"The Dream" Remains a Vision

    On August 28, 1963, during the March on Washington for Jobs and Freedom, the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. stood on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial and delivered one of the most famous speeches in world history, "I Have A Dream." What has troubled me over the years is how Dr. King, the visionary, prophet, and revolutionary's vision, action, and ultimate sacrifice have been hijacked, compromised, and relegated to being those of just a dreamer.

    Dreamers are safe. People are comfortable with dreamers. Why? To be a dreamer you must be in a restful state, usually asleep. Dreamers are comfortable in that sleep state. Dreamers are docile, easy to manipulate, and non-threatening. To cast Dr. King in the light of a dreamer allows people to be convinced that action resulting from clear vision is not necessary. It allows the oppressed to be fooled into being patient and non-revolutionary; yours will come by-and-by.

    We hear those powerful words "I Have a Dream ..." What many fail to realize is that Dr. King was no dreamer. He was a visionary, not some abstract thinker or philosopher. He was a prophet and a true revolutionary.

    As I understand it, the original title of the "I Have A Dream" speech was "Normalcy - Never Again." If that is the case, that title, "Normalcy - Never Again" is a real indicator of what was to come. It's a clear statement that what had been accepted - what had been normal, i.e. oppression in America - would no longer be tolerated.

    Dr. King the realist states, "... we must face the tragic fact that the Negro is still languishing in the corners of American society and finds himself an exile in his own land ..." That was no dream; that was the Negro's reality in 1963 and a clear indictment of the social conditions in America at that time. It continues to be the reality for too many in America today. A reality for those children languishing in inner-city schools, their parents who are losing their jobs and losing their homes, and those unjustly incarcerated in American jails and prisons.

    Dr. King the strict constructionist referred to the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence as a promissory note to which every American was to fall heir. He stated, "It is obvious today that America has defaulted on this promissory note insofar as her citizens of color are concerned ... America has given the Negro people a bad check - a check which has come back marked insufficient funds." Again, no dream in that statement, that's a clear indictment of the human condition!

    Dr. King the prophet offered hope by saying, "But we refuse to believe that the bank of justice is bankrupt. We refuse to believe that there are insufficient funds in the great vaults of opportunity of this nation." He said this because he clearly understood the power of hope, and as a minister he clearly understood the power of faith.

    Before Dr. King talks about the dream, he says that we must march ahead. "We cannot turn back.... We can never be satisfied as long as the Negro is the victim of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality." In light of the November 25, 2006, murder of Sean Bell, the March 16, 2000, murder of Patrick Dorismond, the February 4, 1999, murder of Amadou Diallo and many others, African Americans still find themselves victims of the unspeakable horrors of police brutality, racial profiling, and Driving While, and some times Walking While Black.

    The "dream" reference actually comes towards the end of the speech. As Dr. King was close to ending his nine-minute delivery he said, "... so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow, I still have a dream." It's important to understand that he spoke of the dream in the context of the horrific reality for "Negros" and the poor that he had just articulated. What makes the "Dream" significant is its juxtaposition against America's reality, failures, and oppression of its own citizens; their nightmare!

    Today, many see President Obama's historic accomplishment as evidence of the fulfillment of Dr. King's dream, a "post-racial" America. This is in fact evidence that America has made progress on the long and difficult road towards racial tolerance and acceptance. However, there are still many miles left to travel.

    As long as African American men are incarcerated at a rate of more than six times the rate of white men, and the incarceration of black women continues to grow at record numbers, the "Dream" will remain a vision. As long as unemployment among African Americans is more than twice the rate of white Americans, and as long as studies show that a black family's income is a little more than half that of a similar white family's income, the "Dream" will remain a vision. As long as African Americans continue to deal with Driving While Black, excessive high school dropout rates, and imbalances in health care, the "Dream" will remain a vision.

    Until every American's reality reflects the very founding principals of this great nation:

    We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights, that among these are life, liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

    The "Dream" for too many in America will remain a vision.

As long as the GOP has even a tiny fraction of madness running amok in the halls of congress, there will be no dream for most of the American people and the world at large. The Republican Party has become one of the most evil political party in the entire world. We know they can shout at town halls, the question is, when are they going to burn books!

After having lived and

After having lived and worked in the Deep South, I came to realize that Northerners don't have a clue. Racism is alive and well all over the country, but it still feels like the 1930's in parts of the South. Wilmington, NC is a place where the Head of the English Department hides the fact that more than 30% of the minority students are flunking out of the gateway English courses because their home language is not Academic English, and then, she refuses to allow the establishment of a remedial program to teach those very same students code-switching in order for them to be able to succeed in English and proceed to succeed in college. the same program has turned failure into success in California. Ask LAUSD's Noma LeMoine.

We voted for change, now we see that Obama has sold out already to the corporate establishment. As for the dream, it is awaiting a new Malcolm.

What we need is more EVOLUTIONARIES: people who are willing to work for slow, progressive change. People who don't give up when they don't get everything they want all at once. People who are willing to attack difficult problems rationally and analytically. People who aren't trying to overthrow the system, but rather want to modify and improve the system to correct the systems failings. You know... grown ups.

When are the Republicans

When are the Republicans going to burn books, you ask. I've had difficulty for years finding books I wanted to read in the library. They selectively buy the ones they want and claim budget shortages for the rest. But I recall when Ashcroft ordered the burning of books. There were five books, two of them books of federal laws, the common denominator being information on the legal process for recovering your confiscated property if it was unjustly seized. Every library in the nation excepting law libraries was ordered to destroy those books. I think it is evident that they were planning one method of control, confiscation of property, homes, cars, etc. of those who might object to the imperial presidency.

Ah, yes! The DREAM! Let's

Ah, yes! The DREAM! Let's blame Obama and the poor for being dreamers, for wanting equality, for not being willing to PURSUE the DREAM. Let's build Holocaust museums, so we "never forget," and then refuse to remember and pay up the billions in interest owed to Native Americans for the mismanagement and outright thievery of trust funds owed to them for the millions and millions of acres stolen from them. While rich dreamers sit on their ranches in Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, South Dakota (lands no one would dare take as a part of Manifest Destiny) let them not forget how they got their lands and their wealth. Pursuit of the dream indeed!

A Holocaust museum has not

A Holocaust museum has not been built in my town, nor is such a museum planned. But what in the world does the building of Holocaust museums or teaching about the Holocaust have to do with Dr. King's vision? What does remembering the Holocaust have to do with the reality of African Americans? Let me put it differently: If no Holocaust museums were built and if curriculums entirely ignored the Holocaust, would African Americans have better lives?

I'm going out on a limb and

I'm going out on a limb and guessing here that Dr. Leon is comparing the state of blacks in America today to teaching kids about the Holocaust when something similarly horrific is going on in America. The Land of Opportunity isn't for all. It is a fact that racism is alive and operating in plain sight all over America today. In the past it was quieter - at least where I live. Now with a black president the ugly truth comes out for all to see. We've read the stories and stats on the poverty levels in black neighborhoods and the numbers of blacks who are imprisoned daily. Affirmative action has done little to promote jobs and education for minorities other than to throw a bread crumb at the problem. We've allowed illegal immigrants into this country in droves, and that can only compound the plight of poor black families. Money spent for Holocaust museums would be better used in helping in providing college and jobs for America's oppressed, as would cutting back on the war budgets.

Good posting Eilish, except that the reason the illegal immigrants are competing with the blacks in America is that NAFTA, which the U.S. imposed, has exacerbated poverty in Mexico. Please, lets not pit blacks, immigrants and Holocaust remembrance against each other! These are all causes that progressives should support.

If Obama were to Go All Malcolm, he would be dead inside 3 months . . . I know, I know; it's not a good enough reason NOT to try to do all that Malcolm would've. Every day I grow closer to giving up; I wanted to believe that Obama would take a less confrontational approach, achieve Malcolm's goals quietly, while America was off watching "Survivor". Every day I believe a little less in the less-confrontational approach. RIGHT NOW, all it seems to do is let Rahm and Blue Dogs roll over him, while Republican Wall St. Banksters roll over the rest of us. Yet, I have a son and I can't despair . . . not yet . . . not quite yet.
