    Remarks of President Barack Obama
    Weekly Address
    The White House
    Saturday 04 July 2009

Hello and Happy Fourth of July, everybody. This weekend is a time to get together with family and friends, kick back, and enjoy a little time off. And I hope that's exactly what all of you do. But I also want to take a moment today to reflect on what I believe is the meaning of this distinctly American holiday.

Today, we are called to remember not only the day our country was born - we are also called to remember the indomitable spirit of the first American citizens who made that day possible.

We are called to remember how unlikely it was that our American experiment would succeed at all; that a small band of patriots would declare independence from a powerful empire; and that they would form, in the new world, what the old world had never known - a government of, by, and for the people.

That unyielding spirit is what defines us as Americans. It is what led generations of pioneers to blaze a westward trail.

It is what led my grandparents' generation to persevere in the face of a Depression and triumph in the face of tyranny.

It is what led generations of American workers to build an industrial economy unrivalled around the world.

It is what has always led us, as a people, not to wilt or cower at a difficult moment, but to face down any trial and rise to any challenge, understanding that each of us has a hand in writing America's destiny.

That is the spirit we are called to show once more. We are facing an array of challenges on a scale unseen in our time. We are waging two wars. We are battling a deep recession. And our economy - and our nation itself - are endangered by festering problems we have kicked down the road for far too long: spiraling health care costs; inadequate schools; and a dependence on foreign oil.

Meeting these extraordinary challenges will require an extraordinary effort on the part of every American. And that is an effort we cannot defer any longer.

Now is the time to lay a new foundation for growth and prosperity. Now is the time to revamp our education system, demand more from teachers, parents, and students alike, and build schools that prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world.

Now is the time to reform an unsustainable health care system that is imposing crushing costs on families, businesses, large and small, and state and federal budgets. We need to protect what works, fix what's broken, and bring down costs for all Americans. No more talk. No more delay. Health care reform must happen this year.

And now is the time to meet our energy challenge - one of the greatest challenges we have ever confronted as a people or as a planet. For the sake of our economy and our children, we must build on the historic bill passed by the House of Representatives, and make clean energy the profitable kind of energy so that we can end our dependence on foreign oil and reclaim America's future.

These are some of the challenges that our generation has been called to meet. And yet, there are those who would have us try what has already failed; who would defend the status quo. They argue that our health care system is fine the way it is and that a clean energy economy can wait. They say we are trying to do too much, that we are moving too quickly, and that we all ought to just take a deep breath and scale back our goals.

These naysayers have short memories. They forget that we, as a people, did not get here by standing pat in a time of change. We did not get here by doing what was easy. That is not how a cluster of 13 colonies became the United States of America.

We are not a people who fear the future. We are a people who make it. And on this July 4th, we need to summon that spirit once more. We need to summon the same spirit that inhabited Independence Hall two hundred and thirty-three years ago today.

That is how this generation of Americans will make its mark on history. That is how we will make the most of this extraordinary moment. And that is how we will write the next chapter in the great American story.

Thank you, and Happy Fourth of July.

How can we as a nation move

How can we as a nation move on if we refuse to examine our recent past. The crimes of the Bush Administration against our Constitution and Federal Anti-Torture Laws must be examined and the violators prosecuted. If we fail to do this and soon we will be condemned to eventually repeat this dark chapter in American history and more US Soldiers will die for nothing in future unnecessary wars. Unless President Obama prosecutes the members of the Bush Administration that conspired to torture, he is covering up the Bush crimes of torture and the WMD Lies. SIGN THE PETITION Calling For Prosecution at ANGRYVOTERS.ORG

Amen, Mr. President.

Amen, Mr. President.

Sir, I believe that you are

Sir, I believe that you are right on many counts, however, the previous adminestration must be investigated and held responsible for all of their National and International crimes. Also, America is almost broken, not to broke to fix though. I must suggest that if the Military-Industrial Complex is if fact "in charge" They have their New World Order Military ( it is private contractors/mercenaries) Are you prepared to defend our country once again, when the Corporations advance their Army against America? Happy 4th of July, Mr. President.

"We are called to remember

"We are called to remember how unlikely it was that our American experiment would succeed at all; that a small band of patriots would declare independence from a powerful empire; and that they would form, in the new world, what the old world had never known - a government of, by, and for the people." Well they gave it a shot, but the idea was subverted by a wealthy elite who gradually took control of the government and turned it into -- a powerful empire. We have the trappings of democracy; a veneer of elections and freedoms of speech and assembly. But the reality below the surface is a vicious and murderous empire run by thugs and criminals for their own benefit. It would be fitting if another "small band of patriots" could upset the entrenched elites. I'll drink to that!

I noticed that Energy

I noticed that Energy Secretary Chu told Western Governors recently that nuclear power is a key component of the renewable energy solution policies of this administration. There are good reasons why we have not built a new plant since Jimmy Carter wisely called a moratorium in the 70s. Nuclear does not belong in our energy future. Wind, solar, and hydroelectric should be at the center of new policies in this area. In every other policy arena, the Obama administration is working to create a better America for future generations; similarly, we should not be leaving a legacy of radioactive waste and seepage into ground water for our children's children. Instead of going after Bush and Cheney, who are now irrelevant--Thank God--let's stop the new effort at momentum in dangerous nuclear power.

A Very Happy 4th July, Mr

A Very Happy 4th July, Mr President and all America. Let us all rejoice that someone like Obama is in the White House, however difficult it may prove for him to do everything he would wish to do. I wish we in GB had such an inspiring leader.

A fine speech, as I've come

A fine speech, as I've come to expect- and appreciate - from President Obama. At least, for the most part. I have only one bone to pick. Since childhood, I was taught that one of the main - if not THE main - purpose of public education - is to prepare this nation's children to be active participants in a democracy. To know what democracy is, what their rights and responsibilities are as citizens, members of a community. So why is it that the conversation around the quality of our schools speaks exclusively about their obligation to "prepare every child in America to outcompete any worker in the world"? In my humble opinion, a far greater danger to our nation than our standing among workers around the world, is the way our people take for granted their democratic government, opt out of participating, seem unwilling to stand up and shout when they see corruption, stupidity and partisanship destroying our chance to face and resolve the challenges before us. I fear, dear leader, that pumping billions of dollars into charter schools, will not fix THAT problem.

Going forward while at the

Going forward while at the same time sweeping dirt under the rug is not going to work, Mr.President. The truth about 911, the unjustified wars that you are still continuing, the torture scandals, the 'assisted' coups of other countries, talking about Democracy for others while taking rights away from Americans , the hypocrisy of our government officials, the propping up of the wealthy at the expense of the truly needy, etc., etc. Need I go on ? Root out the waste in our government instead of forcing the rest of us to Bear The Burden of unnecessary and wasteful spending. Bring our Military home and stop trying to Rule the Planet. Instead of wasting Trillions on more and more ways to kill and destroy, use it bettering life here in this country and around the world. It sure does appear that Common Sense is not common, anymore. We voted for 'Change' and we only got even more of the same. Talk is cheap, Sir, but it has never healed a sick child or raised the standard of living for a single person. You say to give you time..that it took many years to get in the mess we are now in. You are right, but how long does it take to bring Criminals to justice or punish those that have caused the mess to start with ? Justice delayed is Justice denied. Distractions will never work, Mr. President, and will not earn you a free pass.

Thank you, Mr. PRESIDENT

Thank you, Mr. PRESIDENT Obama! I say that with pride and joy! Let's not fool ourselves...we will never be rid of Bush/Cheney and their Crime Syndicate. What they did to this great country will never be forgotten, nor should it, lest we make the same mistake(s) again! To all the naysayers and anti-Obama people: Shut up, get to work for your country in any way you can, and be darned thankful it isn't worse. If and when it DOES get worse...WORK HARDER !!! Don't give up until we turn this 2000-2008 mess around! No matter how long it takes. Now git!!! Dakotahgeo

I don't agree with our

I don't agree with our president; does that make me a naysayer? Does that make me "unpatriotic"? "Unamerican"? What's the big rush Mr. Obama? I think we have time to disagree, disagree and resolve our disagreements in a civil fashion. Any action taken out of the anxiety of hurry is only going to create more problems. I say let's hurry up and SLOW DOWN, get real people involved, lest the "corpgov" has its way with us for another five or ten generations.

Mr. President - thank you

Mr. President - thank you for your thought inspiring address to the nation. A lot of people in these united states forget our roots where 61 people from the 13 colonies signed the Declaration of Independence and started what we can say is the rest of the story. But, true, the story does not stop but goes on day after day. I am one of the thousands of people who were layed off because of this recession. Well, I still hold my head high and will do all I can do to help our nation get back on its own two feet solidly. Last but not least, I am a veteran of the Vietnam War. Please honor and respect our young men and women in harm's way today and all days. Without our soldiers and veterans we would not be here today. God bless you, Mr. President, and thank you for your service.

Mr. President, your words

Mr. President, your words were very scripted and lacked that special spark from the heart, very disappointing on one of the greatest AMERICAN holidays celebrated.

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! The

MISSION ACCOMPLISHED! The Bush/Chaney Administration was able to succeed where Osama bin Laden failed. Should the crimes of treason, by the Bush/Chaney Administration, be overlooked, then these crimes of high treason will be repeated in future administrations. The Allies conducted the Nürenberg Trials (in 1945 to 1949) for several reasons: A) To make aware that these crimes were actually committed, B) To examine HOW these crimes were able to be committed, C) Who committed these crimes and D) To punish the criminals. Should the guilty not be punished, then, their Criminal Acts would be absolved and could easily be repeated. There would not be any justice. “The true administration of justice is the firmest pillar of good government.” Should the Bush/Chaney Administration (alleged) criminals not be prosecuted, not be brought to trial and not found guilty, then, like the Ronald Reagan Republican group, they will be glorified, deified and praised. With ALL the evidence available: Eyewitnesses, Documents, Dead Bodies, Remnants of Death Camps, Newsreel clips, piles of clothes, piles of shoes, piles of hair, piles of eyeglasses, piles of gold teeth –COLD HARD EVIDENCE-, there are Holocaust Deniers being celebrated, glorified and believed. So, too, these (alleged) criminals will be praised and glorified for future generations. We will have not have learned from history –and the American society will repeat this debacle.

Some urge us to "scale back

Some urge us to "scale back our goals"? Ah, but Mr. Obama, you have already scaled back so many of your and our goals in your short 6 months in office. The corporate bail-out, the ongoing wars, torture, the recent sham of a clean energy bill, the lack of political power pushing for genuine health care reform, the refusal to stop mountain top removal. You are dispiriting us. It is not a glass half full or half empty, it is only a quarter of a glass, if that.

Perhaps you would prefer

Perhaps you would prefer rambling, broken, malaproppy, disorganized fratboy ramblings? Or, maybe a basketball or hockey analogy, to like, and I know so many Americans agree, and trying to be so not business as usual, the way a maverick can see how to reach the real America. Right?

While it is, indeed,

While it is, indeed, necessary to prosecute the criminals of the Bush administration, it is more urgent to try to provide our fellow citizens with food, shelter and health care. And maybe even have enough $$ left over to do the same for some of the starving peoples overseas, so that, in their impoverished desperation, they don't succumb to the attractions of befriending terrorist groups. Given the choice between food/shelter/health care/jobs, and the intangible of justice meted out to the Bush Crime Gang, the choice is clear where our priorities should be when we are faced with limited resources. Or, in the words of a poster on the office wall of one of my professors from graduate school: "It's difficult to think about draining the swamp when you're up to your ass in alligators."

Where is combating climate

Where is combating climate change in all this? Instead there's laying "a new foundation for growth and prosperity". Where is mention of the corporate bullying behind biotech, with its unpredictable and irreversible environmental effects? Sounds like business as usual, i.e. continuing to trash the planet. What future is this?

I AM grateful to have a 50th

I AM grateful to have a 50th state of the Union celebrating 50 years as a state, with the added distinction of a local boy Hawaii-born President Barack Obama. It is truly a cause for celebration that this young American President has the courage, will, knowledge, intelligence and wisdom to lead America and the world into peaceful, prosperous co-existence and interdependence on this beautiful yet troubled planet earth. We Are ONE

I believe that the criminals

I believe that the criminals of the Bush administration will ultimately face some form of public exposure, whether prosecution, disbarment, censure, perjury charges, etc., to the extent that it is possible to do so without creating such blowback from the Republicans as to freeze up legislative progress and what little compromise and cooperation from them is necessary. We ust have to be patient and let the necessary investigations proceed while Obama takes on the issues too critical to wait on
