The Obama Code

As President Obama prepares to address a joint session of Congress, what can we expect to hear?

The pundits will stress the nuts-and-bolts policy issues: the banking system, education, energy, health care. But beyond policy, there will be a vision of America - a moral vision and a view of unity that the pundits often miss.

What they miss is the Obama Code.

For the sake of unity, the President tends to express his moral vision indirectly. Like other self-aware and highly articulate speakers, he connects with his audience using what cognitive scientists call the "cognitive unconscious." Speaking naturally, he lets his deepest ideas simply structure what he is saying. If you follow him, the deep ideas are communicated unconsciously and automatically. The Code is his most effective way to bring the country together around fundamental American values.

For supporters of the President, it is crucial to understand the Code in order to talk overtly about the old values our new President is communicating. It is necessary because tens of millions of Americans - both conservatives and progressives - don't yet perceive the vital sea change that Obama is bringing about.

The word "code" can refer to a system of either communication or morality. President Obama has integrated the two. The Obama Code is both moral and linguistic at once. The President is using his enormous skills as a communicator to express a moral system. As he has said, budgets are moral documents. His economic program is tied to his moral system and is discussed in the Code, as are just about all of his other policies.

Behind the Obama Code are seven crucial intellectual moves that I believe are historically, practically, and cognitively appropriate, as well as politically astute. They are not all obvious, and jointly they may seem mysterious. That is why it is worth sorting them out one-by-one.

    1. Values Over Programs

The first move is to distinguish programs from the value systems they represent. Every policy has a material aspect - the nuts and bolts of how it works - plus a typically implicit cognitive aspect that represents the values and ideas behind the nuts and bolts. The President knows the difference. He understands that those who see themselves as "progressive" or "conservative" all too often define those words in terms of programs rather than values. Even the programs championed by progressives may not fit what the President sees as the fundamental values of the country. He is seeking to align the programs of his administration with those values.

The potential pushback will come not just from conservatives who do not share his values, but just as much from progressives who make the mistake of thinking that programs are values and that progressivism is defined by a list of programs. When some of those programs are cut as economically secondary or as unessential, their defenders will inevitably see this as a conservative move rather than a move within an overall moral vision they share with the President.

This separation between values and programs lies behind the President's pledge to cut programs that don't serve those values and support those that do - no matter whether they are proposed by Republicans or Democrats. The President's idealistic question is, what policies serve what values? - not what political interests?

    2. Progressive Values Are American Values

President Obama's second intellectual move concerns what the fundamental American values are. In Moral Politics, I described what I found to be the implicit, often unconscious, value systems behind progressive and conservative thought. Progressive thought rests, first, on the value of empathy - putting oneself in other people's shoes, seeing the world through their eyes, and therefore caring about them. The second principle is acting on that care, taking responsibility both for oneself and others, social as well as individual responsibility. The third is acting to make oneself, the country, and the world better - what Obama has called an "ethic of excellence" toward creating "a more perfect union" politically.

Historian Lynn Hunt, in Inventing Human Rights, has shown that those values, beginning with empathy, lie historically behind the human rights expressed in the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution.

Obama, in various interviews and speeches, has provided the logical link. Empathy is not mere sympathy. Putting oneself in the shoes of others brings with it the responsibility to act on that empathy - to be "our brother's keeper and our sister's keeper" - and to act to improve ourselves, our country, and the world.

The logic is simple: Empathy is why we have the values of freedom, fairness, and equality - for everyone, not just for certain individuals. If we put ourselves in the shoes of others, we will want them to be free and treated fairly. Empathy with all leads to equality: no one should be treated worse than anyone else. Empathy leads us to democracy: to avoid being subject indefinitely to the whims of an oppressive and unfair ruler, we need to be able to choose who governs us and we need a government of laws.

Obama has consistently maintained that what I, in my writings, have called "progressive" values are fundamental American values. From his perspective, he is not a progressive; he is just an American. That is a crucial intellectual move.

Those empathy-based moral values are the opposite of the conservative focus on individual responsibility without social responsibility. They make it intolerable to tolerate a President who is The Decider - who gets to decide without caring about or listening to anybody. Empathy-based values are opposed to the pure self-interest of a laissez-faire "free market," which assumes that greed is good and that seeking self-interest will magically maximize everyone's interests.

They oppose a purely self-interested view of America in foreign policy. Obama's foreign policy is empathy-based, concerned with people as well as states - with poverty, education, disease, water, the rights of women and children, ethnic cleansing, and so on around the world.

How are such values expressed? Take a look at the inaugural speech. Empathy: "the kindness to take in a stranger when the levees break, the selflessness of workers who would rather cut their hours than see a friend lose their job, the firefighter's courage to storm a stairway filled with smoke, but also a parent's willingness to nurture a child..." Responsibility to ourselves and others: "We have duties to ourselves, the nation, and the world." The ethic of excellence: "there is nothing so satisfying to the spirit, so defining of character, than giving our all to a difficult task." They define our democracy: "This is the meaning of our liberty and our creed."

The same values apply to foreign policy: "To the people of poor nations, we pledge to work alongside you to make your farms flourish and make clean waters flow; to nourish starved bodies and feed hungry minds." And to religion as well: By quoting language like "our brother's keeper," he is communicating that mere individual responsibility will not get you into Heaven, that social responsibility and making the world better are required.

    3. Biconceptualism and the New Bipartisanship

The third crucial idea behind the Obama Code is biconceptualism, the knowledge that a great many people who identify themselves ideologically as conservatives, or politically as Republicans or Independents, share those fundamental American values - at least on certain issues. Most "conservatives" are not thoroughgoing movement conservatives, but are what I have called "partial progressives" sharing Obama's American values on many issues.

Where such folks agree with him on values, Obama tries, and will continue to try, to work with them on those issues if not others. And, he assumes - correctly, I believe - that the more they come to think in terms of those American values, the less they will think in terms of opposing conservative values.

Biconceptualism lay behind his invitation to Rick Warren to speak at the inaugural. Warren is a biconceptual, like many younger evangelicals. He shares Obama's views of the environment, poverty, health, and social responsibility, though he is otherwise a conservative. Biconceptualism is behind his "courting" of Republican members of Congress. The idea is not to accept conservative moral views, but to find those issues where individual Republicans already share what he sees as fundamentally American values.

He has "reached across the aisle" to Richard Lugar on nuclear proliferation, but not on economics.

Biconceptualism is central to Obama's attempts to achieve unity - a unity based on his understanding of American values. The current economic failure gives him an opening to speak about the economy in terms of those ideals: caring about all, prosperity for all, responsibility for all by all, and good jobs for all who want to work.

I think Obama is correct about biconceptualism of this sort - at least where the overwhelming proportion of Americans is concerned. When the President spoke at the Lincoln Day dinner recently about sensible Midwestern Republicans, he meant biconceptual Republicans, who are progressive and/or pragmatic on many issues.

But hardcore movement conservatives tend to be more ideological and less biconceptual than their constituents. In the recent stimulus vote, the hardcore movement conservatives kept party discipline (except for three Senate votes) by threatening to run opposition candidates against anyone who broke ranks. They were able to enforce this because the conservative message machine is strong in their districts and there is no nationwide progressive message machine operating in those districts. The effectiveness of the conservative message machine led to Obama making a rare mistake in communication, the mistake of saying out loud in Florida not to think of Rush Limbaugh, thus violating the first rule of framing and giving Rush Limbaugh even greater power.

Biconceptual, partly progressive, Republicans do exist in Congress, and the President is not going to give up on them. But as long as the conservative message machine can activate its values virtually unopposed in conservative districts, movement conservatives can continue to pressure biconceptual Republicans and keep them from voting their conscience on many issues. This is why a nationwide progressive message machine needs to be organized if the President is to achieve unity through biconceptualism.

    4. Protection and Empowerment

The fourth idea behind the Obama Code is the President's understanding of government - "not whether our government is too big or too small, but whether it works." This depends on what "works" means. The word sounds purely pragmatic, but it is moral in operation.

The idea is that government has twin moral missions: protection and empowerment. Protection includes not just military and police protection, but protections for the environment, consumers, workers, pensioners, disaster victims, and investors.

Empowerment is what his stimulus package is about: it includes education and other forms of infrastructure - roads, bridges, communications, energy supply, the banking system and stock market. The moral mission of government is simple: no one can earn a living in America or live an American life without protection and empowerment by the government. The stimulus package is basically an empowerment package. Taxes are what you pay for living in America, rather than in Congo or Bangladesh. And the more money you make from government protection and empowerment, the more you owe in return. Progressive taxation is a matter of moral accounting. Tax cuts for the middle class mean that the middle class hasn't been getting as much as it has been contributing to the nation's productivity for many years.

This view of government meshes with our national ideal of equality. There needs to be moral equality: equal protection and equal empowerment. We all deserve health care protection, retirement protection, worker protection, employment protection, protection of our civil liberties, and investment protection. Protection and empowerment. That's what "works" means - "whether it helps families find jobs at a decent wage, care they can afford, a retirement that is dignified."

    5. Morality and Economics Fit Together

Crises are times of opportunity. Budgets are moral statements. President Obama has put these ideas together. His economic program is a moral program and conversely. Why the quartet of leading economic issues - education, energy, health, banking? Because they are at the heart of government's moral mission of protection and empowerment, and correspondingly, they are what is needed to act on empathy, social and personal responsibility, and making the future better.

The economic crisis is also an opportunity. It requires Obama to spend hundreds of billions of dollars on the right things to do.

    6. Systemic Causation and Systemic Risk

Conservatives tend to think in terms of direct causation. The overwhelming moral value of individual, not social, responsibility requires that causation be local and direct. For each individual to be entirely responsible for the consequences of his or her actions, those actions must be the direct causes of those consequences. If systemic causation is real, then the most fundamental of conservative moral - and economic - values is fallacious.

Global ecology and global economics are prime examples of systemic causation. Global warming is fundamentally a system phenomenon. That is why the very idea threatens conservative thinking. And the global economic collapse is also systemic in nature. That is at the heart of the death of the conservative principle of the laissez-faire free market, where individual short-term self-interest was supposed to be natural, moral, and the best for everybody. The reality of systemic causation has left conservatism without any real ideas to address global warming and the global economic crisis.

With systemic causation goes systemic risk. The old rational actor model taught in economics and political science ignored systemic risk. Risk was seen as local and governed by direct causation, that is, by short-term individual decisions. The investment banks acted on their own short-term risk, based on short-term assumptions, for example, that housing prices would continue to rise or that bundles of mortgages once secure for the short term would continue to be "secure" and could be traded as "securities."

The systemic nature of ecological and economic causation and risk have resulted in the twin disasters of global warming and global economic breakdown. Both must be dealt with on a systematic, global, long-term basis. Regulating risk is global and long-term, and so what is required are world-wide institutions that carry out that regulation in systematic ways and monitor causation and risk systemically, not just locally.

President Obama understands this, though much of the country does not. Part of his challenge will be to formulate policies that carry out these ideas and to communicate these ideas as well as possible to the public.

    7. Contested Concepts and Patriotic Language

As President, Barack Obama must speak in patriotic language. But all patriot language in this country is "contested." Every major patriotic term has a core meaning that we all understand the same way. But that common core meaning is very limited in its application. Most uses of patriotic language are extended from the core on the basis of either conservative or progressive values to produce meanings that are often opposite from each other.

I've written a whole book - "Whose Freedom?" - on the word "freedom" as used by conservatives and progressives. In his second inaugural, George W. Bush used "freedom," "free," and "liberty" over and over - first, with its common meaning, then shifting to its conservative meaning: defending "freedom" as including domestic spying, torture and rendition, denial of habeus corpus, invading a country that posed no threat to us, a "free market" based on greed and short-term profits for the wealthy, denying sex education and access to women's health facilities, denying health care to the poor, and leading to the killing and maiming of innocent civilians in Iraq by the hundreds of thousands, all in the name of "freedom."

It was anything but a progressive's view of freedom - and anything but the view intended in the Declaration of Independence or the Constitution.

For forty years, from the late 1960's through 2008, conservatives managed, through their extensive message machine, to reframe much of our political discourse to fit their worldview. President Obama is reclaiming our patriotic language after decades of conservative dominance, to fit what he has correctly seen as the ideals behind the founding of our country.

"Freedom" will no longer mean what George W. Bush meant by it. Guantanamo will be closed, torture outlawed, the market regulated. Obama's inaugural address was filled with framings of patriotic concepts to fit those ideals. Not just the concept of freedom, but also equality, prosperity, unity, security, interests, challenges, courage, purpose, loyalty, patriotism, virtue, character, and grace. Look at these words in his inaugural address and you will see how Obama has situated their meaning within his view of fundamental American values: empathy, social and well as personal responsibility, improving yourself and your country. We can expect further reclaiming of patriotic language throughout his administration.

All this is what "change" means. In his policy proposals, the President is trying to align his administration's policies with the fundamental values of the Framers of our Constitution. In seeking "bipartisan" support, he is looking beyond political affiliations to those who share those values on particular issues. In his economic policy, he is realigning our economy with the moral missions of government: protection and empowerment for all.

    It's Us, Not Just Him

The President is the best political communicator of our age. He has the bully pulpit. He gets media attention from the press. His website is running a permanent campaign, Organizing for Obama, run by his campaign manager, David Plouffe. It seeks issue-by-issue support from his huge mailing list. There are plenty of progressive blogs. MoveOn.org now has over five million members. And yet that is nowhere near enough.

The conservative message machine is huge and still going. There are dozens of conservative think tanks, many with very large communications budgets. The conservative leadership institutes are continuing to turn out thousands of trained conservative spokespeople every year.

The conservative apparatus for language creation is still functioning. Conservative talking points are still going out to their network of spokespeople, who are still being booked on TV and radio around the country. About 80% of the talking heads on TV are conservatives. Rush Limbaugh and Fox News are as strong as ever.

There are now progressive voices on MSNBC, Comedy Central, and Air America, but they are still overwhelmed by the Right's enormous megaphone. Republicans in Congress can count on overwhelming message support in their home districts and homes states. That is one reason why they were able to stonewall on the President's stimulus package. They had no serious media competition at home pounding out the Obama vision day after day.

Such national, day-by-day media competition is necessary. Democrats need to build it. Democratic think tanks are strong on policy and programs, but weak on values and vision. Without the moral arguments based on the Obama values and vision, the policymakers most likely would be unable to regularly address both independent voters and the Limbaugh-Fox News audiences in conservative Republican strongholds.

The President and his administration cannot build such a communication system, nor can the Democrats in Congress. The DNC does not have the resources. It will be up to supporters of the Obama values, not just supporters on the issues, to put such a system in place. Despite all the organizing strength of Obama supporters, no such organizing effort is now going on. If none is put together, the movement conservatives will face few challenges of fundamental values in their home constituencies and will be able to go on stonewalling with impunity.

That will make the President's vision that much harder to carry out.

    Summary

The Obama Code is based on seven deep, insightful, and subtle intellectual moves. What President Obama has been attempting in his speeches is a return to the original frames of the Framers, reconstituting what it means to be an American, to be patriotic, to be a citizen and to share in both the sacrifices and the glories of our country. In seeking "bipartisan" support, he is looking beyond political affiliations to those who share those values on particular issues. In his economic plan, he is attempting to realign our economy with the moral missions of government: protection and empowerment for all.

The President hasn't fooled the radical ideological conservatives in Congress. They know progressive values when they see them - and they see them in their own colleagues and constituents too often for comfort. The radical conservatives are aware that this economic crisis threatens not only their political support, but the very underpinnings of conservative ideology itself.

Nonetheless, their brains have not been changed by facts. Movement conservatives are not fading away. They think their conservative values are the real American values. They still have their message machine and they are going to make the most of it. The ratings for Fox News and Rush Limbaugh are rising.

Without a countervailing communications system on the Democratic side, they can create a lot of trouble, not just for the President, not just for the nation, but on a global scale, for the environmental and economic future of the world.

George Lakoff, Can there

George Lakoff, Can there be a possibility that you are putting President Obama into your shoes? Can you take the words he has said and carry them too far, to fit your concepts? I don't know. Wouldn't it "work" to do a followup article after the speech and see how you did? I admit, somewhat educated as I like to think I am, this analysis is very abstract. But I shall reread it.

Thank you, George, for this

Thank you, George, for this insightful and deep commentary on the way Obama is conducting himself, and going beyond the what of his actions.

This article exemplifies what George Lakoff and I have developed together during our time at the Rockridge Institute - what we call "cognitive policy". I encourage interested readers to learn more about this powerful new perspective on political thought and behavior:

Thank You Mr. Lakoff. I

Thank You Mr. Lakoff. I don't understand why this analysis is abstract. For me, it requires honest thought. Keep up the good work for it is grounding.

Jeff, Which think tanks

Jeff,

Which think tanks are you referring to? George Lakoff is a professor at UC, Berkeley. I am the director of a social business venture that provides educational and research services.

Also, the "brainwashing techniques" you refer to are widely used by elites, especially by conservative strategists like Karl Rove and Frank Luntz. Such people don't write articles for the general public explaining what they're doing.

People like George Lakoff and myself are seeking to empower the populace with deeper knowledge of the political mind. We ardently believe in the democratization of knowledge, which is why we publish our works on sites like Truthout. This is very different from the strategies that take place behind closed doors with no accountability to the public.

Feel free to disagree with any of Lakoff's analysis. But take care that you don't undermine the efforts of people working on your behalf just because you've been burned in the past by political operatives. We've all been burned. Now many of us, George included, are creating new tools to transcend deceptive practices and raise the bar for political norms.

Kudos, Professor Lakoff.

Kudos, Professor Lakoff. This is extraordinarily helpful and rings as a very defensible analysis. You have identified a depth to President Obama's (commitment to) authenticity that is absolutely critical to understanding the revolutionary nature of what he's doing - both rhetorically and in practice. As a progressive who's become very dismayed with what I consider to be a lot of knee-jerk hostility directed at Obama by progressives for (what is perceived to be) his failure to more assertively advocate on behalf of an allegedly progressive vision, I also find this to be very personally refreshing. Validating, even. Thank you.

Never judge a man till you

Never judge a man till you walked a mile in his moccasins. We the People believe in him .Obama wants to change the way Washington does Business. Obama has stepped into a nest of Hawks, heartless, greedy and ruthless people .DOD (department of defense) has been running Our country many times over they have been sleeping with the CIA. Charming and well reasoned,

Charming and well reasoned, but if Obama continues to allow drones to bomb people in Pakistan and Afghanistan, it won't amount to much. If he declines to indict Cheney and Rumsfeld, we'll know we've been cruelly snookered.

Thank you, George, for the

Thank you, George, for the exceptional explanation of our new President's depth and how it manifests in his honest communications meant for all of us to hear on a deeper level. My training and experience in NLP has been helpful for many years in truly "listening" to what is actually being conveyed by an individual's choice orf words, tone of voice, gestures, facial expressions and body language while speaking. I had suggested to some people in our government that they might want to look into NLP for enhancing communication skills to counter the negative, repetitious Neocon messages that held so much sway over so many citizens. Never heard back from them though! Maybe my choice of words in writing to them weren't all that great! Frank Swift

What interesting and thought

What interesting and thought provoking ideas. I will also reread it and share with friends more intellectually savvy than I am. Thank you.

Thank you, Mr. Lakoff, for

Thank you, Mr. Lakoff, for educating us and providing direction for the American, progressive movement. I always learn so much from your writings. With Obama as leader and you as educator, we can move forward from the depths of dysfunction within which our country has been flailing for eight long years.

I appreciate your passion

I appreciate your passion but can we post this in three years for a chuckle... Come on guys the WHO aren't even American citizens and they wrote the song about our presidents... "Meet the new boss same as the old boss". When are we going to learn?

17, 000 more troops in

17, 000 more troops in Afghanistan. 60,000 troops in Afghanistan for the foreseeable future. Frankly, I think all this talk of an Obama "code" and "cognative policy" is hogwash. He is escalating an American war, enacting policy that is the antithesis of his campaign branding (that of an "anti-war" candidate.) And in regards to Cynthia Boaz's comment, I did not vote for Obama nor do I support his policies now because I heard him pledge to send 3 more brigades to Afghanistan during the campaign. This is not a knee jerk reaction, but a principled understanding. I lost someone very close to me in Fallujah. When I marched against the war, I did not do it out of some vague dislike of an opposing political party. No, I marched because I couldn't remove the image of people dieing over there from my mind. I hope that Truthout does not continue to soften its criticism of our executive branch. Afghanistan will be a quagmire. We have lost the support of the Afghan people as a result of our air bombing of civilians. I remember viewing "Fallujah: The Hidden Massacre" on Truthout back in 2006 and being shocked by the indiscriminate use of white phosphorous in an urban setting. This site used to be about providing uncompromising coverage of American occupation. Please return to providing that service, we desperately need it in this country.

This article requires

This article requires re-reading for me, but I can say that it affirms my belief that President Obama has developed what I have called a "Master Plan" for leadership. Initially, I was puzzled by some of his cabinet appointments, and seeming hesitation to deal head on with recalcitrant Republicans, but this essay clarifies his position for me.

The Obama Code and your

The Obama Code and your interpretation reminds me of moving to New York City in 1977. The city was on its knees economically and morale was so low. Well shortly thereafter Ed Koch was elected Mayor. In so many words, he began a "hey people listen-up campaign everywhere he went, whenever he spoke'' - This is New York. We're the greatest 'city in the world. Let's get busy and make it back into that and get off of our woeful mentality" Something like that. Well, it worked and his direct communications with the citizens rolled into a massive revival. Go Obama! Talk to Ed Koch when you get discouraged. He's my true political hero.

Every time I hear you speak

Every time I hear you speak or read your words, I am enlightened. Inspired by you, I seek out those with whom I disagree politically because I now have the tools to find common ground. An extended family member, the farrier, a shop foreman; all of them; regular people who are avid supporters of conservative talk radio have recently walked away from conversations with me... bewildered by the common ground that they hold with a progressive thinker. I read Joe Brewer's article in Truthout earlier today and I can't say enough about what you and he are doing for the progressive movement by your clear minded assessment of our current political realities. Our society is benefitting deeply from your efforts. Thanks!

Still, concrete programs are

Still, concrete programs are importantly in the end the "operational definition" of values held, advanced, defended. Consider what it means if we uphold such things as extraordinary rendition, or use the power of the executive branch to block the attempt to recover the Bush Administration's "disappeared" e-mail messages relevant to its politicization of the Justice Department, or to positively hinder the investigation of possible war crimes. (Is it only the crimes of the outgoing administration that are going to be excused here?) It's important to communicate the values attributed to Obama in the article here. But it's also important to uphold them. Have I erred in assuming that the values under discussion are inconsistent with the policies I've cited?

"Values" ahead of "specific

"Values" ahead of "specific programs"? mmm... OK. "Protection and empowerment" for individuals, groups, and those to whom we choose to extend it? Sure! I guess my problem with this is that, after some deep thought, I realize that I'm a biconceptual, dammit... & I have seen the Rocky Horror movie- & I know what that Means! Mercy! ^..^

Perhaps one way of reframing

Perhaps one way of reframing the shouting match of the republican noise maschine is to stop calling them "conservatives".

I'm not sure about codes,

I'm not sure about codes, but the value of the words themselves seem to be lacking, in that pre-election words and concepts are so clearly non existant in the post election actions, including cabinet choices. Reflecting on the concepts of codes verses Orwellian Newspeak, I'm unclear of the difference.

Thanks, Prof. Lakoff!!!

Thanks, Prof. Lakoff!!! This is the best of the year thus far. The cognitive vision puts much that is otherwise lost in perspective. The other aspect of the Obama phenomenon is that we still do not have the proper language to analyze the fact that he is developing a symbiotic relationship with the vast majority of the planet whom he is also serving. We will need to delve into this more deeply since it will start affecting our individual and collective lives if it is not already doing so (I personally suspect that many votes in the last election came from the world-wide Obama phenomenon's influence on the small 4% of the American population). The right wing is going to die from tantrum fits with this man who transcends all their levels of comprehension - I love it.

This is outstanding

This is outstanding commentary, and it, predictably, brought out the conservative naysayers and skeptics. The me generation never went away, instead it joined the republican party, which often seems totally devoid of any sense of community, morality or responsibility. Invariably, these are the people who create the conditions that lead to bread lines, and then find devious ways to get to the front of the queue. It is worth observing that the virtual bankruptcy of the nation is paralleled by an impoverished sense of morality and value. Your observations about conservative double-speak and contested language were extremely enlightening. Thanks.

Balm to my brain.

Balm to my brain.

What a great codebreaker!

What a great codebreaker! I do enjoy your analysis. Specifically - I note that I feel the most uplifted when Obama is transmitting that progressive values are American values. I'd follow him anywhere when he is able to display and convince such empathy from people. There's a great book on progressive values and an agenda for the Obama admin: Thinking Big.

I agree with all of this,

I agree with all of this, but nothing much is going to get changed, I believe, until the very practical political facts of life are changed by the way we elect our politicians. That means campaign finance reform (and eternal vigilance following).

Compassion and empathy are

Compassion and empathy are qualities deeply embedded in the biology of humans through four million years of scavenging and foraging and then hunting and herding in nomadic hominid groups requiring sharing of perishable foods in order to survive in an interdependent network. Less than ten thousand years ago, with the advent of agriculture, did greed become useful for survival when groves and farmland required permanent ownership of land and when grains could be stored and hoarded. This required protective force to keep ownership. Thus, arose armies, nation states, and moral philosophies to protect and justify greed and inequality in the social order. In our age of nuclear arms, complex systems extremely vulnerable to terrorist attack or breakdown, and technologies that threaten our environment there can be no successful strategy for winning by dominance. Our social and economic institutions built on an erroneous philosophy of greed being a good, necessary and a primary quality of humans are proving to be unworkable. The social experiment of the last 5000 years (a blip in our evolutionary history) is a dead end. We must build new structures based on a partnership model rather than a domination model in order to survive. Those "conservatives" clinging to the old religion are espousing strategies, not for survival of the civilization, but of their being the last to die. Thefamily social structures they have lived in produce developmental deficits which truncate their own humanity by destroying their ability to feel empathy for any except them and theirs. They are like abused children reliving the trauma of their childhood (but in the perpetrator role) and passing on the trauma to others. They did not receive support for their empathy and it has gone underground. They are social psychopaths. To recover their humanity they need "help". They may be crazy but they aren't dumb. For our future survival we must learn how to recognize them and to limit them.

Having always been loathe

Having always been loathe to vote for Republican candidates, I can at least acknowledge the fact that all Republicans are not alike. Those neo-cons are only a fringe element, and they don't represent the values and beliefs of all Republicans. The majority of them embrace values often tagged "progressive", or what Obama prefers to characterize as traditional American values: a shared sense of responsibility for the common good; equality, openness and fairness; the basic principles of democracy and so forth. Whatever they're called, these values are the glue that keeps our world civilized. They alone hold the potential of a better life, of bringing out the best in us all. As time passes, as the human population continues growing while the world shrinks, this issue of inclusion-versus-exclusion grows more dire, more a matter of life or death. Obama's got his work cut out for him. I'm not ready to judge him yet. I can only pray he'll be strong enough to resist pressure from our pampered elite, whose interests are toxic to the rest of us and denigrate the common good.

Progressives (we Americans

Progressives (we Americans with empathy in our bones) have been shooting ourselves in the policy foot for years. If we can't have the whole pie, we take nothing and complain about the cook. Meanwhile, extreme conservative have been plotting, and winning, for years. They own the airwaves. Isn't it time we stopped the infighting, looked outward, and worked to stop the right wing? Bravo to Lakoff!

...as opposed to abstract I

...as opposed to abstract I found this article to be a solid deconstruction of the Presidents method of communication. Although I felt like he was attempting to reconnect values and Americana in particular ways, this made it very clear. Now perhaps you can explain his affection for the language of war and of offense/protection from those vague "enemies". I think this may be a strategy to keep particular hawk hordes off his back for the time being, but its very disappointing. Thanks to Prof Lakoff.

Harvard political

Harvard political philosopher Michael Sandel explains his mentor, John Rawls' concept of the "veil of ignorance": The hypothetical members of the constitutional convention of a Just Society would create a truly just and EMPATHETIC society if they were blinded of their (and their constituencies) strengths and talents. If unaware of their own attributes, they would design a system of law which protected the rights of the poor and weak since behind their "veil" they could not know what class they might belong to. In our family, the child who partitioned the dessert was given the last opportunity to chose his piece, insuring a fair cutting of the pie and distribution of the sweets. It seems to me that modern ideological republicans and neocons not only "Run with scissors" but also "Fail to play well with others." Empathy IS a value of American democracy.

In defense of my "moderated

In defense of my "moderated out" previous comment. Yes, it was on the long side...but so is this article. This vapid piece of social engineering is brain-numbingly long while saying absolutely nothing besides "Yes, we can" and "God [I mean Obama] moves in mysterious ways."

George, nice analysis as

George, nice analysis as usual! I also heartily agree with anonymous about need to stop using the word "conservatives." In my experience the only thing I've ever been able to figure out that they conserve is their own personal wealth and political advantage. Of course, we should also abandon "liberal" as it too has become disconnected from any meaning and only acts as a sign to facilitate them/us discussion and all too often seeks to curtail personal liberty. I'm all for going with "Americans" and continually referring back to our founding documents. We should start dismantling the laws of the past 30 years that run counter to those constitutional ideals -- starting with the Patriot Act and the Homeland Security Act, and continuing on to the mis-allocation of public goods like radio and television broadcast rights where "freedom" arguments have been used to subsidize monopolies.

I enjoyed the article, and

I enjoyed the article, and agree with a lot of what you are saying. But we need to be cautious of idolizing Obama in the same ways we have demonized Bush -- both are easy to do, but accomplish very little. We must hold Obama to higher standards than we held Bush, lest we letthe war in Afghanistan continue and allow more people to perish.

Ahh! What a joy it is to

Ahh! What a joy it is to witness an intellectually challenging yet lay discussion about semantics! (The other day there was an article about the art of diagramming sentences. Who knows, before long phrases like "dumbing down" may become obsolete in our lexicon.)

Great article. Two

Great article. Two comments: 1. Lakoff needs to address the point that several respondents suggested, namely that Obama's Afghanistan program appears to contradict both his values and the pragmatic likelihood of success for the rest of his program. 2. Lakoff calls for a progressive message machine in the red districts, including think tanks that focus on values and message, but gives no practical advice on how to make that happen. Indeed, his own think tank folded for lack of funding. I run a struggling startup thinktank, Ad Astra Institute of Kansas (www.adastrainstitute.org). Are there any concrete suggestions out there on how to provide stable funding for think tanks like mine in the dreaded red zone?

I fear it is going to take

I fear it is going to take everything he has to overcome Republican dominance in Washington and the power of the RNC's wholly owned subsidiary, the mainstream media. But I think the strategy you spell out, sir, will help him do it. Is there anybody smarter than you? I think not. Well, maybe President Obama. You make it really clear why I'm glad Obama is here to transform my morals and politics. It's a real relief to have a grownup in charge of the country for a change and I'm looking forward to him getting a handle on us through new regulations, particularly in the economy, ecology, healthcare, workplace safety, public safety, and childcare. President Obama is so wonderful and has so much to offer us, that in a lot of ways, I think he's transformative like Jesus, except there's no way that Jesus could look so impossibly cool in an Armani suit puffing on a Newport, plus Jesus never had such a hot wife unless you believe some recent authors.

Some over-analyzing

Some over-analyzing notwithstanding, this is an interesting article. It could use some editing, and its theories are, after all, just theories. Mr. Obama doesn't have a Code, implicit or explicit, but he can think and speak lucidly, and that is enough. To marry that skill to the fellow's personality traits is a fun exercise for Mr. Lakoff, but at best premature and, perhaps, not valid. I do agree with Mr. Lakoff and others here that President Obama is delightfully on track. Let us wish him well in the fray.

Great article... very

Great article... very accurate analysis. Thank you "TruthOut". It is inspiring to read the comments posted here and realize that so many of you have a deep understanding of our problems despite the bias and lack of information in the mainstream media. You people ARE the solution. All the answers can be found in open and intelligent discussion/ debate. The truth will set us all free... no matter how much it hurts (the few).

For those who question

For those who question George Lakoff's ideas on framing and values I suggest his book "don't think of an elephant". It is a small book (primer), 124 pages with a powerful message to Progressives. You won't be sorry for taking the time to read what he has to say. After reading this book, I am very aware of language used both by Conservatives and Progressives. President Obama has quite clearly learned the value of Lakoff's ideas and is using them without you being aware. A MUST read if you are committed to Progressive/American values.

I appreciate Lakoff's

I appreciate Lakoff's analysis and I hope progressives, especially Obama and his staff, read it. But at least part of the analysis seems based on an assumption that I thought had been long-debunked, namely, that the political space has one dimension, from radical conservative to radical liberal. The political space is at least 2-D, and may not even be characterizable by dimensions. For example: Lakoff refers to "hard-core ideological conservatives". There are many kinds of "ideological conservatives", e.g., pure libertarians, fascists (e.g., John Birchers), and right-wing religious fundamentalists. On a practical level, the Republican Party strains in its efforts to be a "big tent" for conservatives: it has become an odd duck with at least four (right) wings: the religious right, the libertarian right, the national security right, and big corporate interests. The national-security and corporate wings control the GOP, but keep the other two wings mollified by throwing them bones now and then. The problem for progressives is that the Democratic Party also has a strong corporate and nat-sec wings. Obama is now the de-facto head of the Democrats. I am waiting to see how (or if) he can wrest control from the corporate and nat-sec wings.

Thank you, Dr. Lakoff, for

Thank you, Dr. Lakoff, for your very insightful comments. As a devotee to your work and a cognitive scientist myself, I have found your books "Don't think of an elepahant," and "Moral Politics: How Conservatives and Liberals Think" to be masterful. This article extends those works to the current time in a very helpful way. Please keep up your outstanding work and keep us progressives informed about things we can do to apply your ideas to the current political process. Jack Williams, Ph.D. State College, PA

An interesting philosophical

An interesting philosophical article, and judging from many of the comments so far, one that invokes a collective sigh of relief among intellectuals after 8 years of The Bumpkin. The problem is that an unspoken code, one that is discerned between the lines, so to speak, does little to communicate to those of us who need more concrete terms in order to understand. This does not mean that Obama should dumb down. But he needn't be pointedly obscure.... and unfortunately as we know from decades of experience, obscurity and obfuscation are close bedfellows when it comes to politics. One thing is clear: Obama is changing his public stance on Afghanistan and Iraq, at least relative to campaign rhetoric. I am sickened to learn he wants to keep 50,000+ so-called peacekeeping troops there long-term, and that he still will not address the issue of the more than 100,000 private contractors there, many of whom are little more than mercenary soldiers.... people whose egos thrive on and love the energy of violence and who usually have far less morality about it than our regular armed forces personnel. Since those private contractors also represent a hefty chunk of defense industry business, aka the Military Industrial Complex that Eisenhower presciently warned us about, one must now wonder whether Obama, our lofty hope of a "Mr. Smith goes to Washington", is just another slick politician who happened to have fabulous marketing on the front end and whose momentum was additionally propelled by a deep disgust for the former president. Very disturbing.

I have been following Lakoff

I have been following Lakoff for some time. I am grateful for the education he has given me on the way things, especially the media & the right wing media, really work. I am so pleased to read his words on what I've been thinking - progressives have GOT to find a way to effectively & constantly counteract the right-wing noise machine - but I must have missed his suggestion in this article on how to do that. His informed opinion on that, & his help, seem critical. I can talk to friends 'til I'm blue in the face using points he's suggested, but that doesn't reach thousands. How is an equally effective progressive noise machine started?? I am sure people would contribute generously to, & rally behind, such an enterprise, if an effective one could be.... invented.

I can't understand why you

I can't understand why you all think the conservative noise machine is more effective than Hollywood and The New York Times et al. Even NPR approaches its reporting from a liberal/progressive starting point ninety five percent of the time - and that's with government funding combined with donations. You should rest comfortably knowing that the liberal/progressive message culture is all pervasive. As for empathy. How kind and caring is it to create dependency? It seems that teaching a man to fish is a much more sustainable and kind approach than to take the fisher's catch and portion it out to otherwise able people. Don't over think this people. There's room for both philosophies in this great nations - unless you're not comfortable with diversity of opinion. If domination is what you seek under the guise of co-opted traditional American values you are on the right track. But don't fool yourself that you have subtlety on your side - President Obama may be silver-tongued, but that doesn't mask the movement. We'll see you in the election booth.

I'm not so sure Hollywood is

I'm not so sure Hollywood is such a liberal haven, for starters... But more importantly, what this article is telling us is that is up to us, WE THE PEOPLE, to organize our ways of thinking and listening. If Obama were to frame his speeches using basically ideological jargon, he wouldn't have made it through the primaries, and this forum would not be happening. Obama uses a tool that the right tends to ignore: the internet. Access to classical media will be difficult at best, unless We the people buy our way in. It is also an error to believe that Obama's objective is to create dependancy: He would be the first to say that there is nothing wrong in teaching someone to fish. However there is a great deal wrong in teaching someone to fish and then denying him access to any body of water where he would be able to fish.. Obama's ideal is to establish collective responsibilty for collective needs. What this article calls for and, by its very existence offers as a starting point, is a way to organize an effective a response to the Limbaugh and Roves, that clearly counters their arguments and reframes the debate. I,n short we need to sieze the meaning and power inherant in words. This iw why i believe in the essential importance of liberal arts in Higher Studies...

I think we need to bring

I think we need to bring back the Fairness Doctrine or something like it. The fight has to be fought where it matters. The Internet is a great democratizing tool, but we need a better presence on radio and network news shows, which I think will only happen if there is legislation that demands it. These are the communication paths that reach large numbers.
