Sanford admits to a love affair with an Argentine woman. "The bottom line is this: I've been unfaithful to my wife." He apologizes to his family and the people of South Carolina.

South Carolina's wandering governor, Mark Sanford, said today he had an affair with an Argentine woman and that was why he disappeared without telling anyone he went to South America.

"The bottom line is this: I've been unfaithful to my wife," he said. "I've developed a relationship with a dear dear friend from Argentina."

Speaking at a nationally televised news conference, Sanford apologized to his wife, his four boys, his family and the people of South Carolina for his disappearance and for leaving his staff and family to make up excuses for his absence. Sanford's staff had insisted at one point that he was off hiking on the Appalachian Trail.

"There are moral absolutes," said Sanford, one of a cast of possible GOP presidential aspirants.

The announcement was the latest development in the bizarre case of Sanford's disappearance on June 18. It was unclear whether Sanford's comments would placate his critics, who have been up in arms.

Among the questions have been why didn't he tell other officials that he would be out of pocket? Why didn't he tell his family? Why did his top aides finally say that he was hiking, only to be left with egg on their faces when he surfaced after a trip to Argentina?

"All we've had is lies, lies, lies," South Carolina state Sen. John Knotts said in a televised news conference earlier today. There have been "coverups where the governor is and where the governor is not," Sanford's fellow Republican said.

"I don't have a problem with the governor taking some time off," Knotts said. "But the people in South Carolina need to know that somebody is at the helm, not just a staffer."

Because of his presidential aspirations, Sanford has been one of the frequent targets of the national Democratic Party, which has trumpeted his disappearance since June 18 as an example of erratic behavior. Sanford was a visible opponent of President's Obama's economic stimulus package, at one point insisting he wouldn't accept the $700 million set aside for his state. Sanford was forced to relent after opponents won in court.

Sanford, 49, arrived at the Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport this morning and told the State newspaper that he had wanted a break after the pressures of a tough South Carolina legislative session. He said he had considered hiking the Appalachian Trail but changed his mind at the last minute and went to Buenos Aires.

"I wanted to do something exotic," Sanford explained earlier, before admitting the affair, calling Buenos Aires "a great city."

The problem is that word of the trip never got to aides or even his family. In recent days, South Carolina's lieutenant governor, nominally in charge with the governor out of the state, said he had no idea where Sanford was. Sanford's wife, Jenny, said she had no idea where the governor was but insisted she wasn't worried.

"He was writing something and wanted some space to get away from the kids," she told the Associated Press before heading off with their four sons to the family's Sullivan's Island home -- over Father's Day weekend.

Sanford's staff stuck by the hiking story, saying the governor was somewhere along the 2,175-mile Appalachian Trail and couldn't be reached even by cellphone. Aides this morning have refused to discuss the matter.

Heading to South Carolina from Georgia this morning, Sanford said: "I don't know how this thing got blown out of proportion."

Sanford has been a colorful figure on the South Carolina political scene. He once put a spending clock outside his office to illustrate how quickly a proposed budget would spend state money. He also brought pigs to the House chamber to protest pork he said lawmakers had put in a budget.

Still, Sanford has been a well-respected governor, head of the Republican Governors Assn. and a strong conservative among those who are potential 2012 GOP presidential aspirants.

The presidential sweepstakes has been less than charitable to Republicans so far. Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal saw his stock drop after a disastrous television appearance; Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin has been embroiled in feuds with her state legislators and with late-night talk-show host David Letterman; Nevada Sen. John Ensign admitted he had an extramarital affair; former House Speaker Newt Gingrich was forced to back step after he used the word "racist" to describe Sonia Sotomayor, a nominee for the Supreme Court.

Sandford's disclosure comes the same month that another Republican, Sen. John Ensign of Nevada, revealed that he also had had an extramarital affair.

Enough already, when is too

Enough already, when is too much information, just good ole' "too much information". I don't really give a crap, if they are not doing their job, then get out, I don't need to hear about another affair......okay, government officials are "real" people. Let's move on.....the fact that this guy refused the stimulus money and was overruled is news. Enough of the garbage.

The Republican Party - the

The Republican Party - the gift that keeps on giving, especially to the comedians.

Perhaps the best approach

Perhaps the best approach for the Right and others would be to accept adultery as a family value to keep these sobbing (mostly Republican) men off tv. Seems it's already okay with most of congress .

What a surprise -- yet

What a surprise -- yet another sanctimonious, Bible thumping, member of The "Family Values in Jesus Party" takes a WIDE stance on hypocrisy...LOL!

Sorry folks, pause to think

Sorry folks, pause to think just a minute what Hannity, Rush, et al, would say if this was a Dem. family values guy gone off for an affair. Whew. Muhcy gracious, ah reckon. I'm working on a country western song, what rhymes with governor, Argentina, Appalachian Trail, family values, and right wing conservative pres. candidate in waiting ? Hep me, heah.

Well, Gov. Sanford,

Well, Gov. Sanford, apparently you can't help who you love. Is that ok just for you or can we include everyone?

He wasn't doing his job.

He wasn't doing his job. They were lying about where he was, read the article again . . . But I won't be so quick to throw stones! At least he wasn't doing it in his backyard and in his wife's bedroom. He was on a trip!! Never heard of it hiking before? Have you. . .

(modified) Who gives a

(modified) Who gives a flying deletable expletive about what some Carolina governor did between beers in Buenos Aires? Leave that (s-ome deletable expletive) to friggin' Fox! >Mark? >>yeah >Mark, this is Jimmy, Jimmy Swaggart, lemme tell ya how this should play. When you say " I have been unfaithful" you gotta say it this way: "Oh I have been unfaithful ta mine own wife and unta thee Oh looord!" You will have ta be teary eyed for a few weeks and be seen holding hands and praising the lord, but I figure you can be back livin' it up in Buenos Aires within about 6 months, well that's my experience anyway. Maybe you want ta come on my show and chew some carpet before you get after the crumpet again?" >> Thanks for your support Jimmy. I'll give ya a call from Buenos Aires.

Uh, that should read:

Uh, that should read: "There are moral absolutes," said Sanford, one of a cast of FORMER possible GOP presidential aspirants."

The reason that it's news

The reason that it's news when a prominent political figure is caught getting his weasel greased is simple enough under any circumstances - but when it's a sanctimonious, holier-than-the-rest-of-us proselytizing demagogue, the story becomes much more interesting.

S.C. should toss this guy

S.C. should toss this guy out of office, just as N.Y. did with Spitzer. And Congress should do the same with at least a few of their "wanderers." So much for all the purveyors of (haha) family values -- this one even walked out on his 4 kids for Father's Day.

It DOES matter what he was

It DOES matter what he was doing in Argentina - he left his job without leaving any way to contact him, he lied multiple times, and he behaved in a way contrary to the "family values" platform that the Repubs have used to get into office. If he were just Joe Schmoe, it wouldn't matter, but he's a public official, and a sanctimonious one at that, so his conduct does matter. And he admitted the affair, so it's not like reporters had to go out of their way to discover it.

This is too sad. As a

This is too sad. As a former resident of South Carolina, albeit one who voted Independent, I had some respect for Sanford, but this tears it. South Carolina deserves far better than an errant, mid-life crisis bolter.

How about the mass media

How about the mass media spending as much time analyzing his Roadblock Republican policies as they are in breathless blather about his affair. It's not about who or what you know, but who you're having sex with. Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn, because it has no effect on me, the economy, health care or the illicit war in Iraq. Like all his ilk of Roadblock Republicans, he is a two-faced hypocrite and bald-faced liar. He deserves a minimum-wage job with no health care as his penance.

to all the guys who are

to all the guys who are having trouble keeping their pants zipped-In case you havent noticed some of us are having trouble just buying pants let alone keeping them zipped. you guys dont have a monopoly on that sex drive thing and many of us girls are damn gorgeous but i dont know one mother that would just disappear from a responsible job on mothers day or any other day and believe me i have been there and sent many a jerk back to his wife with a severe scolding. Whats with you? i am sick of all of you. families need fathers ad mothers and the country needs workers. Go to Buenos Aires after you RESIGN.!!!!!!!!

It's always the loudmouth

It's always the loudmouth GOP "leaders" who seem to get caught dipping their wicks where they don't belong (right, Newt?). Invariably, it seems to happen after they've engaged in long, bitter campaigns of attempted nullification of Democratic efforts at progressive legislation, and loud, virulent spates of anti-Democratic rhetoric that, in light of their leaps into the extramarital pool, only serve to point up their arrant hypocrisy while clearly demonstrating their moral poverty. They're pathetic, at best, and it amazes me that there is anyone left who would believe a word that spews out of their malignant pieholes. I thought up better lies than the ones Sanford told when I was 9 years old, and I didn't have the responsibility of running an entire STATE, then. Yet, this guy has the gall to castigate and criticize the President for policies that would immensely benefit the citizens of his state, one that sits mired on the bottom rung of every quality-of-life indicator there is. If he doesn't resign, he should be impeached.

Adultery is really a private

Adultery is really a private affair: highest form of treason to those that are closest, most loving, most supporting & also most reliant upon your moral leadership & his apologies & restitution needs to be to THEM, not the public. To be gone from his job, for several days is derelection towards those he serves & those who trust him. That apology needs to be to SouthCaarolinians & restitution to THEM. His ´..wanted to do something exotic..´ is an excuse he & we won´t take from our children.Gov Marc Sanford are of the ´you-have-to-go-to-my-church-or-else- crowd that PREACHES ABSTINENCES ONLY--NO THANKS &maybe you can kindly explain the rational of all that once you are married & having relations??? MAYBE YOU CAN ALL GET OFF SENATOR KENNEDY´S BACK NOW!!!!!

Well there's a world of

Well there's a world of difference - as the Republicans would say - between lying under oath as Bill Clinton did - and well let's see: Newt Gingrich - serial polygamist and unfaithful to at least two wives. John Ensign - see above Larry Craig - mister wide stance who was merely accused... Then there is the hidden saga of John McCain that only a British newspaper dared publish. But enough already. As a former minister all I can say is: woe unto you...you are like whited sepulchers pleasant without but full of rot within' (my translation/paraphrase) But I forget: None of these men lied under oath. So they can't and shouldn't be impeached. LOL HaHaHa

In today's media, where

In today's media, where every hangnail is obsessed on, how he thought he could just disappear is beyond me. I find it interesting that Republicans seem to have hippie values when it comes to extramarital affairs, or at least a European attitude. Imagine if Edwards had won the primary battle, been nominated, and his affair came out, and he and his wife say she was ok with it, knew all about it? The double-talking media would never relent in their holier than thou moralizing on the attack on all-American values and righteous godlinous. But once again it's their super-moralist who is really a sexual libertarian, a free-spirit. Go figure.

Reporting this "news" seems

Reporting this "news" seems beneath Truthout, especiallly since it will be covered ad nauseam everywhere else for at least the next 10 days. Aren't there much more important matters we should all be talking about?

I don't think his affair is

I don't think his affair is anyone's business, except him and his family. I find this aspect of American political dirt-digging tiresome. I do think, however, that a Senator should be accountable as to his whereabouts. What if there were an emergency in South Carolina? Can you imagine if no one knew where the governor of Louisiana was during Katrina? That, in itself, whether the representative is a Republican or a Democrat should be a clear enough sign to the voters.

Hey, he's a Bilderberger,

Hey, he's a Bilderberger, all in a weeks work. Freedom is, knowing, you AND your neighbors, Eat until the next harvest, Drink until the next rainfall, Enabling us the Energy to build strong safe communities.

Not for nuthin', but where

Not for nuthin', but where in this story, at least, is Sanford quoted as saying he had/is having an affair with a woman? His "relationship with a dear, dear friend from Argentina" has a whiff of spin to it. Don't care who he chooses to be with, but are some of these guys ever going to have a moment of clarity? If -- if -- there is more "gotcha" to the story, he should just tell everybody now, and abandon the last vestige of hypocrisy. If somebody else already has raised this, my apologies.

Presenting...the latest

Presenting...the latest entry in the Republican Hall of Shame -- Maaaaark Sanford!

This isn't

This isn't news. International corporations along with their sycophants in the u.s. govt. are murdering and enslaving people around the world for not embracing predatory capitalism. That's news.

HYPOCRITE DOMINO THEORY:

HYPOCRITE DOMINO THEORY: Yes, yes, I agree with some other posters. The private indiscretions of OUTRAGEOUS HYPOCRITES like these should remain private. The private indiscretions that should be shouted from the mountain tops are those that involve people who DON'T belong to "GOD'S OWN PARTY". Look, by simply being a member of "GOD'S OWN PARTY" and associating themselves with that mentality, these Moses wannabes SET THEMSELVES up to closer scrutiny than the rest of us more imperfect and less judgmental humans. It doesn't matter whether or not a specific "GOD'S OWN PARTY" candidate personally adheres to this philosophy, unless he's publicly denounced it. They ALL belong to an exclusive club of people who don't mind casting the first stone and intentionally play up this holier-than-thou mentality. Look at the right-wing outrage over John Edwards. I'm still OUTRAGED by the impeachment of President Clinton. He did NOT commit perjury, because perjury ONLY pertains to lies about the subject of a trial. The subject was Whitewater. Unless Lewinsky had something to do with Whitewater, PRESIDENT Clinton was allowed to lie all he wanted about his private life. What ever happened to Whitewater, by the way? I think there's a hypocrite domino theory at work here and I, for one, would like nothing better than to see EACH AND EVERY ONE of these holier-than-thou hypocrites publicly humiliated. That's the ONLY WAY to make private lives become private once again for the rest of us. That's the only way to force people who claim to want government out of our lives, to stop forcing their religious opinions on the rest of us.

Folks here who angst over

Folks here who angst over why this is news or why TO covers it should realize: the news is hypocrisy to the nth degree. Not only the hypocrisy, but the cojones to claim the moral high ground, time after time . . . after the great GOP moralists get caught with egg on their faces. Sickening. Disgusting. The bible thumpers should condemn these sick wacko hypocrites instead of embracing them because they (closetedly) condemn gay marriage or any of the other buzz-word "causes" of so called conservatives.

What is surprising about

What is surprising about this is that he actually came back, will beg forgiveness from the Christian Right, and run for President in 2016 after he cleanses himself. All will be forgiven and he will just be another in a continuing series of Repubican turds. And note that he did not (yet) resign his office. Maybe he should divorce this older woman and marry Crystal Palin, and become Vice President or some such thing. This stuff DOES shock and amaze!

This is a personal matter

This is a personal matter between this man and his family and none of our business. His whereabouts as a senator are what matters but personally, I don't particularly care whether a political figures are faithful to their spouses as long as they're doing their jobs correctly. While some may claim it's a sign of overall character, I respectfully disagree and would like to see less sensationalism over this sort of thing and more coverage of actual news that affects our country and citizens as a whole.

Jesus, who are these guys?

Jesus, who are these guys? They pound the table trying to get us to listen to their pap about the declining moral air in America and that only the GOP can set a straight course to salvation. Then, they drop like crows from bird flu and have to be scraped from the sidewalk. I've always thought that the ones who thump the bible the loudest are the greatest sinners.

To Hypocrite Domino Theory,

To Hypocrite Domino Theory, I agree with you about the hypocrisy of those who beat bibles, dig up affairs about others, and are then discovered to be doing the same things themselves. Frankly, though, I didn't think the information on John Edwards was relevant, either, to the public. It was between him and his wife and family, and had nothing to do with his work as a politician. It was also over and done with, and in his past. I know people felt betrayed, and felt that he had an obligation to tell everyone else before running for President. But I didn't agree with that, either. That affairs make or break careers seems ridiculous to me. That it should reflect in any way on the people who work for the person who had the affair seems irrational to me, too. And now, that this man is 'fessing up, not only to his wife, but the state of South Carolina. Surely it's a confession only his wife should be hearing. I don't condone the personal behavior, but I think we're too wrapped up in bedroom watching, in general, as a nation. Perhaps you're right, though. And it's well deserved come-back. But the main problem with this guy's behavior -- distinct from John Edwards -- is that his whereabouts as a governor were unavailable. On the Appalacchian Trail with no cell phone connection? ........... well ... maybe it's a reflection on just how meaningful a higher position in American politics is, to begin with. Our Senators, our representatives, our governors .... essentially, out to lunch on the American public. It doesn't make a difference where they are. As this man, with his years of experience in Washington, well knew ...

It's a national security

It's a national security risk. That's the most important point. Not knowing where he was or how to reach him, that is, apart from the other stuff ... that was grotesque professional misconduct as a governor of the United States.

What is the DEAL with public

What is the DEAL with public confessions of privately wayward politicians ? i don't want to know who this guy is boinking unless he's spilling state secrets to Mata Hari. My sympathy to his wife and family who are being dragged into something that should not be public.

OH MY GOODNESS! So another

OH MY GOODNESS! So another Bible thumper gets exposed. What EVER happened to FAMILY VALUES? So who really cares anyway, especially when you are unemployed, can't afford to get sick, and could lose your home any minute?

Adultery may be private in

Adultery may be private in private citizens but lying, cheating, betrayal and hypocrisy in any sphere of life indicates a general weakness of character that is VERY relevant to whether someone should or should not be elected to public office. Maybe, like Catholic priests, all people who aspire to public office should be single. Lets put that in the Constitution.

Both are ex Wall Street and

Both are ex Wall Street and Real Estate players. The issue speaks more to the integrity of this 'public servant' than to anything else. It is all about what he can get over on his wife, his constituants and anyone else for that matter. It makes me all warm and fuzzy to know that the all about me attitude prevails on wall street and in politics. Yep, this politician is looking out for the best interest of the citizens of his state,,,not. He will grovel his way back, she is an heiress to a fortune is she not? The GOP base needs to understand that this guy is in the company of the likes of Newt and McCain and a pile of other so called selfless public servants who manipulate and deceive in their own self interest.

Leaving work for days at a

Leaving work for days at a time without giving notice or an explanation is cause for termination with any employee, and is very irresponsible for a Governor. Add to this the fact that he expounds family values yet does exactly the opposite of what he preaches and you have a ruined political career for very good reason.

The troubling thing is the

The troubling thing is the frequency of these events, like it is the way these people are, with no values, no sense of devotion to family. If you have no loyalty to your own wife and children, how can you have loyalty to anything? Mark Sanford is a liar, with no values, it is as simple as that. And I would say the people around him knew that and accepted it as their way of life. It all disgusts me.

My country is being

My country is being disgraced By leaders who have no shame, The middle class is being displaced while they play their wanton game. They line their pockets with the tears of those who wanted to live a dream, and now our homes are being sold, while our leader dances with an Argentine.

I think this article is

I think this article is important and well crafted; Mark Sanford's behavior brings up important policy questions. However, please have the decency to refrain from printing his recently discovered emails. Even if they were composed on a government email system, the line really has to be drawn somewhere. Thanks.

As much as it is way too

As much as it is way too easy to point and make fun of yet another person of privilege and power falling from grace, Mr Sanford has fallen into grace. Why? Well, I think that this man is having a moment of profound 'seeing'; seeing that all of the things that he has operated and based his life around, like his narrow definition of faith, God and country are all false when he looks deep from within the well of the insanity that comes from being in love. Please do not misunderstand me, I deplore hypocracy, especially that of the Christian Right!!! I have appreciated that he has NOT done the usual disingeneous spin-o-rama dance like all of the other fools 'caught' stepping outside of the bounds of matrimony and their wingerdinger creeds. I believe that we are seeing a man who is free-falling his way into some kind of heartbased freedom and perhaps, enlightenment. I hope he resigns as govenor and gets on with his life.

I kind of like the idea of

I kind of like the idea of someone not resigning because of a sex scandal - I don't know the man's politics, but I mean if he were in the business of screwing the country, a sexual impropriety would matter. I would like to see an end to all the ridiculous torpedoing of politicians because of sex - unless they were pedophiles. His Biblical allusion was painful and embarrassing - imagine defending yourself by comparing to someone who had a soldier killed to cover his tracks, I'm truly embarassed for the man for making that comparison - that is worse than the affair.

Sanford is just another

Sanford is just another "family values" Repulbican, who blames everyone else who strays until he does it.
