Why the Gang of Six Is Deciding Health Care for Three Hundred Million of Us

Last night, the so-called "gang of six" -- three Republican and three Democratic senators on the Senate Finance Committee -- met by conference call and, according to Senator Max Baucus, the committee's chair, reaffirmed their commitment "toward a bipartisan health-care reform bill" (read: less coverage and no public insurance option). The Washington Post reports that the senators shared tales from their home states, where some have been besieged by protesters angry about a potential government takeover of the nation's health care system.

It's come down to these six senators. The House has reported a bill as has another Senate committee, but all eyes are fixed on Senate Finance -- and on these three Dems and three Republicans, in particular. But who, exactly, anointed these six to decide the fate of the nation's health care?

I don't get it. Of the three Republicans in the gang, the senior senator is Charles Grassley. In recent weeks Grassley has refused to debunk the rumor that the House's health-care bill will spawn "death panels," empowered to decide whether the sick and old get to live or die. At an Iowa town meeting last Tuesday Grassley called the President and Speaker Nancy Pelosi "intellectually dishonest" for claiming the opposite. On Thursday Grassley told the Washington Post that Congress should scale back its efforts to overhaul health care in the wake of intense anger at town hall meetings. But -- wait -- the anger is largely about distortions such as the "death panels" that Grassley refuses to debunk.

This week on Fox News Grassley termed the House bill "the Pelosi Bill," and called it "a government takeover of heath care, exploding the deficit because it's not paid for and it's got high taxes in it."

I really don't get it. We have a Democratic president in the White House. Democrats control sixty votes in the Senate, enough to overcome a filibuster. It is possible to pass health care legislation through the Senate with 51 votes (that's what George W. Bush did with his tax cut plan). Democrats control the House. The Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, is a tough lady. She has said there will be no health care reform bill without a public option.

So why does the fate of health care rest in Grassley's hands?

It's not even as if the gang represents America. The three Dems on the gang are from Montana, New Mexico, and North Dakota -- states that together account for just over 1 percent of Americans. The three Republicans are from Maine, Wyoming, and Iowa, which together account for 1.6 percent of the American population.

So, I repeat: Why has it come down to these six? Who anointed them? Apparently, the White House. At least that's what I'm repeatedly being told by sources both on the Hill and in the Administration. "The Finance Committee is where the action is. They'll tee-up the final bill," says someone who should know.

Next time Obama can run on

Next time Obama can run on the Bipartisan Bystanders ticket. I'll be looking for a Democrat or and independent with principles. Sorry, Hillary. I made a big mistake.

'So, I repeat: Why has it

'So, I repeat: Why has it come down to these six? Who anointed them? Apparently, the White House. At least that's what I'm repeatedly being told by sources both on the Hill and in the Administration. "The Finance Committee is where the action is. They'll tee-up the final bill," says someone who should know.' In other words, this is exactly how Obama wants things to play out. This whole public option thing has been a facade, a deception of the highest magnitude. We have a RIGHT WING CONSERVATIVE PRESIDENT. Get used to it United Statesers.

I agree with Mr. Reich. How

I agree with Mr. Reich. How in the world did these six people, representatives of such an astonishingly small proportion of our nation, end up in such a profound position of power with respect to health care reform? How can these six people "hammer out" a bill that is reflective of the will of this nation, when clearly they DO NOT represent the vast majority of Americans, nor do they have any intention of representing us. I am tired of being outraged. I am tired of feeling disempowered. The 8 years of Bush were bad enough. But now, having to stand by and watch the willing abdication of power to people who have no right to be calling the shots on an issue as profoundly imperative as Universal Health Care, I feel as though I've been punched in the gut. Can anyone out there honestly make sense of this?

It has been so long since we

It has been so long since we have been represented by our lawmakers on the hill. Why would we believe it would begin now? To lay down the venom and debunk rumors so real discussion can take place would be too honest. For the republicans to remove the fear so it can be debated as it should would be too realistic let alone fair. Death panels indeed, rationing will begin when? When insurance companies have been established? Did we forget this is occurring now? Rationing is being told you have spent too much on this policy or that you cannot have a new liver due to your age. This is happening now, we are attempting to stop this with the new policy. We can keep our doctors, our healthcare we have but God forbid us to help the people who have none--- a public option is for those who cannot get insurance from their employment or cannot afford what is offered as it is now. Living wills are to be feared as euthanasia because we have rabid opposition being paid by lobbyists called insurance and pharma. People, please use the sense GOd gave you all and make the moral decision to call you reps, "Pass this bill with Public Option, pass it now."

More evidence how

More evidence how ineffectual "representative government" can be at actually representing people. Too few with too much power, arbitrarily deciinge based on whatever the limits of their capacity to see the whole picture. And the thing is, that which gets set into momentum tends to want to continue its momentum. So big banks want to stay big banks, and big car companies want to stay big, and big insurance industries and doctors and medical technology investments and big drug industries all want to stay big, too. Not because it's good for the people, but because nobody likes the idea of losing anything for themselves. Losing feels like failure, while success is seen at only gaining. Well, maybe we should expand "gain" to sincerely include the well being of all people. I'm not sure the voting populous nor their representatives are overall that inclusive of the good of the whole in deciding who among us they're going to protect and defend and advantage over everyone else. But I'm for that kind of expansion, that kind of gain for all, that kind of profit that profits the well being of the whole so that each individual recognizes and appreciates the part they play in that striving for profit.

Democrats may control 60% of

Democrats may control 60% of the House, but they do not control 100% of the Democrats. Funny thing, I can recall Republicans being disparaged by Democrats for towing the party line. Now the shoe's on the other foot, all of the Democrats are supposed to be good foot soldiers.

What I do not get is health

What I do not get is health care insurance and reform is about people and their lives. All the words of many politicians and pundits are about dollars and what is vote-worthy; forget the people whose health care insurance is too little to be helpful, of those with no insurance for many reasons and those trying desperately to hang on. It seems nothing has changed; it is business as usual. The people be dammed. I live on social security which will show no increase for 2010 income while everything else is just about over the top in cost. What in the name of God has happened to this country? People like Mr. Grassley do not know it but they are making the myths reality with their attitudes of I don't give a hoot about the people except on Election Day. I have seen too much tragedy in this country that should not be. At least in the days of the wild west people showed some concern for their neighbor. That attitude blew away on the heels of excessive profits laced with technology making invisible the face of the common man, woman and child, regardless of age. Folks, it's time to stop to take a stiff look at what has and continues to happen to our country and the people. Stop now, not tomorrow.

Open letter to the

Open letter to the democratic party: You won the presidential election, you have majorities in both houses of congress, you have 75% of the citizens of America on your side. Now act like it.

President Obama and his

President Obama and his coterie suffer from a debilitating delusion called "bipartisanship." The problem is, there's no "bi" there. At the rate he's waffling, his entire program will go down the Republican drain. Which is precisely where that obnoxious minority wants it. This is NOT why he was elected. Did he leave his smarts on the campaign trail? He needs to wake up and (1) call the Republican bluff; (2) reach out to the American people and warn them that they're being fed a continental-sized load of hogwash; and (3) shake up the Dem leadership in Congress -- they need to quit playing footsey with the likes of Grassley.

Good article that deserves

Good article that deserves wide circulation. When I have met with our local and state representatives I am surprised to see that they are frequently lacking in basic info of the issues. The same with newspaper editors/writers (not all are good truth-seeking journalists); they get their information from the same right-wing sources--- Fox/Murdoch, Moon, Corporate-Controlled Media (CCM), etc.. So I have decided to forward these articles electronically and make copies to drop off or mail to the offices of the elected officials and hopefully the staff and maybe even the elected officials will read some reasoned truthful articles from credible sources (Robert Reich, Paul Krugman, etc). Also supply info to the newspapers, it could not be any worse than the current situation of fear and lies that prohibit reasoned discussions. It is time to act on behalf of the public not the already wealthy/powerful special interests.

Send $$$ to their

Send $$$ to their challengers! Even if they (as many representatives do) say that they prefer to respond (be responsive) to comments/calls/e-mails from their constituents only, let these 6 know that you can/will still send money to their challengers when they are up for reelection. In theory, I think that representatives probably don't even have enough time to respond to their own constituents. But, if these folks can hold up the whole country, then people from all over the country can hold them up too!

Seems to me Cheney is still

Seems to me Cheney is still pulling the puppet strings and manipulating his gangsters. Rove is still writing the script of lies, sleaze and propaganda. Time they were sidelined boldly and decisively.

The Corporatecans and the

The Corporatecans and the Corporatecrats have snookered the American people again. When are we going to learn that we have to start a third party and let these phonies beat each other up on the professional wrestling circuit? If we back these guys no matter what, then we do have a problem.

Obama needs to stop scaring

Obama needs to stop scaring all the people who voted for him and show some backbone. Lay off talking about health care and the economy, rebutting (and repeating) "death panel" distortions, health care cooperatives, health care and everythingother than what is needed. Health care reform is about delivering what a recent poll indicated was 70% of the public wanting a "public option" as part of any health care reform. Obama campaigned on a "public option" as being better than Hillary's "single-payer" system. Setting up a "public option" will mean millions of people getting medical care who don't have any health insurance; millions of people getting medical care when insurance company functionaries refuse to pay for procedures that doctors say are needed; millions of people losing health care insurance after losing their jobs; millions of elderly citizens in a limbo of uncertainty about whether they will be able to "afford" compassionate medical attention at the end of their lives. Obama is losing political credibility as he vaccilates and double-talks and goes off to Martha's Vineyard for a chic vacation. Ironically, there is a hurricane reportedly developing off the Atlantic Coast this week that could be both literal and figurative for him and his entourage. To date, he's looking like a leaf blown in the winds of big business-as-usual.

During the Presidential

During the Presidential election, I was puzzled as to why Obama got so many contributions from Wall Street. I'm no longer puzzled, and will actively campaign against any Senator or Representative or President who votes for or signs a bill without a public option.

Abolish the Senate Now!

Abolish the Senate Now! Maybe this will be the catalyst to get rid of this utterly corrupt legislative body. An ol' boys club if there ever was one. It takes millions to get elected to the Senate and nearly all of senators are wealthy individuals. It's our House of Lords and it's time is over. These guys (they are mostly old white GUYs) don't live in the real America. We should move toward a parliamentary system. The corruption is too obvious for the entire world to see. I agree with all of the above: nothing has changed! When will Obama get tough? He's too cozy with Wall Street who control Big Insurance and Big Pharma. We need to send him that message.

Universal Health Care=

Universal Health Care= Mandatory Health Care= Eugenics. via Swine Flu Vaccinations. (I hope I'm wrong)

From NM, I can tell you,

From NM, I can tell you, LEAST ONE OUT OF THREE people are on Medicaid. Add everyone aged on Medicare. Our representative is untruthful. He, his fam, & his co-workers 'reps' & staff all get 1payer. It would be good if this were funded by all for the benefit OF ALL, instead of the rationing.

Bipartisanism is a

Bipartisanism is a distraction for doing nothing and blaming the other party for it. There is no excuse for democrats with majority in both houses. The Republican with their majority passed all the laws which gave them and their cronies billions and billions of dollars even destroying the environment, impoverishing the people and making the rich richer and more powerful. Congre$$ doesn’t care about the people. Representation does not exist. It is another faith believes. Far from reality. Give the democrats a Bill to give more leverage/benefits to the drug/health insurance industry and it will pass in a blink. No discussion, no negotiation, no reconciliation. There got to be an alternative to Congre$$. It's not working. Maybe a National Assembly elected by the people and not by "money".

Apparently the Obama

Apparently the Obama administration is as loony as the right-wing people who think that healthcare reform means killing old people. Even the conservatives he keeps trying to "work" with state publicly their sole goal is to make him fail, yet he continues to help them in that task, somehow deluded into thinking that if he just gives in enough, they will magically become reasonable people. What is that definition of insanity again? Oh yeah, doing the same thing over and over when it never works.

$$$ VS HUMANS...get it right

$$$ VS HUMANS...get it right America! this should not be about $$$, it should be about humanity; human lives, human suffering, human quality of life: DIGNITY! bipartisan IS just distraction! its all a show to control and funnel agenda and profit. THERE ARE NO REAL EXCUSES why SINGLE PAYER and UNIVERSAL HEALTH CARE FOR ALL cannot be implemented except that PROFIT minded CORRUPT human beings won't allow it to happen. WAKE UP everyone, use your mind AND your heart AND your POWER as the REAL WE THE PEOPLE of this nation before its too late!!!!

As many Greens say, The

As many Greens say, The Democratic party is where good ideas go to die.

Have to agree with a

Have to agree with a previous post. The republicans want to do away with Obama, and he's loading the gun for them.

Congress should simply pass

Congress should simply pass the National Health Insurance Act, H.R. 676. Let the Gang of Six admit who they're really there for. The health insurance industry. It's fascist corporate take-over at its finest.
