Street Report From the G20

The G20 in Pittsburgh showed us how pitifully fearful our leaders have become.

What no terrorist could do to us, our own leaders did.

Out of fear of the possibility of a terrorist attack, authorities militarize our towns, scare our people away, stop daily life and quash our constitutional rights.

For days, downtown Pittsburgh, home to the G20, was a turned into a militarized, people-free ghost town. Sirens screamed day and night.

Helicopters crisscrossed the skies. Gunboats sat in the rivers. The skies were defended by Air Force jets. Streets were barricaded by huge cement blocks and fencing. Bridges were closed with National Guard across the entrances. Public transportation was stopped downtown. Amtrak train service was suspended for days.

In many areas, there were armed police every 100 feet. Businesses closed. Schools closed. Tens of thousands were unable to work.

Four thousand police were on duty, plus 2,500 National Guard, plus Coast Guard and Air Force and dozens of other security agencies. A thousand volunteers from other police forces were sworn in to help out.

Police were dressed in battle gear, bulky, black ninja-turtle outfits - helmets with clear visors, strapped on body armor, shin guards, big boots, batons and long guns.

In addition to helicopters, the police had hundreds of cars and motorcycles, armored vehicles, monster trucks, small electric go-karts. There were even passenger vans screaming through town so stuffed with heavily armed ninja turtles that the side and rear doors remained open.

No terrorists showed up at the G20.

Since no terrorists showed up, those in charge of the heavily armed security forces chose to deploy their forces around those who were protesting.

Not everyone is delighted that 20 countries control 80 percent of the world's resources. Several thousand of them chose to express their displeasure by protesting.

Unfortunately, the officials in charge thought that it was more important to create a militarized people-free zone around the G20 people than to allow freedom of speech, freedom of assembly or the freedom to protest.

It took a lawsuit by the Center for Constitutional Rights and the ACLU to get any major protest permitted anywhere near downtown Pittsburgh. Even then, the police "forgot" what was permitted and turned people away from areas of town. Hundreds of police also harassed a bus full of people who were giving away free food - repeatedly detaining the bus and searching it and its passengers without warrants.

Then, a group of young people decided that they did not need a permit to express their human and constitutional rights to freedom. They announced they were going to hold their own gathering at a city park and go down the deserted city streets to protest the G20. Maybe 200 of these young people were self-described anarchists, dressed in black, many with bandannas across their faces. The police warned everyone these people were very scary. My cab driver said the anarchist spokesperson looked like Harry Potter in a black hoodie. The anarchists were joined in the park by hundreds of other activists of all ages, ultimately one thousand strong, all insisting on exercising their right to protest.

    This drove the authorities crazy.

Battle dressed ninja turtles showed up at the park and formed a line across one entrance. Helicopters buzzed overhead. Armored vehicles gathered.

The crowd surged out of the park and up a side street yelling, chanting, drumming and holding signs. As they exited the park, everyone passed an ice cream truck that was playing "It's a small world after all." Indeed.

Any remaining doubts about the militarization of the police were dispelled shortly after the crowd left the park. A few blocks away, the police unveiled their latest high tech anti-protester toy. It was mounted on the back of a huge black truck. The Pittsburgh-Gazette described it as Long Range Acoustic Device designed to break up crowds with piercing noise. Similar devices have been used in Fallujah, Mosul and Basra, Iraq. The police backed the truck up, told people not to go any further down the street and then blasted them with piercing noise.

The crowd then moved to other streets. Now, they were being tracked by helicopters. The police repeatedly tried to block them from regrouping, ultimately firing tear gas into the crowd, injuring hundreds, including people in the residential neighborhood where the police decided to confront the marchers. I was treated to some of the tear gas myself and I found the Pittsburgh brand to be spiced with a hint of kielbasa. Fortunately, I was handed some paper towels soaked in apple cider vinegar, which helped fight the tears and cough a bit. Who would have thought?

After the large group broke and ran from the tear gas, smaller groups went into commercial neighborhoods and broke glass at a bank and a couple of other businesses. The police chased and the glass breakers ran. And the police chased and the people ran. For a few hours.

By day, the police were menacing, but at night they lost their cool. Around a park by the University of Pittsburgh, the ninja turtles pushed and shoved and beat and arrested not just protesters, but people passing by. One young woman reported she and her friend had watched "Grey's Anatomy" and were on their way back to their dorm when they were cornered by police. One was bruised by a police baton and her friend was arrested. Police shot tear gas, pepper spray, smoke canisters and rubber bullets. They pushed with big plastic shields and struck with batons.

The biggest march was Friday. Thousands of people from Pittsburgh and other places protested the G20. Since the court had ruled on this march, the police did not confront the marchers. Ninja-turtled police showed up in formation sometimes and the helicopters hovered, but no confrontations occurred.

Again, Friday night, riot-clad police fought with students outside of the University of Pittsburgh. To what end was just as unclear as the night before.

Ultimately about 200 were arrested, mostly in clashes with the police around the University.

The G20 leaders left by helicopter and limousine.

Pittsburgh now belongs again to the people of Pittsburgh. The cement barricades were removed; the fences were taken down; the bridges and roads were opened. The gunboats packed up and left. The police packed away their ninja-turtle outfits and tear gas and rubber bullets. They don't look like military commandos anymore. No more gunboats on the river. No more sirens all the time. No more armored vehicles and ear-splitting machines used in Iraq. On Monday, the businesses will open and kids will have to go back to school. Civil society has returned.

It is now probably even safe to exercise constitutional rights in Pittsburgh once again.

The USA really showed those terrorists didn't we?

This is the "change" that

This is the "change" that Obama promised, I suppose. This is the only story I've read about what happened on the streets of Pittsburgh during the G20 meeting, so there isn't a lot of information to go on, but I'll make assumptions anyway as I present my opinion. The protest sounded peaceful, until the cops decided it wasn't. THEN, apparently, things started to become out of control. I'm not defending what the vandals did. However, the provocation on behalf of the security seems to have started the debacle. I'd be angry too. I'd want to break something, or at least vociferously express myself, at the thought of the unethical and illegal policies of the security forces. I just don't know if I would still find it necessary to bust the glass of a storefront. Hurting a store owner doesn't really stop the police's repression.

Absolutley frightening.

Absolutley frightening.

I believe that your

I believe that your "COMMENTS" advice was sorely needed by Pittsburgh's "Pirate"-acting police, to wit: "Be civil" and "don't threaten or advocate violence." Mommy, is the policeman still my friend?

Huffpost is carrying a video

Huffpost is carrying a video of a young man virtually kidnapped in broad daylight by a group of men in army fatigues using what appears to be a private vehicle. Has anyone investigated this chilling incident yet?

Just one more step to our

Just one more step to our new county name, the USF. United States of Fascism. Or maybe the United Servants of Corpro-fascism. I had hope for Obama but I wonder a lot these days.

Only in Frank Rizzo's

Only in Frank Rizzo's Philly? No, this is your new and improved national security state. Just keep pecking at your iphoen and twit-ing on twitter and BigBrother will smile on you. Newsflash: Google/Amazon announce the destruction of the last physical book in the world.

Why is this different than

Why is this different than what happened in Tehran ?? Perceptions are sometimes more important than actual policy and the USA set a very bad example that gives ample food to the thugs in Iran to contend this kind of behaviour by the police is justified. We had a chance to teach by example... we blew it ! What a shame.

Get used to it there are

Get used to it there are empty prisons waiting for you. One mans terrorist is another's freedom fighter.

Even after this experience

Even after this experience most Pittsburghians will probably shuffle back to their routines: work, the mall and huge helpings of virtual violence served up with their junk food takeaway dinners. It seems nothing can shake the majority of Americans out their state of denial about their their country having become fascist - all the brutal police and military trimmings included. They've been soporific whilst their government set up this horrendous infrastructure to 'combat civil disobedience' -as were the Germans while the Nazis took over their country in the name of God and Freedom. The described scenario in Pittsberg is becoming commonplace and many Americans are still be subscribing to the old adage, "It's for our own good". Eventually they'll 'get' it' and take to the streets, but far too late as the people in Pittsburgh have discovered. They'll be mowed down and imprisoned in bloody droves. The great American experiment with the illusion of Freedom of the Masses' is over. Get used to it.

Don't get mad, file a

Don't get mad, file a lawsuit! The girl that was arrested on the way home from Gray's anatomy needs witnesses, sworn statements, and a lawyer! As does the girl who got struck with a baton. Don't get mad, don't get scared: Sue--its the American way.

Police have mortgages and

Police have mortgages and must do as they are told. Stanley Milgram's research showed that, for psychological comfort, we blame the people we mistreat. Therefore, the policeman is bound into a situation out of economic need, does bad things to strangers and then must blame them for his actions. Freedom? The Bankruptcy Act 2005 nailed the lid on that.

I'm an anarchist who lives

I'm an anarchist who lives in Pittsburgh & I participated in both the unpermitted & permitted marches. Pittsburgh was an occupied city. My place of employment was boarded up with an armed private security force in front of it & snipers on the roof. The Sunday before the G20 happened the cops made a huge show of force by raiding people's homes with small armies with shotguns & automatic weapons. These raids were mostly just psychological warfare & they were mostly aimed against artists & artist's spaces - studios, rehearsal spots, a writer's collective - that sort of thing. Known activists were harassed by having lights shone in their windows. One has to wonder: who on Earth would think having this happen to your city is good?! Only the deranged & power-hungry - a few politicians & rich people who get off on associating with people even richer than themselves. If the G20 wants to come to your town I strongly suggest preventing it!

Where is all the news

Where is all the news coverage? The photos? The video? The tweets? Funny (not so) how our civil protectors are using tactics developed in war.

I am firmly convinced that

I am firmly convinced that we as a nation must replace our government by a new party. This should be done from local, to state, to national level. Such a party would adhere to a doctrine that would end involvement in all foreign wars, end the fortune 50 spending to support war materials, and completely remove the glamor of violence off every TV channel. I feel these are just a few root causes of why such nonsense we read here is allowed to happen. We are a civil society and now any and all citizens are held suspect to any forces the government chooses to apply. There is no chance that this can be overthrown with violent or protesting groups. We simply need to elect representatives that will abolish such terror. Eliminate the seed of this ugly plant rather than try to trim its branches.

Is it beginning to sink in

Is it beginning to sink in who rules the world and for whom governments are mere extensions of their power?

I think it is important to

I think it is important to remember that the police forces of this country did not assemble all the military equipment that they are now using on demonstrators in a variety of cities. I think, I am not positive, that the federal government started giving grants to police departments during Clinton's administration. It took time to assemble all that equipment. Our governments are not reacting out of fear. They want to control, to suppress demonstrations and free speech. They have learned and taken lessons from our modern technical armies.

Don't threaten or advocate

Don't threaten or advocate violence in this "moderated forum" like the police in Pittsburgh did! Thugs. They love it. Takes a special kind of individual to become a cop--gotta love that chance, every once in a while, to beat somebody besides your wife and kids.

All the while I was reading

All the while I was reading this article I thought about the KKK which are our home grown terrorists and have threatened to kill President Obama, and I have no doubt they would kill other leaders of the G20, too. You notice that the groups who had permits to protest the G20 were allowed to do so. I also think the protection forces got a bit too rambunctious according to this article but well....remember John F. Kennedy and Martin Luther King. At least we have a President who is still alive and no other Leader of a Foreign Country has been assassinated on our soil either. Read up on the KKK and the work that has been done by the Southern Poverty Law Center to try and rein them in.

I have been to Pittsburgh

I have been to Pittsburgh several times and the people there do not deserve to be treated like this. I would love to see them kick the G20 out as incompatible with their way of life. If I were a Pittsburgh voter, anyone who was responsible for bringing this fiasco to the city would not get my vote in the next election.

We have seen the enemy and

We have seen the enemy and it is US!

You can see this

You can see this totalitarianism in action on Youtube, keywords "Pittsburg G20." It's pretty obvious what passed for an election and who we assumed was the government are not that at all. The notion that we have a constitution or any say in what the major decisions are is a fallacy. The shots are being called by the big international money, which owes allegiance to no single nation.

The same things happened in

The same things happened in Seattle a decade ago and Miami when union members organized and even rented an amphitheater to hold a peaceful rally to express frustration with global trade policies. You can openly carry weapons to a presidential event but to march in protest of corporate monopoly of our governments is intolerable. Really?! One thing I'd advise the anarchists: lets drop the violence. It only justifies their reactionary police tactics. The general public will be much more sympathetic to peaceful marchers who are persecuted.

Seems with escalating

Seems with escalating security threats against the President as well as other world leaders this "Police state" was, unfortunately, fully justified.

They must be defeated, but

They must be defeated, but to openly confront will only give them the excuse to go full-bore fascist... The trick is to beat them without firing a shot. There will always be people who have been disempowered who willingly pick up the baton, the prison keys, the syringes for lethal injection-- How we beat them is unclear. The media helped end the Vietnam War and break Watergate and Iran-Contra and so on-- Now, the media screams danger danger, and way too many folks buy it-- There Will Be Blood, before peace arrives, far more than has already run red in Iraq and Afghanistan (and Pakistan and the Phillipihnes and Vietnam and Cambodia and for native Americans and on and bloody on-- Refuse. Resist. But don't escalate. Peace--

Sofa czar. Who is the sofa

Sofa czar. Who is the sofa czar? This is not the change we are looking for.

Anyone reading this article

Anyone reading this article and still believing that we live in a Democracy is living in an alternate universe. We are a hair's breathe away from a dictatorship.

I have to wonder what we

I have to wonder what we protester lawyers have accomplished. Over the years the same stuff keeps happening-the police riot, the demolish the constitution, law suits are filed and won, and the lawyers and protesters walk away with some money. Then it begins again seemingly each time with more atrocities by the police and bigger and badder weapons. I appreciate Bill's work and the reporting of these violent acts but I have to wonder--will anything ever change for the better?

How much different does this

How much different does this scene sound from the recent events in Tehran? Perhaps not as deadly, but this is America after all, isn't it? Have our collective memories faded of the thousands of Viet Nam War protesters in Washington DC being rounded up into the stadium when the jails were too full to hold them? Tear gas and batons were wielded by armored police then also. It just goes to prove the old adage that says, "The more things change the more they remain the same." As members of the world community,we are all responsible for the continuation of violence; the only solution is to seriously work to achieve WORLD PEACE NOW.

I suppose the old canard

I suppose the old canard really is true: We get the government we deserve.

Don't Take The Bait - this

Don't Take The Bait - this nation has never been closer to lapsing into full military dictatorship than we are now - we move closer with each day - and all because of some exaggerated threat. Think about it - simultaneously, we have An Enviromental, Financial, Public Health and a Terrorist GLOBAL EMERGENCY. They all have the same thing in common - centralized power and draconian control measures - what an amazing coincidence. Meanwhile, we are distracted by the false Left/Right paradigm - bickering over social issues while we ignore the ominous and growing signs of domination. We saw the face of this in Pittsburg, and while we sit back passively because we finally elected a 'true progressive' the remnants of the free society that we so take for granted are being picked apart like vultures on a big carcass. Posse Comitatus, Habeas Corpus, Freedom of Assembly, Freedom of Speech, the 2nd Amendment - these Constitutional guarantees are all under heavy attack simultaneously - all with the excuse of some Global Emergency. At some point, it becomes either too scary to dissent, or too shameful to admit that we ridiculed or abandoned the 'early aware' who are protesting against these tyrannies - and that is when we are finished. Wake UP. The thing to do RIGHT NOW is call your congressman and demand that they support HR 1207 to audit the Federal Reserve Bank.

I agree with the above

I agree with the above regarding the breaking of store front windows. But, although I have not been there, I have been to many such protests where similar things have occurred, and I can say that the protesters do only target big businesses, banks, etc., esp. those that have a bad reputation. This does not mean its tactically the correct, or an effective thing to do, but it does show that it was not random, wanton type destruction that we often saw with with uprising/rioting of say the Rodney King type riots in LA. I doubt any 'mom/pop" type stores were damaged in this case. I think they see this is part of the class war going on, provoked by the police who are there to protect and defend the rich (and their property). So that property becomes a legitimate target in the minds of a segment of the protesters, I guess. hehe I would like to hear an argument for these types of actions, actually. I'm open minded but think they are more of a venting of frustration than anything really constructive/revolutionary in nature.

Really, this is nothing new.

Really, this is nothing new. This kind of thing happens every time the the Gxx meets - anywhere it meets. The streets are emptied and cordoned off, the police get to show of their most fearsome toys - looking for any reason to use them, and a small group of protesters decide to see how far they can push. It's less frightening than idiotic. I don't know about the other 19 countries in this year's Gxx, but I do know that we have quite a few military installations covering hundreds of square miles. Why don't we use one of these, instead of large American cities? They have a built in security force, and most are off-limits to the general public.

Welcome to USA 2.0

Welcome to USA 2.0

Look what we're missing.

Look what we're missing.

What if we start educating

What if we start educating the "police" and the National Guard people that they are here to protect us, rather than oppress us? Put banners in your yard, talk with those who are friends with the police and national guard people and ask them to discuss protecting us. We need these groups to realize that it is us that need protecting, not protecting those who pay to oppress us. Education is the key! Email the thought - protect us, don't oppress us.

Aww come on, give them a

Aww come on, give them a break....I mean they got all dressed up in ninja gear, have been training (getting brainwashed) for months. They had to flex their powers, other wise it would be like getting all dressed up and no place to go. Pittsburgh coppers and the city just want to pretend they are like the big boys/cities. I agree with Richard W...get used to it. Seeing these images on TV etc just gets us prepared to see more. God bless America....really we need it.

To those who criticize the

To those who criticize the behavior of the masked "anarchists". At the meeting in Quebec a few of those were unmasked by some labor activists and proved to be cops in disguise. Agents provocateurs.

Just because government CAN

Just because government CAN does not mean that they SHOULD. Amazing how all governments work to supress the rights of the people when they feel that they are allowed to do so. What ever happened to the so-called belief in The Constitution and the sworn Oath of Office that so many of these people held their hand up and swore? Depressing. And scary that there are really only the Rights that these people want us to have, only when it is not inconvenient to them.

The same kind of nonsense

The same kind of nonsense occurred at the Republican and Democratic conventions last year. We must continue to express our rights. They are being taken from us again and again.

I saw this same police state

I saw this same police state in St Paul last year when they had the RNC convention. People I met there who were also in Denver for the DNC told similiar stories. Have we become a banana republic? I think yes and the Constitution and the Bill of Rights in particular shrink each day. I get little solace knowing that i voted for Cynthia McKinney. Obama is just a gentler, kinder face, with great oratorical skills. still the same wizards of corporations behind the curtain.

See G.Lakoff for more

See G.Lakoff for more thinking on this subject. We are seeing here, and in Tehran, the protest against what Lakoff calls the "strict father" phenomenon. The strict father is where rule is imbedded in a king rather than in the "rule of law." The protestors want "the rule of law", which comes along with a vote; the "strict father" wants to embody the law and have believers. We can see the parallels in this and religion. Our founders saw this and made a separation between the two. This was supposed to help end the fear of not being "right" but becoming learned.

I was in Pittsburgh, but it

I was in Pittsburgh, but it was so depressing that I decided to leave on Saturday. There was an overpowering sense of fear in the air. When getting a slice of pizza on Friday night the pizza guy told me "to just stay out of the line of fire." "WHAT, THE LINE OF FIRE?", I said. It was that kind of thinking. Pittsburghers are not really the most open to outside peoples to their city, so to top that off with this event, you can see what the end result was.

Hasn't these level of

Hasn't these level of security always been present during these meetings...no matter what country? It's the meeting of leaders from the most wealthy nations on the planet, not the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade.

What if only the

What if only the provacateurs showed up? Would they do theater, like pro wrestling? Would it make sense to have counter-parties, with beans and rice, in as many cities and towns as think it would be safe? Could these parties be called different G-things, like G-transparencies, for real, since they never really say anything about their top secrets anyway? G-remedies? G-comedies as opposed to the G-violence they have become accustomed to? or should we change the G, even. How about the L-billions, for Little People? Just brainstorming here. It's more fun than being depressed or brain- or hearing-damaged from assault.

If you haven't read '1984'

If you haven't read '1984' you ought to. Then realize this was written in 1948. Orwell didn't dream this stuff up, people in the communist party told him of plans to infiltrate and break America up. The four parts were education, religion, science, and politics. Schools are dumbed down, religions are coming 'together' as one. Science is distorted to be used by the corporations for money. Politics? In order to have two parties you must have two different policies, we don't. We are only led to believe have two parties, keeps us thinking we have democracy. It is all the same no matter who is in office. Nothing makes sense anymore and that is by design. It is all 'double speak', And if you are confused or depressed take your anti-depression, or your viagra. Realize this 'redistribution' is among the world, not America. The global banking cartel is splitting up the goods, and soon the physical property. The Army National Guard site is now hiring 'Internment / Relocation Specialist', they need 67,000. If you are hungry there is a job for you. (go to there site if you need to check). When people are hungry they will work for the destroyers. And people are becoming hungry and homeless! It is all by design. How else could all the dots connect from 1948- 1984-2009-.. Why can things pass without elected officials being allowed to even read them? Think for yourself. Check the sites, MAJOR changes were put into place with false flag 9-11 architects and engineers for 911 truth, firefighters for 911 truth.org, pilots for 911 truth. WHEN the majority of the people know truth then we will see change.

God Bless America. Please?

God Bless America. Please? You are our only hope, O' We Be SO Wan. We have no idea how to bless. We pray to turtles.

Why don't they just hold

Why don't they just hold this meeting on a military base thats *already* secured?

Why don't they just hold

Why don't they just hold this meeting on a military base thats *already* secured? -- They want the illusion that they are part of the people that they own.

Watching the ninja-turtles

Watching the ninja-turtles in the streets, as I have personally, a also wonder about the choice of Black. Shades of Star Wars, and for those my age (66) back to the Western Movies where the good guys always wore white and the bad guys wore black. Has the color scheme changed, or are the police now the bad guys?

Well, Roger Bates: It's not

Well, Roger Bates: It's not so much that the police wear black and are the bad guys - most are not, regardless of color choice. It's that they WORK FOR the bad guys and have little choice but to follow orders, color choices notwithstanding. Now, mercenaries like BLACKWATER are pure thugs, stem-to-stern, top-to-bottom, helmet-to-hobnail-boots. It's already too late; when they showed up in New Orleans in 2005 we became the Fascist States of America.
