Biden Teaches Palin the Meaning of "Maverick"

St. Louis - On the night after the U.S. Senate endorsed a $700 billion plan to bail out collapsing banks, and on the day before the U.S. House will be asked to do the same, the economy was going to be the central issue of the first and only vice presidential debate.

Neither Sarah Palin nor Joe Biden wanted to be on the wrong side of the divide between what a previous vice presidential contender famously -- and accurately -- described as "two Americas."

So it was the chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee and the sitting governor of the nation's physically-largest state spent the evening talking about buying gas "with a guy named Joe" and rallying "Joe Six Packs (and) hockey moms across the nation."

Biden and Palin both buffed their blue-collar credentials. They told stories of personal woe. Biden referenced tough times on streets of Scranton and Wilmington. Palin recalled going without health-care coverage. Biden's voice caught as he spoke of caring as a single parent for an injured child.

For the most part, however, the candidates eschewed personality profiling in favor of full-throated denunciations of all things Wall Street.

"If you need any more proof positive of how bad the economic theories have been, this excessive deregulation, the failure to oversee what was going on, letting Wall Street run wild, I don't think you needed any more evidence than what you see now," griped Biden.

"Darn right it was the predator lenders, who tried to talk Americans into thinking that it was smart to buy a $300,000 house if we could only afford a $100,000 house. There was deception there, and there was greed and there is corruption on Wall Street. And we need to stop that," grumbled Palin.

If they walked the same stylistic line when it came to trying to out-populist one another, however, the candidates divided on the issues.

And that is how Biden prevailed.

Let's be clear that Palin did not crash and burn as her most ardent detractors anticipated - or, at the least, hoped - she would. Yes, the governor rambled at times, and she had no comebacks at those moments when Biden directly challenged the validity of her over-the-top claims about Democratic presidential nominee Barack Obama's Senate voting record. But Palin gave Republican spin doctors enough material - mainly in the form of folksy one-liners -- so that they could cheer her "success" without sounding entirely ridiculous.

The anticipated gravitas gap was on display, especially when the senior senator's encyclopedic knowledge of foreign and domestic policy - and of Republican presidential nominee John McCain's voting record - was contrasted with Palin's encyclopedic knowledge of tax codes in Wasilla and her desperate clinging to the word "maverick."

But Palin was not the moose-in-the-headlights that America saw talking with CBS News anchor Katie Couric. She was generally on message, and the message was "us-against-them" populism.

Asked by moderator Gwen Ifill about the condition of the economy, Palin responded, "You know, I think a good barometer here, as we try to figure out has this been a good time or a bad time in America's economy, is go to a kid's soccer game on Saturday, and turn to any parent there on the sideline and ask them, 'How are you feeling about the economy?' And I'll bet you, you're going to hear some fear in that parent's voice, fear regarding the few investments that some of us have in the stock market. Did we just take a major hit with those investments?"

That was suitably "of the people" - especially coming from a rather wealthy suburban Republican.

Unfortunately for Palin, Biden recognized an opening, and he took it.

"(It) was two Mondays ago (that) John McCain said at 9 o'clock in the morning that the fundamentals of the economy were strong. Two weeks before that, he said… we've made great economic progress under George Bush's policies," the senator began. "Nine o'clock, the economy was strong. Eleven o'clock that same day, two Mondays ago, John McCain said that we have an economic crisis. That doesn't make John McCain a bad guy, but it does point out he's out of touch. Those folks on the sidelines knew that two months ago."

Again and again, when Palin went populist, Biden went after McCain.

Take the point at which Palin was ready to lead the rabble to the barricades.

"(Let's commit ourselves just every day American people, Joe Six Pack, hockey moms across the nation, I think we need to band together and say never again," she announced. "Never will we be exploited and taken advantage of again by those who are managing our money and loaning us these dollars. We need to make sure that we demand from the federal government strict oversight of those entities in charge of our investments and our saving…"

Biden did not ridicule his opponent's pretense.

Rather, he suggested that, while Palin could talk all she liked about rallying the masses against Wall Street, she would have a hard time getting John McCain on board for the revolution.

"Two years ago, Barack Obama warned about the sub-prime mortgage crisis. John McCain said shortly after that in December he was surprised there was a sub-prime mortgage problem. John McCain, while Barack Obama was warning about what we had to do, was literally giving an interview to The Wall Street Journal saying that 'I'm always for cutting regulations.' We let Wall Street run wild. John McCain and he's a good man, but John McCain thought the answer is that tried and true Republican response: deregulate, deregulate," Biden told Palin, and America.

"So what you had is… overwhelming deregulation. You had actually the belief that Wall Street could self-regulate itself. And while Barack Obama was talking about reinstating those regulations, John on 20 different occasions in the previous year and a half called for more deregulation. As a matter of fact, John recently wrote an article in a major magazine saying that he wants to do for the health care industry deregulate it and let the free market move like he did for the banking industry."

    That was an ouch moment.

And it got more painful for Palin when, toward the end of the debate, Biden took the word the Republican clung to so fervently Thursday night - "maverick" - away from her, and from John McCain.

"Let's talk about the maverick John McCain is. And, again, I love him. He's been a maverick on some issues, but he has been no maverick on the things that matter to people's lives," Biden carefully explained. "He voted four out of five times for George Bush's budget, which put us a half a trillion dollars in debt this year and over $3 trillion in debt since he's got there. He has not been a maverick in providing health care for people. He has voted against -- he voted including another 3.6 million children in coverage of the existing health care plan, when he voted in the United States Senate. He's not been a maverick when it comes to education. He has not supported tax cuts and significant changes for people being able to send their kids to college. He's not been a maverick on the war. He's not been a maverick on virtually anything that genuinely affects the things that people really talk about around their kitchen table. Can we send -- can we get Mom's MRI? Can we send Mary back to school next semester? We can't -- we can't make it. How are we going to heat the … house this winter? He voted against even providing for what they call LIHEAP, for assistance to people, with oil prices going through the roof in the winter. So maverick he is not on the important, critical issues that affect people at that kitchen table."

A Republican named Sarah Palin tried to convince Americans that she was running on a populist ticket.

But Joe Biden reminded the voters sitting at those kitchen tables, in those small houses with big mortgages, that the man who heads that ticket, a Republican named John McCain, is not on their side.

And, in so doing, Biden did not merely score a debating point. He did what a vice presidential candidate is supposed to do. He helped the man who heads his ticket, a Democrat named Barack Obama, stake a significantly stronger claim on the presidency.

I couldn't have said it

I couldn't have said it better! Why did the media embrace Palin afterwards? They were like proud parents of a five year old who's riding a bicycle for the first time without training wheels. " GOOD FOR HER!! YAY, LOOK, SHE'S DOING IT, SHE'S GOING TO MAKE IT ACROSS THE PARKING LOT!" Great. I'm happy for her. But a responsible parent wouldn't let her anywhere near the freeway.

Palin scares me less than

Palin scares me less than the high percentage of voters who seem to want to elect "just folk" they would be comfortable sitting with at their kitchen table! I for one want someone bright, well educated, with an excellent memory. It would help if this person had always been enthralled with American history and politics as well as foreign affairs! This person should also have a strong ego, the ability to judge people, and a dispassionate eye for what is "the possible" to achieve. Needless to say, I admire Hillary and will vote for Obama!

Was she wired? Why did she

Was she wired? Why did she keep looking down, writing while smiling inappropriately? What was she listening to? It did not seem to be Biden, as her facial expressions (and "answers") were not related to his remarks. Watch it on C span.

Now, more than ever, I wish

Now, more than ever, I wish that the Clinton / Obama camps had pulled their collective sensory organ clusters out of their ventral orifices, made peace, and brought Hillary on as VP. Yes, Biden did a fine job, considering how delicately he had to handle The Snow Princess of The North to keep the conservative media from screaming like the nancies they are about how that brute was abusing their latest darling. HOWEVER, could you just imagine Hillary up there with Sarah? No excuse of sexism, gloves off, just the kind of brass-knuckle politics that we saw Ms. Clinton was fully capable of. No quarter. No mercy. Just moose gobbets all over the stage. Ahh, what might have been!...

I was appalled that Gwen

I was appalled that Gwen Ifill gave Palin such a free pass, never called her on unanswered questions, the questions themselves being inadequately intensive. Did she hold back because the GOP had cut up rough about her projected book and consequently bent over backward to be "fair"? Dismal after Katie Couric's brilliant interview. Followup is everything and Ifill really dropped the ball. I usually love her work, but this time it made for a "debate" which utterly failed to reveal the true Palin: breathtakingly ignorant.

NOTICE HOW Sarah Palin

NOTICE HOW Sarah Palin almost stumbled in her admitting to the audience that it just goes to show that she's not a Washington insider... I think she said it because she knew her patriotically-worded but simplified answers that she was giving weren't getting the impact she wanted from the audience. She also made that veiled apology because she got an immediate taste of how Joe Biden, a skilled debater, has a detailed command of the domestic and foreign policy-making historical facts that she isn't completely aware of. Well... (chauvinistically-speaking) it's not really her fault after all, since self-proclaimed "soccer moms" like herself, aren't big on DC politics -- they're big on after-bath face and body lotion!

"Biden's voice caught as he

"Biden's voice caught as he spoke of caring as a single parent for an injured child". Although Senator Biden's performance (I hate that word in this context; however, it is appropriate for what Governor Palin did last night) was excellent throughout, and should convince any reasonably thinking person as to which is the better ticket, I believe this was the point at which Senator Biden clinched the debate.

He was fab, she was not.

He was fab, she was not. Glad to see we'll have such a nifty VP in Biden!

Palin is so very ill

Palin is so very ill informed and out of touch. It is very frightening that she could be elected to the office of Vice President. She is self focused and has created chaos in her own state. She lies and denies to cover up her mistakes. She is actually a puppet for McCain and his political ring. They have come into Alaska and with the intent to cover up and run the state. This is very scary, very scary. I hope that the American voters are wise enough to see through her folksy glitz. If not, we are in trouble as a Nation!

Sarah Palin did will on the

Sarah Palin did will on the economy, but not good on wars in lraq and Afghanistan.

that went beyond folksy.

that went beyond folksy. Fellas, I think she was flirting with us! http://thetruthburns.wordpress.com/2008/10/03/was-palin-flirting-with-every-man-in-the-us-or-just-me/

I enjoyed Biden's humor.

I enjoyed Biden's humor. Palin's bite which comes off rabid at times, was discounted often by humor and direct contradiction of policy. I too was wishing for the fall on her face gaffs but... I have no wish to see her humiliate herself. Just no wish to see us (the electorate) humiliate there selves by electing the McCain Palin ticket. Good job JOE

Palin should have worn a

Palin should have worn a cheerleader outfit with a big "M" on it for "her team, "The McCain Mavericks," because that's the shallow depth of gravitas she exhibited. By golly gee whiz, did that cutesy wink-and-head-cock combination work for you in high school, Sarah? It was the soft bigotry of low expectations at its worst. But here's the scary part: she adamantly repeated that her hero, John McCain, knows how to win a war. That's what I'm afraid of -- he wants to prove to the world, his father, and his grandfather, that he can win a war, and by gosh, by golly, ya betcha, he'd make gosh-darned sure he'd START another war just so he could show us! The ticket of Reckless and Clueless is dangerous.

Why hasn't anyone commented

Why hasn't anyone commented on the humor injected by Biden when "a bridge to nowhere" to emphasize the point he was making?

Folksy does not qualify one

Folksy does not qualify one for VP of the USA. Think about Sarah Palin teaching a civics or social studies class, would you, the student, think you learned something?... anything? Would she or could she answer your questions? Palin may be a skilled campaigner/debater, but she doesn't have the knowledge or experience to be a civics teacher, let alone be anywhere near the oval office.

Unquestioned allegience to

Unquestioned allegience to Israel. One of the issues nobody writes about is how Biden and Palin both perfectly articulated their party's platform on Israel. Israel is treating Palestinians worse than white South Africa treated blacks under apartheid. That this occurs with the full endorsement of America and is unquestioned is not lost on the rest of the world. A world that is able to see the contradiction without our emotional knee-jerk reactions. A world that understands this is symbolic of the powerful abusing their position over the have-nots and that it is the world's most dangerous issue. That neither side could put any amount of intelligence into their answer to this issue shows how far down the rabbit hole the Israel lobby has taken us.

Tired of mediocre! Why do

Tired of mediocre! Why do Americans keep accepting someone who is just average. We applaud someone for barely making it. Why do we do that? Sarah Palin is a joke. She didn't answer any questions. All she did was talk in talking points. She disrespected the moderator by telling her she was not going to answer her questions. Are we that stupid to believe that this woman is ready to lead us? Is this the best that the United States of America can offer?

I am grateful that NICHOLS

I am grateful that NICHOLS has begun to leave behind the MSM spin on the VP debate by actually analyzing what was said instead of what was expected. Though even to call the spectacle a debate is misleading when Biden’s detailed programs for dealing with the financial problems are met with Palin’s endlessly repeated promises of “We’re gonna end the greed and corruption on Wall Street” without so much as a nod in the direction of how she and McSame were going to clean the Aegean stables. I watched parts of event on PBS; I could not take 90 min of Palin's evasions, obfuscations, distortions, and untruths, let alone her cutesy late 50s-early 60s sitcom expressions and body language, without a break now and again. All but one commentator after the show seemed to be pretzling themselves to find something positive to say about Palin, though they were at ease praising Biden for what he actually said and how he said it. Someone in our little group of viewers suggested that they were soft pedaling her performance because they didn’t want to be too hard on the “little lady”, that is, as hard as they would have been on a serious candidate regardless of gender. The exception, whose name I unfortunately can't remember, characterized Palin being VP as "Gidget goes to Washington", a comparison I will honor by repeating it without restraint. Palin entered this debate with such well foundedly low reputation that she was repeatedly said to "hold her own" by not being as godawful as she was expected to be. But "hold one's own" means either "bear up, manage, cope" or "match up to, equal". The constant talk of Palin holding her own is accurate in the first meaning in that she did not make as much a fool of herself as she had in the infamous interviews. But using that locution also, obviously incorrectly, suggests that she showed herself to be as knowledgeable, thoughtful, nuanced, articulate, down to earth, human, and vulnerable as Biden did. The latter few were a surprise to me; I said to friends sharing the occasion that I'd perhaps come to like and respect Biden more than Obama because of last night's performance. No way a living breathing thinking feeling human being can be matched by an oversized, programmed, anachronistic Barbie doll.

Why is nobody mentioning

Why is nobody mentioning that they (Biden and Palin) are both unabashed cheerleaders for Israel ? I think that David Icke is right, we see what appear to be individuals up on a stage debating each other, but in reality they are all just different looking mouthpieces of a group overmind. . . didn't anyone notice the energy associated with that little exchange ? If there were a Palin-Biden (oops I mean Biden-Palin) ticket, it would win.

What should make us all

What should make us all terrified was Palin's statements affirming that she agreed with Dick Cheney's criminal view of the purportedly expansive powers of the Vice President in the legislative branch. Not only that, but she said that John McCain wants her to take on a role falsely attributed to constitutional authority that would give her even "more power over the Senate." If this nightmare scenario should happen, the key difference between Cheney and Palin will be that unlike Cheney, Palin is so ignorant that she will be reduced to a mere puppet to enhance the power of McCain and other Neocons. Perhaps it is appropriate that the person who would use this power to complete Bush's program of eliminating protections that have been around since the days of the Magna Carta will be named King John.

No, but I'm going to talk

No, but I'm going to talk about something else ! I didn't know you could say that in a debate. Totally refuse to answer the question. I've been watching the morning news shows and everyone is commending her for not falling down on the stage and giving her debate credit for that. Are you kidding. She obviously was schooled to give campaign speeches when she couldn't answer the questions, or change the subject completely. I'm not hearing anyone calling her on that. She's getting away with murder. Biden has done over 30 press conferences to her 2 disasters and he should have called her on it. Or, Gwen should have. Why is everyone afraid of confronting this crystal princess?

The part of the debate that

The part of the debate that interested me most was when Sarah Palin chided Biden for looking backward instead of forward. I guess the country can just forget that we are involved in 2 major wars and our economy has just gone all to hell. Being that I was a teacher for 25 years, I graded the debate on academic merits and came up with a score (out of a hundred) with Joe Biden getting about 61, and Sarah Palin getting 35. Sarah Palin did not answer most of the questions which automatically knocks 50 points off. She made 1 factual mistake -5, and was confused on one question in which she answered backward and did not correct herself. -10

The debate was a disaster

The debate was a disaster for Palin. Tina Fey doing Palin on SNL has more gravitas. Think one-heart-beat-away from Leader of the Free World!
