Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin announced Friday that she was resigning her office later this month, a stunning decision that could free her to run for president more easily but also raises questions about her political standing at home.

Palin disclosed the surprise news Friday afternoon from her home in Wasilla with her husband, Todd, and Lt. Governor Sean Parnell, who the governor said would take over the state on Saturday, July 25th.

By not running for re-election, Palin liberates herself from the political constraints that come with running for president while still in elected office.

Leaving office at the end of the month, the former vice presidential hopeful will be able to travel the country more freely without facing the sort of repeated ethics inquiries she's been fending off since returning to Alaska earlier this year.

In making her announcement, Palin spoke directly to those inquiries, saying she wouldn't stand by as taxpayer money was spent to investigate her.

Speaking outside of her home with Lake Lucille in the background, Palin derided the 'superficial political bloodsport" that has been aimed at her since rocketing into fame last summer.

And, in remarks that appeared to be off the cuff, Palin also recalled her days as a high school basketball point guard, arguing that she was advancing her state by stepping down.

'I know when it's time to pass the ball for victory," Palin said.

But Palin also hinted at her own national ambitions, invoking a quote that she credited to Gen. Douglas MacArthur: 'We are not retreating, we are advancing in another direction."

Palin has been dogged by a series of ethical complaints, many of which her allies consider as frivolous, and has had to set up a legal defense fund to pay her bills.

Just this week, the Anchorage Daily News reported that these complaints against her administration had reached almost $300,000, much of that sum owing to the so-called 'Troopergate" probe of Palin.

Beyond ethical questions, Palin has continued to face other difficulties since her return to Alaska.

Legislators of both parties have complained about some of her time away from the state capitol and Palin has had to grapple with a series of tabloid-type stories relating to her family.

But Palin retains a strong following among many conservatives who were electrified when she was tapped to serve on the GOP ticket by Sen. John McCain last year. She drew thousands of people to a small-town festival in upstate New York last month, some of whom drove a considerable distance just to catch a glimpse of Palin.

Palin allies contend that her star power will still benefit her home state.

'This was a positive forward looking decision for her state, her family and cares so much for Alaska that she is going to get outside of the bubble and work to its benefit outside," said Jason Recher, who worked for Palin on last year's campaign.

But the decision to suddenly quit her post will also reinforce some of the very questions about Palin that were raised in the lengthy Vanity Fair story this week - whether she's overly erratic and prone to ignore her own political advisers.

Two of own GOP allies were told this week that Palin would announce that she was definitely not running for re-election, but the move to outright leave office has caught many of her supporters by surprise.

Democrats, delighted at yet another opportunity to hammer prominent Republican office-holders, accused Palin of quitting on her state.

'Either Sarah Palin is leaving the people of Alaska high and dry to pursue her long shot national political ambitions or she simply can't handle the job now that her popularity has dimmed and oil revenues are down," said the DNC's Brad Woodhouse. 'Either way - her decision to abandon her post and the people of Alaska who elected her continues a pattern of bizarre behavior that more than anything else may explain the decision she made today."

Palin's office announced Friday morning that she would make an 'announcement' at her home in the afternoon but said nothing more until the governor stood alongside Parnell and much of her cabinet.

Normally I would satirize

Normally I would satirize the reckless dolt, but I just can't waste any time on even the shortest ''channeled" dialogue (or should that read ''Chanel-ed''?). If anybody in Alaska or anywhere is even the slightest bit inspired by the incongruous non-sequiturs Palin spluttered today, I will be flabbergasted. Well perhaps not so flabergasted since the indolence of the American electorate is legendary. Since Barnum's days a pickle and a five cent beer equals a vote.

OK, I'll bite. Women can be

OK, I'll bite. Women can be as evil as men. Period. Maybe even more. I pegged this woman as a sheep in wool's clothing the day she was shown off too the public. Watch to see if this person is invited to a Bilderberg Group meeting within the next two to three years. This will spell much out for those whom follow politics. No western leader as of late has been elected without this blessing. Too much for the mind, then sleep some more.

Anyone who thinks she is

Anyone who thinks she is presidential material should watch this rambling train-wreck of an announcement. The poor woman can't even handle a 6-minute announcement about herself. How should anyone expect her to handle complex policy issues?

Yes, and after elected

Yes, and after elected President she'll step down before her first term is up and run for Empress of the Universe! Oi.

I wonder who is more

I wonder who is more comical, the Monty Python Palin or our Sarah trying to hoodwink the nation again as did Mr. Bush.

Wow. Way to show commitment

Wow. Way to show commitment to one's constituents. Why do I think she knows some worse revelation is lurking and she's hoping to avoid it being found out?

I would advise Palin to keep

I would advise Palin to keep that office as long as she could because her political days will be limited only to pin-up calendars in the GOP offices in DC. Any aspirations to hold even the lowest political office in the land would be in vain. The GOP has bigger problems than to have the added weight of what to do with a never-was has-been.

I think the reason she is

I think the reason she is leaving is clear. As she said: "she wouldn't stand by as taxpayer money was spent to investigate her." To me this says she is concerned about the investigation into ethics. Although, the reason given is a nice spin, I think she fears that it is getting to close to the truth.

Other than a great set of

Other than a great set of cheek bones, what does this lady have to offer government? Seeing her leave the national scene is a blessing if for real! Does anyone in the Republican party believe the American people can be fooled again by an empty head? Apparently so or is it just the media trying to hold on to great headlines by suggesting she has aspirations for higher office?

So, she's stepping down as

So, she's stepping down as governor because she's done such a lousy job & created so much controversy with her unethical behavior & that makes her a better GOP presidential candidate? Interesting. Maybe she & Bush will get together to talk strategy. Given corporate control of much of the media & how easily manipulated by that same media/corporate interests as so many people seem to be, the GOP choosing someone as ignorant & unable to deal effectively with other people as she is, doesn't seem that stupid an idea. All they have to do is figure out how to "market" her.

Is the quitter going off to

Is the quitter going off to hike the Appalachians?

"I promised efficiencies and

"I promised efficiencies and effectiveness! ? That's not how I am wired. I am not wired to operate under the same old "politics as usual." I promised that four years ago - and I meant it." Palin was, and probably always will be, "wired" to dissemble and deceive in the pursuit of power for herself. And, she seems always to be willing to take on the role of being the ugly, partisan attack dog - as she did in the McLame campaign. And, of course, to blaming the press for all her troubles is also part of Palin's "wiring". That she even has the chutzpah to stand up and claim that she has ANY interest above her own is beyond me. One of her few talents is ruthless ambition. Based on the facts, she has a long record of lies and dishonesy; she lied about the "bridge to nowhere" (she was before it before she was against it), she lied about opposing earmarks (she actively lobbied for them and succeeded in making Alaska the largest recipient per capita of federal money of any other state even while they handed out money from the oil and gas fund to the tune of $3200/per INDIVIDUAL in the state last year), she charged the state for travel expenses for her children while doing state business, she charged per diem for working at home on holidays, and she violated state law to fire the head of state police for resisting the firing of her ex-brother-in-law. Buybye to the least articulate and arguably one of the most dishonest politicians in America.

What struck me as funny was

What struck me as funny was that at 9:55 into her speech she talked about the quitter's way out being going with the flow, keeping your head down... then SHE QUIT. She seems to contradict herself.

well, well, well,,,, I

well, well, well,,,, I suspect this is only the beginning of what will be somewhat sad, somewhat funny and very interesting...... good by Sarah

When Richard Nixon lost the

When Richard Nixon lost the gubernatorial race in California in 1962, he told the press "Well, you won't have Dick Nixon to kick around any more!" Words to live by...

I wish her all the success.

I wish her all the success. The GOP needs another trip to the wood shed. These people are too dumb to know they are the minority, still think they run things. Well, at least she is running! Like a wolf under a helicopter.

At least she makes one

At least she makes one laugh. Makes our Arnie look pretty darned responsible :) Ain't life grand?

She was always bettter in

She was always bettter in the spot light as fluff. She will go on the road with her book.....get the national attention she is seeking without having to comment on the serious issues of state. She can also be the victim..she was driven out of office by the "intellectual -liberal establishment media." It's actually a brilliant move on the part of her handers. They will have her memorize sound bites on health care, the middle east, the economy, etc. to throw out when she is on her book tour. Her book advance will provide her with the wardrobe, make-up and hair styles that will surpass her makeover stint with McCain. "How you gonna keep um down on the tundra when they've seen L.A., NYC, D.C., Chicago, San Francisco....and so on and so on.

Maybe Sarah Palin will

Maybe Sarah Palin will become the Ralph Nader of the Republican Party. Some major differences being, though, Ralph is so corruption-free, and renowned for his competence, high intelligence, chastity, and dorkiness. But seriously -- this one is resigning and the other one is not? When he could be leaving the Washington cesspool for a lover in Argentina?

Maybe she's quitting so that

Maybe she's quitting so that she can spend more time nurturing her baby. Otherwise, I don't get what she means about serving her state better. I love my state, so if I already held the highest office in it I just don't see how by not being governor of it would put me in a better position to help it!

Please let her run - and be

Please let her run - and be nominated by her party - she will secure democratic domination of the White House for the next 20 years

Normally I would criticize

Normally I would criticize her resignation but in this case I think it could be a good thing for what is left of your nation. I believe she would have served honorably and honestly as Vice-President but the concept of at least two more wars on foreign soil started by McCain made his election impossible and therefore her opportunity was denied. GO SARAH GO!. I'm not sure the Presidency is with=in reach but it's worth a try.

Don't be so quick to dismiss

Don't be so quick to dismiss her. If primaries were held today she'd probably get the nomination. Part of me hopes that she does, but then that's what I though when Bush got the nomination.

Fantastic. If Governor

Fantastic. If Governor Palin has prove done thing, it is the adage "give her enough rope and she'll hang herself." By leaving the governor's office she's freeing herself of the responsibilities and limitations of that office. As of July 26 she'll be a free bird . . . lots of rope . . . this is going to be entertaining, so stay tuned; and on behalf of the DNC, thank you Governor Palin for all you're about to do in the name of conservative Republicanism.

I see no reason for the

I see no reason for the investigations to stop just because the perpetrator has left the building. Given her likely next "job", it's a reason for them to be intensified.

Perhaps Mark Sanford would

Perhaps Mark Sanford would be willing to take a lesson from this sexy schoolteacher...by resigning as Governor amid scandal.

Look, it's simple. She just

Look, it's simple. She just needed time out to brush up on her debating skills for her next presidential run (in a long line of future attempts). She'll need to focus more of her energy on things like saying "shucks" and "by-golly", without sounding like a psychopath who thinks it's her personal mission to bring about the apocalypse so she can be raptured. She'll need to really concentrate all of her energy on making her incessant winking habit look more natural and folksy, rather than just another fakey affectation of a PSYCHOPATH WHO THINKS IT'S HER PERSONAL MISSION TO BRING ABOUT THE APOCALYPSE SO SHE CAN BE RAPTURED.

My bet is that she's

My bet is that she's stepping down as Gubernator to free up her time to form her new Skinhead party in time for '12.

In those immortal words of

In those immortal words of W. C. Fields regarding Baby Leroy sleeping on the set, "The kid's no trooper."

Has any reporter discovered

Has any reporter discovered she has been flying to Argentina? Or South Carolina?

Doesn't everyone make wise

Doesn't everyone make wise life-changing career changes based upon the opinions of their non-adult children? Mommy stays home to raise the brood? - betcha NOT! They're already under the bus.

As fact-challenged as Ronald

As fact-challenged as Ronald Reagan. Oliver P Smith, not MacArthur.

ah - Sarah cannot be a wolf

ah - Sarah cannot be a wolf in sheep's clothing or they would hunt her from the air. She may have unrequited visions of grandeur. Maybe she has been offered a lucrative job as a lobbyist

"If primaries were held

"If primaries were held today she'd probably get the nomination." That comment is probably correct. Unfortunately that tells us that the Right Wing Radicals who have so badly damaged the Republican Party and our country are eager to do it again. From the viewpoint of many truly conservative Republicans that is a true tragedy. For the benefit of the nation, which truly needs a working two party system to represent the interests of We the People I, for one, hope the real Republicans have the courage to take back their party. The prospects however do not look good.

O.k., folks. Here's the real

O.k., folks. Here's the real reason Sarah Palin announced her resignation: she needed more time with her boyfriend in Argentina.

he he he . . . good stuff.

he he he . . . good stuff. The "base" (all 15% of the electorate) is energized. Good for them. Let them secede to Alaska . . . good riddance

An earlier post quoted her

An earlier post quoted her as saying "...I am wired" Look at the unnaturally tight face muscles and her eyes. What is wrong with this machine? As you enter the final year of your elected term , it is an accepted custom to just flat out quit the job you fought tooth and nail for. Not even among the Eskimos is this true. Good Bye.

Let's not forget that John

Let's not forget that John McCain is an old man and has three and a half years to go before the end of what would have been his first term. We might have had President Palin at some point during what is, mercifully, Obama's first term. Don't discount the importance of running mates. Look who we've had lately: Sarah Palin, Dick Cheney, Joe Lieberman, Dan Quayle, John Edwards. Selecting Palin was McCain's certain doom.

Joan M., she also has nice

Joan M., she also has nice legs.

disaster averted... whew

While it upsets me that I

While it upsets me that I keep reading about her, I can't look away. It's like a train wreck... I know I shouldn't stare, but... At least this makes the news entertaining again. And maybe SNL will revive her?

While watching Bill Maher,

While watching Bill Maher, one of the panelist said,"If my Grandmother had balls, she would've been my Grandfather!" The American way is never quite what it seems to be...Good-Buy Sarah, what's your new job gonna be (wink)?

She quoted McArthur and said

She quoted McArthur and said shed be working on the peoples revolution... how is that a good thing?

Lordie,Lordie,

Lordie,Lordie, Lordie?!?!?!?! MAKE SARAH GO AWAY, PLEASE. Her resignation speech is reason enough not to ever consider her for a job even as a dogcatcher in any state. She is the most unqualified political figure seeking high office ever in my recollection. (Dan Quayle was maybe another. Those Republicans sure know how to pick em'. )

''''I CAN SEE RESIGNATION

''''I CAN SEE RESIGNATION FROM MY HOUSE..!!'''' LOL..!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!....

Well, this gives us SOME

Well, this gives us SOME relief from the Michael-Jackson-all-the-time mania! Now it may be Sara-Palin-for-a-sec, until she goes on her speaking tour, writes (can she put two ideas together in a coherent string without some ghost writer?) and tries to make lots of money off of silly and gullible fans. Sadly, fools like Palin (and George Bush) will be paid exhorbitant sums to get on stage and/or autograph their self-glorifying reconstructionist histories. Well, pity the poor fools who do the paying!

IT is interesting to watch

IT is interesting to watch the disarray of the Republican party. Does Sarah Palin really think she can take over the leadership of the party? Gingrich is trying the same move. These are two really disgusting politicians. The interesting point is who is backing them. Gingrich probably has no backing in the party, other than the right wing AM radio blowhards. Palin still may be the mainquin of Bill Kristol and the neo-cons. It is going to be interesting.

Sarah Palin is the

Sarah Palin is the Republican's Nancy Pelosi. Two scary chicks if you ask me! On the other hand, we could get lucky and actually have the end of days.

The Palin Hour coming soon

The Palin Hour coming soon to a radio near you, joining the likes of Oliver North, G.G. Liddy and many other GOP criminals...

Let's hope That ActionLine's

Let's hope That ActionLine's report on the reign of terror Palin has created for Alaska's wildlife will now end. She has supported the slaughter of 2,000 wolves every year, and rid whole areas of bears. "Her latest appointee advocates killing wolves from the air in Denali State Park. " She reportedly has sued the federal government over supporting the killing of polar bears and the Cook Inlet beluga whales. She done a (whale) of a job turning Alaska's ecosystem upside down. Shalom

I'm thinking that The

I'm thinking that The Republicans like Palin and Limbaugh and Hannity are the one's who transform GOP from an acronym into a word... A Bunch of GOPs one and all...

Teddy Roosevelt's maxim was

Teddy Roosevelt's maxim was "Speak softly and carry a big stick." Sarah Palin's maxim has emerged as "Prevaricate, exaggerate, overstate, deprecate, denigrate and abandon your state."

Slaughter of 2,000 wolves?

Slaughter of 2,000 wolves? And killing them in Denali State Park? Killing of polar bears and beluga whales? She'll burn in HELL for this!

Sara Palin resigned to a

Sara Palin resigned to a "higher calling"? Whaddaya wanna bet she becomes a televangelist??

I know only one family that

I know only one family that voted, not for McCain but, for Palin. They want a theocracy. Oh, and they were Tammy Faye Baker PTL missionaries who murdered the best of their family because he was gay. As I understand their holy book, it is as much an abomination to wear blended fabrics as to be gay. And they want to force us, a la inquisition, to live by their rules.

You betcha!

You betcha!

The latest news in Alaska is

Resigning under

Resigning under investigation... kind of like Nixon? He left office and impeachment stoppe, she's maybe hoping the same? Why don't we hold Politicians' responsible AFTER they leave office?
