The Healthcare War Is Now Official

Yesterday the American Medical Association came out against a public option for health care. And yesterday the President reaffirmed his support for it. The next weeks will show what Obama is made of - whether he's willing and able to take on the most formidable lobbying coalition he has faced so far on an issue that will define his presidency.

And make no mistake: A public option large enough to have bargaining leverage to drive down drug prices and private-insurance premiums is the defining issue of universal health care. It's the only way to make health care affordable. It's the only way to prevent Medicare and Medicaid from eating up future federal budgets. An ersatz public option - whether Kent Conrad's non-profit cooperatives, Olympia Snowe's "trigger," or regulated state-run plans - won't do squat.

The last president to successfully take on the giant health care lobbies was LBJ. He got Medicare and Medicaid enacted because he weighed into the details, twisted congressional arms, threatened and cajoled, drew lines in the sand, and went to war against the AMA and the other giant lobbyists standing in the way. The question now is how much LBJ is in Barack Obama.

The big guns are out and they're firing. All major lobbying firms in Washington - many of them brimming with ex-members of Congress - are now crawling all over the Hill. Lots of money is on the table. AMA's political action committee has contributed $9.8 million to congressional candidates since 2000, and its lobbying arm is one of the most formidable on the Hill. Meanwhile, Big Insurance and Big Pharma are increasing their firepower. The five largest private insurers and their trade group America's Health Insurance Plans spent a total of $6.4 million on lobbying in the first quarter of this year, up more than $1 million from the first quarter last year, and are spending even more now. United Health Group spent $1.5 million in the first quarter, up 34 percent from the $1.1 million it spent in the first quarter last year. Aetna spent $809,793 between January and the end of March, up 41 percent from last year. Pfizer, the world's biggest drugmaker, spent more than $6.1 million on lobbying between January and March, more than double what it spent last year. It also spent nearly $3.3 million lobbying in the fourth quarter of 2008. Every one of them is upping their spending.

Some congressional Democrats are willing and able to stand up to this barrage. Many are not. They need cover from the White House.

The President can't do this alone. You must weigh in and get everyone you know to weigh in, too. Bombard your senators and representatives. Organize and mobilize others. And let the White House know how strongly you feel. This is one of those battles that define a presidency. But more importantly, it's one of those battles that define the state of American democracy.

Perhaps the American voters

Perhaps the American voters could raise enough money to buy some representatives back...

The suggestion that people

The suggestion that people buys their own representative is a good one, perhaps the most viable solution. Sometimes I doubt the sanity of some segments of our society. Doctors opposed to provide basic affordable health care to the people? Elected “representatives of the people” acting against benefits for those people? Most Doctors are basically money-machines who perceive the patients as sources of money. Doctors and “people’s representatives” receive very generous packages from the pharmaceutical industry. Hence they act accordingly.

"Lots of money is on the

"Lots of money is on the table." Not lots of reasoned argument or lots of rhetoric, but lots of money. Bribe money. And, unfortunately, congress is replete with corporate whores begging and crawling all over each other for their piece of that lucre.

Nobody likes to think that their "elected" representatives are con-artists out to defraud the public for their own gain, but at some point this fact can no longer be denied. The government of the United States has been taken over by individuals who work for no one but their corporate sponsors. These individuals regularly commit treason in both the common use of the term as a betrayal, and in the legal use of the term as "aiding and abetting the enemies of the United States." Democracy is dead in the United States, it has been replaced with Fascism. This was done while "good people" looked on with open eyes and did nothing.

We are no longer a

We are no longer a democratic nation. We are officially ruled by CORPORATE FASCISM and have almost nothing to say unless we come out in millions. The mystery has been solved.

Stefan has a great Idea but

Stefan has a great Idea but I thought we had accomplished that with Obama!? Where's our change! Get on the bus to DC on the 25th!

Excellent piece, and also

Excellent piece, and also the comments about corporate fascism, etc, are right on target. However, I would pick a bone with Reich when he says: "A public option large enough to have bargaining leverage to drive down drug prices and private-insurance premiums is the defining issue of universal health care. It's the only way to make health care affordable. It's the only way to prevent Medicare and Medicaid from eating up future federal budgets." The bone? Single-payer is another option, much better than a public option.

The very wealthy don't want

The very wealthy don't want to make health care affordable. It's the way many of them make their money. They can pay for all the health care they want. Our country is ruled by the rich for the rich and the rest can go to hell. Meanwhile, the left is threatened by right wing nutjobs with guns.

An good article, and good

An good article, and good suggestion: that we continue to remind our representatives of what we want in a health care system, and that we also and repeatedly call and email the White House with our views on the matter. It is the only sensible choice, and when the numbers are there, the reps can point to them and say Yes this is doable.

Sooo, where did that

Sooo, where did that lobbyist money come from? If it's part of the industry profit, they they got too much - PROFIT. It's being used against us. I seem to remember ads in the paper with hundreds of doctor's names who support universal, single payer health care. Could there be just a few in the AMA who are speaking as if all doctors supported their position when they really do not? Universal, single payer care for all - NOW!

Politicians have not changed

Politicians have not changed or become less moral. Our Democracy is no more in peril than it was during the Revolution or Civil War. Civil Rights and Voting Rights was not an easy victory against racists. The difference has always been how awake and active our population has been, fighting for positive political change. Try calling your State and Fed Representatives about this issue and see what happens. Try attending a march or rally to show your support for Universal Healthcare. Try writing a Letter to the Editor regarding HR 676 and see if they will print it. You may find yourself less frustrated with "The Government" and surprised at the changes you and like-minded others are able to affect on our world.

Now that America has turned

Now that America has turned socialist making the american tax payer the part owner of multiple banks and GM, (once the largest company in the world) WHERE is OUR socialist medical program. The reason people allow their money to be spent on banks and public companies are for the benefits they receive, usually guaranteed housing and medical care. Looks like we've incurred the expenses of socialism without the benefits. Time for the sleeping herd to awaken!

billydoc- I take issue with

billydoc- I take issue with your portrayal of elected representatives as 'corporate whores.' Whores are honest, at least, about the open exchange of sex (or whatever commodity) for money, and everyone knows what's being bought and sold. Our 'elected' representatives unanimously declare that campaign contributions do not influence their votes. They aren't whores, they're lying hypocrites. Apologies here to any elected representatives who defy my sweeping generalisation; you're probably the legislators who are backing single-payer.

dental should also be

dental should also be covered universally

His point is to call your

His point is to call your legislators and tell others to do the same. Single-payer, public option, whatever you call it, won't pass without legislators having the cover of voter acceptance as their motivation to vote against big pharma and AMA.

Congress would pass a single

Congress would pass a single payer healthcare plan if they were convinced that if they didn't, the populace stopped cooperating with them utterly. That's the one club that the people can use on their "elected" representatives that can get their attention. Mass non-cooperation with the government, of course, is an ideal and a practical impossibility, nevertheless it IS what people could use to make a government start acting on the basis of the greatest good for the greatest number.

The easiest way to drive

The easiest way to drive down the cost of health care is to abolish the restrictive practice of the medical profession - open more schools of medicine. It's not only those who are accepted to medical school who are capable of becoming doctors. Saturate the market with doctors who are just as competent as the ones who currently graduate but couldn't get in because the number of places is inadequate. More doctors, lower prices - it's supply and demand.

We have to be realistic,

We have to be realistic, people. Things will NEVER change until we have forced our representatives, kicking and screaming, into accepting CLEAN ELECTION laws, limiting outside money, shortening the election cycle, providing FREE TV (just how many billions do you think the media giants have made since the Comminications act of 1998? They OWE us!) CLEAN ELECTION laws are happening now in various states at the state level, and seem to be doing the trick. WE as a people have to stand up and make our representatives know that THIS is one of our TOP priorities, or it will never come to pass at a national level. Once the representatives no longer have to worry about MONEY for re-election, then the only people they would have to answer to is US. Democrats own the White House, the Senate and the House. There couldn't possibly be a better time for us to enact such laws. Do they have the guts? It's on us. If we can force them to enact CLEAN ELECTION laws, then every other political issue will take care of itself. Just my take.

Robert Reich is someone who

Robert Reich is someone who could take up the job of holding Obama's 'feet to the fire' on this one, and do it effectively. We need someone like Mr. Reich on this on for as much time as he can give to it. This is it. This is the biggest political battle upcoming that we are ever likely to see in our lifetime. Big Pharma., Big Insurance, The AMA, and all those lobbyists dollars set to descend upon our legally bribeable Congress, all arrayed against the American People's desire for universal health care. Can we win? We probably cannot win this time (as with Medicare and Medicaid), unless the American people themselves become actively involved in communicating with Congress. So, get to work, all of us.

The AMA is right. Obama's

The AMA is right. Obama's plan is modelled on Hitler's idea of "lives not worthy to be lived." Please do more research. Cutting $935 bn (see Wa Po Sat June 13)out of Medicare and Medicaid, when hundreds of thousands of Americans are losing their jobs and health insurance is insane. OMB Director Orszag believes in the British model where live prolonging care (like dialysis) is denied to patients over 55 or 60.

human vs. $...its that

human vs. $...its that simple and that disgusting in today's health care 'war'. so my general tally of money spent by insuranc co's & the 1 drug co. mentioned in the above article is approx. $13 million. wonder how many lives that could have saved, cured; relieved suffering, worry and hardship? these people are actually and literally arguing and fighting for the right TO KEEP MAKING $$$$ OFF OF OTHERS MISERY AND DEATH. this is civilization?! this is the best the so called 'leader' of the free world(america) and hence 'leader' of the human race can manage? that monetary profit can actually be 'sanely' considered and weighed next to the quality of and literally human lives is the most sorrowful and dehumanizing madness.

Is the AMA deranged?!?!?

Is the AMA deranged?!?!? Maybe the leaders need some medication because they're all bipolar! I know plenty of medical people who are totally pro-universal health care, including doctors. I'd be curious to see a poll of AMA members. I hope they raise hell with that organization because it's obviously no longer representing its constituents. Neither is the stupid Chamber of Commerce! This would save their members tremendous headaches in having to negotiate with insurance companies not to mention paying out a big chunk of their employees' monthly premiums! About 2/3 of them have insurance for their employees and it takes huge overhead for them to manage it. These groups are obviously going off the reservation somehow! JMH

It's up to the voters. All

It's up to the voters. All congressional and senate Democrats voting against a public option must be put on notice by their voters that they will lose their next election, and be replaced by Democrats who will vote for it. How? The same way we elected Obama - by the WILL OF THE PEOPLE. No exceptions! We cannot depend on Obama to take the hard stand. We must do it ourselves. Why not target the Republicans also? Simple. We don't vote for them, and we don't need to.

WE NEED A PUBLIC OPTION

WE NEED A PUBLIC OPTION HEALTH CARE EVERY THING DEPENDS ON AMERICANS RECEIVING GOOD HEALTH CARE. YOU HAVE MADE ENOUGH FROM US BIG HEALTH CARE CORPORATION. WE ARE TIRED OF YOU PUTTING YOUR HANDS IN OUR POCKETS. AND GETTING RICHER AND RICHER WHILE WE GET SICKER AND POORER. YOUR TIME IS OVER. OUR REPRESENTATIVES ARE SO SUPPOSED TO BE REPRESENTING US NOT YOU BECAUSE YOUR PAYING THEM

Stand up to these lobbyists

Stand up to these lobbyists people. The Province of Saskatchewan Canada was the first government in North America to enact public health care paid for by the taxpayer. Saskatchewan also went through a bitter doctors' strike before things started running smoothly. The provincial premier of the day, Tommy Douglas started hiring doctors from outside the province (and Canada) to make sure health services were maintained. Saskatchewan's doctors soon saw the light, and returned to their practices. A few years ago the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation conducted a nation wide poll to determine the most influential Canadian of the twentieth century and Tommy Douglas won hands down. Most Canadians define themselves by their public health care system. The biggest problem with Canada's public health care system is the politicians refuse to keep their hands off it! One doctor whom I knew left North Bay, Ontario to practice in Texas. A year later he addressed the North Bay chapter of the Ontario Medical Association and stated that with public health care, the doctor is at least guaranteed his fee. If the American citizen gets vocal enough that his/her representative gets worried about being re-elected, you will get public health care. To those who worry about taxes going up, remember you health care premiums will be eliminated. Also you will get health care for pre-existing conditions.

It is only right that

It is only right that doctors should make money from the sickness of our citizens. Is it unAmerican to make money based on the sickness of others? No, infact, there should be universal medical prescriptions for opium, etc. so that everybody is hooked on making more money for the medical industry.

"Perhaps the American voters

"Perhaps the American voters could raise enough money to buy some representatives back... " You are kidding right? Why stop there? Hire hit men to kill those who won't do our bidding. Look, if Americans have to enter into a bidding war to compel elected officials to carry out the jobs we are paying them to do, then this country isn't worth saving. That is a horrendous idea.

"The suggestion..." You are

"The suggestion..." You are simplistic and frankly wrong. A majority of physicians do not belong to the AMA. I have fought the rip-off Big Pharma my whole career, and have never belonged to AMA. Why do doctors like me work so hard for ingrates like you? There are more like me that like what you describe. Why not help us rather than paint us all with the same brush? Go back and learn something. Mr. Reich is right.

You read it: we must weigh

You read it: we must weigh in (in our millions). Bombard your rep. with calls, emails, and letters demanding a national health plan, HR 676 is the closest thing to it. Organize others to do the same. We may be a fascist nation, but what other choice is there besides taking to the streets? We should do both, and now!

Gosh, it took Obama the

Gosh, it took Obama the peace candidate two weeks to become Obama, the war president; it took Obama the anti-torture candidate 5 weeks to become Obama the CIA torture president; it took Obama the pro-financial regulation candidate four weeks to become Obama the banker's and hedge fund's president. I wonder how long it will take Obama the universal health care candidate to become the Obama the insurance company and pharma apologist president. We know that big money will always win, to the detriment of 80% of the people. Yet, somehow, we always fall for the "this one is different" line. What makes this particularly bad, is that so many of us really liked the guy. In another 6 months or so all of us duped into financing his run for the White House, and working for his election will be finally and totally disillusioned and the ruling class will have succeeded in destroying the idealism of yet another generation. It really sucks...

When Canada was developing

When Canada was developing their health care system the Canadian medical professionals with the backing of the powerful American medical lobby opposed the proposals. However, the changes were adopted!

If money determines the

If money determines the outcome, even the most Pollyannish will have to recognize who the real bosses are.

It is ludicrous that we

It is ludicrous that we should have to "buy some representatives back" when we already elected them, we pay their salaries, and they are supposedly there to serve us. But that really is the situation we are in now. The only long term solution it to prohibit corporations from donating money, services, or anything else to government officials, elected or not. That will be a long and tough battle, and I don't know if we will be able to win it before they ruin the country and the entire world via their promotion of global warming, war, and other things that bring them short term profit. In the short term, we can focus on warning the Republicans and corporatist Democrats that we will fight to replace them in the primaries, and again in the elections unless they vote in a way that promotes life and health instead of death and profits for the rich.

Unfortunately Obama is more

Unfortunately Obama is more a Bill Clinton; certainly not an LBJ. He doesn't have the backbone or the know how. He could probably get single payer, but he didn't campaign for it and he's going to have to be pushed hard to consider it.

SAVE MY JOB is what the

SAVE MY JOB is what the health care Insurance Industry is screaming and SAVE OUR PROFITS the Drug Companies PLEAD, and they'll do nearly anything to continue the Status Quo of Bankrupting Americans. What if Al Queida were to come to Washington with the Lobbying power these Un American Profiteers have? They could quit bombing and planning mass murder and simply fill Washington with Lobbyists to turn the Agenda to Sharia Law. Single Payer Heath Care is NOT the "inroads to Marxism" and it is the ONLY Solution which has a Chance of saving the Futures of ALL Americans, not just the rich, but Yes, it probably is the death of the Insurance Industry. So What? We made Crummy Cars and paid the price so why not kill off the Predatory Insurance Maggots? Let them Get Real Jobs, and may Lobbyists get the runs so bad their Insurers Drop them! The whole industry MAKES me sick.

When it comes right down to

When it comes right down to it, the millions our legislators sell their souls for is used for them to advance their career. But if they piss off enough of the electorate, the millions may not be enough to buy their seats back. Please, do as Mr. Reich suggests -- Bombard your legislators in support of the public option. It's tempting to sit back being cynical and in so doing cede the battle to the guys with the big guns."But when the blast of war blows in our ears, Then imitate the action of the tiger..." Gather your troops and whatever the outcome, know that you have given it your all!

Does anyone know of any

Does anyone know of any planned marches on Washington? When do the buses leave? I'll gladly go. Please advise...

when i call my elected

when i call my elected officials i ask their flunkies who they represent. you know pharma military complex etc.i usually explain it again and if i have to i use maplight.org to explain that i know they don't really represent me. it gets them wild but they try to act cool but we both know the gigs up.then i do the usual we won't vote for them etc. thats the only thing they ever understand. there is a korean comedian johnny chung whose stand up includes in korea you bride a politician you go to jail. in america you bribe a politician you go to washington! what a great line. amen!

The U.S. is swinging ...

The U.S. is swinging ... soon it will be a place to emigrate from. The problem is, unless you have a lot of money, no one wants you.

"... AMA's political action

"... AMA's political action committee has contributed $9.8 million to congressional candidates since 2000, and its lobbying arm is one of the most formidable on the Hill." is it only me that see this a major problem with all things political in the US?... its way past time to clean up the lobbyists who are buying power and influence of representatives who are supposedly representing their constituents and not in bed with big corporate interests and their money! ...corporations aren't people... they shouldn't be involved in such a powerful way in decisions like this... they have been blocking this from happening since Truman came up with the first real plan back in 1946... for shame.... for shame

Doctors are not opposed -

Doctors are not opposed - the AMA is opposed. Many Doctors are sick and tired of having multiple insurance companies with multiple billing systems add to the cost of medical care - but do not provide any medical care! The doctors I know - and I know quite a few think they went to medical school, repaid horrendous loans and endured bruising and exhausting internships and residencies to be able to care for people - not to have insurance companies, with no medical degrees, tell them how to care for their patients. We all have an obligation to support serious reform of medical care by returning care of patients to those best qualified to provide that care - DOCTORS!

Public option isn't good

Public option isn't good enough. We wouldn't be able to reap the savings we would be eliminating all the middlemen. Single payer -- which the public supports overwhelmingly -- is now beginning to get serious attention in Congress, where there was a hearing on it this week. Rep. Conyers' single payer bill, H676, has 80 sponsors. Doctors and nurses are demonstrating in Washington and getting arrested. The media are finally giving the issue attention after years of disinformation from the insurance industry. So yes, get on board, but tell your legislators not to settle for anything less than single payer. And go to Washington June 26 for the demonstration if you can.

"Oh, say can you see...?"

"Oh, say can you see...?" Banner yet wave, O'er the land of the fee and the home of the slave?" In economic slavery, the slaves pay for everything: their food, clothing, housing, and... Ta Da! Medical care!

The AMA is protecting their

The AMA is protecting their pockets. Public insurance -- at least basic coverage -- has to be an option. Let the insurance companies slug it out to provide upgraded coverage. Here are the simple, common-sense essential issues that have to be addressed by health reform: 1. Insurance cost has to be affordable for everyone on a sliding scale based on income. 2. Mandatory, automatic coverage for basic insurance for everyone. No free lunch, opting out and then showing up at emergency rooms for care. Penalties for businesses/individuals (similar to not getting auto insurance) who seek care without insurance. 3. Mandatory acceptance by physicians/ providers – no opting out like Medicare. Except cosmetic treatment. 4. Upgraded insurance options for additional benefits/coverage (like Medicare), either paid by employer or by individual. Perhaps three tiers – basic (mandatory), better, and best. 5. Automatic deductions by payroll or other income (e.g. SS, SSI, unemployment, etc) 6. Incentives for businesses to continue or add insurance as employee benefit (e.g. tax breaks). Otherwise, businesses will abandon their plans. 7. Control costs, e.g. demand truth-in-pricing for all providers rather than current exaggerated MSRP system, no insurance “discounts”, eliminate or reduce the 30+% that insurance companies skim off.

The A.M.A. is now officially

The A.M.A. is now officially on record as OUT OF TOUCH with the medical profession, and OUT OF TOUCH with the American People. A peer reviewed study shows that 59% of American physicians support a single payer National Health Plan, as do 65% of the American public. The A.M.A. should step forward and acknowledge that they no longer represent the American medical profession. Step forward and acknowledge that they're a complete disgrace to their Oath, and a complete disgrace to the meaning of delivering health care to all Americans. Why don't they just POST themselves to the health insurance and pharmaceutical industry -- POST themselves to the Republican Party -- and as 27,000 Americans die every year while their CARDIOLOGISTS earn a measly 1/2 million annually -- signed, sealed, and delivered -- we, the A.M.A., are yours eternally.

Well, I have given up on the

Well, I have given up on the Obamarama long ago. He talks out of both sides of his mouth while doing what his corporate masters tell him to do. If you think the American people are going to get meaningful health care reform out of this administration, I suggest you don not hold your breath. It ain't gonna happen folks. This guy is no FDR and his is no LBJ. In fact he is beginning to look more and more like a BJ.

I am thinking of starting up

I am thinking of starting up a New Political Party... The tentative name would be the 'Auction-Back Party'... Our goal would be to first raise a whole LOT OF MONEY... Then, we would use that money to 'sway some votes' our way. Then we would ram through legislation with some more money and lobbyists... Then, after our legislation to 'RE-AUCTION AMERICA passes and Open Bidding For Congress Commences, We would bid furiously against all the Corporations to Buy America back from them and deliver it back to the American People where it belongs... That way, even if Corporations lose the bid, they will still feel, without a hint of guilt, compensated for all the BILLIONS UPON BILLIONS of DOLLARS they spent lobbying, corrupting and 'efforting' forth their ownership of what was once the USA and is now THE CORPORATE AMERICAN PARADISE.. also known as THE CRAP in some wide circles... So, remember the name--- The AUCTION-BACK PARTY... it may just become a reality one day... ya never know...

Anonymous has a great Idea

Anonymous has a great Idea but I thought we had accomplished that with Obama!? Where's our change? Cause we would only need to pool some small change to become competitive on the lobbying market. Lobbying cost is a trifling, compared to the huge gains which could be made when the Law is implemented. I think the 'Auction-Back Party' should focus on representatives with a solid track record of corruption. If they, for some strange reason, refuse to deal with the highest bidder, I also think this particular post of money, conveniently handled in black trash sacks, should then be burnt in front of the Capitol building. Such a disregard for huge sums of money would intimidate the competitors.

As an "older American", I am

As an "older American", I am sitting here cannibalizing my child. In other words retired and supporting him while he goes back to school. Paying for his health insurance and ours, is costly. Yet, I am now told I cannot take some of the drugs as prescribed by my physician unless I pay the full $150 and $107 per month for them. Now I take 4 times the dosage to get a generic as ordered. I doubt this physician is on the drug dole. But I know the plan provider and administrator is I have a letter with fine print stating they "may" both get rebates from a certain drug manufacturer. I too fear the "end of life" comments I have heard. I am getting close enough to that time to be concerned. I would be glad to pay taxes for health care for all but I am cautious about supporting much that comes from our government. I fear Congress, as well as some of the present administration, are more concerned about maintaining the capitalist system than the will or good of the people. The fear of being called socialist, or for some, cutting off income will keep them from coming up with a really good plan.

>05:21Larioke=if this is

>05:21Larioke=if this is your view, THEN GET OUT THERE & DO SOMETHING--YOU ARE NEEDED instead of waiting for the Perfect President=that is the meaning of DEMocracy=We the PEOPLE. It is worth it for you & your chilre, & everyone else.

The real problem is

The real problem is lobbyists having the ability (i.e., money) to buy our legislators. Until that changes everything stays the same.

Where are the buses to DC?

Where are the buses to DC? When we wanted to stop the Viet Nam war, we left our hometowns and took buses -- all across the nation -- to DC and marched on Washington! Folks, we need to get off our butts and away from our screens and scream bloody murder. We need at least a few million in this march. It won't work to stay home and do it in our little corner of the world. This and a nation-wide sick-out will get the attention we need.

Exercise in futility. The

Exercise in futility. The problems with health care are the problems endemic of the system. A big picture reference is required... The system is rotten to the core. Your politicians are bought and paid for. Your media and information services lie to you 100% of the time. You aren't given any valuable information. Instead you're drowned in mindless 'entertainments' that enable the manipulation of your reality into a twisted parody of life. Deception is marketing and bribes are lobbying. The double speak is EVRYWHERE. You are deceived by those that ordain to 'serve' you, in every way possible. The systems deception is so ingrained in most people’s consciousness as 'normal' that it is pure futility to even try to bring their attention to its existence, let alone to any kind of state able to attempt to combat or reform it. The simple fact of the matter is that the entire edifice of your society is based on deceit. Politicians, marketing, sales, media, entertainment, all have that common thread. They all lie all of the time. Voting won't make any difference. Marching won't make any difference. Protesting won't make any difference. You were signed away by your 'representatives' on Dec 23 1913. Your Democracy ended on that day. The vast majority of you still haven't woken up to the consequences of that decision. The symptoms of which are becoming more apparent all the time. They OWN YOU people. Wake up and smell the roast. It's your own fat that's cooking.

Health care costs are

Health care costs are strangling small business and driving Americans into bankrupcy. We need a single-payer system to get costs under control. The insurers, the banksters, and the arms manufacturers, are sucking every last dime out of this country

We nurses are others who

We nurses are others who want a public option will hold a rally and also lobby on Thursday, June 25 in Washington DC. The action is sponsored by Health Care For America Now, a coalition of over 1000 organizations. Go to their web site and join us in DC on June 25th.

We the People, not

We the People, not corporations, vote. Public option and universal (single-payer) health care have to be debated, and at least one of them has to be adopted.

A democratic push toward the

A democratic push toward the common good: This is not only about health care. It is about our capacity to regain public influence on public policy. It is about democracy trying to recover from a government willing to subvert its own democratic laws and policies and indulge the corruptions of torture. Everyone who wants the country to move away from authoritarianism should weigh in on this.

It won't happen here... It

It won't happen here... It won't happen here.. I tell you my dear... single payer won't happen here. Millions will die, but Americans buy the lie. The solution is clear... it won't happen here... Now see if Obama doesn't change the health care system... He won't! It ain't that kind of party. This game will be the same. If you don't have health insurance, get used to the pain. Marches? Protests? Just more entertainment. Nothing is going to happen. Obama knows what happened to Hillary.Harry and Louise are American Leni Riefenstahls only without conscience, and with blood on their money filled hands. Message to Obama: It's over Rover, so move on to the next trick for your masters.

To "Where are the buses," I

To "Where are the buses," I add, why aren't we as active on this important issue as we are on so many lesser ones? Yes, let's get out there and get our voices heard. President Obama MUST deliver what Candidate Obama promised. And we MUST get behind him, and into the faces of the Repugnicans and their wealthy cabals.

If you want to get on the

If you want to get on the bus for the big lobby day in DC on June 25th, go to the Health Care for America Now website: http://www.healthcareforamericanow.org/ and get connected to the coordinator in your state. The next few weeks is our big chance to try to get what we want. This chance may not come around for another 15 years or longer. That's how long we've been waiting since the Clinton proposal. It's time to jump in now with both feet!

YES, this is the defining

YES, this is the defining battle of the Obama presidency. THIS is when the voters will learn if they elected THEIR candidate. The mega lobbies must be derailed, or democracy is dead.

The AMA is now officially on

The AMA is now officially on the record as promoting death and disease for millions. They should remove their snake and cross and replace it with a gilded dollar sign.

If a lot more than the 50

If a lot more than the 50 million uninsured dropped their health insurance they'd have a problem. Perhaps that would be more effective than getting everyone on a bus to Washington. Cheaper, too.

The good health of a

The good health of a nation's citizens is directly related to the national wealth. It is an investment of the highest order to support President Obama's new health care program. Serve yourself and get behind Obama. Health care should be guaranteed to every American citizen. The pharmaceuticals and AMA should be encouraged to break their own monopolies. Greed is good when it serves the common need. Be greedy, serve your nation in her time of need. Thank you, for the good work you do. Sincerely David Rothauser

Once again we have

Once again we have government for and by the monied interests; let the peons (patients) "eat cake." Those who profit mighty from the misfortune of others look likely to once again win big with a huge tax payer “bailout” through the subsidization of the bloated, private, for-profit health insurance scheme that has victimized so many for so long. Our chaotic, mismanaged, mangled approach to health care has cursed tens of millions of Americans with one of the worst health care delivery systems in the industrialized world at the highest price. In far to many cases care is inferior or unobtainable for average people. With what is about to happen in Congress, aided by facilitation from the Whitehouse and lubricated by the health care oligarchs, it will get even worse with an apartheid like system that tiers health care by social and economic class, controlled by unregulated, near monopolistic insurance companies to the determent of everyone. Every shred of evidence points to the only true solution as some form of Single Payer, non-profit based "insurance" that covers, through a fair tax structure, every single American. It is best for our public health; best for our economy; best for our democracy and best for our future. All else will increase costs while reducing patient choice and quality of care for most American's and lead us further into the morass of economic crises and collapse. Wake up! Single Payer now!

Who is endorsing the June

Who is endorsing the June 25th March? Are the single payer advocates participating? I do not see information about the march at their websites. People are asking around the internet. People who posted about the march please post more information or get single payer websites to endorse you, so we know it's legite. John Conyers, California Nurses Association, Singlepayeraction, Michael Moore, etc.

10 % covers actual defense,

10 % covers actual defense, I'm almost positive Congressman Kucinich told me this during his extraordinary campaign. Okay, let the real cost of defense be 25% of the current defense budget. If we put 75% of the defense budget into health and debt retirement, the country would regain a major measure of formidability. And, tell me, who is the judge of what a modern culture should spend on health? Forget endless war and suddenly health spending isn't as big a problem as somebody thinks it is; suddenly, a lot more is doable.

No Doubt we need to create

No Doubt we need to create the change in our profit based Health Care System, and Obama is our lead. AND we must stand up against the "Hypo-critical" Oath of the medical profession. The Drug Companies and Food Companies are allowed to sell us detrimental products. Double Talk is an understatement...We are just money producing mushrooms to Corporations and Government. TIME FOR CHANGE!

Sign this petition for single payer being circulated by Senator Bernie Sanders of Vermont. Senator Sanders introduced the Senate version of H.R. 676. http://sanders.senate.gov/petitions/index.cfm?uid=7fd59f2e-88e1-477a-8eaf-762a5b050809

The solution is in front of

The solution is in front of our noses: HR 676 is making its way through the House of Representatives ...it promises Single Payer universal care, the removal of profit-making insurance companies from the system, free choice of physicians, continuing non-profit or public ownership of hospitals, coverage of ALL medically necessary services, including dental and mental health, long term care, etc. No copays or deductibles, with cost estimates BELOW what we currently pay. Why in the world are we talking about anything else? Because a large part of our government is bought and paid for by the health care industry!

We're being ruled by an

We're being ruled by an unprincipled and despotic corporate elite that isn't accountable to anyone. Our politicians campaign on whatever gets them to DC and then cash out. We have no one to run for these offices but shakedown corporate sellouts. The solution is not political.

Harry> Way ta go

Harry> Way ta go Louise! Louise> Wat ta go harry! The Dems introduced an 852 page plan, 852 pages, that's a grat thicket in which to hide and kill off stuff right? Harry>Way ta go Louise! Yeah the terms and usage of "essential plan" vs. "enhanced plan" will be to confusing for most staffers to figure out. We've got it knocked, have a walnetto!

I am a licensed mental

I am a licensed mental health clinician. I do a lot of hospital consults and work with many docs. This is a frontier area (Eastern Montana). While there are a handful of big business docs who see money in place of patient needs, the majority are holding their heads in frustration that patients cannot either get or have coverage for medical care they need. " Medical necessity" these days has everything to do with putting the right codes on the diagnosis or procedure and nothing to do with access to care, quality of care, or good health. This is not caused by docs looking for big bucks on the whole, but by insurance companies and big pharma looking out for sustaining "zero risk" and obscene profit margins. The AMA is, sadly, a reflection of special interests fueling policy and "acceptable medical standards of care"

It is obvious that in places

It is obvious that in places like Iran, Serbia, the Ukraine, the common people don't take it from the powers that be. Here in the Land of the Sheep I doubt anyone is going to take it to the streets if the House of Lords, otherwise known as the Senate, does away with any public plan option for any health care "reform" bill that Obama may or may not sign. Of course full scale riots should ensue, the offices of the Senators responsible bombarded by the mob, if you will. Of course the powers that be would then GET IT, just as Milosovic GOT IT when he was hauled off to the Hague.

Pray tell? Who does this

Pray tell? Who does this lobbying money actually go to? Do these millions of dollars contributed by big business to reps in congress and senate actually go to the members of the house and senate for their own personal use? Or does it go to a general fund for the good of the country or does it go to a business support system of some kind, is it considered revenue? Please explain.

Let each one of us take a

Let each one of us take a pledge today: not one red cent for private for profit health care for the insurance industry! If the elites pass a mandatory for profit "universal"health care simply refuse to buy any such policy. Let's fill the jails until this nation passes a publicly funded single-payer that takes the profit out of health care and truly covers everyone. Notify your senators and congress persons of your intent. Write a letter to your local paper to inspire others.
