Secret Camps and Guillotines? Groups Make Birthers Look Sane

Washington - Is the federal government building secret camps to lock up people who criticize President Barack Obama?

Will it truck off young people to camps to brainwash them into liking Obama's agenda? Are government officials planning to replicate the French Revolution's Reign of Terror, using the guillotine to silence their domestic enemies?

No. The charges, of course, are not true.

However, the accusations are out there, a series of fantastic claims fed by paranoia about the government. They're spread and sometimes cross-pollinated via the Internet. They feed a fringe subset of the anger at the government percolating through the country, one that ignites passion, but also helps Obama's allies to discount broader anger at the president's agenda.

In one, retired FBI agent Ted Gunderson says the government has prepared 1,000 camps for its own citizens. He also says the government has stored 30,000 guillotines to murder its critics, and has stashed 500,000 caskets in Georgia and Montana for the remains.

Why guillotines? "Because," he wrote in a report obtained by the Southern Poverty Law Center, which tracks hate groups, "beheading is the most efficient means of harvesting body parts."

In a second warning, the Web site Worldnetdaily.com says that the government is considering Nazi-like concentration camps for dissidents.

Jerome Corsi, the author of "The Obama Nation," an anti-Obama book, says that a proposal in Congress "appears designed to create the type of detention center that those concerned about use of the military in domestic affairs fear could be used as concentration camps for political dissidents, such as occurred in Nazi Germany."

Another Web site, Americanfreepress.net, says the proposal "would create a Guantanamo-style setting after martial law is declared."

There's no evidence of such a plan.

In truth, Rep. Alcee Hastings, D-Fla., has proposed a bill that would order the Homeland Security Department to prepare national emergency centers - to provide temporary housing and medical facilities in national emergencies such as hurricanes. The bill also would allow the centers to be used to train first responders, and for "other appropriate needs, as determined by the Secretary of Homeland Security."

In another ominous warning, a group called the Oathkeepers boasts that it wouldn't cooperate if the government orders dissidents locked up.

"We will NOT obey any order to force American citizens into any form of detention camps under any pretext," the group says in its list of top principles.

Oathkeepers is built around the idea that its members - active and retired military, police and firefighters - all have taken an oath to defend the Constitution, not the federal government.

Whether inspired by the group or not, the message of loyalty to the Constitution has been heard in many of the angry protests in town hall meetings this summer against a proposed health care overhaul - often side by side with the suggestion that the health care proposal is unconstitutional.

U.S. Rep. Michele Bachmann, R-Minn., also is worried about the federal government and children, saying a bill expanding the AmeriCorps volunteer service could lead to mandatory camps for young people.

"There is a very strong chance that we will see that young people will be put into mandatory service," Bachmann told a Minnesota radio station.

"And the real concern is that there are provisions for what I would call re-education camps for young people, where young people have to go and get trained in a philosophy that the government puts forward and then they have to go to work in some of these politically correct forums."

Screwball Nation. Freedom of

Screwball Nation. Freedom of speech, okay, but this is above ridiculous. Treason is what it is, and the FBI-nut should be put away in one of the existing concentration camps he put many years of government service into filling.

To simply state "these

To simply state "these things are not true" is hardly enough to dissuade belief. Especially when there is so much evidence to support the ideas.

Wake up people. The time to fight for freedom is now.

Extremist fascist propaganda

Extremist fascist propaganda aims ultimately at eliminating President Obama. Sooner or later the current surge of hatred toward the President, whipped up to lynch frenzy by Obama's enemies, will produce an individual or a group of self-styled patriots who will consider it their patriotic duty to rid America of the President. Pray the universe has other plans! Pete Edler, Stockholm

Following is a KBR PR

Following is a KBR PR release. They are not building camps they are not going to use. Under current provisions of the PATRIOT ACT, U.S. citizens that are deemed "terrorists" can be held indefinitely without any legal representation. It's all out there in government publications. Read it, folks. Check out NORTHCOM as well. It's not all tin hat stuff as this silly article claims. ARLINGTON – Jan. 24, 2006 - KBR announced today that its Government and Infrastructure division has been awarded an Indefinite Delivery/Indefinite Quantity (IDIQ) contract to support the Department of Homeland Security’s (DHS) U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities in the event of an emergency. KBR is the engineering and construction subsidiary of Halliburton (NYSE:HAL). With a maximum total value of $385 million over a five-year term, consisting of a one-year based period and four one-year options, the competitively awarded contract will be executed by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Worth District. KBR held the previous ICE contract from 2000 through 2005. The contract, which is effective immediately, provides for establishing temporary detention and processing capabilities to augment existing ICE Detention and Removal Operations (DRO) Program facilities in the event of an emergency influx of immigrants into the U.S., or to support the rapid development of new programs. The contingency support contract provides for planning and, if required, initiation of specific engineering, construction and logistics support tasks to establish, operate and maintain one or more expansion facilities. The contract may also provide migrant detention support to other U.S. Government organizations in the event of an immigration emergency, as well as the development of a plan to react to a national emergency, such as a natural disaster. In the event of a natural disaster, the contractor could be tasked with providing housing for ICE personnel performing law enforcement functions in support of relief efforts. ICE was established in March 2003 as the largest investigative arm of the Department of Homeland Security. ICE is comprised of four integrated divisions that form a 21st century law enforcement agency with broad responsibilities for a number of key homeland security priorities. These groups said the same

These groups said the same about Bush. They're caught up in this cult mentality and sadly the GOP has latched onto it now that their favorite constituents--evangelics--have mostly been sitting on their hands following 8 yrs of Repubs and still gay marriage, still have abortion and still didn't get to see the Second Coming even with a war in Iraq.

The levels of lunacy are

The levels of lunacy are truly startling. How did the USA manage to breed such a depth and breadth of ignorance to harvest such a lot? Its true, you reap what you sow, and the nation has planted many a rotten seed indeed. Are these loons projecting what they would do were they to have the power? Are they planting so much confusion in the hope that no one will know who did what when fascism bares its full fangs in the USA? is it a case of the kettle calling the pot sooted?

This is comical. I thought

This is comical. I thought it was the right wingers who were setting up the camps, etc. If there IS a plan to lock us (dissenters) up, it would have no party line. Many (other than Mr. Thomma) believe we're already more than half totalitarian under a run amok leadership. It's not the clowns in Waqshington we have to fear; but whoever is pulling THEIR strings. It is right wing insanity to blame Obama for American totalitarianism; he is just a visible cog; part of the machinery.

The fringes of the

The fringes of the right-wingers are so disparate that they will say and do almost anything to create confusion, panic and opposition to sanity. I wish Congress pass a law that states those who slander or purposefully spread false rumors that aims at creating panic or confusion shall be challenged by public prosecutors around the nation in courts of law. Try a couple of these lunatics in public view and then let the open, rational, intelligent debate on issues begin. The average Joe and Jane has been abused against their own interest for the past 8 years. It is high time to get on with the real issue: Is the US able to survive following the extremist agendas of the fringe right (Limbahhhh and Oh, REALLY)?

Guess that's what happens

Guess that's what happens when the schools stop educating people and start "teaching to the test". We now have to deal with with great masses of people who are uneducated, ignorant, unable to think for themselves, and as easy to lead as sheep. As such they are dangerously paranoid and prone to violence.

as i said before and i will

as i said before and i will keep repeating this. when barrack obama was elected president. the sick twisted republithugs went totally insane. so everything that comes out of their mouths is the ravings of insanity

Can I get a guillotine? I'd

Can I get a guillotine? I'd like to build a death camp in an empty lot in my back yard and then apply for some government grant to maintain it and pay salaries to some people who I will hire to build the buildings and maintain the lawns. Can one of those people give me some advise as to where I can obtain the funding? Hey, thanks!

It is both projection and

It is both projection and reverse Orwellian argumentation -- turning the reason for many government policies inside-out to make the government look evil. Worse, the Obama administration has let stand a number of truly evil Bush era policies that are now being used by the Right to prove their points against Obama. The current president had better take a hard stand for the rule of law, soon, or he will be hoist by his own bi-partisan petard.

The really funny thing about

The really funny thing about this whole weird buzz from the right wingnuts is that they are very familiar with this sort of idea. The first Bush administration was the one that started developing these "camps". Bush deux continued the purchase and construction of strange detention sites (built by Haliburton) around the country. They could well have all sorts of strange torture and assassination equipment. Now the wingnuts are scared that they will be the ones to wind up there, rather than non Christians and/or minorities.

Unfortunately, there is

Unfortunately, there is truth to some of this. The Bush administration paid $385 million to Halliburton to build prison camps for holding illegal immigrants. See: http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,198456,00.html It looked suspicious then. Let's hope President Obama cancels this contract.

President Obama and the

President Obama and the thinking few of this nation must learn that it is not wise to play footsie with people in hob-nailed boots. Crushed toes do not give you a good base from which to direct the traffic of truth and false. Snar

Monica Goodling, the video

Monica Goodling, the video footage of Ted Haggart and kids in bible compounds is all anyone need recall to get a window view of where this crap manifests if that doesn`t do look at the CSPAN archives from 2000- 2006! The inmates have been running the asylum and after 30 years rationality again has the upper hand and actually the President is being very shrewd letting them "get it out of their system"and at the same time show voters their true colors representing themselves rather than constituents who at the mid term need to get rid of these obstructionist fools on the hill Enzi, Bacaus,McConnell, Boehner, DeMint,Kyl etc. and get back to the all for one one for all agenda that made WE THE PEOPLE OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA the shining star which the rest of the world looked upon with admiration

The Bush administration and

The Bush administration and the Republican Senator from South Carolina DID pass such a law and gave the NO BID contract to Halliburton/KBR for 385 + million dolars. Surprise Surprise. The Bush Administration and Republican Senator, Congresss etc. stated that the expansion and building of new prison facilities were for the expansion of present prisoners and "any other government dissidents". The Obama adminsistration would do well to cancel this contract (as it was a no bid gift to KBR by Cheney and Bush) and represents a Fascist policy developed by the Republicans.

The far right likes to

The far right likes to accuse others of the crimes they wish to commit themselves. So I take these accusations as confessions of desire.

Another distraction by the

Another distraction by the far-right dissemblers. I wish someone would pick up the real story. Immigrant detention camps all over America. People die in them. People are detained indefinitely. They are built and run by huge corporations getting fatter by the minute from government contracts. Whole families exist in them. In '07 these tent cities and camps had barbed wire around them. The staff is untrained in inmate management or anything else. They have told children that if they run and play or cry they will be taken from their parents. The infamous T. Don Hutto detention center near Austin "houses" immigrants, many of the them children," in cells. The N.Y. Times reported that Hutto "drew protests when it was reported that immigrant children were inadequately fed, deprive of toys and confined to cells with open toilets." The ACLU sued and some minor changes were made. The New Yorker carried a story over a year ago, but it has fallen off anyone's screen since. Google Tent City Rayondville, Rio Grand Guardian website, Texas Prison Bid'ness, Hutto contract update, and Reactions to Hutto Settlement. Pregnant women do not get care. Women have been raped in these places. There are four detention centers near where I live, and others all over the states. The right-wingers don't always get it wrong, just their FACTS mixed up.

I would not doubt that there

I would not doubt that there are 1,000 re-education camps, but they were likely built during the Bush administration. That would explain where the insane, babbling right wingers were brainwashed to work against their own good. Maybe there is hope after all-maybe they can be re-programed!

It's unfortunate that these

It's unfortunate that these discussions always seem to turn to a left wing/right wing debate. The way I see it, they are two sides of the same coin. They both have a thirst for power which means they will always suck up to the big banks and multinational corporations. Who looses that battle? The American people.

If there's money to be made in building prison camps, you better believe that both sides of the aisle will give in and let it happen. That's how they ensure the campaign contributions for the next election cycle.

This is why we need public

This is why we need public campaign financing, to end the influence of lobbyists and special interests. Then we can have a public health care option, and the right wing and other extremists can get the mental health care they so desperately need. Also, if personal use of marijuana was legalized, the current level of prisons would be more than adequate.
