Obama Gains, McCain Seeks Game-Changer

Barack Obama made strides toward easing voters' concerns about his candidacy in Tuesday night's debate. John McCain, despite raising pointed questions about his rival's readiness, didn't create the game-changing moment he'll need between now and Election Day.

There are still four weeks to go, but time is running out on McCain.

Poised and confident, Obama directly confronted his greatest hurdle - and did it by turning the tables on McCain during a foreign policy question.

"Now Senator McCain suggests that somehow, you know, I'm green behind the ears and I'm just spouting off and he's somber and responsible," Obama said as McCain laughed and said: "Thank you very much."

Obama then bluntly challenged McCain's steadiness: "This is a guy who sang bomb, bomb, bomb Iran, who called for the annihilation of North Korea - that I don't think is an example of speaking softly."

Needing a big moment - he trails in key state polling - McCain tried to stage one by saying he would order the Treasury Department to enact a sweeping $300 billion program to shield homeowners from mortgage foreclosure. The drama was lost in part because he didn't provide details, leaving those to his aides to deliver in a stream of news releases.

Said McCain: "It's my proposal. It's not Sen. Obama's proposal."

True, though Obama said last month that such a plan should be considered.

Later, McCain seemed unwilling to utter Obama's name, referring to him as "That one" while debating a vote on an energy bill.

The debate boiled down to two questions: Could Obama close the sale? Could McCain change the game? The answer to both is no, but Obama may have helped himself the most - if only because he came into the debate ahead and with a political landscape dramatically in the Democrats' favor.

The candidates debated on a day in which stocks plunged anew and a Gallup Poll showed that just 9 percent of Americans think the country is headed in the right direction. Nearly 7 in 10 voters say the economy is their biggest issue.

With that bleak backdrop, Obama and McCain each sought to show he alone would change Washington. In the only town hall of the debate series, both candidates tried to show empathy with the dismayed public. And they tried to go negative without being obvious about it.

"This is a final verdict on the failed economic policies of the last eight years, strongly promoted by President Bush and supported by Senator McCain," Obama said of the economic crisis, the first of several times when the Democrat linked McCain to the unpopular president.

McCain, in turn, raised questions about the first-term Illinois senator's readiness to serve, saying: "We don't have time for on the job training, my friend."

Even with the political environment tailor made for a Democratic victory, Obama has had trouble convincing skeptics who have difficulty imagining the 47-year-old freshman senator, vying to be the first black president, in the White House. A recent AP-Yahoo News poll showed that doubts about Obama's competency loomed even larger than the color of his skin.

Thus, Obama looked to use the debate as an opportunity to try to reassure voters, connect with them - and solidify his advantage. He was out of his scripted comfort zone in the town-hall style confrontation, though he avoided a major misstep that could have set him back.

Facing dwindling options in a strikingly poor environment for Republicans, McCain sought to shift the dynamics of the race in his favor in large part by stoking voters' concerns about Obama, raising questions about how well the public knows him and questioning his readiness to serve.

But he wasn't nearly as pointed as he and running mate Sarah Palin had been in recent days.

In talking about the mortgage crisis, McCain referred to "Senator Obama and his cronies and his friends in Washington" who supported "risky loans." He also referred to Obama's "secret that you don't know" and claimed that it was that he would increase taxes on 50 percent of small business revenue.

In the end, Obama didn't seal the deal and McCain didn't have a game-changing moment.

They'll have another chance in eight days.

I'm confused. Is this the same Liz who wrote this article which showed up today (10/22/08)? http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5gkM0JvRRUl81LuDA_P2t_goU2kGAD93VM4PO0 This article appeared today when the rest of the headlines were about Obama's 10 point lead. Liz' article claims all is even in the homestretch? Very confusing.

My friends, Ayyy, Ayyy just

My friends, Ayyy, Ayyy just can't tell you how much consideration I've been giving to your economic well-, well-, well-being. I've decided to stop the terminal phase of my campaign temporarily again to put your interests first. I will go to Asuncion! and I will make sure that all bank deposits are backed up by the full faith-based credit of the United States government, until my plane lands in Asuncion. Yes my friends, as a loose cannon , I am your straight shooter! Thank you all my friends and may god bless!

My friends, Ayyy hav-a

My friends, Ayyy hav-a plan! Those poor folks who have been paying 15 percent capital gains tax on their poor millions and billions, those poor folks who used to pay 20%, they should only pay 7.5 percent! My friends, and I do call you my friends, and there's one of you born every minute my friends, my fuehrer! I have a plan! make that 'friends', my friends!

When in doubt the old Karl

When in doubt the old Karl Rove trick (originated by Nixon with his Southern Strategy) or stirring up racism is always the fallback for Republicans going back to George Wallace. McCain and Palin are truly shameless in pandering to the lynch mob mentality that is so easily ignited in this country. The true character of these two people should scare the hell out of anyone with half a brain, or half a soul.

"McCain keeps saying to Obama Wed, 10/08/2008 - 17:55 — Jan Groh (not verified)" I like your comment so much, Jan. Because it does resonate the hearts of many who have a keen sense of the reality & real politics. thank you.

Sen. Obama may gain enormous

Sen. Obama may gain enormous good will and respect both in America and abroad if he would take a lesson from the Russians and countless other governments, and promise to make his first job in the White House an order to the FBI to arrest George Bush, Dick Cheney, Connie Rice, Don Rumsfeld, Al Gonzales, Paulson, the head of the EPA, helluvamess Brownie, the heads of Wall Street, and most other senior execs in government and finance, and John McCain, and have them cool their heels say in Raoul Castro's Guantanamo, and investigate their parts in treason and other high crimes against humanity. Secondly, order an independent investigation into the FBI itself to find out why this has not been done already. Then get the troops home!

What disgusted me the most

What disgusted me the most as Tom Brokaw's performance. Could his pro-McCain bias be any more blatant?

Was McCain's arthritis

Was McCain's arthritis bothering him last night? Was he in pain?

McCain keeps saying to Obama

McCain keeps saying to Obama ""We don't have time for on the job training, my friend." Well, by his own admission it is McCain who would need the on the job training on the economy, which we truly clearly can't afford. I don't care how old he is, and how illustrious his military career has been, we need someone to take charge of our economy from day one. This argument falls on its face for me. John McCain only knows a life of bailout f rom his trophy wife Cindy, and his old buddy Keating. Obama knows how to organize people to help themselves. And will.

Sound piece. McCain is a

Sound piece. McCain is a disgrace, knowing his health is iffy and trying to foist the intellectually lacking and glossolalia speaking Sarah Bulldog Palin on us as his successor. He performed badly, showed his meanness, elicited negatives from his right wing base for his 300 billion dollar mortgage plan, and fooled nobody.

As for "experience" I am

As for "experience" I am thankful we have a candidate without the kind of experience shown by those running the government for the past eight years, or in fact, for the past twenty years. Obama's value is his fresh approach and willingness to re-think old ideas and tolerate another way of looking at problems, as well as imagination to stretch our horizon to find new solutions. A new approach I would like to consider is to jettison Wall Street. My "experience" involves the Great Depressionduring childhood plus continuous warfare in one place or another, in one way or another, throughout the rest of the 20th century. What a way to spend a lifetime.

The format for last night's

The format for last night's debate has been called that of a town hall meeting but it could not have been much farther from a town hall meeting except in audience size. In a real town hall meeting, the audience gets to respond as it will, speak without being screened, and, most important, follow up on responses. Last night's format resembled nothing so much as a university class room, more particularly, a law school "seminar," or more accurately small lecture, class. Far from being out of his comfort zone, Obama worked the space and the audience confidently and gracefully, with his voice pitched just right for the audience. No surprise since the "egghead" had 8 yr experience in classrooms. McCain, on the other hand, was stiff even creaky at moments, unsure where to move or look, and kept dropping into a faux whisper accompanied by an oily "my friends" reminiscent of nothing so much as a snake oil salesman. McCain resembled, especially since much of what he said was word for word what he's said a thousand times before, nothing so much as a pol working a fund raising event for the already committed, a snake oil salesman's heaven on earth. McCain claimed this was his forum. Sorry, John boy, you were wrong on this as you have been on so, so many things.

In actuality, it is McCain's

In actuality, it is McCain's character that is up for question. The public honestly knows little about who he really is. His incessant changes of position to get himself elected are dizzying! Who really is this man anyway--the POW expiating himself from"breaking,"needing to do the"repetition compulsion"thing by assuring we're in constant war, who later made sure all records of MIA's were forever sealed? Or, is he the escapee of the Keating Five, quite familiar with with Bailouts (that one possibly being the precursor to this one). Or is John McCain the adulterous husband, coming home from war to find that his wife, disfigured by an accident, involved himself with Cindy before his divorce. I haven't even said anything about his legendary explosiveness--do you want it near "the button"? We know that he's the McCain who promised a clean campaign, yet impulsively chose this pathetic running mate after knowing her for a month.. Now, the honorable McCain allows her to lie and distort about Obama, on her stump whipping up enough hatred that someone in her audience said, "Kill him." What of her character? She is a ruthless attack dog, using McCarthy-like tactics, but wrapped in an attractive package--unread and certainly unfit for the presidency of the United States. More character issues--At least two investigations for abuse of office in Alaska are pending; news that she and "the first dude" owe the IRS a big chunk of taxes just broke today; her participation in her husband's sessessionist group (Isn't sessession from the Union treason? It once was); her involvement with the visiting pastor who believes in persecuting "witches" and laid hands on Sarah to bless her candidacy. Contrast these character issues with those of Obama, a devoted husband and father, a decent person, a community worker, sacrificing $ jobs to help poor people; a brilliant and nuanced thinker who has a deep grasp of the intricate relationships among nations. Obama's reforming tax policies should be helpful to everyday people and will count toward freeing us from the downward spiral caused by the deregulation of Bush and McCain. Theses policies (including the tax cuts) have favored the huge corporation and the very rich. Either candidate, when elected, is not going to be able to accomplish everything wanted because of the current economic collapse. But, a president of good character will be our destiny; and, no matter how much McCain self grandizes, he is NOT a man of good character--simply a man who wants to look AS F he is.

The whole country is reeling

The whole country is reeling from the economic meltdown. Given the severity of the economic situation, neither candidate wants to make any fast moves. The only thing Obama could do is rebut McCain's lies. I rate the debate: Yawn.

McCain's medical

McCain's medical condition--why is no one asking more questions about it? His age doesn't matter, but his aging (i.e. his physical and mental condition) certainly does. Throughout the debate, he was never able to sit on his tall stool, he paced the floor through most of Obama's presentations, and he left the auditorium immediately afterward, failing to meet the audience. These are actions of a person in considerable pain, or certainly would appear to be. Why? Is medication involved? If you listened closely, he was having some problem constructing sentences--a few times important words would be missing rendering sentences nonsensical. Fatigue? Distraction? Something else?

The debate confirmed to me

The debate confirmed to me that McCain is truly ready for retirement and should consider vacating his Senate seat. He is not coherent any more on any issues. All he appears to be capable of, like Palin, is to spit muck which does not stick. Thank you for your objective appraisal.
