The Brutal Truth About America’s Healthcare

by: Guy Adams  |  The Independent UK

They came in their thousands, queuing through the night to secure one of the coveted wristbands offering entry into a strange parallel universe where medical care is a free and basic right and not an expensive luxury. Some of these Americans had walked miles simply to have their blood pressure checked, some had slept in their cars in the hope of getting an eye-test or a mammogram, others had brought their children for immunisations that could end up saving their life.

In the week that Britain's National Health Service was held aloft by Republicans as an "evil and Orwellian" example of everything that is wrong with free healthcare, these extraordinary scenes in Inglewood, California yesterday provided a sobering reminder of exactly why President Barack Obama is trying to reform the US system.

The LA Forum, the arena that once hosted sell-out Madonna concerts, has been transformed – for eight days only – into a vast field hospital. In America, the offer of free healthcare is so rare, that news of the magical medical kingdom spread rapidly and long lines of prospective patients snaked around the venue for the chance of getting everyday treatments that many British people take for granted.

In the first two days, more than 1,500 men, women and children received free treatments worth $503,000 (£304,000). Thirty dentists pulled 471 teeth; 320 people were given standard issue spectacles; 80 had mammograms; dozens more had acupuncture, or saw kidney specialists. By the time the makeshift medical centre leaves town on Tuesday, staff expect to have dispensed $2m worth of treatments to 10,000 patients.

The gritty district of Inglewood lies just a few miles from the palm-lined streets of Beverly Hills and the bright lights of Hollywood, but is a world away. And the residents who had flocked for the free medical care, courtesy of mobile charity Remote Area Medical, bore testament to the human cost of the healthcare mess that President Obama is attempting to fix.

Christine Smith arrived at 3am in the hope of seeing a dentist for the first time since she turned 18. That was almost eight years ago. Her need is obvious and pressing: 17 of her teeth are rotten; some have large visible holes in them. She is living in constant pain and has been unable to eat solid food for several years.

"I had a gastric bypass in 2002, but it went wrong, and stomach acid began rotting my teeth. I've had several jobs since, but none with medical insurance, so I've not been able to see a dentist to get it fixed," she told The Independent. "I've not been able to chew food for as long as I can remember. I've been living on soup, and noodles, and blending meals in a food mixer. I'm in constant pain. Normally, it would cost $5,000 to fix it. So if I have to wait a week to get treated for free, I'll do it. This will change my life."

Along the hall, Liz Cruise was one of scores of people waiting for a free eye exam. She works for a major supermarket chain but can't afford the $200 a month that would be deducted from her salary for insurance. "It's a simple choice: pay my rent, or pay my healthcare. What am I supposed to do?" she asked. "I'm one of the working poor: people who do work but can't afford healthcare and are ineligible for any free healthcare or assistance. I can't remember the last time I saw a doctor."

Although the Americans spend more on medicine than any nation on earth, there are an estimated 50 million with no health insurance at all. Many of those who have jobs can't afford coverage, and even those with standard policies often find it doesn't cover commonplace procedures. California's unemployed – who rely on Medicaid – had their dental care axed last month.

Julie Shay was one of the many, waiting to slide into a dentist's chair where teeth were being drilled in full view of passers-by. For years, she has been crossing over the Mexican border to get her teeth done on the cheap in Tijuana. But recently, the US started requiring citizens returning home from Mexico to produce a passport (previously all you needed was a driver's license), and so that route is now closed. Today she has two abscesses and is in so much pain she can barely sleep. "I don't have a passport, and I can't afford one. So my husband and I slept in the car to make sure we got seen by a dentist. It sounds pathetic, but I really am that desperate."

"You'd think, with the money in this country, that we'd be able to look after people's health properly," she said. "But the truth is that the rich, and the insurance firms, just don't realise what we are going through, or simply don't care. Look around this room and tell me that America's healthcare don't need fixing."

President Obama's healthcare plans had been a central plank of his first-term programme, but his reform package has taken a battering at the hands of Republican opponents in recent weeks. As the Democrats have failed to coalesce around a single, straightforward proposal, their rivals have seized on public hesitancy over "socialised medicine" and now the chance of far-reaching reform is in doubt.

Most damaging of all has been the tide of vociferous right-wing opponents whipping up scepticism at town hall meetings that were supposed to soothe doubts. In Pennsylvania this week, Senator Arlen Specter was greeted by a crowd of 1,000 at a venue designed to accommodate only 250, and of the 30 selected speakers at the event, almost all were hostile.

The packed bleachers in the LA Forum tell a different story. The mobile clinic has been organised by the remarkable Remote Area Medical. The charity usually focuses on the rural poor, although they worked in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina. Now they are moving into more urban venues, this week's event in Los Angeles is believed to be the largest free healthcare operation in the country.

Doctors, dentists and therapists volunteer their time, and resources to the organisation. To many US medical professionals, it offers a rare opportunity to plug into the public service ethos on which their trade was supposedly founded. "People come here who haven't seen a doctor for years. And we're able to say 'Hey, you have this, you have this, you have this'," said Dr Vincent Anthony, a kidney specialist volunteering five days of his team's time. "It's hard work, but incredibly rewarding. Healthcare needs reform, obviously. There are so many people falling through the cracks, who don't get care. That's why so many are here."

Ironically, given this week's transatlantic spat over the NHS, Remote Area Medical was founded by an Englishman: Stan Brock. The 72-year-old former public schoolboy, Taekwondo black belt, and one-time presenter of Wild Kingdom, one of America's most popular animal TV shows, left the celebrity gravy train in 1985 to, as he puts it, "make people better".

Today, Brock has no money, no income, and no bank account. He spends 365 days a year at the charity events, sleeping on a small rolled-up mat on the floor and living on a diet made up entirely of porridge and fresh fruit. In some quarters, he has been described, without too much exaggeration, as a living saint.

Though anxious not to interfere in the potent healthcare debate, Mr Brock said yesterday that he, and many other professionals, believes the NHS should provide a benchmark for the future of US healthcare.

"Back in 1944, the UK government knew there was a serious problem with lack of healthcare for 49.7 million British citizens, of which I was one, so they said 'Hey Mr Nye Bevan, you're the Minister for Health... go fix it'. And so came the NHS. Well, fast forward now 66 years, and we've got about the same number of people, about 49 million people, here in the US, who don't have access to healthcare."

"I've been very conservative in my outlook for the whole of my life. I've been described as being about 90,000 miles to the right of Attila the Hun. But I think one reaches the reality that something doesn't work... In this country something has to be done. And as a proud member of the US community but a loyal British subject to the core, I would say that if Britain could fix it in 1944, surely we could fix it here in America.

I know this is the truth

I know this is the truth because we recently had a RAM clinic where I work. People called from miles away, needing dentures or bridgework that RAM was unable to do. People cried, so happy to get teeth extracted that had been giving them pain for a long time, for eyeglasses they could not afford to buy, yet our government promises this to Iraqis? Some people were too ill to stand in line for entry; at least some of these people were able to get in by the workers recognizing this and taking them on in. It is terrible in this country that people have had to resort to this. Thank God for Stan Brock. But at the same time, many, many people cannot go to the clinics and the clinics cannot be everywhere, so for every person that does get services, many more do not.

Too bad Obama is just

Too bad Obama is just another weak kneed Democrat. Sunday morning we have confirmed that his administration has scuttled the public option--something Chicago pol Rahm Emanuel signaled weeks ago. The fix was in. This is not change I can believe in. From the great hope to the great compromiser.

yes, the corporation and the

yes, the corporation and the insurance comoany is going to win this battle, because they fight mean and dirty and they lied and lied. and what the public is going to do when you're facing with the insurance-giants who already bought a lot of congressmen and now they are hiring the angry mob to disrupt the democratic process of heath reform debate. i don't know why this country can't afford to take care all the people's health care needs!! thanks for the comparison of the brits and the usa's health costs!! why is this story not in the front page of nytimes??

I don't see how health care

I don't see how health care can be taken care of by itself. We have to get the jobs going again by manufacturing and public projects so people have the money to pay the taxes required to change health care. I do not think the Obama administration is serious about fixing the economy; therefore, they are only talking about fixing health care to keep people pacified for a while longer. If we drastically change the taxation system where the rich pay their fair share that would correct the immediate problem, but then the jobs would have to be created again to keep it going. What we need is to force the rich to step off their thrones and take back our Constitution and our country.

God Bless Stan Brock; what a

God Bless Stan Brock; what a hero. I wish I could thank him in person for taking this seriously and putting love into action for his fellow man. I am embarrassed that America has let it come to this. Deeply embarrassed.... We should be so ashamed of ourselves.

Henst, you are right, by the

Henst, you are right, by the time the fighting is over, this so called change will amount to nothing, which is what the powers that be wanted all along.....BUSINESS AS USUAL.......so much for the hyped "change" we were supposed to see.

I see your point, but i look

I see your point, but i look at these statistics and see a much different picture. And as for the masses of people showing up, it's only because it's free; no other reason. There are local free clinics everywhere in the US, and you can go there and get free treatment for regular symptoms. Broken arms and more are handled in the emergency room. You are not required to pay if you can prove you cannot afford it. Just as Lawyers provide 'pro-bono work, so do doctors. I am an American and I do NOT want more govt run health care. As the stat show in your article, we already have 45% of our health care run my the govt (VA, Medicare, Medicade and more). There should only be the VA, but that needs and is getting big improvements as I type. These are the problems in our medical system; NOT the private sector. The insurance companies are in pain because of the govt run programs. This is exactly what they wanted to accomplish from the beginning; eventual complete socialized health care. Anyway, that is how i see it.

Guy Adams doesn’t seem to

Guy Adams doesn’t seem to get it. He seems to think that Obama supports a single payer reform — a reform that would give us Americans a system that ressembled Britain’s NHS. But Obama does not and the plan that Congress will approve is one that will bring more money to the health care parasites and Big Pharma. Obama is out there stumping for a reform that will not bring relief to the people that are going to Brock’s clinics. We Americans have to rise up en masse to get the same health care coverage that members of Congress have.

I wish otherwise responsible

I wish otherwise responsible members of the media would cease giving Obama credit for "wanting" to reform the healthcare system in the United States! Obama has no intention of reforming access to essential health care for all Americans. His message is health insurance reform, which is a farce. How does he intend to hold insurance companies accountable, when it is STATE INSURANCE COMMISSIONERS who hold authority over insurance regulations? The federal government has no authority to regulate or supervise insurance companies (except for flood insurance). Obama, Rahm Emanuel, Max Baucus, Kent Conrad and all the other turn-coat Democrats can go pound salt in a rat hole. Enough already with kissing up to Obama as a reformist -- he is no such thing. He is a tool for the corporations. This uncritical adulation of Obama makes me sick. And, I can't afford to get sick!

The President just caved,

The President just caved, YET AGAIN. The right-wingers who thought everything was just fine the way it was will got their way, YET AGAIN. Oh well, some national emergencies can be swept under the rug for future generations to deal with. I JUST WONDER WHY WE EVEN HAVE ELECTIONS IS THIS COUNTRY IF THE WILL OF THE PEOPLE WHO VOTED IS NO LONGER RESPECTED.

Abandonment of the public

Abandonment of the public option is just another in the line of broken promises from the Obama administration. The Democratic party does not yet realize this, but there are a growing number of Americans, myself included, that will be voting 3rd party next election. Don't try the "spoiler" talk - it won't work this time. You had your chance to make change, but you blew it!

I have been fortunate in

I have been fortunate in being in work for all of my life here in the UK and paid my National Insurance contribution each pay-day with my Income Tax towards the costs of our National Health Service. I've had Haemorroids, Appendicitis, Cardiac surgery (open-heart), a badly broken finger, non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma, a pacemaker fitted and dozens of follow-up consultations with expert specialists, all dealt with successfully at no additional charge to me. If the Luddites in the US call this Socialism - so what? To me, it is a country using its resources to pride health-care to its citizens irrespective of their ability to pay. I am unable to understand anyone in the US, probably the world's richest country, objecting to a similar system instead of a shameful situation where people are dying for lack of attention because of the inability to pay. THAT to me is Orwellian!!

And why wasn't this event

And why wasn't this event and others like it on the morning and nightly national news every day instead of the pre-programed hysterics of a small minority of stupid, ignorant, brainwashed conservatives???

"...these extraordinary

"...these extraordinary scenes in Inglewood, California yesterday provided a sobering reminder of exactly why President Barack Obama is trying to reform the US system." Yeah, that's the cover story anyway. However, the truth of the matter is that, "reform" is intended to GUT America's health care system so that the bailout of bankrupt financial institutions intimately tied to the Wall Street - City of London, axis of evil wildcat finance scam can proceed on the backs of America's elderly and sick. Why do we reprint this British CRAP? These people are nothing more than a bunch of marble mouthed liars. Cancel the bailout ... Pass HR 676 ... Reconstitute the Bank of the United States ... PROBLEM SOLVED.

if the public plan is out,

if the public plan is out, so is hope! I'd far rather have done NOTHING than to fix insurance profits, without a fix for the people. A no public fix is worse than what we started with. it with ultimately be used to blame the dems (they really must be dem) when this thing really blows up.

Change, Change, Change or

Change, Change, Change or Else! that's what some are saying with Obama. I say," patience gains all things" - including affordable, just, and fair health reform. Why do we expect Obama to be able to change much of anything after what we have all collectively lived through. Change requires sacrifice and the willingness to work through a process. Americans are like trying to herd cats. In the meantime, those who lack help were given some. Perhaps these extraordinary scenes could multiply city by city and state by state while those in control figure out that Inglewood was just the beginning of what is critically needed for many of our citizens.

With a tiny fraction of our

With a tiny fraction of our present healthcare budget devoted to basic supplementation of vitamins and a revised school education regarding nutrition and healthy sun exposure, we could avoid more than half of the expense for health care in our incredibly sickened country. The science is well developed in countless peer reviewed studies, but don't look to your M.D. or congressional experts to for this info - they were trained by and for the interests of Big Pharma, even if they don't know it. Free vitamin D, B12, C, Selenium and Iodine would cost 60 cents per day per citizen and eliminate most cancers and diabetes, while delaying the onset of heart disease and dementia by many, many years. Ask your Doc and they will dismiss you out of hand - but do your own research and you will find volumes on the subjects with clear proof - we live in a vitamin and mineral deficient society, and loaded with toxins. The food additives, such as MSG (and by it's thirty other legal aliases) and Aspartame account for a large fraction of the Neurodegenerative diseases - including blindness - that plague this generation. The FDA is corrupt and it's science is corrupt - all this talk of how to fund is pointless when the medical treatment itself causes more harm than good, while effective remedies and prevention costs only pennies a day. Pharma owns Washington - Get It?

So, for 16 years, Hillary

So, for 16 years, Hillary has been blamed for her "failed health care plan." But, the non-critical media will not blame Obama for HIS ultimate failure! The buck stops at Obama's desk. He didn't have the will, the passion, the commitment, the leadership, or the intention to do anything productive about healthcare reform for the people. Leadership? Not in his pay grade, apparently. Too bad he doesn't have a pair, like LBJ did. Obama cannot get anything done.

I, too, hate the

I, too, hate the ponderousness of the process and especially the Senate's ability to infuriate by not following the will of the people who elected them, but instead to knuckle to their benefactors, their financiers, and their own individual insufferable egos. But for members of the electorate (or anyone else, for that matter) to blame Obama for potentially coming up short on a Public Option or Single Payer is errant logic. Obama does not write legislation, Congress does. Obama can only sign it into law or veto it; that's the sole extent of his constitutional legislative authority. Take your wrath out on Congress, not on Obama, at least not unless or until he deserves it.

Did you mention anywhere

Did you mention anywhere that most of the people signing up were Mexican nationals.

Sadly, my expectations are

Sadly, my expectations are being met. I said during the presidential campaign Obama's health care proposal would be a total failure. It will not provide health care for everyone. It will be hugely expensive, and it basically will not work. What happens when his garbage is adopted and fails? That will be used by wrong-wingers as proof "government run" health care. Will Americans be able to figure out the problem is not that Obama's program "went too far", but that it did not go far enough? What we need is a single payer system. The British system, nor the Canadian system, nor any other system is perfect. But they are superior to what we have now, as least for the 40% of the population that is without any health insurance or are under insured. What we should be doing is looking at, for example Canada and Great Britain, identifying the strengths and weaknesses of their programs, then develop a program that adopts their strengths and avoids their weaknesses. This advantage of going last. That advantage has come at a steep price in terms of the lives of people denied health care because they cannot afford it. We have a responsibility to deliver a world class health care system, not an unworkable piece of garbage that simply will make the corporate medical industry even richer than now.

I personally stood in line

I personally stood in line for this event and it was overwhelming. We were turned away at 6am on the first day, and all the wristbands were given out by the second day FOR THE DURATION OF THE ENTIRE EVENT! if that's not an crying out for health care reform, than I don't know what is. Just for the record, I am one of the millions of Americans who is married and worked extremely hard to get a bachelors degree - all to graduate to an economy with no jobs. You have to have a job to get health insurance, and since I'm married and my husband works, we don't qualify for medicare. Oh, and his job doesn't offer health insurance. Like Bill Maher said, everything should not be for profit. And to wake up to hear that Obama has buckled on the public healthcare option??!! WTF!!!!!!! Like the person above stated, next election, I'm voting 3rd party! I may even leave this country before then.....

To Ray Wright - no they

To Ray Wright - no they weren't - it was every nationality - black, white, latino, asian, middle eastern, everything. I was there. Where you??

I'm Canadian. We here in

I'm Canadian. We here in Canada never have to face such terrible things. Reading about it is truly scary. We have government funded, single payer insurance that covers everything, every health bill. If I got sick tomorrow, I would not have to worry about Blue Cross "caps" on what they'll pay for, or where to scrape up the money to save my life. My government, the government of good old Canada, which I love, will pay the whole entire shot. All of it. Nor are there any such things as delusional Sarah Palin's "death panels" here. What a load of crap. I would never go south and live in the US, precisely because that place is completely and totally in thrall to the corporations and the weird, murderous situation they've imposed on Americans in the area of health care. Thank God I'm Canadian! Go out and fight, people. You have a right to the same kind of health cost stability and assurance Canadians have. All you have to do is take it, away from the phonies who are denying it to you now.....

The President is only ONE

The President is only ONE PERSON. He can only do what he can and has so many forces out to destroy his Presidency that I'm surprised that a lot of these comments blame him for lack of change. Blame the Republicans, who actually got a lot of their health care reforms in the bill, blame the hard-line right and the tremendous amount of closet racists for hating that a Black man is leader of the free world. I, for one, am deeply disappointed that there won't be a public option. But, I'm not going to blame President Obama. I'm blaming the greedy stock holders of pharmaceutical companies and filthy-rich doctors who don't want to help anyone but themselves. Shame on America, not President Obama.

Sad to hear that Obama is

Sad to hear that Obama is planning on caving on the public option. The insurance companies will continue to make out like fat rats, now with more clients to exploit (if insurance becomes mandatory)--and we see who really runs this country. Not Democrats or even Republicans but Corporations. As far as the Palin's "Death Panel"--it is an ugly truth that every dying person in a hospital, hooked up to machinery 24/7 to keep them going as long as possible, pumped full of drugs constantly, is nothing but a huge CASH COW for the pharmaceutical and hospital industry, and you had better believe this is how they see them.... and they are not about to lose this source of money pumped into their system if people are encouraged to consult with doctors for alternatives. If nothing is said to the contrary, it is taken as a go-ahead for the most expensive treatment by hospitals. A friend of mine plans to get DO NOT RESUSCITATE tattooed onto her inner arm to protect her family from financial ruin.

American life expectancy is

American life expectancy is lower than Britain because of lifestyle and other factors, not health care. We have higher homicide and traffic fatality rates, and when those are corrected for, we live as long or longer than the Brits. Plus, we have a greater obesity problem. Asian Americans have a healthier lifestyle, and they have a life expectancy of 84.9 years.

Also to Ray Wright. Would

Also to Ray Wright. Would it have more acceptable had all participants been verifiable, white, "real" Americans? What difference does it make? This is a problem all people are facing, whether they have insurance or not.

This charity heal-in was a

This charity heal-in was a tragedy for the United States. We should never have needed it. And it took a British paper to report on it fully. And we will continue to need them. To those doctrinaire cretins who wail about government bureaucrats getting between doctors and patients, are you really happy about the business wonks who NOW get between you and your doctors? We have MBAs -- or less! -- directing our doctors as to what procedures they're allowed to perform and what medications they're allowed to prescribe, or else they are denied payment out of OUR premiums. And somehow every ailment has "pre-existing conditions" -- hey, birth is a pre-existing condition. We don't need health care reform -- we need health care!

It is reported today (aug

It is reported today (aug 16) that Obama is caving in on the public option in favor of some more nebulous concept, "non-profit cooperatives". These "non-profit" cooperatives will end up conducting themselves as just another legion in the health insurance cartel. Email the White House, tell Obama that he should only sign a health insurance bill which serves the people, not the health insurance cartel. He also needs to be reminded that the most elementary of actuarial principles dictates that single-payer should be adopted.

I wish all these stinking

I wish all these stinking swine who hoot and holler down the Nation's grassroots meetings on health care, would take a few minutes and read this. Then they could explain to me how America's current methods are better.

"The insurance companies are

"The insurance companies are in pain because of the govt run programs." Anonymous (18:12) is either a mindless dupe of republican fear-mongering, or a shill for "healthcare" profiteers. Ask Wendell Potter, the former Cigna exec-turned-whistleblower how painful it was to eat off gold-rimmed china on the Corinthian leather seats of his corporate jet. Potter's revelations of the health insurance racket should be blasted on mainstream radio, TV and front pages, as a reality check.

Please read and contact your

Please read and contact your representatives and take other action for single payer legislation. See this release from healthcarenow.org (http://www.healthcare-now.org/a-month-of-single-payer-action/): For the first time ever, single-payer legislation will be debated and voted on by Congress in September. The day after thousands of grassroots activists rallied in Washinton, DC for national healthcare on Medicare’s 44th birthday, Rep. Anthony Weiner (NY-9) introduced an amendment to President Obama’s healthcare reform bill (HR 3200) to replace it with HR 676, the single-payer bill, and Speaker Pelosi pledged to bring it to a debate and vote on the full House floor in September. Let’s make August the Month of Single-Payer and demand that our Representatives vote YES on Rep. Weiner’s amendment, and demand that our Senators vote YES on S 703, in September! Join our campaign to pass single-payer, HR 676 and S 703. Tell your Representatives that the Obama health plan is NOT enough and we want them to vote YES on single-payer. We need real health reform that will cover every American, provide real choice of doctors, and save the majority of Americans money. If you know your Rep, call 866-338-1015 for the Capital Switchboard, if not find their information here. You can easily email them here. Here’s a full list of other ways you can help win single-payer healthcare this September.

There are currently about

There are currently about 3300 insurance lobbyists fighting this and 536 congressmen, that's SIX lobbyists per congressmen....hmm who do you think is going to get their way. Bottom line is money & greed. All the focus healthcare reform is getting is another diversion so that banks can continue to steal from us & we don't pay attention since we are focus on the town hall blow ups. It's another shell game. Keep you eyes on ALL the balls.

It's BS to think Obama

It's BS to think Obama doesn't bear responsibility for this mess -- that his only job is to sign or veto a bill. Even before he was elected, he put lots of pressure on Congress to pass the TARP bill that bailed out Wall Street and the bankers but did nothing to help Main Street. He came into office with a mandate and a lot of political capital to spend. And he's spending it on behalf of the health insurance companies and Big Pharma. Perhaps his book should have been called "The Audacity of Betrayal."

As a surgical tech who has

As a surgical tech who has worked in America's best medical facilities that provide care for presidents and enlisted services members alike. I have also spent many thousands of hours assisting in surgery in private, charitable and public hospitals. I have also worked for the industry as a surgical equipment rep. The very best care you can get is not the most expensive. The best is where the people who take care of you are treated well and respected for their service. In the Navy Medical corps our mission was to save lives. We did it to the best of our ability because we cared for the patients and each other. We depend on that bond to keep the country free from enemies both foreign and domestic. In this case socialized single payer health care is what you get in the Navy it is the same care the president and every congressmen, senator, seaman and cook gets. It is what makes us a national defense. The best medicine might be a tough pill to swallow. But after you gt past the treatment you'll be glad and kick your self for not getting treated sooner. America's leadership needs to treat all Americans with the same health care they enjoy. This is a basic human right that could be our only required proof of national unity,

This is all so

This is all so mind-boggling. Apparently those who oppose a single-payer system have the money to pay outrageous amounts to an "insurance" company AND the deductible, or have the cash to pay for medical care outright. So, why should the single-payer system threaten them? They can buy any doctor they want. And anybody who thinks the current system is okie-dokie needs to go see a doctor and get there medication reduced. Then again, we can't have true health care in this country until we get rid of the corrupt officials and the people buying them. One more thing, we wouldn't have a lot of these health problems if the food "industry"(there's that nasty word again) actually put out healthy products, instead of crap to addict the public and using the cheapest ingredients to improve their bottom line(high fructose corn syrup comes to mind). One must remember that most corporations don't care about you, only your money.

Reading about the US health

Reading about the US health care debacle reminds me of why I migrated to Australia

There have been many times

There have been many times when I have been dismayed by US policies and twice when I have been deeply ashamed of my country and the impression we give to the world. One was the aftermath of hurricane Katrina and now the appalling spectacle of masses of the uninsured seeking medical and dental care and the tantrums being thrown by hysterical, ignorant and fearful mobs stirred up by the right-wing special interests. They should all hang their heads in shame.

Thank God I'm no longer

Thank God I'm no longer there!!!!!

Health care for every single

Health care for every single person must be our goal. When wellness and preventive medicine become our normal approach the benefits will be enormous for all of us and costs will reduce. All of the proposed tinkering can be likened to fixing a leaking ship that will continue to spring more leaks daily from the health insurance trolls with their for-profit axes. It is incredible that we have not yet learned from the examples of many successful single payer government run single payer plans in the world, or even from our own medicare or VA systems in our own country. Will we have to go through another decade of painful and bankrupting medical and pharmaceutical chaos to learn our lesson? Too sad to contemplate.

Why is it that these

Why is it that these troglodytes that go to town hall meeting get all the media attention and their way? Remember before the 2 unnecessary wars and unnecessary tax cuts when we saw these massive protests against the war from regular people, the government still got their way. How about immigration reform there were at least 10x more protests and what for? This is a facist state where corporations control the government that's the way its going to stay. 3rd party won't work until we eliminate private campaign financing and instill a public finance for all campaigns.

Why can't we simply allow

Why can't we simply allow the uninsured to "buy into" Medicare? The infrastructure already exists, and wouldn't have to be built up from scratch. A reasonable premium could be agreed upon, and government subsidies could be provided for those who genuinely can't afford the cost. It could be a trial run for an eventual single payer system.

Obama never had the

Obama never had the intention of a public option. That was just a sacrificial pawn. He never had the votes. Blue dog Republican..er..Democrats would not go for it. The plan was always to get something better than what we have for a first step, and keep chipping away at it. Now, Republicans are pulling out the stops to make sure nothing gets done, and embarrass Obama out of office. Looks like they are succeeding. I foresee no bill in Oct, Nov, or any other time passing. Obama can't control the Senate and House.

I work as a paramedic in

I work as a paramedic in Toronto Canada. I visit the U.S. regularly as my wife is American. While the present health care system we have in Canada also has problems, the biggest problem we have is the fact it is slowly becoming more like the U.S. model with encroaching privatization. Time and time I hear American's who think that Canadians are dying in line ups waiting for certain procedures. The reality is that the system here is still functional and Canadians are enjoying better health care over all without all the anxiety of wondering if they will be devastated financially with huge health care bills. Canadians need to demand that our government deal with the cracks in our system without opening the door for big pharma and insurance companies to ruin people's lives. While I can appreciate the concerns many Americans have around "socialized medicine" when you think of it, isn't insurance a sort of socialist ideology as well, where the risk is shared? The only difference is who provides the insurance, private insurance companies, or government? Truly I'm thankful that, in Canada, it's the government. At present it's clearly the better option. Wouldn't it be great if an independent body could determine what would be best for Americans rather than what is best for the wealthy and for corporate power.

Comments criticizing Obama

Comments criticizing Obama for breaking his campaign promises only serve to underline the naivete of the US electorate. Healthcare reform is front burner for Obama. It was an important component of his election campaign. Now in office the reality of the political landscape comes into play. For meaningful reform to be implemented with a public option he must have the support of the Congress and the Senate, That means compromise, give and take. Those who are now taking up the cudgel to bash him for backing down should instead be making their voices heard to support him. Where are the voices of the 50 million who have no insurance and the millions more who are underinsured? Democrats in government cannot do it alone. All those who recognize the deplorable state of US healthcare should demand change, not whine and whimper that Obama is caving in. Ask not what Obama can do for you, ask what you can do for Obama.

The failure of Heath Care

The failure of Heath Care Reform is clearly link to illiteracy . People need to read more , and have critical thinking . To start with this new topic I would suggest to watch Michael Moore documentary Sicko . Thanks.

There are no free clinics in

There are no free clinics in my area. There is one clinic 45 minutes away. But it does not do much beyond having doctors and dentists available for consultation and providing cheaper lab and dental work. It charges according to income. If you need more demanding treatment you are out of luck. As for being treated in an emergency room, that's not free either. It's quite expensive. And unless you are an illegal alien and can't be found, the hospital will come after you for payment. One more thing: I watched a town hall meeting in Mississippi this morning and when a woman talked about those who cannot afford health care--particularly those who lost their jobs--she was booed. Goes to show the Bible Belt Christians can be just as mean and nasty as the rest of America.

We're working on the wrong

We're working on the wrong problem. The problem is that running a campaign costs so much that all the candidates are bought by special interest groups. To prevent this we must lower the cost of campaigning- by either banning TV campaigning, or giving it away free. We, as citizens, own, through the FCC, the airways and we should be demanding that all candidates get equal time on free TV, or none at all. If any candidate tries to , or actually buys TV time, equal time must be GIVEN to all the other candidates for the same position. I have said this before, and I have proposed it to all the candidates whom I have met personally, and they all agree, but NOTHING IS BEING DONE. If candidates didn't need all the money that TV Channels are making on our airwaves, they wouldn't need to accept large donations from special interests. The radio and TV channels belong tp the people, the networks are merely licensed by the FCC. Restrict the licenses, and solve the fundamental problem. Then legislation would be for the people and not the special interest groups.
