Appomattox Again

"Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul."

- Timothy McVeigh quoting from "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley

April 9 was a Sunday in 1865, and in the town of Appomattox, Virginia, the sun was shining down on the end of a war. Confederate forces, led by Gen. Robert E. Lee, had finally been brought to bay by Gen. Ulysses Grant after four grueling, blood-sodden years. Lee's surrender at Appomattox was the conclusion of the largest and deadliest armed insurrection in American history.

April 9 was a Thursday in 2009, and there are some lo these 144 years later who would very much like to see another armed insurrection erupt within these United States. The casus belli for today's would-be revolutionaries is not states' rights, slavery or economic independence, but is instead a toxic mix of fundamentalist Christianity, ultra-conservative orthodoxy and, more than anything else, guns.

The existence of armed and angry insurrectionists in America is nothing new. As Robert Kennedy once observed, "One-fifth of the people are against everything all the time." The militia movement, in one form or another, has been a part of our history literally since the founding of the nation itself, and memories of Waco, Ruby Ridge and the bombing of the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City remain acutely fresh in mind even years later.

Lately, the news has been flooded with reports of citizens arming themselves to the teeth, egged on by right-wing media personalities prophesying doom, the rise of socialism, and that a Marxist dictator now sits in the Oval Office. This frenzy has been spilling from talk radio and television out into the streets for weeks now, and has recently metastasized into acts of outrageous violence. It smells like a new beginning of something this nation has not been forced to endure for nearly a decade.

Last Monday, a man named Richard Poplawski ambushed and murdered three Pittsburgh police officers and tried to kill nine others. Poplawski's motivations, according to friends and family, centered around his belief in the existence of a vast government conspiracy to destroy American freedoms while establishing a left-wing dictatorship under President Obama. Poplawski came to believe all this after listening to and reading the paranoid rantings of right-wing luminaries like Alex Jones, Glenn Beck, Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity.

Last July, a man named Jim Adkisson walked into a Universalist church in Knoxville and began blazing away with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing two people and wounding several others. He had 70 shotgun shells with him, and fully intended to massacre as many people in the church as possible before police killed him, but he was tackled and disarmed by members of the congregation before he could complete his task.

Eric Boehlert, writing for Media Matters on April 7, said, "When investigators went to Adkisson's home in search of a motive, as well as evidence for the pending trial, they found copies of Savage's 'Liberalism Is a Mental Disorder,' 'Let Freedom Ring' by Sean Hannity, and 'The O'Reilly Factor,' by Fox News's Bill O'Reilly. They also came across what was supposed to have been Adkisson's suicide note: a handwritten, four-page manifesto explaining his murderous actions. The one-word answer for his deed? Hate. The three-word answer? He hated liberals."

"The only way we can rid ourselves of this evil," wrote Adkisson, "is kill them in the streets. Kill them where they gather. I'd like to encourage other like minded people to do what I've done. If life aint worth living anymore don't just Kill yourself. Do something for your Country before you go. Go Kill Liberals!"

Describing the Pittsburgh incident, Boehlert wrote, "In the wake of the bloodbath, we learned that Poplawski was something of a conspiracy nut who embraced dark, radical rhetoric about America. He was convinced the government wanted to take away his guns, the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette reported. Specifically, Poplawski, as one friend described it, feared 'the Obama gun ban that's on the way' and 'didn't like our rights being infringed upon.' (FYI, there is no Obama gun ban in the works.) The same friend said the shooter feared America was 'going to see the end of our times.'"

"Hysterical warnings of government gun grabs and a socialist takeover of the US are no longer the sole proprietary interest of fringe players like Jones," wrote Max Blumenthal on Wednesday. "In the Obama era, Jones's conspiracy theories have graduated to primetime on Fox News. And radicals like Poplawski are tuning in. Indeed, according to the Anti-Defamation League, the alleged killer posted a YouTube clip to (neo-Nazi web site) Stormfront of top-rated Fox News host Glenn Beck contemplating the existence of FEMA-managed concentration camps. ('He backed out,' Poplawski wrote cryptically beside the video.) Three weeks later, Poplawski posted another YouTube clip to Stormfront, this time of a video blogger advocating 'Tea Parties,' or grassroots conservative protests organized by Beck and Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich against President Barack Obama's bailout plan."

There have been more stories like this in recent months, and if history is any guide, there will be more to come. The timing of all this is deeply troubling, and the media players involved are all too familiar. There is something sinister at work here, something malevolent, something sly.

Consider the curious historical synchronicity of all this: after the inauguration of a new Democratic president, there has been a sudden upsurge of right-wing polemicists agitating right-wing citizens into right-wing-motivated acts of violence. The last time things came together like this was back in 1993, after the Waco and Ruby Ridge debacles, combined with the passage of NAFTA and the Brady Bill, detonated into a militia movement that was wildly active, and exceedingly violent, throughout the entirety of President Bill Clinton's two terms.

Dozens of militia-related incidents, including the Oklahoma City bombing, took place during those years. In 2001, however, these incidents stopped almost completely, and for the entirety of George W. Bush's two terms as president, hardly a peep was heard from the militia movement that had been so robustly vigorous during the administration of Bush's predecessor.

A Democratic president takes office in 1993 and the militia movement explodes, egged on by a whole host of right-wing media voices.

A Republican president takes office in 2001 and the militia movement, along with those media voices who sponsored it, all but disappear from the American political landscape.

A Democratic president takes office in 2009, and once again, right-wing media voices begin their clarion call for armed revolution, and once again, a portion of their listeners erupt into violence.

"In Politics," President Franklin Roosevelt once said, "nothing happens by accident. If it happens, you can bet it was planned that way."

    Indeed.

I find I always enjoy Mr.

I find I always enjoy Mr. Pitt's articles, but this time he's outdone himself by a wide margin. An excellent story that leaves us with much to ponder!

The lead stanza was only

The lead stanza was only quoted by McVeigh, it is from the poem "Invictus" by William Ernest Henley. My wretched boor 9th grade english teacher made the class memorize it.

That is an excellent article

That is an excellent article but I need to point out a few things: Glenn Beck is the tamest of the faux conservative media pundits... but Alex Jones (who calls for peaceful behavior, free speech, following The Constitution/Bill Of Rights etc. and the right to self-protection) should not be compared to him or any of the others, the most twisted being Limbaugh. Beck is a bait and switch type , acting patriotic and when he mentions the well documented FEMA camps he proclaims them a conspiracy without even investigating. I've listen to Alex Jones (3 years), read Truthout(4 years), listen to Democracy Now(12 years), and some corporate media(way too long) for balance. Jones has done a good job at tracking both parties and showing how neither one can keep a campaign promise. Hmmm seems we're in perpetual occupation in Iraq (the withdrawal timetable keeps changing), ramping up in Afghanistan and now Pakistan. If you add it all up on a piece of paper and include the current administration's involvement in the wallstreet fiasco, infestation of lobbyists (Obama broke his campaign promise not to hire them... that's all there is now almost!?) and Goldman Sachs veterans in office... it looks worse as it goes along. The left/right paradigm is a worn out concept, pitting people against each other... lets move forward. Regards, Anonymous

Interesting ... I researched

Interesting ... I researched a few things and it turns out that Obama and his current AG actually have made many statements about gun grabbing. I'm not a gun owner, but I completely understand both arguments and while less violence would be a wonderful thing, I just can't see myself trusting the government with yet even more power to do as it pleases. I voted for Obama and he has broken his most important campaign promises like the war, domestic spying, etc and some want to give him a pass and call it "rhetoric" ... I see it as something else. You lied to get my vote and now insult me on top of it all.

Yes,we are left with much to

Yes,we are left with much to ponder about this article, a morsel of the increasing violent outbursts in the United States. What drives people in the U.S. to think of this country as the "land of the free," yet a few of those same people consider others that express an opposing view as nothing but a dispensable waste worthy of nothing more than a bullet in the face? This is not a "liberal" or "conservative" problem. This is a problem for everyone. Killing a person for their political views is one of the greatest threats to democracy. The U.S. has not seen this threat on the same scale as many nations, but the United States is still a young nation compared to most. I think many of us in the U.S. have faced some degree of political discrimination (hopefully not violent) as the United States has become viciously divided by the line of "liberal" versus "conservative" during the twentieth century. We must remember most people are not too different from others: we as human beings wish for success for ourselves and others, but how to achieve that success through our government policies is where many of us disagree. The idea of being militant to force one's ideas upon others is not democratic, but fascist and dictatorial.

I found out about Alex Jones

I found out about Alex Jones during the Bush years. He wasn't silent about Bush and neo conservative voices that were moving toward fascism. He, unlike the Fox gang, is wary of both parties' tendencies toward a police state.

For some really useful

For some really useful insight into the hard-core anti-socialist, anti-intellectual crowd, read Deer Hunting with Jesus by Joe Bageant.

Mr. Pitt: How many of the

Mr. Pitt: How many of the shootings that you reference were mind control operations specifically designed to support the thesis that you propose? I believe if took the time to get to know the people who are buying guns and ammunition and why, you would find a deeper story than the stereotypes and media references you describe. Best regards, Catherine

Will, thank you, once again,

Will, thank you, once again, for writing from clarity. I believe (lucidly) that the right wing is trying to incite an assassination of the President. This, to me, is no different than yelling "fire" in a movie house, and should not be protected by the freedom of speech amendment. The FBI should be cracking down on these Republicans.

Here in Klamath Falls, a

Here in Klamath Falls, a very red part of Oregon, I went into a discount department store that has rifles in the Sporting Goods area...to inquire about price and availability of a "breakdown" 22 rifle, a purchase I've been considering for a while to carry when in remote areas where I might need it for protection or food. So, the clerk asks me if I want to be "on the waiting list"...to which I replied, surprised, "Waiting list???". He said "Yes. It's up to 4 pages now", and seeing my uncomprehending expression, he explained, with a wry smile "They're stocking up for the revolution". Yep, I know where "they" are getting their info.

I wish Mr. Pitts would write

I wish Mr. Pitts would write about the law that makes it illegal to incite violent revolution. These incendiary right-wing radio show hosts seem to be inciting violence. Isn't that illegal? And, if so, why aren't they arrested?

I don't see Alex Jones as a

I don't see Alex Jones as a right winger or a nut I'll admit he thinks a lot of himself but on the subject of the government he realizes they both Re-thug and Demmi-crock are only looking for the brass ring of POWER we need statesmen and the Emperors of our parties have no clothes

All of this goes back to

All of this goes back to Limbaugh and the others being given a pass long ago. Their programming is just a way around campaign contribution limitations, unlimited bloviating against "liberals" and their influence is backed by powerful corporations that pay for this. It's called "advertising". Sure it's out of hand, but they should now be held accountable for their inciting of violence right on the public airways. Where is the FCC - they were quick enough to notice Janet Jackson's breast!

Pitt verifies what I've

Pitt verifies what I've seen in some of my family members and in the caustic media barons he points out -- an unreasoning, nonsensical, wildly paranoid view of our current national situation. They forget that the last eight years of presidential and legislative dominance drove our economy and world standing off a cliff. They had no objections to Bush's 4-fold increase in the national debt, or suppression of our constitutional freedoms, or illegal intervention in other nations' affairs. Even before Obama was sworn in, they began their rants about socialism, gun seizure, deficit spending, and government regulation of business. Bush drove the nation into the ditch, and now his sycophants complain about the size of the tow truck it will take to get us going again. On top of that, they advocate guns for everyone, blocking change any way possible, and violence and intimidation. I am praying that somehow they'll see the evil in their approach and join peacefully in reforming our society and living up to our ideals. Otherwise their twisted take on the world is a cancer eating at civilization, and hastening the possibility of our doom.

Now I see what Rove has been

Now I see what Rove has been up to since he left the White House. That man is evil personified.

Mr. Pitt is right! Also Alex

Mr. Pitt is right! Also Alex Jones is a self described paleo-conservative. A republican, he ran for office and lost to a democrat. He also supports and is supported by Lyndon LaRouche, the king of the conspiracy theorists. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alex_Jones_(radio_host) Also you might take this into consideration: "The AFP has become so associated with the Alex Joneses of the world that other conspiracy theory organizations, mostly members of the 9/11 Truth Movement grasping at credibility, have disowned it." http://www.americanchronicle.com/articles/view/38058

Yes, there's much to ponder

Yes, there's much to ponder here. But the basics are glaring. One being the obvious battle for the scepter between the two parties. The same scepter George Washington laid down. Both parties are constitutional outlaws. There are no candidates that can stand against the puppet masters, only the people can do this. But the masters filled the galleries hands with too many toys. So now we can no longer applaud a good show.

Lumping Alex Jones in with

Lumping Alex Jones in with those others is unfair. I don't agree with everything he says [religious leanings in particular] but he properly rejects the official 9/11 story, as any sane human should and he properly rejects the Democratic leadership along with the Republican Leadership which are essentially two sides of the same neo-fascist coin. The world is mostly controlled by international banking cartels, the u.s. congress works for them, whether they know it or not. "Permit me to issue and control the money of a nation, and I care not who makes its laws." -Amschel Mayer Rothschild One doesn't have to be anti-semetic to see that certain groups of Israelis and their supporters are up to something that most people would find corrupt.

This is what you get when

This is what you get when you have no FAIRNESS DOCTRINE iN MEDIA which compels Media owners to give equal time to opposing political points of view.... and.... when you allow Presidents and Congresses to spend 3 decades COMPLETELY DEREGULATING MEDIA OWNERSHIP RULES so as to allow a few Corporations and/or Media Moguls to OWN ALMOST ALL THE MEDIA IN AMERICA... In the end, what do we have..?--- WE have a few Corporations and Media Moguls deciding everyday what Americans and the much of the world see, read and hear as News, Information and Reflections of Basic Reality...... This IS a National Tragedy you will not hear discussed because--- ITS NOT IN THE INTEREST OF THE FEW CORPORATIONS WHO OWN AND OPERATE ALMOST ALL MEDIA IN AMERICA TO HAVE SUCH A NATIONAL DEBATE....

I find it somewhat amusing

I find it somewhat amusing that the new president's intitials are BO...and, appropriately enough, his new administration sure stinks to high heaven. With many promises already broken and the MSM not questioning him any better than they did the last brigand, the citizenry can't even think about catching breath and resting. I'm afraid it's going to be another very long four years. And the rightwing-nuts aren't going to make it any easier. As for Alex Jones, he may have his heart in the right place but I wonder where he keeps his head?

Excellent article. America's

Excellent article. America's AM hate radio pundits should all take note.

Justice, peace, and

Justice, peace, and prosperity in America? Constitutional democracy with a wise and good president elected by the people? O dear, this is a prospect that must terrify the right wingers to their very souls. Will they ever admit the truth, that they despise America and will say and do anything to hurt her?

A excellent piece, but you

A excellent piece, but you could have left out the shibboleth of the Civil War. That was legitimate state governments trying to leave the USA, as they saw by the interpretation of the Constitution at the time. Yes they owned slaves, but so did the revolutionary American colonies [Quaker Ben Franklin owned slaves], and their bid for freedom from Britain was not based on a desire to perpetuate slavery, it was a desire for independence. The people in the south were not insane conspiracy-driven nuts, and 2/3 did not even own slaves. The government needs to do something about this seditious incitement before something truly terrible happens in this country. Treason used to be a crime. We need to remember that.

It's all a side show.

It's all a side show. Instead of watching it, watch the money. The financial elites who run the media are encouraging us, the people, to divide ourselves and to be distracted from what they've done and are doing. Neither the gun-toters nor the liberals are the enemies of the people. The gun-toters just want to be left alone, to enjoy their fantasies of self-sufficiency. The liberals want to be helpful, to enjoy their fantasies of leaving a better world behind. Neither of these groups is robbing us all by opening their own private taps into the nation's financial aorta. The financial elites are the ones who are doing that, while nobody enforces the laws that their regulators have broken and continue to break. The media don't report this. If you're wondering why not, you haven't been paying attention.

Catherine has it

Catherine has it right. Ya'll need to go back and read "The Search for the Manchurian Candidate" by John Marks, without which you can't understand the last 50 years in America. It will tell you why certain people got assassinated and why they 'committed suicide'. From MK/ULTRA to Iris Chang to the latest wingnut massacre, it's a straight line.

As someone coming from a

As someone coming from a left orientation, I can't ignore the dishonesty which often seems to come from the so-called "progressive" community as well as from the right. William Rivers Pitt should recheck his sources and "facts" before adding to what appears to be a smear campaign against Alex Jones. Having listened to Jones' broadcasts for several years, now, I know that these talking points making the rounds are pure fabrication and mischaracterization. Raw Story and Daily Kos had the decency to recheck and retract similar posts. Alex Jones' is not a promoter in any way of racism or violence. It has been established that the views purportedly espoused by Poplawski are diametrically opposed to the views of Alex Jones. Jones is a frequent and intense critic of Glen Beck, Sean Hannity, Bill O'Reilly, and the rest of that group. This article is a discredit to what should be progressive standards.

Follow the money and you

Follow the money and you will know the truth. Years ago, mass media news abandoned it’s charge as the Watchdog of the People in favor of entertaining the people and raking in those advertising bucks. The Right Wing talk show hosts are merely doing that which they get paid millions while their owners rake in billions. They prey on the visceral reactions of liberals and conservatives and everyone in between, while insulting our intelligence and dumbing down our emotions to the point of inciting murder. As long as Americans keep fighting each other, our world will continue to be controlled and owned by the elite few who NEVER want everyday people to understand who, what, where, when or how. Divided we fail. Divided we fall.

McVeigh didn't blow up the

McVeigh didn't blow up the federal building in Oklahoma city - Unless he managed to get in teher without anyone seeing him, to plant the bombs INSIDE the building. Repeating the government's cock and bull story demonstrates a complete lack of interest in reality.

As a footnote to the

As a footnote to the article, it might be of interest for readers to Google "Stockton CA" where the city, hard hit by cash deficits is cutting back on police personnel and services. And, the citizenry is developing a private ARMED militia to patrol the streets. . .and, also plans to bill the city at the rate of $300 per "man/hour!" The idea of untrained armed men operating in such a fashion scares the living daylights out of me! How about you????

McVeigh was a fall guy.

McVeigh was a fall guy. Oklahoma City, was an inside job to make the electorate fearful enough to accept repressive laws. In its wake we got hit with the 1996 Anti-Terrorism and Effective Death Penalty Act, the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act, and the Prison Litigation Reform Act. The sheep didn't look up. Then came 9/11 and the Patriot [sic] and Military Commissions Acts. The sheep still won't look up. If Hitler came back to life today and looked at the USA, he'd probably think he won. The USA is becoming the Fourth Reich.

The Democrats and Obama

The Democrats and Obama should come out and expose FOX News for what they are. Liars first and foremost. If I was Obama I would use the bully pulpit, use their name and quote them and lambaste them at every opportunity. To not answer their inciting murderous violence by broadcasting lies and hate is to enable them and their unstable radical followers.

Wherever there is conflict

Wherever there is conflict there is inevitably a 3rd side that is benefiting from it. Today we see a rise in the left hating right and yet it is the neutral banksters that are robbing the wealth of this county to an unprecedented degree with, sadly, almost no one even raising the question of fraud.

And the Hegelian War dance

And the Hegelian War dance just goes on and on. Mr. Pitt is wrong in grouping Jones with the rest of the overpaid tools at Faux News. In the bigger picture those clowns are partly correct for sounding the alarm over the programs foisted upon us. Only the brand of Socialism/Fascism changes from one administration to the next. The talking heads feverish fanning of the fires of a wouldd be "revolution" play directly into the hands of The New World Order missionaries for whom they ultimately work. In order to better understand the surge in firearms accumulation one has to heed the warnings of our Founding Fathers against the tyranny of government as well as expand the time line going back to the gradual undermining of our constitution. That would include milestones such as late 19th century judicial opinion granting citizens rights to corporations, the privatization of The Fed, The National Security Act in 1947, the revocation of the Glass Steagel Act, etc. etc. Clearly something is fundamentally wrong with our government no matter who is in power and Mr Pitt needs to use a broader brush when painting the picture of the goings on. Denouncing "conspiracies' and those who believe in them is a convenient but often inaccurate means of dismissing legitimate concerns. Polemics only further the Hegelian Dialectic and play into the hands of the true rulers of the world.

This call to "arms" and "tea

This call to "arms" and "tea party" schtick protesting the idea that Obama is too radical was all planted by well funded "503" organizations and has been documented step by step as it has unfolded. The Rick Santelli "spontaneous" uprising on CNBC was the launch of the campaign and the website names that sprung up after were all reserved long before, paid for by wealthy neocons like the Koch family and Dick Armey. If you dislike Obama, feel free to protest, complain, or even try to impeach, but recognize what is "grassroots" and what is top-down shenanigans. The wealthy have a lot invested in Limbaugh, Hannity and the Bush tax cuts for the wealthy, industry deregulation and other loopholes that favor the elite. The last election was a referendum on economic theory - McCain stuck by the rich till the end and lost. This is democracy, the people have spoken. The tea parties and survivalist rhetoric is all sour grapes, funded from the top down to create a "narrative" that the majority disapproves of Obama when they don't quite (yet anyway). Ironically, most of the "followers" in these movements would see a tax benefit if they earn less than $250,000 or create new jobs in their businesses. I was amazed that Sean Hannity is not forced to answer for the Jim Adkisson incident. Sean ignored the issue on the air, but Adkisson was a fringe-dweller that followed Hannity for a long time, seeing only one side of the story. If Hannity had open debate and civil discourse on his program, the children's church play may not have been shot up by the madman. But Hannity's propaganda techniques worked all too well that time. While we debate the limits of free speech, Hannity and Limbaugh still seek to pit Americans against Americans to preserve hundred thousand dollar per year tax cuts for multimillionaires.

I am a

I am a dirt-worshiping-tree-hugger and I own a gun. Until my government disarms, I do not plan on giving up my little piece of leverage. Alex Jones is not even in the same room with the Liar Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity et all! Sorry dude. You cite two, count 'em, two crazy people incidents to make your claim of increased militia activities. That measely number does not constitute a "trend". Sorry. Why are people buying guns? What I hear most often, is that they do not trust their law enforcement, the govt and want to keep their options open. Nary a word about race, or winger-dinger rhetoric. Protection. Period. And dear posters, thank you for a good, interesting read.

Mr. Pitt I am looking for

Mr. Pitt I am looking for your interview with William Rodriguez, the hero from WTC the North Tower. Decorated at the White House 5 times. as for what occurred in OK City. hhhhhhhhhhhhhmmmmmmm what did you say?

Boy, oh boy. When I read

Boy, oh boy. When I read some of these gun-nut statements, when I see them defending their idiotic gun cult -- fat gut hanging over the camo-jeans, squinty eyed afraid of any and everything, chain-smoking and hacking -- I know that a government for and by the people should take the guns away from these creeps, if that government has any guts at all. Really quickly, too. The thought that a bunch of paranoids should endanger my family is just too much. No real democracy needs an armed population -- no sporting dude needs an automatic weapon. So grow up, America. Get rid of the gats and teach those poor souls that life is not to be feared, but embraced.

I am really stunned at the

I am really stunned at the people who are incensed at the idea that President Obama might spend some taxpayer money on health care or education or sustainable energy and yet turned a blind eye as Bush allowed a surplus to be pissed away on trumped up military adventures. The way pickpockets operate is that one distracts you while the other is removing your wallet. Whether it is the right howling over the left and vice versa; or the shenanigans of movie stars and murderers, you can bet your buttons that while you are paying attention to these distractions, there is a metaphorical hand in your pocket, removing your money, your freedoms, and your well-being. We dream of justice - but our boat is going over the falls.

Don't worry---- THERE ARE

Don't worry---- THERE ARE PLENTY OF LIBERALS WHO OWN GUNS IN THIS COUNTRY. Guns are not just for conservatives. Guns are for intelligent people too.

www.splcenter.org The southern poverty law center tracks the hate militias year in and year out. Part of their recent dormancy is because they have been quietly gaining membership again after Mcveigh's actions scared everyone away. I have so little respect for the militias that I never really contemplated the possibility of any meaningful conspiracy. I expected to see more activity from them now that the liberals are advancing. but damn...The republican dead enders have got to know that giving the militias money is worse than a waste of resources... but I will bet they have been doing it anyway. Catch them at it and they will lose massive face.

It's important to take these

It's important to take these nut cases seriously, at least as seriously as the North Koreans.

Mr. Pitt, I have been an

Mr. Pitt, I have been an admirer of your writing for many years...But on this piece you disappoint in your assessment of Alex Jones. I am in agreement with Clark's sentiments (4/11 0923 ) on Jones, along with a number of other comments in his defense. The one issue I have found unites the left and the right is knowledge of the US government's censored or unexamined evidence of the events of 9/11/01....i.e. "9/11 Truth". If the progressive media does not make space for respectful, frequent discourse about the very legitimate questions surrounding 9/11/01, I fear any chance of peacefully turning this ship around will be lost. I suggest you do your own research starting with the science involved in the collapse of WTC 1,2 & 7. Begin with www.ae911truth.org or http://911research.wtc7.net . The most recent peer reviewed scientific paper was published on 3/24/09 and reveals β€œ explosives were found in the World Trade Center dust. Scientists discovered both residues and unignited fragments of nano-engineered thermitic pyrotechnics in debris from the Twin Towers.” You can also watch (or read) a television interview the with Danish scientist, Neils Harrit , one of the nine scientists involved in the study; http://www.911blogger.com/node/19805 . Dr. Harrit bought into the government’s conspiracy theory until 2006 when he was made aware of the collapse of the third building (7). He saw a video of WTC 7 collapse at free fall speed and said he knew, as a scientist, there was no turning back and became involved in the 18 month, peer reviewed study.
