Pelosi the Enabler

Nancy Pelosi is no Dick Cheney, nor a George W. Bush. She was neither the author of a systematic policy of torture nor has she been, like Cheney and most top Republicans in Congress, an enduring apologist for its practice. It is a nonsensical distraction to place her failure to speak out courageously as a critic of the Bush policies on the same level as those who engineered one of the most shameful debacles in U.S. history.

But what she, and anyone else who went along with this evil, as lackadaisically as she now claims, should be confronted with are the serious implications of their passive acquiescence. Why did she not speak up, or if it were a matter of a lack of reliable information, demand an accounting from the executive branch, as befits a leader of the loyal opposition in Congress?

If the ranking Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee, and later House Democratic leader, lacked the authority to publicly question a policy of torture, then how can we condemn, indeed imprison, ordinary soldiers who thought it their duty to follow orders?

Even though Abu Zubaydah had been waterboarded 83 times before the September 2002 briefing of Pelosi, she now claims she was told only that the practice might be used and that it had been approved by the Bush Justice Department as legal. Wasn't that approval in itself sufficiently alarming to justify a strong and public dissent? Certainly that would have been the appropriate response when Pelosi aide Michael Sheehy, along with Rep. Jane Harman, D-Calif., were informed by the CIA in no uncertain terms five months later that Zubaydah had been subjected to specific "enhanced" methods including waterboarding. Pelosi admits to possessing that information, but according to one of her aides quoted in Politico, after Harman's letter questioning the practice received "no response" from the CIA, "there was nothing more that could be done."

Why not? Does the CIA or the White House that directs its activities stand above the law without any congressional restraint, as mandated by the U. S. Constitution that Pelosi has sworn to uphold?

Should the members of the 9/11 Presidential Commission not have been informed that two of the "key witnesses" upon whom their report was based had provided the information critical to the report's conclusions only after being waterboarded a total of 266 times? On Page 146 of that report, there appears a boxed disclaimer that even the commissioners, possessed of high security clearances, were not allowed to meet, let alone cross-examine, the witnesses or even talk with those who did the interrogations.

As the presidential commissioners conceded in their report, "We submitted questions for use in the interrogations, but had no control over whether, when or how questions of particular interest would be asked. Nor were we allowed to talk to the interrogators so that we could better judge the credibility of the detainees and clarify ambiguities in the reporting."

In short, the basic narrative of the origins and conduct of the 9/11 attack that so fundamentally perverted American politics relied on cherry-picked information that the White House and its operative in the field chose to release to the commission. As a result, we the public still know nothing of certainty about the financing of the terrorist organization emanating from Saudi Arabia and the UAE or the logistical support supplied to the Taliban and al-Qaida by agencies of the government of Pakistan.

What the public was offered was not an unvarnished look at the available evidence concerning the attack but rather a fear campaign justifying an undifferentiated and illogically constructed international war on terror. As Steve Elmendorf, chief of staff to Rep. Dick Gephardt, D-Mo., the Democratic leader following 9/11, put it: "You have to remember, in the 2002 period, the whole atmospherics, it was all about scaring people every day."

That fear-mongering drove a majority of Democrats to support the president in his invasion of Iraq, the one Arab nation where al-Qaida had been most brutally oppressed by its sworn enemy, Saddam Hussein, who had nothing to do with the 9/11 attack. The "key witnesses" affirmed that reality even after being subjected to torture, which would have proven deeply embarrassing to the Bush administration were it revealed in open court proceedings.

By acquiescing to the cover-up of unpleasant truths in the treatment of prisoners, Pelosi contributed to the betrayal of the ideal of public accountability that is the bedrock of our system of governance, which Congress is charged with protecting.

Thank you Robert Scheer for

Thank you Robert Scheer for putting this perspective in the light. Even this morning on the news, they were still talking about how Pelosi had known about these methods therefore making her an enabler and somehow culpable for the Bush administrations torture policy. I think this premis is wrong. Most of the country does not want to pursue the torturers and the ones who made torture policy. I do, but I am not going to hold Nancy Pelosi accountable. She has been pursuing a strategy that has made the democrats stronger than they ever were. As sickening as it is, sometimes you have to make decisions that will make the country and the party stronger so you can do more later. The democratic party has never been in a stronger position or made more headway toward extremely important changes that our country desperately needs. I thank Obama and Nancy Pelosi for that. I believe that Nancy Pelosi had nothing to do with our torture policy. She has been given a rediculous and bad rap.

Nancy Pelosi was not alone.

Nancy Pelosi was not alone. Most members of congress behaved in this fashion, and in so doing became guilty of "aiding and abetting" those crimes themselves. This is exactly why prosecuting them is so difficult, there are too many guilty people in high places. It's an old Mafia trick, get the new guy to commit a crime, then he can't afford to "squeal" on anyone else. And you can easily get them to commit in the first place, just remind them of Anthrax in letters, or Paul Wellstone and small aircraft. As for 9/11 consider the unthinkable: it was a government job. This is the only explanation that makes sense of Bush's constant blocking of any investigation. And there is no question that Bush and his buddies benefited, they have looted the country.

This is certainly reminicent

This is certainly reminicent of Post Nazi Germany. Many Germans knew what what actually happening but chose not to take a position.... and many times for their own safety. But this is different in that Pelosi conciously chose not to object to the torture policy even though she had the means to expose it and take a position against it. Those who willingly and knowingly acquiesce to the use of torture when they knew it was illegal and could have done something about it are, in effect, just as guilty as those who actually implemented & used it. The fact that she did not take action when she could have makes it imperative that she leave office. Since she does not have the courage and integrity to resign, then she should be removed from office by vote etc.. We do not need this type of spineless respresentation in Congress.

Mr. Scheer, as usual, is

Mr. Scheer, as usual, is right on the money. It is unlikely any of the purveyors of these heinous crimes, from top to bottom, will be brought to account simply because the silence of Congress makes them just as guilty and there is little or no desire on their part to examine their own complicity. Being afraid of smears by the right-wing media is no excuse, but this is what drives Congress to action or inaction today.

Cindy Sheehan has been

Cindy Sheehan has been saying this all along and brought forward this information when she ran against Pelosi for her seat in Congress. People dismissed her to readily, but the accusations still stand. Pelosi either fully understood the U.S. policy on torture or chose not to ask the questions she should have to hold military official accountable. Either way, she turned the other way rather than taking the ethical position. She is complicit and should be held accountable.

Scheer is right again.

Scheer is right again. Robert Parry has written an article on this website comparing the Democratic party to a battered wife. The Republicans have the role of abusive husband in his article. Is Pelosi the battered wife who puts up with this for the sake of the "family"? She needs a new job. It's crazy that America's political leadership is like this. It shows how low the country has sunk.

Pelosi betrayed the

Pelosi betrayed the Constitution and her office. This was not about "policy" distinctions or "sacrifices" for some torture fantasy of the greater good. Pelosi's actions subverted the fundamental democratic principles of our Constitution and Rule of Law. ANY "Representative" who supported such subversions can not be trusted and should be banned from holding any public office.

I think this is partly a

I think this is partly a generational problem. Our parents faced depression and world war. The toughest trials most boomers ever faced is battling for a parking spot at the mall at Christmas. It's true that adversity builds character and most boomers (I am one, btw) don't have much back bone. Here in Canada our leading newspaper, The Globe and Mail, ran an editorial last month on the torture issue saying that the Geneva Conventions are just words on a paper that can be retired by new words on paper. I call it Boomer Hubris. The same B.H. that led to the repealing of Glass-Steagall and all of Grandpa's other silly rules that were holding back the economy. We're seeing here that the saying that all it takes for evil to triumph is for good men (and women) to do nothing nothing is really true.

The fact that Rep. Pelosi

The fact that Rep. Pelosi did not come forth has, as usual, been obfuscated by several conflicting issues. At the time the administration had convinced nearly everyone that the torture issue was a matter of national security. Publicly denouncing the policy when so little was known about it at the time would have been considered by the administration, and the majority party in Congress, an act of treason, and would likely have led to her forced resignation. The mere existence of Rep. Harmon's letter has only become known relatively recently, for much the same reason. The right is using Pelosi's quite natural reluctance as a distraction from the real issue. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, and numerous others in the Bush administration, committed acts that are, and were, against the law. They need to be held accountable for their actions.

The really sad part here is

The really sad part here is that the 9/11 commission did not make a MUCH bigger stink about not being "allowed to meet, let alone cross-examine, the witnesses or even talk with those who did the interrogations". . . . and having ". . .no control over whether, when or how questions of particular interest would be asked." Further, they were not "allowed to talk to the interrogators so that we could better judge the credibility of the detainees and clarify ambiguities in the reporting." The commissioners could have and should have demanded better access to information and threatened to write op-eds on editorial pages and hit the talk show circuit to expose the cherry picking and obstructions thrown in their paths to the truth by the Bush administration. Perhaps some would argue that would be asking too much. On the other hand, what did they have to lose?

Why is it so hard to

Why is it so hard to believe that the Bush administration would mislead Pelosi when they misled or straight out lied to all of us? I think this is another distraction for us to take our eye of the ball and place blame on someone who had little power to change anything if she had known the whole truth. The GOPers are experts at displacing blame and the liberal community is buying it. I for one don't blame her for anything. We should be supporter her, not falling for Winger propoganda. We are starting hearings now on this issue. This is far more than we got during the last administration.

Robert Scheer makes sense:

Robert Scheer makes sense: Pelosi and many (most) others in the congress knew that agents of the US government were using torture as an interrogation technique. But those of us who are old enough, have access to the internet or other non-TV news sources, and WHO HAVE BEEN PAYING ATTENTION have known for years that our military and CIA have used torture in various foreign venues, and have actively taught these techniques to the armed forces of countries in conflicts around the world. So you late-blooming liberals, with your self-righteousness toward those who "knew or should have known" might consider saving a little indignation for yourselves, who also "knew or should have known" and yet did nothing.

This same dynamic holds true

This same dynamic holds true in policy decisions made about banking, health care, and the environment as well. We need to work on campaign finance reform. It will be impossible to teach old dogs new tricks within the time frame that humanity has for legitimate action on these issues. These hounds need to be replaced.

Democrat, Republican,

Democrat, Republican, liberal, conservative, left, right... many use these labels without realizing that they are a distraction by the corporate controlled media. Most in CONgress are not original thinkers, follow their corrupt leadership and lie, lie, lie, tell us whatever they think we want to hear. From what I know and where I'm coming from, I simply no longer believe the controlling dogma, fairy tales, lies and deception of religion, corporations, politics or government.

Nancy Pelosi, like the vast

Nancy Pelosi, like the vast majority of Democrats, took at face value Bush claims about "weapons of mass destruction" in Iraq... not to mention the ridiculous claim that Sadaam was a coconspirator with Al Qaeda. More recently, both she and Obama fully backed Bush's legislation which granted immunity to telecom companies who have failed to respect privacy rights of their domestic customers (If the bill was for foreign surveillance, then why did it cover ALL telephone calls?). She didn't know that the billions she helped authorize for the CIA and other covert agencies was being used for torture? Come on! The Democratic leadership is just a mealy-mouthed version of the Republicans. One party openly advocates facism as a national principle, but the other is a willing participant in the same process.

She's beginning to squirm

She's beginning to squirm just like Cheney.

I can't believe this woman

I can't believe this woman sat through dozens of briefings over more than 7 years. First she claimed she didn't know about waterboarding. Then she said she couldn't do anything because it was secret. She's just playing ring around the Pelosi.

Which part of the Bush

Which part of the Bush administration were world class criminal liars are people not accepting here? We all suspected that the captured might be abused when Donald Rumsfeld said, "The Geneva Convention doesn't apply to these people." Bush's bold faced lies even in 2006(?) said, "The United States doesn't torture." Why is Pelosi being held totally accountable when probably every Republican member of Congress and all in the Bush White House knew what was going on. I'm not saying that I'm not somewhat disappointed with Pelosi, but only because she didn't allow discussions on Impeachment of the whole slimy bunch. These people in some form or another are going to come back in another administration and I'm even hearing talk that Cheney might just consider making a run for the Presidency in 2012. GOD FORBID!!

The whole congress should

The whole congress should leave office, Those who cared to read the news were certainly aware that the Bush Admnistration was torturing, was conducting extradition etc. What do you expect when prisoners are in Guantanomo and the Bush administration says that they can do what they want to with the prisoners because they are not on US soil. Who let them get away with that myth. It's a US base, under US control, is that not the same thing is being in the US? In short lots of people have know about irregular and unlawful actions by the Bush administration. All have realized soon after the IRaq invasion that the adminstration lied about the reasons for going. CIA gave out false information. WHo's kidding who? If the congress investigates Pelosi it had better investigate the whole congress. Investigate those on the intelligence committees. Investigate the republicans as to whole excused torture. I have no doubt that many people, in congress and out have just looked the other way. I thought maybe the German people were duped about Nazi activities with regard to Jews. Then I read the book Rise and FAll of the Third Reich. From that book I saw that there were all kinds of signs of Jewish persecution, but people kept quiet.
