He Won Because He Speaks of Peace

He won because he spoke about peace and people listened. That is rare. The whole world listened, and is still listening to this man who speaks of peace, who clearly believes in it, although his actions don't always seem to move towards that goal. Think of how few people have spoken about peace, from the heart, and had the world pay attention. It happens rarely. And it's part of why we fall so short of peace.

If we are not listening to words about peace, we are not thinking about peace. And if we are not listening to someone speak about peace, we are listening to someone else, instead; some other preacher, preaching something other than peace. We will be thinking about some philosophy other than peace. And if we are not thinking about peace, we will surely never live in peace, which requires intention.

Surely any politician can fool a country; every country has been fooled many times over. But don't take the entire world for a fool. The human race is not so easily duped. If a large majority of mankind likes this man, it's clear he is a good man. They know that when he speaks of peace, he has a vision of it.

Imagine a well-intentioned leader in a fledgling country where so many others only want power. Others are well intentioned enough, but lazy, or don't believe peace can be accomplished, so they resign themselves to not strive for it. All you have is your hopes, and the models you see elsewhere, in other countries; it can be done, you say. We can move my country towards peace, you believe. But who is your leader? Where do you look for those models? There's a reason we call our President "the leader of the free world." Like it or not, America is the "shining light," the beacon of a brighter future.

But what then if that leader of the free world doesn't really believe in, understand or speak from the heart about peace? What hope is there then?

The world was not fooled by the last administration. It knew the man in America's highest position was not an authentic speaker of peace.

There was little hope for the world during that time. There was nowhere to point to as a place where those with an authentic hunger for peace were leading the way. So it was very difficult to focus on peace, or see a picture of it in one's head.

Let us honor Barack Obama for helping us think about peace once again. And let us hope that with this leader as a - yet imperfect - guiding star for the entire human race, perhaps we are back on that road.

Words are meaningless.

Words are meaningless. Actions do the real speaking. How many men are dying in combat under his watch? If he really wants peace he needs to bring the soldiers home.

Oh groan! 600 Billion just

Oh groan! 600 Billion just passed through our congress on the way to War Inc. Peacemaker?

So... the moral of the story

So... the moral of the story is that the world was not fooled by the last administration, but we are very easily fooled by this one. Smoke and mirrors...

'If a large majority of

'If a large majority of mankind likes this man, it's clear he is a good man. They know that when he speaks of peace, he has a vision of it.' In a world where there are those so eager to criticize, I agree. Achieving that vision will take more than 9 months and more than 1 man.

Thank you for this. It means

Thank you for this. It means a great deal, and I think in an ADHD country we forget that things can't happen "right now" and we all need to learn to control our impulses and be thoughtful. I hope our president has to courage and support to continue to work towards peace.

Why not? What harm can come

Why not? What harm can come from honoring Barack Obama for winning the Nobel Peace Prize in any case? He himself said he was surprised and humbled, so there you go, Dear Detractors! After Dennis Kucinich, only Barack Obama has had the guts to actually speak of peace as a viable alternative. Who did he choose as the one person from history he would like to meet? Mahatma Gandhi, the apostle of peace himself! We ought to see these people for the immense difference they bring to our perceptions of peace. The USA is hardly weaker for embracing peace. This approach will make it incredibly stronger and put it on a moral ground so high that it will be hard to argue against.

Hooray Andrew! Daring to

Hooray Andrew! Daring to celebrate this peace prize in the face of leftist snarling and cynicism. In order to work for peace, one needs hope and confidence, you have shown both, and so has Barack Obama. I wish those on the left who profess to be for the people would do the same.

This op ed article indicates

This op ed article indicates how insular people in the US are. People have been speaking for peace and people--although apparently no one who matters to the writer--have listened. Has the writer not noticed how many nations were not part of Bush's now pretty much defunct "coalition of the willing"? Others are speaking, others are listening. Just because the so-called "leaders" (whether or not legally elected) are war wackos & the others too weakwilled to say no to them and we apparently have a lust for death & killing of others among many in the population, doesn't mean that's how all nations, leaders & citizens/residents feel. Or behave. Time for the US to start paying attention to the rest of the world, and not think the world begins & ends w/itself and all others are just followers or something to be "shocked & awed" (that worked really well, didn't it?)

So America is a "shining

So America is a "shining light"? Really? It is time to put that idea to rest. America is the most violent, war-mongering, destructive society ever to exist. If Obama reins in the military-industrial complex, I'll believe he is a man of "peace." Actions speak a lot louder than words. The first place he could start would be ending arms sales to Israel.

Thank you Andrew. I agree

Thank you Andrew. I agree that Obama has put peace back in the lexicon and isn't shy about speaking up when opportunity presents. Those who dismiss this award don't have a clue what a commitment to working for peace in our world means. It is a lifetime commitment to a goal that may not be realized in the activist's lifetime. It is facing failure and not turning aside. It is a lot of small steps. Obama is taking those steps and sometimes they aren't so small. In over 30 years of advocating and working for peace...Obama is the most powerful ally I have ever seen. I'm not wearing blinders and I am letting him know where I feel he is wrong or falling short but... I'm not sure I thought I would live to see the day when a US President would advocate for nuclear disarmament let alone bring peace and the possibility of peace to the table. Look...we're talking peace and so are a lot of people who've never considered doing so = words are important. Let's keep talking peace.

Funny but the comments here

Funny but the comments here in TO are usually from progressives and liberals. Just because we voted for him doesn't mean we can't hold him responsible for his promises. Lets count together, how many promises he made on the campaign trail has he kept. "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" - nope. "Close Guantanamo" - nope. "Real health care reform", - nope, "Transparent Government" - nope. "Rendition" - nope. Soooo, just what has he done?

To tell the truth, I don't

To tell the truth, I don't know what you mean by "peace." But if it makes you feel better to say that word over and over again ...

If you can't think it, you

If you can't think it, you can't make it happen. So if you are the war president, you will have war. If you are the peace president, there is a chance it will happen. But it will be a fight to take down the military industrial complex. Look how hard it is to get universal healthcare. It doesn't easier. We've been through years of saber-rattling. The power-hungry are not going to turn in their swords without a fight.

"The human race is not so

"The human race is not so easily duped." But evidently the Nobel Commission is! However, this is good because it will further delegitimize Nobel prizes, which are generally handed out to the biggest leftists.

Drone attacks kill innocent

Drone attacks kill innocent civilians in Pakistan and Obama is not ending them. He could though. Are there reasons to give him the Nobel Prize? Maybe. Are there reasons to NOT give him the Nobel Peace Prize? Definitely. And that is enough reason to find someone more suitable to give the award to. There are many people out there really fighting for real peace.

Obama has been trying to

Obama has been trying to communicate with Iran for one thing. Rather than just putting up his fists against them.

Let Limbaugh, Beck, Boehner,

Let Limbaugh, Beck, Boehner, Palin and the rest keep insulting the (FINALLY!) duly elected President of the United States. Let them continue to mock the sentiments and insights of people of vision around the globe. Let them keep revealing their jealous rage and their disrespect for all-things-Obama! And, in the end, let them rest in their own private hell, what hatred and greed abound.

If the speeches about peace

If the speeches about peace are what got him the award, then maybe his speech writer should have gotten the award - or maybe the teleprompter should have gotten it. Regardless, the nominations were closed before Obama had been in office for 2 weeks. He had done nothing and spoke of little at that time. The Nobel Peace Prize has lost any significance at this point.

We need action, not just

We need action, not just words!

Obama makes pretty words-

Obama makes pretty words- BUT at the same time his imperialist troops slaughter innocent people! for true PAZ, tioche, Mexico
