Shame: The US War Against Unarmed Working Mothers

Is this what our nation has come to? War against unarmed working mothers? Have we no shame?

Dozens of petite young mothers gathered this week in the parking lot outside the US Department of Homeland Security in Gulfport, Mississippi. Each wore a long dress or pants to hide her electronic ankle bracelet. Lift up a pants leg and you can see the black plastic band and monitor, which is the size of a pack of cigarettes. Most wore sandals. Several were obviously pregnant.

From the outside, the building looked like any office park. But a blue Homeland Security flag waved right next to the red white and blue out in front. Inside, the mothers were being interviewed and readied for deportation.

The crime these mothers are charged with? Not guns, not drugs, not spying. Working to put food on the table for their families and not being citizens of the US.

Heavily armed federal agents stormed the Laurel, Mississippi, parts plant where they worked in late August. Helicopters swarmed in an operation ABC News described as "paramilitary." Agents shackled hundreds of workers at the wrist, waist and ankles.

About one hundred women and nearly three hundred men were arrested. Most of the men are in prison. The women are wearing ankle bracelets 24/7.

One of the women has been working in the US for eleven years. She has children 8 and 7 years old. Another has been here two years and has a one-year-old child. One started work at the raided plant three weeks before the arresting immigration agents showed up.

In the Homeland Security office, no guns were visible. Agents were polite as interviews were conducted at several desks in an open office area. Yet, tears dripped down the face of one mother as federal agents questioned her.

These hundred mothers are a tiny fraction of the casualties of the US war on unarmed mothers and fathers.

In 2007, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested 30,408 immigrants, about double the number for 2006.

This 2008 election season finds federal criminal agents more active than ever. A few recent operations will illustrate.

In April 2008, federal agents arrested about 400 immigrants working at chicken plants in Arkansas, Florida, Tennessee, Texas and West Virginia.

In May, US officials rushed eleven restaurants in San Francisco, arresting 63 immigrant workers.

Later in May, 389 immigrants were arrested in Postville, Iowa, for working at a meatpacking plant in what was then the largest workplace raid in US history. Federal agents packing heavy-duty weapons surrounded the plant, while others in helicopters swarmed overhead.

In July, 43 agricultural workers were arrested in Hawaii.

In August, federal officials arrested 59 people working at a parachute plant in North Carolina. Also in August, ICE agents arrested 42 undocumented people working at the Dulles airport.

Later in August, over 350 workers were arrested in a workplace raid in Laurel, Mississippi.

Thus far in September, there has been an increasing number of raids. In early September, federal agents raided a bakery in Palm Springs, arresting 53 workers. Another September raid netted 65 arrests at a candle plant in Arizona. In Chicago, federal agents swooped in by helicopter and arrested 21 people.

In the last week, federal agents raided a house in Hercules, California, arresting 21 undocumented workers, and raided a hotel in Maui, arresting another 21.

The U.S. Catholic Bishops, no leftist group, condemned the raids in September, saying, "The humanitarian costs of these raids are immeasurable and unacceptable in a civilized society."

What the hell is going on? How many working mothers and fathers and children must be sacrificed in this election-year war?

Does the US feel so vulnerable that we really need to declare war on unarmed working mothers and conduct paramilitary raids on bakeries, candle shops and meatpacking plants in order to feel safe?

The militarized war on unarmed immigrant mothers, fathers and children is expected to continue until at least after the November elections. By then, thousands more will be arrested and deported. After the election, the new Congress and the new administration will certainly turn their attention to substantive immigration reform. The high-profile war on unarmed working mothers will likely slow down a little. Mothers, fathers and children will go back to work. The butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker will be back in business and the shame will continue.

They should be arresting the

They should be arresting the employers who illegally hire these people. They're hurting American's wages and standard of living by replacing them with these workers. I know they are only trying to support their families. They should be treated with respect and civility, but America has a right to secure borders and Americans have a right to earn a decent living. Skilled manufacturing and construction workers are sitting at home while illegals who dont need things like health insurance and retirement plans are doing their work. This is not a popular opinion among the affluent middle class, but try raising a family on what many workers earn these days.

All right, so I'm an

All right, so I'm an affluent middle class son of immigrants, and a flaming liberal, and I sympathize, but lines such as this one: "The crime these mothers are charged with? Not guns, not drugs, not spying. Working to put food on the table for their families and not being citizens of the US." merely read *even to me* as nothing other than leftist dogma. Imagine what a conservative would read this and say. Obviously the crime they are charged with isn't "working without being citizens," it's immigrating without authorization from the government. There are immigrants who do have authorization to work in this country *without being citizens* whether they are H1-B VIsa holders, or Green Card holders. Those are examples of patterns of legal immigration. The point the article dances around is that these mothers do not fit into any of that narrow set of defined categories of immigrants with authorization. We can have a discussion about whether that *should* be a crime or not (my view is that it should not and that we need to re-examine our failed immigration policies), but simply mischaracterizing what these poor mothers are being charged with is lunacy and will allow a conservative to block your points out with the adult equivalent of "La-la-la! I'm not listening" (essentially the point I make above, but stated as "They're charged with ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION, DUMMY"). We need to stop looking like loonies or no positive change can occur. Notice that even Obama (the "progressive" candidate) is for building a wall across the southern border to the country. Why is this? It's because often, articles like this one, while their heart is in the right place (sympathy for the plight of undocumented immigrants) actually may end up pushing conservatives and undecideds further right -- because they see these logical flaws and don't already have their minds made up. I try not to be overly critical without offering suggestions for improvement, so here is one: Use the human-interest story angle, *coupled* with an economic argument -- something like "they pay taxes on their earnings, and they pay into Social Security but will never receive a penny from it, all of which is money that goes to the government for the benefit of US citizens." It works better on conservatives.

"Several were obviously

"Several were obviously pregnant." Anchor babies aweigh! Note to Quigley -- being in the US illegally is a crime. Sounds redundant, but the point needs to be repeated for the benefit of certain particularly thick skulls. Also from Quigley: "The U.S. Catholic Bishops, no leftist group..." On immigration, they're leftist to the core, despite the disproportionate price paid by their largely working-class flock for the welcome the US foolishly extends to the world’s “wretched refuse.”

I find myself torn. I don't

I find myself torn. I don't believe anyone should be here illegally yet know that the jobs illegals do for the most part are jobs the average American doesn't want nor could live on unless they want to remain in extreme poverty. Remove the illegal worker and find lettuce at 2.50 a head to pay an American worker. How fast the complaining would begin. A bona fide workers program , where children of such remain citizens of the parents country of origin would work for me. This would also enable legal immigration as well. Let's face it. they aren't going away. I think alot of the anger people feel comes from a 'white' America when the fact is in about 20 -30 years White America will not be the majority anymore. I bet you'd hear complaining even if it was a legal immigration. this same response happened when the Irish came and when the Italians did. They worked the lowest paid jobs and were being blamed for taking 'American' jobs. As for our boarders ? we should bring the troops home from that BS war in Iraq - save the money - and put our troops on the boarders. Put them in the ports . the airports. close us up tighter than a ducks rear.

Unless we are Native

Unless we are Native Americans-First Nations People-we are ALL illegal immigrants or descendants of same.

"Several were

On immigration, they're leftist to the core, despite the disproportionate price paid by their largely working-class flock for the welcome the US foolishly extends to the world’s “wretched refuse.” ____ so your parents or grandparents ect ( unless your 100% native) must have been wretched refuse.

Sorry--NO SYMPATHY HERE FOR

Sorry--NO SYMPATHY HERE FOR ILLEGALS--YA GOTTA BE LEGAL!! SAVE YOUR BREATH ABOUT THIS "we're ALL illegal, etc." STUFF--MY ANCESTORS "MET THE BOAT" ! THE LEFT IS ON THE WRONG SIDE OF THIS ISSUE. AN OPEN BORDER BENEFITS NO COUNTRY. IT PULLS DOWN ONE AND ENCOURAGES THE OTHER TO IGNORE ITS OWN SOCIAL AND ECONOMIC PROBLEMS. ALL AT THE ULTIMATE EXPENSE OF THE MIDDLE CLASS OF ONE AND THE DESPERATE & NEGLECTED OF THE OTHER...

Mexico is close enough for

Mexico is close enough for them to be legal. Just make them legal. Welcome Mexican workers and deport Wall Street riff raff.

To Ripley: Eventual

To Ripley: Eventual minority status for American whites was not always inevitable, but was the result of a notable piece of immigration "reform" -- namely, the Immigration Act of 1965. Prior to that, immigration was kept majority European in order to preserve the existing ethnic balance in the US. What a silly thing to want to do!

This question is not about

This question is not about losing American jobs. American jobs are now held by grossly under paid workers in other countries. This is a question of racism and xenophobia. How can we arrest these people with paramilitary style raids when the greatest symbol for the American ideal, The Statue of LIBERTY, says send us your tired and poor and huddled masses. Hypocrites all of you!

Laws can be changed. Until

Laws can be changed. Until then, enforce them. During most of the Bush Administration, US immigration laws weren't enforced. Now they are being enforced somewhat selectively. That US law enforcement doesn't necessarily behave kindly or fairly probably isn't news to: the scientist who was hounded by the FBI & saw his career destroyed (Clinton Administration); people at the NY GOP convention (NYC cops, & other members of the "policing community"), any event at which Bush has appeared including his so-called town hall events (Secret Service, local police), the GOP convention in Minneapolis & the famous Maricopa county sheriff's very unpleasant methods of enforcing the law. People have been herded into metal pens, tasered, peppered, etc,. (NY GOP convention) & been subject to false arrest & had to spend a night to several days in scary NYC jails. Peaceful demonstrators in Minneapolis were hurt, harassed & arrested too. As for the "Americans won't do those jobs" well, let them get hungry enough & they will, they did in the past. How about making some of those jobs pay a living wage? Or people mowing their own lawns or getting rid of grass altogether? Some illegal immigrants & some legal immigrants are returning to their native country or leaving for Canada or western Europe, if they can. They go where the jobs are. Some are here to earn money to buy land & go home. That has always been a part of the "immigrant experience" in the US--some people who emigrated here never intended to stay and some decided to go home, didn't like it here. There is a difference between refugee & an immigrant. So, it's not ok to deport pregnant women illegally in the US, but it's ok to deport men illegally in the US? Women & men not be treated equally under US law? Or what's the reason for the emphasis on pregnant women? Because this is an emotional appeal, not one based on logic? Just what is the reason, based in law, that the US has a duty to accept anyone who wants to live or work here? There's nothing in the Constitution that establishes that right. I know of no other developed nation in the world that says, everyone welcome. None. Most allow in fewer people than the US does.

I do not think that west

I do not think that west should take more illegals in because the workers in the west are competing for will paid jobs.

The shame here, I think, is

The shame here, I think, is not that illegal aliens are being deported - this has been going on in for a long time in all countries and is just a part of the machinery of international law - but that it's being used as a political wedge to position Americans against Americans. Further, the muscle being deployed to accomplish the task is unnecessary and costly and obviously all for show. This is something that none of us needs. A more humane and less politically charged solution is being called for here, but is anyone in Washington up to the task? Personally, I think that Washington is too busy thinking about itself to really care. Same old story.

The very fact that

The very fact that immigrants have been crossing our porous southern border for decades, and I mean decades, is not a "surprize" that anyone can stand behind. 9/11 has been prostituted for the sake of closing us off and making it possible for the hand in Bush's head that makes him speak (The Ventriloquist) to terrify us. Or attempt to. Think about it. For decades people have been coming across the southern border and there has been no real outcry. To the contrary - they have even been hired by our politicians. The people coming over our southern border are not taking jobs away from US citizens. I challenge anyone here to give an honest story about being turned down for a job because someone from Mexico or S. America was standing behind you. Or even a story about someone you know personally. So, here's the deal. Make it legal for them to come, work, pay taxes, send their money home, and/ or go home AND if its legal for them to be here, they would have leverage and options and anyone employing them would probably be forced to raise wages to minimum wage levels because, well, the "legals" could work anywhere and because at the very least minimum wage would have been established across the board and that would be the job YOU would be willing to work. Now I know I haven't thought this through enough but the hair on the back of my neck stands on end every time I hear someone say, "because they're illegal" and "its our law".In my heart I know, as a country, we are all implicit in not having demanded the letter of the law at least 70 years ago. No, we have waited for the decade (almost) of TERROR! Also interesting if you consider the fact that none of the supposed 9/11 terrorists came through our southern border. As for the wall? Who ISN'T tuning in their grave? It is a psychological weapon against US. Not a means of keeping "them"out. A means of keeping us in. A means of making us more afraid. More xenophobic. Creating false fear about jobs, money, the economy, our very security. How high a wall will it take for everyone to breathe easier? I say, the higher the wall the more fearful we become because it makes the "threat" seem even bigger. We live on a globe, spinning in the universe. That feels dangerous enough without manufacturing scary things. We need to open our minds, heart, arms to the potential of growth and brotherhood/sisterhood/humankindhood. We need to give our livers a break.

You got it, They shuld be

You got it, They shuld be arresting the employers. Seriously, how bad is it in Mexico, do they not hire women? Are the wages so low that they can't survive?

To those of you who share

To those of you who share this sentiment: ". This is a question of racism and xenophobia..... The Statue of LIBERTY, says send us your tired and poor and huddled masses. Hypocrites all of you! EVERY country has immigration laws and quotas. The millions that come here illegally each year are doing so with the full knowledge that what they are doing is against our laws. They should not be given any kind of fast track that allows them to jump ahead in line, pushing to the end of the line, those who are playing the game legally. Even at Ellis Island there was a rigorous system they had to go thru to get in. They had to be healthy; show they were coming for a job that was waiting for them; and had to declare how much money they had in their possession. They had to PROVE they were not going to be a drain on this, their host country. If you insist on making comparisons to the past, please make sure they are accurate. The past immigrants did not come here demanding handouts from a (then) non-existant welfare system as they clearly do now. They gladly take jobs that pay terribly, making them eligible for every bit of assistance program that exists! Free meals at school for their kids; free tutors (I had to pay), free childcare; food stamps; subsidized housing or a sub-prime home loan- then move more people into one house than is allowed by law. I lived this reality, so I am not a racist xenophobe!!! Plenty of other crimes come along with those nice mothers who are only here to work. My daughter is 1/2 Mexican, so don't even try to pin those names on me! Even the Legal Mexicans resent the illegals taking like the USA owes them something for nothing. This is warped, bleeding-heart liberal nonsense... and I am (mostly) a moderate-leaning Democrat.

"Hand outs" from government

"Hand outs" from government institutions, Mad As Hell? A person must have a Social Security number to receive government assistance...such a person would be DOCUMENTED. So, illegal immigrants don't receive handouts from tax dollars. You could have found this out yourself in 5 minutes of research...

remember the management

remember the management goons of the 20's and thirties? guess what' they're now government goons. just more cheneybush bullshit in the rape of america

thank you mark and ecd4me.

thank you mark and ecd4me. you have got the point. these are not terrorist that use just guns. if they are working for most American companies, they are besides having snuck into are country, they have stolen someones identity. No other country in the world stands for this type of invasion by people from other nations. mexico has gun boats patroling it's southern river border. why doesn't our country? If you feel sorry for the plight of people who have stolen into your country then you are not an American. defend with honor.
