Truthout to Congress: Stop Funding Endless War

On the war's eighth anniversary, we urge our president, our Congress and our country to cut the military purse strings and reject an escalation of violence in Afghanistan.

Yesterday, the Senate passed $128 billion for the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. This appropriation could fuel a "surge" in deployment of US troops to Afghanistan; Gen. Stanley McChrystal recommends an increase of up to 40,000 soldiers.

If the American people had voted on this latest defense spending bill, they might well have rejected the funding. Most polls find that a definitive majority of Americans oppose an escalation of combat troops in Afghanistan. A recent McClatchy survey found that only 35 percent favored sending more troops.

This widespread public skepticism is understandable, given the war's mounting fatality rate. In August, one American died in Afghanistan every 14 hours. September also took a heavy toll, and 17 US soldiers have already died in Afghanistan in October.

President Obama has lately shown well-warranted caution in preparing to deploy more US troops, and remains wary of McChrystal's calls for a quick escalation. Still, he has not wavered in his support for the war.

"If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans," the president said less than two months ago. "So this is not only a war worth fighting. This is fundamental to the defense of our people."

In the lead-up to last year's election, we hoped that Obama's hawkish rhetoric on Afghanistan was simply a savvy campaign choice, intended to capture the votes of "moderates," who feared the prospect of a soft-on-terror commander in chief. Now we wonder whether Obama has succumbed to his own warlike words.

Though the Obama administration has rebranded the "war on terror" as "Overseas Contingency Operations" (or - to distance the name even further from its brutal reality - "OCO"), its ill-conceived mission and methods remain the same.

Truthout calls on the Obama administration and Congress to embrace a firm shift in mindset and engage in the critical thinking necessary to end the war by peaceful means.

How to prompt this transformation? Last month, Congressman Dennis Kucinich suggested a logical first step toward halting the military machine in Afghanistan: cutting its purse strings.

"If the Obama administration refuses to bring this war to an end, then Congress should use the power of the purse, granted by the Constitution, to end the war and bring our troops home," Kucinich said.

As Congress debates the much-needed health care reform legislation, Republicans argue that we cannot afford a massive new spending bill with the economy in its current condition. They neglect to mention the string of gargantuan war appropriations bills that have plagued our budget for eight years. America needs to take care of our needs at home before we continue to pour billions of dollars into an unwinnable war.

As members of the Senate and House go into conference to decide the fate of the defense spending bill in the coming weeks - and as they consider additional war funding for 2011 over the next few months - we hope they will recognize the futility of escalating violence and the urgency of searching for peaceful means to end the conflict.

President Obama has called the Afghan conflict a "war of necessity." We entreat Congress and the administration to reframe the official story on Afghanistan and reveal the true necessity at hand: to stop funding directionless violence and bring the troops home.

What about that oil pipeline

What about that oil pipeline running through Afghanistan to Europe? Come on, the Iraq war was about getting control of the oil resources (mission accomplished) and it must go northwest in the pipeline. Why is this never, ever mentioned? Control of Afghanistan is a n ongoing need for big money and power brokers. The military is out there protecting its own fuel source, with an endless war. Obama will not stop this, although he may settle into a status quo position and take credit for not escalating further.

Americans want the war to

Americans want the war to end because of US fatalities? Not because the war is unjust and plain wrong? Typical. "If left unchecked, the Taliban insurgency will mean an even larger safe haven from which al Qaeda would plot to kill more Americans," the president said less than two months ago. Uh, is Bush back in office?

YES!

YES!

Didn't Lemay incinerate 100K

Didn't Lemay incinerate 100K Japanese because of similiar arguments? War of necessity? The corporate press won't mention the no-bid profiteers by name. After the Military clears the occupied lands, by either killing civilians, paying them off, or forcing mass emigration - The "Bechtels" swoop in for another round of profiteering.

The record is crystal clear.

The record is crystal clear. Third world civilian casualties are the bread and butter of the United State's rapacious war machine. This monstrosity requires human bullet and bomb receptacles and it will have them, whether in Afghanistan, Iraq or somewhere else. The nation-states our military is constantly "building" are the graveyards we leave behind everywhere we go.

Bravo!Brava! War is not the

Bravo!Brava! War is not the answer. Great art with the editorial.

Associated Press reports

Associated Press reports today that Al Qaeda has fewer than 100 "core fighters" in Afghanistan today. Yet yesterday, Obama told the National Counterterrorism Center get-together that dismantling Al Qaeda, and like terrorist groups is important because they are "the principal threat to America." $128 billion, that's about a billion dollars per terrorist, while there are also thousands of innocents slaughtered in "collateral damage", and the corporations, technology centers, university departments, and think tanks and contractors haul in millions in profits. I thank Truthout for coming out editorially against an escalation in the Afghan war, and for defunding that war and bringing the troops home.

We do not belong there. We

We do not belong there. We had our chance to chase the bad guys 8 years ago... before King George and Darth Cheney screwed us up. We need to get away from that place and our toxic mentality of trying to win a non-war. The money certainly can be better spent.

Congratulations Truth Out !!

Congratulations Truth Out !! Where is the "Times" be it in Washington or New York. Next month I will double my contribution. We need to keep the pressure on Barack. I believe he is a great and good man, but he is getting a lot of really bad advice and needs a good kick in the ass now and again. TO keep kicking !!!

So Obama wants to bring the

So Obama wants to bring the total global war on terror spending to 1 trillion to prevent another 9-11 which killed 2,973 people. Meanwhile the health care system in the US has caused 45,000 people per year to die according to the Harvard Medical School. I say it would be better to spend the money for health care. Larry

Obama must choose.

Obama must choose. Additional dollars and lives spent on these endless / useless wars, or make the choice to pursue peace and diplomacy. With unemployment, veterans' issues, global climate change, economic and political chaos requiring his and our attention, seems to me the choice should be plain to rational humans. Out of Iraq and Afghanistan now!

Isn't it frustrating how

Isn't it frustrating how Congress can always find money for things that aren't good for the people, like war and corporate welfare, yet health care reform and middle class tax cuts are "too expensive".

$128 billion for war. $0 for

$128 billion for war. $0 for health care for our won citizens. If the voters were asked to choose, I think they would vote for health care for us. Why can't our government see that?

Has the last American

Has the last American soldier who will die in Afghanistan been born yet?

$128billion? For what? If

$128billion? For what? If there are Al Qaeda members in Afghanistan, they are hiding our in caves, mountains, areas where we have no knowledge- not hanging out in the street waiting to be shot by our soldiers. We can spend billions forever, and be no further along. How do we get the House to vote against this appropriation- or is it in the House that it started? (as per the constitution). Do you really think members of Congress read Truthout?

The economy is a shambles,

The economy is a shambles, except for bailed out Wall-Streets and war profiteers. The enormous expense of the endless "war on terror," which has left Bin Laden and his friends at the top of the Saudi government unscathed, has depreciated the value of the work which the rest of us perform. Meanwhile, those wealthy bankers, brokers, and other corporate hacks are getting richer without making any sacrifices such as those by the men and women who have had their lives hijacked for National Guard "tours of duty" that go on forever. This is Indochina all over again: targeting the wrong "enemies" while expanding the theatre of operations without positive result. We need to pull our troops out of Afghanistan NOW, while transferring a decent fraction of operational costs to proxies inside the country. Afghanistan's norm is tribal warfare; we should play those interests against one another to keep them too occupied to strike us again. They are not angels, those people who teach their children to use automatic weapons as soon as they can walk. They are not "freedom fighters." Neither are we angels who have a right to impose Christian Dominionism on their war-loving Muslim country and culture. If there is jihad, it is because Washington has been stupid enough to walk right into an obvious trap.

I agree with bringing the

I agree with bringing the troops home. But our politicians will not; they want to rule the world with our blood and money. Everyone should read TRAGEDY and HOPE by Quigley. It is one of the best books about history that I ever read. In it Professor Quigley makes the argument that the Unites States will need to be in endless unwinnable wars, and be forced into a deep depression before the citizens will accept the NEW WORLD ORDER. The book was written in 1976, and is practically a blueprint for for the past 15 years.

To the first responder: Yes,

To the first responder: Yes, Its been about oil from the beginning. Anyone remember "Operation Iraqi Liberation"? That was the name of the Big lie from the last administration. enough of the lies and tell the truth. Oil...

Jared Rodriguez's cartoon is

Jared Rodriguez's cartoon is brilliant. So is Truthout. Thanks for bringing both into my home. I've been writing Mr. Obama weekly since Inauguration Day on his Whitehouse website Contact pulldown--where I also read his weekly message on Saturdays. He's listening to the wrong voices, but, at least, he's pausing before giving General McChrystal "everything" he wants. I also frequently write to my congresspersons. When I do get the seldom response, they tell me I'm wrong; they're smarter and better informed than I; that killing people in the Middle East is necessary. How to hold congressional representatives to their task of representing us? Voting them out (against the moneyed corporate powers that put them there) is impossible. So, as much as I applaud Truthout's message, I think its major premise is flawed. Congress doesn't give a hoot what we the people want. No more than does Mr. Obama. They think they're all so much smarter than the rest of us. Perhaps universal tax resistance would work. Of course there's the problem of "universal", not to mention the difficulty of overcoming the W-2 withholding machinery. The issue is serious enough to enjoin Americans to "fill the jails." 10% of us don't have jobs anyway. Civil Disobedience becomes more and more attractive as the numbers of us "who have nothing to lose" increase everywhere. If the 10% unemployed could somehow join an "army" of tax resistance, it would pinch in the right places.

1.Bring all the troops home

1.Bring all the troops home from both Iraq and Afghanistan. 2.Close all golf courses on all overseas airbases and cut the Airforce budget 3.Transfer all medical personnel (who do not wish to retire) to VA hospitals and hospitals in under-served communities. 4.Transfer all other Naval personnel to the heavily undermanned Coast Guard 5.Transfer all engineer personnel to rebuild America's decaying roadways, sewer lines, bridges and water towers. 6.Transfer remaining service personnel to serve in support of the heavily undermanned Border Patrol OR 7.Provide retraining for remaining service personnel to assist in Step 5. P.S. Return all Cuban land to Cuba.

Everyone should read

Everyone should read Chalmers Johnson's books "Blowback", "The Sorrows of the Empire" and "Nemesis" which fully explain what the aggressor nation, which is sometimes referred to a "Amerika" is up to and why! Obama is turning out to be more white than black! He should go to press conferences in a mime outfit: one half white; one half black.

Politicians do not listen to

Politicians do not listen to the under funded and liberal media. While i completely agree with calling for an end to these wars (and all occupations that the US military is currently engaged in. And believe me there are plenty). I think if you really want to see these wars ended, call your senators (sinisters?) and representatives (reprehensibles?) and demand an end to these wars. Tell them in no uncertain terms, that they will not have another term in office if the peoples views are not listened to and acted upon. Also let them know that you will be marching in the streets if the funding bill goes through and mean it. How long will we sit and wait for these elected officials (Offals?) to cut their own purse strings? They will not do anything if they do not believe that they will lose their power if they do not adhere to our demands. The power is ours, lets take it back. Oh yeah, if you find any corporations that are pushing for this, boycot them. Even if it means you give up your car to boycot ALL Oil companies. There is not a single one that is not pushing for continued violence in the middle eastern region. If you want change make it, don't beg for it!!!

Troops- in their arm

Troops- in their arm chairs-talk about troops-deploy troops -where ever a threat real or imagined-arm chair security -political status- Troops are people- young people - somebody's son or daughter - it makes me mad-have we been had-John, Jill and Joe have to go- if they are killed-send some more - after all its only war - it makes me mad- have we been had.

Got this from another

Got this from another Truthout article "An open letter to President Obama... Please google this: Afghanistan Proposed Pipeline. Look what they been up to!

Thanks to Truthout for

Thanks to Truthout for having the website and for calling for an end to these insane wars. The US has so much blood on its hands, in so many countries. Along with contacting Congress, we can: Pressure the media to stop cheerleading for war; boycott all war profiteer companies and organizations; get the military recruiters and ROTC out of all schools and communities; talk to pro-war, pro-military people and tell them bluntly that war is immoral and that working for the military or for defense contractors is to earn blood money; demand a ban on military video games, align with pacifist religious groups such as Buddhist, Quakers, etc., if you work in a war profiteer job or are a member of the military, quit and quit loudly, always remind people that invading countries and killing people is wrong, only vote for people like Dennis Kucinich who oppose war.

War is profitable. People

War is profitable. People in power have direct and indirect connections to the entities which profit from war and they have NO connection to the people who suffer the devastation of war. You can't appeal to these monsters. Until you make it so that it is no longer profitable for those in power to wage war, there will never be peace. Never.

American taxpayers must

American taxpayers must spend trillions on war but not healthcare, say prominent Republicans in Congress such as John McCain, Mitch McConnell, and John Boehner. Americans have been saying "NO" to this defeatist strategy for almost the entirety of the 21st century, and so far few in Congress or the White House are listening. We are not safer or more secure, Afghanistan is no closer to democracy, Al Qaeda is no less diffusely spread around the globe, Afghan women are no more free, and thousands of America's young men and women are being killed and maimed for no positive outcome! It's ridiculous and a massive waste that benefits who? The Blackwaters, the Halliburtons, the CACIs, the arms dealers, the warlords, the drug traffickers. HEY CONGRESS: Bring the troops home!

Ambassador James Dobbins, in

Ambassador James Dobbins, in Afghanistan in 2001, had engineered a peaceful outcome by encouraging a conference on Afghanistan (in Bonn) with the neighboring countries including Iran and Pakistan, as well as India and Russia. An international conference is a preferable strategy to that of building a huge army. General Mc Chrystal wants an Afghan National Army of 240,000 plus an Afghan Police of 160,000. Afghanistan cannot afford it, and we don’t want another β€œblow back” the root causes behind the enduring and resilient nature of the Taliban have very little to do with religion, and much to do with an ancient ethnic struggle between the Pashtun people, and virtually everyone else in the region….By ignoring the obvious truth of their largely homogeneous ethnic composition, we have misdiagnosed not only the nature of their insurgency, but also the best way to deal with that insurgency”. (Major Holmes) Joining with the Pakistani government to restore order by helping them suppress Taliban activities within their borders will stabilize Pakistan. We should create a Pashtunistan which reflects the tribal boundaries. This would be a new state, carved from parts of both Afghanistan and Pakistan, similar to what we created in Kurdistan or in Bosnia Neither Americans nor Pakistanis want fortress β€œembassies” in Peshawar or Islamabad nor high cost DynCorp or Xe mercenaries to anger already very angry Pakistanis. The Kerry-Lugar Bill is timely and should help us in this context to consult with our partners in an ISAF that has been offended by the attitude of General McChrystal. Ideally, we could then organize another Bonn conference along the lines set by Ambassador James Dobbins.

Did you read the quote from

Did you read the quote from Dennis Kucinich? Do you know where Ralph Nader and Cynthia McKinney stood on this war? Let's be honest how many hear stood with Kucinich in the 2008 campaign? How many supported and voted for Nader or McKinney? Won't most the folks "opposing" these wars be arguing in 2012 as these wars continue to rage that we have to re-elect Obama? When will they ever learn...when will they ever learn?

I always accepted the

I always accepted the reality that President GW Bush was stupid, but that his stupidity was just what the voters wanted. I never thought that President Obama was stupid, nor that this time around, voters wanted stupidity in office. But who can read the history of "Western" intervention in Afghanistan and imagine that the US would be more successful than its predecessors? This is a primitive society. While not PC, that remark is an accurate statement. We, in the West, can just possibly grasp the edges of understanding this. Yes, Jamail and Esma, like people everywhere, want to just get on with their lives and not be involved in conflict with anyone. But conflict means something different to them than it does to George or Michelle in the US of A. It's not over until the last one of one side or the other lies dead in the dust. No compromise; no court case; no adjudication. So, it's never going to be over in our lifetime. I say to Respondent No. 2 that I am not at all certain that this demi-war "is unjust and plain wrong", but I have, and will continue to oppose any wars that do not respond to direct attacks on our physical nation, AT LEAST on the grounds of "US fatalities". That, alone, is, I believe a legitimate ground to oppose any war. When those who send my grandchildren and grandnephews and grandnieces off to war are prepared to lead the charge, then maybe I will reconsider if a war needs my support. Of course, no war needs my support, or your support. Politicians start them, and, short of total victory, it is always up to us, the families of the sons and daughters who get shipped off to die, to stop them. ~Potagere

All I can do is repeat

All I can do is repeat this: "Has the last American soldier who will die in Afghanistan been born yet?" it needs to become a slogan! (Thank you guerillamaker)

We need a constitutional

We need a constitutional convention. Our present government is not working. Reform can't happen with our current politicians. Too corrupted! Let's start over for a real democracy.

Let us simply line our

Let us simply line our solders up on the pipeline. Lets simply protect our mission! People are expendable let us not lose the very thing this war was about. How was 911, even conected to Afganastan anyway? answer, patraitism. I am still confused!

I'm all for ending funding

I'm all for ending funding for ''Endless War''.., especially for a strategy to fight an insurgency in Afghanistan when what we should actually be fighting is a real war against a real enemy that has declared real war on us..., This is not what we are doing there now.... I think Obama does not take war lightly as 'theoretical adventures worth playing out' or with a Corporate mindset like the Neocons and Dick C perhaps did... Or as some personal aggrandizing event as BuSh probably did.... I tend to trust Obama on this and believe he will weigh real options made by smart people. I do not think Al Qeada will just go away or leave us alone. I Don't think the Taliban will make good political partners... I think they have declared an endless war on us, are determined to win even if it takes generations to do so and will keep coming unless they are destroyed.

Vaclav Havel spoke of the

Vaclav Havel spoke of the "...singular, explosive, incalculable political power of living within the truth." This was what Gandhi had called "the truth force." Solzhenitsyen spoke of it as "the refusal to live by the lie." Martin Luther King's non-violent mass demonstrations proved its power and force in America. We are a nation in fear, living the lie spun to us by the warmongers that have taken over our government. It is time to step out of the shadow of fear and into the light of truth. Violence can only beget violence; war only begets war. Our fantasy of voting for "change" is no longer valid; its power usurped by two political parties that do not want peace. Our only recourse is mass non-violent demonstrations. Where is the leader who can call out from the American people the will and the strength to cast off fear and demand peace? Desperate times often have a way of bringing out leadership, and our times are certainly desperate. Here's hoping.

Is there something about the

Is there something about the geography of Iraq and Afghanistan that makes them such uniquely fertile ground for terrorists that by "cleansing" them we will make the USA safe? Or must we, to justify our present wars, be prepared to send our armies to Cuba, Brazil, the Carri bean the middle east, and several other African countries all of which have histories of terrorists activities in the recent past.

10/08/2009-08:03I always

10/08/2009-08:03I always accepted the...Agree all wars should be defensive! However,if we continue relying on energy from oil ,the impending supply reduction & increased demand inevitably results in fighting over what's left.Alternative energy is vital to our security and well being, and MUST BE EMBRACED AS NECESSARY CHANGE.Secondly,Corporate sponsorship of our political leaders must be eliminated-"bought and paid for" applies!

"Why, of course, the people

"Why, of course, the people don't want war. Why would some poor slob on a farm want to risk his life in a war when the best that he can get out of it is to come back to his farm in one piece. Naturally, the common people don't want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy or a fascist dictatorship or a Parliament or a Communist dictatorship. . . . [V]oice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country." Herman Goering interviewed by Gustave Gilbert, an American intelligence officer, during the Nuremberg war crimes trials. Gilbert wrote the book, Nuremberg Diary.

Please... we have the

Please... we have the technology to pinpoint people's locations, to eavesdrop on their personal conversations, to kill people with microwaves... If the US military wanted the Taliban, al Qaeda, and Bin Laden gone, they'd be gone... But if they are the enemy, why was the only plane allowed in the air on 9/11 was the one ferrying Bin Laden's family from California to the safety of the Middle East?... No, the US government (a.k.a. corproate America) recognises only one potential threat to its agenda: its own people.

US-NATO are using their

US-NATO are using their Military Might to Control World Energy Resources http://wp.me/p4271-1p0 Unfortunately it is the soldiers and innocent civilians who pay the price for their greed.

Morgaine, What you wrote

Morgaine, What you wrote comes the closest to the truth of all that has been said here. If the ones in charge of our Government wanted an end to war, there would be no war. It is beneficial to the warmongers in our government to keep wars going so as to weaken this country to the extent that we cannot defend ourselves from the very ones that wish to destroy us..our own Government. It only took one well-planned blackflag attack to rouse us to a danger that was manufactured by the Zionist that control this country. What fools we are.

Guys, either we fight the

Guys, either we fight the war in Afghanistan now, or we fight it later, but we are going to end up fighting it either way. The Iraq war was unnecessary. It was a war fought for control of oil, period. However, the Taliban government in Afghanistan actually took part in an attack on the United States, this alone makes the war there justifiable both morally and under international law. The fact that the Taliban are fighting to regain control, which will allow them to oppress and torture the population of Afghanistan again, means that they will also be once more in a position to support those who attack our country.

Who says Afghanis bombed

Who says Afghanis bombed NYC? What's the evidence? I understand it was Saudis whose families were out of power in Saudi Arabia and who longed for reform that would be more equitable, but were prevented from realizing reform by Bush-backed pals who cooperated with US/Internat.Oil and the Saudi leadership. The out-of-power families' sons and friends took their argument directly to the US in behalf of their extended families in Saudi Arabia. We all know they weren't Iraqis..or Taliban...they were from Arabian families, rivalrous with the Saudis for power that they hoped 'democracy' would bring! They said it was to bring 'democracy' to Arabia! From THAT attack the US Gov't and the media fabricated the massive Iraq war against Bin Laden's 'insurgency', widening it to include Iraq, Afghanistan, the Taliban, (and soon Pakistan), all to protect OIL! Including that northwest oil pipeline across Afghanistan (after all, nobody wants another Chechnya holding up the flow of oil to Europe)! The House of Saud, best friends with the Bush family, continues to concentrate their power in Arabia. Bin Laden could be anywhere by now. (He was educated in the US and was an international traveler.) Is this war even in our national interest? Could there be a contract, protected by the UN that could serve all the affected nations better than interminable war? Someday that may bccome apparent, like our peace with Germany, Japan and Viet Nam..and a dozen other intractable hostilities in the world...They will prove tractable after all, after horrifying, unnecessary bloodshed..

Eloquent letter ! I do hope

Eloquent letter ! I do hope that Truthout sent that statement to both the President of the U.S. as well as Congress. Thank you Truthout editors.
