The GOP is willing to disrupt the health care debate if they can't win it. Yesterday in Tampa, a mob of Glenn Beck supporters nearly caused a riot.

Note: Stephen C. Webster writes for Raw Story the latest example of extreme right-wing demagoguery in Tampa on Thursday, this time inspired by right-wing Fox News's Glenn Beck: "In a stunning display of anger, Florida Republicans and fans of Fox editorialist Glenn Beck turned a Tampa healthcare forum into a "near riot," one reporter said, as they attempted to enter the meeting hall and drown out a group of community organizers and a member of congress. There were at least two reports of violence at the forum. "The meeting which was scheduled to begin at 6:00 at the Children's Board of Hillsborough County drew hundreds of people who quickly began to overwhelm staff and event organizers at the front entrance," reported Tampa news station 10 Connects....

"Thursday's forum/near riot was sponsored by state Rep. Betty Reed, D-Tampa, and the Service Employees International Union, who apparently had hoped to hold something of a pep rally for President Obama's health care reform proposal," noted St. Petersburg Times reporter Adam Smith. He continued: "Instead, hundreds of vocal critics turned out, many of them saying they had been spurred on through the Tampa 912 activist group promoted by conservative radio and television personality Glenn Beck. Others had received e-mails from the Hillsborough Republican party that urged people to speak out against the plan and offered talking points to challenge supporters." Such "mobs" have been denounced in recent days by Democratic lawmakers, while journalists like MSNBC's Rachel Maddow have revealed the corporate interests and Republican operatives that bankroll and organize these town hall disruptions.

Right-Wing Turncoat Gives the Inside Scoop on Why Conservatives Are Rampaging Town Halls
By Frank Schaeffer

The Republican Old Guard are in the fix an atheist would be in if Jesus showed up and raised his mother from the dead: Their world view has just been shattered. Obama's election has driven them over the edge. Consider Former Congressman Dick Armey. Several far right foundations and the multitrillion dollar health-insurance industry have teamed up with him to organize the far right foot soldiers of the Republican Party to intimidate people speaking on behalf of health-care reform. They are using my old shock troops - given many of these folks were first energized by the Evangelical pro-life movement that my late father and I started in the 1970s. What we did to clinics they are now doing to congressmen and others speaking out for health care reform.

Having failed at the ballot box, having watched their Fox News-organized "tea parties" fizzle the intimidation tactics which the Republicans have embraced are being used in a well-financed, top-down orchestrated fake grass roots campaign by corporate interests to try and protect the profits of the insurance business. Armey's FreedomWorks is organizing against health care reform. Armey's lobbying firm represents pharmaceutical companies including Bristol-Myers Squibb. Armey's lobbying firm also represents the trade group for the life insurance industry. FreedomWorks is supporting the status quo at all costs. (They are also fans of fossil fuels. Armey's lobbying firm represents Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Prime Minister of the UAE, on energy related issues.)

Last year, the Wall Street Journal exposed FreedomWorks for building "amateur-looking" websites to promote far right interests of Armey. FreedomWorks represents a top-down, corporate-friendly approach that's been the norm for conservative organizations for years. How do I know this is the norm? Because I used to have strategy meetings with the late Jack Kemp and Dick Army and the rest of the Republican gang about using their business ties to help finance the pro-life movement to defeat Democrats. I know this script. I helped write it.

Democratic members of Congress are being harassed by angry, sign-carrying mobs and disruptive behavior at local town halls. It's the tactic we used to follow abortion providers around their neighborhoods. "Protesters" surrounded Rep. Tim Bishop (D-NY) and forced police officers to have to escort him to his car for safety. We used to do the same to Dr. Tiller... until someone killed him.

How Can the Right Stoop So Low?

I used to know Dick Armey quite well. One of my sons even worked for him as an intern. I knew Armey in the context of his being a fan of my late Evangelical Religious Right leader father Francis Schaeffer. (Back in the day when I was a right wing "pro-life" organizer who has long since quit the Republicans in disgust at their - our - descent into extremism and hate.) Armey was once a decent guy, whatever his political views. How could he stoop so low as to be organizing what amounts to America's Brown Shirts today?

I think I know what happened to him, Gingrich and the rest: They can't compute that their white man-led conservative revolution is dead. They can't reconcile their idea of themselves with the fact that white men like them don't run the country any more - and never will again. To them the black president is leading a column of the "other" into their promised land. Gays, immigrants, blacks, progressives, even a female Hispanic appointed to the Supreme Court... for them this is the Apocalypse.

The last presidential election (to paraphrase Bart Simpson) "broke their brains." What else could explain their embrace of intimidation - rather than discourse - over the health care debate and such unsavory moments of madness as the Republicans accusing Obama and Judge Sonia Sotomayor of racism, knowing full well that they'd just destroyed their chances with the Hispanic community forever?

    The "Scorched Earth Policy"

Dick Army and company have been driven mad by their reversal, not just of political fortunes but of seeing that they've wasted their lives. They now know they were wrong: about the country, the free market, war for fun and profit, and what the American people really want. They made their best case and were rejected by the American people - and by history. Bush was their man and he turned out to be a fool. So now all the the Republican gurus have left is what the defeated Germans of World War Two had: a scorched earth policy. If they can't win then everyone must go down. Obama must fail! The country must fail!

The Lobbyist-run Groups "Americans for Prosperity " and "FreedomWorks/ Dick Armey-Orchestrated Memo:

Here is a leaked excerpt from the folks organizing the intimidation campaign:

  • Artificially Inflate Your Numbers: "Spread out in the hall and try to be in the front half. The objective is to put the Rep on the defensive with your questions and follow-up. The Rep should be made to feel that a majority, and if not, a significant portion of at least the audience, opposes the socialist agenda of Washington."

  • Be Disruptive Early And Often: "You need to rock-the-boat early in the Rep's presentation, Watch for an opportunity to yell out and challenge the Rep's statements early."

  • Try To "Rattle Him," Not Have An Intelligent Debate: "The goal is to rattle him, get him off his prepared script and agenda. If he says something outrageous, stand up and shout out and sit right back down. Look for these opportunities before he even takes questions."
  •     The Last Republican Tactic: Outright Lies

A barrage of outright lies, wherein the Democrats are being accused of wanting to launch a massive euthanasia program against the elderly, free abortions for everyone, and "a government takeover" of health-care is now being combined with physical intimidation that in several cases has required police escorts to protect pro health-care reform speakers surrounded by angry plants sent to disrupt public forums on the health-care issue. Demonstrators hung Rep. Frank Kratovil (D-MD) in effigy outside of his office. (Missing from the reporting of these stories - with the notable exception of Rachel Maddow - is the fact that much of these protests are coordinated by public relations firms and lobbyists who have a stake in opposing President Obama's reforms.

There is no daylight between the Republican Party, the health-care insurance industry, far right leaders like Dick Armey, the legion of insurance lobbyists, and now, a small army of thugs. All we're missing is actual uniforms, otherwise we now have a full blown American version of the Nazi Brown Shirts.

No, I don't believe that these people are about to take over the country. No, the sky is not falling. But the Republican Party is. It is now profoundly anti-American.

The health-insurance industry is run by very smart and very greedy people who have sunk to a new low. So has the Republican Party's leadership that will not stand up and denounce the likes of Dick Armey for helping organize roving bands of thugs trying to strip the rest of us of the ability to be heard when it comes to the popular will on reforming health care.

        Conclusion: the Fascist Formula

Here's the emerging American version of the fascist's formula: combine millions of dollars of lobbyists' money with embittered troublemakers who have a small army of not terribly bright white angry people (collected over decades through pro-life mass mailing networks) at their beck and call, ever ready to believe any myth or lie circulated by the semi literate and completely and routinely misinformed right wing - Evangelical religious underground. Then put his little mob together with the insurance companies' big bucks. That's how it works - American Brown Shirts at the ready.

What's the results of the fascist formula for the rest of us? Well, think how this "method" worked against Dr. Tiller's abortion clinic and how that story ended. In this case a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to save our economy from going bankrupt because of spiraling health care costs may be lost, not because of a better argument, but because of lies backed up by anti-democratic embittered thuggery. The motive? Revenge on America by the Old White Guys of the far right, and greed by the insurance industry.

        What Can Be Done?

It's time that this whole shabby (and insane) business be exposed, vilified in run out of town on a rail by whatever responsible Republicans - if any - that are still in the party and who want to see the fortunes of their party revived. Republican leaders taking insurance industry money via lobbying firms and using it to organize what amounts to roving bands of thugs not only need to be exposed but thrown out of the public debate forever. They should become absolute pariahs.

It's time to give this garbage in name: insurance industry funded fascism.

    Nice folks...

    Nice folks...

    WOW... Thank you Frank

WOW... Thank you Frank Schaeffer for putting into words the feelings I have had as of late. Sadly I think you hit the nail on the head with this article.

A note : At town hall

A note : At town hall meetings, have at least one policeman there. Arrest people for disturbing the peace, not for exercising their first amendment rights, but for disturbing the peace. Oh I'm sorry, that's just for democrats at republican conventions.

    Sadly, your writings are all

Sadly, your writings are all too true. It is vitally important that the logic of National Health Care be realized by the general public. Every health-care worker I know (I am a physician myself), is in full support. It should be supported by all; including those of conservative views. Here in Hawaii, we've learned about these scare tactics: the Calvinist missionaries taught us to pray, when we looked up the land was gone. Without exception, all plantation owners were Republicans - that's why we mostly now Democrats.

    I agree with Mr. Schaeffer's

I agree with Mr. Schaeffer's conclusions -- the Astroturf organizers do smack of Fascism. I don't agree with the motives, though. It's more likely the Republican Party realizes that it has fallen out of grace and the only way to get back into power is to make sure that Obama and the rest of the Democratic Party fail. Unfortunately, even though Lee Atwater and Karl Rove are gone from the center stage, their tactics remain. People like Armey have manipulated the wingnuts in the Astroturf organization to do their dirty work: They can deny association, but can claim victory if health care reform fails. It's a dirty political game they play at the expense of the future of our country.

    American brown shirts

American brown shirts indeed. Please tell me this isn't our Weimar republic. It certainly seems about as ineffective.

    Wow. Thank you Frank, for

Wow. Thank you Frank, for proving you have no idea who real conservative Christians are, what they really want, and why they are so angry that their democracy is being turned into a socialist state. And for the record, the nazis were socialists - left wing, not right. We are against socialism, and will resist it no matter where it comes from. It's a classic left wing tactic to accuse your opponent of what you are doing. What are you doing, Frank?

    Great summation of our

Great summation of our current situation. It's going to get uglier. The dying gasp of the Republican Party of old will be a sweet thing to behold if we can stand together and make it happen, peacefully but with strength and conviction - this may be the last chance to save our country from plunging into a very dark time.

    The 2nd (3rd? 4th?) American

The 2nd (3rd? 4th?) American Civil War will come within a few more decades? Within a single decade? The politics of this country are almost completely separated from reality.

    Agreed, the republican party

Agreed, the republican party has become extremely anti-American. They have attempted to throw out most of the constitution, represent corporations instead of voters, take bribes for legislation, have a kill anyone not christian agenda, organize disruptions at town hall meetings, and get VERY upset when they don't win one of their rigged elections. They should have their own country somewhere else. Let see, they can call it - Nazi Germany, or how about the Soviet Union. Give them Alaska and kick it out of the US. I think that would make them happy. Living with only those of their own ilk.

He's not a turncoat. He is

He's not a turncoat. He is a man who has come to his senses.

    Anyone who knows the history

Anyone who knows the history of the "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich", and the history of the steady acquisition of both legitimacy and power of the NASDP in Weimar Germany in the 1930s should readily recognize the American Brown Shirts -- with or without their uniforms. The tactics are the same; the objective is the same: destruction of our democratic republic and replacement with a fascist dictatorship. Nixon, Reagan, the Bushes and Cheney are the vanguard; militarization of our police forces and the corruption/co-optation of our elected representatives are part and parcel of the overall plan. Conspiracy theory? No...a GENUINE conspiracy, concocted long ago, perhaps in the 19th century, and festering in our national bloodstream ever since.

Anyone ever see the film 'A

Anyone ever see the film 'A Face in a Crowd'? Not exactly the situation... but close. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/A_Face_In_The_Crowd#Plot

It's deja vu all over again.

It's deja vu all over again. I'm having a 1979 nightmare where the federal system is hounded and jammed up by some very energetic zealots who are stoked up on Ayn Rand and the craving of more, more, more. I fear that, again, they'll bring the country to it's knees by vetoing any and all progressive changes. It's the GOP who threaten to filibuster ALL Democratic policy initiatives, something Democrats didn't do during their period in the minority. If all goes according to script, Obama will "fail" and one economic disaster after another will ensue. Then, as before, they'll jump up on the soapbox and tell voters the only solution is de-regulation, tax cuts and allow the "private sector" to save us. Hopefully, a wiser, new generation will resist.

    Its like the Beer Hall

Its like the Beer Hall brawls where Hitler got his start by serving the mob rule and reaction towards unwarranted fear. The conservatives have gone mad and are appealing to mob mentality to destroy Obama and all who voted for him even if it turns to anarchy. Its time to blow the whistle on this dominionist fascist mentality.

There's a video of an AARP

There's a video of an AARP information session disrupted by a man posing as some sort of anti-big-government patriot. There was no violence involved, but there were too many people who were easily distracted and diverted from getting information about why AARP is supporting Obama's plan for health care. People have got to get serious about getting informed.

    The notion that there's no

The notion that there's no essential difference between the major parties grows ever more untenable....

Mr Peck, You do not know

Mr Peck, You do not know of what you speak, but then you appear to be just another case of the sadly uninformed or misled Republican. Just because the Nazi's used the word socialist in their party name does not make them political socialists. Do some homework. Nazi's were fascist's and fascism is a form of extreme right wing ideology that celebrates the nation or a race as an organic community transcending all other loyalties. Hitler hated genuine socialists and sent many of them to his death camps. Furthermore, we are not becoming socialist. We are evaluating the creation a government regulated PRIVATE healthcare industry. Actual socialized medicine would mean the doctors, hospitals and all medical industry would be owned and run by the government. The word "socialism" is bandied around a lot by the Republican fear mongering machine without understanding it true definition. In truth we will probably end up with a private healthcare system interacting with a government regulated or goverment run medical insurance entity, not a socialist healthcare system. Get informed, and get your facts straight.

    Does everything in this

Does everything in this country have to get compared to Nazi Germany and WWII? Simply put, these protests are legal. The town hall meetings are somewhere between stupid and ridiculous. All they have ended up being is a venue for Republican operatives to throw monkey wrenches...with which they have an endless supply. The debate has happened. We want health care reform. Time to have our legislature vote on it and stop grandstanding. They are doing nothing but holding these farcical meetings in order to sound bi-partisan on health care. Well excuse me, but my health is not affiliated with any party. They need to do what is right. They need to vote to reform the system.

The problem is not that the

The problem is not that the Armeys and the fake grass-roots sites and the lying lobbyists and the rest of the organizers of this disgusting false propaganda campaign are trying to sell snake oil. The problem is the same one we had in the run-up to the Iraq disaster: millions of Americans rush out to BUY snake oil. We are famous the world over for having the highest percentage of dumb-as-a-stump gullible dupes in our population. The solution, unfortunately, is to educate two or three generations of children to be competent parents and break this cycle of anti-intellectualism and willing ignorance. Short of that, I wish Obama would be a hell of a lot less willing to compromise...

    Great article. I believe

Great article. I believe Frank Schaeffer is speaking more clearly than anyone else on this subject. He says he left the party because of their "extremism and hate". It's a clear last sentence: "It's time to give this garbage in name: insurance industry funded fascism."

    This is one powerful,

This is one powerful, revealing, must-read essay. It is a riveting, explosive description of what the right wing Republicans have become. If everyone read this, absorbed it, thought deeply about it, we might have a chance to overcome this movement, to bury it once and for all. But alas, I fear that they will rise up again, especially if Obama fails, if the economy doesn't recover soon enough, if health care reform doesn't pass, if the Senate defeats energy and climate legislation. Then they'll be back. And soon.

    I'm outraged that the

I'm outraged that the government is poised to REWARD these guys by forcing Americans to purchase their products via a mandate! Although I currently pay the small fortune required to keep my health insurance, I'm seriously considering dropping coverage if the government makes it mandatory. Someone needs to become the Supreme Court test case!

    Congressman Farr is gonig to

Congressman Farr is gonig to be giving townhall meeting this week in the Monterey and Santa Cruz areas, very liberal areas. We do have rabid right-wingers here. Unfortunately I have to go back to work next week (I'm a school teacher). I cannot go. If I were to go and these Fascist goons showed up to disrupt things, I would first scream at them to sit down and shut up. If that wouldn't work, I would hope that enough progressive minded people like me would be there to confront these people face to face. if a fist fight were to break out, so be it. Unfortunately not enough people stood up to the Brown Shirt and Black Shirt mobs in Europe 80 years ago. Dialogue and descency will not work with these bullies: a few punches top the face would probably cower them!

While I agree with much you

While I agree with much you say, and am delighted to read someone who tells it straight instead of wallowing in the spine challenged blubbering of Democratic "leaders" in thrall of a fantasy of bipartisanship, there's one bit of your story that misses the mark. The fascist techniques we are seeing are not a new phenomenon in the Rethuglican universe. Nine years ago we saw a riot by Astroturf Rethug operatives on the payroll of Rethug Congresspeople shut down the Miami recount in order to pass the legitimacy of Florida's vote to a Supreme Court dominated by Rethugs. Boy Caligula "won" and it was eight years of salad days for the corporate and other wealthy interests who that now finance a new round of Astroturf destructions of democratic process. Old dogs can learn new tricks, but why bother if the old ones still get them the bone? So while Armey, his sponsors, his helpers, and his shills may indeed have gone bonkers at the outrage of a black President and a Latina SC Justice in less than a year, that madness can't explain tactics that aren't new, just more widespread. FR PECK: How helpful of you to claim Schaeffer doesn't know "what conservatives really want", give us the howler of the Nazis--the textbook example of fascists; try looking in any politics textbook--being left wing socialists, and then, having shown us you don't know what socialism is, claiming that conservatives are against socialism. Be nice to hear β€œwhat conservatives really want” instead of what they undyingly oppose. The right also often uses the technique you claim is pure lefty. However the right is much more reliant on the technique of accusing the left of doing what it isn't, as in the right's response to the current tinkering with health care.

    What about the Soros-funded

What about the Soros-funded pro-health care reform demonstrations? If a group is funded by Soros, that's OK? BTW 53% believe the president's plan will increase costs, and 50% fear the quality of their health care will go down under the president's plan, so it is disingenuous to imply that resistance to Obamacare is only due to groups being funded by someone.

    even if the republican party

even if the republican party destroys itself, the capitalist interests behind will continue trying to assert their will. they will not go quietly. they will co-opt, buy, cheat, intimidate and finally kill their way to securing themselves, whatever the cost to the world. one way or another things will get uglier.
