Grand Old Parachutes

George W. Bush crawled out of the puckerbrush last week to deliver a speech in Erie, Pennsylvania, in which he took a poke at President Obama. "I told you I'm not going to criticize my successor," he said, before doing exactly that. "I'll just tell you that there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat and I don't believe that persuasion isn't going to work. Therapy isn't going to cause terrorists to change their mind."

Ah, yes, the eloquence we've all missed so much since January. "I don't believe that persuasion isn't going to work" has to be tall in the running for first-ballot induction into the Gibberish Hall of Fame, and that quip about terrorists in therapy absolutely pegged the needle on the Irony Meter, as ABC News pointed out. "Interestingly," reported the network, "it was the Bush administration that sent some Gitmo detainees to a Saudi jihadi rehabilitation camp - called the "Prince Mohammed bin Nayef Centre for Care and Counseling. To decidedly mixed success."

Well, go figure. It wouldn't be vintage Bush without a few hearty dollops of mangled verbiage combined with maddening factual inconsistency, now, would it? It almost makes one nostalgic for the daily brain cramps our former president used to deliver with such gruesome consistency. Well, no, actually, not really.

In all likelihood, a day will come when the Republican Party will recover from the dazzling carnival of buffoonery, insanity and self-destruction it has become over the last three years, but that day has neither come nor looks to anytime soon. For the time being and until further notice, mostly because no new leader has stepped forward without sounding like an Appalachian snake-handler far gone on the still, the GOP is the party of George W. Bush. There's bad; there's worse; there's worst, and then there's that.

Greg Sargent, on his Washington Post blog, pointed out some data buried in a recent Wall Street Journal poll that must have every breathing Republican strategist grinding their teeth in despair:

The overall popularity of the Republican Party has now dropped below even the abysmal level of approval enjoyed by Dick Cheney. The poll found that 26% of respondents have a very positive or somewhat positive view of Cheney, up eight points from April. Meanwhile, it found that the GOP overall is viewed very or somewhat positively by only 25%, down four points from April. Okay, the difference is within the margin of error, making this a statistical tie. But still, this is pretty awful for the GOP, given that for a long time Cheney's historic unpopularity seemed to define a kind of low-water mark among Republicans.

There a couple of takeaways here. First, it appears that Cheney is doing a better job of making his own case than the current crop of GOP leaders are doing on behalf of the party as a whole, even though he's no longer in office. And second, it gives the lie to the notion that Cheney's ongoing media tour is helpful to the GOP overall, as some party leaders have publicly claimed to think. In reality, he only seems to be helping himself.

All is not lost in GOP Land, however. Those loyal Republicans bemoaning the current state of their party will be heartened to know that the people who personally detonated the GOP through rank incompetence, rampant avarice and lust for power are actually doing just fine, thank you very much.

Dick Cheney is shopping his memoirs around to publishers and asking for multi-millions in return, which some idiot will probably give him. Karl Rove just got a seven-figure deal to write his own Bush-era memoirs. Condi Rice just signed a three-book deal reportedly worth $2.5 million. Michael Mukasey, Tommy Thompson and Harriet Miers have all landed lucrative gigs at prestigious law firms, and Ari Fleischer somehow went to work for the Green Bay Packers.

Richard Armitage and Michael Hayden have landed on the board of directors for a pair of large defense contractors. Only Alberto Gonzales stands out as the lone Bush administration official unable to cash in on his time in government; his book deal was roundly rejected by publishers, and no law firm has seen fit to add his name to their roster. Can't imagine why.

And as for George W. Bush himself? Nothing less than $7 million for his memoirs, apparently to be titled "Decision Points," which will contain "a dozen of the most interesting and important decisions in the former President's personal and political life." Laura Bush has also inked a book deal for $3.5 million, meaning the former First Family will be getting more than $10 million to tell us what it was like to annihilate the Republican Party and grievously damage the country while eating off the best White House china.

The Republican Party is less popular than Dick Cheney, and Dick Cheney is about as popular as the shingles, but the folks who ran the GOP's train off the tracks and delivered the nation into this multifaceted mess are doing quite well in the aftermath. One is left to wonder how the people who voted for them feel about that. It's a damned safe bet they're not doing nearly as well as their erstwhile leaders are. Some might call that karma, but nobody should be surprised.

It's the George W. Bush Way, after all: I got mine, screw everyone else, amen.

Soon we should enjoy the

Soon we should enjoy the incarceration of this mad Prince of our corrupt and disgusting royal family. May he and they live in the infamy they have so eagerly nursed as egotistical and aristocratic (along the lines of the famous stand-up joke) despots who have no regard for humanity or humanitarianism. Wait'll Holder gets a load of the "White House Memos".

RIP GOP The last time I can

RIP GOP The last time I can remember admiring any Republican politician was. . . (OK, there must have been a time.) But seriously folks, do we need this anachronism of a party anymore? Imagine how much better off we'd be with a Democratic Party and a Labor Party or a Social Democratic Party and NO Republican Party. We'd still have our two-party system. Have these folks not totally exposed themselves as the party of avarice, greed and corruption? A very good case could be made for the fact that rather than a true political party, the GOP is actually a criminal protection syndicate, much like the Mob. It commits bribery, blackmail and murder on a massive scale. There hasn't been a war our nation has been involved in during my lifetime that didn't enrich whole industries controlled by the Republican oligarchy. War and mayhem are good business for the likes of Boeing, GE, Halliburton, Raytheon. . .all huge GOP contributors. And the Wall Street bailout has taken taxpayer dollars and paid off the very swindlers who brought on the crash. Are we nuts?!! Another sad truth is the Democratic Party is nearly as corrupt but still a good stretch from the state of arrogance and nastiness that defines the GOP. My hope, my prayer is that a healthy majority of voters will see this picture with more clarity as time passes and that the GOP joins the likes of the Whigs and the Know-Nothings in history’s dustbin.

I was listening to Obama's

I was listening to Obama's press conference earlier today and thinking that surely my recollection of how much disdain I had had for news conferences when W was the president was exaggerated. I used to sing loudly enough to drown him out until I could get to the radio or TV to turn him off. I found myself actually listening to Obama today and realizing that he made sense and took his time to consider his answers to questions. So thanks for the reminder that W really was as bad as I remembered. Educated, verbally adept leadership isn't everything, but it sure is an improvement.

I think bush and cheney

I think bush and cheney would like nothing better than to slip into obscurity (with a lucrative dictated book deal or two). Something tells me there's a reason why the only subjects they ever discuss publicly are those that "may" involve crimes committed by their administration. Could it be that they aren't buying The President's current wimpy behavior? Is it possible that they really are worried that crimes they "may" have committed could be punishable afterall? If someone finally had the stones and lack of personal corruption to actually go after them, it would be great if President Obama's hands remained unstained by the war that would follow. I think doing the right thing is sometimes the hardest thing possible. I would not feel ashamed, however, if our last president became the first in U.S. history to end up behind bars. In fact, I would be the proudest, flag-wavingest, American you've ever set eyes on. It's my dream that I think is scaring the hell out of bush and cheney.

You mean there are still

You mean there are still dupes who will listen to this guy with credibility that would put a back alley thug to shame? No wonder he could get away with murder.

How, just how, did this

How, just how, did this dufus ever get elected to President of The United States of America when he was, and is, totally incompetent to lead an organization of any kind? And how, just how, is this dufus still not in jail for all the evil doing he has done, here and internationally. But then there is that quote from Catch 22 that explains it all precisely: "Nothing made sense. And neither did anything else." -- Our Justice Department is an oxymoron, and The Constitution stands for what, precisely? Power and Corruption seem to rule this country. Will the one good man please stand up and wave?

"Democrats" are in power

"Democrats" are in power now, and the u.s. is still torturing people, still handing money over to corporate crooks, still supporting national and international criminal financial institutions ["Fed", WTO, IMF etc] Still waging wars for profit. Still fighting FOR insurance companies, corrupt drug companies and the defense industry. The u.s. is a fascist nation, regardless of which of the two corporate-toady parties are pretending to be in power. If anything the Democrats are worse, as they are better liars about their selling out....or pretending to be outraged while secretly making deals with the people they're pretending to be outraged about. WE NEED A THIRD, PROGRESSIVE PARTY.

We are all dupes to think we

We are all dupes to think we have a two party system. We have only one-Big Corporations! I f we fail to impeach them, we will all be living in some idiots monoculture dream land. We should read these books and learn how to squeeze through the system.

That anyone still gives a

That anyone still gives a forum to Bush/Cheney is astonishing! Both traitors, war profiteers and destructive evildoers. Both should be tried, and If convicted of treason, and war crimes, should pay the ultimate price; a price they cavalierly imposed on nearly 4,500 dead American Soldiers, with an illegal war of choice!

Bush is correct when he says

Bush is correct when he says "there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat "... you torture anyone like they have tortured people there and you will turn even the mildest human into a vengeful killer who will kill those who did inhuman things to them.... if not they would be saints. How about a little waterboarding experiment on you George to see how you react.... go back and hide under your rock just like your father has done in the past years. Nothing good every comes out from under a Bush.

It's always heartening to

It's always heartening to see the total moral and mental vacancy of the criminal GOP, BUT even though we now have a good man in the presidency we MUST remain aware that nearly half of the democrats in office, especially in the senate are no better at all than their republican counterparts. Reelecting these democrat criminal swine will NOT help the country nor Obama to bring about any meaningful changes. Our new president deserves a worthy congress. Vote OUT these slimy incumbents IN THE PRIMARIES in 2010.

I have been reading William

I have been reading William Pitt on truthout.org for what seems like a very long time--through the horrifying, seemingly endless Bush Administration, and beyond. He never ceases to amaze me. Thank you, thank you, thank you Mr. Pitt!

With all due respect to my

With all due respect to my fellow commentators, it appears there seems to be a lack of basic understanding of what this is all about. What we are witnessing is the melting down of this system. Therefore, everything and anything goes. The cries of disappointment with our new president ignore the fact that he is part and parcel of the establishment, and that he is a politician. Now we have a cry for a progressive party. Never will happen, because starting a new party requires the kind of commitment that is lacking in our nation. Therefore, folks, get used to it, or as they told us after 2004, get over it.

Whaaat? George Bush again?

Whaaat? George Bush again? He just refuses to go away!

"If someone finally had the

"If someone finally had the stones and lack of personal corruption to actually go after them ..." ## ... that person would killed off, literally if doing so figuratively would not keep Cheney & Co from paying substantive penalty of any kind for their actions. One person alone can't turn the tide, not even the President, and that's why the Cheney cabal will never pay for their treason--because there are more people willing to work together to keep them from punishment than there are people who are willing to work together to bring them to justice.

Two main things occurred to

Two main things occurred to me in reading this article: 1. "I don't believe that persuasion isn't going to work" Those that supported the Bush Administration wouldn't understand that there is anything wrong with that sentence. 2. In order for publishers to pay the enormous dollars for the numerous books being penned by the Bush derelicts, someone has to buy them to cover that cost and then some. Being someone who despises all those mentioned won't be spending a dollar on any of their books and won't be reading them unless I get the book for free. The idiots who will spent all that money are Republican, brain dead people who seem not to mind getting their brains beaten and scrambled. In the long run, it hurts all of us. Unbelievable that Cheney has a poll rating above a zero. William Rivers Pitt's articles are outstanding in their depth, so I could go on but I'll just say, thank you Sir for the privilege of being able to read your words.

What can I add to the

What can I add to the accolades already on record for William R. Pitt? He combines penetrating insight, eloquent diatribe and genuine moral fervor as few commentators (perhaps Matt Taibbi, William Greider and a few others I'm not thinking of right now) are capable of. This particular piece is, characteristically, hilarious and appalling. One hopes that the GOP's woes are terminal, but I also used to believe that Nixon in 1968 (and Bush, in 2004) couldn't get elected president. Anyway, Bill, keep up the wonderful work. It's meant a lot to so many of us.

How´zbout ¨I´ll just tell

How´zbout ¨I´ll just tell you there are people in AMERICA that will kill American people at the drop of a hat...¨ & to start, we could say the legislators, ´representatives, all the lobbyists & the $BCEO surplus insurances who deny healthcare their insured, & to 50million AMERICANS+ [20million children], also extreme right-wing conservatives who target health professionals & others who blow up buildings [Oklahoma City not forgotten]...
