Anchorage, Alaska - Seven aides to Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin have reversed course and agreed to testify in an investigation into whether the Republican vice presidential nominee abused her powers by firing a commissioner who refused to dismiss her former brother-in-law.

There is no indication, however, that Palin or her husband will now agree to testify in the legislative inquiry, which has dogged her for the past several months and could hurt John McCain in the final weeks of the presidential race.

Palin, a first-term governor, is the focus of a legislative investigation into her firing of Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan a year after she, her husband and key advisers began questioning him about getting rid of a state trooper who had gone through a nasty divorce with her sister.

Monegan says he was dismissed because he wouldn't fire the governor's former brother-in-law, but Palin contends he was dismissed for insubordination. McCain operatives called Monegan a "rogue" who repeatedly tried to work outside normal channels for requesting money.

Lawmakers subpoenaed seven state employees to testify in the inquiry but they challenged those subpoenas. After a judge rejected that challenge last week, the employees decided to testify, Alaska Attorney General Talis Colberg said.

Democratic state Sen. Hollis French, who is managing the investigation, said that, following the court ruling, he again asked Palin and her husband, Todd, whether they planned to testify.

"We've had no response," French said Sunday.

Palin says the legislative inquiry has become too political and she believes that only the state's personnel board should investigate the firing. Todd Palin has agreed to speak with investigators for that panel but not for the legislative inquiry.

The governor has the authority to fire the members of the personnel board.

Alaska's Supreme Court, meanwhile, is considering whether to block the findings of the legislative inquiry. The high court scheduled arguments for Wednesday over whether the case is being manipulated to hurt Palin before Election Day on Nov. 4.

The decision by the state employees to testify will not affect that appeal, said Kevin Clarkson, a lawyer for five Republican lawmakers who brought that challenge.

The independent investigator conducting the probe plans to turn over his conclusions on the case by next Friday to the Legislative Council, the body that authorized it.

"... was dismissed because

"... was dismissed because he wouldn't fire the governor's former brother-in-law, but Palin contends he was dismissed for insubordination." Doesn't refusing to do as he's told by the governor constitute insubordination? McCain operatives called Monegan a "rogue" who repeatedly tried to work outside normal channels for requesting money. And as the earlier commenter asked: Why doesn't the McCain camp (which is handling this cover-up) refer to this guy as a "Maverick"?

The original Maverick was a

The original Maverick was a Texas lawyer in the mid 1800's who didn't brand his cattle, so, if you found an unbranded cow walking around, usually some young raggedy son of a bitch whose mind had been blown by the system, off on his own, useless to the herd, that would be a "Maverick". And, by definition, the implied property of a Texas lawyer. At least until another superior being branded it and took possession for slaughter. Not really a claim to fame. Perhaps McPalin is using the term to refer to James Garner's best tv roll in the 1950's as a rovin' gambler. More likely it's the Tom Cruise movie role as the Top Gun Pilot. But in the vernacular, he used to be sort of a republican maverick, but he "sold out" to the religious right, as he admitted on Jon Stewart's Daily Show, and, in stages, he sold out to the GOP, one hoop at a time, before they would grudgingly support him. Sarah Palin is LUDICROUS. Her unblinkin' eagerness to have her hands on the largest army in the history of God's good earth, "don'cha know our reward's in Heaven", makes her a character worthy of a modern update of the CLASSIC movie, "Dr. Strangelove", which is all about strange people in positions of power.

The first definition of

The first definition of "maverick" in The American Heritage® Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition copyright © 1992 by Houghton Mifflin Company, says: "An unbranded range animal, especially a calf that has become separated from its mother, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it." My rewording of that definition to fit its current use by the 'McPalin' ticket is: "An unwitting politician, especially one that has become separated from its morals and ethics, traditionally considered the property of the first person who brands it."

Here in Arizona there's an old cowboy saying about big talkers, All hat and no pony.

THANK GOD! Finally, some

THANK GOD! Finally, some sanity in an insane situation with an insane choice!!!!! A WRONG CHOICE and the Alaskian folks KNOW THIS WOMAN IS WRONG to be near the Nuclear War Numbers and the Red Phone STOP THE MADNESS!!!

If any of us, as citizens,

If any of us, as citizens, refused to testify or appear based on a subpoena, our asses would be collected and thrown in jail for contempt of court, right??? Enough already! We all live by the same letter of the law. Maybe I won't pay my next parking ticket, because collecting revenue that way, is politically motivated. Clearly, as much as she is trying to portray herself as just a regular Josephine 6-pack, she is power hungry and willing to use it for personal gain, glory and in this case, for a personal vendetta. Don't believe the 80% approval ratings you see....I was born in AK and most of our friends don't know where that # comes from. On the job training, for the VP of the United States?? I don't think so.

Everyone should read what

Everyone should read what was in Sunday's NY TImes and where the word Maverick comes from. An important read. Palin and McCain ain't no Mavericks! http://www.nytimes.com/2008/10/05/weekinreview/05schwartz.html?sq=maverick&st=cse&scp=1&pagewanted=print

She should be on trial for

She should be on trial for fraud after receiving $16, 941 payment for 300 days per diem expense while in actual fact being at her home. If she was a Democratic governor the Karl Rove machine would be having a field day, but when a Republican steals it is OK. And like the money for the bridge to nowhere, Palin has no intention of repaying the $17,000 she obtained by fraud.

That should be "bein'

That should be "bein' quotin" and "sayin'"

It's good pratice for Sarah

It's good pratice for Sarah to B.S. her way out of what is obviously a personel vindeta against her former brother in law . After all, she's trying to follow in the footsteps of the sneakyist vice we've ever had . Pretty big shoes to fill . When will we ever be able to trust anything any politician says ?

What's the difference

What's the difference between Sarah Palin and the proverbial pit-bull? At least the dog knows that it's not qualified to run for Vice President. It appears as though one man's rogue is another man's maverick...

A real maverick would never

A real maverick would never go around proclaiming they were a maverick.

Sarah Palin has a reputation

Sarah Palin has a reputation for getting even with those who dare to cross her. I feel that she also abused her power when she brought her newborn infant to work with her and had a crib in her office. I would imagine the number of female Alaskan government employees who are allowed to bring their infants to work with them is zero. It appears that she also elects to work from home a lot, and I don't believe the governor should be hanging out at home except on rare occasions, weekends, and holidays like the majority of us.

Does this sound like Dick

Does this sound like Dick Cheney - or what?!! And she thinks the vice president should have more powers?!! Wake up, America! We don't like what we consider dictatorships in other countries. But dictatorship in the country of Alaska - that's OK? And a dictator in the form of a soccer mom who does dictator things still looks and smells like a dictator. Wasn't the McBush reason for starting a war on Iraq to get rid of a dictator? What's wrong with the McPain picture, anyway?

Is a "rogue" the same as a

Is a "rogue" the same as a "maverick?"

Shouldn't the brave and

Shouldn't the brave and maverick pitbull with lipstick soccer mom being quoting George Bush on this one and saying "Bring it on"?
