Washington - President Barack Obama challenged the nation's vested interests to a legislative duel Saturday, saying he will fight to change health care, energy and education in dramatic ways that will upset the status quo.

"The system we have now might work for the powerful and well-connected interests that have run Washington for far too long," Obama said in his weekly radio and video address. "But I don't. I work for the American people."

He said his ambitious budget plan, unveiled Thursday, will help millions of Americans, but only if Congress overcomes resistance from deep-pocket lobbies.

"I know these steps won't sit well with the special interests and lobbyists who are invested in the old way of doing business, and I know they're gearing up for a fight," Obama said, using tough-guy language reminiscent of his predecessor, George W. Bush. "My message to them is this: So am I."

Some analysts say Obama's proposals are almost radical. But he said all of them were included in his campaign promises. "It is the change the American people voted for in November," he said.

Nonetheless, he said, well-financed interest groups will fight back furiously.

Insurance companies will dislike having "to bid competitively to continue offering Medicare coverage, but that's how we'll help preserve and protect Medicare and lower health care costs," the president said. "I know that banks and big student lenders won't like the idea that we're ending their huge taxpayer subsidies, but that's how we'll save taxpayers nearly $50 billion and make college more affordable. I know that oil and gas companies won't like us ending nearly $30 billion in tax breaks, but that's how we'll help fund a renewable energy economy."

Passing the budget, even with a Democratic-controlled Congress, "won't be easy," Obama said. "Because it represents real and dramatic change, it also represents a threat to the status quo in Washington."

Congressional Republicans continued to bash Obama's spending proposals and his projection of a $1.75 trillion deficit this year.

Almost every day brings another "multibillion-dollar government spending plan being proposed or even worse, passed," said Sen. Richard Burr, R-N.C., who gave the GOP's weekly address.

He said Obama is pushing "the single largest increase in federal spending in the history of the United States, while driving the deficit to levels that were once thought impossible."

Excellent. Go for it, Prez.

Excellent. Go for it, Prez. And continue to let us have the pleasure of laughing our butts off at the Repubs, who forgot everything they did or enabled in the last eight years, the wholesale rape of the United States and its citizens and the murder overseas. Stick it to the bastards: over half the country's watching your back.

Republicans-as SenBurr-want

Republicans-as SenBurr-want to prevent other good americans from accessing the same employer and benefits they have and enjoy for years on end:for real, if these Republcans were so successful in their total-capitalism-world, they would be well-performing elsewhere and not in the gray halls of government they so abhorr--such stress.Have they not told you the USFederal employee savings program MATCHES EMPLOYEE FUNDS @ 39.9989%. Where else can yoou get a deal like that??? And of course who controlled that decision and vote? Obviously they decided NOT to go to their local BOA and get .35% return on their savings.

Bravo Mr. President.

Bravo Mr. President. Finally someone who talks for the people, not the Korporate Interests who've ruined this country for their own greed at the expense of the Working Classes!

This is the best news I've

This is the best news I've heard since the Vietnam war ended.

Readers, see this as a "call

Readers, see this as a "call to arms"... in order for Obama to achieve these ends he's going to need a huge amount of support pushing Congress to go along, as Congress is beholden to the rich, and not the American people. This isn't a battle between left and right, it is a battle between We the People and the rich that assume they can use their money to influence government to do what they want, or what is referred to as "the status quo". If We the People don't hold up our end of the fight by inundating our representatives directly and indirectly with our desires on the issue, business as usual will continue.

Rep Sen Burr obviously

Rep Sen Burr obviously doesn't count the huge, unnecessary costs of the Iraki adventure in his version of "history". Who does he get financial support from?

From: National Journal

From: National Journal Magazine: As President Obama begins his first term in office, the former candidate who railed against the influence of lobbyists is now employing former lobbyists, some of whom were working on K Street just a few months ago. In November 2007, Obama boasted at a campaign event that lobbyists "won't find a job in my White House." He later softened that rhetoric to say that lobbyists "won't dominate" the White House. National Journal therefore is tracking the number of lobbyists in the executive branch. As of January 21, Obama had nominated two recent lobbyists to high-level administration posts, and 12 of the 112 White House staffers that Obama had named had been registered as lobbyists at some point since 2005. At least a dozen lobbyists worked on Obama's transition team, and at least one member of his national security team was a lobbyist. This trend was worrisome to some watchdog groups until Obama signed an executive order on January 21 setting strict rules on former lobbyists entering his administration and governing what they can do immediately after they leave. "If you are a lobbyist entering my administration, you will not be able to work on matters you lobbied on or in the agencies that you lobbied during the previous two years," Obama said. "When you leave government, you will not be able to lobby my administration for as long as I am president." Obama's move was applauded by Craig Holman, the legislative representative for Public Citizen, who called the executive order "a very strong beginning for ethics reform." Meanwhile, for those on K Street, Obama's willingness to hire lobbyists at all is a vindication of sorts after they had to endure a long election campaign in which they were pummeled over their profession.

So, the republicans aren't

So, the republicans aren't working for the country, they are trying to make it difficult for Obama so THEY can say the democrats can't do anything and THEY'RE party can get back in the White House. I see how it works: If the republicans are in the control, everything they do is for the "good" of the country, but when democrats are in power, the republicans try to undermine them. I hope Obama can do what he says. That will make this country great, instead of a nation run by criminals.

If this is in fact Obama

If this is in fact Obama throwing down the gauntlet, i.e., taking a clear stand and being willing to act upon it,there is now a much more difficult task ahead. That task is for the U.S. people to sort through all their intellectual muddle, the dueling talking heads instilled in our minds by our corporate media over these decades, and the knee-jerk fears of basic concepts like compassion, shared interests, universal coverage, collective action, etc. If you truly believe, it is time to get on board children, children. Mr. Obama and the country need you now (and with a little passion, please, a little anger, a little indignation). Now get to work.

Excellent! It is time to

Excellent! It is time to completely ignore the idle threats of the paper tigers of finance and corruption left by the criminal bush regime. Ultimately I suspect that many of these criminals will have to be totally divested and even imprisoned as they attempt to carry out their agenda of rape and pillage on the honest citizens of America. After all theft and fraud is there ONLY training. However, it is with their own rope that they will hang themselves, and no matter what spin and lies they launch through their crumbling media machine, they will simply be cleaned up as a normal police matter like any other common thieves. No revolution needed, just a gradual and unwavering return to normalcy and American constitutional justice.

Yes sir, go for it, I joing

Yes sir, go for it, I joing the previous writer in sayinig I'm for you and your changes. It is refreshing to see them, after eight years of being run by the military industrial complex. WE still have to repair the damage of those years. I know there was 9-11, but that was a set up.

If there is one matter that

If there is one matter that is clearly visible in all the emails and comments I read, it's the fact that America's GRAMMAR needs a real boost. Hopefully Obama's education reforms will get Americans to spell correctly. Michael S. Cullen Berlin, Germany

The hypocrisy of the

The hypocrisy of the Republicans would be merely pathetic and comical if they were not in a position to do so much harm to the country. The Republicans who whine about Obama's spending had NO problem with Bush's profligate borrow-and-spend binge which turned the budget surpluses that he inherited from Clinton into the hugest deficits in the history of the world, which he passed on to Obama. And while the Republicans piss and moan about a $800 billion stimulus, to help ordinary working Americans, they have no problem voting for over $600 BILLION PER YEAR for the military, most of which goes to enrich their ultra-rich corporate cronies and financial backers in the military-industrial-petroleum complex. The fact is that the core value of Republicans is to use the power of the federal government for corrupt purposes of private financial gain for themselves and their backers at the expense of the American people -- and they regard clean, open transparent government in the public interest as "radical".

If Mr. Obama's policy agenda

If Mr. Obama's policy agenda morphs into a genuine pitched battle between a President fighting on behalf of the majority of citizens and the kleptocrats who have had essentially free reign for most of U.S. history, then this is a historic moment in more ways than one. Time will tell, however, whether Obama's intent is genuine. I'm not yet convinced, but I am hopeful for the first time in many years.

We want and need change.

We want and need change. Look at the interest rates on credit cards as but one example of lobbyists and their negative impact on Americans everywhere (the banks borrow money at ZERO and loan it at 29%???). How about the costs of healthcare and medicines? The Industry spends more on advertising to consumers than on research. Any clue as to why?: Profits and Margins. Not costs.

Whew! I'm glad Jesse

Whew! I'm glad Jesse Jackson didn't carry through on his idiotic whispered remark about Obama that he wanted to "cut his n*ts off". This amazing president is now really using those things!! Way to go, Mr. President!!

It is going to be difficult

It is going to be difficult to reform the status quo because it is strongly entrenched, but this is GREAT news. It is time for "our" representatives to actually start representing the people who pay their salaries (and I do NOT mean the lobbyists that contribute to them in order to buy influence). We need to help President Obama with this fight because it will be a fight. These special interests are not going to change just because they should, we are going to have to force these changes through Congress. It is time!

All lobbies?

All lobbies?

I support the concepts

I support the concepts absolutely. The devil is in the details. 1. Afghanistan plans are very troubling but will please the weapons makers and the coffin makers. 2.I wonder if he will address the pathetic failure to provide early childhood education and quality care to our youngest children. 3. He should do all that before he goes after the K-12 public schools. All things considered(lack of preschool, poor funding, lack of other child services),the K-12 system is already doing a good job.

Thank God! It's about time

Thank God! It's about time we had someone with clout and guts stepping up to the plate in our behalf. I wonder how the peevish, doggedly-obstructive Republicans will fare with revising their image as they impede progress on initiatives such as these. Let's hope that the American people will understand that the president's proposals will not be happening overnight, in any case. It will be a protracted convalescence from the illness that has plagued us for eight years. It will take more than a single shot in the arm to effect recovery.

I just hope he doesn't get

I just hope he doesn't get his brains blown out like our heroes of the 60's did. JFK, MLK, and RFK, who stood for the same exact principles.

Let's not forget it was the

Let's not forget it was the Republicans who made all of this possible. I want to thank you all for your wonderful night shade contributions. But now the Sun is rising. Good morning America!

Please REMEMBER!

Please REMEMBER! Republicans who were supposed to represent the flag and the Republic for which it stands have not done so in the least. They have represented Anti-Constitutional elements willing to undo the Constitution at the expense of Citizens and their Rights. They sponsored War Crimes for profit. They may feel some heat now but they are only barely constrained. It is up to Citizens to insist that Rule of Law anchored in Constitutional bedrock prevails by holding Bush Administration seditionists (ie the Bush Cabinet and their backers) accountable. Prosecutions must be insisted upon. Follow the money.

I LOVE THE WORD

I LOVE THE WORD "KLEPTOCRATS"! Thank you. I'm going to use that if it's ok. Just remember, when repugs say he's doing too much too fast and without enough of a mandate, we can remind them of the past few decades. How much of a mandate did bush jr. have, EVER? He acted like he had one and, let's face it, got a lot done. Too bad it was all evil and favored the KLEPTOCRATS. If all President Obama managed to accomplish was UNdoing jr.'s legacy, he'd still have to get a lot done. It's going to take decades of a sustained aggressive effort on our part to actually get this country back on track. Universal healthcare and making good on the (still unkept) promise to actually stop torturing people are just scratching the surface. I'm still reeling from the "contract on america", iran-contra, the political assassinations of Presidents Carter and Clinton, voodoo-economics and the 40-year-old nixon playbook. The American people have already waited too long for action and are ready for the coming fight.

This is the first time I

This is the first time I have seen any president openly challenge the lobbyists. Frankly, lobbying should be outlawed, since it is nothing but bribery anyway. Bravo President Obama!

I have a suggestion for

I have a suggestion for Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh, John Boehener and the rest of their treasonous ilk-- love it or leave it. Preferably, leave it. Go live in some fascist enclave overseas and leave us patriotic Americans to get on with SUPPORTING OUT PRESIDENT!

One lobby Obama does not

One lobby Obama does not have to tell to, "Bring it on", is AIPAC. They had " brought it on" and got it on before he was ever allowed to become a serious candidate. Remember his acceptance speech; His pilgrimage to AIPAC the day after; His slate of Clinton and Bush retreads; His failure to utter a word as the slaughter in Gaza was in progress..? There remains one slim thread: His appointment of amiable George Mitchel to try to resuscitate the moribund "peace process". A thread made all the more slim by the ascendancy of ultra rightist Natanyahoo and the continued absence of serious resolve to stop cow-towing to AIPAC by American politicians. Over the last 60 years, this has fed the Israeli/Palestinian conflict, and by extension, the larger Islamic extremism.

President Obama, you are

President Obama, you are music to my ears! I have waited so long to hear words like this. When our system gives us charge card companies (banks) who can charge usurious rates and when congress hasn't passed a common sense gun control law, you know who is to blame. Congress is bought and paid for -- nothing but bribery is responsible for these poor decisions. Fight the good fight and we will fight with you!

Way to go Obama! Go for it!

Way to go Obama! Go for it! Stick it to the lobbyists and the Republicans that used the last eight years to put America in the toilet, approved torture to prisoners, raped the economy, and all the while padding their GOP bank accounts!

I have used the term

I have used the term kleptocrat here before, but in the interests of equal opportunity, I guess kleptocans ought to be there also, to make clear that there are two somewhat distinct species of klepto-public servants (They seem to think of themselves as servants, to assuage their guilt over how much they cost working stiffs. ) I wish to add my disapproval of the unseemly influence of AIPAC. If my own circle of friends is any indication, AIPAC does not represent Jewish-American people in general, who are often more horrified by AIPAC's behavior than people not paying attention, as good cops would be horrified by the behaviors of rogues.

All of you that slam the

All of you that slam the Republicans are falling into the divisive tactics of the corporate talking heads. Remember Obama's words: Passing the budget, even with a Democratic-controlled Congress, "won't be easy," Obama said. "Because it represents real and dramatic change, it also represents a threat to the status quo in Washington." Get out of the cheap seats and get involved. If you approve of this direction, WRITE TO YOUR REPRESENTATIVES! Dem or Rep, let them know what you think. Use pen and paper and mail it with stamps (look it up, they exist).

One small problem. Governor

One small problem. Governor Tom Vilsak was a Monsanto lobbyist.. If you look around quite a few of his cabinet members are corporate shills..

"The system we have now

"The system we have now might work for the powerful and well-connected interests that have run Washington for far too long," Obama said in his weekly radio and video address. "But I don't. I work for the American people." Does this include the stark raving fact that Media in America is almost exclusively owned and operated by just 6-7 Giant Corporations who decide what is news, what tone it is delivered, how its delivery is framed and edited, who gets to speak...? There is no FAIRNESS DOCTRINE in Media and so, we have thousands of Rightwing Radio Stations, Limbaugh, Fox News, etc, etc... All of whom can say whatever they want 24/7 without any debate or presenting any alternative point of view.... Is this a healthy situation for any 'Free Nation?... any Democracy..?...I think Right or Left, All political speech must include a large degree of true debate and discourse. Media must present other points of view....... BRING BACK THE FAIRNESS DOCTRINE.... BREAK UP THE MONOPOLY STRANGLEHOLD CORPORATIONS HAVE ON AMERICA'S MEDIA. Free Speech is a Constitutional Right. There is no RIGHT that Gives Corporations, individuals, whatever, the right to own all the media in America so that only their Free Speech can be heard... President Obama--- PLEASE take on this Special Interest. The situation I describe is a NATIONAL DISASTER...

I agree with Joe Peters

I agree with Joe Peters 14:03... Fellow Citizens--- get out of the cheap seats like Joe says and get involved. Write, call, email your Representatives, Obama, ALL of Congress, Media outlets... Put yourselves out there and in their face and ears. If you are not using the leverage of your vote on elected officials, then all they have are lobbyist in their face with money to listen to... Sure its like tossing straws at a camel, but it might very well be your straw among many others that adds enough weight to break the camel's back and tilt the Congressman and/or Senator towards your interest on an issue... DEMOCRACY--- USE IT OR LOSE IT..!... I assure you that ''the other side'' is busy, organized and using the system for all its worth while many Americans sit on the couch complaining to the TV...

Psychological Warfare

Psychological Warfare propaganda has been inflicted upon us since the misnamed Patriot Act obliterated the laws that had protected the public. Babington’s article begins to reveal the true problem: Can our democratic Constitutional government prevail over corporate Oligarchy? War is profitable to the powerful, Arms manufacturers and oil “pushers” who also aim at the exploitation of public resources. For all intents and purposes, the Congress virtually collapsed under Bush, unable to defend Citizen’s rights or Constitutional principles. Oligarchy nearly destroyed the Constitution and Rule of Law by eroding Due Process mandates, and uniform standards of proof. With the elimination of habeas corpus and the promulgation of torture, we have good cause to be alarmed. Yet, I believe that a new and deeper expression of citizenship is emerging. There seems to be a broader perspective in the public that we have an obligation to closely question authority and press those in power for accountability. Secrecy, after all, is inherently undemocratic. Government has an obligation to be transparent and adhere to Law that protects citizen's rights and the common good. This is vastly different from the Right Wing fomenting fear while profiting from reckless exaggeration of a foreign threat. The three branches of government were intended to be in balance. We need to remind each other of that. To keep them balanced, we all need to insist that the media and religions never again become arms of State. War Crimes were the result. If you don’t fear that this can infect our community, think of Blackwater crimes and “Homeland Security” malfeasance after Hurricane Katrina. Therefore, prosecutions of the Bush Cabinet are an urgently necessity. Democrats versus Republicans do not define the real issue. The real distinction to be made should be between Constitutional and anti-Constitutionalists “Representatives”. Will we have democracy or tyranny?

I will support President

I will support President Obama completely, even when individual programs are not what I want. The country is turning around and I am thrilled (yes, thrilled) that we finally have a smart president who is leading the country out of our financial problems and into a world of energy independence.

God has blessed America and

God has blessed America and my heart swells with pride over our wonderful president. I could go on about my fears and dread that all of these wonderful possibilities could end in a flash, but I won't let myself go there. I can hardly wait to see the headlines:PRESIDENT OBAMA WINS RE-ELECTION 2012 WITH A HUGE MAJORITY!!!! Let us all project that thought and that outcome. It makes me fee better.

I know that's why I voted

I know that's why I voted for you, President Obama. We need dramatic change. I gladly pay taxes when I know those funds are used to build our nation (and others) up, rather than tear other nations down. The fact is, necessities come with a price. We can either pay the prices of private companies for those necessities, prices that are based on profit goals, or pay taxes to ensure we have them. At least when we pay taxes, We the People, the ultimate power of the government, has a collective choice. Neither pure capitalism nor pure socialism works, and the United States economic system is a mix of both. I trust Obama's administration shall make it a healthy mix once again...tell your congressional representatives to support legislation for increased funding for education and health care - the cornerstones of every society.

well done mr.president!maybe

well done mr.president!maybe is still time to save american democracy and freedom from bush's act and presidential mistakes,...go on and thank you alot
