Reality Is No Rehearsal

Governor Sarah Palin did very well in the vice-presidential debate. She was well handled, well rehearsed and well prepared. For a 90 minute, tightly structured quasi-debate she was able to hold her own. She demonstrated a cursory understanding of some very general issues affecting America today. The problem is the real world is unrehearsed; life is live. This was not as her handlers have stated, Sarah Palin "unplugged" or "unfiltered." It was just the opposite. In the few instances where Governor Palin has been "unplugged" and allowed to respond in an unrehearsed fashion, she has failed miserably.

Many conservative Americans fell in love with Governor Palin after she delivered a well-written and well-rehearsed speech at the Republican National Convention. Based upon that performance, a floundering McCain campaign became buoyant and gained the support from the Republican conservative base that it had been seeking since he clinched his party's nomination.

Eight days after her speech at the Republican Convention, Governor Palin sat down for an unscripted and unrehearsed television interview with ABC's Charlie Gibson. She demonstrated to America she has very little if any insight into, or understanding of, the salient issues that are impacting America today. When asked about the Bush Doctrine, Governor Palin had absolutely no clue what Charlie Gibson was referencing. This doctrine is a standing six-year-old policy of military intervention. One would expect the person seeking the second highest office in the land would understand a failed doctrine that totally disrupted the world order and nearly bankrupted this nation.

She believes the war in Iraq is a part of God's plan. Her religious justifications for the invasion in Iraq sound very similar to the Muslim fundamentalists that attacked America; according to them, they were carrying out the will of Allah. This is why religious fundamentalism has no place in foreign or domestic policy.

When asked if America has the right to make cross-border attacks into Pakistan from Afghanistan, with or without the approval of the Pakistani government, Governor Palin's answer was so incoherent that Charlie Gibson had to restate the question by saying, "And let me finish with this. I got lost in a blizzard of words there."

From ABC and Charlie Gibson, Governor Palin went to CBS with Katie Couric. Again, this was an unscripted and unrehearsed television interview. This time, she demonstrated she did not really understand the voting record of her own running mate. When asked to give examples of Senator McCain leading the charge for increased oversight of the financial industry, Governor Palin went into the standard "maverick" line, and then said, "I'll try to find ya some and I'll bring 'em to ya." When asked by Katie Couric in another interview about the newspapers and magazines she reads that impact her worldview, Governor Palin responded, "I've read most of them, again with a great appreciation for the press, for the media." When pressed for specifics, she responded, "Um, all of them, any of them that have been in front of me all these years." She never named one newspaper or magazine. Not even a paper from Alaska like the Anchorage Daily News or the Wasilla Frontiersman.

When asked a question about partisanship in an interview with Sean Hannity, Governor Palin said, "Well, there is a danger in allowing some obsessive partisanship to get into the issue that we're talking about today. And that's something that John McCain, too, his track record, proving that he can work both sides of the aisle, he can surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed to deal with an issue like this." What? "... surpass the partisanship that must be surpassed ..." Can you imagine a Vice President Palin on the world stage representing America with mindless drivel such as this? Has not President George W. Bush been embarrassing enough?

After these interviews, Charlie Gibson and Katie Couric were attacked for being too tough on Governor Palin and engaging in "gotcha" journalism. As responsible journalists, it was not their fault for asking direct and relevant questions. It was Governor Palin's fault for not being able to answer them.

As an informed electorate, we should want to hear from and clearly understand the candidate's views on the economy, health care, international trade etc. What's the basis of Governor Palin's world view? Effective foreign policy is based upon a clear understanding of culture, history, economics, and other geopolitical dynamics that motivate people to act and interact. It is difficult to develop a clear worldview when you have not traveled the world. It is troubling to learn that Governor Palin received her first passport in 2007, and has only taken one trip outside of North America in her entire adult life.

As American voters assess and analyze Governor Palin's performance during the quasi-debate, it is important to understand what they were watching. They were watching a person who was well handled and rehearsed. This was not Sarah Palin "unplugged." She was able to manage fairly simple issues for a 90-minute period in front of a live audience. She did that well. The problem is the real world is unrehearsed; life is live.

Where she fails America terribly is in her obvious lack of command of the subject matter. Where's the gravitas? What is evidenced through her unrehearsed exchanges with the Gibsons, Courics and Hannitys of the world, is a person who has not thought much about world events, their causes and effects. When asked about Iraq, she said, "I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq." Really? Where have you been since March 20, 2003?

Kathleen Parker, conservative writer for the National Review, wrote after the interviews referenced above, "... circumstances have changed since Palin was introduced as just a hockey mom with lipstick - what a difference a financial crisis makes - and a more complicated picture has emerged ... As we've seen and heard more from John McCain's running mate, it is increasingly clear that Palin is a problem ... Palin's recent interviews with Charles Gibson, Sean Hannity, and now Katie Couric have all revealed an attractive, earnest, confident candidate. Who Is Clearly Out Of Her League."

If, as President Reagan said, "America is a shining city upon a hill whose beacon light guides freedom-loving people everywhere," we must raise the bar, not lower it. After almost eight years of George W. Bush, we can see very clearly the problems that a less-than-knowledgeable leader can cause. If America is going to be a beacon, the lights must at least be on. Unfortunately, with what I've seen from Governor Palin, that light keeps getting dimmer, and dimmer and dimmer...

Reality was not too far off

Reality was not too far off the Debate Premonition advanced before it. Ifill moderated a salvage operation aimed at shoring up McCain's dummy. By all rights, by the facts, the instincts, the soupcons and everything else all signs point to an Obama win in this election. If instead we see another Florida/Ohio scenario, well that will be the last nail in the coffin of democracy in America.

I think you were too polite

I think you were too polite to use the obvious metaphor. The lights are on, but nobody's home.

To me, this was Palin during

To me, this was Palin during the VP Debate: Kid's Soccer Game John McCain John McCain, Fundamental, Strong, American Workforce, American Workforce, Workforce Ya Betcha Joe Six-Pack and Hockey Moms John McCain John McCain John McCain I'm a Mom I'm a Mom John McCain John McCain I'm a Mom Ronald Reagan John McCain John McCain etc., etc., etc. Rhetoric, rhetoric, hot-button words, more rhetoric, etc., etc. John McCain, Etc.

Sure, "She was well handled,

Sure, "She was well handled, well rehearsed and well prepared." But, it was till obvious by her inability to answer certain questions, and her tendency to ramble through rehearsed talking points, that she is the same old Sarah Palin. She doesn't know the substance of any of the important issues facing the nation, and is grossly unprepared to be in the White House in any capacity. We don't need another "good ole boy," this time a "good ole gal," near the presidency. Look at the results of eight years of that!

Yes, Gov. Palin did a

Yes, Gov. Palin did a passable job in this well-rehearsed "debate", but it was painfully obvious that she's in "way over her head". She doesn't have a world-view other that what was quickly drummed into her head by the McCain team. However, the "Joe Six-pack" voter she mentioned in the debate also isn't very bright, nor a world-view voter, so I'm quite worried that we're in for a very tight election. And given new "voter fraud" laws in numerous states and non-verifiable electronic voting machines, I'm quite worried that the Republican machine is primed to steal yet another election from us. Let's make sure we get the thinking electorate out to vote so that we can insure that America does, indeed, change. Yes we can!

I hope that people in the

I hope that people in the U.S. are not as dumb as the right-wing are betting they are. It is almost painful to listen to Plastic Palin. During the interviews and debate, I kept waiting to hear her yell out "Shazaaam". I completely agreed with Biden that the McSame campaign has not said one word regarding their policies and where they truly stand on any issue. If one-liners and zingers are what Americans are looking for then I feel sad for this country.

All that last nights so

All that last nights so called debates proved was that Sarah Palin has a fairly good memory. Every answer was rote memory. It is too bad we couldn't have seen her in a real debate, but then she would have been a laughing stock, and that would never do, would it?

Her appeal to "Joe Six-pack"

Her appeal to "Joe Six-pack" is backfiring: http://www.canow.org/canoworg/2008/10/hey-there-joe-s.html

Gov. Sarah Palin: "The

Gov. Sarah Palin: "The Constitution allows a bit more authority for the Vice President who wants it." Can you say "Hello Dick Cheney in lipstick"?

I beg to respectfully

I beg to respectfully differ. Sarah Palin did not do well for the simple reason that she seldom even tried to answer the questions that were put to her. Real life is marked by those inconvenient times when questions and problems present themselves, but refuse to go away unless you actually address them. And if you don't, if you fudge or prevaricate or try to change the subject, the results can be deeply unpleasant.

I think the photo included

I think the photo included of her escaping the debate is very revealing. Doesn't it look like a college freshman who's pretty "stoked" that she received a C- on a history exam she didn't really study for? You could see that mentality at work during the debate whenever she was thrown off trying to remember just exactly what the republican talking-point was. My favorite little gem was when she forgave her own ignorance, with a wink at the camera stating, "you have to remember, I've only been the VP candidate for about 5 weeks now." If she'd known 6 weeks ago she'd be running for president, she would have started studying for it back then. So, let's give her SOME credit. Afterall, that was a lot to remember completely by wrote in just a few days, all without the aid of actually understanding any of it. It just goes to show'ya that anyone can be president as long as they buckle-down, REALLY hit the books and study hard 3 days before the exam. The only problem is that it's a pass/fail course where "fail" means that the entire world goes up in flames. One can only assume that when mccain's cancer finally catches up with him, the people "handling" her through the debate will be "handling" her through her presidency. They did a good job last night, considering what they had to work with. Too bad their names won't appear on the ballot.

How is it possible that she

How is it possible that she got away with steering the debate questions back to the answers she had been rehearsing in the earlier part of this week at Debate Camp? This was fact cramming regurgitation at its worst, and I'm surprised the mediator didn't just pack and and leave, giving the obvious win to Joe Biden. What we see on that hill is not a light switched on, nor a beacon. My dear friends that beacon was dismantled and its concrete used to help build part of the bridge to nowhere.

What a joke. I knew the

What a joke. I knew the media, setting her bar so low, would claim she did fabulous. The public seems unfooled. She avoided every question and for 90 minutes said he same few sentence fractions of "policy" and "campaign speech snippets" Even her supporters think she lost gauging by the polls. The media should stop attempting to prop her up. Did she make any sense with what she said about climate change? No, it was a jumbled and nonsensical as she had been in those interviews. "Gotcha'" seems anything at all asked of her and followed up (not allowed in debate) Biden should have mentioned her nixing of rape kits, and her earmark history. Not that she would have responded. She answered nothing

maverick maverick maverick

maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick maverick why? "because we say so!" Maverick (n.): "Unbranded young calf or yearling." She is not a calf and is very branded as is McCain. Maverick was considered an outlaw in the story made into the TV show, by the lawmen, taht is. That is why they called him "Maverick"

Palindrone: If you were to

Palindrone: If you were to re thread Sarah Palin's words backwards-- often it would be as incoherant as what she has to say forwards.

You gotta be

You gotta be kidding....(shaking my head). The real nightmare is that the people who think Bush is a great world leader will vote for her--to these folks having a command of the issues must irritate them....

The very fact that she came

The very fact that she came out as a shrill, sarcastic, rude person set the tone for me to evaluate her. Shrill and sarcasm are not substitutes for knowledge. This woman gets an F in my grade book.

I wonder what will happen to

I wonder what will happen to her support with "the base" when it soaks in that she stated that the right to privacy is an issue in the abortion rights question, that she supports civil rights and civil unions for gay people, and that she wants to continue Dick Cheney's excellent work expanding the powers of the Vice President?

To me the terrible thing is

To me the terrible thing is that Governor Palin is irrelevant in any serious, informed context. What's terrible about it is that her presence drags a sophisticated, thinking person like Senator Biden down to her level. Worst of all is that both, Biden and Palin, are pseudo choices in what ceased to be a democracy eight years ago when the Democratic Party decided not to contest the Florida Supreme Court and US Supreme Court decisions. There can be no recovery from this for the United States. The Romans called it panem et circenses - bread and games. When the bread runs out, man, you switch to the games. However, when the games no longer entertain and the bread has run out - brother, look out, you ain't seen nothin' yet! Pete Edler

I am grateful for this

I am grateful for this article and especially for the insightful comments. I was beginning to feel a little crazy listening to people actually taking her seriously. She can't do the job, period. She can't be Vice-President; she can't be President. And, we all know that the men behind the curtain have lots of plans for America. We can't let them have another election or they have the country.

Stupidity and blindness is

Stupidity and blindness is what we could say that both Republicans and Democrats want of their constituency. Very few will articulate the virtues of the protections of the Constitution, Bill of Rights, Balance of Powers, Freedom of the Press, Rule of democratic law and international treaties. Why? Because Bush and a slavish collapsing Congress have spent the last 8 years subverting these democratic structures to profit from criminal war and racketeering. It serves these anti-American politicos well if we think of them as stupid or simple while they suck the life's blood out of our nation and people with rapacious malice of forethought.

If you watched the debate on

If you watched the debate on C Span, which showed a split screen, you saw Gov Palin virtually ignore Biden most of the time. When he spoke, her facial expressions were not even related to anything he said. Instead she was Her delivery was best described as "parroting"-I think she was wired.

If you do not answer the

If you do not answer the questions, you are not debating. Why does Sarah Palin have such a hard time answering questions? No answers is not a solution!

John Winthrop, a Puritan

John Winthrop, a Puritan preacher, referenced a "city on a hill" in a 1630 jeremiad about nations' responsibilities to God. Ronald Reagan's speechwriters plagiarized Winthrop and Sarah Palin memorized the Cliff's Notes edition of Reagan's administration.

How can anyone even say she

How can anyone even say she did okay in the debate? This woman not only has no substance, she can't even speak English properly! She'd barely pass a high school speech class... show 'ya, hurtin', thinkin' etc. And how many times did she say "also"? I tried to count, but gave up because it was making my husband crazy. VOTE for OBAMA/BIDEN, she must not be anywhere near the oval office!!! Oh, will someone please explain to me what "bless their hearts" means. God forbid that she would be in a position to say that to world leaders.

I respectfully disagree with

I respectfully disagree with you. Palin didn't "do well" at all. She didn't absolutely implode on stage and so some pundits are now saying "she held her own". What a low standard of performance. I’m not an English teacher, but anyone who listened closely to the words of Sarah Palin on Thursday night had to be a bit embarrassed by her poor use of our language. She often failed to speak in complete sentences. A lot of her lines were vague and incoherent. She used numerous malapropisms. Much of the time it was difficult to understand what she was talking about. And this was in addition to Palin’s inability to accurately cite facts or remember the correct names of key political figures, both American and international. I was actually starting to feel some sympathy for Palin. But then I realized that the campaign for Vice President is not a popularity contest. It’s about proving your competence to do this job. Your ability to speak, and speak clearly, is an indication of your thinking, your preparation, your confidence and your experience. Palin’s verbal confusion, her reliance on Republican talking points, rehearsed attack lines, worn-out clichés, and her inability (or outright refusal) to answer so many of the questions asked of her, gave us an indication of her readiness to assume the Vice Presidency. Unfortunately for Palin, and for John McCain, the debate reaffirmed something most of us have suspected for a while: Sarah Palin is clearly not qualified to hold this important office.

Good article. I agree, she

Good article. I agree, she did not debate last night. It sounded like she was reciting talking points that had been drilled into her by republican leaders. It is clear to me that she is under qualified to lead a world super power.

she failed by hewing to the

she failed by hewing to the idiotic belief 'they hate us for our freedoms'. she failed by her adoration and belief in reagan, unrecognizing him as the beginning of the troubles we are in now (deregulation, militarism, wanton spending by the military/indistrial complex, 'trickle down' theories now proven to be mere licenses for theft, etc.) she failed by what she succeeded at being; the successful ninny. wink, wink indeed. however, hers is not the failure that matters, it's obama's, and now more so.

Both Dr. Leon and most of

Both Dr. Leon and most of his commentators miss the point of Sarah Palin. American political campaigns are now about personalities not policies, and campaign "debates" are about performance not issues. Next to sober ol' Joe Biden, Sarah was . . . well, Miss Congeniality. And from her opening greeting and "Can I call you Joe," she dazzled her admiring audience. I thought Palin wiped the floor with Biden. After all, it's what ya do, not what ya say, you betcha! *wink**wink*). You go, girl!

That woman is 44 or 45 years

That woman is 44 or 45 years old, fir goodness sake, not a coed or teeny-bopper beauty contestant! Surely her mayorship and governoship, brief as they have been, should have helped her learn a bit more poise and propriety. On the other hand, with last night and the previous several weeks as context, it's no wonder her teenage daughter is in the state she is in, and Palin herself thinks her antics are cute and refreshing.

This debate just made the

This debate just made the comparison with George Bush even closer. Here we have another empty vessel, coached with a strategy of and crammed with enough talking points to let her get through the debate. She, like George Bush, is not stupid (really1). She, like him is just incredibly ignorant of the world around them and with too lazy an intellect to want to find out. If, God help us, she became president, ust like George Bush she would be managed like a puppet by the likes of Schoeneman and, in time, would come to believe those ideas are really hers. We have had 8 years of this kind of nightmare. This next decade is going to be make or break for the United States. We need very intelligent and well educated people who know how to pick good advisors but, more importantly, know how to separate good advice from poor advice. No one can be expected to know it all, but they have to know enough to be able to tell when someone is leading them down the path of their own agenda. If Bush ever understood that, it was too late to do anything about it. With a little luck we may dodge this bullet and have Obama and Biden as our leaders next year. Just consider how much different (and better) this country would be now if the Republicans with the help of the Supreme Court hadn't stolen the 2000 election and we had an intelligent and informed person like Gore in for the past 8 years. Some people confuse their vote for the presidency as some sort of popularity contest, like we had in high school. This election is perhaps the most important since the election of 1932. Let's take it seriously!

The 3 or 4 inch heels said

The 3 or 4 inch heels said it all along with the winks and flirtation with the camera... that was for all you men. She has already staked her claim for 2012.... lord, assuming we all survive the next 4 if they take the white house again.

What was with the part about

What was with the part about us being grandparents speaking to our grand kids of a time when we were "free"? So if we don't vote for John McSame, we will all loose our freedom? Are the American people really this stupid? Her strategy was to speak to the least educated in our society, but I thought she had already aroused the republican base.

Geraldine Ferraro has stood

Geraldine Ferraro has stood where Palin stood last night but she did so with class. No winks and flirting with the camera. This was a national debate of great importance not a beauty contest. Ferraro has stated that she supports Obama/Biden but wished Palin success so that little girls can see a woman hold her own in a traditionally man's arena. Well, Palin just showed little girls how to be disrespectful, biting, callous, shrewd, rude, cheeky, cheap and vacuous. They see this enough on MTV they shouldn't have to see a "serious" political role-model using cute over substance. For all of her feigned respect for Biden her real maliciousness was clear and I feel she owes him an apology. She owes me one too, for that matter. Anyone else? www.thetruthburns.wordplay.com

Palin attempted to create an

Palin attempted to create an image of herself last night as someone who cares about people. Yet, after Biden told the story about the car crash that killed his wife and severely injured his children, Palin stood there without saying a word. If she is as caring of a person as she would like us all to believe, why on earth didn't she acknowledge Biden's loss? An authentically compassionate person would have. Last night's debate demonstrated a real disconnect between who she's telling us she is and her actions (or non-action).

As a woman, I am appalled by

As a woman, I am appalled by Sarah Palin as a serious female VP candidate -- or a serious candidate of either gender, for that matter. A serious candidate doesn't "play to the camera" like a B-film ingenue, bat her eyes, and peform "shout outs" shortly after discussing a war that has taken over 4,000 lives courtesy of her political party. As a mother, I am distressed that she has "outed" her 17-year-old daughter's pre-nuptual pregnancy with no regard to the child's future life, but only to advance her own political career. And, as a Jew, I was appalled that she would use the phrase "never again" -- a term championed by Jews worldwide to remember the Holocaust and to ensure it never occurs again-- in reference to a catch phrase she was given regarding "Joe sixpack" and "hockey moms". Indeed, the ill-chosen turn of phrase was not lost on my 27 year old son or his friends watching the debate, either. They told me that on election day, as much as her woeful ignorance, her inability to pronounce names and words, and her desperate efforts at charm that came across as crass, terminal cuteness, her inappropriateness in the use of that phrase -- and her obvious obliviousness to its meaning for millions around the country and the world -- would guide their ballots away from the McCain-Palin ticket. Indeed, they are running away from that ticket as fast as their young legs can carry them. And, albeit older and slower, I'm right behind them!

Oh heck... Sarah Palin is

Oh heck... Sarah Palin is so clearly a product of the United States of America that it surprises me to hear people talk about the threat to democracy, to this country, as if there *is* any democracy in this country, as if America still has anything to offer beside moral posturing and the raping and plundering of everyone and everything on the planet. it's not about republicans and democrats, people. this is who we are. not a pretty sight.

Cuteness is not a

Cuteness is not a qualification.

“America is a nation of

“America is a nation of exceptionalism.” – Sarah Palin in VP debate. If this was not a “beyond-the-Palin” Freudian slip from a politician “speaking in tongues,” then, pray tell, what was it? The Webster’s Dictionary offers this demure definition of “exceptionalism”: a theory or doctrine (as of social or political action) based on the assumption that exceptional circumstances will result in distortion of a generally predictable course in certain instances. … The “wired” Governor unblinkingly hit that nail right in the head. Now we know for certain why it is that she can see Manchuria (wink) from her living-room window.

PALIN WAS WIRED! I haven't

PALIN WAS WIRED! I haven't read where anyone else mentions that they saw what I saw. I am an artist and my observations of visual details may be a little more acute some. Within five minutes of watching, I could clearly see a very regular cylindrical shape at her right shoulder that was pretty close to her hair color but the color was slightly darker than her hair, and the shape was rigid. It remained there for at least fifteen minutes of the debate. I could then detect it when the view was at her back. Did anybody else notice? Try to see it if you rewatch.

Forget VP Candidate... How

Forget VP Candidate... How did it come to be that the wonderfully independent free spirited citizens of Alaska ever became encumbered with this airhead as their Governor? One clue is there aren't as many women in Alaska as men, and so, being a woman in any rural area these days is like being a one-eyed person in a country of blind men. That I've got to say, she's ridden to it's utmost, even to a VP debate? Shame on us! Reread that section of the Book of Revelation about the, 'Whore of Babylon', drunk on the blood of men fallen before her, if you want to see to where I see it. When this is over, I wish Alaskans the best of luck getting rid of her there as well.

I thought Sarah Palin was

I thought Sarah Palin was cute as a button. The thing is though, I thought Joe Biden was Presidential.

What's the difference now?

What's the difference now? Since the traitorous congress has passed the latest cash give away that the lowly taxpayers will have to pay back and not see a nickel of that $700,000,000,000.00 or the $100,000,000,000.00 tax cuts which will again go to the wealthiest .0001% of the shit in this country, just what is the use of anything. People are too stupid, too dumbed down and too vegged out to function in the real maintenance of what is left of our democracy.... the hell with that, there is no democracy any more, just the elitocracy. It doesn't matter now, not the presidency, not the jobs, not the economy, nothing. This is just about the saddest day in my life and I am thankful that my parents did not survive to see what has become of this country if it can even be called that anymore. It will be in the best interest of the world to elect the McPalin ticket because obama is no different, it is just mcpalin will hasten the process.

Shallow...thin...superficial.

Shallow...thin...superficial...cute as a button...also...also...also...also.

Last night was painful to

Last night was painful to watch. I stopped counting the terms "maverick", "change is coming" and all the folksy slang. She gave me a serious headache, and made we wonder when we fell to the level of what used to be called "ignorant trailer trash". She spoke to us as though we were a nation of uneducated or pathologically stupid people. Gov. Palin, the American people are not as ignorant as you and your running mate and your handlers think we are! We do not like being talked down to by someone who apparently is nothing more that a fish monger in skirts who is so ignorant of the important issues that you feel compelled to bring others down to you level. We do not accept this assessment, Senator McCain and Gov. Palin, and if your party allows for a free election, you will see it on Nov. 4th as you are sent to a sound defeat!

The "debate" was apalling.

The "debate" was apalling. But what is even worse is that so many pundits on radio and TV today (Friday) have failed to mention that Palin did not answer the questions posed: she answered the questions she wanted to have been asked. She sounded like a robot, a robot that blinked, winked, smiled, scrunched up her nose and butchered the language. Is "you betcha, doggone it, ya, wanna, fixen," ad nauseum to be considered well done--presidential? That many people said her performance would silence the few Republicans who, earlier, thought she should be removed from the ticket is not to be believed. It was a pleasure to read this essay. Would that more politicos, and pundits would wake up.

I really want to see blown

I really want to see blown up frames of her close-ups to see if she was "wired". That would be the nail in the coffin. Sic Transit Gloria Mundi.

If y'all don't get rid of

If y'all don't get rid of the computerized voting machines down there, you are all finished. We are all finished. Hate to be dramatic, but it's true (a concerned Canadian)

I found the debates funny.

I found the debates funny. Palin contridicted herself at least a dozen times. (Example: I don't support laws stopping homosexual couples vs. a couple seconds later saying she wanted an amendment to say marriage is only between a man and a woman and a couple seconds later saying that marriage is an undefinable thing.) Watching Palin was like watching a monkey at the zoo, except the monkey throws its poo instead of accidentally sticking its own face in it.

It is sad when you are

It is sad when you are considered to have succeeded because you avoided looking dumber than a brick and merely looked utterly incompetent and clueless. Way to step up Winky!

Palin as cute as a

Palin as cute as a button? I looked in my wife's button box and they are all cuter than Sarah Palin. Smarter too.

John of Maine: You're at

Ever since Reagan and Bush teh Younger, republican politics has been about electing a front man with some sort of charm factor to bring in enough swing vote to get elected. Unfortunately, these puppets and their handlers distinguished themselves by their gross incompetence, as our country spirals down the toilet.

1) Idiocracy. Look it

1) Idiocracy. Look it up! 2) What if nobody had taken her bubble gum away from her before the debate started? 3) Maybe this is all an odd complex trick to make Joe Biden look brilliant by comparison, and have us forget that he is the guy who suggested dismembering Iraq into 3 parts, whether or not the Iraqis want that.

I thought Sen Biden was

I thought Sen Biden was excellent, in the sense we we elect people who have accomplished little in life as long as they have good hair and swear they are in politics to "look out for the common people". Hey Joe, after 40 years in politics, you are not part of the solution. But maybe the other thing. The good gov is more like me, but should resist the handlers. Bottom line: Change does not come from electing experience. "Experience = more of the same". Just give me a doer-mom that is not a lawyer and has young kids whose future is at stake; that will create some change. I am stupid and simple that way. Seems to me the "experienced" politicians have created the mess we are in. Why do we want to elect another one? I guess Americans are simple and stupid that way. I assure you that a Vladimer Putin will have a higher regard for Sarah Palin that a lifetime political failure like Sen. Biden.

Palin has no clue what she

Palin has no clue what she is doing. Even after memorizing everything she needed to say, she still looked like an idiot. Every time she felt uncomfortable, she started saying things like 'where are the hockey moms at'. People eat that stuff up. I heard it put best on the radio- When did 'relatability' begin to trump knowledge in a presidential race? The only reason she is on the ticket is because she is pretty. There were many more competent Republican women to choose from, but McCain needed focus off of the fact he has one foot in the grave. She contradicted herself at least a half a dozen times and the few interviews she has been allowed to do by the McCain campaign have revealed only her inadequacies. It is clear to me why they keep trying to 'protect' (read: hide) her from the media. Biden looked presidential while she looked like she was running for student council.

Who are these people and

Who are these people and what debate did they watch? Or did they watch? Sarah Palin ignored the politicians and the media, spoke over their heads and went straight to the people. The slurs you are issuing are just what are expected for the politically incorrect and honest. Way to go Sarah!

I agree with Mark, who said

I agree with Mark, who said that Joe Biden came off presidential. I will not waste one word on Sarah Palin. End of comment.

Is she for real? Say it

Is she for real? Say it ain't so Sarah.

I cannot imagine anyone

I cannot imagine anyone voting for Sarah. The only difference between her and Bush is that she can lie with a straight face. Bush has a special lying face that I can spot a mile away. That wrinkle between the eyes and woeful look on his face. For the daughter of a school teacher she has terrible speech patterns. My father was an immigrant who never finished high school but all of us kids speak like him. A person most people thought was a college graduate at time when that meant a good education. The "ya" and "cha" and "ins" for ing grate on me. With all of the means to get education today no one has an excuse to be of so ignorant of the world around you. Unless she is another who can't use the internet and e-mail.

The truth about Palin is

The truth about Palin is that she is, as many commentators have pointed out, a female Manchurian candidate. She is pretty, pouty, and shamelessly believes that flirting with voters can win the election. Even more frightening is her lack of empathy. There was an incredible moment when Joe Biden pointed out that he understood what it was to be a parent, and not knowing if one son would die. He struggled for self control. She did not even notice, let alone display a moment of compassion. She can't even fake it whether its her own family she uses as props, or a fellow human being you just asked if you could call him "Joe". If we get Biden-McCain, it may mean we actually deserve what we get.

I fear for our country if

I fear for our country if the Republicans get in again. Palin is pro-life, against Roe vs Wade, and would try to ban books in libraries. Our country would go back to the time before woman's sufferage, when back street abortions were common and a woman's place was ruled by the church. In other words, the dark ages. Woe be to the United States if the Republicans are put into presidential office for the next four years. This barbie doll of the Republican party if one big joke. Vote Obama/Biden!!!

The corporate-controlled

The corporate-controlled debates insures that the uninformed citizen is never informed of what really matters, or what really goes on behind the show.

Watching Sarah Palin, even

Watching Sarah Palin, even at her best, it is impossible to imagine how she could function effectively as president of the United States. But then, she wouldn't have to. She would have many people eager to guide her, just as George W. Bush has been guided by Dick Cheney, Donald Rumsfeld, Richard Perle, Paul Wolfowitz, and many other neoconservatives. Her ignorance and naivete, not to mention her eagerness to please, would make her easy to guide into all sorts of adventures: more preemptive wars, more tax breaks for rich people, more Clarence Thomases and Antonin Scalias, another John Bolton at the United Nations, more financial benefits for our generation's robber barons. It is not Sarah Palin's lack of knowledge and judgment that we should worry about; it is the political and social views of those who would be directing her policies and actions in the Oval Office. Don't think for a moment that the people who brought our country to its knees in the last eight years are giving up or going away. They are not. If the McCain-Palin ticket is elected, they will be right there, behind the elected leaders, Steve Schmidt will be sitting right where Karl Rove sat for most of the Bush administration. This is the real danger of a McCain-Palin election: four or eight more years of shadow government by people who don't believe in democracy,.

Rarely does one experience

Rarely does one experience such a wealth of obfuscation as was so shamelessly demonstrated by Sarah Palin in the "Debate." A master of unintelligible, convoluted, incomplete, run-on sentences, she nonetheless managed to appear competent to some viewers. It is terrifying to acknowledge the right of these same viewers to vote in November.

I think it's pretty scary

I think it's pretty scary when I know about our country's economics and foreign policies than the Vice Presidential candidate does. This cutsie performance of Mrs Palin during the so-called debate proved to me that she is ONLY qualified to be a candidate in a beauty contest. My Independent vote will go to the Democratic ticket this November 4th.

Gwen Ifill blew it, BAD. A

Gwen Ifill blew it, BAD. A poodle could have moderated that "debate" better. Just tape the questions to the poodle and let one of the candidates ignore them and give sound bites and zerox copies of previous campaign speeches. Now we have Tom Brokaw to look forward to. Ugg.

First, Ms. Ifill wasn't

First, Ms. Ifill wasn't aggressive enough in controlling the debate. She should have insisted that Sarah answer the questions, especially after she (Sarah) came out and made her announcement that she wasn't going to following the rules of the debate. Second, Sarah was talking much and saying NOTHING! If she didn't plan to follow the DEBATE rules, she should have not agreed to participate in this extremely important event. She stook to her script and sounded like a fool. More important, winks and home town talk are not cute when I'm waiting to here about the security of my savings, retirement/economy, foreclosures, healthcare, etc. Out of all the competent women in the world that could have been in this position, who know the constitution, who are not afraid to DEBATE, who know the duties of Vice President, why select Sarah with her grating voice. Third, every woman's not a "hockey mom", many women don't have children AND I am ECSTATIC that Senator Biden nipped her use of using "mavericks" when she referred to herself and McCain (McPain). Why is McCain considered a war hero? If it is because he was a POW, doesn't that mean that every POW is a hero? Finally, stay focused people!! McCain and Palin NEVER address the issues; they are too busy trying to smear Senator Obama and Sarah's too busy trying to be cute.

At worst, I can only see her

At worst, I can only see her succeeding John McCain after his inevitable PTSD meltdown, followed by her starting a global nuclear war because Jesus needs one to come back. At best, she has a top-level meeting with Vlad Putin, he respects her more because she isn't experienced, like "Just me" has suggested, but then when he realizes she's a moron, he talks her into signing Alaska back over to Russian control, and then Alaska is spared the effort of succeeding from the Union. It's all good, see? -Then the oil conglomerates can all go suck up to Vlad, and we can get on with running this country entirely on alternative energy, which we could have done years ago, but for the oil companies. Let the Russians piss off the Arab world through trying to rob them of their oil. Let them be the bad guys for a while. One side-note: I will never forgive Barack Obama for not making peace with Hillary Clinton, and getting her in for VP. That could have been the most crushing defeat ever suffered in a national debate, ever. Hillary and Sarah, with no kid gloves, no sexism excuse, no need to treat each other with special gender considerations. Just the political debate version of an Alaskan moose going into a brush chipper. You have deprived us of a spectacle worthy of the vilest days of the Roman arena, Senator Obama. Another thing. Y'all are already ginning up to thrash those ignorant rednecks for voting in McCain/Palin, just like I heard an earful of after the 04 debacle. News flash! Gore won. Kerry won. and Obama is going to win. The problem is not the rednecks, they probably know which side their bread is buttered on as well as any of you, and just because someone talks funny doesn't necessarily mean they're stupid. Likewise, college degrees do not necessarily confer intelligence. Look at W. Hell, look at Sarah. No, the problem is not one of insufficient intelligence or self-interest, the problem is that far too many of us are so delusional, so incurious, so lazy, and so Luddite, that we refuse to see how the electronic voting system has been used to ROB two Democrats of the White House, and probably will be again. All this debate hoopla serves as the ultimate smoke and mirrors for the puppet-masters like Rove. Are you ready to start rioting and screaming when the exit polls don't match the vote "count" within about a single percent? -Or will you bury your head in the sand for another 4 years of whinging? Yeah, I thought so. Cheer up, people! Having the Palins in the white house should be good for more tabloid shenanigans than the British Royals. It's all good. -Except for the nuclear war part.

the author made one

the author made one mistake.......
America is on paper bankrupt. We just haven't run out of suckers to borrow from the fund our profligacy. Once the world decides we're a subprime applicant, the whole thing comes down..... Welcome to the new Feudalism!!!!!!!
Go Reagan Revolution Go!

Please understand that 9 11

Please understand that 9 11 was an economic on the symbol of american wealth. The rah-rah washington politicians would have us think we are winning against the evil-doers. Wrong? Are we bankrupt yet ? When the ussr fell it was because of its economy. Thatcher, Reagan, Lech(solidarity in Poland), and Pope John Paul all pressured moscow on many different fronts. The Reagan military spending spelled economic disaster in Russia. Does Sarah P understand the USA is repeating history? Of coarse not. McPalin is a bad choice. Bush with lipstick.
