Senate Votes to Limit Credit Card Rate Changes

Washington - The Senate voted on Tuesday to prohibit credit card companies from arbitrarily raising a person's interest rate and charging many of the exorbitant fees that have become customary - and crippling - to cash-strapped consumers.

The overwhelming bipartisan vote of 90-5 was lawmakers' way of telling Americans that they haven't been forgotten amid a recession that has left hundreds of thousands jobless or facing foreclosure.

With the House on track to endorse the measure by week's end, President Barack Obama could see a bill on his desk by the end of the week.

"We've got too many hard-working families in Massachusetts struggling to keep their heads above water, and the last thing they need is to get whacked with unfair credit card fees," said Sen. John Kerry, D-Mass.

If enacted into law as expected, the credit card industry would have nine months to change the way it does business: Lenders would have to post their credit card agreements on the Internet and let customers pay their bills online or by phone for free. They'd also have to give consumers a chance to spare themselves from over-the-limit fees and provide 45 days notice and an explanation before interest rates are increased.

Some of these reforms are already on track to take effect in July 2010, under new rules by the Federal Reserve. But the Senate bill would put the changes into law and go further in restricting the types of bank fees and who can get a card.

For example, the Senate bill requires anyone under 21 seeking a credit card to prove first that they can repay the money or that a parent or guardian is willing to pay off their debt if they default.

Forced to give it with one

Forced to give it with one hand, they take it with the other. Please read NYTs article on how the CCCs plan on making sure they lose NO profits on this! This is yet another slap in the face to those who are responsible. "Credit Card Industry Aims to Profit From Sterling Payers" http://www.nytimes.com/2009/05/19/business/19credit.html?_r=3&hp

I figured they'd find a way

I figured they'd find a way to try. We have a "free for life" credit card that I almost cancelled. Boy, am I glad I didn't.

So now it appears the good

So now it appears the good guys will have to make up for the lost penalties charged the bad guys. Hmmmm, I wonder if this will cut down consumer consumption, otherwise known as the grease that makes the U.S engine run. Just trading one evil for another. Piffle!! I think I'm beginning to like being an old person because I can soon escape the nonsense that has overtaken our institutions and their leaders.

Is no one concerned about

Is no one concerned about the 25% interest the card companies charge? I am! I would like to see some action in that area. Lower the interest rates. I'll admit that there are positives occurring, I just do not think they are going far enough.

I can assure you that a 90-5

I can assure you that a 90-5 vote ensures this bill is virtually loaded with loopholes. This is little more than a hologram before our hypnotized eyes, behind which the Oligarchs of Finance will continue to fleece us. Last week I received correspondence from my business card carrier stating that my interest and fees would be increasing significantly. Obviously they have slipped under the wire of even the window dressing of this new legislation. DO NOT HOLD YOUR BREATH for meaningful reform from this administration unless you have a phone handy for your 9-1-1 emergency call.

There are a lot of good

There are a lot of good things about this bill especially that 18 to 21 year olds have to have co-signers to get every card that is offered. BAD THING INCLUDED IN THE BILL: The NRA got included in this same bill that one can now carry a loaded gun into our national parks. Wow! I feel so safe now. NOT!! WHEN ARE WE GOING TO INSIST ON STAND ALONE BILL LEGISLATION!!
