Leading Climate Scientist: "Democratic Process Isn't Working"

Protest and direct action could be the only way to tackle soaring carbon emissions, a leading climate scientist has said.

James Hansen, a climate modeler with NASA, told the Guardian today that corporate lobbying has undermined democratic attempts to curb carbon pollution. "The democratic process doesn't quite seem to be working," he said.

Speaking on the eve of joining a protest against the headquarters of power firm E.ON in Coventry, Hansen said: "The first action that people should take is to use the democratic process. What is frustrating people, me included, is that democratic action affects elections but what we get then from political leaders is greenwash.

"The democratic process is supposed to be one person one vote, but it turns out that money is talking louder than the votes. So, I'm not surprised that people are getting frustrated. I think that peaceful demonstration is not out of order, because we're running out of time."

Hansen said he was taking part in the Coventry demonstration tomorrow because he wants a worldwide moratorium on new coal power stations. E.ON wants to build such a station at Kingsnorth in Kent, an application that energy and the climate change minister Ed Miliband recently delayed. "I think that peaceful actions that attempt to draw society's attention to the issue are not inappropriate," Hansen said.

He added that a scientific meeting in Copenhagen last week had made clear the "urgency of the science and the inaction taken by governments".

Officials will gather in Bonn later this month to continue talks on a new global climate treaty, which campaigners have called to be signed at a UN meeting in Copenhagen in December. Hansen warned that the new treaty is "guaranteed to fail" to bring down emissions.

Hansen said: "What's being talked about for Copenhagen is a strengthening of Kyoto [protocol] approach, a cap and trade with offsets and escape hatches which will be gauranteed to fail in terms of getting the required rapid reduction in emissions. They talk about goals which sound impressive, but when you see the actions are such that it will be impossible to reach those goals, then I can understand the informed public getting frustrated."

He said he was growing "concerned" over the stance taken by the new US administration on global warming. "It's not clear what their intentions are yet, but if they are going to support cap and trade then unfortunately I think that will be another case of greenwash. It's going to take stronger action than that."

The Big Lie technique

The Big Lie technique requires turning truth upside down and that's just what Hansen does. The money is all on the Warmist side, starting with the $250,000 Hansen got as a prize from Teresa Heinz Kerry's Heinz Family Foundation in 1992. How about the $300Million Gore announced he would spend on PR and advertising? The rest of the Solar System warmed when Earth did and it is cooling as Earth cools...all the rest is balderdash.

At least one scientist has

At least one scientist has declared that we have reached the tipping point on global warming and "we are looking down into vast chasms of unknowns." We have known about global warming since the sixties. Those that own the means of production have for their own greed, chosen to ignore a probable catastrophe. We may not be able to stop the rapid heating of the Earth, even if we immediately stopped pumping carbon into the atmosphere. At this point, only natural forces like volcanos may be able to cool the Earth.

I don't think the American

I don't think the American people are concerned about global warming, and won't be until they experience it, feel it, see it. They are not going to rise up and demand a reduction in carbon emissions. It's just such a boring aspiration, producing yawns, not cheers. A better way to generate enthusiasm would be to implement an aggressive plan to develop alternative energy, that would be cleaner, ultimately cheaper, and provide the source for electrically powered vehicles, which are much more efficient than gasoline vehicles, much simpler, and easier to drive. And sleeker and faster. Unfortunately, the same problems arise at the political end - the vested special interests simply won't allow this to happen. And the Obama window, anyway, is not going to last very long, judging by a recent poll. The Republicans have already pulled even with the Democrats for 2010. That means the end of the modern "progressive" era in America. Republicans believe in drilling and don't believe in global warming.

Back in the 1950'5 or early

Back in the 1950'5 or early 1960's their mantra was " Global Cooling " now the Al Gores of the world and his Socialist / Marxist associates are ranting and raving about " Global Warming " Make up your minds . Normally here in Florida it cools off from about mid December until the end of January or the latest the 2 nd week of February. This year , had to turn the heat on evenings thru the 1 st week of March . For thousands of years the climate runs in cycles . Heard they changed the term from "Global Warming" to " Global Change "because the weather was not cooperating with their terminology . By the way , Senator Al Gore SR. [ Al Gores father] major benefactor was Armand Hammer a.k.a. Heimer was a Communist whose father Dr. Julius Heimer a.k.a. Hammer was the founder of the American Communist Party. The fruit does not fall far from the tree . They were long term friends and obviously had a meeting of the minds.

As long as China is building

As long as China is building one coal fired power plant a week and India is following fast, most of the efforts in the West are just not very efficient. Ultimately, and this means in a relatively short time, we will be running out of all fossil fuels. The discussion should merge those too aspects. It is just totally irresponsible to have little fossil fuels left in 100 years. Cap and trade is a very responsible policy to shift priorities. The entire energy supply system needs to be totally revamped. It will not happen from one month to the next but the process needs to get started as soon as possible, meaning yesterday! Some of the new technologies are just becoming available or will be soon. Within one year superconductive wind turbines and generators will make wind power the cheapest energy source in general. Within the next 2-3 years and definitely before the end of President Obama's first term there will be a huge boom in alternative energy in the US. This will signal to the world a new leadership, that's committed to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

"The democratic process

"The democratic process doesn't quite seem to be working," he said?? How can it work when governing has long since stopped being democratic? We elect them and kick them out, yet more corrupt politicians line up for the next election, only to govern for themselves, seldom for those who elected them.

Big Lies? Look who's paying

Big Lies? Look who's paying for them. Hansen and others are facing a lot of headwind from the deniers, who are getting bankrolled by guess who? Big Coal, Big Chemical, Big Business. Readers can get an idea from a blog appearing March 18th: Elizabeth Kolbert: 'Donating to the Deniers.'
