Man-made climate change is already lifting temperatures, increasing rainfall, and raising sea levels around the United States - and its effects are on track to get much worse in the coming century, according to a report released this afternoon by federal scientists.

The report, "Global Climate Change Impacts in the United States," covers much of the same ground as previous analyses from U.S. and United Nations science panels. It finds that greenhouse-gas emissions are "primarily" responsible for global warming and that rapid action is needed to avert catastrophic shifts in water, heat and natural life.

What's different this time is the report's scope - at 196 pages, the report attempts to present the fullest picture yet of the threats to the United States - and its timing.

It comes out as Congress is considering a mammoth bill that would impose the first national cap on emissions, and then seek to reduce them sharply over the next 41 years.

That bill, supported by Obama, has spurred some Republicans to say that they are not certain climate change is happening. It has also been criticized, from both sides of the aisle, as a measure that would impose significant new costs on energy use and manufacturing.

Though not explicitly a response, today's report says that the evidence of global change is "unequivocal." And, in language stripped of the usual scientific jargon, it sketches out some of the costs of doing nothing to bring down emissions.

"The projected rapid rate and large amount of climate change over this century will challenge the ability of society and natural systems to adapt," the report says.

The report was unveiled at a news conference including John Holdren, Obama's chief science adviser, and Jane Lubchenco, administrator of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    Among its findings:

  • The average U.S. temperature has risen 2 degrees Fahrenheit over the past 50 years and might rise more rapidly, between 4 and 11 degrees, before 2100. Temperatures will be nearer the upper end of this range if global emissions are not cut.

  • Precipitation in the United States has increased an average of about 5 percent over past 50 years. In the future, computer models show that northern areas will become wetter, and southern areas will become drier, especially in the West.

  • The heaviest rainstorms are even heavier now, with the amount of rainfall in major storms having increased 20 percent nationwide over the past century. The hardest-hit areas have been the Northeast - where heavy storms are now 67 percent heavier - and the Midwest, with a 31 percent increase. In this definition, the "Northeast" includes the District and Maryland but not Virginia.

  • Extreme heat waves will also become more common. A temperature reached only once in 20 years until now might be reached every other year or so by the end of the century.

  • Sea levels have been rising along most of the U.S. coast over the past 50 years, increasing up to eight inches in some places. That trend is expected to continue as warmer temperatures melt glaciers and cause the ocean to expand like a wooden door on a hot day. Some of the worst-hit areas are expected to be along the East Coast, owing to a confluence of rising seas and subsiding land. Seas might rise 2.3 feet near New York City and 2.9 feet in Hampton Roads.

    And it's not just CO2 that's

And it's not just CO2 that's driving climate. The approach has to take everything into account - which the IPCC and this administration have NOT. Visit icecap.us to get the full picture.

Go here to see a summary slideshow, key findings, or to download the entire report: http://www.globalchange.gov/publications/reports/scientific-assessments/us-impacts. It's great that the Obama administration is communicating with the public about this problem, after the Bush administration did everything they could to hide the truth, including censorship. What very few people realize, or will admit, is that we are already committed to at least 1.7 degrees centigrade further rise in temperatures from the greenhouse gases we have already released. That is based on physical facts, such as how long the gases will stay in the atmosphere. The last time the world was that hot, there were mega-droughts, lasting several decades each, in what is now the South-West US. The midwest was a desert, literally. In other words, our nation's breadbasket will produce no wheat, corn, soy, or other crops, and California, which currently produces the majority of our fruits and vegetables, will not be able to produce anything, or to support its large population. Australia will suffer a similar fate. The mountain glaciers that China and India depend on for their food production will melt. Monsoon patterns will change too. The result of all this will be mass starvation on a scale the world has never seen. Remember, this is what is already inevitable even if we release no more gases. But we know we will release more, and so this is just the first step. We ABSOLUTELY MUST reduce our emissions as quickly as possible, or we risk an even worse future, possibly a huge mass extinction that will include the human species. What Congress is thinking of passing at this point is a joke. They are sacrificing the future of life on this planet in return for political gain. That is a crime worse than genocide. We need something drastic to wake people up, but what? Any ideas?

    Fighting climate change and

Fighting climate change and corporate interests is like a couple of mice fighting a herd of elephants. The media is reporting some of the facts but still running with the elephants. Some democrats are even giving lip service to climate change, but the elephants still rule.

    Icecap does exactly that -

Icecap does exactly that - caps the issue with a generalized, albeit woefully weak debunking of Gore's statements, and ongoing blurbs bashing any suggestions that we, as a global community, meet this 'natural phenomena' with any urgency - it's just all so 'normal' - happens all the time - fill 'er up! The site's 'professionals' are a loosely connected group of naysayers - credentials, of course - the usual 'mixed bag'. The content suggests the 'natural occurring fluctuations' in our climate we are experiencing are simply to be expected and accepted, and any rush to 'respond' is, more or less, unnecessary and /or futile. There are the usual, cherry-picked and dubious factoids and commentary from an equally questionable jury of like-minded poo-pooers. They do refer to 'peer reviewed' research, but no links. Most importantly of all, no 'full picture'.

    Brian is correct with

Brian is correct with everything he said. Unfortunately, people are not listening. They are in denial that it is already happening. I work with a guy who is too lazy to get up one hour earlier so he can take the bus to work - so instead he drives when he doesn't have to. Every time someone does something like this it helps the problem to worsen. We are all responsible for global warming and we all must do our part to help and also put pressure on the government to do more. They are still only taking baby steps where we need to take giant leaps. It is truly sad that people will not wake up until it is too late. The entire planet will pay for man's greed and laziness...

    There is NO long-term

There is NO long-term solution to global warming other than significant reduction of the human population. We could do it if there was a global policy of one woman-one child for a couple of hundred years. We could start that along removing ALL financial benefits to anyone that had more than one child, and imposing serious penalties to those that had more than two children. We could also offer serious enticements to those that sterilised themselves before creating any children: tax credits, preferential hiring, loan programs (mortgage, student, etc). I've written these ideas to several newspapers and magazines in response to their stories about pollution, global climate change, and the next mass-extinction, and never do I see my note in print. Ah, well...

    I would argue that we

I would argue that we Westerners need to do some uncomfortable things if we're serious. Things like not eating meat, not driving, and consuming as little as possible. The issue is lifestyle not population. It takes only a tiny bit of resource to raise a Bangladeshi child, it takes an enormous amount to raise as US one. I think it's a slippery slope when folks start talking sterilization because in the past, when these measures have taken place (and continued up until the 70s), it was primarily poor non-white women who were targeted. On some Indian reservations nearly 80% of the women of child-bearing age were sterilized by these kind of programs. If one looks very closely at the global birth-death figures, one can see that problem is not that too many babies are being BORN, it's that more resourced folks aren't DYING. Medical care has increased to the point where life expectancy is longer than ever before in history. The amount of money and resources spent on end-stage medical care is ridiculous. Noone wants to say that the problem lies with Grandma living too long and everyone wants to blame other folks for 'breeding too much.'

    When they take into

When they take into consideration the chemtrails they are spraying all over the world I might listen. Do you think they are not playing with the weather and have been for at least the last 10 years. If you don't know what chemtrails look like go to you tube and see what they are doing to our once beautiful blue sky. We have slowly become conditioned to see a white sky. They are being reported and photographed all over the world. They can't be denied, you can see them once you open your mind. They are real. What do you think the harm they have amassed with aluminum, barium, and cadmium in the spray over the years. Neurological disorders, cancer, and depression. We are being lied to.

This subject is so moronic I

This subject is so moronic I have few words to describe the "global warming" hype. The planet has been through a lot worse than us. A few plastic bags and aluminum cans are not going to make a difference. Just another scam, except for the imposed "Frankenfood", "Franken-air", and "Franken-water" courtesy of the loving industries/governments of industrialized nations. Now THAT stuff is real, geo-engineering, etc.
