Obama Speaks: Will Palestine or Pakistan Decide?

From his first "greeting of peace from Muslim communities in my country: assalaamu alaykum," President Barack Hussein Obama showed how to use the bully pulpit. Some listeners might have found him pedantic or even preachy, but he was delivering his sermon to American and Israeli audiences as much as to the world's Muslims. "As the Holy Koran tells us," he set the tone, "be conscious of God and speak always the truth."

Nowhere was his truth more nuanced, more powerful and less applauded by his Egyptian audience than in his declaration of America's unbreakable bond with Israel, tying it directly to the Holocaust.

"Tomorrow, I will visit Buchenwald, which was part of a network of camps where Jews were enslaved, tortured, shot and gassed to death by the Third Reich," he said. "Six million Jews were killed - more than the entire Jewish population of Israel today. Denying that fact is baseless, ignorant and hateful. Threatening Israel with destruction - or repeating vile stereotypes about Jews - is deeply wrong, and only serves to evoke in the minds of Israelis this most painful of memories while preventing the peace that the people of this region deserve."

These were strong words in a part of the world that continues to spread the anti-Semitic venom of "The Protocols of the Elders of Zion" and regularly denies that the Holocaust happened, as Iranian President Ahmadinejad had done only the night before. Yet Obama found it equally "undeniable that the Palestinian people - Muslims and Christians - have suffered in pursuit of a homeland.

"For more than sixty years they have endured the pain of dislocation," he declared. "Many wait in refugee camps in the West Bank, Gaza and neighboring lands for a life of peace and security that they have never been able to lead. They endure the daily humiliations - large and small - that come with occupation."

The Palestinian plight is "intolerable," said Obama. "America will not turn our backs on the legitimate Palestinian aspiration for dignity, opportunity and a state of their own."

At a time when huge numbers of Israelis and Palestinians have lost faith in a two-state solution, the president of the United States was personally committing himself to meet the aspirations of both sides "through two states, where Israelis and Palestinians each live in peace and security.

"That is in Israel's interest, Palestine's interest, America's interest and the world's interest," he declared.

How do we get from here to there? By the Arab states taking new steps beyond the Arab Peace Initiative, he urged. And by Palestinians and Israelis meeting the obligations they have already accepted under the Road Map.

"Palestinians must abandon violence," said Obama. "Resistance through violence and killing is wrong and does not succeed. For centuries, black people in America suffered the lash of the whip as slaves and the humiliation of segregation. But it was not violence that won full and equal rights. It was a peaceful and determined insistence upon the ideals at the center of America's founding."

Israel, he insisted, must acknowledge the Palestinians' right to their own state, take concrete steps to help resolve the continuing humanitarian crisis in Gaza and the continuing lack of opportunity in the West Bank, and put an end to Jewish settlements on Palestinian land.

"The United States does not accept the legitimacy of continued Israeli settlements," said Obama. "This construction violates previous agreements and undermines efforts to achieve peace. It is time for these settlements to stop."

Whether Obama can make his vision stick remains to be seen, though cynics will remain a dime a dozen. But, the success of the speech in Cairo will make it that much harder for Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu to use his allies in Congress to soften Obama's demands on Israel. Obama added little new about how he hoped to bring Hamas or the Iranians, who supply Hamas, to accept a two-state solution.

A bigger problem for Obama's relations with the world's Muslims will be his military escalation in Afghanistan and his ever-deepening involvement in Pakistan. In his speech, he defended both as a response to al-Qaeda and other violent extremists "who pose a grave threat to our security" and who are "determined to kill as many Americans as possible."

The question he did not address was whether American intervention would subdue that threat or recruit more Afghans, Pakistanis and other Muslims from around the world against the United States. The evidence so far is that an overwhelmingly military response is doing far more harm than good. Why doesn't Obama see that? Why doesn't he heed his own advice to the Palestinians?

"Violence is a dead end," he told them. "It is a sign of neither courage nor power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus. That is not how moral authority is claimed; that is how it is surrendered."

One need not be a nonviolent activist to hear the wisdom of Barack Hussein Obama's words, especially as American drones continue to kill innocent Afghans or Pakistanis.

There was a lot of hypocrisy

There was a lot of hypocrisy in Obama's speech. He mentioned the "rule of law" many times while his government refuses to apply the rule of law to those in the former administration who committed war crimes, crimes against humanity, and the supreme war crime of aggressive war against Iraq. Let the Obama practice what he preaches.

Amen.

Amen.

A great speech!!! EXCEPT

A great speech!!! EXCEPT for the Nixon "slip". . .Harry Truman said that "Richard Nixon is the only man I ever met who could lie out of both sides of his mouth at the same time!" Obama, a student of history, has obviously "borrowed" the "skill" from Nixon. . .In that as he speaks of violence as a "dead end" and NOT a "a sign of. . . courage. . .or power to shoot rockets at sleeping children, or to blow up old women on a bus" he authorizes the use of drones to kill innocent Afghans and Iraqis in a half-assed attempt to root out "terrorism!. Hey, Barack! Looks a lot like "Both Sides Now!" And, we are NOT talking about a Joni Mitchell song! !!!

President Obama must not

President Obama must not forget who voted him in and why. If he insists on being a "war" president than he better prepare himself to exit the presidency the next time around. The majority Americans have proven they have options on who gets elected. Although the Republicans are no longer an option (unless they take over by a military coup) there are others in the Democratic Party that will take up the slack. The ironic part is, President Obama inherited a huge piles of dropping the GOP elephant left on his path to clean up. Wannabe a "war" president will only prevent him from becoming the greatest president ever! He has a choice and he better take it! Other wise he will implicate himself to the disaster that was the GWBush/Dick Cheney era.

Pretty speeches are great,

Pretty speeches are great, but actions speak louder than words. If he wants to achieve some concrete gains in the Muslim world, the President should exit Iraq and Afghanistan. This won't happen until the US controls the energy resources therein. The President should say to Israel, no more money until the settlements are dismantled, Palestinians repatriated, and two states firmly in place. That won't happen either. And as other posters have mentioned, American has some nerve preaching non violence even as we slaughter yet more people in the Middle East.

Obama's speech was

Obama's speech was uplifting, courageous and inspiring. Please remember, it's always much easier to say exactly what needs to be done than it is to accomplish it. Accomplishing any great task requires cooperation of the many, while speaking what needs to be done takes only one person. Before we berate Obama for not following his own advice, let's recognize the political arena we've created and acknowledge that he's not all-powerful in his ability to change the tide of history through the system that is our democracy. We need to take some responsibility for the insipid state leadership we've sent up to Washington - career politicians for the most part, many of whom seem more interested in getting reelected than in doing the hard work of the people. He must work within the political framework we've given him, otherwise he'd be just another well-meaning dictator. We don't anoint kings in our country, we appoint proxies and ask them to work together to synthesize competing ideas..

I keep wondering who or what

I keep wondering who or what is pulling the strings that keep the Obama puppet doing a non-progressive dance? He keeps saying and promising things which he then fails to do. Why the disconnect? Should we blame it on "conservative" Democrats? Or the Trilateral Commission Bilderberg Group, etc., who, some claim, groomed and put him in office to *appear* populist and *say* things that will keep the plebes from revolting?

I believe Obama to be

I believe Obama to be sincere in his desire for Peace. He has been left a huge pile of Elephant dung to clean up & his tone seems to indicate remorse for past US aggression. People we have to realize that if Obama were to immediately pull out of Iraq & Afghanistan (which we all want) we would quite likely see absolute chaos. He's dealing w/ the situation he was left, not the one he desires. As for drones bombing civilians I think that may be somewhat over hyped & over blown. War always includes civilian casualties & we all hate war. Criticism is good & right & serves to keep a leader in check but so far I have to mostly applaud the efforts & hope cool heads win the day.

It was a very good speech.

It was a very good speech. Obama is incrementally setting the stage for change not only in the Middle East but in America as well. But one should expect contradiction and hypocrisy. Change comes slowly to its stubborn recipients. In this category I include Israelis and Palestinians and yes, Republicans

Great show, Mr.

Great show, Mr. Obamadoodledandy - talk 'em in and outa that wet paper bag, keep the rap going, leave no Muslim behind in your brave new world of doublethink and newspeak where peace is war and war is peace and a drone by any other name is still a drone. Pete Edler, Stockholm

Obama ignores the fact that

Obama ignores the fact that Islamic terrorists are by and large inspired by their religion, not by poverty. They find an enormous amount of material in mainstream Islamic texts to justify violence. Read what the terrorists say to each other, not the press releases from various western Islamic organizations.

Obama speaks with forked

Obama speaks with forked tongued. Their violence is bad; ours is-- oh, we don't talk about our violence. As GW Bush said "people don't know how good America is..."

Weissman's article

Weissman's article rightfully emphasizes the drones. Back in the days of the Vietnam War, if Neil Sheehan can be believed, it was the bombings that turned the hearts and minds of the people against us. Really, it does no good to say, "Well, the Taliban and Al Quida kill civilians on purpose, whereas when we do it, it is 'collateral damage.'" Our effectiveness in Afghanistan and in Pakistan is being undermined as I sit here by collateral damage. Regarding Afghanistan, Afghan acquaintances tell me the one thing Afghans are really practiced at is in repelling those perceived as invaders. Nothing does more to give Americans the character of "invaders" than civilian deaths.

Let's not forget Iraq

Let's not forget Iraq either. Let's also take a look at Egypt where torture is a daily occurrence and their "elections" amount to a 22 year Mubarak dictatorship. Lastly let's not forget Israel and particularly the Likud who see expansioninto Palestinian territory far more readily than providing Palestinians with their own state.

And Obama has it right about

And Obama has it right about terror recruitment. Poverty and hopelessness is what drives these people into the arms of the Taliban. One thing he did not mention is the poverty is caused by the military dictatorships we support. They would include Egypt and Pakistan.

It may be a long road, but

It may be a long road, but at least this President WANTS and is actively SEEKING peace. The same cannot be said of his predecessor, nor could it have been said of McCain. Everyone seems to think Obama isn’t moving fast enough, but if you think about it, he has been in office for less than 6 months! I think he has done a phenomenal job with the mess he’s inherited, and I can only imagine that with such a start - combined with his strong determination - how different the world will be in 4 – 8 years.

THIS SPEECH WAS FOR MUSLIMS!

THIS SPEECH WAS FOR MUSLIMS! Are American’s really so egocentric? He flew all the way to CAIRO for 2 main objectives: (1) Reach out to an Arab world still seething from treatment by the Bush administration to give a direct, compassionate, "we've changed", new viewpoint of America to millions upon millions of Arab Muslims; AND (2) appeal to the “Israeli/Palestine common man” of the Gaza Strip, the very men responsible for the daily killing, to STOP. If you listen, he was eliciting PAST HISTORY, SHAME, & LOGIC in the hopes to maybe stem the meaningless loss of life in what has become one of the worst humanitarian nightmares in recent history.// This speech had NOTHING whatsoever to do w/internal American politics. It’s an unfair, GOP-worthy trick to apply his Cairo words out of context back to a different agenda (like disappointment the “change” to his base still hasn’t come to fruition). Bush/Cheney haven’t a moral fiber between them to care about anything but the almighty $$$, nor would they be caught dead in such an anti-American part of the world. Obama should be applauded for giving such a historical & brilliant speech and if it keeps one little girl alive, so she might one day run a marathon, or cure AIDS, or meet some traveler and sire the first WOMAN U.S. president, I say right on. This was a humanitarian mission: there’s a HUGE difference between trying to stop the senseless death caused by a 13-yr-old kid being given rocket launchers by some jerk vs. jerks being given carte blanche to “smart bomb” w/an out-of-control military budget in the administration he just inherited.// I have to admit the irony IS staggering though… *sigh*

If the President wants to be

If the President wants to be credible, he must stop bombing Afghanistan, and leave Iraq and Afghanistan. We are not only antagonizing Moslems by occupying their countries, we are wasting precious funds we desperately need at home for healthcare and cures for diseases.

Many good words said, and

Many good words said, and many omitted also. The most important said, for the first time in any of his speeches i heard, were "human rights." He almost said human rights are the universal standard, above politics. Our movement group has focused our call on the President to recognize the universal declaration of human rights and various conventions that translate that vision into international law. When he does so, he will see that the rights of refugees inhere in the individual and are not subject to "hard compromises" by political negotiators.

Sorry, "poverty and

Sorry, "poverty and hopelessness" is NOT "what drives these people into the arms of the Taliban." Study after empirical study has shown terrorists to be wealthier and better educated than the general population.

Obama has been in the center

Obama has been in the center of power for many years; but now he is the center. As a person who began with some human decency, let's see how he morphs after a few yrs in the hottest seat of power in the world. Right now, I think we see his struggle to try and be the decent person/leader while pleasing his handlers who let him become the new american icon. I don't think he can do anything except speak with a forked tongue. His survival is based on that. I feel he will try to inject his personal beliefs in peace/freedom/decency into his presidency, but I have grave doubts that he will be allowed to do anything that goes against the globalization goals of the ruling class. As a consequence he will keep coming across as duplicitous. Any change will really depend on the people organizing and creating a groundswell of pressure for change. It has been done before and it now our path again. Obama was totally correct when he spoke about the people of the country keeping his toes to the fire in order for him to create change. He knew what he was saying last year---why does the public take so long to hear the message clearly and take meaningful action.

The Big O got much better

The Big O got much better press on the Israel-Palestine bit of his "Islam" speech than he deserved. Sure it would be helpful if the Israelis would discontinued their "settlement" expropriation of Palestinian territory. But what of the close to 50% of the Palestinian territory under the '67 borders already stolen for settlements and the Wall? As virtually all Israeli PMs have understood, "facts on the ground" are what really count. Until the US backs its "demands" on the Israelis by withdrawing the $3 billion in "foreign aid" on which they are utterly dependent, the territory left to the Palestinians will continue its rapid approach towards zero.

A small precision: Again and

A small precision:

Again and again are we reminded of this figure, six millions, as the death toll of these camps.

Don't reach for your lawyer's phone number: I am not going to deny that six millions Jews were killed by these barbarous murderers. I would just like to remind everyone that nazi death camps killed about 20 millions people, from Roms and communists to retarded and resisters.

I am not denying that the nazis were methodically trying to eradicate the Jewry of Europe, I am just pointing out that they were just as well trying to eradicate the free-masons among others.

So sad not to see wars

So sad not to see wars ended....

Can't figure O out!

Can't figure O out!

In many ways, Obama's Cairo

In many ways, Obama's Cairo speech was a breath of fresh air but it remains to be seen whether concrete deeds match the fine words. For too long Israel has been allowed to blatantly ignore UN resolutions, flout International Law and pay scant regard to human rights, sadly with the support of previous US administrations. It's leaders have to be told firmly that this support has to be earned by complying with these conventions. Alternatively, the running sore of the Israel/Palestine problem could be solved at a stroke if the will is there by withholding the billions of dollars annual subsidy. Likewise, the Palestinians (ie Fatah and Hamas) must be persuaded to get their act together, to end the pointless and counter-productive resistance to Israeli occupation. Finally, contrary to the opinion of many, talks have to be made with Hamas, the elected rulers of Gaza. If none of these problems are faced, the tit-for-tat killings will continue, the insatiable Israelis will occupy more and more of the West Bank until someone(?) decides they have had enough.

President Obama's speech is

President Obama's speech is all but forgotten - gone with the wind. And rightly so. Reality has a way of doing that with words. Had he spoken more simply and closer to reality he might not be alive today. Finally, perhaps, all Obama is trying to do in that terrible job is to stay alive - and who could blame him for that? Pete Edler, member, Swedish Writers Union, Stockholm.

A note to the President.

A note to the President. Great speech. But: Speak of peace - and then DO peace, NOT War. Lead, don't be led by the scare mongers and militarists. And don't promise any more than you can and are willing to sacrifice to deliver.
