Field of Ruins

The Americans will recover one way or another from the present financial crisis, whatever remedy they finally come up with between Wall Street and Congress during the next few days. They'll recover because they still make up a nation that never counts itself defeated, that is still inventive, determined, and powerful.

But something of the crisis will persist...

And that will be something extremely serious for the "empire in spite of itself," as the United States has frequently been designated. An empire which has seen its reputation, influence and real power in the world crumble over the last eight years. And seen disappear most significantly, the degree of trust its administration and its institutions have always enjoyed, in spite of what people said about them in the darkest hours of the 20th century: those of the bloodiest wars and the worst economic difficulties, of triumphant dictatorships and abysmal monetary devaluations.

Of all American institutions, the dollar will have been the most respected, whether in the hushed recesses of central banks managing open countries, or under the counter in closed countries where the lower class had no right to meddle with this dollar. So, this greenback, this symbol of the planet's most solid and reliable economy, is now washed out, pared down, trampled upon.

The idea of uncertainty will - from now on and always - be attached to it.

This frightening crack in the American financial edifice comes after the failure of its military apparatus, the slow collapse of which insidiously began, one may perhaps consider, in Korea. After the erosion of the United States' scientific and technological hegemony - which, in fact, leaves American students indifferent, while Asian youth gobble up the molecule and the algorithm. And after the great disenchantment with its diplomacy, to the point we see Nicolas Sarkozy's France cheerfully resume the role it has always considered its own since the time of Cardinal de Richelieu!

The United States' only intact power today remains its culture. But for how much longer? Culture is not a self-sufficient creature that can forever remain in better health than the society that feeds it.

Perhaps American culture has had the luck to remain almost outside the reach of politics. For it is politics, in particular the politics inflicted on the country for the last eight years, that is the source of the present evils. And those politics, far more than Wall Street's lure for money; or the incompetence of the military apparatus; or the decline of the universities; or the generalized abdication of individual responsibility.

Last week, in front of the UN General Assembly during his televised address to the nation, we saw a George W. Bush suddenly aged by 10 years. He had the look of someone who staggers, shattered, in a field of ruins.

He now, inevitably, knows what his place in History will be.

Spawned in America, film, comics, and jazz were our cultural contributions. Other nations have long ago taken our popular art seriously and the US is no longer the sole contributor. It took the governor who succeeded bush in texas two terms to just fix what he broke. I remain appalled that the free fall of the twin towers could be seen as anything but a professional demolition job. If we the people can't grasp that elementary physics, I doubt there will be a space for america to return to. The rest of the world is moving on- without us.

America is a great country.

America is a great country. By and large, the people are kind, hard-working and honest. They believe in their right to liberty and the pursuit of happiness, and believe in the right of their fellow citizens to the same. They are even willing to extend those rights to immigrants. What went wrong? They assumed that their leaders in government and business were just as kind, hard-working, and honest as most of them were, and therefore gave those rogues their full support. Now that the truth is out, their support will change. America will be back, but it will take time.

"I do agree with most of your Mon, 10/06/2008 - 22:51 — Juliana O'Cayze (not verified)" I am so glad that you said it, Juliana. Right On!

I do agree with most of your

I do agree with most of your arguments, Mister Roy, but please -- American Culture? -- In what forgotten corner of time/space in your beautiful country have you been interned all these years? Prey tell, what American culture could you be referring to? ... So sorry to rain on your optimistic, wishful thinking parade: fact is, and sad to say, the culture you may be speaking of -- Jazz, Blues, Folk, modern dance, Rock, Spirituals, etc.-- is something long gone into either oblivion or the caves of recalcitrant, anachronistic recluses. Nowadays what we've been left with, culture-wise by and large, is the blind cult of stupidity: vapid stuff of mental/spiritual degradation along the lines of American Idol, National-Christianism, drooling-starlet gossip and so on. Thanks for your good will, however.

Everything Bush did as

Everything Bush did as president was to put extraordinary amounts of money into the hands of the power elite. He did this at the expense of America by running it into the ground. If Obama wins, yes, we will pick ourselves up by our bootstraps and recover, maybe better than before. The hole that has been dug is deep, and it will require sacrifice and hard work to recover.

The demise of America is

The demise of America is greatly exaggerated. It fell for 10 years in the 1930s to come back the most powerful nation on earth. It has something no other nations have. It is solely made up of migrants who have found there and fought for what was lacking in their countries of origin. It will be back on its feet way before Europe, Russia and others find their way out of the tunnel. Look how Europe is clueless these days about this financial crisis. Merkel is even pretty comical about it. BTW I am not waving the flag, I am not even a Yank.

America's blood has become

America's blood has become thin and sitting on our comfortable chairs watching TV has made our spine weak. Because for those with eyes to see and understanding of our history know what has to be done. It will be at great cost. We only have to ask the question, is it worth it. Not just for ourselves, but our children and theirs also. Awake form one of the many dreams that have been spun for you, to make you inactive and complacent. The light may hurt your eyes, but we need our combined vision to make things great again for all Americans, no matter what the cost. To do nothing would, in the long run cost the most.

finally, Bush cannot hide

finally, Bush cannot hide the truth, that he and his band of fools have reduced this country to a shell of what it was with Clinton. now, may we have a revolution in America a new era, new energy, do away with the fascist ways of the post-9/11 bush way of gov't. do away with corporate control and turn back to local business...
