US Gun Debate Fires Up as States Allow Weapons in Bars

Changes in gun legislation in Arizona and Tennessee comes despite bloody rampages in recent months.

New York - Up to 375,000 registered gun owners in Arizona and Tennessee were today given the right to carry concealed guns into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol, in the latest example of loosening gun laws in a country already renowned for its lax approach to firearms.

The change of the two states' gun laws marks a trend across the US towards increased rights for gun owners despite a spate of bloody rampages in recent months that have seen scores of Americans die. Advocates of the second amendment's right to bear arms argue that in the wake such shooting sprees, citizens should be able to defend themselves by carrying guns in public places.

But opponents say this is the logic of the mad house. Groups calling for greater regulation of gun ownership are opposing a move at the federal level to extend the right to carry concealed weapons to all 50 states.

Today, Tennessee granted its 250,000 citizens with gun licences the right to carry handguns into bars and restaurants that serve alcohol. Restaurant owners made a last-minute attempt to block the change, saying it was bad for business, but their appeal was rejected by the courts.

Randy Rayburn, one of the restaurant owner plaintiffs, told a local TV network: "I'm not worried about the 99% of gun owners who are permit holders. I'm worried about the 1 or 2% of would-be Dirty Harrys who are going to carry out their attempts at vigilante justice."

The governor of Arizona, Jan Brewer, signed a similar rule change yesterday allowing the 125,000 people in possession of a permit to carry concealed weapons to bring their guns into bars and restaurants.

At the federal level, a bill currently before the Senate would dramatically reduce gun controls at state level by extending the right of anyone with a local permit to carry a concealed weapon in public to do so anywhere in the 50 states. Opponents say that would diminish controls to the lowest common denominator.

"This is ridiculously stupid and a horrible idea. It's bad public policy though as we all know good public policy has little to do with America's gun laws," said Peter Hamm of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence.

The campaign points out that this year alone there have been three mass shootings carried out by men with licences to carry concealed guns. In February, Frank Garcia killed four people "execution-style" in upstate New York; in March, Michael McLendon killed 11 people before committing suicide in Alabama; and in April, Richard Poplawski ambushed four police officers in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, killing three.

The only area in which calls for greater rights for gun owners are being rebuffed at local level is the right to carry concealed weapons on university campuses.

In the wake of the Virginia Tech massacre in which 32 people were killed on the campus in April 2007, the National Rifle Association has tried in several states to pass laws allowing students to carry loaded guns into classrooms.

Such was the public revulsion over the massacre, however, that all attempts have so far failed.

Why aren't we freaked out by

Why aren't we freaked out by this craziness?! I swear there is a scheme to arm right-wing supporters in anticipation of a violent takeover of the government. We will have an army of Christian Fundamentalists and gun-toting, uneducated rednecks as the new Taliban, right here in the USA. Something's wrong when cigarettes are (rightly) banned in public areas as a hazard to one's health, yet concealed handguns are not.

A well regulated militia has

A well regulated militia has every right to have a drink after a hard evening of rigourous training.

Funny how people always want

Funny how people always want to take away somebody else's rights. Seems to me that the most productive way to stop violence and murder would be to put an end to the Obama wars. Those belong to him now. I'll remember how Democrats want to end violence next time I hear about Palestinian kids being killed with US made weapons. Democrat politicians love dead Palestinians but hey somebody might get shot in a bar. Phony liberals after my guns when the biggest purveyor of violence in the world today is the government they voted for. Stand on a pile of dead kids as tall as their politician's necks and whine that an innocent American might get shot. Not only that but hey OB where's my Habeas?

I am left of center on most

I am left of center on most debates. I am for the change in the law for Tennessee. The article whines of 3 sets of shootings in a period of 6 months by people who have been licensed to carry a firearm. The story says that in 2 states, there are 375,000 people with carry permits. I think the odds based only on the numbers here are much higher for me to be hurt by falling in my shower than being near a shooting by a carry permit holder. Based on a story carried here lately, I am more likely to be shot by a security guard than a conceal carry permit holder.

What ever happened to the

What ever happened to the days when family values were strong and guns were in every home? When a person committed a crime that person was highly looked down on by the public? What happened to the media that was not so liberal? When did guns become the killer and not the person who holds the gun? I have to say that owning a gun is not a bad thing nor is it a bad thing to become a concealed carrier of a firearm. I think our liberal media nothing but one sided and against family values. What do you expect when our kids are listening to songs that talk about killing cops. Reality shows that teach nothing of value except how to stab people in the back and not teaching the meaning of friendships. I think our family values have eroded over the years and has instilled ignorance, lack of discipline in our youth to know the difference between right and wrong, selfishness and materialism with out the consideration of others. How about that for some facts why people are killing each other on our streets. Its not the guns killing people. Its people being stupid that are killing people.

Personally, I like guns and

Personally, I like guns and would enjoy the opportunity to shoot it out in public against "bad guys" (that's actually how the police talk) protected by the law. Of course, who was the bad guy would only be determined way after the fact. The point is, guns are cool, sexy and fun, and shooting "bad" people seems so socially acceptable on TV. Go USA!
