Eight Years Ago

    Bring 'em on.
    - George W. Bush

Does anyone even remember the first eight months of the George W. Bush administration? It was an unmitigated train wreck. One of the last nails in our current economic coffin got hammered in when he gave away the Clinton surplus to his one-percenter buddies with a massive tax cut we couldn't afford and they didn't need. Chinese fighters swatted some of our airmen out of the sky, and George made sure they had Bibles. He laid siege to the separation between church and state with a dead-on-arrival faith-based initiative. The main article in Newsweek on September 10, 2001, was all about how the Bush v. Gore decision, and in fact his entire presidency, was a farce and a sham. Eight months in, and he had "one-termer" written all over his pinched, confused face.

    And then.

It was eight years ago when four commercial airplanes penetrated the most formidable electronic and military defenses in the history of the world, despite a presidential memo warning of exactly such an occurrence, and delivered George W. Bush to his glory. The attacks of September 11 were the best thing to ever happen to the man, a truth he and his minions reinforced at every opportunity. There is no context in our history for the manner in which he used those attacks, and the fear they inspired, against the American people to gain control of the national agenda. Dick Cheney became president that day, and used 9/11 to wreak havoc on our constitutional system of government. For Cheney, it was payback; they chased his first boss, Nixon, out of the city with their rules and laws, so he tore it all up to try and ensure such a thing could never happen again.

Afghanistan started eight years ago today, as did Iraq. Bush stood before the American people on live television and told us about 26,000 liters of anthrax, 38,000 liters of botulinum toxin, 500 tons of sarin, mustard and VX gas, 30,000 munitions to deliver the stuff, mobile biological weapons labs, uranium from Niger for use in a robust nuclear weapons program ("noo-clee-urr," not "nook-yuh-lurr," by the way; he never once got it right), mushroom clouds, doom, fear, and all the rest of that tremendous, deadly lie. Thousands upon thousands upon thousands upon thousands of American soldiers and Iraqi civilians were torn to pieces because of those lies, but he got away with telling them, thanks to the best day of his life: Tuesday, September 11, 2001, eight years ago today.

A French newspaper declared "We Are All Americans" on September 12, but it was all downhill after that. By the first week of October, with a pall of poison smoke still hanging over New York City, Bush declared that, "We have to counteract the shockwave of the evildoer by having individual rate cuts accelerated and by thinking about tax rebates," and the world threw up into its collective mouth. He took us to war; he took us to Hell, and we are still far, far from anything resembling recovery.

For the crimes committed under his administration, George W. Bush should have been impeached. Period, end of file. They should have locked him in jail and thrown away the jail, but they didn't, because the greatest crime he committed isn't technically against the law. Nowhere on the books is any rule, codicil, edict or law that says it is illegal to destroy the rule of law itself. His crimes were too big for the law, so surpassingly damaging that his very presence paralyzed the Constitution itself. He should have been prosecuted for lying America into war, for spying on everyone, for bypassing the FISA court, for robbing the Treasury, for torture, for murder, but he wasn't, and the political cowardice that allowed him to escape into private life is the last, worst stain left in his wake.

September 11, 2001, is a Rorschach test for every American now; it means something different to anyone and everyone confronted by it. Some see American flags and the conquest of Muslim infidels. Some see wars and rumors of wars. Some see money to be made. Most, however, see only fear and flight, and the end of something we didn't know we had. Mr. Bush saw opportunity, and made the most of it, and we are all less than we were because of it.

Eight years later, we are still covered in smoke, ash and tears.

And many thought the Dems

And many thought the Dems would restore us - but only now realize that corporations control both parties. Progressives must leave the Democratic party and start supporting the Green Party- read their platform and you will agree.

Sad really, that people

Sad really, that people still go along, defending Bush, trying to justify the war in Iraq and escalating the war in Afghanistan. We get the politicians that we deserve most of the time, and unless society as a whole is willing to hold up its leaders to a higher standard of integrity, Bush is what you are going to get.

A little walk down memory

A little walk down memory lane, published by Truthout on Saturday 30 October 2004: Lucky George - What Ashley Doesn't Know By Jack MacMillan t r u t h o u t | Perspective "George Bush forfeited this election when he openly declared the war, the recession, and the deaths on 9/11 to be his lucky trifecta, joking on fourteen occasions about the good fortune those tragedies had brought to him and his wealthy supporters." Unfortunately for America and the world, although he forfeited his right to be elected, he still managed to steal his second election.

Here! Here!

Here! Here!

"the greatest crime he

"the greatest crime he committed isn't technically against the law" YES! That is exactly right, but his crimes started in November of 2000, when he and his minions stole the Presidency, another crime so big nobody ever thought of making illegal. There is no Hell hot enough for those bastards.

Read some compelling

Read some compelling scientific arguments about what really happened on 9/11 at 911physics.com I believe that Bush, Cheney and the other criminals in his administration were behind the attacks.

Has No One yet named the

Has No One yet named the Disease that turns the Obvious Truth, into a Lie in the eyes & skull of a republican?

It is time to appoint a

It is time to appoint a non-partisan commission composed of the best brains in criminology, engineering, international power struggle, forensics, and other relevant sciences to unmask the truth behind 9/11. We must find out how our uncountable $trillion defence system was foiled by a bunch of cave dwellers who had the skill of a monkey when it came to flying large planes. Who financed the operation. What happened to the evidence from the scene of crime? What was the chain of command? What information transpired and what orders were given? If 15 of the "hijackers were Arabs, why was Afghanistan invaded? Etc. etc.

Just wait until, IF, the

Just wait until, IF, the truth about the real 9-11 inside Bush/Cheney job is ever brought to light - then we might understand the veritable breakdown of law perpetrated by these prime ministers of death! Wil Tibby

This is one of the finest

This is one of the finest columns I've ever read, and that's saying a lot considering the plethora of great columns to be found on TruthOut. I love you Mr. Pitt...and I don't mean Brad...

anon 1:23 hit the mark

anon 1:23 hit the mark "corporations control both parties."...this was a great article, but if we are judging right and wrong, and not left vs. right, where is Obama's list of charges? He said he was against the Patriot act, then re-authorized it. He said he was against FISA, then supported it. He said he was a president of Change, and we are pumping more and more troops, money, bombs into Afghanistan...thankfully he is pulling out of Iraq, but replacing the troops with Mercenaries! HE is using 9/11. Bush did start this mess and needs to be held accountable, but so should those who follow in his footsteps...in this day and age, we cannot afford to look left vs right, but we need to look at right vs wrong.

This day brings thoughts of

This day brings thoughts of hate. How about something that brings us together: http://americaspeaksink.com/2009/09/poetry-lets-talk-about-it-10/

Awesome article, as always

Awesome article, as always William, but let's not forget the invasions of Iraq and Afganistan were planned (if not before) on DAY ONE of the GW Bush admin. They have admitted it. And Cheney's secret energy meeting in spring 2001 were all about carving up Iraqi oilfields. Along with helping Enron rape Californians on their energy bills. Remember too, the "carpet of gold or a carpet of bombs" quote regarding the Unicol pipeline deal with the Taliban on spring/summer of 2001. There was to be war in Afghanistan in Oct with or without the "new Pearl Harbor..." that the Project For A New American Century called for and almost all the signatories to it were in office ready to roll. Also, on this yet another anniversary let's not forget how the FBI admitted during the Mousari trial that there were no cell phone calls from planes that day. This country (and the world) will never heal and no economic recovery will ever work until there is a real independent investigation into everything surrounding Sept 11.

The Democratic party should

The Democratic party should keep its progressives and stay united as the republicans continue to fragment and disintegrate. The worst possible thing would be for progressives to splinter their own party. The process of change may be slower than we like, but with a unified front, we stand our best chance of steadily accelerating the process. Make no mistake that our President is on our side, but he is a pragmatist and a pragmatist is exactly what it takes in this political climate. Everyone please take a look at the new book out by Max Blumenthal, Republican Gomorrah: Inside the Movement that Shattered the party... We are up against a dwindling but increasingly dangerous and deceptive political machine and to disarm it we must first understand it. Our President needs our steady support and best thoughts, energies, and prayers.

We need to run as many

We need to run as many Progressive/Green candidates as we can find. In Syracuse, New York,Howie Hawkins has run and lost 14 times on the Green ticket. When questioned, he says that's an activist doesn't give up. He's also one smart guy with good ideas.

I am no Bush supporter. I

I am no Bush supporter. I think he is, along with Regan, the worst thing that ever happened to his country. Still, the proper pronunciation of nuclear is, indeed, "nu-cle-ur" (the way it's spelled) and not "nuk-yu-lur." The latter was a mispronunciation that President Eisenhower started, back in the fifties, because he could not say "nuclear" correctly. It was taken over by a few lazy news anchormen, and has now almost driven out the correct pronunciation.

Look at the bright side-

Look at the bright side- apparently, if you have access to Saudi bribe money, you too can get away with a 9-11. For example, Omar al Bayoumi and Osama Basnan were but two of the Saudis who were stateside and openly aiding and abetting the 9-11 hijackers. And, they openly and brazenly admitted it, after the fact! Just to show you the power of the Big Bribe- they just got to go home when they felt like it! Quite a while after 9-11! So, how did they do it? Although the names and facts above can be authenticated by searching any site you want, including the governments, my conjecture about the Big Bribe won't be mentioned. But how else could they have gotten away with it? Isn't it wonderful to have the best government money can buy?

I am with you Raymond; I

I am with you Raymond; I think bush and cheney were behind 9-11 as well. There are too many anomalies to be ignored that day. Cheney was in his bunker conducting a military exercise similar to what was actually happening. Why did Norad fail? Why was the 9-11 scene not declared a crime scene? And the buildings themselves coming down when only the top 20 or so floors had burned. Some heard explosions and the buildings then collapsed in a neat heap like a demolition job would do. And building 7 was never hit, why did it collapse? And, yes if bush/cheney had not had this disaster their presidency would have been the disaster. Look at how powerful they became invoking fear every time anyone questioned.

May justice (somehow) be

May justice (somehow) be done. May we Americans some day have justice for what the George W. Bush administration did with 9/11/2001, which is far worse than what happened then. May we hold those responsible for 9/11 and it's aftermath fully accountable under the rule of law.

"the greatest crime he

"the greatest crime he committed isn't technically against the law" YES! That is exactly right, but his crimes started in November of 2000, when he and his minions stole the Presidency, another crime so big nobody ever thought of making illegal. There is no Hell hot enough for those bastards.

We shouldn't be thinking of

We shouldn't be thinking of how they pulled this off, but what are their plans for the future.

Thank you for saying it

Thank you for saying it clearly and succinctly. Yes, we are living in a nation that has been robbed and raped. Robbed of our treasure, our sense of community, and our feeling that somehow there is respect for our laws as the foundation for our institutions and our social lives. The damage is deep and extensive and the voices calling for accountability and, as importantly, reconstruction do not have the political capital necessary at this time to bring the issues to the center of our political lives. Our country is bankrupt, our financial system suspect, our system of laws unbalanced and our moral compass demagnetized. We will recover in time but will never be the same country again, and many of us will never have the same positive imagination of future possibility again. Yes, 8 years on the damage of the Bush presidency and the handling of 9/11 (whatever its real causes and implimentation - for of course even this is suspect and has never been thoroughly and convincingly investigated) haunts us and will continue to do so for many years.

Brilliant. The simple truth

Brilliant. The simple truth in a nutshell. Thanks, again. As for progressives abandoning the Dems, there's probably still no way in the U.S. to get control with a third party, so it's probably best to retake the Democratic Party and restore it to what it is supposed to be. I don't know if it can be done, or if anything that makes simple, obvious sense can ever be done again in this country. Perhaps by allowing Bush/Cheney et al to run things for eight years, we were effectively hammering the last nails in the coffin of our republic. What is a country besides its people? And this country seems determined to do the worst by the majority of its people -- see health care and the INSANE so-called debate -- and reward only the greedy 'haves.' Unfortunately, the short-sightedness of this approach will mean our grandchildren will suffer the effects in every way. Too bad we're all about individual rights no matter how they impinge on the individual rights of others, and scarcely about community and the greater good.

He most certainly should

He most certainly should have been impeached. Remember how anyone saying so publicly was ignored, belittled, or called a traitor? Contrast that to the attempt to oust Mr. Clinton over his tawdry affair. Contrast that to the hysteria over Mr. Obama's mild corporate centrism. We really have been robbed of our society, and all over a couple of stolen elections and a few hundred violent fanatics. Think of all the crises our country survived, then weep for the way we've let it all get away.

Heaven forbid that Truthout

Heaven forbid that Truthout would actually run an article by David Ray Griffin or Micheal Ruppert of Peter Dale Scott or Richard Gage on this 8th anniversary of the American coup!

Brilliant. We all knew Bush

Brilliant. We all knew Bush was a disaster the day he stole his way into office. His presidency was DOA until 9/11 rendered him Commander in Chief and allowed him to compound the disaster. Pitt has it right: Bush should have been impeached and thrown in jail. Cheney, Rummy, too! Liars, thieves and criminals, all of them.

Great article!!

Great article!!

A remarkable recap.

A remarkable recap. However, there is a claim about a Sept 10, 2001 Newsweek article that "was all about how the Bush v. Gore decision, and in fact his entire presidency, was a farce and a sham." I have conducted a websearch for this article, even searched the Newsweek archives, and can find no such article. If someone could document the URL (perhaps, or better, the author?) that would strenghten the piece. Help?

PItt merely summarizes my

PItt merely summarizes my view on the whole "bush thing", minus the fact a number of very good kids I've known, and friends of my son, have died, or been irreparably damaged, because of the insanity and crimes we as a nation allowed in the fervor to "get even" for a tragedy we likely could have avoided, if not for the total failures of the Bush/Cheney imperial intent.

Not looked at images of

Not looked at images of Sept. 11, still - and harder to avoid. I break my silence once a year: people are still sick/ill and dying and no help. Carolyn Maloney has good legislation, but I remember she voted for authorization for "W" Bush to invade Iraq. (I wrote her pre-vote, in house, that if she voted "YES", I'd never vote for her for anything, if I had her on a ballot, and same to H. Clinton, who voted "YES".) As someone said, those of us in NYC (and wherever the smoke floated beyond Manhattan), we INHALED some of the people who went up in smoke...and I was smelling it a few miles away...We learned that Manhattan is an island...spouse had to walk from another borough to home as all subways closed...cell phones didn't work, altho my spouse, a teacher then at a Man. Community college, 4 blocks from the WTC, was in another borough, teaching and couldn't get to class in Man.- later, 3 weeks later when the school opened (probably not cleaned enough) again, a student said she'd been talking on the phone with her aunt and cousin when the line went dead...They were working in the WTC, clerks. Never found any parts...I had made art to commemorate the dead, sent one for the student, who gave it to her grandmother. I hadn't known the mother of the aunt and cousin (the aunt's daughter) was still alive. A friend's doorman's sister was working for BC/BS, a clerk there since high school graduation - was in an office at WTC on Sept. 11th, 2001 - no body every found.........The event is more than a Rudy G. political moment, or a Bloomberg mayoral election moment, for New Yorkers. I was opposed to invading Afghanistan before we went in, said so publicly and repeat that it was a bad idea. Sept. 11th has not changed the US, only the excuse to do more of the bad old stuff....from invasions of privacy, locking up people, and invasions of other countries, etc.

We should analyze the

We should analyze the results of Bush’s presidency. It was a bad presidency for the country but exceptionally good for the superrich. One wonders if Bush wasn’t a puppet. The media, the Supreme Court, the Congre$$ and other institutions seemed to have an advanced plan for him. It seems that he had to be seated as president at any cost. The Democrats never contested the β€œselection process”. Everything happened with so much celerity and precision that one wonders if he could have done it with his limited managerial capacity and limitations. Eight years of permanent and well organized flow of money and resources and foreign assets to the richest. Bush did not have the capacity to mastermind such complex and effective plan. Every single trick was used to give trillion of money to the superrich. The riches have become so incompetent that their corporations generate neither incomes nor employment. They need people’s tax money to maintain their royal living style. And they found a good technique of making obscene profits.

Corporate news misrepresents

Corporate news misrepresents just about everything, so they are not going to tell us what actually happened on 09/11/01. Everyone with their ear to the ground knew the day it all happened that Cheney was involved, if not the mastermind of the tragedy. I knew it in my bones, it was my first thought, and when those building came down like so many demolitions I'd seen on film it sealed the conviction in my mind. I do not believe we should abandon the Democrats, but I do believe we should embrace the Greens. The Republicans are dying and we need the next 2 party system to be Green/Democrat. This would bring out the best in the Democrats because they would see that they should quit trying to compete with Republicans for votes, but instead they must compete with Greens. Embrace the Green party in your area. My experience is that they are much more approachable, and less elitist than the Dems, at least in Tennessee. Love to you all on this sad anniversary.

Osama bin Laden should have

Osama bin Laden should have been pursued based on his criminal acts just as Timothy McVeigh (Oklahoma City bombing) was captured and punished. No need for illegal senseless wars in Iraq and Afghanistan that served as a cover to steal their oil and allow pipelines for the big oil companies. We have more to fear from domestic "terrorists"/extremists than the cave-dwelling "terrorists" (criminals) thousand of miles away. Even now, divert a massive number of troops into the Afghan/Pakistan hills and get Osama and then remove all troops from the Mideast.

HEAR! HEAR! (NOT: Here!

HEAR! HEAR! (NOT: Here! Here!)

How many of us cringe,

How many of us cringe, wince, choke - every time we read one of these thoughtful commentaries on 911, wherein the charade of external perpetrators is yet again perpetuated? All this carrying on about how the administration opportunistically played the circumstances - yet no mention of the direct government complicity. And in the context of "Truthout" ... Makes me want to scream, "WAKE UP!!!" "TAKE THE DAMN RED PILL!!!"

I remember well the need to

I remember well the need to make Bush "presidential" and his own characterization of wistfully imagining himself as "dictator." Then his allowance that we were on a "crusade," then his gloating that "noone ever expected a trifecta" indicating the triple threat of economy, attack and what was that other thing when he actually made it sound as if he had won something...he had, the hearts and minds and fears of the American people. Sadly we still suffer from this as evidenced by the gaping hole at ground zero and the yawning abyss of our collective souls.

A relational symmetry has

A relational symmetry has been revealed here: β€œTruthout is to 9/11 as Obama is to Afganistan” ...everyone has their blind spot.

This great article touches

This great article touches on some things that have not be discussed enough. The so called Faith-Based Initiative needs to be undone. I don't want my tax dollars going to support any religion no matter what they say they are spending it on. Now, thanks to the C-street revelations, we know there are plans to build mega churches on military installations using tax payer funds. If that isn't a violation of the First Amendment I don't know what is! Another problem is this so called Clinton Tax Surplus that Bush gave away. The surplus was simply the result of a book keeping change that put Social Security tax funds into the general accounting fund. Now we hear that social security is going broke? No it isn't, it was just robbed blind... Get that money back! Finally, to all you truthers out there... SHUT UP! All your nonsense is distracting people from the real problem. Get some meds, you'll be fine.

OF COURSE Bush was a puppet!

OF COURSE Bush was a puppet! So was Cheney. for that matter, though he was Bush's puppetmaster as well. OF COURSE 911 was an inside job! Articles like this just pacify people enough to keep them quiet, but never get to the real heart of the matter. When will left-leaning mainstream media (of which TruthOut is still a member) realize (or care) that pacification is not what is needed now, what is needed is more radical participation in digging out the real truth as Conspiracy "Theorists" and the "underground" press have been doing all along. The real heroes in media aren't careful to say just enough so they don't get into trouble. They don't give a damn about their respectability, but of course, the mainstream continues to ignore them. The real truth is not pleasant and it makes for unpopularity and more than just ruffled feathers. Will being unionized give Truthout writers more courage to go beyond the veneer of leftist respectability? That's what I am waiting to see...

Do the rich have to spend

Do the rich have to spend more money on building stronger structures to survive a plane hit? Read http://www.ae911truth.org for the latest answer. The truth about 9/11 will be revealed when the current U.S. empire's replacement, with no vested interest in preserving sustaining myths, speaks. But by that time what brought the WTC down may not interest any one. In the intervening years tens of millions will have died violent deaths. There will be other problems to. In the mean time the dingbats will wave flags signaling their pathetic prejudices.

Indeed Cheney used 9/11 as

Indeed Cheney used 9/11 as payback for what happened to Nixon, and Bush was able to declare an interminable war on the word terrorism. I would hope Obama gets a clue and returns our troops from Afghanistan and Iraq as soon as possible. Otherwise, Bush and Cheney's damage to this country is so great that I'm afraid it will take the better part of the next decade to recover economically.

Gavino, Pitt only told half

Gavino, Pitt only told half the story on that September 10 Newsweek article. Magazines are pre-dated allowing last minute changes. The article was anticipated, and I think some even got a chance to pre-read it, but then the whole thing was pre-empted for a spread all about 911. Bottomline: No one will ever see it. It was suppose to cover the NORC report, a definitive report saying Bu$h lost. Google NORC and you'll find some links like this: http://archive.democrats.com/view.cfm?id=4623 but not to the Newsweek article. I think the NORC report itself still exists, but the Newsweek article went down the memory hole, with some conspiracy theorists adding it to the "reasons" for 911. If anyone has any of the Newsweek pre-reads PLEASE POST ONE. I've always wanted to read it.

You want the truth? Or is

You want the truth? Or is the truth boring? 9/11 wack jobs are part of the problem. In fact, they're a bit of a conspiracy themselves: Where did so many trolls appear from - raving insanity about controlled demolition and missing Boeings? Find out who paid for 9/11, keep it simple. No one has any problem believing that Cheney and crew might well be responsible: this activity wouldn't be anything new in a historical context.

Not the time for this

Not the time for this discussion. Set today aside for mourning and remembrance. Discuss the ugly motives behind the aftermath another day.

The attack of September 11,

The attack of September 11, 2001 was only possible with the cooperation of the highest levels of the Government of the United States. The most cursory inventory of the facts available make this irrefutable. Can Americans handle the psychological burden of acknowledging this? In the face of massive propaganda, it seems not.

If you have not already go

If you have not already go to "project censored" website and take a look at the list of the most heavily underreported or actively censored stories of 2008, then do a little of your own research and critical thinking. I had no idea that the Japanese parliament openly discussed the some of the glaring inconsistence s of our governments official story(since 9/11 the japanese have given much logistical support in afpak/iraq, and they are beginning to question the entire basis of it all-9/11) such as the absence of the WTC 7 in the 9/11 commission report, the size of 747 in comparison to the damage at the pentagon, no plane remains being found, FBI seizure of all footage of the "plane" that hit the pentagon..... ..... its not conspiracy theory stuff, its not a bunch of fringe people... its the major governing body of the Japan calmly discussing this. Can you imagine??? here people yell and scream over healthcare and ignore 9/11....

If anyone alive doesn't

If anyone alive doesn't believe that both Bank Towers and building 7 were not brought down by timed explosives, after angled cuts of burning Thermite ate through the steel support beams of those buildings first,....hitting Firemen upon their helmets with molten steel from hundreds of feet up, then Americans are the most STUPID beings on planet EARTH ! The Chemical remains of that burned and chemically altered Steel remain in a Landfill in New York still,....yet nobody has bothered to find the gross evidence of the hundred or so workers who planted those combined charges some 2 to 4 months before 9-11, all from the beck and call of the New Owner of those buildings who walked to the Bank, with billions of dollars of Insurance Money in his pockets and he didn't have to pay for the Asbestos removal either ! Simply follow the MONEY, the source of the Explosives, Det chord and Thermite and you,ll have the murderers and evidence in the BAG ! Then you arrest Bush, Cheney and the rest of the Conspirators, it's actually very simple. ConSpiracy Theorist # 2

*applauds* 9/11 inflicted

*applauds* 9/11 inflicted short-term paralysis, from which we emerged ready to go forth and smash down those who hurt us. 9/12, and every day afterward until Obama was sworn in, has inflicted a paralysis so severe we're only just starting to recover and I have no idea if we ever truly will. 9/11 stole the illusion that America was invulnerable. 9/12 and afterward stole our voices, our confidence, and our freedoms. We cried out to Bush for justice and what we got was gang raped by him and his cronies.

I am willing to let the ACLU

I am willing to let the ACLU and Attorney General Eric Holder and a special prosecutor pursue Bush and Cheney for their unconstitutional activities over eight years in office. I support the struggle for full disclosure and for pressure on President Obama to reveal the harm these men caused this country and to allow them to come to justice. I am appalled by the tone of Pitt's vituperative "remembrance" of 9/11/01 and fervently wish that truthout readers would focus on the present and the future, rather than fulminate about the many wrongs from the past. Truthout conspiracy theorists need to rein in their fever-dreams and focus rationally on NOW. We are in trouble now, and nothing will be resolved by voting Green or doing arcane research on Cheney being behind the destruction of the WTC. What's deeply worrisome is that President Obama continues to be soft on rendition, on maintaining military tribunals, on holding public documents confidential. Most deadly of all, Obama still has us in Iraq, and presently is apparently planning to stay in Afghanistan by increasing the number of our troops there. THIS is the truly disastrous legacy of 9/11 and this is worthy of our attention -- not how squinty W looks or how he mispronounces "nuclear." Furthermore, Obama himself is now the target of demented right-wingnuts -- like the gun-toting town hall attendees -- whose fury is being stoked by lies and distortions from people like Sarah Palin and commentators on talk-radio and Fox television. We need to focus and combat the clear and present dangers of this moment. We need to fight to get the change in direction we were promised, that we voted for, that we deserve.

Dr.M thank you for that

Dr.M thank you for that wonderful comment-A relational symmetry has been revealed here: β€œTruthout is to 9/11 as Obama is to Afganistan” ...everyone has their blind spot.- there is very little discussion in any of the media of the growing body of university accredited engineers, physicists, chemists, architects, etc that have very legit questions, no conspiracy speculation... just the scientific method. thank you Dr. Steven Jones. I'd like to know how the newly unionized staff at Truthout feels about the official story authored by the 9/11 commission and why even the independent media has turned a largely blind eye to the very real debate within academia on this issue. It should be on every front page! We must know the truth! Enough already!

Bush destroyed Reagan's

Bush destroyed Reagan's America....that's probably a good thing. But rebuilding America is a painful expensive arduous project....and it mustn't be rebuilt in the same image.

Hey , give Cheney some

Hey , give Cheney some credit for ruining our way of lief too.

Thank you Mr. Pitt. I've

Thank you Mr. Pitt. I've said many times that perhaps the greatest crime of 9/11 was that it insured a second Bush term.

"Mr. Bush saw opportunity,

"Mr. Bush saw opportunity, and made the most of it, and we are all less than we were because of it." Correction: The Powers behind Bush (and Obama) created opportunity! If you don't know this by now it is because you do not want to know. If you do know this and won't publicly admit it you are complicit in the cover up. Everybody's Gonna Learn Sometime!

I will never forgive Bush

I will never forgive Bush for the way he brushed off the intelligence memo warning of the high likelihood of bin Laden striking in the US by flying planes into skyscrapers. When an aide handed him the memo he said, "There, you covered your ass," and put it down without reading it.

Good editorial, except for

Good editorial, except for one misleading statement which reads: "It was eight years ago when four commercial airplanes penetrated the most formidable electronic and military defenses in the history of the world, despite a presidential memo warning of exactly such an occurrence, and delivered George W. Bush to his glory." Watch this video: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=2296490368603788739#

I watched the replay of the

I watched the replay of the planes on MSNBC yesterday, and there is no way the planes brought those buildings down. The first tower didn't fall for 90 minutes. By then the jet fuel would have been long gone, and the fire have burned itself out...no fuel, no fire. Plus they came down as buildings do in controlled demolitions, and everything was pulverized. Then there is Building 7, where there was a small fire, but it came down exactly the same way, just 10 hours later. What did the planes have to do with that? And this is never raised, but I believe the plane over Pennsylvania was shot down...else why was there no debris? We have all seen the aftermath of a plane crash..it looks nothing like that barren field. So either Bush was in on it, or the terrorists managed to get into three towers and rig explosives throughout.

I think I just got dumber

I think I just got dumber for watching that...

In the face of many warnings

In the face of many warnings before the September 11 attack zero precautions were taken and no plan dealing with the considerable available intelligence was prepared. Nothing. Its not as if we were attacked in spite of the Bush administration's best efforts to keep us safe. Bush no doubt anticipated a repeat of the previous comparatively ineffective WTC attack of the '90's and calculated that such an attack could be used to justify the execution of their preexisting war plan for Iraq, much as earlier the Battle of the Little Bighorn created a justification for launching our genocidal war policy for Native Americans or in the way that the bombing of the USS Maine was created to launch the Spanish American war or the bogus events in the Gulf of Tonkin affair helped sell LBJ's monstrous Vietnam escalation. Get it? Stay tuned.

Wow! You guys are all nuts

Wow! You guys are all nuts

And NY was covered in

And NY was covered in thousands of tonnes of Barium, Strontium and other radionucleides from the nuclear fallout of a Ground Zero which means only one thing. Millions will die of cancer in NY because of Cheney et al. When are you really going to tell the truth truthout? What are the consequences of not? Fiat justitia ruat caelum.

The problem with

The problem with "conspiracy" theories is that they don't stand. There are in fact also websites devoted to debunking them (notably the controlled explosive theory for WTC7). But the main problem is that such a vast & precise conspiracy would have to involve many competent and loyal actors, and be executed flawlessly. Basically impossible to pull it off. I don't doubt the neocons fantasies one second. I just argue that it is completely implausible that they organized all this. Also, quite unnecessary. However the pre-existing project of the invasion of Iraq, and the cynical and immediate exploitation of 9/11 are well-documented facts. Finally, the fact that after stealing 2 elections (I have my own pet conspiracies...) they finally let go and accepted McCain's defeat has greatly surprised and reassured me (and arguing that Obama is their puppet is quite a stretch, I argue). And to return to Mr Pitt's article; spineless Democrats also share responsibility. After all if President Chirac of France could see clearly, why not us? (About Iraq).

Why is Obama continuing and

Why is Obama continuing and expanding Bush's agenda? Because they both work for the same people. Bad Cop/Good Cop. Thanks for the links, "Charlie Sheen Fan" and all the others who still insist on 9-11 Truth.

You hate conspiracy theories

You hate conspiracy theories so much, eh? Did you ever consider that the story that was pretty much fully outlined in the media by nightfall of the same day the events unfolded was a simplistic, preposterous, but officially sanctioned conspiracy theory? One that, in order to believe it, one had to suspend the laws of physics and overlook the actions of key government figures that were precisely designed to prevent anyone stopping the attacks or learning the truth about what was happening. Why is it necessary to believe that those incompetents in the government had to pull off anything? There is one government with a decided penchent for clandestine operations who profited mightily by getting the sole remaining superpower to make war THEIR enemies. Given the predisposition of this gang to outsource even warfighting, do you think it is possible that collusion occurred between the true homeland of the duel-citizen neocons comprising the staff of the administration and their functionaries in government? All they had to do was sit on their hands, confuse and sabotage any rational reaction, and wait for the promotions most of them got when the dust settled. Party has nothing to do with it. Our government is so deeply compromised, trying to analyze it in terms of political party, as opposed to, say, the CIA and Mossad is like trying to explain the Iraq war without considering oil or war profiteering. Wake the hell up!

I cannot understand how any

I cannot understand how any rational human being can look at video of Building 7 falling straight down in a matter of seconds and still believe the government sanctioned story of what happened on Sept. 11. The collapse of Building 7 is not even MENTIONED in the 9/11 Commission Report. Does that not indicate that there is something very amiss here?

I suppose at least a trickle

I suppose at least a trickle of people realizing the significance of 9/11 is better than none. One would hope that more folks would at least take the time to expose themselves to a sane analysis of the available evidence.

Yea blame it all on the

Yea blame it all on the leadership, the American people really did well there in their full blown support for Bush's action in our desire for retribution. We all need our scapegoat. We put so much wait on the shoulders of our civil servants but we don't put an inch on our own. The least 8 years was not just a Bush mistake it was the mistake of the American people. A mistake that will most likely be repeated.
