Pelosi Draws Response From CIA

Washington - The head of the CIA defended the agency Friday against House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's charge that she was misled in 2002 about the use of waterboarding but said it ultimately is up to Congress to decide where the truth lies.

"Let me be clear. It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress," CIA Director Leon Panetta wrote in a message to agency employees that was released to the public. "That is against our laws and our values."

Referring to Pelosi's remarks, he said, "The political debate over interrogation reached a new decibel level yesterday."

Panetta's rebuttal was far more muted that a counterattack the Republicans unleashed against Pelosi.

"I think her accusations against our terror-fighters are irresponsible and, according to the CIA's record, Speaker Pelosi was briefed on what had been done," said Sen. Kit Bond of Missouri, the senior Republican on the Senate Intelligence Committee. "It's outrageous that a member of Congress would call our terror-fighters liars."

Pelosi drew the criticism a day after opening her weekly news conference with a prepared statement accusing agency briefers of misleading her in 2002 in connection with the use of waterboarding, an interrogation technique that simulates drowning.

In the statement, she repeated that she was not told that waterboarding had been used, even though it had been, and said an aide informed her of its use after other lawmakers had been briefed in 2003.

Pelosi has been the target of a campaign orchestrated in recent days by the House Republican leadership, which is eager to undercut her statements as well as stick Democrats with partial responsibility for the use of waterboarding in the Bush administration.

Some Democrats have expressed surprise that she chose to inject herself more deeply into the controversy, especially at a time when President Barack Obama enjoys widespread public support and Republicans are suffering extremely low approval ratings. Associates of the California Democrat say she decided it was an error to allow Republican attacks to go unanswered any longer.

At the White House, spokesman Robert Gibbs decided to stay out of the controversy. "I appreciate the invitation to get involved but I'll decline to R.S.V.P.." He said the president wanted to look forward, not back.

Panetta, a former Democratic lawmaker from Pelosi's home state of California, said records from the period "indicate that CIA officers briefed truthfully on the interrogation of (terrorist suspect) Abu Zubaydah, describing `the enhanced techniques that had been employed.'"

He cited a "long tradition in Washington of making hay out of our business.... But the political debates about interrogation reached a new decibel level yesterday when the CIA was accused of misleading Congress."

He added, "We are an agency of high integrity, professionalism and dedication. Our task is to tell it like it is - even if that's not what people always want to hear."

An unclassified chart released last month by the CIA describes a total of 40 briefings for lawmakers over a period of several years on enhanced interrogation techniques. Pelosi's name appears once, as having attended a session on Sept. 4, 2002, when she was the senior Democrat on the House Intelligence Committee. Former Rep. Porter Goss, R-Fla., who at the time was the chairman of the committee and later became CIA director, also was present.

While Goss has scoffed at Pelosi's description of the briefing, other lawmakers have challenged the accuracy of the CIA's overall reconstruction of events.

They can play semantics all

They can play semantics all they want but torture is torture and those responsible should be held accountable. The notion that prosecuting those involved is somehow looking "backward" is a backward idea in and of itself! That would be like building a house on a foundation of sand rather than concrete!!! Those involved in and complicit in torture, regardless of party affiliation, SHOULD BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE TO THE FULLEST EXTENT OF THE LAW, PERIOD! Debating the definition of torture, who knew what, when is nothing more than a stall tactic and proves that America has sunk to the level of our so-called "enemies". If we do not punish for these crimes, we have can consider ourselves morally bankrupt.

"Let me be clear. It is not

"Let me be clear. It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress," Leon Panetta - Utter rubbish.

"If the president does it,

"If the president does it, then it's legal." Sec. Rice. Torture, concentration camps, sccret prison, death squads, warrentless spying, even aggressive way. Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzales, Rice. And now Obama, Biden, Reid, and Pelosi all agree: Perfectly moral. No trials, no convictions, no story. Time to move on, folks. There is no desire to restore the republic and return to the rule of law. Let's talk about more important concerns -- how's Project Runway looking?

So, would Robert Gibbs and

So, would Robert Gibbs and the Obama regime tell the Jews to "look forward and not backward" with regard to the Holocaust? Should those whose soldier-children died in Iraq "look forward and not backward?" Should people in Iraq and the Middle East look forward and not backward when their family and friends are killed by "Collateral Damage?" Now is the time to completely and finally see the superciliousness of this insidious philosophy that Looking Forward is Better than Looking Backward where any inconvenient truth is concerned. It belongs back in the Bush years of Orwellian self-contradiction and detachment from reality.

"It is not our policy or

"It is not our policy or practice to mislead Congress," CIA Director Leon Panetta wrote..." As Seth and Amy used to say: "Really?!" WMD slam dunk ring a bell, LP? Intelligence being fixed around the policy - no memory of that? Torture tapes - also known as evidence - destroyed? No recollection? Fake yellow-cake Niger invoices? Not familiar? Someone check Panetta for willful Alzheimers...

What does Panetta have to do

What does Panetta have to do with the people who lied to Congress before he was in the CIA? No one's asking what HIS policy is.

I'm no fan of Pelosi - but

I'm no fan of Pelosi - but if ever there were a bunch of hypocritical, duplicitous, miscreants breathing our air, it's the CIA for the past eight years. This is BIG and should be revealed completely.

If the CIA did brief her and

If the CIA did brief her and she did know what was going on then she's an accessory, plain and simple, and should be investigated with the rest. And if that is so, this her trying to squirm out of bearing responsibility makes her a weasel. On the other hand, if she really didn't know that torture was going on, then one might wonder whether she's effective in her job, deserving of the high level of responsibility with which she is entrusted. Did she try to find out what was going on? How hard was she trying? She really lost my respect way back when she said that impeachment was off the table. This doesn't serve to change my rather low opinion of her.

Like what else is Leon

Like what else is Leon Panetta going to say? "The CIA people whose hearts and minds I am trying to win over are a bunch of lying sobs? " OF COURSE NOT. Panetta is a decent guy, but he has an agency to run. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi has been tough, outspoken, liberal and loyal to Obama without much thanks, and the Right Wing is having a field day crudely demonizing her. Don't fall for it. Send Pelosi a letter of personal support -- and encourage her continued support for openness, transparency and the rule of law.

This was a tough week as a

This was a tough week as a Superior Court judge blocked a UTLA (United Teachers) one day walk out by teachers.......It was so good to read comments from people who weren't going to believe Blarney from professional politicians. Keep it up. Bruce Caukin

This all strikes me as a

This all strikes me as a shell game. We DO KNOW that the Bush Administration deliberately mischaracterized the facts about Iraq and the whole campaign regarding "terrorism." So Panetta must be a bit senile to suggest or imply that misleading Congress or the US citizenry has not been a past practice [regardless of what he thinks current policy may be. In fact, what he is saying NOW is misleading.] But the "proof is in the pudding," as they say. If Pelosi and Democratic Congressional were briefed, as they say, then release the briefing transcripts and PROVE IT! If you are unwilling to back up what you claim, then cut the BS. The people have lost enough faith and confidence in the intelligence community and government. It is time to simply clear the record. The GOP and Cheney want to make veiled accusations and use selective release of information, but that will not wash. I suggest that if Cheney wants to open the issue, then let everhything out INCLUDING all documentation of his involvement in autghorizing the use of the tactics he now wants to defend and declare justifiable.

Common' folks! The CIA is a

Common' folks! The CIA is a lying SOB and everyone knows that. They have NEVER been told to tell the truth whether it be to Congress or anyone else. They even lie to the President who give them their money. It is in their personal and covent interest NEVER to tell anyone what they are actually doing. Ask the Russkies or whatever you want to call the former Soviet regime. They worked like crazy trying to get moles into the CIA to find out the truth and they hardly made a dent. To be CIA is to LIE to everyone and anyone who asks. If they don't know they truth they cannot hurt you. That is their true motto. Panetta is a newcomer and the prefect dullard to head this auspiciously arrogant and secretive place. What can he know, EVER! Ask Hoover about his efforts to pierce the CIA. PRF

Is this the pot calling the

Is this the pot calling the kettle or the other way around or both? The Patriots are coming, the Patriots are coming!

We are all responsible just

We are all responsible just as Pelosi is responsible for the insanity. In response to September 11, we lost our compass. Congress approved an unnecessary war. The Patriot Act was put into effect. Rampant racism was unleashed on our Muslim population. The politics of fear were put into effect. We have to face our responsibility collectively for the torture that was imposed on prisoners through people who did not mean well. The finger pointing does not relieve anyone from responsibility. We stood by in response to the fear unleashed by the vicious attacks on the Towers. Unless we recognize our collective guilt and declare our mea culpa the insanity will continue to impair our ability to move forward and deal with the multiple problems that we face.

Why is the truth about

Why is the truth about anything so hard to come by in Washington? Isn't everything suppose to be written down for confirmation of all meetings/conferences? Yes, we know torture went on and people of very little character are saying it was okay....everyone of them need to be given the same treatment...

All the finger pointing by

All the finger pointing by the GOP toward Nancy Pelosi is nothing more than their attempt to distract from the fact that they are a party in crisis and somehow they think that trying to implicate Pelosi as a "silent partner" in the Bush interrogation policies is laughable. Let's ask the correct questions. When members of Congress are privately briefed about any military or intelligence agency program are those members even allowed to discuss the information with anyone outside the committee? No matter what Pelosi or any other committee was told about this or any other program was she in any position of authority to stop or change anything? Were there other members of both parties that attended this briefing and if so what do they say about the content? Why do the facts of every meeting, program or policy always get explained in a totally opposite way depending on the political party? Is the GOP trying to assert that somehow Nancy Pelosi is responsible for whatever program the Bush administration engaged in? The most important question beyond this silly distraction is; What things were done by the Bush/Cheney administration that WE still don't know about?

This is really terrific.

This is really terrific. the reason why Pelosi didn't want to impeach Bush was because any investigation would uncover that- she was briefed-. Now that it is out, her objections to any actionagainst the perps should be annulled. this "secret" is what kept us from having accountability from Bush-Chaney, but now she should unleash the dogs (pun intended) and go after them.

I am not a fan of Nancy

I am not a fan of Nancy Pelosi or Harry Reid after their caves to the Bush agenda over the last two plus years, but Obamaβ€˜s continuation of Bush policies upsets me more. For example: bringing back Bush’s Military Tribunals in Guantanamo, not closing Guantanamo, staying in Iraq, nation building in Afghanistan, refusing to investigate and prosecute the Bush administration crimes, backing CIA torturers, continuing the Bush Wall Street no strings attached bailout, which is estimated to cost taxpayers $12plus trillion and now letting Leon Panetta throw Pelosi under the bus. Obama morphing into Bush is not the change I voted for; I guess Rev. Wright’s comment after Obama through him under the bus, β€œhe is just being a politician,” is correct, a politician that will say anything to win then ignore the people and the constitution when elected.

Nancy is not looking smart

Nancy is not looking smart in the moment, politically or otherwise and this is where Republicans want to keep public focus... Panetta is a Democrat and his comments are quite concise... Cheney had a lot of bad things to say about the CIA in the past... Somewhere in the relationship between Cheney and the CIA and Cheney's need for 'Selective Information' in pushing his creepy agenda is the place where Nancy Pelosi will be found back then hearing whatever she actually heard, learned and understood..., and the more clarity about that will we can gain will give us all a better understanding now as to whether or not she is telling truth or lies...

Question: is Obama hanging

Question: is Obama hanging Pelosi out to dry? CIA is Executive Branch and he can call the shots. Is Pelosi too "liberal". Is Obama as free to make decisions as one hopes? Pelosi, whom one would expect to be allied with Obama, has become an inspiration for reactionary invective, allowing right-wing extremists to distract attention from Obama's announced objectives and weakening the popular outcry for prosecution of war crimes. Does this actually serve Obama's actual intent... that "forward-looking" stuff?

When Pelosi first made that

When Pelosi first made that statement my initial thought was that she is trying to save herself from any blame, also that it really went a long way in explaining why she refused to put impeachment on the table. As the story has unfolded I now wonder if that initial assessment is correct. I can't help but remember that the CIA still has a number of Bush allies firmly planted in place. So what we have is a classic he said/she said where Pelosi may be telling the truth and those in the CIA could be doing anything they can to protect the Bush administration. On the other hand, she could very well be lying through her teeth to protect her own ass. Hopefully someone will thoroughly investigate this matter so we can get to the bottom and find the truth. Pelosi's political career may very well depend on that happening.

Gee, imagine an intelligence

Gee, imagine an intelligence agency that couldn't or wouldn't falsify documents to cover their butts! Or one that didn't have 'rouge' employees with their own agendas! If I had to bet, I'd take Pelosi over Goss any day! Cheney was over at the CIA frequently, even had his own reading room! As for Obama, as Eisenhower said, "beware the military industrial complex!"

Panetta is off the wall. He

Panetta is off the wall. He doesn't know. It may not have been policy but it has been practice to deceive, often by omissions, both Congress and the public. There is along, long history of it. Republicans in Congress should keep their mouths shut when they don't really know what they are talking about. They didn't attend the meeting. They admit that. That Nancy Pelosi wants the records made public indicates that she is telling the truth.

The eerie thing is reading

The eerie thing is reading the new DoubleSpeak phrase -- terror fighters. Another one to add to all the others. I feel like I'm living in Orwell's reality.

Pelosi, was an enabler to

Pelosi, was an enabler to George W. Bush. She is as guilty as he is...War Crimes have no party lines. Dems caved (and still are) to the Repugs, it's time to pay the piper. Pelos should be in line behind Cheney when this bunch of thugs are led to the gallows after being prosecuted for War Crimes.

Pelosi is such a weasel,

Pelosi is such a weasel, just like so many others in congress. Unreal.Orwell would appreciate the doublespeak these people use on a daily basis. Also, Obama's popularity is beginning to fade as he continues to demonstrate he is anything but the agent of change but rather the minion of the banksters. We are so screwed and to make matters worse, we are being "led" by fools and charlatans.

Another Repugnantcan ploy to

Another Repugnantcan ploy to fend off prosecution of Bush and Cheney. Excuse me, but Porter Goss was the Intelligence Chair in 2002 and 2003. Start pointing fingers at him, and not Pelosi!

Does Panetta actually

Does Panetta actually contradict Pelosi? Or does he state for his department a value and a code of conduct he expects to be followed. I have not found the actual text of his letter or statement. It seems what we get is a lot of spin from others who may or may not have read that text. Any links would be appreciated.

I finally really like Nancy,

I finally really like Nancy, what she says has a ring of truth, that's what we were hearing too, that it was legal but not being done. They are liars, and if their records 'show' they told Nancy they were waterboarding up a storm, I'd tend to believe Nancy, and my own recollection of what they were trying to sell us all back then.

Kit Bond is the odd-man to

Kit Bond is the odd-man to be wrapping himself in CIA flag. He was simply playing politics, the same guy who could not believe in global warning, the same tobacco-chewing man who did not believe CID last year when that agency said Iran's nuclear bomb program had not been active for over 3 years, the same republican who along with Senator Roberts of Kansas told us that CIA was guilty of group-thinking. Shame on Kit for his reckless partisan approach to national problems in a worse way.

LET'S PROSECUTE THE

LET'S PROSECUTE THE CRIMINALS FIRST. Then, after Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld, Gonzalez, etc. are safely locked away in an undisclosed black sight where they are "questioned", let's go after the Democrat AND REPUBLICAN weasels who didn't tattle on them sooner.

The culprits here are Bush,

The culprits here are Bush, Cheney et al. I think that Pelosi did her job as the leader of the party in Congress , won a majority in 2006, got a Democratic president elected in 2008, and NO DOUBT she was given limited information on all the Bush operation techniques, how can anyone question that idea, knowing what we know how the Bush Administration and their whole modus operandi, please!! Bush took over this country in 2000 by a coup d'etat whether you want to believe it or not is up to you, look at what Bush accomplished, THE DESTRUCTION OF EVERYTHING DECENT ABOUT AMERICA. Strange how he has not been heard from since January 20, 2009.

In other countries we proud

In other countries we proud Americans consider less democratic the people(demos) take to the streets and go to the polls and DEMAND to be heard. In this self-righteous and self-satisfied country, we elect a man who makes great promises and then do nothing when he reneges. We don't demand justice, we just want the economy fixed, without considering all the injustices that have led to the fiscal mess we are in. Granted, president Obama is just one man - but he's the most powerful man in the land. We must hold him accountable. We gave him our trust and our vote. Now we must demand that he give us back our country and punish those who would undermine and destroy it.

Everybody knows Nancy Pelosi

Everybody knows Nancy Pelosi went down to Gitmo to supervise the torture to make sure it was gruesome enough. The Bush administration had nothing to do with torture, they couldn't stomach it. It was all Nancy Pelosi. She was briefed by the CIA and you know the CIA never lies. And because she was briefed by the CIA, that means she is responsible for all the torture that went on. The torture worked and we can thank Nancy Pelosi for keeping the country safe especially with all the torture she comitted.

Here we go again....more

Here we go again....more lies, obfuscation and projection so we don't discuss the issue of torture, but instead, we get to hear senseless and ridiculous debate over who knew what at what point in time. Neither the CIA nor Nancy Pelosi are credible, though if I had to give a nod to one or the other I'd give the nod to Pelosi. The Central Intelligence Agency is a covert ops agency that has been busy lying, cheating, stealing, assassinating leaders foreign and domestic...Quite frankly, they're a disgraceful lot who don't exude professionalism as much as they do psychopathy. They don't keep a clean house and we let them get away with murder; literally. Here we go again, while our "leaders" play the 3 year old blame game, torture continues and Americans think we're somehow having meaningful discussion of these horrific events.
