's are not just ramming this through shows us that they are mostly on the same page as the repub's and are not confident in the stimulus plan either. And when you think about it, this "create another trillion dollars out of thin air and spend it somewhere" is really no change from what they did with the war spending and the bank bailout except that it puts the funding in a different, albeit better, sector of the economy. I'm not saying that the stimulus doesn't need to happen, but where is the "real change" that we are promised? Here are the "real changes" that need to be included in the stimulus: Share the work- Establish the 30 hr workweek across the nation, with all overtime as double time. That will solve the unemployment problem by making a 25% increased demand for man-hours. That demand will drive wages up slightly and make up for individuals lost income. At the same time the improved productivity of having 25% more people sharing the same workload, and increased motivation and attitudes of employees, will offset the costs to employers and create a more level playing field. Make the tax base fair- At todays cost of living, an individual supporting his or herself making under 25,000 a year, or a couple making under 35,000 combined, or a family of 4 making under 45,000 combined should not pay any taxes at all or even have to file. This would solve the β€œhousing collapse” by helping the lower income working class so they can actually afford a home. Everybody needs a place to live but we can't all make 6 figures. Anybody who thinks that’s not fair does not remember what it’s like to start out or to actually earn your living the hard and honorable way.

If the Dems wanted to do

If the Dems wanted to do something useful that would not provoke GOP opposition, they could vote to repeal Federal tax withholding on paychecks, which only dates back to WWII(as a "temporary" measure), and its elimination would free billions immediately and directly into the working man's pocket. He would still be liable for taxes, but not until 2010.

Altho with a great deal less

Altho with a great deal less sophistication and detail, I'd begun to think that the Republicans would never back anything effective, for the reasons you've mentioned. Thank you for an insightful essay on what is going on.

What a steaming pile of

What a steaming pile of crap! The calculus is very simple: the only way to make money is to produce something of value that you can actually sell. Just printing money so people can be "employed", indebting future generations in perpetuity, will give people a balance in the bank, but it will be worth nothing. We must suffer; this and past generations purchased such a fate for us.

all capitalist ventures are

all capitalist ventures are essentially pyramid schemes, from the small business where the owner represents the tip of the pyramid, to entire macroeconomies, national and now apparently global, where the tiny percentage of the elite have sequestered pornographically disproportionate percentages of wealth. when the base of the pyramid has no money or incentive to feed the top, the whole thing collapses. then maybe we can start over with some system of wealth/resource distribution that doesn't reward and protect pathological greed.

No taxes at all for under

No taxes at all for under $35,000 - that is the problem. Expecting the people making 50,000+ to pay for everyone. How is that right?? Rediculous! People making $75,000+ work so hard and pay rediculous amounts of taxes already - enough is enough. All the millions that were spent on Obama's Inauguration should have been put into the unemployment fund or given to the poor. What a waste of money - they should feel ashamed. How was that a necessary use of Government funds?! With the economy the way it is, the his Inauguration should have been a small affair.

The guy who wrote this

The guy who wrote this Article is obviously a democrat.

The author of this story is

The author of this story is a complete idiot. The Republicans caused this problem?!? And now they're opposing Obama for the sake of politics?!? Please!!! They're opposing the stimulus because it makes no sense, is nothing but pork, and won't solve a thing. Deficit spending to fund the welfare state is what got us into this problem, more deficit spending is not going to solve it, but will only make it worse. Although this problem is multi-faceted, its root cause is that Democrats turned Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac into influence peddling, vote buying, welfare programs. Throw in all the other endless entitlements we can't afford, and well you get the picture. And for the record, FDR's programs didn't solve America's problems during the Depression, it only prolonged the misery. Not to mention his confiscation of gold, paying people for it in dollars which he then intentionally devalued, screwing them out of their savings. Nice guy. And the government still practices something similar through engineered inflation. All to fund the welfare state through deficit spending. And we all know who is behind the welfare state, and it isn't Republicans!!!

Rebut to snoop dog William

Rebut to snoop dog William Ripskull (not verified)'s remarks: Party of one, party of one - your crow awaits you!

The problem with taxes for

The problem with taxes for corporations, is the belief that if a company can afford to make a product it will make it, and then people will be employed. What's missing here is the fact that, if no one can afford to buy a product there will be no market for it and no reason to manufacture it no matter how good the tax breaks look. We need to start at the bottom for a change and help the little guys increase their spending power. I'm sure many people feel it's all just a "which came first the chicken or the egg?" question, but we haven't been able to give the' purchasing power' side a chance in eight years and look where it's gotten us.

Has it occurred to anyone

Has it occurred to anyone else that if they took the cost of this economic "fix-it" (or even just ONE WEEK's worth of the cost of the Iraq war), they could divide that amount between every man, woman and child in the USA making EVERYone a millionaire probably five times over? Then we could all sit back, hire foreigners (make them legal aliens) to do all the work while we sit back and collect interest on our numerous millions of dollars?? That'd put the banks back in business. It'd put the factories back in business. It'd put people back in the tax-paying business (legal aliens pay taxes) ... We'd be traveling, (put the airlines back in business), buying cars. Everybody who wanted to work would have a job and everybody who didn't would be rich. What a great idea. But ... nahhhh, that would make too much sense for any politico to think of it. P.S. Mr. Pitt, I love the way your mind works.

Sandy, Your math is off but

Sandy, Your math is off but you are correct. (There are about 300 million US citiizens. It would take $3 trillion dollars to give each one just $10,000.) The government should start giving tax breaks and lending to those vast majority of individuals at the middle and bottom. Ripskull, Simply repeating a mantra over and over again,--following the corporate media's tune like a monkey on a leash--will not lead to a very interesting life.
