A Progressive Challenge to Jane Harman

There are many reasons progressives will mobilize behind the campaign of Marcy Winograd, who announced on Monday that she'll challenge incumbent Congresswoman Jane Harman in the 2010 Democratic primary.

Some will speak of Harman's pro-war record. Some will recall her support for warrantless wiretapping, followed by her irony-free indignation when it turned out that NSA snoops had taped her own phone conversations. Some will recount Harman's long public silence after being briefed on torture by the US government.

And then there's the extensive evidence that Representative Harman has gone over the top to do the bidding of the Israeli government and some of its most extreme supporters in the United States.

But what may be most significant about Winograd's race to unseat Harman in 2010 is that it reflects - and is likely to help nurture - a growing maturity among progressives around the country, who are tired of merely complaining about centrist Democrats in Congress.

Many progressives are getting a clear take-home message: Let's stop griping about lousy members of Congress and start defeating them.

Winograd, a high school teacher in South Los Angeles, is a longtime activist, who founded the Los Angeles chapter of Progressive Democrats of America. Back in 2006 - after less than three months of campaigning - she won 38 percent of the primary vote against Harman.

The launch of Winograd's new campaign (www.Winograd4congress.com) has come more than 12 months before Election Day. And the candidate's kickoff speech on Monday afternoon laid out a tapestry of compelling reasons behind her second run for Congress.

At the Venice Pier in the northern end of California's 36th Congressional district, Winograd sounded the unabashedly progressive notes that have animated her activism over the years.

Speaking of widespread economic woes in such areas as Torrance, where foreclosures have skyrocketed, Winograd declared, "It doesn't have to be this way. It is time to say NO to government waste, to trillion-dollar war budgets for endless occupations that breed more terrorists, to countless no-bid contracts in Iraq and Afghanistan that drain our treasury of hard-earned taxpayer dollars. Halliburton gets rich, while the working family in Torrance watches their home slip away."

Congresswoman Harman provides a particularly spectacular example of an officeholder who has boosted militarism while helping to undermine civil liberties and human rights. But, in essence, on the Hill she's run-of-the-mill.

As a matter of routine, most members of Congress avidly serve corporate interests and the warfare state. They benefit when progressives leave electoral battlefields to others, while complaining bitterly about corporatists and warmongers atop Capitol Hill.

Strong progressives like Marcy Winograd belong in the United States Congress. Movements that learn how to propel more candidates like her into office - while defeating the likes of Jane Harman - will gain strength for the long haul.

Jane Harm-man. How does

Jane Harm-man. How does someone like Harman win election, other than to take money from those looking for favors?

Marcy Winograd will have a

Marcy Winograd will have a much better shot at winning this election against the status quo Harman now that Sec. Deb Bowen has severely restricted the use of electronic voting machines in CA. My prediction: a stunning victory for Marcy Winograd next year. We saw it happen in Riverside County last election, where fixed elections that produced strange and repeated "victories" for Republican Bonnie Garcia against favored Democrats, quickly reversed itself as a trend, as the electronic machines registered an expected Democratic victory. The Democrats re-took that crucial state seat with Democrat Manuel Perez whipping a nasty Republican contender. Good luck, Marcy!!!

Marcy, I love you! " Strong progressives like Marcy Winograd belong in the United States Congress. " This time you will win!

Need to set term limits for

Need to set term limits for representatives;get rid of lobbyists--really are insulting to american citizens and our reps--esp. foreign country ones; have public financing and free time volunteered & donated by communications industries as PATRIOTIC service to their country--if corporations are defined individuals under certain laws, then they can be be patriotic, just as citizens can?

KICK THE INCUMBENTS OUT! it

Harman is old-boys club,

Harman is old-boys club, corrupt and out of touch. Time for her to go. Winograd sounds like someone we should support.

Harman is just one of the

Harman is just one of the thousands of reasons why the United States of America is in such sad shape. I too support term limits (2 and no more) and an end to all lobbying by foreign states, by corporations (which have been given the privileges of humans without any of the responsibilities), by PACs. The only lobbying that I believe should be done is the right each American citizen has to petition our government. And I've noticed that American citizens are largely ignored, while PACs, corporations, and foreign governments get all the perks and attention.

I live in Pennsylvania, but

I live in Pennsylvania, but I will gladly send my hard earned money to help elect a progressive and loyal American from California to this high office. All charitable and fair Americans are victimized by dishonest disloyal and callous disregard for basic human dignity and, in Jane Harman's case, the stink of easy treason for easy money.

Time to save the country!

Time to save the country! Vote ALL the vultures out of the Democratic Party. There are some on the top there who ought to go too. Some say that experience is so important for congress people to have. We have seen enough "experience", we can live well without it! The important thing to have for a Congress representative is honesty and a clear understanding of the Common Good. All Democratic candidates must understand how the Republican party works: one cannot for a moment believe that it is possible to make compromises with Republicans. They ARE the enemy. And they have ruined the country.

Why has Bubba Clinton been

Why has Bubba Clinton been allowed to destroy our Industrial Base by deregulating the Banking system with the help of Sen Chris Dodd and former Senator Phil Gramm and the Democratic party has sat in silence?? Under this group our Industrial Base has been outsourced to China in a move that has brought on a major depression that we may never see the end, and the fact that not one elected Democrat has the backbone to mention it for fear of Political reprisal. Remove most incumbents like Harman. Time to retake the party of the working classes and say goodbye to Corporatists.rheurn

During her campaign for

During her campaign for Calif. Gov. (98), Harman proved that her loyalties are not with your average American. Though she was one of only a few candidates to show up for the event, she refused to take questions from her hosts in Sacramento during a Calif. State Student Association Candidate's forum. Students finally won a chance to split question moments with the press in a small room, disallowing the large number of folks who wanted to hear how she would answer questions. She zipped her lips tight when I asked her if she would publish her responses to the surveys from special interest groups for Gubernatorial candidates. She can never be honest with us, that would be far too revealing.

It's time for real

It's time for real progressive-thinking Democrats to get elected to positions in Congress as opposed to Republicans wearing donkey jackets. Those who continue to cave in to Repugnantcan demands and/or cave in to the demands of big business have no business representing the common and average working man and woman in Washington or your state capitol.

I agree that Harman should

I agree that Harman should go, but not because we Dems should be driving out all relatively conservative members. That "purification" is what the Repubs have been doing to kill their party, and it will just leave us with a radicalized rump. Harman is bad news for her dishonesty and corruption, but there are principled conservatives in our party--I disagree with them often--who can also understand and sympathize with what Obama and more liberal people are trying to do. We need them.

Ironic that Harman was

Ironic that Harman was caught on a legal FISA wiretap after her staunch support for the illegal wiretapping of regular citizens and amnesty for the companies who illegally wiretapped for the Bush administration. Why is "our" privacy less important than her privacy? She seems to have failed to see the connection.

I live in California and

I live in California and Marcy is getting my vote, I may even work towards her election. Harman is a sellout.
