An Open Letter to President Barack Obama

    Dear President Obama:

Afghanistan is the good war, you tell us, necessary to ensure that it not again become a training ground and base from which al-Qaeda can launch attacks against the United States. This is also what we heard from the Bush administration war criminals and from others who support continuing, even escalating, the AFPAK campaign. In a recent article in The Wall Street Journal, Senators Graham, Lieberman and McCain, in response to the increasing opposition to the Afghanistan occupation, wrote that "We have reached a seminal moment in the struggle against violent Islamist extremism, and we must commit the decisive force that Gen. McChrystal tells us carries the least risk of failure." The wording here is significant as it implies that the senators see escalation not as a means of achieving success necessarily, but of avoiding failure - however temporarily and at whatever cost in human lives.

President Obama, before you decide whether to send 40,000 additional troops into harm's way, I respectfully request that you answer several common sense and simple questions. With Afghanistan in chaos and confidence in the central government at an all time low in the wake of a fraudulent election that, in the words of Peter Galbraith, "handed the Taliban its greatest strategic victory in eight years of fighting the United States and its Afghan partners," just what do you expect the addition of 40,000 more troops to accomplish? Should the situation on the ground deteriorate still further or not improve, which seems likely in the absence of a legitimate, efficient and honest government that merits the trust and confidence of the Afghan people - a viable alternative to the "stability" offered by the Taliban - will further escalations be necessary in the months ahead? Senators Graham, Lieberman and McCain argue for a commitment of however many more troops General McChrystal determines is necessary to complete the mission, the "... decisive military force necessary to prevail." Gen. Dan McNeill, former commander of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force in Afghanistan, admits that, according to established US doctrine regarding counterinsurgency warfare, the "decisive force" of which the senators speak, must exceed 400,000 troops to have a chance for success in Afghanistan.

As we mark the beginning of a ninth year mired in a protracted war of indeterminate nature, with no foreseeable end to a US commitment, just how much longer will you ask our young men and women to continue to fight and die in Afghanistan? While Senators Graham's, Lieberman's and McCain's commitment to stand with you "through the tough months ahead" is admirable, according to Army Chief of Staff Gen. George Casey, our commitment in Afghanistan will require, not months, but 10 to 15 years to make a difference, if at all. With the dead numbering over 5,000 American servicemen and servicewomen and a million Iraqi, Afghani and Pakistani civilians, how many more lives, Mr. President, are you prepared to sacrifice? How many more families will you destroy?

Already, the "war on terrorism" is the second most expensive conflict in American history, trailing only WWII. While most Americans have been lulled into complacency, apathy and indifference and feel personally unaffected by the occupations, the reality is that the "war on terrorism" is costing the American taxpayer in excess of $3 trillion. Just how much more treasure are you prepared to squander in pursuit of undetermined goals in a conflict that is not only economic suicide, but not making America safe?

President Obama, it is time, long past, for decisive action to bring these occupations to an end. How much more failure, pain, suffering and sacrifice will you ask the American people to accept and endure in Afghanistan? At what point will you garner the courage to admit that the effort, though perhaps noble, is impossible or beyond what we are willing/able to endure/pay in lives and treasure? Should you continue on this road to disaster, I fear you will share the fate of another Liberal Democratic president, who, having become embroiled in quagmire, with too much invested in treasure, lives and reputation to just pick up and walk away, had to abandon his dreams of a "Great Society." The Vietnam War defined and tainted the administration of President Lyndon Baines Johnson. I have one final question President Obama, is Afghanistan your Vietnam?

The question is "Are the

The question is "Are the lessons of Vietnam so quickly forgotten?" War is not the answer.

For the truth on the Obama

For the truth on the Obama War, got to Google and hit this "Afghanistan proposed Pipeline"

Professor Bica is right on!

Professor Bica is right on! If its not the issue of dead American on the battlefield, then it certainly is about "At what point will you garner the courage to admit that the effort, though perhaps noble, is impossible or beyond what we are willing/able to endure/pay in lives and treasure?" American kill each other at the rate of 45,000 a year on our highways so it must not be about lives. Americans waste billions on financial bailouts, junk food cures for obesity and cosmetics. So it must not be about treasure. Americans contribute billions to evangelistic buffoons who preach forms of self-righteous indignity about obedience to GOD, Family Values and patriotism (country). So it must not be about self-confidence. Afghanistan doesn't have huge reserves of petroleum so it must not be about oil. According to best estimates, Afghanistan has very few Al Quaeda terrorists so it must not be about terrorism. The Afghans just pulled off a fantastic free, fair and fraudulent election, so it must not be about democracy. After all we did this in 2000 again in 2004, no? So what is this "Good War" all about? Should it be compared to a NFL Monday night football match? How many first downs, special teams and scores are needed to win? President Obama you have met your makers: George W. Bush, Robert Gates and others got us into this and you are damn determined to get us out just as we "got out" of Vietnam and just as the Soviets "got out" of Afghanistan not so long ago. President Obama, you are becoming a victim of your historical electoral victory. Congratulations. Your erstwhile opponent and his ilk have had the last laugh if you continue on your ill-advised course with the Generals calling the shots. Congratulations!

Graham, Lieberman and McCain

Graham, Lieberman and McCain were right it about being a "seminal moment." They, like so many other warmongers, are suffering the cognitive effects of testosterone poisoning.

Obama is not Bush.

Obama is not Bush. Afganistan is not Viet Nam. There is no comparison. Period. Pakistan is a nuclear power being taken over by ours and the world's worst enemy--ignorance and hatred. This war is not optional.

The USSR was once as

The USSR was once as powerful as the USA. Their goal was world domination, as is ours, apparently. Little Third-World Afghanistan slowly bled the USSR of men, money, machines....and after about ten years the USSR was dead. Can't we learn anything?

Obama has no real power to

Obama has no real power to either prosecute or end this war because it is, by definition, "endless war." Only the people of America have that power and they are afraid to use it. Martin Luther King used that power to call upon people to rise up in non-violent demonstrations against the lie. He showed us the force of truth, and for doing so, was murdered by the ruling elite. King knew that it was coming, but he was not afraid to show us what Gandhi knew; that the great mass of people want peace and freedom, if only they can find the courage to stand up to the lie of fear and war. Albert Camus wrote that "There is good and there is evil. One must choose."

"The question is "Are the

"The question is "Are the lessons of Vietnam so quickly forgotten?" War is not the answer."

We never learned the lesson. That's why getting schooled again in Iraq and Afghanistan. And we'll keep repeating this grade in other wars, in other countries and other occupations until we actually learn enough to graduate, or until we no longer have the resources to spend on the physical domination of the world.

For those of you who are

For those of you who are interested in why Afghanistan, may I suggest getting your hands on "Obama does Globalistan" by Pepe Escobar. Since you read thruthout, chances are you are open to alternative points of views. I just finished it, and I am starting again with a south Asia map pinned on my wall, this time.

Why didn't we learn the

Why didn't we learn the lesson of Vietnam? Because civic education is so bad in the US. Most public school teachers did not learn the substance of history and civics. Check it out for yourselves. Have a chat with them. They're not bad people but they didn't have a good education themselves.

How can American society

How can American society tolerate 39,252 deaths associated with automobile collisions in 2005, or 438,000 smoking related deaths in 2008, both instances where we "killed ourselves," and yet devote more resources and political energy to fighting terrorists, who have killed far fewer US citizens? There is a reason which reflects much about us.

What are smart bombs

What are smart bombs anyway? More war only creats more innocent people killed thus more and more who have a reason to hate us.

These wars involve

These wars involve employment for the young men and women who are put in harms way--you forget that they volunteer for the military. If we had a draft, these wars would come to a dead standstill. more: The military cannot "progress" unless there are wars to fight -- contractors cannot overbill for services, lobbyists become frustrated, and politcal payoffs dry up. We are dupes and dopes. Duped by our media and politician, doped up with distractions of TV and sports and and and....

In forensic investigation,

In forensic investigation, dental records are pretty much indisputably considered proof of identification. check out http://aangirfan.blogspot.com/2006/12/saddam-husseins-wife-and-his-teeth.html McChrystal was the man who led the unit who captured someone with bad teeth, and foisted him off on the American public as the leader of a country that provided free dental care to all citizens. That he spoke publicly about his militaristic opinion on the matter in Afghanistan, which he is required by his post to keep to himself, after his involvement in such an obvious hoax on the American people is frankly, to be expected. He obviously is black-ops through and through, and I would strongly suspect was advised to speak publicly about this matter by his extra-governmental controllers. As far as Afghanistan not being about oil, though it does not have oil itself, it is the planned place for UnoCal's pipeline to make the oil in the Caspian region exploitable by the west rather than china. This was on the books before 9-11, and is the reason why the US courted the Taliban for so long. If only Obama had the nerve to call out the fraud perpetrated on the American populace by these extragovernmental geopolitcal players for whom Bush was working, rather than seeming to be working for them, I would be as happy with his performance as I am his rhetoric
