Obama and Anti-War Democrats

Days ago, a warning shot from 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue landed with a thud on Capitol Hill near some recent arrivals in the House. The political salvo was carefully aimed and expertly fired. But in the long run, it could boomerang.

As a close vote neared on a supplemental funding bill for more war in Iraq and Afghanistan, The San Francisco Chronicle reported that "the White House has threatened to pull support from Democratic freshmen who vote no." In effect, it was so important to President Obama to get the war funds that he was willing to paint a political target on the backs of some of the gutsiest new progressives in Congress.

But why would a president choose to single out fellow Democrats in their first Congressional term? Because, according to conventional wisdom, they're the most politically vulnerable and the easiest to intimidate.

Well, a number of House Democrats in their first full terms were not intimidated. Despite the presidential threat, they stuck to principle. Donna Edwards of Maryland voted no on the war funding when it really counted. So did Alan Grayson of Florida, Eric Massa of New York, Chellie Pingree of Maine, Jared Polis of Colorado and Jackie Speier of California.

    Now what?

Well, for one thing, progressives across the country should plan on giving special support to Edwards, Grayson, Massa, Pingree, Polis and Speier in 2010. If we take the White House at its word, they may find themselves running for re-election while President Obama withholds his support - in retaliation for their anti-war votes.

But it's not enough to just play defense. We also need to be supporting - or initiating - grassroots campaigns to unseat pro-war members of Congress.

In the Los Angeles area, the military-crazed and ultra-corporate Congresswoman Jane Harman will face the progressive dynamo Marcy Winograd in the Democratic primary next year.

Harman's vote for the latest war funding was predictable. But dozens of Democrats with longtime anti-war reputations also voted yes. Among the most notable examples were Oregon's Peter DeFazio and Washington's Jim McDermott, who apparently found their anti-war constituencies in Eugene and Seattle to be less persuasive than the White House chief of staff.

"White House aides worked the halls during the hours before the vote, and chief of staff Rahm Emanuel called some lawmakers personally," McClatchy news service reports. "DeFazio, who was undecided and wound up voting yes, said he talked to Emanuel by phone for about five minutes as Obama's top aide explained the administration's strategy in the war on terror."

This is a crucial time for anti-war activists and other progressive advocates to get more serious about Congressional politics. It's not enough to lobby for or against specific bills - and it's not enough to just get involved at election time. Officeholders must learn that there will be campaign consequences.

When progressives challenge a Democratic incumbent in a primary race, some party loyalists claim that such an intra-party contest is too divisive. But desperately needed change won't come to this country until a lot of progressive candidates replace mainline Democrats in office.

On behalf of his war agenda, the president has signaled that he's willing to undermine the political futures of some anti-war Democrats in Congress. We should do all we can to support those Democrats - and defeat pro-war incumbents on behalf of an anti-war agenda.

What a depressing

What a depressing development. Obama continues to disappoint in the "national security" area. Have you also noticed something else? He hasn't lifted a finger to repeal the "Patriot Act", the FISA "reforms" or any other legal excrement from the Bush era. Has he adopted their policies now?

And here I thought I was

And here I thought I was voting for Obama to stop the wars! To really change the financial system that brought middle class Americans to their knees! To make real healthcare changes like universal healthcare not a public option! And last but not least to really change the trajectory of global warming!! As a life long Democrat,I'm embarrassed, ashamed, and defeated! Next time I vote, it will not be for a Democrat.

I suppose Obama has been

I suppose Obama has been told he can have some reforms as long as he doesn't try to control the controllers.

I haven't given up hope yet,

I haven't given up hope yet, choosing for the time being to remain patient, but I certainly wonder why Obama hasn't taken bold steps to end the war, reverse the Bush era grabs for executive power, lived up to his promise of transparency in government, or stood up to some of the powerful lobbying groups in defense of the middle class. Was all the campaign rhetoric only that? I'm not yet willing to say yes, but my patience is wearing very thin. I sincerely hope this administration earns the continued support of the voters who put him in the White House rather than the people who make huge monetary contributions to Democrats in Congress.

It seems as though those who

It seems as though those who say Obama must be pushed by progressive grass-roots effort are not only correct, but the job is actually tougher than imagined in the face of the establishment. If you are not a part, in action or donations, of a group or groups taking on special interests in one or more specific areas, for God's sake become part of the action. This is evidently our only chance to force Obama's hand into fulfilling even a small portion of his campaign promises, which by the day grow more disturbing in their contrast to his actions.

Anyone "surprised" by

Anyone "surprised" by Obama's position on Afpakistan wasn't paying attention during the campaign & debates. I disagree with him here and think we need to keep pressure on the admin to end these military operations asap. But let's not forget Obama is getting us out of Iraq. He has ordered to have Guantanamo closed. He has already shut down "black holes" abroad and issued an order against torture. This is not at all a continuation of Bush policies. And what's the alternative? Throwing away your vote and helping the Republicans to get into power again?? No thanks. Let's support Obama, who is our only realistic hope for positive change, and let him hear about it when we don't agree with him.

I spent 32 years in

I spent 32 years in government. The Repuplicans have spent the last 25 wagging their tails and playing stupid human ticks to get us into the mess we're in now. I too wanted our troops, ALL of them, never to go into Iraq, or Afghanistan, AND I would have liked them all out on January 22, but life doesn't work that way, neither do wars. I think we're seeing more progress than given credit. Obama has the sense, so far, to back away from Iran and let THEM handle themselves. Unmanned vehicles shouldn't be used again in our current situations, but the "defense" read "profit" industry is asking for huge amounts for more of them. With a plate fuller than any president in history, even FDR, has tried to handle at one time, maybe we can be of more help to carry the load, rather than stick our foot from under the table to trip the waiter?

The Blue Dogs who futz

The Blue Dogs who futz everything up, threatening reform and progress: they get not even a scolding. But anti-war people who put the guy over in the promaries and helped elect hi, we get threats. I worked my ass off for Obama. Next time he can get the conservative leaners to sweat up and down every hilly street. Screw this. At least with Bush he did as he said he would do. He used his popularity to get everything he wanted short of destroying Social Security. Probably Obama will do that now, too. He seems hell-bent on appointing Republicans (like Leech, yuck ick argh), letting Republicans run his war policies, even arguing spurious ridiculous bigoted points against gays. I would have voted for McCain if I wanted watered down same-old backwardsness. Threaten the anti-war movement? When he starts threatening the turncoat Blue Dogs and the Republican obstrictionists, I will come back perhaps

This is why I voted for

This is why I voted for Cynthia McKinney, Nader while he had some good ideas as usual he wasn't even trying to build a third party. While the greens have much to do be a real option, they do offer some interesting candidates and offer real choice on many important issues.

I'm not at all surprised by

I'm not at all surprised by former senator Obama's odious behavior. When he voted for the FISA reauthorization prior to the election, it was clear that he is merely a more eloquent version of George Bush. I have the same visceral reaction to Obama as I had to Bush. When I see their lying faces come on the TV, I instantly change the channel.

three strikes he's

three strikes he's out! 1-won't say no to torture 2-won't say no to war 3-yes, to wall street Obama does not pass

I second the comment by eval

I second the comment by eval @ 21:02, but believe the "reforms" that will be allowed will be no more than different lipstick on the pig of status quo. It would be worthwhile for folks to read Walter Karp's books "The Politics of War", "Indispensable Enemies" and "Liberty Under Siege" -- the Rethuglican Party and the Demoweasel Party are essentially no different. Their main objective, as political parties, is to retain their powers -- mostly inside the Beltway, but over state and local subdivisions, too, as those are the primary sources of foot-soldiers and dispensers of patronage. The state and local party branches also serve to stifle dissent within party ranks. Ralph Nader has been right for a very long time: there's no essential difference between the parties.

The global empire is intact!

The global empire is intact! Long live the empire.

The war machinery seems to

The war machinery seems to overpowered Mr. Oh.. too. Wish we had a Peace Department and 1/10 of the DOD's budget for it to see what we can achieve with peace efforts.

For all of you who didn't

For all of you who didn't listen to all of us screaming this would happen you deserve every ounce of corruption you are getting dished up. (us being Ron Paul, Kucinich, and McKinney supporters) WAKE UP and realize that this false left/right paradigm is keeping your eyes off the real problem: bankers, war profiteers, mainstream media and a corrupt broken system ALLOWED to keep operating by ALL OF US. For those if you who still believe in Obama just keep drinking the cool aid till you wake up homeless on the continent your forefathers founded.

"Let's support Obama, who is

"Let's support Obama, who is our only realistic hope for positive change, and let him hear about it when we don't agree with him. " Yeah, because your only choices are Republican or Democrat.

"On behalf of his war

"On behalf of his war agenda, the president has signaled that he's willing to undermine the political futures of some anti-war Democrats in Congress." Norman: When are you going to own up to the fact that you backed Obama for the presidency? This is one area that Obama wasn't lying about before taking office: he never claimed to be anti-war. When are you going to see that electoral politics isn't where power is exercised? The only way to end these wars is the way that they were ended in the 60s: mass movements in the streets.

I am saddened by Obama and

I am saddened by Obama and the mainstream Dems for selling out for war. But, I am proud of my congressman for being one of the freshmen who voted no. I went to his office today to make sure he knew he was being thanked for his courageous action.

As a french observer of US

As a french observer of US politics, Obama's attitude is not a surprise,I'd definitively support those who say NO.

I agree partially with the

I agree partially with the previous comment, β€œObama has three strikes against him.” Here are ten examples of Obama morphing into Bush: (1) He is following Bush's Wall Street Bailout policy (trillions given away with no accountability or transparency). (2) Following Bush's Iraq serge policy and Iraqi forced pull out schedule. (3) Will not investigate or prosecute Bush and his administration for torture and lying us into the unnecessary Iraq war. (4) Said he wants to close Guantanamo, but is not doing it. (5) He will run tribunals at Guantanamo (Kangaroo Court). (6) He will indefinitely hold some Guantanamo prisoners without due process Good Bye Habeas Corpus). (7) He will not end "Don't Ask Don't Tell.” (8) His Department of Justice filed a brief defending the Defensive Marriage Act using the same nonsensical derogatory reasons. (9) He will not release Abu Ghraib prison pictures of torture and rape. (10) White House will not release a list of visitors since Obama took office under the Freedom of Information Act. Obviously, Obama sold out to the same power brokers during the election that controlled Bush and has relentlessly reneged on his campaign promises since taking office. Consequently, we are the ones that put Obama and the democrats in power and we can remove them. First, stop donating to all the contrived democratic emergencies. Second, vote for and contribute to real progressive democratic and third party candidates. Last, get in the streets and demonstrate for change, like the Iranians (it works here too).

I live in Europe and studied

I live in Europe and studied the USA Patriot Act and FISA as part of my Master's thesis a few years back. I was shocked at how elastic the sections are and how it (in my view) infringes on civil liberties. Wben Obama was elected, I was sure he was going to take steps to have this horrible, rushed piece of legislation repealed. If not completely then at least in part. I'm so sad to see that nothing has happened on that front.

If Obama succeeds in giving

If Obama succeeds in giving us a Single Payer health care program that starts right away and is fair and transparent, I'll give him some slack on the other disappointments. I'm keeping my eyes on THAT prize.

A lot of posts here seem to

A lot of posts here seem to be by GOP minions trying to undermine Obama and only pretending to be third-party supporters. If you can't see the difference between Obama and Bush, you are either a liar or a fool. Bush would have appointed Sotomayor? Bush would have extended federal benefits to gay couples? Bush would have delivered that speech on Islam? Bush would have ordered the closing of Guantanamo and the black holes? Bush would have reduced secrecy on presidential records? Bush would have pushed for healthcare reform? Bush would have raised fuel efficiency standards? Bush would have regulated credit card companies? Bush would have revoked the global gag rule? Bush would have allowed stem cell research to go forward? Etc. etc. The difference between parties and presidents is clear as day.

1) The charge of no

1) The charge of no transparency or accountability is false. 2) Obama was advocating a withdrawal from Iraq timeline long before the Bush admin embraced the idea. 3) But more importantly he's getting us out of Iraq and has ordered the end of torture. 4) He has ordered the close of Guantamo. It's Congress that is dragging its heels. 5 & 6) See 4. 7) But he's extending federal benefits to same-sex partners, something the GOP would NEVER do. 8) Obama himself disagrees w. the DOJ on this one absolutely. 9) He understands those photos are the best terrorist recruitment tool in the universe. 10) But Obama has reduced secrecy in the case of presidential documents. A little nuance here, please? The old rhetoric of there being no difference between the two parties is so contrived and false...

This has ONE NAME written

This has ONE NAME written all over it-- Rahm Immanuel. It's great when the Bully is working for the things you want... but it won't always be like that. Obama will discover the downside of putting Immanuel in the position of "bad cop" sooner than Later. ^..^

Obumma!

Obumma!

Core right wing Obama

Core right wing Obama supporters and posters lay an honest claim to the opportunistic bankruptcy of American liberalism and progressivism when they attack those who criticize Obama's treachery from the left. Certainly there are 'differences' between the parties of Bush and Obama, but they serve only to delude the ignorant and morally corrupted Democratic party base to underwrite neo fascist rule without a guilty conscience. Fundamentally these individuals are moral ciphers who fail to see that both American parties, 'nuances' to the contrary, clearly fall under the rubric of right wing institutions: I would go further, while the Republicans are honest fascists, the Democrats are ersatz neo- fascists, without the courage to cop to it .It is now safe to say what is no longer a canard: All Obama supporters are right wing. That they elide the designation of outright fascism, is of little comfort. The blood is on their hands, irrespective of their inability to see it.

Some self-styled

Some self-styled "progressives" simply dial out anything positive. Their relentless focus is on negativity, and they desire nothing but to be disgruntled and negative. A projection of self-loathing onto the entire world? It's no wonder their third-party candidates cannot even break 2%. The rest of us are working to change the world through the available channels, not simply throwing tomatoes and shouting meaningless names from la-la land.

guantanamo being closed

guantanamo being closed means zilch, the prisoners are to be moved and not brought to trial. The cia is controlling the drones dropping bombs in Pakistan read; private citizens waging war on a country we have not declared war on. the worlds largest embassy in Pakistan. Obama never said he would end the war on terror did you not listen. for single payer then against. he has done almost nothing except take tax payer money and give it away, hooray! and worst of all it now cost over $750,000,000 to become president! the two most important things 1.single payer 2 campaign finance reform get the money out and maybe we'll get what we want. Time to fight!

The degree to which

The degree to which progressives are upset with the right wing pro war pro torture moves of ObBushma is far greater than the Obama spin merchants would have us believe. The tired lame lie that honest criticism of Obama from the left "must be from closet GOP operatives" is laughable and reeks of desperation. Anyone paying attention is fully aware that Obama is continuing and expanding ALL of the insane criminal Bush policies. Only fools and those too terrified to face this reality still believe in the fake messiah.

None of this conflation of

None of this conflation of Obama with Bush (or "fascism") is "honest criticism". It's a bunch of hooey eventuating from ideological preconceptions. "There is no difference between parties". Just keep repeating it and ignoring the facts. Meanwhile, back in reality, we can see that Obama's nominations, healthcare push, stance on torture, Islam, climate change, etc. are light years from where we'd be under a McCain/Palin regime.

#1! Joblessness!

#1! Joblessness! Unemployment is now officially around 10%, when you count all the people not currently receiving unemployment compensation you can double that. Over 15 million are unemployed - which is also figured low to make us feel better. The U.S. is losing between 345,000 and half a million jobs per month. We're dying out here! Where's the help for those of us who've lost jobs, homes, cars, who live off our families or welfare? Welfare's running out, people, and so is unemployment. Whenever I read that healthcare is the #1 point, I just laugh. Healthcare is usually offered through JOBS, ain't it?

Of course, Obama has done

Of course, Obama has done some good things and I would be reluctant to call anyone who blindly follows him a right-wing fascist. However, his accomplishments are token gestures compared to what he and a democratic majority in congress could be doing. I wish I could say truthfully that the Bush policies and the Obama policies, so far, are light years apart, but Obama has surrounded himself with some of the people who caused the economic meltdown, Bush people head the Department of Defense and conservatives are in a variety of prominent positions. Secretary of State Clinton (my Senator) has surrounded herself with neocon advisers. To give you an example of the stupidity of some of his appointments, John McHugh a republican congressional representative from a district near me was recently appointed Secretary of the Army. He has a record of being a Bush lapdog for the last eight years. By what stretch of the imagination is this warmonger qualified? Anyone who calls liberals who criticize Obama ideologues sounds a lot like the right-wingers that called liberals unpatriotic when they criticized Bush and the Iraq war. Personally, I call them as I see them; if Obama is doing something good for the people, I will commend him for it. On the other hand, I will speak up if I see him caving on health care (by the way single payer was never on the table and we will be lucky if we get a real public option). Furthermore, selling out to big oil and coal (clean coal what a joke) on the energy bill (in the current bill there is a little known provision that prevents the EPA from stopping polluters). Contact your reps to strengthen the energy bill and health care.

Obama has disappointed the

Obama has disappointed the anti war people who voted for him; he has disappointed the greens who supported him to get better policies on global warming and something done about energy policy. Obama has disappointed those who are in the slow food movement with his pro-agri biz selections of Vilsack and others. Obama's giving something in the range of 13 trillion dollars to wall Street and Banks with no strings attached has pretty much destroyed the currency of this country. What is there to like?

It is simply wrong to

It is simply wrong to threaten Democrats who are voting as their constituents demand.

To defend Obama from charges

To defend Obama from charges of being a "Bush clone" and a "fascist" is hardly a matter of "blindly following" him. As any honest observer can see, it's a simple matter of stating the truth. As with any authority figure, it's our duty to hold Obama's feet to the fire and criticize his failings. Let's do so honestly, though, with honest language and not fail to praise his many achievements either. Two further points: First, there has really been nothing much "surprising" about the directions Obama has taken on any particular issue--not if you were paying attention to his campaign. He's a shrewd pragmatic centrist who doesn't allow his personal commitment to liberal values (empathy, etc.) blind him to what it takes to hold together a coalition that will get him reelected. Those who profess to be "surprised" are simply projecting their desires onto Obama instead of assessing correctly who he is and the situation he confronts. Second, even so, it's amazing that a country like the US (look around!) has such a leader. And given the realistic alternatives, we should be mighty glad of where we are and the opportunity we have. As Obama himself has said--echoing Voltaire--"Don't allow the perfect to become the enemy of the good."

People are finally figuring

People are finally figuring out that the one beating them in the head is a Democrat but it still hurts like when the Republicans were at the bat. (The flush of endorphins is receding.) Don't you understand that third parties aren't allowed to equally compete? Until that changes nothing else will. That and our for profit election system. Corruption never looked and smelled so good as when it is legal and is even touted as "free speech." But only if you have the big $$$$. Obama was just the nicer version of the same kind of poison and rot of fascism in this nation. He is nicer and is younger but he is still poison to the Republic. His agenda isn't ours. We can still plunge into a Great Depression at any time. Nothing has been done to stop it, just delay. Obama, like Reagan, are good at BSing you into feeling good while you are raped. Like Clinton, Obama is making a few feel good maneuvers while the red meat of the quite coupe continues by the shadowy PTB. (Seen the 1934 Business Coupe attempt.) Will we be able to force Obama to do anything we want? Not so far.

The Democratic and

The Democratic and Republican Parties are the two wings of the Corporate Imperialist War Party which has been running this nation since the coup of 1963. Until we have publicly financed elections with instant runoff voting, the electorate has only the illusion of choice. If the sheeple don't wake up and take action, the USA will become an authoritarian neo-feudalistic police state.

The rhetoric of self-styled

The rhetoric of self-styled progressive radicals is unrealistic and counter-productive. After the next election, the prez ain't gonna be Nader or Kucinich or whomever. It's gonna be Obama or his GOP challenger. If you want to change this thing, don't work to undermine the better of two alternatives. Some of you just hate authority in any guise and would turn on even Nader if he was elected (no danger of that). "No difference between parties" blah blah blah helps accomplish nothing. Get lives and mobilize.

One key to ending the war

One key to ending the war crimes against humanity is to take the power to issue money away from the central bankers. This is who is directing the professional actor in the white house.

In a defining moment in US

In a defining moment in US history, 32 brave Democrats voted against the war reauthorization act. The "progressives" who defected - lamentably under Barney Frank's leadership - don't get it. The dollar, now hurtling toward disaster, is issued by a private consortium of the biggest bankers, which was given an outrageous private monopoly over the issuing of money. Our elected representatives have no control over them, and they have no loyalty to us. Like it or not, we, the people and our representatives, can't save their dollar. The IMF, which has never been a friend to working people anywhere, can't save it. We must not sacrifice our core interests and convictions on its alter. Make good note of who the 32 are - and their brave leaders Barbara Lee, Jim McGovern and of course Dennis Kucinich. These are the ones who are clear about whose side they're on, the ones still standing after all the threats and blandishments, the shell games and payoffs. These are the ones we have to defend, with all our might.

Here's a cheer for Lee,

Here's a cheer for Lee, Feingold, McKinney, Kucinich and all the good guys who continue to stand against any more war. The Loyal Opposition must continue to be loyally in opposition. And the rest of us must continue to contact Congress in our oppositional loyalty.

All of the whiners who say

All of the whiners who say you voted for Obama to end the war do not know how things work. It's not good, but the PENTAGON owns America; if Obama had promised too many Socialist things, and it had even seemed like he would implement from Jan. 21st (altho' he behaves as if he really does understand Checks and Balances, unlike his predecessor), the Fabled Military/Industrial complex would not have let him win (stop underestimating them/it), much less let him survive. If you pout and throw tantrums and deny him your vote, you will get a Gingrich or a Huckabee in 2012 and then you will have much to whine about; continued war, completely eliminated civil liberties, trashed economy, ecological disasters! If you really want change, you MUST start at the local level, and be content for your great-great-great-grandchildren to reap the reward. Adults know there is no instant gratification.
