Gimme That Old-Time Religion

George W. Bush left office with a public approval rating under 30 percent. Less than 30 percent of Americans currently describe themselves as Republicans. The amalgam of evangelical Christians, hardcore gun-rights fanatics, anti-tax, anti-immigrant and anti-choice voters who make up the base of the Republican Party amount to less than 30 percent of the overall electorate.

These numbers reflect the present state of affairs for the GOP: they are a party controlled by their base, the same group of Americans whose support for Bush never wavered, and who still call themselves Republican despite the serial debacles of the last decade. These are the voters who listen to Limbaugh, Savage, Hannity and Beck, who watch Fox News to the exclusion of every other network, who think evolution is a fraud because dinosaurs are not mentioned in the Bible, and who believe President Obama is a secret Islamic terrorist communist Jew with a bum birth certificate.

These voters have spent the last 30 years being the single most reliable voting bloc in the entire electorate, and this has come to present a potentially lethal problem for the Republican Party in general, and for their future electoral prospects specifically. For a long time, the loyalty of their voter base propelled the GOP into a position of complete dominance - if live, man-eating jaguars rained from the sky on election day, the GOP base would still turn out en masse to pull the handle for every candidate on the ballot with an "R" after their name, a fact that made the difference in a half-dozen midterms and at least two presidential elections.

That loyalty made the GOP base the most muscular part of the party, but it is that very strength which is now tearing the party to pieces. Consider the lesson that was provided during the 2008 Republican Party primary season. Arkansas Governor Mike Huckabee became the darling of the GOP base, earning roughly 50 percent of the GOP base vote in virtually every Red-state primary. The other, more broadly popular GOP candidates like Rudy Giuliani and Mitt Romney, needed those votes to prevail, but were forced to fight for the base-voter scraps left by Huckabee. This lack of base-voter support was what ultimately doomed their campaigns.

Huckabee was not widely supported by any voter bloc beyond the GOP base, and therefore had no real chance of securing the Republican nomination, but his popularity with the base gave artificial life to his campaign and sucked the air out of the others. Huckabee stayed in the race just long enough to cripple Giuliani and Romney before fading away himself, and in the end, John McCain wound up winning the nomination pretty much by default.

The problem for McCain in the 2008 general election is the same one currently affecting the Republican Party at large: he could not win without the support of the GOP base, but the core beliefs of that base were so out of touch with mainstream America that McCain likewise could not win if he catered to them. He was forced to flee his previous positions on immigration, climate change, taxes and campaign finance reform to satisfy base voters who already roundly despised him because of his positions on immigration, climate change, taxes and campaign finance reform, and this ultimately deranged his whole campaign. Picking Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to be his running mate was yet another sop to base voters, and is now widely believed to have been the last nail in his electoral coffin.

Seven months later, the GOP is still turning itself inside out over the dilemma posed by the strength and influence of their wholly-out-of-touch base. A wide swath of high-ranking Republicans, especially in the Senate, are trapped between the hard knowledge that catering to their base is a guaranteed recipe for defeat and disgrace, and the cold fact that their base is the only group left in America willing to call themselves Republican. They can't win with them, can't win without them, and this paradox has become where the lines of a full-fledged Republican Party civil war have been drawn.

The question of who is joining which side was made clear Friday in an event at the Rock Church in Hampton Roads, Virginia. Newt Gingrich and Mike Huckabee held court for three hours during a lecture titled "Rediscovering God in America," during which they "urged Christians to get involved in politics to preserve the presence of religion in American life," according to a report by the Virginian-Pilot. "They and other speakers warned about the continuing availability of abortion, the spread of gay rights, and attempts to remove religion from American public life and school history books."

"I am not a citizen of the world," said Gingrich during the lecture. "I am a citizen of the United States because only in the United States does citizenship start with our creator. I think this is one of the most critical moments in American history. We are living in a period where we are surrounded by paganism."

"Huckabee told the audience he was disturbed to hear President Barack Obama say during his speech in Cairo, Egypt, on Thursday that one nation shouldn't be exalted over another," continued the Virginian-Pilot report. "'The notion that we are just one of many among equals is nonsense,' Huckabee said. The United States is a 'blessed' nation, he said, calling American revolutionaries' defeat of the British empire 'a miracle from God's hand.' The same kind of miracle, he said, led California voters to approve Proposition 8, which overturned a state law legalizing same-sex marriages."

This is the kind of talk GOP base voters lap up, and is also the kind of talk that has left the Republican Party with less than 30 percent support nationwide. Both Gingrich and Huckabee are believed to be seriously considering a run for the White House in 2012. Even at this early date, both appear to be angling for the support of GOP base voters, as evidenced by their remarks in Virginia last week. If they keep talking like they did on Friday, like as not that support will be there for them, but they very well could live to regret it. GOP base support wins primaries but not much else these days, and every time someone caters to that base, another hole gets ripped in the fabric of the Republican Party.

In other words, a whole lot of Faustian chickens are coming home to roost in the GOP's crumbling coop. The party courted those base voters, championed them, pandered to them and ultimately empowered them. Now, that power is subsuming the party, and for the time being, there is no end in sight.

Those base voters are truly

Those base voters are truly base.

I completely agree with this

I completely agree with this piece. I live in the Bible Belt and even here support is slowly erroding.

God belss them and may God

God belss them and may God save their wretched souls...........Do think that will make them happy?

Lets have fun with this

Lets have fun with this quote. "'The notion that we are just one of many among equals is nonsense,' Huckabee said. The United States is a 'blessed' nation, he said, calling American revolutionaries' defeat of the British empire 'a miracle from God's hand.'" Here's the fun part, let's put it in Iran's words. "'The notion that we are just one of many among equals is nonsense,' Huckabee said. 'Iran is a 'blessed' nation, he said, calling Iranian revolutionaries' defeat of the British empire 'a miracle from God's hand.'" Funny stuff, eh?

Well, one of the greatest

Well, one of the greatest things about America is that everyone has a right to believe whatever they want to believe ... no matter how STUPID! I for one am content to let the base of the Republican party wallow in their uneducated God-fearing patriotic ignorance for a good long time... about as long as their views continue to represent 30% of the electorate (or less) that will be just fine with me. Let them get their sum total of world knowledge from Fox News and the Bible. Obama has raised the level of the political dialogue and they will never be able to join in unless they renounce their faith in Hannity and start watching Keith Olbermann regularly!!

Hey more taxes are good? I

Hey more taxes are good? I tend to listen to Democracy now. Tend to agree with what mantra is coming democrats(seems more like accepting your fellow man). I like to think I am a true American Its not my place to tell a woman what she should feel. Its not my place to think I know when life starts or stops. Who am I to tell anyone boy boy girl girl who they should love? Let alone make it a law and PAY someone to tell someone how they feel is illegal,(kind of seems like a stupid human trick). I live in a country with very strict gun control and it doesn't work here at all, very scary. How about the congresspersons who are for gun control but have personal guns just like the very rich, (Guns Control mean only the rich and powerful will have guns)? I think Jesus was one of the coolest people ever. I don't think anyone could go wrong following in his foot steps I don't think you can take the bible as the word to many translations, hey it doesn't even say it is(the word) in the bible. But someone here left a post about ball game emotions, politics or mentality ...my team their team. When I hear or see a article about Republican Democrat seems to be a con to keep your eye off the truth. "Politicians on both side are not for the people." Question to the newest big democrat, Mr. O what is right about killing and war? You said no but here you go copying Bush, do you suppose if we spent trillions on roads schools hospitals and food instead of paying war profiteers anyone would listen to Al-Qaeda

You underestimate these

You underestimate these people at your peril. The Democratic party is doing now what it does best, fracturing along predictable fault lines; health care reform is not going to happen, re-regulating the financial sector isn't going to happen, gender discrimination will continue, and the Democratic base will turn away to third party catch-alls. That thirty percent majority will be all it takes before you realize you had it all and squandered the opportunity.

Talk about "selective logic"

Talk about "selective logic" ! Governor Mike Huckabee says that "The United States is a 'blessed' nation, calling American revolutionaries' defeat of the British empire 'a miracle from God's hand.' " Is he talking about the same God that led us so gloriously out of Vietnam?

Gingrich's statements will

Gingrich's statements will continually divide, dissent and destroy

Evangelists, televangilits

Evangelists, televangilits and such are more like CEOs of large corporations, interested in filling their pockets and living on the hi hog tax free life than promoting healing for the souls of those wounded by socio-political injustice. How much was Jesus paid for his crown of thorns?

Sorry! Not all evangelical

Sorry! Not all evangelical Christians are such horrid right-wing fanatics as the writer imagines. I have been a fundamentalist evangelical Christian ever since I was a member of the Cradle Roll back in the early 1930s. But because of my knowledge, experience, and understanding of what the Bible teaches concerning Christian social responsibility, I am a wild-eyed radical left-wing Democrat, whose heroine is Mrs. Eleanor Roosevelt!

Maybe reading Kingsolver's

Maybe reading Kingsolver's "Poinsonwood Bible" would help more of the evangelical crowd to regard religion as individual and NOT institutional, nor a weapon for demagogues.

Fanatics have no room in

Fanatics have no room in society. if they have a choice , they can behave dictatorially. They are as good as criminals. GOP will be ruined/doomed if they entertain them any further. They can destroy the country. nick

The economic right-wing has

The economic right-wing has often cultivated a social right-wing movement as a means of securing their agenda and getting citizens to steer away from their own economic self interests. The question is, with what will the oligarchy replace their eroding social conservative base to maintain their elite agenda?

So let me see if I

So let me see if I understand Clucklebee ... God helped Christians to rise up and defeat Christians by way of the American Revolution. Does that mean some Christians are more blessed than other Christians?

This is one of the best

This is one of the best pieces William Rivers Pitt has written. Very insightful. The only thing I would add to this is that the Republicans have totally lost the support of empiricists like me. By embracing the faith-based community, they have lost the fact-based community almost totally. This conflict expresses itself in so many forms!

I agree the far right should

I agree the far right should not be underestimated. Two years ago they looked invincible and the Democrats were on the verge of extinction. Things can change quickly in politics. The democrats would do well to figure out what they stand for, and start to move towards some goals, like health care and world peace..

God's hand was wielded by

God's hand was wielded by the French, whose sending of a huge fleet and 5000 troops to Yorktown held off a British fleet in the decisive Battle, which may have resulted in the losing of the Revolutionary War without them. FRENCH Fries anyone? Obama should have thanked them in his speech in France

"...the present state of

"...the present state of affairs for the GOP: they are a party controlled by their base..." That is a good thing - I'm not saying I like what the base believes BUT at least they got what they voted for. UNLIKE Obama supporters who have been shredded with never ending disappointment and policy reversal.

The Central Banking Party is

The Central Banking Party is the one party of this nation and has been ever since the passage of the Federal Reserve Act - Republican vs Democrat used to mean something, but now it is the same party - the party that never questions the desires of the Central Bank - a private corporation that owns Congress and Obama and every President since Kennedy. Writers who keep us focused on the Right/Left paradigm serve to distract from the grand piracy that continues in full view while both 'parties' sit on their thumbs. Lumping all those hot issues together doesn't work anymore - how about uniting members of both parties who share a passion for the Bill of Rights instead of all of those distractions from our current Constitutional crisis. BTW, 'hard right' wrt gun ownership = gun confiscation. 'Hard Right' is centralized power, such as the former Soviet Union, Hitler's Germany and all the other totalitarian regimes in history - step #1: Confiscate weapons. The Federal Government is strictly limited in it's power to the short list enumerated in the Constitution - which does not include the power to limit citizen's right to own guns. As far as I can tell, Obama has made little progress in repealing any meaningful measure of the totalitarian powers that Bush arrogated to himself unhindered by the sycophantic Congress - all owned by the Banks. Audit the Federal Reserve Bank - support HR 1207

At this point, I'm not sure

At this point, I'm not sure it even matters what the Republicans do. The Democrats are going to be victims of their arrogance, greed and corruption. I despise the Repubs, and voted for Obama, but he is doing such a horrendous job he's practically handing them 2012 on a silver plate. His deficits alone practically guarantee a Republican victory. They are going to backfire big time. The extent of his corruption is staggering in the extreme. I mean, he's giving TRILLIONS to the corporates, and nothing to the people. My prediction is that Obama is going to leave office quite unpopular and disgraced. Wait till people realize that his health care "reform" will actually make things worse. He's simply in way, way over his head and doesn't know what he's doing. The US is facing major problems, and all he can offer is platitudes. Well, platitudes aren't going to cut it. It's going to be a repeat of 1964 and 1968. The Democrats will go from a solid victory to a resounding defeat. I certainly won't vote for them again. Not a chance.

To be fair Obama, who i

To be fair Obama, who i voted for, has not actually produced a legitimate birth certificate, and was confused about which hospital he was born in.

Religion and politics should

Religion and politics should never...mix. More people have died due to religion than any other cause - any disease, any natural disaster. There is a time and place to talk with or about God, but within Government- that isn't it. And seriously if this is what the people in power are talking like.. that makes me more scared than say, any nuclear weapon. It's funny that they talk about Paganism also :) Paganism is the root of every religion. The only reason it became thought of as an "evil" religion is because Christian leaders - around what 1200-1300A.D didn't want competition- didn't want people to question "THEIR" religion. "Blessed " :) right.. I guess it ( the united states forming) - had nothing to do with taxation.. at all .. Our forefathers would be so proud huh.

The problem for republicans

The problem for republicans is that they were never relevant. They got to live out the illusion that they were but we are paying the pric for it now, and my generation especially will be paying the costs our entire lives.

To Anonymous who mentioned

To Anonymous who mentioned the French maritime intervention in the American revolution, it must be emphasized how daring that feat was. After the seven year war in Europe England ended up with an overwhelming superiority on the seven seas. The slipping of french frigates past the english blockade and the subsequent positive outcome is a military feat of no small measure. Where god comes into play in all that (and if he even does...) escapes me completely. But if the core republican base wish to see an intelligent military design...they have their right to membership in the flat-earth society...and I hope that they continue renewing it!

I am one of those people you

I am one of those people you dismiss, though I am agnostic rather than religious, and I would rather the GOP stay true to conservative principles—call them hard-core gun rights, anti-tax, anti-immigrant, anti-choice, whatever you please—and lose election after election rather than compromise with the garbage that is the current American left. Far as I'm concerned, "moderates" should leave the Republican Party or the party's base should leave them and form a true conservative party. the Democrats are destroying this country and there's no reason elements of the Republican Party should be helping them do it.

To be fair, I was born in

To be fair, I was born in the same year Obama was. My parents tell me that it was in a hospital in Newport Kentucky, and my ancestors signed the Declaration of Independence. Some were even native Americans. I can't produce a valid birth certificate, though, so I guess I can't run for office either.

Wasn't it Faust who kept

Wasn't it Faust who kept building into eternity? Earlier prognostications of the demise of the Far Right or Near Right are greatly exaggerated. Many conservatives made their way back into European politics this week during recent voting. Gather the intellectuals of Europe as they dismiss this slow, steady momentum of "fascism" with a new face as a response of humanity attempting to hold on to authoritarianism rather than participate in democracy. The murder of George Tiller in my own hometown of Wichita should be a signal to all that the extremism which the religious right advocates including Mr. "Restoration of the Consitution himself: Senator Sam Brownback (who will become our next governor of Kansas) is frightening enough, but with his Dominionist friends using politics mixed with religion, well, its just another signal that a loaded gun is being pointed at my head and eventually yours. These "faustian folks" are not going away. They are simply gathering their storm clouds like the "snakes" they claim to be, back in their snake holes as the former preacher Kennedy of Florida proclaimed. These "folks" comprise one of the most solidly organized " folk movements" and armed to the hilt with fully automated lethal weapons ready to let loose when all else continues to fail. That is what happened to Dr. George Tiller and his murderer ( in jail three blocks from my house) is a reminder why I keep my eyes, ears, nose, and mouth ready in the event these perverts who call themselves Christians and freedom loving citizens come near me, my family or my nation. No matter my vigilance I now get one for a governor. God save us all.

The Republicans have too

The Republicans have too much airtime. Their policies didn't work and they are disgraced by endless spending, endless war, and now an endless debate on torture. Yet they still defend torture, endless war, and race baiting. They criticize the democrats for over spending, yet half of the deficit or more was made by a Republican. The mainstream media and cable tv news give these losers too much time to continue their hateful rhetoric. We've heard all that stuff. Why are they allowed to repeat it over and over? They are taking away time from new, useful and practical ideas.

The Republicans will rise

The Republicans will rise again, the tide will turn, and I don't think it will take long. I do believe Americans are basically conservative, and will return to their roots when the Democrats botch things up. And that will probably come sooner than later. I don't think health care reform will be popular whatever shape it takes, and it's likely to wind up an ugly mutt. And I think the Democratic plan on energy and climate change is focused too much on carbon emissions control, which is boring, uninspiring and costly (yes, a tax is as good a word as any), while almost entirely lacking in visionary efforts like solar power and electric vehicles, which could inspire the public's imagination and produce millions of jobs. But they won't do it because it's the coal, oil and gas conglomerate that lines their pockets. And of course, both parties serve the war machine because it's a sacred cow in America, and the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan will simply go on and on and on. The military alone prevents us from serving our domestic needs without running up a staggering debt. So in the end the Democrats, who are no agents of change, will have accomplished very little and piled up the national debt and deficit to frightening proportions, and that's the perfect lead-in to a Republican revival. It will start in Congress, perhaps as early as 2010, and end in 2016, when a Republican wins the presidency. It could come sooner, but Obama has so much charisma going for him that he probably will eek through in 2012. The Democrats are an utter fraud. They are incapable of doing anything meaningful or standing for principle. They haven't got any. They exist to elect themselves, not to serve the people.

The GOP may be 'controlled'

The GOP may be 'controlled' by its shrinking base, but that shrinking base maintains a disproportionately HUGE Megaphone on the America Political Stage because the Republican Party is much more in bed with and receiving the financial support from HUGE-Corporate America than Democrats, and in America, just a few, HUGE Corporations own, operate and exploit almost ALL MEDIA in America... Cable, Broadcast, Print, Internet and 'Entertainment'... There is no longer any FAIRNESS DOCTRINE in American Media, so hence, no requirement for Political Debate, and since the 1980's Congresses and Presidents have gone on a Media Ownership Deregulation Bender to the point where we have gone from a few hundred diverse, separate owners of American Media down to now, where just a few Global Corporations control almost all media in America. With all that, think about this... Think about a Media Mogul who lets say, owns a 24/7 so-called Cable News Channel, Newspapers, Magazines, Book Publishing Companies, Radio Stations, Movie Studios, TV Production Companies, etc. What kid of power does that give that Media Mogul to 'Persuade'.. 'Motivate'.. 'Inform'...'MisInform'..'Sway'.. 'Anger'.. 'Pacify'..'Con... Reflect 'Reality' to American Citizens as a Board of Directors see fit..?... What does all this mean to Free Speech..? A Free Press..?... And one last Question in the age of The Corporate-Media-Mogul Owned American Media---> What Liberal Media..?... So..., Welcome to the era of 'foisted' outrage over issues which would otherwise have vast, overwhelming Public Support... and Foisted Support for issues like Tea Parties which would otherwise go unattended except by the 'Stars of Foisterism'......

WHY DO WE HAVE A TWO PARY

WHY DO WE HAVE A TWO PARY SYSTEM...?... I would bet that its the only thing the two Parties in 'Our Foisted' Two Party System regularly collude on wholeheartedly is to keep all other Parties from the 'PARTY'..., as in--- They are deliberately kept off the National stage and out of all the Debates..., So, Again... WHY DO WE HAVE A TO PARTY SYSTEM..? There's nothing in the Constitution that says WE are to have a Two Party System of Government...Both Parties are Corporate Owned... And, If The Democrats have basically become a 'Get-Re-elected' Machine and the Republicans have become nothing more than a Brand Name that keeps getting Hijacked by ever Harder Rightwingnuts who seek to RULE the Nation from a ''Minority Dominating the Majority'' Position with a Divine-Like Attitude that-- 'It Is Wrtitten' .... THEN---- Why do WE keep them in power..?... Really... Why do We..?... What do We the People get out of a CORPORATE OWNED GOVERNMENT besides what Corporations want..?.. Wait and see what happens to Health Care Reform... It will be to the benefit of CORPORATIONS far and away above anything for the Citizens of America...

I wish some of you anonymous

I wish some of you anonymous would use a "handle" or pen name when you post. I'm going to be quoting some of the great comments here and would like to give credit.

Firestorms, tornadoes and

Firestorms, tornadoes and rising tides may soon be interpreted as Revelations come real as our planet rebels against the abuse of energy magnates and as maggots that suck the life out of its deadening carcass wriggle for more marketable puss. Then the evangelicals backed by the free market energy providers and touting their "told you so" religious capitalistic zeal will appear and appeal like more than just profits. Perfect environment for "Terminator" GOP clones. See California now.

Right wing Neocons like

Right wing Neocons like Huckabee and faux Neocons like Gingrich are giving the Bible a bad name. Just as women like Ms. Palin give women a bad name.

I agree with the people who

I agree with the people who pointed out that, while the Republican Party only accounts for about 25% of the populace, the opinions of their base account for an overwhelming majority of what we see and hear on TV and radio, or read in most of our newspapers. This is one case where I think the internet has actually improved the world we live in. We've finally seen an emergence of a public forum for all political viewpoints (provided you look past the Yahoo/AP headlines). In response to those who are always complaining about our "two-party system". We don't have a two-party system and other countries don't have a multi-party system either. It's just that we have an electoral process that starts with primaries and ends with a general election to determine the winner. This process favors the establishment of two main parties. So called third party candidates are never vetted as much as Democrats and Republicans, so the general public sees them as johny-come-latelys and doesn't trust them as much during the general election. In other countries, primaries are unnecessary. What they do is have everyone compete in a general election and then have a run-off for the top two candidates. We need to adopt the same system. Maybe in one election there would be two Republicans competing in the final run-off election. Although it's very unlikely that extremism would ever be rewarded like that. There would be more divergence than there is now between the available parties. In the general election, which would be like a national primary, no one's vote would be thrown away because they'd have a second chance to vote for the lesser of two evils in the run-off.

I'm a Christian and active

I'm a Christian and active in politics. The first thing I did in the Ray-gun years was to change my party affiliation to 'D'.

Let’s not let them have us

Let’s not let them have us arguing about religion. Christian or not, we all have our morals and they are fairly consistent. It is obvious, even with Obama, that ‘We the People’ are getting the short end of the stick in this country year after year and nothing ever changes. We ALL realize something needs to change. That the voice of ‘the people’ is never heard above the money and corruption of corporate lobbying of our so called ‘elected officials’ is an understatement. Neither party represents or even cares about the plight of the common individual voter beyond manipulation and control, and never dares focus on the issues that that we all find common ground on. Both parties seek to divide us as to perpetuate a ruling elite that does NOT include the voice ‘of the People’. Sure they both claim to have their different ideologies, and to some extent do, but behind closed doors (which is just about all the time), they are the exact same. ‘We the people’ are being ‘scammed’ between the two and a third party does not stand a chance. So how do ‘We the People’ change this peacefully since they never will? Since practically all of us want change, why don’t we start a movement for change ourselves? Let’s call it the ‘Peaceful American Revolution’. Since the dems are really no better, but the repubs have caused great damage to our Country lately, and have threatened our Constitution (check out the ‘Bill of Rights’ on Wikipedia, 5 of 10 have been violated in some way), I for one, will take a vow to never ever vote for a rupub again.... (even though I am currently registered repug)....never. If we all do this for several elections, they will be eliminated. Another party will emerge, and then we can do the same thing to the dems if necessary. This two party scam needs to end. Divided, ‘We the People’.... are slaves.

Hey! I am surprised that

Hey! I am surprised that one of us anonymous souls posted a note that: {Obama} was confused about which hospital he was born in. Gee Whiz, I don't expect him to remember that himself! At the age of 69 I do not remember the name of the Colorad hospital I was born in, although I remember the name of the small Colorado town. Luckily it wasn't Denver because there have always been multiple hospitals there. Let's all focus on meaningful issues and not the idiocy some folks dredge up to undermine good men and women who are willing to run for public office! old gal

Responding to "Religion and

Responding to "Religion and politics should never mix:" To be fair, more people have died at the hands of secular, pagan and/or atheistic, Marxist regimes than in all the religious wars in history combined. I submit at least 15 million dead under Hitler and the European war he spawned and up to 60 million dead Russians under Stalin (read Solzhenitsyn). I agree with much of the sentiment against inflaming the culture wars in America but let's be fair: most conservative Christians are NOT gun-toting, hate-mongering bigots. They/we have strong convictions and ultimately consider themselves citizens of heaven as well as the USA but are committed to fairness and the rule of law.

Hitler was baptized a Roman

Hitler was baptized a Roman Catholic as an infant.. served as an altar boy as a teen.. he has many quotes in history Books about Christianity.. and Stalin - he grew up Orthodox.. but was kicked out. I was the one that wrote "Religion and Politics" I don't mean to come off that I am against Christians either - when I say religion -- I mean .. every single religion there is.. there are always going to be extremists in some form or another.. in any religion- and to allow Religion into Government .. any government.. is incredibly dangerous.

It's more than just

It's more than just pandering to the religious base that is destroying the political power of the Republican party, it's the pervasive mindset that somehow intelligent = evil. That the well-educated are fuddy-headed elites who can't possibly understand what life is like for the boots on the ground, that having the wit to appreciate complexity and nuance in a situation is somehow dangerous. Even Mitt Romney--who is not cut from the same cloth as, say, Huckabee, "average Joe" G.W. Bush, or the like--fell into that trap. While it sounds good on paper, it makes for horrible policy. Basing one's political standpoint on increasingly reactionary religion and one-dimensional shrieking makes for horrible policy.

(The name is sarcastic - it

(The name is sarcastic - it was applied to me by Janet Napolitano.) This article, as are many in this publication, is actually rather brilliant. It very effectively distorts reality. The Republican Party does NOT contain the majority of those who believe the 2nd Amendment is still relevant, that abortion is not a good policy, that true free market economics beats a government run economy, and that God still matters. Oh, there are still some of those in the Republican Party, but I suspect a much larger majority of us have opted out of the Republican Party because the Party was led far away from its roots. George W. (or his father) are NOT representative of what many believe should be (and once was) the Republican Party. The article does a subtly "nice" job of marginalizing the large conservative population in the US by falsely claiming they're concentrated in that 30% figure. Sorry to disappoint, but it's far greater than that. For everyone claiming to be a Republican, I know at least an equal number - and I suspect it's much more - who consider the GOP to have left them, and they have no desire to waste their time trying to fix it from within. Those who are, are a relatively vocal minority of the Party, and the media boosts their appearance of prominence as a means of marginalizing them. If they were truly a major force within the Party, a little common sense would certainly show that John McCain would not have been the nominee. Watch out, progressives - don't believe your own media or you'll be ill-prepared and end up where you've (temporarily) marginalized your opposition.

Dear RadRtWngExtremist, The

Dear RadRtWngExtremist, The first two lines of your response say it all. There is no hope for the gop without distorting reality. It is your God. Perhaps we've had enough. Oh, and keep praising the distortion of reality!

Right-wing extremism will

Right-wing extremism will always appeal to the disaffected and those looking for meaning in their lives. It provides a structure for those feeling overwhelmed with chaos, it provides a greater cause to identify with for those feeling insecure about their place in the world and it feeds the lost what to think and say. Right-wing extremism provides the anchor for young folks feeling adrift in the universe, just as it did in Nazi Germany.

A John Little's post I

A John Little's post I heartily condone! Carter was a born-again and so is my husband. The problems we are having as a country cannot be blamed entirely on religion. Think of the flaws at the dawn of our Republic: property-owning white men could vote, women and anyone enslaved and transported here from Africa had virtually no legal rights, and as for the property rights of Native Americans...say what? These are just some of the weaknesses that have been addressed by succeeding generations by our rather inspired Constitution and the march of time. These flaws were perpetuated by our Founding Fathers, most of whom were not Christians. There will never be a simple solution to the proper running of government. If it's human, it's messy and bound by the times.

The problem here is that

The problem here is that Christianity IS paganism. Most any newspaper article explains this every Christmas, Easter, etc. All of the Christian holidays are nothing but their pagan counterparts rehabilitated with new names made to deceive people into thinking they come from the bible. Even the pope has recently demanded that the churches quit using the name of the creator. The scripture nowhere commands the worship of any god. The whole thing is bogus. Do a google search on Hesus Krishna the god cooked up at the Council of Nicea by Constantine in 325ad. That is where the name Jesus Christ came from. The first commandment commands that you shall have no gods. Look it up in a diaglot.
