The Mess Left Behind

They were careless people, Tom and Daisy - they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness, or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.

    - F. Scott Fitzgerald

Sooner or later, heaving buckets of blame onto George W. Bush for what we as a nation are being forced to endure will become a facile excuse; at some point, the whole kit and caboodle will be the sole property of President Barack Obama, whether he likes it or not and be damned to excuses. Already, his administration has taken enough dramatic measures to ensure that, should something go wrong, a fair share of censure will and rightly should be placed on the present and not the past.

This has been one of those weeks, however, when everything happening bears the scars and stains of the despicable, cowardly and criminally insane actions of the Bush administration. This has been one of those weeks where it seems for all the world as if Bush left a flaming bag of dog poop on the White House porch before fleeing into the night, and President Obama had no choice but to stomp on it and get covered in crud. This has just been one of those weeks.

President Obama spoke before the UN General Assembly on Wednesday after making significant progress in two key areas of foreign policy: he secured concessions from Russia regarding sanctions on Iran and won support from both Moscow and Beijing for a resolution to curb nuclear proliferation. In his address, however, one could not help but notice how forcefully the president emphasized the demonstrable fact that he is not George W. Bush, and that the country he leads is not the same one that had run roughshod over the international community over the last eight years.

"During his address to the General Assembly," reported The New York Times on Thursday, "Mr. Obama sought to present a kinder, gentler America willing to make nice with the world. He suggested that the United States would no longer follow the go-it-alone policies that many United Nations members complained isolated the Bush administration from the organization. 'We have re-engaged the United Nations,' Mr. Obama said, to cheers from world leaders and delegates in the cavernous hall. 'We have paid our bills' - a direct reference to the former administration's practice of withholding some payment due the world body while it pressed for changes there."

The simple fact that an American president had to stand before that world body and apologize, to all intents and purposes, for the last American president is a stinging humiliation for this country, but the sad fact is that it had to be done. Resentments over what Mr. Bush and his minions did during their time continue to fester all over the world, but especially in and due to the two war-torn countries where fighting and dying continue even at this very moment - two countries Mr. Bush tore apart with the greedy opportunism of a spoiled child opening other people's Christmas presents.

A roadside bomb killed a policeman in Mosul, Iraq. Another roadside bomb in Mosul killed three Iraqi soldiers. A 20-year-old American soldier was killed when his Blackhawk helicopter crashed in Balad. Another American soldier, age 22, died of non-hostile wounds on an airbase in Kuwait. Approximately 30,000 families in the Ninevah province in Iraq have been displaced since the US invasion began in 2003, and remain so today. These are the facts from this week alone, and no amount of spin or bluster can counter the simple truth that Mr. Bush owns the blood and sorrow still being spilled into the sand and dust of that nation.

The Washington Post this week blew the lid off a policy rift that has apparently developed between military commanders and the Obama administration over how best to proceed in Afghanistan. Gen. Stanley A. McChrystal, the US and NATO commander in Afghanistan, was quoted in a leaked Pentagon report stating that unless more troops are dispatched to Afghanistan immediately, America risks losing the war within twelve months. The White House, by comparison, has been mulling over actually decreasing the number of US troops there, and focusing on protecting Afghan civilians while making targeted attacks against Taliban and al-Qaeda fighters.

Whatever decision is ultimately reached will become a defining moment for Obama, because whatever he does will be a policy shift from the Bush administration's actions in Afghanistan, and will cement this war as belonging in full to this White House. Even so, the fact remains that this eight-years-and-counting war in Afghanistan would almost certainly be in a far different place had Mr. Bush chosen not to scoop out so many troops from that country and send them to Iraq. Both wars are half-a-loaf failures left behind by Bush that, when combined, make for some rancid bread left on Obama's plate.

There were a number of other issues that came up this week to remind us of the mess Mr. Bush left behind. The apprehension of alleged terrorist plotters in Denver and New York has been riddled with questions about the validity of the investigation, i.e. whether this is for real or if the DoJ is showboating at the expense of someone's rights again, and that sounds all too familiar. Obama's decision to lower the standards for application of the "state secrets" privilege was roundly praised, but came with statements from the ACLU, the CCR and Sen. Russ Feingold (D-Wisconsin) warning the administration not to behave like its predecessor. Even the current debate over health care reform has not escaped the taint of the previous administration, as the people who are deliberately deranging the conversation with nonsense are the very ones brought to prominence on the coattails of Mr. Bush and his crew.

None of this excuses Mr. Obama from his responsibilities, and every day that passes makes the state of things more and more his to keep. This was one of those weeks, though, when the shadow of the last White House occupant lays long, dark and deep across these United States.

The long, dark, deep shadow

The long, dark, deep shadow of the last US Administration that Mr Pitt speaks of so eloquently will take a lot of hard scrubbing to wipe out. Whether or not the citizens of the United States of America are capable of such effort is the question. I see a lot of shareholder types clinging to worn-out habits and luxuries, I see a Congress on the whole unworthy of respect except for the brave few who speak up for integrity, I see corporate greed continuing apace, I see malice and hate being broadcast without restraint over the airwaves and television and in the media, I see continued military and diplomatic power grabs, and I see an economic/financial system totally committed to cheating, bribing, grabbing even from the poor and the sickly. A great silence hovers over churches, synagogues and such. Except for the Labor/Union movement, there is little which tends toward amelioration of the mess we are in. We need to get busy PDQ.

Isn't it the truth that the

Isn't it the truth that the cheney administration's ambition was endless war? While their methods in executing this may be their undoing, they went a long way in achieving their goal. We would certainly be remiss in assuming that they have stopped pressing the dogma of what with any great good wind will be refuted for all time.

Sen. Russ Feingold

Sen. Russ Feingold (D-California) Um Dude.... Russ is from Wisconsin! Otherwise Nice Piece.

Silly - did the American

Silly - did the American people come to blame FDR for the Great Depression even though it lasted throughout his time in office? No, they re-elected him 3 times. Where Obama will deserve to be faulted is for continuing the occupation of Afghanistan and Iraq which is still at its base just to protect a natural gas pipeline and the 3rd largest oil reserve in the world. Millions are dying while Enron and Chevron and Shell reap record profits and of course make record campaign contributions.

The despicable legacy of

The despicable legacy of Bush and his henchman is undeniable. On one hand a political moron and the other insidious, greedy traitors. Somehow, they both had the stones to create the "Patriot Act"and other anti-constitutional atrocities in their facetious "war on terror". More a war on morality, equality and American civil rights than any other entity. The fact that Americans were either 1. to ignorant to discern the pall of evil descending on them or 2. too self-possessed to care speaks volumes about our declining civilization, morally & intellectually. I 'm hopeful that Obama and future politicians of similar ilk will change the terrain for my 13 yr. old son.

I, for one, truly appreciate

I, for one, truly appreciate Mr. Pitt's commentaries. More often than not, I finish reading them and come away with a much more comprehensive view of the subject matter. Thanks!

Bush was not an intelligent

Bush was not an intelligent man, but Obama is an empty suit.

Isn't it obvious that

Isn't it obvious that neither Bush or Obama make independent decisions? All clues lead to the Zionists, and their plan to destroy USA from the inside, while US military depopulates the Muslim world. And, like Netanyahu said, "Once we've squeezed all we can out of the U.S., it can dry up and blow away."

Okay, Cheney-Bush-Rove were

Okay, Cheney-Bush-Rove were bad, but they were (and are) simply bad guys - rogues - whereas the United States is a socio-political construct that acts according to who governs it. For eight years the US was a rogue nation. Just to hint at this now and then, as Mr. Obama is doing, is far from enough. Hundreds of thousands of people have been killed or badly injured, their families devastated, millions driven from their homes - by and through the United States. If President Obama can't own up to this - and there is is absolutely no indication that he can or will - the United States of America will continue to exist in name only while descending deeper and deeper into moral anarchy and chaos. Wish I could see a brighter future! Peter Edler, member Swedish Writers Union, Stockholm

I wish Feingold were the

I wish Feingold were the Senator from California, but unfortunately he is not.

Otherwise, a nice piece,

Otherwise, a nice piece, although I can think of a lot more messes left behind by the Busheviks. And as for the cleaning up, Obama apparently likes some of the new toys he found and plans to keep them. A plague on both their houses.

as much as we in California

as much as we in California would love to have him, Feingold is from Wisconsin, Bill.

President Obama and General

President Obama and General McChrystal aside, what are we doing? We have two armies in the Middle East Field, one military, one mercenary. We are launching more warships of enormous firepower and technological complexity, fighter jets that leap two or three generations ahead of anything else in the sky, roll out more drones and ignore our seriously undermanned force. We are asking kids -- kids -- to serve two and three tours in a six year span. Our Presidents state that these wars are critical, must win situations and yet we demand no sacrifice -- no draft to make service equitable -- no taxes to pay for our war toys. This is insanity.

...and if george bush had

...and if george bush had not gotten a tax cut for the richest when all the money was flowing their way...and pushed through a massive giveaway to the drug companies that forbade the government to negotiate for better drug prices...as any company is free to do in the holy "free market"...the list goes on and on...so that we might have had the deficit under control...so that we might have something left to deal with the economic crisis etc. etc... ...when you are born on third base, believing you just hit a triple, you have no sense of the value of things...and how much work it costs other people to create them. It seems symbolically so American, that a black grownup should have to clean up after a rich white child.

DIGGING YOURSELF OUT OF A

DIGGING YOURSELF OUT OF A HOLE DOESNT MAKE YOU RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING THE HOLE IN THE FIRST PLACE. DURING THIS FIRST TERM, I DONT THINK THAT OBAMA SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR BUSH CAUSED DISASTERS LIKE IRAQ AND THE ECONOMIC DISASTER. HE SHOULD BE RESPONSIBLE FOR WHAT GOES FORWARD IN AFGHANISTAN AND HEALTH CARE AND FURTHER ESCALATION OF THE DEBT

I absolutely love the work

I absolutely love the work of William Rivers Pitt. The flaming dogpoop analogy here was particularly apt. And the Fitzgerald quote was spot-on as well. I don't know why Mr. Pitt's name is not recognized more widely. Of course, I live in Kansas...so I guess that would be expecting a lot...

Agreed! Bring George and the

Agreed! Bring George and the big Dick to justice. End their evil follies. Get OUT of Iraq and Afghanistan, because every day WE stay strengthens the hands of the terrorists. Show the world we know what is rigiht. OUT NOW> NO MORE WAR MONGERING!!!!!

His Very Own Mess is under

His Very Own Mess is under construction, while the focus here is on the remarkable transformation from war hater to war monger, it is in the realm of the banking world that this administration picks up the tempo in continuing the crimes of the past. Those who do not fathom the profundity of thievery that continues daily while we as a nation just sit around like nothing's wrong will be the reason why we transition to a true third world nation economy if the Federal Reserve Bank isn't stopped a.s.a.p. O appointed these same criminals to run the friggin' Treasury. Call your congressman and ask them to support HR 1207 the bill to audit the Federal Reserve Bank before it is too late - it is being debated starting this week...

How absurd to think there is

How absurd to think there is any substantial difference between the corporate-owned, banker-toady Democrats/Republicans.

Years ago, a German general

Years ago, a German general linked toNato, and a recognised expert on nation building estimated that the task at hand in Afghanistan required a force of no less than500,000 troops of mixed skill sets, and that even with such a manpower deployment the possibility of sucess was mixed at the very best. Those resourses don't exist. The US has to change is chip immediately. As Ollie used to say to Stan, "heres another nice mess you've got me into. Of course Stan's character was like Einstein compared to ol' W.

Law Enforcement Against

Law Enforcement Against Prohibition, and many Catholics and Episcopalians in southern California have allied to press for changes in the dramatically harmful drug war. On this measurement, Obama is far ahead of Clinton, on whose watch some of the private-prison constituency developed. Obama may still need to be careful about the prison guards' unions, but he may be less inclined to help Ivy League endowments with their prison investments. Marijuana is reduced in seriousness under the law, and it is no longer such an easy way for vengeful people to plant contraband and get others locked up with their resources confiscated. Maybe there will be some progress on our hideous incarceration rate. Wally Lamb spoke last night about getting writing gigs for women in prison. He named them and read some of their work. It was stunning and moving. He was called in because there had been a spate of suicides. It is Rep. Alan Grayson of FL where I am putting some hope for whistle-blowers. There are still some terribly dangerous burrowed-in agents in the alphabet agencies. Some of them are protected by unlikely suspects among congresspersons, and it is incredibly difficult to deal with them. They protect harm and impoverish us immensely.

While I thoroughly agree

While I thoroughly agree with Mr. Pitt, I think we also need to look at what we, as citizens, allowed to happen in this nation. We were more than the Silent Majority - we were the ABSENT MAJORITY! Now we have a chance to make ourselves heard, and instead, we stay at home, blog at places like this, and let the Becks, Cantors, and others like them incite others to violence with lies and distortions. I am really not anyone important, but I have had enough! So to that end I am going to DC, leaving 10/18/09 and arriving 11/3/09. Please see my website at http://www.letfreedomring.community.officelive.com My itinerary will be posted today, and I am asking all of you to help me accomplish these goals. We are all in this together, and we are far greater in number than the radicals we have seen and heard on TV and in the news. We need to make sure that those who would govern us know it, and that those who are paying them off are aware that we can stop them too if need be. Please help me and in the process, maybe we can change how we are governed and how we as a nation proceed. Thanks.

With regard to the financial

With regard to the financial deficits run up by Reagan, and Bush I and Bush II, I think we need to increase our taxes until the deficits are down to pre-Reagan levels. I propose that we label these tax increases the "George Bush Republican Deficit Reduction Surtax" and leave them in effect until the deficits are gone as an ongoing reminder and symbol of irresponsible and immoral Republican tax policy and how it has effected the U.S. and its economy.

Speaking of "long dark

Speaking of "long dark shadows," permit me to drag the 9/11 incident out into the faint glimmer of the current White House occupant, despite the fact that a preponderance of his associates are former cronies of the Bush/Cheney cabal. We must keep in mind that the "mess" left behind is primarily due to the 9/11 incident. That NeoCon's "New Pearl Harbor" event was the key that unlocked the cages and set the dogs of war on Afghanistan, Iraq and now even Pakistan. Also loosed to wreak havoc on our civil liberties and citizen's rights was the ominously named "Patriot" act, a sorry fascist piece of legislation that remains firmly in place. We need some investigations here, folks. We need some perps hauled in front of some judges and some creeps to do some time here, or we won't have much of a future. Ignoring the truth of 9/11 is to ignore justice for all those who have died as a result of this treasonous act. We cannot afford to do that and remain free.

Obama probably won't

Obama probably won't challenge the reigning theories about capitalism and war and 'terrorism' so I would advise everyone to buy Cigna, Humana and the KBR/Haliburton stocks since they will be , it appears, the only ones to benefit in the coming years. Ordinary people are very unlikely to see any improvement in their declining standards of living.

M. Sinclair, yours is a

M. Sinclair, yours is a fruitful request. We see the usefulness of words that empower the crazies. Thank you for your workable suggestion.

Absent Majority..? How

Absent Majority..? How about NON-EXISTENT MAJORITY..!... There is no WE THE PEOPLE anymore... There is only a significant population of sheepish, chubby shoppers known as THE AMERICAN CONSUMER living in what was once upon a time the Untied States of America. Its a place run by numerous GLOBAL CORPORATIONS that own, operate and exploit everyone and everything there through an agency known as The US Congress of Corporate Facilitation...

OK - out into the streets!

OK - out into the streets! Protest the way Iranians are doing! Get the message across. And remind our DemcraTIC leaders be leaders, get off their fear-ridden butts, work for the country and NOT their own re-elections. End the war. Prosecute George and the big Dick, along with Gonzo, Yoo, Rice, Rumhead and the others who perpetrated the high crimes and misdemeanors that led to the losing war on Iraq, the bankrupting of the country and the loss of US respect around the world. I fit was OK to impeach Clinton for lies (where nobody died), it's OK and desirable to convict a pair whose lies killed hundreds of thousands.

Really good article, glad I

Really good article, glad I stumbled in here. The only complaint I really have with the article is the continuation of this mindset we as a nation have that the country can never apologize without losing face. To admit a mistake, to be able to say, yeah we forgot our ideals for awhile, is not a bad thing. It means we can learn from them and move on. Not that he went this far, but I'm sick to death of this idea that America has to be right even when she's wrong, and if you disagree you must hate the country. We're better than that. Thank god, we're making progress in this regard! Other than that caveat, bravo! Well written and informative, I'll be stopping by again.

meanwhile, Obama is in

meanwhile, Obama is in Denmark Lobbying for the Olympics to be in Chicago while 43 troops have died since McChrystal asked for more troops. This whole article is a big crock a shit people...the blame game leads to "so called" bipartisanship right...NOT. The "shadow" that Bush has cast over Obama is the biggest chance for a president to solidify himself in history by moving towards a better America..."Hope and Change" right? I haven't even seen a flicker!

I see no difference betweent

I see no difference betweent his new ILLUMINATI PUPPET and the LAST ILLUMINATI PUPPET of ISRAEL and the ROTHSCHILDS / BILDERBERGERS. global war, pestillence, famine. profiteering for the CORPORATE ELITE at the cost of We The People everywhere.
