Robert F. Kennedy Jr. | Alaskan Independence Party: The Last Refuge of a Scoundrel

In 2004, America's malleable mainstream media allowed itself to be manipulated by artful Republican operatives into devoting weeks of broadcast attention and drums of ink to unfairly desecrating John Kerry's genuine Vietnam heroics while obligingly muzzling serious discussion of George W. Bush's shameful wartime record of evasion and cowardice.

Last week found the American media once again boarding Republican swift boats against this season's Democratic candidate armed with unfair and hypocritical attacks artfully designed by GOP strategists to distract attention from the cataclysmic outcomes of Republican governance. Vice Presidential hopeful Sarah Palin has taken to faulting Senator Barack Obama for his casual acquaintance with a respected Illinois educator Bill Ayers, who forty years ago was a member of the Weathermen, a movement active when Obama was eight and which he has denounced as "detestable." Palin argues that the relationship proves that Obama sees "America as being so imperfect that he is palling around with terrorists who would target their own country."

The Times dedicated a page one article to Obama's relations with Ayers and CNN's Anderson Cooper obliged Palin by rewarding her reckless accusations about Obama's patriotism with a major investigative report. Fox, meanwhile, is still riveting its audience with wall to wall coverage of this pressing irrelevancy.

But if McCarthy-era guilt-by-association is once again a valid political consideration, Palin, it would seem, has more to lose than Obama. Palin, it could be argued, following her own logic, thinks so little of America's perfection that she continues to "pal around" with a man - her husband, actually - who only recently terminated his seven-year membership in the Alaskan Independence Party. Putting plunder above patriotism, the members of this treasonous cabal aim to break our country into pieces and walk away with Alaska's rich federal oil fields and one-fifth of America's land base - an area three-fourths the size of the Civil War Confederacy.

AIP's charter commits the party "to the ultimate independence of Alaska," from the United States which it refers to as "the colonial bureaucracy in Washington." It proclaims Alaska's 1959 induction as a state "as illegal and in violation of the United Nations charter and international law."

AIP's creation was inspired by the rabidly violent anti-Americanism of its founding father Joe Vogler, "I'm an Alaskan, not an American," reads a favorite Vogler quote on AIP's current website, "I've got no use for America or her damned institutions." According to Vogler AIP's central purpose was to drive Alaska's secession from the United States. Alaska, says current Chairwoman Lynette Clark, "should be an independent nation."

Vogler was murdered in 1993 during an illegal sale of plastic explosives that went bad. The prior year, he had renounced his allegiance to the United States explaining that, "The fires of hell are frozen glaciers compared to my hatred for the American government." He cursed the stars and stripes, promising, "I won't be buried under their damned flag...when Alaska is an independent nation they can bring my bones home." Palin has never denounced Vogler or his detestable anti-Americanism.

Palin's husband Todd remained an AIP party member from 1995 to 2002. Sarah can be described in McCarthy-era palaver as a "fellow traveler." While retaining her Republican registration, she attended the AIP's 1994 convention where the party called for a draft constitution to secede from the United States and create an independent nation of Alaska. The McCain Campaign has reluctantly acknowledged that she also attended AIP's 2000 Convention. She apparently found the experience so inspiring that she agreed to give a keynote address at the AIP's 2006 convention and she recorded a video greeting for this year's 2008 convention. In other words, this is not something that happened when she was eight!

So when Palin accuses Barack of "not seeing the same America as you and me," maybe she is referring to an America without Alaska. In any case, isn't it time the media start giving equal time to Palin's buddy list of anti-American bombers and other radical associates?

Bill Ayers, formerly of the

Bill Ayers, formerly of the Weathermen, is a distinguished professor at the University of Illinois at Chicago. He's received numerous awards, accolades and recommendations from politicians, faculty, and other organizations for his work on urban educational reform. If he's a terrorist, then in the mindset of the New G.O.P., all public school teachers might be terrorists, and anyone that goes to high school or college, or has a high school diploma or a college degree through the public educational system may be a terrorist supporter. As a result -- as they yell out at the Palin rallies: you are a terrorist and you must be killed. Who is Bill Ayers? Check it out, on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bill_Ayers

What I think is the point of

What I think is the point of the Palin's support and membership of the AIP is that it should have disqualified her immediately. I knew about this the first or second day of her being picked. If I did have any respect left for McCain, I totally lost it when he didn't throw her overboard when this information came out, and why didn't he know this. LIKE HE SAID ON THE DAVID LETTERMAN SHOW, "he screwed up." PALIN DOESN'T EVEN WANT TO BE PART OF THE USA and she is in a position to possibly run our government?!!? Who else might qualify if she does, Putin, Sarkoszy, Harper, Burlosconi, a leader from Germany or Japan, China etc., etc.???

Bringing up this topic is as

Bringing up this topic is as helpful to the debate as bringing up Rev. Wright. Fascinating as an association between the candidate and others among their supporters. An influence. But both topics are red herrings. Frankly, I think we'd learn more about the candidate by having them post their college grades and course titles for us to read. Why is it that McCain's having a reputation for having lousy grades and a surly attitude got a wink-wink, nudge-nudge at the Repubican Convention? Do we need another academic noodle in the White House? Why is it that Sarah Palin, the journalism major, cannot cite what mags and newspapers she reads, nor any court cases? She probably didn't read the prospectus for the Alaskan Independence Party either!

Pacific States seceding?

Pacific States seceding? Ecotopia lives!

Palin believe in Alaskan

Palin believe in Alaskan first otherwise she wouldn't have attended the AIP's conventions.

The english call it the

The english call it the "loyal opposition", correct?

I find the post from the

I find the post from the person who wants independence for Alaska interesting. Being from California, we easily could be the 7th richest country in the world if independent. I have been so angry at what has happened to the USA under the Bushista regime that I've conjured up an idea of the Pacific Coast states seceding and joining Canada (well, maybe So Cal can rejoin Mexico, and they'd get the Dodgers and Chargers), so we can have government-paid health care and not have our tax dolars go to Washington to fund overseas ars for natural resources of other countries. The so-called blue states are pretty much coastal east and west and even around the Great Lakes, and if we all left to join Canada, that would leave the inner-mountain west, southern and mid west states to go on as the Kapitalist-Christianist States of Amerika that they seem to want to be!

One thing Robert's excelleny

One thing Robert's excelleny article fails to mention is that Vogler was scheduled in 1993 to address the United Nations to denounce American tyranny. He died instead. He was able to do so because he was being sponsored by Iran. That/s right: Sarah Palin spoke repeatedly at the conventions of, and Todd was a longtime member of, a treasonous organization with ties to Iran. Current, international terror. Not 40-year old domestic terror.

What makes the Weathermen so

What makes the Weathermen so detestable? Go look up Thomas Jefferson's quote on what it takes to keep the country truly free. "...Blood of patriots and tyrants...". Since when is dissent ILLEGAL? Vietnam war Good, Weathermen, bad? As to the AIP..... it's a political hot potato that no one is willing to pick up, that's for sure, But I'm sorry, Gentlepersons.... that's also covered..... Seceding Continental Congress..... Didn't we take Civics in GRADE SCHOOL? Please people, it may not be a good idea, but to paint such a thought (and certainly coming from and because of the ideas behind, the AIP it is a bad idea in that case) as against what WE SHOULD and have every right to fight for, as Un-American, is misinformed at the very least!

Great article.

Great article.

Thank you, Bobby, for

Thank you, Bobby, for bringing this up. Now, I want to turn on CNN or MSNBC and hear an honest report of the Palin's involvement in AIP. This is scary information and should sway more than a few undecided voters.

Oops! I called you Senator

Oops! I called you Senator Kennedy in my first post. I think I was dreaming! Since I'm here, I'll take this time to thank you for all of the work you do for the People, Robert. You have tried your hardest to inform the citizens about the criminals in our government. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_XgkeTanCGI&NR=1 I just watched this video of Naomi Wolf in which she said that a coup took place on October 1st, and if Americans don't arrest their criminal leaders RIGHT NOW, the coup will succeed. Here is another video of Representative Brad Sherman on CNN telling of being threatened with Martial Law in private meetings if they didn't pass the bail out bill. NOW is the time for action! The People have to do it because Congress can't and/or won't. If there is not a major revolution of the People to arrest our criminal leaders, and they declare Martial Law, using the economic crisis for an excuse, America will be Amerika by the end of the year. I am not paranoid. I am just well informed, and unless we get our District Attorneys and Attorneys General across the land to arrest the leaders who are systematically subverting the Constitution, we are all doomed to live under a police state for who knows how long. The Army Times reported that US Troops have been deployed on US SOIL for crowd control and "subduing unruly individuals." The 'Soldier's Creed' in which soldiers pledge allegiance to doing the right thing to completing the mission. http://www.tewahanui.info/wordpress2/?p=761 So, if you believe that soldiers won't do what they're told, think again. They're under law now because of the Defense Authorization Act gives Bush power over their legal duty to defend and protect the Constitution. It's really, really ugly, folks, and unless we do something NOW it's gone, probably forever, because once they finally get a hold of it, they're never going to let go, and the People will be defenseless to do a thing about it. I have never looked at the Alaska Independence Party IDEA with the fondness I have for it this morning. Seceding from the American Empire has never looked like such a good idea, especially after watching Naomi Wolf, Robert Fisk, and other American patriots who are continually ignored by the mainstream media as well as mainstream Amerika.

I think it was 1997 Bill

I think it was 1997 Bill Ayers was awarded an honor"Chicago Citizen of the Year", if not for him and his group our Vietnam wall of 58,000 dead would be much longer.

Obama and Biden need to talk

Obama and Biden need to talk about the AIP. It's not mud slinging. It's information the people need to know, since when McCain becomes disabled or to befuddled to perform, Palin would, God help us, take over. How can anyone who gives major speeches before the AIP convention, in 2006 and then this very year claim to be a truly loyal American citizen? And if the media will hype the flimsy Ayers connection, why will they not at least cover the AIP/Todd Palin connection? There's more than a coincidental relationship, since they probably sleep together - they make kids, don't they?

It's who controls the make

It's who controls the make up of the FCC. That's the real issue of why the corporate media slants their reporting. Should a non-Republican president take office he will appoint an FCC that could very well revisit the idea of media consolidation. If they rule to turn back the clock this will cost Rupert Murdoch and the others multiple millions. They have a very real financial interest in having McCain be president. Please stop writing articles expressing puzzlement at what the corporate media choose to cover! Instead write "Once again, FOX (or Time/Warner, etc.) has shown their fear of a Democratic-appointed FCC by..." and then state how they slanted the news. It's actually a simple concept: Follow the Money.

On this point and the

On this point and the deplorable 'swift boat' episode, JFK is no doubt correct. Still, I wonder why these sorts of attacks, rather than clear and honest discussion of policy and the principles that will guide them, get so much airplay in our elections. Personally, I side for the left-OUT Americans who have continued to dare to think that money and its accumulation ought not to the the central purpose of a great civilization. Anderson Cooper, whose show I often find interesting, I am ashamed of you on this one. Think about what you are exchanging for your salary.

Well it is about time we

Well it is about time we hear about her buddy's!

I forgot to say that I am

I forgot to say that I am from Alaska and with the gutting of the US Constitution over the last few years, and the betrayal of both the Republican and Democratic Parties, I agree with Joe Vogler about Alaska's secession from the Union. I'm a non-partisan, not a member of the AIP, but America has become such a scumbag empire that cares more about bailing out yacht owners than home owners, and more about wealth care than health care, I'd LOVE for Alaska to become its own nation! America refused spend seven billion a year on health care to help children, but willingly spends 11 billion dollars a month to bomb them. And last month, both the Reps and Dems poured ANOTHER $612 billion down the war hole with no end of the illegal invasion/occupation in sight. So yeah, I'd love to cut my ties with a nation that's hell bent on total global domination and the destruction of everything decent, like health care, environmental care, education, peace, and most important of all, civil and human rights.

i was wondering how these

i was wondering how these comments were not more revealed in the public press. How is it that the neo-cons have such a hold on the interest of the American people and the public media. It would seem that the material that is revealed in your column ought to be page one material for the N Y Times.... We are being held hostage by the media. In an attempt to be fair and just the left wing has been relegated to apologizing for who it is, who we are while the right wing appears to have the ear of even liberal sympathizers. We see the same thing in public debate. Obama is such a gentleman that he allows sand to be thrown in his face by the republican bully-teams without responding in kind....Why are we not hearing more about just how discusted we are by the Palin tactics that are the female version to Geo. Bush. I am disgusted by Roveian republican tactics that bury us as we politely dust off our jackets and talk about the issues. Are we not sick enough of Geo. Bush ways to make our feelings known

Kind of ironic that their

Kind of ironic that their symbol is a polar bear.

I've been door knocking a

I've been door knocking a bit and people are wondering about this connection and thinking that the Ayers issue has been over played. The people are curious about the AIP and not that interested in Ayers.

The corporate media IS the

The corporate media IS the Republican and wealthy Democrat party bullhorn. Defense contractors and other fat corporate interests sit on the boards of major media, which are owned by corporations who have everything to gain from keeping the public ignorant and voting the Republican agenda. The Democrats have joined the ruling party. There is no party for the people any more! Isn't it obvious?! We elected them in '04 and '06 to go in and clean house and the first thing Pelosi did was take impeachment off the table. One lone Democrat, Dennis Kucinich introduced Articles of Impeachment for both lying war criminals, Dick Cheney and then George Bush, but the Democrats sat on their hands and did NOTHING to support this courageous move. Then, when this patriot and stellar Representative ran for president, the Democratic party virtually ignored him. When he spoke at the DNC, the Democrats stripped part of his speech that said instead of getting eight more years, the Republican party should be getting ten to twenty. The Democrats are NOT there for the people and haven't been since they rolled over and played dead when the Republicans STOLE the 2000 election. My Friends, the Democrats are NOT our friends any more than the Republican are. Get a clue! We've been abandoned by our Democratic Party Leaders who nearly all voted for the Patriot Act, the Iraq War Resolution, the Military Commissions Act, the Defense Authorization Act, and now what Ron Paul and Dennis Kucinich call the thought-crime bill, The Homegrown Terrorist and Violent Radicalization Prevention Act. The House voted 406-6 on that last one. So, Senator Kennedy, what do you have to say for your party, who virtually always supports the Republican agenda? You supported Clinton, not Obama, the best person for the job, especially after the fiasco of Bill's presidency which "reformed" welfare, invaded a nation for oil reasons who wasn't a threat to us and made a mockery of the office with his Kennedyesque womanizing behavior. It's not the medias' fault that Democrats are such scumbags these days. So what are the People to do when their party abandons them?

It is refreshing to see left

It is refreshing to see left wing material, but we do not see it in the media nearly as much as we ought to. The neo-con are always complaining that they are mis treated in the media and they now have the media eating out of their hand....Has anyone watched the sunday morning talk show on t.v. lately. They are irrelevant. The speak of the recent economic mess as something the left wing is as responsible for as the republicans who ushered in the entire era of trickle-down economics..I am fed-up with the media

Thanks for saying what the

Thanks for saying what the media should be touting, when they want to quote Palin & McBush on there sliming. Palins work for the seceding movement is very resent an involves a direct family member. No comparison Ayers commercial is another ridiculous act by a desperate McSame.

MSM should have its wings

MSM should have its wings clipped for acting like partisan hacks and promoting the talking points of either party..The news media has to be objective and while corporate ownership is a fact of life, the Airwaves are public domain..You can watch the newspapers fall away in importance as the internet takes on the job of reporting the facts. Palin has more skeletons in her closet than most politicians and her brand is familiar. Attack, lie, exaggerate, draw phony conclusions and forget the ethics and moral leadership qualities we should be able to count on in our leaders. After she goes packing back to Alaska, I trust that the dirt on her will all be revealed and we can all draw a breath of relief. Great article RFK, keep up the good work and please sponsor the legislation which will reverse the trend of Corporate media running a misinformation machine.

Fair is fair and this

Fair is fair and this article written by the distinguished Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. is outstanding. I applaud you, sir and hope that as you say the media start sharing Ms. Palin's rather dubious connections. Their reporting as of late has been pitifully lacking a "fair & balanced" approach to presenting the "facts". Thank you for sharing your thoughts about this matter, Mr. Kennedy.

Why do we tolerate a foreign

Why do we tolerate a foreign run right wing propaganda network spewing, with arrogance and impunity, lies and slanders to the American people? The next Congress, hopefully Democratic, should repeal the honorary citizenship bestowed upon Rupert Murdoch by corporate stooge Ronald Reagan and the criminal organization that goes under the name of the Republican Party. Murdoch and his minions should be deported forthwith to inflict their Goebbelistic agenda on their own country. Their Fox Propaganda network, including its newspapers and radio and cable TV outlets, should be scattered to the winds, redistributed to local community organizations and public broadcasting groups, auctioned off to reputable and reformed media owners. Roger Ailes and his cronies should be arrested and tried for treason and election fraud in 2000 and 2004, along with other crimes. Corporate ownership of media should be ended, giant right wing propaganda conglomerates like Clear Channel should be broken up under antitrust laws, and media companies should severed from corporate control and return to being free standing news and entertainment companies required by the FCC, under a revised fairness doctrine, to provide ALL sides of an issue, including third party views.

We have to keep in mind who

We have to keep in mind who owns -- and wields -- the power. Publishers and media owners (think Murdoch) have no obligation to J-School precepts of fairness. They act for their advertisers, not for their readers or viewers or any other entity in the public interest. As long as the big money flows from corporate sources, the ink and the vocals will flow back in their direction. A third party will not help -- the big money won't get to it. A huge factor in this bias is the money it takes to get ads on the air or into print. While media outlets are privately owned, the broadcasters are the beneficiaries of federal electromagnetic "channels," which are publicly owned. But as long as the government lets stations charge fortunes per minute, with no return obligation to the public interest, both politicians and journalists will be compelled to continue serving at their command.

Yes, the Weathermen group

Yes, the Weathermen group was detestable, and the fact that Obama was 8 is never mentioned by Pallin and company. And what explains all the good Christians believing in reformation and redemption as they do who are making it sound as if Ayers was in the bomb business, when he was a respected educator when he and Senator Obama met. The AIP is truly creepy, a bad association. Much more media coverage is needed.

Thank you...your father and

Thank you...your father and uncle would be proud of you, Mr. Kennedy, as am I. But...I sit in fear, as I have for months but no more than now, that Senator Obama will meet the same fate as both your father and uncle: that he will be killed by the rabid hatred perpetuated by Sarah Palin and her like. I agree with you that the media must bring this AIP affiliation to the forefront now, but I must say, it is so much more appalling in light of the shouts from McCain/Palin supporters at an October 9 rally, saying about Obama, "Kill him! Kill him!" This, too, should be talked about, and the Republican Party and Sarah Palin should be sanctioned for insighting such hate-speak. There are laws against this, aren't there. I continue to pray for the safety of Obama, the success of his election, and the wellness of our mortally wounded democracy. Again, thank you for your stewardship! Professor Fandel

There is one central reason

There is one central reason why dishonest and irrelevant nonsense continues to gain traction during American elections instead of thoughtful debate about substantive issues (the economy, national health and energy policies, public education, government corruption, electoral fraud, etc.) It's the fact that news reporting in general and investigative journalism in particular in the United States is at its lowest point in decades and is completely substandard when compared to other western industrialized nations (UK, Canada, Western Europe). Do the math: bad reporting = an uniformed citizenry. Couple that with a shameful amount of theology mixed in with politics and public policy, and the reality that a large percentage of Americans read too little, listen to pundits too much and have an uniformed and provincial attitude towards how government ought to function, and you see what you get -- people like Bush, Cheney and Rove using the country like a $50 hooker.

Robert Kennedy, you of all

Robert Kennedy, you of all people ought to be telling of your concern about the larger problem, where both Democrats and Republicans have tossed their concerns about the viability of our system to the winds. It all goes back to Wall Street's abortive fascist plan to seize the White House in the 1930's. The plan was thwarted, but the intent didn't die. They simply changed strategy. Over time, they would BUY the government. And that is precisely what happened. Beyond their wildest dreams both the White House and the Congress have been bought, and legislation is now being written by the tens of thousands of paid lobbtists in Washington. The people are no longer represented, and the present debacle is the inevitable outcome of unfettered frenzy at the feeding trouugh.

Thank you RFK Jr, for this

Thank you RFK Jr, for this info on Palin's relatively recent involvement with AIP. While I was surprised to find that I could support the majority of the AIPs platform positions -- since I am a native Hawaiian and have long had mixed feelings about the overthrow of the Hawaiian monarchy -- it's plain to me that the recent negative rhetoric about Obama and Bill Ayers pales in comparison to Palin's involvement with AIP. What Ayers did was forty years ago. He seems to have successfully redirected his passion for activism in positive ways — working against poverty and supporting education programs as well as being a professor. I myself had a business acquaintance 20-years ago who, unknown to me, was an FBI fugitive from an event of national prominence during the 60's, but he was the nicest guy, gentle and focused on living life and his business. I read years later that he had turned himself in. In closing, I think it is a real shame that both Palin and McCain think it is okay to bend the truth to their needs in ways that incite violence and hatred. When will we grow up as a society and do the right thing? Thanks, Kimo

What took you so long in

What took you so long in bringing this up? It has been on the internet since the time Palin was announced as VP candidate. I respect Obama for not bringing it up personally but somehow the word has to get out. Right-wing organizations have done much more in terms of threatening the lives and well-being of others than the Black Panthers, La Raza, SDS or the their radical wing- the Weathermen. McVeigh did it in one fell-swoop. The anti-choice fanatics who murder for Christ, and now the AIP. Rabid is one word that comes to mind

With the world at the

With the world at the financial brink among other details, and its own assessment, journalism should decide whether to emphasize priority, or pimple.

I also thank you, Mr.

I also thank you, Mr. Kennedy, for speaking out about this. Like many (most?) Americans, it never occurred to me to call John McCain's Vietnam "heroism" into question, but anyone out there reading this should vist the website www.vietnamveteransagainstmccain.com, specifically: http://www.vietnamveteransagainstjohnmccain.com/cin_hopper_video.htm and click on the Interview with Patty Hopper. It appears that John McCain is a traitor, and he wasn't eight years old at the time. John McCain and the Palin(s) are frauds.

Your pinpointing the media

Your pinpointing the media collaboration/participation in these hypocritical and nasty smear campaigns over the years is on the money. Tell me. What has the Democratic Party done about the media all these years, if not support continuing consolidation and not objecting toforeign ownership nor connections to large industrial and military interests? I admire that you, Robert Kennedy, have gone the mile on election fraud, but waht about the party you and your family symbolize? BOTH major parties have collaboratedwith limiting the scope of information and debate, justifying the homogenizing of public opinion without healthy injections of uncompromised or alternative viewpoints, such as Green, Libertarians, or Nader. If we have vote fraud today it's because the Democrats did not fight back. The bailout and the one-week scramble/heist of America hear NO alternative views beyond thos of have lied to us for years. This Alaska business is the result of this reduced "playing field" of ideas, and just small potatoes compared to the hijacking of America its ideas and ideals perpetrated both major parties who scrape and bow before the corporate altar of big capital. Complain if you wish, and I join you, but what how can you do so from a position that continually validates the Democratic caving to all the illegal shenanigans and outright crimes of the Bush Administration? If you were to become a Green, for example, suddenly you sould see change, open up a few eyes, and crack open the den of lies.

Aren't there any 3rd parties

Aren't there any 3rd parties (Move-On?) willing to make a commercial about this? Obama can't. He's trying to prove that he's ready to be president, and as a Democrat has to play the grown up to fibber mccain's spoiled-child act. If he doesn't, the media will accuse him of stuping to his level, you know, "he's just a child! YOU should know beter!".

Thank you Robert Kennedy,

Thank you Robert Kennedy, this needed to come out. The Ayers connection to Obama is rediculous but one could say that the Palins are more interested in Alaska First.
