And so it has begun. The final month of the presidential race, the campaign that feels as if it commenced some time during the Coolidge administration. And as we slide into these last weeks, what we all feared is coming true. Just when you thought the bottom of the swamp had been scraped, sludge gurgles up from the primordial ooze.

This is the endgame, the ugly stuff, meant to assassinate character and distract the electorate with foolishness as our financial house of cards flutters away into the uncertain winds of whatever's left of the global economy. "It's a dangerous road, but we have no choice," a "top McCain strategist" told the New York Daily News. "If we keep talking about the economic crisis, we're going to lose." Another GOP operative was quoted by The Washington Post: "There's no question we have to change the subject here."

Change the subject, turn the page, sling the mud. For several days now, Governor Palin has impugned Senator Obama's patriotism and accused him of "palling around with terrorists" - specifically, William Ayers, a founding member nearly 40 years ago of the radical and violent Weathermen, now a prominent educator and professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. Obama was chair of a school reform project, the Chicago Annenberg Challenge, and Ayers briefed board members on education issues. They both served on the board of a Chicago charity and Ayers and his wife hosted a coffee when Obama first ran for office.

Governor Palin cited The New York Times as backing up her accusations, despite that publication's previous characterization by the McCain campaign as a biased, inaccurate rag somewhere to the left of the Daily Worker. In fact, the Times reported, "A review of records of the schools project and interviews with a dozen people who know both men, suggest that Mr. Obama, 47, has played down his contacts with Mr. Ayers, 63." But, the paper continued, "the two men do not appear to have been close. Nor has Mr. Obama ever expressed sympathy for the radical views and actions of Mr. Ayers, whom he has called 'somebody who engaged in detestable acts 40 years ago, when I was 8.'"

The whole thing is reminiscent of the desperation move of the other President Bush, running against Bill Clinton in 1992, when he implied darker ulterior motives to Clinton's 1970 student visit to the Soviet Union.

For Obama's part, his campaign released an ad characterizing John McCain as "erratic," and a thirteen-minute video revisiting the "Keating Five." Senator McCain, the Obama folks would like you to recall, was one of five United States senators accused in 1989 of using their clout to help bail out Charles Keating, chairman of the failed Lincoln Savings and Loan. All had received campaign contributions and other perks from Keating.

The collapse of Lincoln Savings cost American taxpayers $2.6 billion. Charles Keating went to prison. Mr. McCain got off with a mild rebuke for "questionable conduct" from the Senate Ethics Committee, and vowed that from then on he would be above reproach.

So both sides are at each other, hammer and tong. But to suggest there is an equivalency in the attacks, as many in the media have done, is debatable. That McCain has a past history of stumbling into financial poo (although $2.6 billion seems a pittance in comparison to the mega-sums being gambled away now) seems on point, relevant at a time when the economy is the most important issue in the land. Not to mention that he had a far deeper and more personal relationship with Keating than Obama ever had with Ayers - including nine trips on the Keating dime (a few on Keating's private jet), some of which weren't reimbursed until the scandal erupted, and $112,000 in campaign contributions from Keating and his associates - more than any of the other four senators.

And not to mention McCain's relationship with Phil Gramm, his economic guru, the former senior senator from Texas via Wall Street who called us "a nation of whiners" and who manipulated Congress to open the door to many of the excesses that have led to our fiscal downfall - a man who, as American Prospect editor Harold Meyerson wrote, "has diminished American solvency and power beyond the wildest dreams of anti-American terrorists."

By comparison, the charges made by the McCain-Palin camp are scattershot and approach demagoguery, hurled primarily by Palin, who has been cast as designated campaign pit bull, the customary role given to a party's vice-presidential candidate.

But Governor Palin has skated onto the ice with a rare vengeance, not so much fiercely protective hockey mom as a political version of figure skater Tonya Harding, kneecapping the opposition and crying foul when caught in a media mess of her own making.

This leads from bad to worse. In Tuesday's Washington Post, Dana Milbank described a Palin rally in Florida: "In Clearwater, arriving reporters were greeted with shouts and taunts by the crowd of about 3,000. Palin then went on to blame Katie Couric's questions for her 'less-than-successful interview with kinda mainstream media.' At that, Palin supporters turned on reporters in the press area, waving thunder sticks and shouting abuse. Others hurled obscenities at a camera crew. One Palin supporter shouted a racial epithet at an African-American sound man for a network and told him, 'Sit down, boy.'"

Thus, behind the candied incandescence of the Palin phenomena, behind the shoutouts to Joe Six Pack and third graders at the Gladys Wood Elementary School, behind the darn rights and the coy winks is perhaps something scarier - a rank appeal to our baser instincts at a time when nationwide fear can be manipulated to overrule basic common sense and decency.

Palin is coming across as a

Palin is coming across as a reincarnation of Hitler. She arouses emotions of anger and hate among her supporters. Hopefully this will not lead to acts of violence, or exacerbate intolerance towards immigrants, non-whites, and social values not in line with Palin/GOP views.

When will the "authorities"

When will the "authorities" begin to act on the incitement to riot and mayhem that Sara Palin is engaged in? Freedom of speech has its limits. And if the integrity of the election process is damaged by the fears of violence or by the reality of violence, the results will be a further end of America as we knew her. Wake up, FBI!

What a great forum. Love the

What a great forum. Love the quote about "Fascists say the darndest " and the Sinclair Lewis prediction. When FREEDOM knows no limits at all and ethics are cast aside, when only HAVING seems to count and that does not just apply to the "Joe 6-pack" crowd of intellectually challenged morons. fascism is lurking just around the corner. Ask someone in that crows who Sinclair Lewis is - you will be met with anger at the lowest common denominator because the dumbing down of the nation via TV and the media has reached a point where being an intellectual, well-read and "sober" is considered a BAD thing. I too fear for Obama's life and if this election is rigged like the last one was, then those same morons have been used as tools to bring themselves down as well as anyone else other than the elite pulling the strings behind the scenes who must be laughing themselves silly at the bail-out present they just received.

The Bush-McCain Twins, also

The Bush-McCain Twins, also known as "Tweedle-Dee" and "Tweedle-Dum." Bush is Tweedle-Dum. But let's hammer it hard. McCain may talk a little bit about the economy, health care, and so on, but if he gets elected, he will tell everyone, "We cannot focus on these things because we are at war!" That is what Bush did. Oh, and the "trickle-down" thing where the rich are supposed to create jobs if their taxes remain low, that is a lie. They used that tax savings to lay off American workers, hire illegal aliens for less money and no benefits, buy failing companies, and ship their factories overseas. McCain will continue that. These fat cats (CEOs) are paying themselves all this money so that they will never, ever have to worry about money for the rest of their lives and will pass it on to their children.

Funny. "intelligent people

Funny. "intelligent people will not be fooled by Palin's ridiculous lies and games and "Six Pack Joe" mentality". Intelligent people don't vote. They know that whomever of the "two" choices we have, we will only get more of the same.

Has anyone noticed the

Has anyone noticed the recent gas shortages isolated to areas in Georgia mirrors the same volatile region that produced many of the most courageous and defiantly uncompromising soldiers in the Georgia Army during the Civil War. I don't think that's an accident.

The comedy of the McCain

The comedy of the McCain racists calling Obama a "Black Man" is this: Obama is far "Whiter" (in the sense that racists mean that term) than any of the red-necked morons who so eagerly bay like hounds when Palin whips up racist hysteria. Obama is highly educated, extremely well spoken, polite, strong of character, incredibly successful for a man so young, self confident, and very likable. In fact, he's so "White", it's as though he's been dipped in delicously spiced bleached flour! Ooooo, and that's what really pisses the low-brow racists off! They have nothing to attack but a slightly carmel-colored skin tone. They are simply jealous that this man has all the characteristics that they love, except for one. He's NOT a thug, and that just won't fly with insecure bullies whose only power is gathering together in great throngs and intimidating others. In all honesty, I did not support Obama in the primaries. I would have preferred Kucinich or Edwards. It's not that I dislike Obama; it's that I think he has been quite weak on fighting the fascist agendas that the neo-con and religious nut cases have been pushing for 3 decades running. Obama has many fine qualities, but he is very bland on key issues that need to be aggressively pursued if this country is to remain a democracy in any sense of the word. But at this point in time, I'll take Bland over Crazy any day of the week! DARN RIGHT! Wink, Wink!

I'm not only concerned with

I'm not only concerned with the new nasty tone of the campagn but I am frankly scared : scared for our constitution, scared for Mr Obama and scared about where this mindset will lead us - to a global war not very far down the line. And that with either an Obama win (to prevent him from taking up office of president-Patriot Act or some such national security emergency) or a McCain win ( to get the economy going without any real structural change in its conduct)! I hope I'm just paranoïd.

Alaska is a huge, EMPTY

Alaska is a huge, EMPTY area. Why don't all of Palin's idiots follow her up there and LET them secede? They deserve each other.

I've been hard pressed to

I've been hard pressed to understand the "palin phenomenon". Yes, she's in the winger-dinger mold, but I felt there had to be something else in the mix. Well, I was house sitting for a friend and turned on the TV...I haven't watched TV for over nine years...and I found myself in a state of shock! the lowest common denominators of shallowness, ego, ego, ego based crappola was the tenor of just about everything that I looked at. Turn your TVs off and do something, like make calls for you party/candidate/cause! We are in the sh*ts, here, people!!!

When people rally for Obama

When people rally for Obama it's because they are smart and independent, but if they are rallying against him they are mindless drones being manipulated? Truthout would do good to evaluate it's mindless following of the NWO's latest choice as America's figurehead. Obama supports military adventurism and expansion. He is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations. He receives invaluable support from corporate owned media (think GE owned NBC and Chomsky's propaganda model) and corporate donations. At a point when Americans are most dissatisfied with their rulers, Obama is the NWO's best answer to quelling the masses. You will understand four years down the road.

Why is anyone wasting their

Why is anyone wasting their time on this dog and pony show? I just don't get it. The whole 'election' is one elite rigged game.

I don't understand the

I don't understand the surprise. Has there been a Republican campaign since 1968 that hasn't been based on fear, racism and hate?

Have people forgotten that

Have people forgotten that this type of rhetoric by Bush/Quale in 1992 led to the Oklahoma City bombings, a lunatic with an assault rifle shooting at the White House, and the growth of right wing terrorist groups across the US?

When will McCain's evasion

When will McCain's evasion of the truth about Vietnam-era POW's come out? When will his lies about his torture be revealed with his votes approving real torture, along with the abolition of most of the bill of rights? Is it so dangerous to get Americans to think?

This electoral race has

This electoral race has truly become scary. McCain / Palin have gone way over the top spreading Fear Uncertainty and Doubt (FUD). They are doing nothing less than inciting a riot, thru Lies and Bigotry. The American people need to come to their senses before violence breaks out. The best thing the McCain could do right now is deliver a public apology to the American people and to Sen. Obama.

I was very disappointed with

I was very disappointed with Sarah Palin at a recent rally in Florida. She has shared that she's a Christian. As a Christian, when we hear hateful angry remarks that are meant maliciously, it is our duty to disarm that type of environment. She really didn't act like a Christian in that case. We have a responsibility to not only "say" what we are, but actions sure speak louder than words.

McCain's overwrought

McCain's overwrought supporters nearly got a dose of his infamous temper the other day in Minnesota--steam was coming out of his ears. Some of them were so worked up about what they were hearing that they were asking McCain about Obama's supposed Arab ethnicity and a woman worried about bringing up her unborn child in a country over which he presided. McCain's former integrity seemed to revive a bit as he watched with shock what his people had created. When he reassured the crowd that while he himself would make the better president, there was nothing to worry about Obama. When he called Obama "a decent family man, citizen," a significant minority of the audience loudly booed him. A visibly-shaken McCain was clearly about to blow a gasket when he confronted his own audience with shocked disbelief at such disrespect vented toward himself.

In 1935, Sinclair Lewis

In 1935, Sinclair Lewis predicted that "When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross". I've heard it said that McCain is the flag and Palin is the cross.

We need to hammer away at

We need to hammer away at Todd's secessionist ideas, yet. That is not Putting America First, is it? Be fully aware that Obama's supporters will not be moved by lies and innuendo. Only truly undecided voters may possibly be swayed, and intelligent people will not be fooled by Palin's ridiculous lies and games and "Six Pack Joe" mentality. We should chill out and know Barack will win; he is a natural leader who has guts, character, calm and brilliance on his side. Think Obama WIN, then work hard to make it happen

None of this is or should be

None of this is or should be a surprise. We've watched the Bush administration and the far right lie, cheat, steal, withhold, prevaricate, propagandize, subvert, and break or ignore every law or custom that in the least way might have hindered them them from their goal: the destruction of the republic and the transformation of a representative democracy into a fascist police state. They have used every natural and un-natural disaster to further this plan. Now they are using the economic meltdown, the election itself, and the mobs of ravening beasts whom they have created, to close the deal. If Dr. Strangelove had only realized that his dream could be made true in eight short years without bothering to hide in a bomb shelter mountain or throw one nuke at the Ruskies. If they can't get our fleet to nuke Iran before January, they can certainly get their mobs to act badly enough to call for martial law. It ain't over till the fat man sings.

Fascists say the darndest

Fascists say the darndest things!

People are angry, very

People are angry, very angry, but to redirect them during a rally, and mislead, and LIE about a person's character is wrong. It will backfire, and it will continue to backfire. Donna Brazile, said it best, if you disagree with Obama, and do not want to vote for him, do it because of his policy and platform do not do it because he a considered a "Black' man. Base your decision on clear thinking. Not racist biased crap or a bag of lies. As Donna Bazile said, he was in the womb for nine months of a white woman. He was raised by WHITE, CAUCASIAN GRANDPARENTS. He graduated from HARVARD. He went back and helped a poverty community and later entered the Senate. McCain is loosing. He actually lost when he decided to chose or accept Six Pack Sarah Palin for a running mate. Georg DUBUA has taken this country down the tubes... eight years and in his last year, we are facing the worse times since the Great Depression. Be clear. Be fair, Be American, Be United!

Palin has stoked the fear

Palin has stoked the fear and lit the fuse. I don't think McCain can put it out. He looked scared when the crowd began to boo. It's the mob mentality. Palin has turned it loose. I really don't think this was the road McCain intended to travel when the campaign began, but desperation has set in. It is very frightening to see raw hatred and bigotry manifested so blatantly. The United States has gone through some terrible, dark times. We are going through another. To some of us, Obama symbolizes hope, and all that is good about our country. His intelligence and reasoned approach inspires us. I believe he will be our next President. I pray for his safety.

The problem lies in that

The problem lies in that humanity doesn't want to THINK, to ponder, to question, what it means to love God with your whole heart and soul, and to love your neighbor as yourself. We began as a country in the service of God, The Great Spirit, with freedom of religion. Now so many look for how God can serve us. A bit upside down wouldn't you say? Each of us bears responsibility here.

Palin is a loose cannon, and

Palin is a loose cannon, and her only strength is intimidation. She is a typical queen bee. Watch her. She'll deflect all real questions and practically incite a riot in coming rallies. She's reminiscent of some really dirty past racism, and encapsulates the worst of Bush's fear mongering tactics. I pray enough of my fellow citizens have the sense not to buy in. I fear otherwise, sadly. I so much more trust Obama than anyone else who's ever run for this office in years. (I'm 41). But get out your rain coats, cuz I fear the mud slinging has only just begun. They're desperate. Truly desperate. But truth will hopefully win out.

McCain/Palin have let the

McCain/Palin have let the genie of hatred out of the lamp. McCain tried to put him back in again. The crowd booed. A few minutes further into his speech McCain went back to the lies and harsh rhetoric. The genie showed him who is boss. If McCain had any honor and sense left, he would blame Palin, fire her, and find another VP. If he had an abundance of honor, he would retire and take his pit bull with him.

why has it taken so long for

why has it taken so long for obama to bring out keating? and why isn't obama talking more about phil gramm, mccain's economic advisor? gramm is the central figure in the 3 biggest economic crises in america in the past 25 years. obama, speak up about it. gramm is perhaps the single most important architect of the current economic meltdown, and the enron scandal, and the s&l crisis. it is described in more detail here: http://johny.newsvine.com/_news/2008/10/03/1952156-some-facts-adrift-in-calvin-woodwards-article

After these last few weeks

After these last few weeks of absolute insanity in the political arena I have come up with my own contributions to this Mad Hatter Tea Party we all seem to be part of. First, all political candidates would be wearing shock collars that would zap the wearer whenever a lie was spoken. At least one of the debates will be held in a huge out door arena where the voters of this country could ask questions and then have a bushel of old tomatoes with which to show their satisfaction or lack there of with the answer given. Last but not least I have an idea for a new reality show. All of our law makers back in Washington D. C. would trade places with one of the families in their District. They would live a year with this families job, wages, health care or lack of, debt, retirement, monthly budget, form of transportation and lack of a true voice in the decisions which are made by others that impact them. Wow, I sure would feel better about the way we were headed…..

Why isn't anyone talking

Why isn't anyone talking about Todd Palin's association with an organization promoting the succession of Alaska from the US, and about Sarah Palin's addressing their convention in 2006? This is far more serious than what they are accusing Obama of in his brief encounters with Ayers.

McCain's anger has

McCain's anger has apparently erupted in his supporters. Who are they really angry at? Do they really believe all the lies? Obama's plans are hardly socialistic. Now they are calling tax breaks for the middle class, socialistic? They want to deny healthcare to themselves? We have entered into some sort of absurd surreal conundrum. If they are this angry now, how angry will they be if Obama wins? There is so much anger and ignorance, it is truly scary. McCain needs to seriously ratchet down the rhetoric even more than he has.
