The Girl From Ipanema

Dozens of people have been killed by suicide car-bombers in Iraq over the last several days in an ominous upswing of violence that gives lie to the recent veneer of stability in that nation. The streets of Iran run with the blood of protesters seeking a fair election and the end of their country's oppressive fundamentalist regime. North Korea has threatened to fire long-range missiles at Hawaii over the Fourth of July if anyone so much as looks funny at one of their weapons-laden cargo ships on the high seas.

Tall and tan and young and lovely
The girl from Ipanema goes walking
And when she passes, each one she passes goes ... ah

    Ah, indeed.

There are other things in life besides mayhem, madness and butchery, a fact South Carolina's Republican Gov. Mark Sanford was kind enough to remind us of this week. There is irony of the purest ray serene; there is hypocrisy like a house on fire, and there is perfect comedy, and when a man like Governor Sanford takes the time and energy to combine all three, the magnificent absurdity of it all reminds us of the joy that still exists in this cruel and crazy world.

So, yeah, Governor Sanford fell off the planet last week, disappearing entirely from the grid over this past Father's Day weekend. Neither his wife nor his staff would say for sure where he was beyond some blurry allusions to writing a book on the Appalachian Trail - and, by the by, it should be noted that the person who initiated the "Where Is Sanford?" press frenzy is a Republican enemy of the South Carolina governor, because this story wasn't weird enough already - until his car was discovered in a parking lot at the Atlanta airport. Except it wasn't his car, really, but a state-owned vehicle Sanford had apparently borrowed from one of his security guards.

When she walks, she's like a samba
That swings so cool and sways so gentle
That when she passes, each one she passes goes ... ooh

Flash forward to Wednesday, when Governor Sanford got up on his hind legs and delivered one of the single most preposterous press conference performances in the history of the universe. He said he was sorry, very sorry, sorry to you, to me, to the people of South Carolina, his wife, his sons, Jesus, all the saints and your little dog, too, because he had not, in fact, spent the weekend writing a book in Appalachia. No, Governor Sanford had been an entire hemisphere away, crying for five days with a girlfriend in Argentina.

The conservative Washington Times was kind enough to explain the crystalline hypocrisy buried within what could be dismissed as another instance of a politician having a problem with his fly. "Republicans' family-values platform often invites charges of hypocrisy," explained Times writer S.A. Miller on Thursday. "It happened when conservative pundit and former drug czar William Bennett was discovered in 2003 to be a gambler. In the late 1990s, during and after their pursuit of President Clinton on impeachment charges for a sexual liaison with an intern, several Republican luminaries acknowledged they, too, had indulged in affairs, including pro-life leader Rep. Henry Hyde of Illinois, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich of Georgia and former Rep. Bob Livingston of Louisiana, who resigned just before assuming the speaker's chair. Mr. Sanford voted in favor of three of four articles of impeachment against Mr. Clinton."

Wait, what? Governor Sanford, that jet-setting Lothario, whose passionate taste for marital infidelity was strong enough to hurl him thousands of miles across the planet for a date with his mistress, was in favor of impeaching President Clinton for lying about sex? "I think it would be much better for the country and for him personally (to resign)," Sanford said of Clinton in September of 1998. "I come from the business side. If you had a chairman or president in the business world facing these allegations, he'd be gone."

When Republican Congressman and impeachment champion Bob Livingston was exposed for cheating on his own wife later in 1998, Sanford said, "The bottom line, though, is I am sure there will be a lot of legalistic explanations pointing out that the president lied under oath. His situation was not under oath. The bottom line, though, is he still lied. He lied under a different oath, and that is the oath to his wife. So it's got to be taken very, very seriously."

Three weeks before Wednesday's epic press conference debacle, Governor Sanford gave an interview to Fox News, during which he was asked about the Clinton impeachment directly. "It was blown into a huge constitutional issue which if a president's lying, it's a big deal. It is a constitutional issue," said Sanford. "But it missed the larger point of human nature. You ask any guy, particularly one in office, you've been screwing around on your wife - maybe there's 1 percent or maybe there's 2 percent or maybe there's 5 percent. But 95 percent of the time, whoever it is, is gonna say 'no.' And so, I think the public said no matter what Clinton did, whether he did or he didn't do whatever it was that happened with Monica Lewinsky, is that guy gonna stand up and admit it. They said no, he's not."

Eloquence? Perhaps not, but at least Governor Sanford sounded as if the strength of his convictions and integrity regarding marital fidelity was genuine. If you want true Sanfordian eloquence, however, you must peruse the recently-released emails Sanford wrote to his lady friend. In one, for example, he implores her to "please sleep soundly knowing that despite the best efforts of my head my heart cries out for you, your voice, your body, the touch of your lips, the touch of your finger tips and an even deeper connection to your soul." Or, you can read the other Sanford email to his lady friend that says, "I could digress and say that you have the ability to give magnificent gentle kisses, or that I love your tan lines or that I love the curve of your hips, the erotic beauty of you holding yourself (or two magnificent parts of yourself) in the faded glow of the night's light - but hey, that would be going into sexual details ..."

But I watch her so sadly
How can I tell her I love her
Yes I would give my heart gladly
But each day, when she walks to the sea
She looks straight ahead, not at me

Thank you, Governor Sanford, for reminding us that life can be good, that life can be saccharine sweet, but above all else, that life can be really, really, really, really funny.

Well that certainly tops the

Well that certainly tops the list of self-awarded deserving Fathers day gifts to self!!! Big question, to a man,a father-steadfast-defender-of-right-wing-conservative-AMERICAN-FAMILY-values against the ¨ ´safe-sex´ cartel attempting to kill abstinence education...¨--> Senator Mark Sanford, did you practice safe sex w/ condom use EVERY time, for your safety, your partners´s safety, & your spouse´s safety?? Now you do understand, your actions have put you on the other side of the debate fence??

My understanding is that his

My understanding is that his car was at the airport in Columbia, SC, not ATL. However, he was seen at the ATL airport.

This is a huge hoot. What a

This is a huge hoot. What a smooth-talkin' dude that Sanford is.

Also priceless in the

Also priceless in the emails: Sanford telling his chick there are all these pesky things that may keep him apart from her for a while - like he'll be busy for a the whirlwind tour around the world with his family.

Nice image, The Girl from

Nice image, The Girl from Ipanema, but your geography off. Ipanema is in Brazil, not Argentina. When are we going to stop acting surprised at the lordly, hypocritical behavior of our politicians and financial/industrial titans? They make the rules, we follow them.

Yes, funny in the way a

Yes, funny in the way a Cornell law student asked me what I thought of the Clarence Thomas - Anita Hill scandal. I told her that it is a classic example of bait and switch for the Keating Five and the S&L swindle. She paid for and picked up her VW and told me I was a cynic, I told her her law professors need a heavy dose of reality if that is all they have to discuss at university. Funny how the Bush and McCain families profited from the bailout, politically and financially. Funny, she practices international law and I am still a mechanic.

Yawwwwwwwn. Can we move on

Yawwwwwwwn. Can we move on already? If we want funny we have Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert. If we want scandalous hypocrisy just play spin the bottle with any group of republican congressmen. The only worthwhile consideration is are the voters going to respond?

Bravo!

Bravo!

You must understand, Bill,

You must understand, Bill, that Ipanema is in Brazil, not Argentina, and that the two countries have a very different vibe. Still, I think you're right about uptight traditional-values politicians and the foibles of the human heart. Somerset Maugham should have written the story.

"Erare humanum est..."

"Erare humanum est..."

Ah, the party of FAMILY

Ah, the party of FAMILY VALUES, as the resmugs have constantly reminded us for 8+ years. Let's hear it for hypocrisy.

To Greg Field: Please read

To Greg Field: Please read the transcript from the interview Sanford did with FOX NEWS just 3 weeks ago concerning President Clinton and Monica Lewinsky: http://www.foxnews.com/politics/2009/06/24/transcript-excerpts-june-sanford-interview-recalling-president-clintons/ He was NOT ready to "move on already" about it. In fact, he said, "people were incensed. I mean, I think that there were enough sordid details to get people genuinely ticked off" and "So, people were I think genuinely offended -- from either an ethical or moral -- standard on what had gone on." The news isn't the deed. The news is the hypocrisy. People like him need to be outed, so the rest of us can live in peace. If you don't think this is an important issue, think about how much time and money were devoted to dwelling on President Clinton's indiscretions. Think about the fact that John Edwards will never be able to run for President now. Think about what would be done to President Obama if he were found to be just as imperfect. This article isn't just being funny. It's making a point about hypocrisy and about how the energy of God's Own Party is spent. It's an important point that effects every other issue from our many current wars (another example of hypocrisy and another subject for religious pontification), and about the hypocricy of our healthcare debate, not to mention the hypocricy of our country standing for human rights while committing torture and other attrocities that are celebrated by right-wing Republicans.

I was under the impression

I was under the impression that Sanford and his wife have been separated for a while. Is this not true?

Sex may be an equal

Sex may be an equal opportunity sport, but you have to admit it's so much more fun when one of the "do as I say - not as I do" crowd is caught with their pants around the ankles.

When will we learn that

When will we learn that those who shout loudest against morally-questionable behavior are always those who are doing the very thing they villify? The drug-crazed lunatic Rush Limbaugh railing against drug abuse leaps to mind as an example. Now Mark Sanford joins the immortals in this pantheon, right next to Larry Craig, Jimmy Swaggart and "Duke" Cunningham. M0ral midgets, all.

During his press conference

During his press conference Mr. Sanford made the impression of being an adolescent asking his wife and his constituency for permission to go and live with his mistress.

He was driven to excess

He was driven to excess merely by the accusation of Steve Colbert that he was a boring guy. He just tried to overcome or enhance this reputation with an exotic "boree."

Geeze, I would still be

Geeze, I would still be married if I could write love notes like our Governor. But, then again, I seldom tell lies and didn't cheat on my ex, so I guess our situations ARE different. And I have never stood up at a podium and condemned other people for "acts against oaths" like he and so many other Repubs have done. But I don't have to be a hypocrite since I am not a Christian Leader of the Right, who knows one thing and chooses to say another. This kind of behavior has been consistent, historically, and we can certainly expect it to continue as well as be forgiven. Mark and Newt for President!!!! We need HONORABLE men like them leading this country, Right?

I feel sorry for his

I feel sorry for his children and his wife. He should do the right thing now, just as he advised Pres. Clinton. Quit or be just another GOP'er hypocrite.

It just goes to show you. If

It just goes to show you. If a Bible-thumping governor (or their child) ever looks your way, you really need to run. Run as fast and as far as you can. Don't stop to wonder what they want. Don't stop to chat. And, for God's sake, don't stop to flirt! All that can come of it is to see your tacky life shredded apart in full view of the tabloids. That poor woman. First, the nut-case boyfriend spends five days in her apartment in self-obsessed sobbing. (There's one week to forget!) Then, every tabloid reporter in the world is camped out on her doorstep. Oh, those wacky outsourcing hypocritical life-wrecking abstinence-only Republicans! (I need to go pray now.)

As Sade sang...no need to

As Sade sang...no need to ask, he's a SHREWD OPERATOR...SHREWD OPERATOR.....

So the guv was spot at the

So the guv was spot at the Atlanta airport? Well, at least this story, hilarious as it is, doesn't lead to a men's room ala Larry Craig.. The SC guv needs take his rightful place beside Craig, Limbaugh and the remaining GOP hypocrites. Someone else said it best: moral (not to mention mental) midgets!

You made my day Pitt! I

You made my day Pitt! I found it hard to laugh when my deceased ex husband had an affair with our spanish baby sitter. I went on to a marvelous marriage but it was sad for our daughter, this is sad for the voters. I feel for those four boys

I don't get all of the

I don't get all of the Republican bashing on this issue. I'm assuming it's coming from Democrats. But what about Clinton, Edwards, the Kennedys, Hart, etc, etc. Come on folks, let's be equal opportunity finger pointers.

You all have obviously

You all have obviously mistaken Sanford for someone who gives a s**t about your moral outrage and opprobrium. He doesn't even have the common decency to resign his position after totally abdicating his responsibilities as the Governor of the State of South Carolina, for 5 days without even informing the Lieutenant Governor that he would be gone, or where he was going. With his presidential aspirations what they are, should he ever, by some horrible national misfortune be elected President, can you imagine the firestorm that would follow if he did the same thing then? He has forfeited any legitimacy he might ever have had as a presidential candidate, and should resign his office immediately. An "apology" is not enough.

To Paulpat: This IS the

To Paulpat: This IS the other side of the coin. For years we've been hearing the constant harping on about PRESIDENT (get over it) Clinton, and PRESIDENT (get over it) Kennedy, etc. The harping on has come from the sanctimonious right. NOW IT'S OUR TURN. It seems that the right not only has the EXCLUSIVE "right" to claim moral superiority, but also the EXCLUSIVE right to claim its privacy has been breeched every time someone calls them out about their sanctimonious hypocrisy. Not only that, but lately, it seems that the most sanctimonious spokesmen of the right have been running up the score in instances of getting caught with their pants down. It seems that the more self-righteous they are, the more prone to this kind of thing they are. I don't remember PRESIDENT (get over it) Clinton harping on about being holier-than-thou, but I DO remember several member of "GOD'S OWN PARTY" trying to remove him from office for committing a sin that they themselves were guilty of. SANFORD WAS ONE OF THE LOUDEST MEMBERS OF THE BUNCH. So, for the ninth time, this isn't about finger pointing to adulterers. This is about calling out hypocrits. After the hypocrits come down from their high horse, the finger pointing will stop.

why is it that the dems get

why is it that the dems get impeached, or are forced to resign, but the cons get standing ovations in the senate?

No, Mr. Pitt is wrong. There

No, Mr. Pitt is wrong. There is nothing funny about the Sanford situation. While not tragic (no one died), it is gut- (if not heart-) wrenching. (I'm a card-carryin' librul Dem, BTW.) First, we have a governor who tried his damndest to refuse the stimulus $$ which our S.C. schools sorely need. Then he throws his professional duties to the wind and heads off, without notice to staff, Lt. Gov., or anyone else, to Argentina to be with a woman he apparently has fallen heads over heels in love with. If he gets "what's coming," he'll be impeached and removed from office for his PROFESSIONAL dereliction of duty--then our state will face 18 months of Andre Bauer in office, an outcome that chills me to the bone on this hot June night. Sanford's personal story is his own and is for him and his family to settle. Clearly he was in pain at the news conference, and it was a sickening event to watch. But leave that alone. Let the personal remain personal. He is an effectual governor at best -- but if he resigns or is removed, we'll have in the governor's mansion a man who regularly abuses what authority he thinks he has, who flouts the law, or shamelessly pimps himself out to all & sundry. Ugh.

How could you have left out

How could you have left out the straying of Republican Dan Burton, congressman from Indiana, description of whose sexual escapades can still be found described in full color so-to-speak on Google (Salon).

The dems get impeached, or

The dems get impeached, or are forced to resign, but the cons get standing ovations in the senate, because the latter promote family values.

Whoops! My error! Instead

Whoops! My error! Instead of writing "He is an effectual governor at best," I meant to write "INeffectual governor at best." But I guess that went without saying.

Nemesis by Micha F.

Nemesis by Micha F. Lindemans In Greek mythology, Nemesis is the goddess of divine justice and vengeance. Her anger is directed toward human transgression of the natural, right order of things and of the arrogance causing it. Nemesis pursues the insolent and the wicked with inflexible vengeance. The "Girl from Ipanema," Sandford's Maria, and many many others who we do not know nor are aware of are the Avatar's Nemesis (Women of color), The avatar of Nemesis takes various forms and works in mysterious ways, dealing with the insolent (White male power structure)! Read Chalmers Johnson's NEMESIS: The last days of the American Republic, he lays it out quite well. Here's to all those lovely and remarkable Avatar's of Nemesis! Venceremos!

If they made extra marital

If they made extra marital sex acceptable, or at least not so ignominious, we could save a lot of ink in these troubled times. I mean who, really, gives a damn? Except Mrs Sandford.

First off, those Republicans

First off, those Republicans on the front pages, yelling the most about moral values are not true Christians (That also applies to those wearing suits of Dems but are Republicans inside). Secondly,it is clear Sanford is not a true Christian or Evangelical either--Well, he could be for they are Far Right, war hungry and hypocritical freaks. What is clear however, his wife knew about his past lovers (As did Hillary with Bill); Sanford's wife was apparently the woman behind the man and pushed him into politics (Hillary riding Bill's coattails into the WH and beyond); Sanford was not happy in his marriage and for a very long time so he played around(Looking for whatever he was not getting with his wife) as Bill C. has done with Hillary C. We only know what we are fed by the MSM but it seems he has not been happy for years. It seems she is the driving force and wanted the WH more then he did as he did things guaranteed to get himself caught and brought down. Self mutilation, self crucifixion by these "Christians" is well known. I love it when these foolish "men" are caught and beg for understanding and forgiveness for they show themselves for who they really are. Actually, they both have but she is being portrayed as the scorned, loving wife and she is not. She's not going to the WH and he is stuck in a loveless marriage.

... not at he ... WRP

... not at he ... WRP ruined the best line of the song. " she looks straight ahead, not at HE' I was just listening to the Antonio Carlos Jobim version this afternoon, comparing it to the Jobim&Getz version. It's 'he', not'me' in both, and sung by a beautiful women's voice " ...she looks straight ahead, not at he"

So, the American Puritan

So, the American Puritan Christian Fundamentalist, prayer going, holier than thou (and cows), stone throwing at 666 glasses houses, card carrying all American boy seems to have had sex with other women - good all American Christian fundamentalists like himself just 'sex' he said; but alas, all that he claims he was, or felt obligated to be (pandering to his bible preaching SC citizenry - also like himself), fell for the siren: a passionate, intelligent, worldly, Latina!! See, Mr Gov: there is life outside the rigid corner you put yourself in, or felt compelled to stay in. May this serve as a learning curve for all the others like you. And remember, you owe former President Clinton an apology. He is dumb, dumb, but was still right there next to the red phone should the nation need him! You completely left responsibility to your voters and stoled their money! I think this mean jail time, right! Again, only in the land of people who still believe they are as pure as the driven snow.

There are so many stories

There are so many stories about America now days that make me feel a little queasy. Kinda like Israel America, what part of hypocrisy don't you understand. Americans ??? how much longer can you keep you heads in the sand before the walls come a tumblen down.
