Why Have We Stopped Talking About Guns?

You know by now that in Washington, DC, on Wednesday, an elderly white supremacist and anti-Semite named James W. von Brunn allegedly walked into the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum with a .22-caliber rifle and killed security guard Stephen T. Johns before being brought down himself. He's 88 years old, with a long record of hatred and paranoid fantasies about the Illuminati and a Global Zionist state. How bitter the bile that has curdled for so many decades.

You will know, too, of the recent killing, while ushering at his local church, of Dr. George Tiller, one of the few doctors in the country still performing late term abortions. Sadly, this case was proof that fatal violence works. His family has announced that his Wichita, Kansas, clinic will not be reopened.

You may be less familiar with the June 1st shootings in an army recruiting office in Little Rock that killed one soldier and wounded another. The suspect in question is an African-American Muslim convert who says he acted in retaliation for US military activity in the Middle East.

Soon, however, these terrible deeds will be forgotten, as are already the three policemen killed by an assault weapon in Pittsburgh; the four policemen killed in Oakland, California; the 13 people gunned down in Binghamton, New York; the 10 in an Alabama shooting spree; five in Santa Clara, California; the eight dead in a North Carolina, nursing home. All during this year alone.

There is much talk about hate talk; hate crimes against blacks, whites, immigrants, Muslims, Jews; about violence committed in the name of bigotry or religion. But why don't we talk about guns?

We're arming ourselves to death. Even as gunshots ricocheted around the country, an amendment allowing concealed weapons in national parks snuck into the popular credit card reform bill. Another victory for the gun lobby, to sounds of silence from the White House.

Paul Helmke, president of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, wrote - just days before the Holocaust Museum incident - that "rather than propose concrete action that makes it harder for dangerous people to get firearms - while still respecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners - all Washington can seem to muster after high-profile shootings are 'thoughts and prayers' for the victims and their families.

"For his part, the President has also included sincere expressions of 'deep sadness' at these tragic losses - though without any call to change any of our policies to prevent those losses.'

Yet, as a presidential candidate, Obama pledged "our determination to do whatever it takes to eradicate this violence from our streets, from our schools, from our neighborhoods and our cities. That is our duty as Americans."

The fact is, neither party will stand up to the National Rifle Association, the best known front group for the arms merchants. In Virginia, just across the Potomac River from the Holocaust Museum, this week's Democratic primary for governor was won by state legislator R. Creigh Deeds, a man who supports allowing concealed weapons in restaurants that serve alcohol and opposes limiting handgun purchases to one a month.

After Wednesday's shooting, a conservative organization immediately offered those of us in the media a chance to interview the founder of "Jews for the Preservation of Firearms Ownership," whose expertise, it was said, is in helping people understand why gun control doesn't belong in a civilized society.

The e-mail went on to say, "Your audience will appreciate [his] non nonsense common sense talk that will make them wonder why anyone wants to ban guns in the first place."

Thanks, but no thanks. And no thanks to his counterparts among Christians and Muslims who use every violent shedding of blood to try to promote the worship of guns. Guns don't kill people, they say. People kill people. True. People kill people - with guns.

So let the faithful of every persuasion keep their guns for hunting and skeet, for trap and target practice, for collecting. They can even have a permit for a gun to protect their business or home, even though it's 22 times more likely to shoot a member of the family (including suicides) than an intruder.

But please, there are already some 200 million, privately owned firearms in America. Every year there are 30,000 gun deaths and in some years more than 400,000 non-fatal, gun-related assaults. The next time someone wades through a pool of blood to sidle up and champion the preservation of firearms, can't we just say, no thanks?

    Enough's enough.

Just with the election of a

Just with the election of a democrat to the White House, gun owners freaked out with the thought that Obama was going to take away their guns. It is a totally untrue fear. But just in case, they were going to buy more guns and ammunition. A friend of mine in NY, a retired New York State trooper went out to buy a new gun which was available, but he had to check 12 gun stores before he was able to buy 1 box of ammunition and he had to pay 10x the price he usually paid. There having been a run on ammunition, it is in very short supply. This worries me. Who do they think they are going to be fighting?

Mr. Moyers, Thanks for

Mr. Moyers, Thanks for bringing this to light eloquently and firmly in the aftermath of another senseless tragedy. M. C.

Gun restrictions wouldn't

Gun restrictions wouldn't have prevented a single shot in the cited examples. What's causing people to shoot other people? Fear. Fear is popular, and solving problems with violence is a national addiction; war is a modern American addiction. The media created this fearful and trembling America. Media must soothe it away. The common person on the street must not believe in violent solutions to his/ her fears.

-- while still respecting

-- while still respecting the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners --- Why respect the right to kill? There is always a more intelligent way to solve a problem than to kill, or hit, or bomb somebody! Remove the guns, and problems will be solved in other ways.

The history of gun control

The history of gun control is as old as guns themselves. Yet, the issue that should be addressed isn't gun limitations, but why, for the past 8 years, has fear and hate become such a very strong issue? If we believe in Christian values, were is the love and respect? What has our leadership, either political or religious, done to lead us down the path of hate and fear? The truth is that weapons of any kind, be they gun, car, broom and belt, have no emotion.

Will some one explain to me

Will some one explain to me why the country is obsessed with the murder of Dr Tiller and Mr. Johns, but the murder at a Army recruiting station of soldier has been relegated to the back pages from the get go. Something is wrong when a soldiers murder is ignored and others take the front pages for days. Shame on all of us. Cars kill more people than

Cars kill more people than guns. So by your logic, we should ban cars. Seriously, think about what you are saying. And while you may refuse to read what Jews have to say about gun laws, don't ignore the history: Where governments disarm the population, genocide follows. In "Lethal Laws: Gun Control Is the Key to Genocide," the authors demonstrated that these nations that perpetrated genocide had chosen a victim population which was disarmed. If the intended victims were not already gun-free, then the murderous governments first got rid of the guns before they began the killing. If the Patriot Act and Military Commissions Act don't scare you; if torture and extraordinary rendition don't scare you; if bankster bailouts while 1 in 3 loses their homes don't scare, then by all means, disarm the population and watch what happens. "To disarm the people (is) the best and most effectual way to enslave them..." George Mason, author of the 1776 Virginia Bill of Rights

The dialogue lately has been

The dialogue lately has been over the rise of rightwing fear & hate mongering against the progressive movement in this county. Surely you must realise that any talk of banning guns on any level with amplify and validate the already paranoia rantings of those who say that Obama is going to abridge the 2 Amendment. You will feed into that fear by trying to take their guns away. I believe gun registration laws to be necessary... but don't forget that when they disarmed the people of Chile back in the early 70's...when the gov't of Salvadore Allende passed a gun ban, he was left alone and vulnerable to the military coup. The common people powerless to stop them. And thousands died because of that.

Bill, Haven't you heard

Bill, Haven't you heard "guns don't kill people, People kill People" or " if guns were outlawed then only outlaws would have guns" These clever sayings are promoted by those who make money from gun related violence and those Politicans who receive money from the gun lobby. They should be just as respoinsible for these senseless killings. Shame on our politicans!

Extremely big fan of Bill

Extremely big fan of Bill Moyers. Always have been. But he needs to let this one rest. I, as a liberal who for the most part votes Democrat, am grateful that our party is no longer saddled as the gun-control party. Definitely cost us one election (2000) that resulted in what will likely be remembered as the darkest eight years of this century (let's hope). Probably cost us the '04 election as well. And it's not just about political success and expediency. Gun bans will not keep guns out of the hands of those determined to obtain them for nefarious purposes. It's a plain, indisputable fact that gets brushed under the rug every time someone makes this plea for "gun sanity."

Hallelujah - at last someone

Hallelujah - at last someone has been listening to me screaming at my TV ("What about those guns - why doesn't someone say something about the guns!"). Thank you, Mr. Moyers. You've restored my faith that there are still some sane people out there. Now how can we get the rest to listen. How about enlisting the TV talking heads to start chatting it up - if they dare. Again, thank you.

WHY AREN'T AMERICANS TALKING

WHY AREN'T AMERICANS TALKING ABOUT GUN CONTROL? EASY ANSWER BECAUSE AMERICA IS ONE VERY SICK SOCIETY CHRISTIAN IN NAME ONLY NOT SUBSTANCE

Because the public is

Because the public is AGAINST gun control: http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/04/08/gun.control.poll/index.html

Interesting article Bill &

Interesting article Bill & Michael. I always enjoy reading your pieces. Though I am not a member of any gun rights group, and neither do I hunt I do own weapons for self-protection. I have them secured in my home, and only on rare occasions do they leave. If & when the shit hits the fan (as I fear it will) I will feel more secure having them. It would be interesting to see how many gun-related crimes are committed (including multiple offenses by the same person) in relation to the numbers of guns out there. My guess would be that most crimes are committed by only a few (relatively speaking), if you discount crimes committed by law enforcement, and the military. It is true... if the infraction (whether it be a crime against others, or suicide) wern't performed by a gun it would be committed by another weapon. It is also true (as you agree to in this article) that guns don't kill people- people do. Likewise, cars don't kill people either- people do. Do we outlaw cars? Please take away the bad guys (and extremist's) guns... but don't take away mine.

Ammo is selling out at

Ammo is selling out at all the stores as fast as they can ship it in. No depression in this business.... While I could see limiting clip sizes and a few minor things like that, the simple FACT is that private gun ownership will never go away. It is the forever determinate reason why our country will remain free. Obama will NEVER try to take away the people's guns. It is the pack of criminals that infest our senate, both repub and dems, who would like to disarm and crush the American people. Vote the incumbent criminals out IN THE PRIMARIES.

Congress, the NRA (National

Congress, the NRA (National Rifle Association) and concerned citizens have an obligation to participate in an open discussion about how to protect against violence in our cities. Some limits and oversight must be established. Surely, Constitutional protections must apply to potential victims as well as to gun owners. Where is the fine line? The courts may have to decide, but open discussion should not be avoided or suppressed in any way.

Perhaps we could define the

Perhaps we could define the word "guns" with more precision. There are guns for hunting, collecting and various recreational purposes; there are guns for self-protection; and then there are weapons of war. Do we really need for every household to protect itself with a military arsenal? Could we have different rules for different classes of weapons?

Bill, I love you very much,

Bill, I love you very much, but grow up, and start preferring liberty to government intrusion on individual behavior. At 60, I'm a lifelong liberal and left-winger, and I was recently robbed at gunpoint in the elevator of the Days Inn on Connecticut Avenue in D.C. I can see no reason to believe that any of the proposed gun control measures would have prevented that, or any other violence, in DC or elsewhere in the U.S. Living is dangerous; indeed, it's always fatal. Living in a free society is more dangerous than living in a nanny-state (or in a corporation-state like Singapore). But is that really "living"? I prefer liberty. Patrick Henry had it right. The advocacy of gun control by liberals and left-wingers gives us all a bad reputation. I'm a liberal left-winger precisely BECAUSE I'm more interested in liberty than security. I recognize incremental enslavement when I see it. Gun control, like corporatism, *is* incremental slavery -- to an increasingly fascist state. Don't be on the wrong side of this, Bill and Michael. We need you. Understand in your guts that those who would control the ownership of guns by the exercise of state power are the enemies of liberty and personal responsibility. (Just exactly like those who would control access to abortion services, "controlled substances", sexual services, and information about what our government is doing. Liberty is *always* the better alternative and the higher value.)

Of course if you take away

Of course if you take away the guns, the hate will all vanish. It seems we are talking about exactly the right thing, the hate. Then we need to move on to the causes for the hate. Fear. Fear of poverty and desperation. Overpopulation relative to the economy and societies ability to guarantees access to resources at the individual level are the sources of fear, which spawns hate, a terrible tool. A tool more far more deadly and dangerous than guns. Hate can be manufactured without guns, but guns are fairly inert without hate. Oh, there will be accidents, but shall we look at automobiles first, or obesity? If talking about guns leads us to the central issue, hate, by all means have at it. But thus far, talk about guns does not decrease fear or hate or bigotry, quite the opposite. In the US, people are afraid they'll be wiped out by some medical expense, or that their savings for retirement will be wiped out, or that their job will be wiped out, or that they'll end up on wiped out the street. Life is cheap, it can be wiped out easily. Have we given up on making our lives more durable that we must focus on a sideshow issue like guns? It is simply that fear and hate do not make good articles or news-bites. Let's start by talking more about serious health care for all, and not get distracted by guns.

Oh, and for the cliche

Oh, and for the cliche slingers who instinctively [I say this because no real thought is involved] spit out the response "guns don't kill people, etc" I would say that PEOPLE WITH GUNS kill more people than people without guns do. And the argument about cars is silly. First, you have to prove you are able to operate a car safely to get a license to operate one [which can be taken away]. Second, people who die from cars rarely are killed intentionally. It usually happens by accident when cars are being used for some other socially beneficial purpose. The same cannot be said of handguns or guns generally. Guns do not promote productivity, provide transportation of goods or services. Guns are more like Viagra. They are devices to boost the ego more than providing any real social benefit. And when used improperly, they can kill unsuspecting and innocent people. Guns are not bad or good in themselves, they are just dangerous. In the hands of a warped mind, like someone who actually believes that they NEED a gun in the house for protection and that it is not a danger, guns become both dangerous and deadly. These people, like many who post here do not even realize that they are the problem. The argument that everyone needs a gun and that only criminals abuse gun possession assumes a mindset that all of our neighbors are potential "criminals" that we need to protect ourselves from. This is untrue unless the mass hysteria is created to make most people believe that they should hate and distrust their neighbor. It is not pollyana to say that the world we live in is largely a product of our own choices and actions. Live by the gun, die by the gun.

200,000 dead each year from

200,000 dead each year from improperly prescribed medicine. Folks, I think we have bigger problems in the USA than we want to admit including the police state that has been waiting to hatch, guided by false pretense and media manipulation, and yes Bill, you are part of that bought and sold propaganda enterprise. Let's talk about freedom and where it disappeared.

Thanks Bill Moyer- I was

Thanks Bill Moyer- I was thinking the same thing myself. It baffles me why the NRA has so much clout, quite literally, since the gun proliferation they encourage in this country kills people by extremists and aids suicide.

Why do so many of you wish

Why do so many of you wish to remain anonymous? Cars kill people assuredly but no one or very few use their car to deliberately kill someone. Imagine trying to drive even a Smart Car into the Holocaust Museum to kill people. Yes, if someone wants to kill an individual but has no gun that prospective killer can use a knife or baseball bat (or car), but the killer has to confront the victim in close quarters. How many people would an 88 year old have been able to kill armed only with a knife? The NRA and gun lovers not only misinterpret the 2nd Amendment, they use faulty reasoning and appeal to fear of the unknown assailant. If a person without a gun wanted to kill me but had a knife, etc., I would at least stand some chance of getting away or wresting the weapon from the assailant, up to the limitations of my 77 year old body. How long do we have to put up with the idiocy of the NRA and gun owners?

When guns are outlawed only

When guns are outlawed only the government will have guns.

Why don't we talk about

Why don't we talk about guns? It's been talked to death I suppose. The gun is just another tool that can be used or abused - machetes and baseball bats are also lethal. I have little interest in guns, but home invasions are fairly common here and I am an old man - little as I would care to fire a gun in my house, it might be my only chance.

This country has paid a

This country has paid a horrendous price for an archaic dangling participle. The second amendment was composed without the benefit of a grammar text, and its meaning left dangling. It has now been officially interpreted, by the Supreme Court, so that the ambiguity is declared resolved and is arbitrarily enshrined in law. But hey, shooting 'em down is the only method of population control that the extremist fringe will allow, when abstinence fails against nature, and who else gets to call the shots in American debate? And who else has the money to buy both Congress and the whole administration? So the next "moose" shot in a national park may be a bipedal vacationer. OOPS!

I don't believe we have

I don't believe we have stopped talking about guns at all.We are spoon fed daily about negative aspects of firearms.I think the message these guys are trying to convey is "Why have we stopped talking about gun control".Let's get real and stop beating around the bush. The fact is gun ownership is a constitutional right and not a privilege that can nor should be regulated, like you would regulate, say, drivers licenses or fishing licenses.Do we pick and choose what constitutional amendments we are to follow, I ask?We always hear nonstop about the victims of gun violence. How about the people who use firearms successfully defending themselves, their families and their property against criminals, who could care less about getting a permit. Are these stories in the mainstream media?I think not.Do not be fooled!Dictators in the past have drooled over gun control.Firearms are what keeps the dictators (including rogue governments)in check and the criminals at bay!

"The strongest reason for

"The strongest reason for the people to retain the right to keep and bear arms is, as a last resort, to protect themselves against tyranny in government." - Thomas Jefferson

The point of gun control is

The point of gun control is not to seize all the guns n the country, it is to try to turn down the heat by reducing the number of guns in circulation. Honestly, how could anyone think that they are going to be safer in a bar where people are allowed to carry concealed handguns (or any of the other crazy ideas mentioned in the essay)? I think you would be crazy to go into that bar, and personally I would avoid that part of town. ps. I own some guns, and I am glad I have them, and I am afraid that someday I may wish I had more. But only because the right wing crazies are arming themselves to the teeth and want everyone to have guns. I imagine its so they can justify a "shoot first" philosophy. After all, if everyone can have a gun, them anyone might be carrying one at any time, and so if you feel threatened by someone, you could go ahead and shoot them, and then claim you feared for your life because you figured they probably had a gun, because, of course, everybody must be packing heat all the time, right? Gun crazy.

Thank you, Bill Moyers, for

Thank you, Bill Moyers, for saying what so many think. My question: SURELY statistics exist that would support a change in the gun control laws of this country. Seems to me that fear is all controlling when it comes to guns; and I don't for the life of me understand why people need guns...except for sport. If we're going to put medical records on line, can't we put names of gun owners and their guns on line and monitor the types purchased. We are killing each other at an alarming rate; and hate and fear seems to be winning over knowledge and reason. The thought of concealed weapons on a college campus or at any public place makes me quake. Too many people are just too hot headed...and a gun seems to make killing that much easier. How do our gun deaths compare to other countries...and what are their rules/laws?

Our "right" to have guns and

Our "right" to have guns and our "right" to use them when and how we see fit -- even if wrongly and criminally -- is about assuring a "right" to individuals that in the end the ruling class and the governement it owns must ensure exists without doubt, restriction, or limitation for itself. Whether domestically or internationally, this nation's owners and rulers want to be certain that not now nor ever is their ability to use force as needed -- even if wrongly and criminally -- ever challenged. The NRA and other such organizations are there to ensure that the virus of limitations on the "right" to weapons is never allowed to flourish, lest the nation be infected by the insanity of a belief that there is a better way than that of the gun. The American way is the gun, is now and has always been. And for the sake of the defense industry, the gun industry, the hate industry, the mercenary/security company industry, etc., the gun must continue to American way. To restrict the gun at home is seen by many as the end of the American way and the end of the U.S. prerogative towards violence in the world.

This is probably a trivial

This is probably a trivial point, but the bullet hole in the above photo was made by a .38 fired by the security guards, not by one of the .22's that Von Brunn apparently used.

Early, when they assumed

Early, when they assumed power the Nazi government instituted the death penalty for gun ownership by Jews. Enough said.

Recently a convicted

Recently a convicted arsonist in California was given a capitol sentence for a string of fires that claimed lives along the way. While I'm sketchy on the details is it now reasonable to think in terms of outlawing matches? Many are the reasons for our gun crazed society and yet I have to tip my hat to our constitutional fathers for the second amendment. Naturally lone madmen on a killing spree make us question the sanity of our gun policies yet their damage done still pales compared to the tyranny of an unchecked government. Rarely has there been so little accountability to the people of this nation than now and the citizenry has responded to this reality by arming themselves like never before. Screening gun recipients is a reasonable precaution but outright bans on the masses smacks of totalitarianism.

You want to take guns away

You want to take guns away from the good people, for their protection of course. The bad ones will love that. I can also see Honest Joe buying a gun illegally off the street because he knows most cops will not respond in time to protect his family, especially in the rural area. You use some tragic examples to justify your belief, to strip the freedoms away from good people. Be sure you write a piece saying the guns should be taken away the rich, the Hollywood crowd, the elitist in Washington who think they are too big to fail and, of course, the gangs. Make sure they turn theirs' in.

We don't talk about guns

We don't talk about guns because gun control is an issue that loses elections for Democrats. Regardless of one's particular viewpoint on gun control, for Democrats it's an issue that loses elections if pushed, while gaining few swing votes. Almost all of the gun control proponents are already in the Democrat camp. So what the Dems stand to gain from pushing gun control in the real world is lost elections. Personally, my perspective as a non-NRA, social libertarian, independent is that I trust the government neither to protect me from crime, nor to have a monopoly on legal guns. One thing that keeps the nascent police state from conducting even more no-knock raids is the prospect that someone might be waiting with firepower on the other side of the door. In my opinion until if and when the government becomes more civil and civilized, that's good. Make no mistake, I haven't voted for any Republican candidate in over a quarter century. That one vote was for a candidate for sheriff back in my old home town. Mostly I vote Democratic, but the gun control issue isn't one that has guided any of my votes.

Once upon a time in America

Once upon a time in America the "government" thought they could stop Americans from owning, or using alcohol. Alcohol was evil and it broke up homes and killed people. The result was prohibition. We all know how well that worked...it didn't solve the problem, it enlarged the problem. Criminals managed to provide alcohol to the people who were willing to pay the price. The same holds true to outlawing gun ownership. Maybe to some this is a poor analogy but it is close enough. Getting rid of guns by the government will not end the murders and killing in America. Prohibiting the owning of guns is only a band-aid to societies problem of hate. I would love to outlaw hate but that is a foolish notion that is far in the future. God Bless America!

I was a police officer for

I was a police officer for two years. After deciding to pursue a different line of work, I sold my service revolver to a fellow officer. It was my way of beating a sword into a plowshare. I don't own any guns at all now. During that time period I observed that guns in the hands of "law-abiding citizens" are more likely to be used in a suicide or domestic disturbance, or to kill someone - often a child - accidentally than to protect them during a home break-in or other crime. Often having a gun brings more pain and suffering to the average citizen than not having one in any given situation. This issue begs for calm and reasonable discussion, not a knee-jerk reaction. Look at the statistics, read people's stories. I laugh when I hear people say that they could have prevented this or that tragedy if they had been armed. Police officers, in spite of all their training, suddenly can't hit the broad side of a barn when the bullets start to fly. And Joe Citizen thinks he can do better in the heat of the moment? We don't need to compound a tragedy by having untrained people firing guns, resulting in more injury and death to innocent bystanders.

No other civilized country

No other civilized country in the world has the access to guns that our citizens have. I firmly believe that only police and sportsmen or women should have guns. Guns are used to kill other people in an act of violence - that's it, folks. 30,000 people a year are killed in gun violence in our country compared to numbers like less than 100 in all other democracies. What does this say about the easy access to weapons in the USA? Any fool or mentally ill person can get a gun and kill family, friends or strangers - this is America, land where we are all free to kill and be killed. I am sick to death of hearing about these senseless murders. Fifty years ago my grandfather was killed in a robbery at his little grocery store so I too have been a victim of this violence. Get rid of the guns! JMK

radline9 got the next

radline9 got the next question! Who do they think they are going to be fighting? You and me; that's who! The crazies are getting ready to kill us all! They have lost their minds and the proof is in the paragraph explaining the State Trooper you spoke of. 10 X the price for killing material they don't care ammo is actually cheap.

Where were all the news

Where were all the news reporter when the credit card bill was being considered ? ? ? I wonder what the response would have been from all the parents, and other reasonably minded individuals who might like to have been able to enjoy a 'gun free' and 'safe' stroll in a NATIONAL PARK ! THE MEDIUM IS THE MESSAGE. How can we give voice to our politicians IF WE DON"T GET THE MESSAGE.

I'm a proud liberal

I'm a proud liberal Democrat. I respectfully suggest that our nation needs only 3 gun laws: 1. No crazy persons may own a gun. 2. No one with a history of violence may own a gun. 3. Commit any crime with a gun and you will go away for a LONG time. Gun "control" doesn't work. Talk of gun "control" only costs our party votes and sends people to the other side.

This argument has been

This argument has been raging for many many years. It will not be resolved in the United States without the government becoming a domestic military supported government. Citizens will never give up their guns without a fight. Consider this: Guns have not always been available, but folks found a way to kill. Eliminating guns will never stop killing. Killing is a social issue that is out of control in the U.S., whether or not it is aided and abetted by the media and governmental propaganda and manipulation.

I have no guns, I've never

I have no guns, I've never had a gun, and I don't plan to buy a gun in the future, but I have nothing against others having guns to hunt, target shoot, etc. I had great fun when I was in scouts target shooting and my daughter and I did a biathlon many moons ago. But just like cars, boats, etc., I believe that all guns should all be registered and that owners should not be allowed to carry concealed weapons. I believe that the owners need to show that they've taken training on how to store and use them properly. At the same time, there are some varieties of guns that shouldn't be allowed to be owned by private owners; and I include in this category most of the weapons used by our armed forces and those of other countries (AK-47s, etc.). Those weapons are designed to kill humans, not squirrels, birds, or deer and it doesn't make sense to have them circulating on the streets. There seems to be a lot of paranoia about having guns in our houses to protect ourselves from the government or the "bad guys". I know there are a lot of bad guys out there and for the past eight years, I did worry about the two guys in the White House, but looking at the statistics, I think I will worry more about who's going to run into me in my car than having to protect myself in my house. Like everything, we need a sense of perspective and we need to practice common sense. I hope the run on ammunition and the recent spate of hate crimes is just a random jump on the graph of life and not an inflection point!!

Isn't it ironic that the

Isn't it ironic that the title of this column is "Why have we stopped talking about guns" and you refuse to talk about guns with a spokesman from JPFO? "....sidle up and champion the preservation of firearms, can't we just say, no thanks?" So, you want to eliminate firearms? That would be unconstitutional, illegal, unAmerican, unsafe and unwise.

Why can't professional

Why can't professional writers understand that "snuck" is right up there with "brang"? Such illiteracy is equivalent to the one rotten apple that spoils the barrel of them? I am all for tough gun control. The trouble is, it is not the guns or ammuniton, as the NRA has claimed all along. It is, rather, the culture of America--and the culture of the NRA and its members--which is to blame. It is so obvious that it appalls the sighted that the blind cannot see it. Moral absolutism and religious zeal are always destructive. Always, all ways; all ways, always.

anti gun people will make up

anti gun people will make up anything and say anything to strip us of our freedom. the fact is we loose more and more of our freedoms every day. anti gunners ignore facts that would clearly prove that it is not the average gun owner that commits crimes with guns look up the records of these people these people committing crimes with guns are usually life long law breakers!! ALOCHOAL AND DRUGS ARE ALSO USUALLY INVOLVED!!! why is this information always omitted??? ware i live most people own guns and hunt and it is rare for a crime to be comitted concerning fire arms but that dont matter to anti gun fanatics does it??? guns are not the problem the problem is letting the murders and rapes ts out of prison and encouraging violence and not doing enough to stop alcohol and drug use and abuse. if you are convicted of any violent or drug crime you should loose the right to own a fire arm and be sent to prison for 10 years every time they are caught in illegal possession of a fire arm. fire arms are not the problem the problem is criminals and criminals will kill weather it is with a gun or a knife or a bow or a club

A Few Thoughts... England

A Few Thoughts... England and Australia's gun ban has created a 40%+ gun crime wave. Mid day armed home invasions are increasing on the unarmed. Dr. Lott, to defend his gun control position, extensively researched firearm statistics. The result? His book: More Guns, Less Crime. He urges an armed society. Lt. Col. Dave Grossman and Gloria DeGaetano wrote Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill. How many makers/distributors of violent movies, videos, games, books, etc. have you called/boycotted to help end the violence? *Prescribed psychotropics are/were taken by virtually every illegal shooter.

I don't think guns should be

I don't think guns should be taken away..but I do think it should take more in obtaining a weapon other than being an adult. :) I grew up in a household of hunters, we respected guns, and as kids we never touched my dads gun ..that was taboo. I myself, hunted one time in my life.. shot a deer and promptly threw up..never touching another gun. I think firearm safety should be a must--we have driving lessons .. that are mandatory.. and guns are just as deadly in the wrong hands- kids should absolutely not be able to use a gun unless a parent is at their side. Housing a gun - there should be specific rules - they should be under lock and key in homes.. and that rule should be enforced and checked out in each case..period, no exceptions. You will never ever get guns out of the criminal hands.. if guns are made unlawful - law abiding citizens would def. hand theirs in..but do you think criminals would ?

A group I belong to has been

A group I belong to has been talking to our legislators and the public for month to try to prevent the open carry of loaded weapons, and concealed weapons, in National Parks. We know it is far more dangerous than the rule that guns must be unloaded and out of reach. One NRA "statistic" bothers me most in relation to this absurd regulation change/override. We kill 30,000 people a year with guns, according to the NRA 1.4 million crimes are stopped annually by gun owners. My question on this is: If true, why aren't two or three hundred thousand additional "bad guys" being killed by those "protective" guns? Should a bear while in a panic with a pistol, and you ARE LUNCH! Violent crime is already extremely low in our National Parks, this new rule will likely change that.

Had that shooter in Athens,

Had that shooter in Athens, Georgia, last month, used his fists instead of two guns, it would it have been another angry husband with broken knuckles, instead of leaving behind two orphaned children, as well an entire region in shock. It does make a difference. I have never owned a gun, but have been angry enough at times to want to shoot somoene with a gun. Had I had the gun, maybe I might have tried it, and ended up just like that Professor in Athens. Ditto for drinking under the age of 21. As any 18 year old might think it a stupid law, now I think it a smart one, in fact maybe the age not set high enough, because that law kept me out of bars and poolhalls at that early an age, and in school where I had more business. It is true that arsonists use matches, but one deterrent to committing arson is that a convicted arsonist will never find a landlord willing to sign a lease with him, which is the one thing keeping a lot of people from setting fires, but is there any other deterrent to handling a gun than a murder rap?

as long as we live in a

as long as we live in a society that encourages torture, that classifies veterans as terrorists, that allows domestic violence victims to lose custody to their abusers, that allows violent criminals to serve less time than a pothead head gets for his 3rd joint, Thank You, but I'll be keeping mine. The problem is not the weapons, but the total and utter lack of empathy and ethics in government and the system as it stands. Maybe we should look at the causes of violence, not the tools used to commit it.

I totally understand people

I totally understand people not wanting to lose their guns.. I would never want to take their guns away either but.. when their rights.. start infringing on my right to live without fear.. then I tend to get a bit huffy. I was the one that wrote I grew up around guns in a hunting household. As an adult.. I do NOT like guns at all. I don't want to be around them. I don't want to see them. I don't want to hear them discharged .. nothing .. so where is the common ground ? I was once married to a man - who loved guns. He worshiped them - and he had me living in fear of my life because of them ..,, his specialty was his handgun..he would sit and polish while he was in a drunken stupor. I remember distinctly on more than one occasion taking my tiny infant son, and we would sit in the closet.. waiting for him to pass out go to bed or blow his head off. All he had to do to obtain those handguns.. was fork over the cash.

You people and your "lost

You people and your "lost freedoms." Really? I don't think you have any idea what losing freedom really means. Am I the only one that noticed, "let the faithful of every persuasion keep their guns for hunting and skeet, for trap and target practice, for collecting. They can even have a permit for a gun to protect their business or home"? I'm not convinced you understand the nature of the problem here. For example, explain to me the difference between buying an assault rifle and buying marijuana: one is designed for efficiently dispatching human beings; the other is illegal. If illegalizing gun ownership would usher in an age of Prohibition-style gang warfare, why bother?

double license, triple

double license, triple train, 21+ to _handle_ any firearm, like any motor vehicle. criminals only have guns in this country because 'law-abiding gun-owners' have so many sitting around unwatched or irresponsibly protected, locked cocked and ready to blow us into a dense fog of civil-liberty manipulation. know your enemy indeed. Enjoy your guns but stop being so materialistically attached to a adapted tool - even the phasers in star trek can stun....

When guns are banned and

When guns are banned and people start killing each other with sticks are we going to ban sticks? Hospitals kill around 100,000.00 people a year with there mistakes, should we ban them? Governments have killed more people thru out history then any other weapon perhaps we should ban them! Banning, passing laws(over 2 million and counting) restricting, & illegalizing do not work. Criminals dont follow the laws, thats why they are CRIMINALS!! And how dare you try to take away my right of self-defence ! Alright I am starting to get mad, yet me leave you w/ two quotes please read them and THINK about them " Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve nether liberty or safety" Benjamin Franklin " Necessity is the plea for every infringement of human liberty; it is the argument of tyrants; it is the creed of slaves." William Pitt

I am a gun owner, avid

I am a gun owner, avid shooter and a member of the NRA. The 2nd Amendment was created to protect the states from the over extension of power by the newly formed federal government not to allow anyone to have any weapon they wanted centuries later. In 1781 no one was trying to take away a colonists deer rifle! So let's get real! People should be allowed to own guns to protect themselves and to use for all sporting purposes. As a member of the NRA I'd like to see that organization fight for all the Bill of Rights to just guns! Has the NRA waged a war against the rights taken away from all Americans by the Patriot Act. Nope, guns seems to be their only interest!

The NRA has always reminded

The NRA has always reminded me of the guys from the Tobacco Industry... The Guys from the Tobacco Industry remind me of the NRA guys.. If you think that what I just wrote reads like a Circle Jerk.., Go listen to the NRA and the Tobacco Guys....... Remember Your History Lessons...?...'''' The Business of America IS BUSINESS..!''''... Perhaps they edited out a part that maybe said--> '''No Matter Who Gets Hurt''''.. Because we were young school kids at the time we told about such famous American Quotes like that...

When I was a kid you could

When I was a kid you could buy a decent high powered rifle like a British 303, or a Russian Mosin-Nagant for under $10 in any decent store, Wards, Sears, etc. Crime was almost non-existent. I think the people should be very careful about giving up the freedom to bear arms. The crime comes from the bad morals of the present day, the loss of gentlemanly behavior.

When guns are outlawed, even

When guns are outlawed, even Govt. should not use guns to shoot down unarmed people. Instead of bullets that kill, there should be rubber bullets to control violence. To kill citizens or neighbors or colleagues is an aberration. You need to talk to them. Violence begets violence. The State is the biggest terrorist anywhere in the world and there are more criminals in uniform than outside. Emancipate. Right the Wrong. Work for Change.

Can we clarify something?

Can we clarify something? The "Australian Gun Ban" only targeted semi automatic rifles. Pistols were already illegal for decades, except for collectors and target shooters, who had a stringent permit process, which includes their guns being locked in safes, police inspections at any time, etc. Farmers, hunters, people who feel the need to kill Bambi's mother (or the marsupial equivalent), still have guns! I was living in the U.S. when that NRA infomercial came out, and I have some news for you... IT WAS ALL LIES.

Not unlike so many lobby

Not unlike so many lobby groups in Washington there's no shortage of misinformation promulgated by the NRA. But for those whom that is sufficient evidence to throw the baby out with the bathwater by invoking a wholesale condemnation of guns, take a look at the following two paragraphs excerpted from a recent Paul Craig Roberts essay: "Fearful of American citizens, the US government is building concentration camps apparently all over the country. According to news reports, a $385 million US government contract was given by the Bush/Cheney Regime to Cheney’s company, Halliburton, to build "detention centers" in the US. The corporate media never explained for whom the detention centers are intended. Most Americans dismiss such reports. "It can’t happen here." However, in north-eastern Florida not far from Tallahassee, I have seen what might be one of these camps. There is a building inside a huge open area fenced with razor wire. There is no one there and no signs. The facility appears new and unused and does not look like an abandoned prisoner work camp." http://www.vdare.com/roberts/090609_fear.htm The Tallahassee exhibit is, as indicated, but one of many. And this mischief was going on long before Obama was paying lip service to putting Americans back to work. It should give all of us pause to reflect on that part of our constitution that mentions ". . . . all enemies foreign or domestic".

As a legal Ameriacn resident

As a legal Ameriacn resident and Canadian Citizen, I am living permanently in Canada. The idiotic gun-loving attitude in North Florida, where we lived was one of the main reasons for this decision. BTW - the second Amendment was written well over 200 years ago, at a time when there was no real national US army established and it refers to a "well regulated" militia. How can so many people not understand that gun fatalities cost annually more lives than losses to the US military and plane crashes together and about as many as fatal car crashes? Cars are necessary but hand guns and other guns in cities should be made illegal immediately to stop this internal terrorism in the United States.

We need MANDATORY

We need MANDATORY GUN/FIREARM INSURANCE-if you own any of these, you need to buy insurance against their being used to harm anyone-the harm done can be COMPENSATED.

Its sad to say that gun

Its sad to say that gun control has to wait until Obama's second term. Its not just the NRA. The people have been systematically terrorized by the GOP for decades about being unarmed. America has been a country of unhappy paranoid people since the 1950s when the communist world-domination myth was hatched. I agree there is no worse calamity in America than this mad gun disease. But Obama would lose the argument and the rest of his agenda would go with it.

Today (Sunday, June 14th),

Today (Sunday, June 14th), in the Atlanta Metropolitan area, a 10 year old boy is being treated for a gunshot wound the the head inflicted by his 12 year old brother, who found his father's loaded handgun on the kitchen table. And the beat goes on . . .

So you won't interview the

So you won't interview the JPFO seems pretty antisemitic to me. Is it because you might need to look at what happens in most countries that institute gun control. In 1915 1.5 million Armenian Christians were killed by the Turk after being disarmed. In 1938 Germany Jews were prohibited from owning or possessing firearms, 12 million Jews and assorted others were murdered. Lenin and Stalin killed millions of Soviets estimates are in the area of 23 to 35million. Mao Ze Dong and his Red guard are estimated to have killed 70,000,0000 not counting the Tibeteans. Then there is Pol Pot, Idi Amin and a dozen other tyrants who disarmed and killed there citizens on a scale that makes any average pyschos mass murder pale. The Hutus killed 800,000 Tutsis, mostly with machetes because guns were outlawed. Lets not forget that the two worst mass murders in US history were done with fertilizer and box cutters not guns. Cain beat Abel to death with a rock guns aren't the problem.

For those of you whining

For those of you whining about the NRA please note it is composed of over 4 million Americans who donate time and money as compared to the VPC and Brady Campaign which gets the majority of their funds from the Joyce Foundation and who's volunteers number in the hundreds. Interesting trivia about the VPC is that they have 2 paid staff that get 65% of the money that the Joyce Foundation gives. Another interesting factiod, Josh Sugerman of the VPC is a FFL meaning he is licensed by the federal government to sell guns one of only two FFLs in Washington D.C. Reasonable people understand disarming the law abiding citizen does not disarm the criminal. The Supreme Court has repeatedly stated the police have no responsibility to protect individual citizens, that means citizens should be free to own and possess the same tools police use to keep themselves safe.

I'll leave everyone with a

I'll leave everyone with a short summery here. Gun Control is entirely about taking guns away from those that do not use them in a manner that harms other. That is all that gun control is about, taking guns away from those not inclined to use them illegally. This is wrong right on it's face. You'll not disparage the rights of others by projecting your irrational feelings of insecurity and paranoia onto other. You want to keep criminals from killing people? I want to too. You want to lock criminals who use guns up forever? I want to as well. You want to keep criminals from ever touching a gun? I want to as well. You want to keep people of all ages from dying needlessly from gun accidents? So do I. Want to stop children from shooting their siblings and stop gun accidents with children? I do too. Want to remove my rights to carry and restrict my rights to own a gun or certain types of guns when I practice responsible ownership and carry in some vain attempt to keep a CRIMINAL from killing someone? That is a failed ideology that has no basis in reality. As a gun owner I will work with any group that advocates non-violence and responsible gun ownership. You may not however, take my guns or infringe on my rights to carry. You may not have my guns, you may not restrict my rights. I will not let you do that.

Naive. If it were possible

Naive. If it were possible to outlaw guns, and get rid of all firearms in the world, that would be a great day for peace. But I live in reality and I understand that this will never happen, and I understand the 2nd Amendment and why it is more important now than it ever was. If we ban or outlaw guns, it will only serve to keep guns out of the hands of law-abiding gun owners and not criminals that will get their guns by illegal means if they are driven to commit crime. But that is the least of our worries. The real threat is from the US Government using the Military to create a police state to control the population and turn them into a fearful, enslaved citizenry. You can write this off as a "Conspiracy Theory", but it is happening, and you need to read the "USA PATRIOT ACT" and see how it strips the American people of their sovereignty in this great nation. The 2nd Amendment was designed as a way for the people to protect themselves from a barbaric government, which is what we have now. And it will only get worse. Not to mention the fact that their are factions all over the world that would love to "invade" the US while our military is spread out all over the world, but the fact that it is known that American's own guns AND know how to use them, it would better serve America to educate people on gun safety at this point.

We have stopped talking

We have stopped talking about guns and gun control because President Obama, the Democrats in Congress and the state and local Democrats realize that the American Public is so paranoid about guns that to talk about guns means giving up Health Care Reform and the rest of the progressive agenda, because the IRA can muster enough support to take control of Congress in 2010 if guns become a prime issue. After much consideration, I may stop supporting gun control in the near future. We now have more guns than people in this country and no matter what laws are passed, there are too many guns out there already. We may regrettably have to live forever in a country that claims to value life, but values weaponry and the illusion of self-defense much higher. FreddieVee

I used to have great respect

I used to have great respect for Bill Moyers. He always seemed to get to the root of the issue and did so in a fact-based manner. Not this time. Even a tiny bit of research on his part would have revealed that of the 30,000 "killed by guns", two-thirds are suicides. Eliminating guns won't stop suicides, else Japan's suicide rate wouldn't be double the US rate. The old "22 times more likely" canard used to be "43 times". It's from a thoroughly discredited "research" piece by Kellarman. But look what's being compared, and check how the terms are defined in the underlying studies and you find it's all part of a huge anti-gun lie. Check your sources, Bill. Then ask yourself if the "statistics" they've created tell you what you THINK they're telling you. Finally, what of the beneficial uses of guns? The millions of self-defenses each year? Do they not count because the criminals driven off were not KILLED? Are you willing to see 2.5 to 4 million more successful criminal attacks each year as the price of banning guns? Why aren't we talking about guns, Bill? Simple. Guns are not the problem. Criminals - and people who don't know, or choose to ignore the facts - they're the problem.

"Today, we need a nation of

"Today, we need a nation of Minutemen, citizens who are not only prepared to take arms, but citizens who regard the preservation of freedom as the basic purpose of their daily life and who are willing to consciously work and sacrifice for that freedom." -- JOHN F. KENNEDY "By calling attention to a well-regulated militia for the security of the Nation, and the right of each citizen to keep and bear arms, our Founding Fathers recognized the essentially civilian nature of our economy. Although it is extremely unlikely that the fears of governmental tyranny, which gave rise to the second amendment, will ever be a major danger to our Nation, the amendment still remains an important declaration of our basic military-civilian relationships, in which every citizen must be ready to participate in the defense of the country. For that reason I believe the second amendment will always be important." -- JOHN F. KENNEDY "The right of citizens to bear arms is just one more guarantee against arbitrary government, and one more safeguard against a tyranny which now appears remote in America, but which historically has proved to be always possible." -- HUBERT HUMPHREY Gun bans don't disarm criminals, gun bans attract them. -- WALTER MONDALE

It seems that the issue of

It seems that the issue of gun control is serving as a cover for perhaps a more important one - the irresponsibility of the weapons manufacturers and their powerful influence on our government. The thought of strengthening requirements or increasing restrictions on gun ownership just sends us all into heated arguments. Meanwhile, while we are so distracted, we forget that the bottom line of the weapons manufacturers is not to act as responsible 'individuals' within our society, but to continue reaping profits. If the profits are at the expense of the health and safety of our society (and our world) so be it. Isn't that how it's worked for the tobacco industry? I hate to say it but it may be true that our government actually embraces the additional fear and insecurity that our excess of guns creates; it's an effective distraction in itself.

Repeal of the Patriot Act

Repeal of the Patriot Act and the other direct infringements upon the Constitution, would go a long way toward restoring a sense of security amongst the population. So far, all talk and no action - this is making many very nervous as time goes on. This recent talk of Veterans being a threat to security is so totally over the top - it's like a self fulfilling prophecy when a nation's pundits and politicians directly attacks the integrity and rights of the very people who have fought and suffered for the rest of us - who would ever want to serve after this? What a bunch of thankless, paranoid jerks we have become. If they were sent to fight a meaningless war of aggression, blame the politicians - not the soldiers - otherwise show them some respect and give them the benefit of the doubt.

Like a lot of other things,

Like a lot of other things, in a democracy, it is up to the voters to decide who will draft and pass our laws. This country probably has the laws and politicians it deserves, but there is always hope that the ballot box may change things. Anti-gun people have better muster some energy and put their vote and money where their mouth is. We need a vigorous anti-gun campaign by the people, and those of us who believe in it have better start working. No President will achieve this on his or her own. We need to shout and yell about the truth, about the damage done by all these guns, pay for ads that show the evidence, and support candidates that are willing to take on the gun lobby. When citizens of this country will do more than complain and cry about guns, maybe we will get somewhere.

Some gun control is

Some gun control is reasonable, but to suggest that nutballs will stop being dangerous simply because they do not have guns is absurd. In countries all over the world murderous thugs kill innocent people with bombs, machetes, sticks and rocks. The recent genocide in Rwanda should be all the proof that one needs that a lack of guns will not prevent mass killings. We need to control homicidal crazies, or controlling guns will do us no good. Mr. Von Brunn was, as a convicted felon, already forbidden to possess firearms, so should we lock up the guns, or the insane criminals?

Why Have We Stopped Talking

Why Have We Stopped Talking about Criminals Illegally Possessing Guns? The piece above starts by recounting a recent tragic action by an unbalanced person. News accounts have been scarce, but my understanding is that same person has a past conviction for causing trouble. So was it legal for him to own a gun? Probably not, although I don't know the specific charges in the other case (and the news media isn't helping by providing any detailed information). But let's assume it was unlawful for this person to own a firearm. But the event still happened. So what is needed here is more laws? Think about that a little, and if it makes sense to you, please do society a favor and please get professional help.

"News accounts have been

"News accounts have been scarce, but my understanding is that same person has a past conviction for causing trouble. So was it legal for him to own a gun? Probably not, although I don't know the specific charges in the other case (and the news media isn't helping by providing any detailed information)." I'll help out here. There is no ambiguity. He was a felon. Therefore, he was prohibited from owning a gun. Neither the NRA nor any gun owners I ever heard of think it should be otherwise. He was prohibited from owning ammo. Heck, he was even prohibited by Federal law from even TOUCHING a gun! He was prohibited from carrying a gun. He was prohibited from carrying a gun in DC. He was prohibited from carrying a gun in the museum. He was prohibited from aiming a gun at a person. He was prohibited from shooting a gun at a person. He was prohibited from killing a person. Now for extra points, would someone tell me a law that would have stopped this guy?

I won't repeat the many good

I won't repeat the many good points made by those here who support the right to own and use firearms, but here's something I haven't seen commented on yet: Whenever one of these mass shootings happens, and it is one of the large proportion of them that are perpetrated by "right-wing extremists", either the ease the perp had in getting hold of guns is the dominant theme, or it is that he was a believer in a dangerous ideology that empowered his hatreds to the point that he was ready to kill and maybe die for them. One theme seems to always crowd out the other in the public discussion of these killings. In virtually all of those "extremist" shootings, the "extreme" ideology is one form or another of Nazism, whether overt Aryan Nationism, the Phineas Priest thing, Identity "Christianity", KKK, or some other form of Jew-hating, Hitler-loving racist thought. Blaming the means and ignoring the motivation in the case of an extremely violent movement that wants to destroy the status quo and exterminate whole demographic groups is a classic case of missing the point.

The idea behind anti-gun

The idea behind anti-gun lobbying seems noble and intelligent at first glance. It seems almost painfully obvious that if we just get rid of guns, violent crimes will plummet, and maybe in certain regards that may be true. Even though it seems to be the obvious solution to our problems its not until we disarm our own government can disarming of the people become a good idea. When you begin to remove guns from the hands of civilians, you begin to take away one of the strongest tools we have to prevent the removal of our freedom from the hands of government. The founding fathers had great forethought when they included gun ownership into the Bill of Rights because they knew, without the ability for the people to defend themselves, the government would have absolute control over the layperson. Even if our government's arsenal is a hell of a lot more advanced than it's people, the power of civilians to rise up to the unjust power of a government is essential in a free society. I believe there are much better solutions to violent crime than the blanket removal of weapons from peoples possession.

DW, with Terminator Drones

DW, with Terminator Drones gun protection will become a moot point. These Terminators can be operated from anywhere in the world and there are enough people around the world that could be recruited to operate the Terminator Drones for use against America. Also, read the 2nd Amendment carefully, it states that the guns are to be used to protect the state not the citizenry.

Since most of the population

Since most of the population of the world does not have the ready access to firerearms the U.S. public has, and in following with the impeccable logic of the anti-gun group, the means of delivering death should be strictly controlled....therefore all machetes should be registered around the globe. I am in favor of very strict gun control (even banning of handguns as a general rule...) but until the anti-gun confederation can come up with a more rational and educated argument against private ownership, the N.R.A. has a cloudless horizon to look at for quite some time to come. (by the way the second amendmt. applies to govt. controlled militia as a huge body of jurisprudence understands it - to be fair the contrary is also true)..

I find it interesting, that

I find it interesting, that neither the author of the article, nor, any of the commentators are acknowledging that the murderous nut in the Holocaust Museum was actually stopped in his tracks by THE RETURN FIRE from guards at the museum. The simple reality, is that a gun is just a thing, a tool. It is nether good or evil. It simply is. Like a hammer, a baseball bat, a knife, or a rock, the gun is simply a man-made tool. It is all about how the person employs that tool. Guns are scary because, people are scarier.

Questions: What does

Questions: What does allowing concealed weapons in national parks have ANYTHING to do with credit card reform? How is it even legal to "sneak" something so wholly unrelated into an amendment like that? Speaking for myself, I do not feel safe knowing that an inebriated camper might pull out a concealed weapon while I'm camping with my family. The fact that this is now legal is just total madness... as is legalized gun ownership.
