Washington - President Barack Obama plans to nominate Sen. Judd Gregg as commerce secretary on Tuesday, the White House confirmed on the eve of the announcement as the New Hampshire Republican disclosed an apparent deal that would keep his seat out of Democratic hands.

"I have made it clear to the Senate leadership on both sides of the aisle and to the governor that I would not leave the Senate if I felt my departure would cause a change in the makeup of the Senate," Gregg said Monday in a statement. The White House confirmed the Gregg choice on the condition of anonymity because the announcement had not yet been made.

New Hampshire Gov. John Lynch confirmed the "understanding," stopping just short of promising to appoint a Republican or an independent to serve out the remaining two years of Gregg's term.

The deal would give Obama his top choice for a team tasked with steering the nation out of recession. Republicans get to keep Gregg's seat for two more years, retaining the crucial 41 Senate seats they need to filibuster majority Democrats.

And Democrats, who control 56 seats and caucus with two independents, stand a better chance of flipping Gregg's seat into their ranks in two years by running a candidate against his rookie replacement or an empty seat than Gregg himself.

The White House tried to stay out of the back and forth. But officials there did nothing to squelch the expectation that Gregg would be nominated to the post.

"Obviously, the president has great respect for Senator Gregg," White House press secretary Robert Gibbs said Monday. "I'm not going to get into personnel announcements before we are there."

Getting to a deal took days of negotiating after it became known last week that Obama was considering appointing the former Budget Committee chairman from New Hampshire to his Cabinet.

Gregg would become the third Republican in the Cabinet, if confirmed. The others are Defense Secretary Robert Gates and Transportation Secretary Ray Lahood.

The deal spares Gregg blame for delivering Democrats complete control of the Senate and a re-election campaign in Democratic-leaning New Hampshire.

Lynch's agreement, meanwhile, shores up his bipartisan credentials at a time when he's confronting a decades-old budget crisis at home.

The Republican expected to be named to Gregg's seat is Bonnie Newman, who served as Gregg's chief of staff during his time in the House. Newman is a veteran of the Reagan White House. Under the deal, she would not run in the 2010 election.

Any "deal" about Gregg's

Any "deal" about Gregg's seat should also include a "deal" for Norm Coleman to drop his desperate, obstructionist bid in Minnesota and seat Al Franken immediately.

What a load of utter and

What a load of utter and complete crap! Note to Republicons, you lost the the office of president (and couldn't steal it this time either!) and both houses of Congress. Get over it. The good people of this nation have spoken, and quite loudly, I might add. Get to work on the massive challenges that we all face.

The economy is in the toilet

The economy is in the toilet and business / commerce is mostly to blame (along with Bush's War Machine and his basic arrogance) and the Repugnicans continue to play political games. Does anyone think that Gregg was nominated so that the Dems could get his seat? --- So, are we agreed that NH may not appo0int the BEST Senate replacement simply because of politics? Disgusting...

Silly me, I thought this was

Silly me, I thought this was supposed to emulate a democracy.

What is President Obama

What is President Obama thinking about ? Hasn't he done more than his share of meeting Republicans half way ? Who is turning the screws on him that he feels that he has to Give three seats in His Cabinet to Republicans ? Aren't there enough qualified Democrats and Independents to pick from ? It is looking as though we will have the same bunch running our country as we have had for the past eight years. What is going on ? I sure have plenty of questions and no satisfactory answers. I'm sure I am not the only one asking the same questions.

This is nothing less than

This is nothing less than rewarding the gop for years of intransigence. Prez O better wake up in a hurry and stop capitulating to these people. The right wing policies of the past thirty years have been a complete failure, unless you count stealing from the working class to further enrich the wealthy as success. They should be told to shut up and sit down. Did they try one iota to cooperate with Mr. Clinton or Mr. O to solve the country's problems? No, they made them much worse by obstructing any initiative that did not directly benefit the ruling elite. That lesson should have been learned when no repubs voted for the stimulus pkg despite the fact that it had plenty of pork for the supply siders. I always thought that Senators had been democratically elected since 1913. Recent events have proven this is not the case, and rewarding the gop for their counterproductive interference will make the situation worse. But what the hell, we'll be bankrupt in a couple of years anyway, since no politician has the guts to cut the military budget.

That's Blackmail and in a

That's Blackmail and in a civilized country, would be considered a crime. If Gregg doesn't want to be Commerce Secretary I'm sure there are plenty of Democrats who do.
