But Here's the Funny Part

So the debate over health care reform has all but stalled out for the summer. Rep. Henry Waxman tried to keep the "public option" component of the package together, but wound up getting sold down the river by a bunch of Blue Cross Blue Shield Blue Dog Democrats who could give lessons to the GOP minority on how to thwart a presidential agenda. Obama's poll numbers took a pretty sizable hit in the last couple of weeks, at least according to Rasmussen, though there is a fairly compelling argument to be made that Rasmussen's numbers are only meaningful to Rasmussen. The president also wound up having a beer with a Harvard professor and a Cambridge cop to try to quell a story that has stepped all over the health care debate for the last week.

On balance, therefore, it would be difficult to argue that this was anything other than a rough week for Democrats in general and the White House in particular. Politics being what it is, one would expect the GOP to do their level best to make some hay out of these stumbles and miscues, and for sure they have tried. Once again, however, the Republican Party gave America a clinic on how to look foolish, deranged, out of touch and downright amusing.

For those in need of their daily recommended allowance of shrieking bat-poop insanity, look no further than the so-called "Birther" conspiracy currently roiling the ranks of the GOP. A holdover from the 2008 presidential campaign, the "Birther" controversy is centered around the far-Right argument that Obama was not born in America, has no birth certificate, is not an American citizen, and is not therefore a legitimate president. The actual birth certificate was produced ages ago, Hawaii proudly proclaimed itself the birthplace of the president, and the issue has been entirely settled in the minds of all but a few, who at their core simply cannot accept that a black man with an Arabic name sleeps in the White House.

The rank absurdity of the Birthers' contentions hasn't kept a whole array of high-ranking Republicans from jumping into the fray to endorse the validity of this farce. "Indeed," reported Talking Points Memo on Wednesday, "prominent Congressional Republicans were openly entertaining this stuff. A bill to require birth certificates from presidential candidates has picked up 11 total co-sponsors; Sen. Jim Inhofe (R-Oklahoma) declared that the Birthers 'have a point,' and that he doesn't discourage it. Even House GOP Vice Chair Cathy McMorris Rodgers (R-Washington), a member of the leadership, was saying she wanted to see the documents."

But here's the funny part. Fox News commentator Bill O'Reilly, right-wing bombthrower Ann Coulter and GOP Chairman Michael Steele - three people who have repeatedly set the standard for Deranged Things Actually Said In Public - have been working overtime to kill the Birther debate because they think it's stupid. They think it's stupid. Memo to the Far Right: when you've lost the support of people like O'Reilly, Coulter and Steele, you have to step back and wonder just how far from the pack you've strayed.

Elsewhere on the goofball spectrum, a couple of prominent right-wingers accused President Obama and the Democrats of being racists. Yes, they actually did. Fox News commentator Glenn Beck called Obama a racist for coming down on the side of Harvard Professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. during the recent flap over his arrest. Sen. John Cornyn (R-Texas) blasted Senate Democrats for - get this - using Sonya Sotomayor's race to divide the American people. Democrats, according to Cornyn, have been "giving cover to groups and individuals to nurture racial grievances for political advantage."

Yeah, let's move on. There are just no words.

Sen. George Voinovich (R-Ohio) went out on a limb the other day to argue that the GOP's political woes of late are largely the fault of the party's far-Right Southern core. Voinovich's accusation drew a stern rebuke from fellow Republican Sen. David Vitter (R-Louisiana), who said, "I'm on the side of conservatives getting back to core conservative values. There are a lot of us from the South who hold those values, which I think the party is supposed to be about. We strayed from them in the past few years, and that's why we performed so badly in the national elections." Not content to leave it at that, Vitter went on to label Voinovich a "wishy-washy" moderate.

But here's the funny part. Senator Vitter's heartfelt defense of core GOP values left out the part about how he is a known, publicly confirmed consorter with prostitutes, and admitted in 2007 to committing a "serious sin," the nature of which, one must assume, had nothing to do with failing to keep holy the Sabbath. The last word on this one belongs to Louisiana Democratic Party spokesman Kevin Franck, who replied to inquiries by Talking Points Memo with the following email message: "Last time I checked, you don't find core Southern values in the places David Vitter has been found. If David Vitter can lead his party back to their conservative values, maybe Larry Craig can give them tips on bathroom etiquette and Mark Sanford can recommend a really good restaurant in Buenos Aires."

    Ouch.

My understanding of the law

My understanding of the law is that only a natural born United States citizen can be president. That is considered settled law. The law may or may not make a lot of sense - but a natural born United States citizen is someone who was either born in the United States, OR someone who was born in another country to at least one parent who is a United States citizen. The humorous side of this whole stupid circus is that I understand that a fellow named John McCain happened to be born in Panama to parents who were United States citizens. I wish someone would check this out, and then make Lou Dobbs and the other "birthers" look like the clowns they actually are, for not checking the facts.

I'd be laughing if I wasn't

I'd be laughing if I wasn't so busy puking.

Interesting that you failed

Interesting that you failed to mention Rep. Weiner's amendment to replace the ghastly HR3200 with HR 676, expanded and enhanced Medicare for all. The committee did not vote on it only because Pelosi agreed to allow the amendment/single payer to have a full floor debate and vote. That means single payer healthcare reform is "ON THE TABLE."

It's amusing that the Obama

It's amusing that the Obama birth certificate protesters stem from the same party as the supporters of a constitutional amendment for the benefit of the current California governor to be able to run for President (at least when he was in his heyday). This alone tells me that their ONLY concern is grabbing power. Problem is, when they had the power, they were totally unconcerned about what the Constitution dictated. Divided we fall, my friends, and nothing divides a people better than quest for power.

The irony is that the first

The irony is that the first seven presidents weren't natural-born citizens. Bless.

John McCain was born on

John McCain was born on August 29, 1936 at Coco Solo Naval Air Station in the Panama Canal Zone, Panama, to naval officer John S. McCain, Jr. (1911–1981) and Roberta (Wright) McCain (b. 1912). At that time, the Panama Canal was under U.S. control. I think Military bases are considered "American soil", but your point is well taken. The "birthers" are idiots. And they rather rant than help America.

The Constitutional provision

The Constitutional provision accepts those who were citizens at the time of the adoption of the Constitution.I guess that would include the first Presidents. But it would also include Alexander Hamilton, who had something to do with the "natural born" provision. He was born in the British West Indies and some wished to exclude him. Can anyone shed light on the subject?

The Constitution includes a

The Constitution includes a clause that says anyone "who is a citizen at the time this constitution is adopted" is eligible to be President. This covers the first seven presidents. Article 2, section 1-d.

"...have been working

"...have been working overtime to kill the Birther debate because they think it's stupid." Dunno, my guess is that since they are not the originators, or missed the moment in driving that stake...they seem to deem it inconsequential...in other words, there is nothing in it for them. But maybe they are experiencing a salient moment of mental clarity, and do realize how dumb these accusations are. Nah...

John McCain is a white guy

John McCain is a white guy with a 'normal' sounding name. Barack Hussein Obama has dark skin and an 'exotic' name to American ears. These are the only reasons why Obama's legitimate eligibility to be president is questioned, while McCain's unestablished eligibility due to his Panamanian birth is not an issue.

"Memo to the Far Right: when

"Memo to the Far Right: when you've lost the support of people like O'Reilly, Coulter and Steele, you have to step back and wonder just how far from the pack you've strayed." I know a guy on a (nominally non-political) message board who would not see why he has to do either of those things. I'm talking about one of those people who thinks Rush Limbaugh doesn't go far enough to the right and the NRA is too wishy-washy. His only problem with the Birthers would probably be their failure to point out that Barack HUSSEIN Obama was born out of a jackal and sired by the Man-Goat Satanas Mekratrig.

Meanwhile, free clinics are

Meanwhile, free clinics are getting recovery funds. Free clinics tend to be staffed by level-headed people, often by people who do the work to do the work and who love the people who come to see them. These are just pilot funds which people accustomed to this sort of work know only too well can go away. Nonetheless, this is a window for local people during rough times, often a training ground for less expensive and more personalized medicine. If these can become centers of community and innovation and somewhat like a good rate-payer-owned utility, then people may figure out how to keep them going if the federal spigot goes the way the Soviet spigot went for the Cubans.

To Juan: What do you mean

To Juan: What do you mean the first seven Presidents weren't natural born citizens? Four were born in Virginia (Washington, Jefferson, Madison, and Monroe), two were born in Massachusetts (J & JQ Adams), and one (Jackson) was born on North/South Carolina border. Actually, the first nine were born in America but were subjects of the British Crown. Number 10, Tyler (another Virginian) was the first to be born after our Independence.

We're all suckers and have

We're all suckers and have asked for it - while we still wallow in the Left/Right Liberal/Conservative Democrat/Republican paradigm, we continue to get fleeced by a now Fascist Federal Government (that means merger of Corporations and State, in case there is any confusion). This President, McCain, most of Congress and the Senate - Democrat and Republican alike - they're all puppets working for the corporations. Anyone still whining about which of the two parties is in control is perpetuating the this criminal rule - the parties differ on the small points, while both promote war, pharmaceuticals, and central bank control - they both promote Facism and we are already there. Worse than being no 'change' at all, this President has made Fascism a top priority. Personal disclosure - I gave O's campaign a large sum of money and had his banner in my yard. At this point, I'm more interested in our recovering our crumbling Bill of Rights than whether a dem or repub wins anything - that should be all of our focus - THE BILL OF RIGHTS, AS WRITTEN - TO PREVENT TYRANNICAL RULE.

Progressives should ignore

Progressives should ignore the birth debate. Let the Repubs distract themselves over it. Their plan for this month is to focus the public debate on the "defects" in the health plans put forward so far. That's why they've retreated from presenting their own plan. In their own words they "don't want to create a distraction" from the problems in the Dem plans. This is amonth in which public option/single-payer plans should be sold by vacationing congresspeople to their constituents.

Let's get this right - this

Let's get this right - this is the month when constituents should be selling single-payer health plans to their Congresspeople!!!! Let's get busy!

If the democrats acted like

If the democrats acted like the wing nut republicans, they wouldn't be reelected. Let's hope the same thing is true for the republicans. All this garbage is just to keep the debate away from healthcare and we should just let the wing nuts disappear into oblivion.

Let them look and dig - for

Let them look and dig - for birth certificates or whatever they want. No President should be above the closest public scrutiny. We paid the price for failing to look closely at George W Bush. Non-issues will fall by the wayside and real ones will get traction. This whole debate is healthy and revealing.

I say cool it birth

I say cool it birth righters! - respect our President and our country.

Regarding Obama having a

Regarding Obama having a beer with the Harvard professor and the Cambridge cop ----- I wonder why the lady who called 911 to report the suspected break-in was not invited. She was the concerned, alert citizen who was looking out for her neighbor (as we all should do). She certainly should have been invited to the White House to meet with the President, the professor, and the cop.

1) Mr Teska: Hamilton was

1) Mr Teska: Hamilton was born in W Indies of British parents, he does not meet the criterion...... 2) the courts are going to hear the birth case...stand by..... 3) give everybody free basic healthcare and stop screwing around......it's the doctors, stupid!!!

This whole debate may seem

This whole debate may seem silly to most Truthout readers. It is silly, and the charges totally without merit. So was the claim that Kerry's medals were fake and that he did nothing to deserve them, but that lost him the presidency. So were the charges that Clinton was a murderer, yet many people still believe that. So were the charges that the Clintons had illegal real estate dealings, yet the probe into those charges went on and expanded throughout his entire presidency, until they finally caught him lying about an affair. My point is that it doesn't have to be true or rational to have a big effect.

The issue isn't Obama's

The issue isn't Obama's birth certificate, or Pelosi not being briefed by the CIA, or even Single Payer. It is about the wrong doing by Bush and Cheney and their Torture Advocating Lawyers AND the unwillingness of our Elected Democrats to a. Enforce Federal Laws and b. Get Voters what they want. Until Obama and our Democrats in Congress accept that They Must Deal With the Bush-Cheney crimes, The Obama Administration IS In Deep Trouble. This isn't going away, but the Democrats are getting closer to the 2010 and Disaster! SIGN THE PETITIONS Demanding both a Commission of Inquiry and a Special Prosecutor For All Their Crimes at ANGRYVOTERS.ORG http://ANGRYVOTERS.ORG .

Our of curiosity, why is it

Our of curiosity, why is it that important that he is born in the US? The law. Why are people letting this farce become some sort of national spectacle? It is not Obama's birthplace but his performance as a politician that needs to be looked at. A man that campaigned as a progressive for "change that we can believe in" has decided to adopt a largely centrist position on pretty much ... everything. That is the real issue. Sometimes you have to wonder whether or not the media is bringing this issue to prominence so that real issues are ignored and neglected.

RICK ABRAHAM, I LOVED YOUR

RICK ABRAHAM, I LOVED YOUR COMMENT! IT WAS INSIGHTFUL AND LACKED ALL FORM OF EGOMANIACISIM.

I worked on the Nadar

I worked on the Nadar campaign. In desperation I voted for Kerry, yech! I voted for Pres. Obama who is right of Nixon. The "center" is now so far right and Mr. Obama is selling his constituents down a polluted river. Mr. Nadar, Rep. Kucinich, nor (senator?) Paul will be allowed to run. "We were so many. We were working as one". Fugs. We stopped the Vietnam war. Can social activism prevail again? I'm a Wobbly. Workers of the world unite!

"We paid the price for

"We paid the price for failing to look closely at George W Bush" Many of us looked long and hard into GWB's record, abilities and qualifications, and were thoroughly mystified when so many of our countrymen voted for him. Twice.

Rather than howl with

Rather than howl with derisive laughter at the mud these industry paid groups throw against the wall hoping for some adhesion along with the distraction we should brace ourselves for the next round of insanity cooked up to thwart the will of the people and their honest representatives. It will be strong, unceasing and of course, crazy as hell. What does not incarcerate Rove and his ilk only makes them stronger. The demonstrations by the right to discount the birthers/bigots only serves to gain them some sense of legitimacy when they are most likely fueling these crazies with glee.

"Birthers" who claim Obama

"Birthers" who claim Obama is foreign-born are echoing Goebbels, who liked to claim that Roosevelt was a Jew: There is no factual basis, the intent is to undermine and denigrate, and both rest on the theory that a lie repeated loudly enough and often enough will always convince someone. The difference is that while Goebbels had tight control over what Germans could hear, listening to Lou Dobbs is a choice.

There are three nations in

There are three nations in the United States of America: the Democrats, the Republicans, and the Americans. This division has served the Bankers, Media and Traders, who direct the corporations, that direct the elected 537, who make the laws that imprison 300,000,000 citizens of the United States in the rules, called law. BTW this creation of laws is entirely without citizen representation. Obama's Health care Insurance is not health care. It does not provide health care. We the people do not want insurance, we want health care entitlement. Health care is an entitlement. Every single American is entitled to the very best health care that science can package for doctors to deliver and the government should pay for it all. While, we are at at, the people's health care act should obligate Governmental expenditures on health care to be three or more times governmental expenditures on military and homeland expenditures.

Listening to the pompous

Listening to the pompous ignorance of the increasing majority of elected officials during floor "debates" on C-SPAN has become almost as entertaining as Jon Stewart. The flip side is that this is state of discourse in our "democracy." Thank you Rupert Murdoch and the K Street Project for dumbing us down so much you could steal our economy right out from under us. A lot of historical factors have impeded our progress as a nation, but this has to be an all-time low (ranking IMHO right down there with the Civil War). I just hope enough voters (too many of whom voted for the idiots) get the memo that we need to fire about 450 out of the 537 members of Congress. And no, I no longer care who has the majority, the ignorance has no boundaries. Although I must say the bat-poop does largely fall on the right, leaving the rest to be, as Bill Maher has said, a good party for bankers, hedge-fund managers and corporate CEOs.

You know, I seem to remember

You know, I seem to remember something about Henry Gates getting arrested for yelling at a policeman while in his home. And yet a bunch of white republicans can scream down any rational conversation about health care at a town meeting. You gotta wonder if they weren't racially profiled as good white folks who didn't need the cuffs slapped on them.

this health care debate has

this health care debate has done more than any issue perhaps in the history of this country of show directly the deep pocketed lobbiest buy votes in our congress and how extensively they try to influence the public debate. Many representative's positions again public option are so illogical, so full of holes and dependent on false charges that it is obvious they aren't looking for facts or seeking public opinion, and they certainly aren't try to education their constituents. It's a corrupt government and the health care debate is showing it more than any other issue, showing it to more people than any other issue, showing it more blatantly than any other issue. We need a revolution. I have heard a number of people opine that our governance would be better if we just picked a random group of people off the street and sent them to Washington. I think that's right. How can we do it?
