Greg Palast and Robert F. Kennedy Jr. believe that the 2008 elections have already been stolen. What's an American to do given these circumstances? They suggest: "Steal it back".

Palast, an investigative journalist, and Kennedy, a voting rights attorney, paired up to create a nonpartisan voter guide that illustrates the six ways that American votes will be stolen this election and seven ways to steal them back.

You may ask who's stealing your votes. Palast and Kennedy believe that the Help America Vote Act (HAVA), created in 2002, is one of the main reasons votes are systematically being stolen. Secretaries of state attempting to comply with HAVA are purging voters from the registration rolls and blocking new ones from registering. The purging occurs if a voter's name does not match a government database.

Those who are at most risk for having their vote stolen are new voters, people of color, low-income, elderly and swing state voters, Palast told Truthout.

In 2006, Palast says that 40 percent of citizens who were purged from the voter rolls in California had Islamic, Vietnamese, Chinese and Hispanic names. These names were at most risk for misspellings.

The Steal Back Your Vote Guidelines promote the importance of going to the secretary of state Web site for your state to confirm that you are registered ahead of the election.

The New York Times appeared to confirm Palast and Kennedy's findings on mass voter purges in its report last week titled "States' Actions to Block Voters Appear Illegal". The newspaper found that tens of thousands of eligible voters were being illegally purged ahead of the 2008 elections.

In the crucial swing states of Indiana, Nevada, North Carolina and Ohio, The New York Times reported that Social Security databases are being used to verify voters, as opposed to more accurate state databases. Federal law requires Social Security databases to be used for verification only as a last resort.

The swing states of Michigan and Colorado are also violating federal law, according to The New York Times, because they are removing voters from the registration rolls within 90 days of the presidential election.

When a name has been purged from the voter rolls, election workers will hand out a provisional ballot. However, Palast points to 1.1 million provisional ballots that went uncounted in the 2004 elections as proof that provisional ballots often go uncounted.

"Once you sign that provisional ballot, the chances are officially one in three that your ballot will be thrown in the garbage can," said Palast.

In their guide, Palast and Kennedy write that a provisional ballot will most often render a vote uncounted. They suggest seeking adjudication on the spot, by calling a voter's rights hotline instead of accepting and signing the provisional ballot.

"Don't go postal," says Palast, urging voters not to mail in their ballot.

Palast told Truthout: "All you need is the most minor error, like you didn't use your middle initial in your registration; not enough postage cost a third of a million votes in the US the last time around because most ballots are two stamps, not one. There's a million ways to not count your vote on a mail-in; don't do it."

The other suggestions in the "Steal Back Your Vote" guide include voting early, getting involved in voter-registration and get-out-the-vote organizations, and pursuing legal action if disenfranchised.

Palast and Kennedy will be following the 2008 elections as they unfold, including publishing reports in Rolling Stone and BBC news.

Women who have married and

Women who have married and changed their last name since they registered to vote will be unable to vote in some states which require the name on the various pieces of ID to match. Is there a list of the voting requirements from each state? Perhaps it is not too late to save a few votes.

The Help America Vote Act

The Help America Vote Act and some studies of voting systems have recommended mandatory paper trails for automated voting systems. Such paper print-outs of votes entered will, it is claimed, allow voters to verify that their vote has been entered properly and provide data for recounts in case of disputed results. The basic assumption of these recommendations is wrong. The focus should not be on facilitating recounts in case of failed initial vote counts. The focus should be on assuring that the initial counts are correct and can be trusted without resorting to challenges, recounts, and the potential litigation that surrounds those events. The clearest evidence of a voter's intent is a properly designed paper ballot with choices marked by the voter's own hand. And if manual recounts of paper records are the method believed to be most trustworthy in cases of disputed tallies, then why should those methods not be used in the first count and organized in such a way as to avoid disputed results altogether? In addition, states and localities have spent large sums of money to install electronic voting systems and will continue to invest significant sums in verification and quality control procedures for automated voting systems. These expenditures primarily benefit the manufacturers of the automated systems at the expense of voter confidence in results. A manual tabulation system would avoid the vast majority of such expenses, with costs being restricted to printing of paper ballots and the boxes for collecting them securely, and the actual tabulation and verification of votes normally done by volunteers. The use of standard spreadsheet formats for tabulating precinct results and calculating summations avoids the uncertainty of custom software designed for operating automated voting systems. Spreadsheet and database programs including Microsoft Excel as well as others are readily available, have been thoroughly tested and demonstrated to perform calculations accurately, and run on inexpensive general-purpose computers. In addition, the availability of voting results in spreadsheet or tab-delineated table format allows for manual summation or summation with the use of hand-held calulators that have also been thoroughly tested and demonstrated to perform correctly. With election results tabulated in spreadsheet format, there can be no question that vote totals have been calculated correctly.

Josef Stalin, dictator of the USSR for decades, reportedly stated, "It's not the voting that counts, it's the vote counting that makes the difference". California is about 40%

California is about 40% non-white, so Palast's observation that "40 percent of citizens who were purged from the voter rolls in California had Islamic, Vietnamese, Chinese and Hispanic names" does not indicate a gross inequity in voter disqualification, as he implies. (To be fair, this does not necessarily negate his other assertions.)

I strongly suspect that this

I strongly suspect that this has been going on for a long, long time--unbeknown to any of us, of course!

If there is an exit poll

If there is an exit poll outside your voting place take part in it. The exit polls may have some meaning, as part of other efforts-this time.

I vehemently disagree with

I vehemently disagree with Palast telling you not to vote by mail because the one entity not even state or federal government has under it`s thumb is the postmaster general all you need do to GUARANTEE your mail in vote counts is send it return receipt signature required then deducting postage on your federal taxes gets the IRS in play as well and everybody knows the tax man requires you to keep everything for a minimum of 7 years...rules are rules and when bound by the strictest applicable regulations out there WE THE PEOPLE WIN...PERIOD!

I have worked with tens of

I have worked with tens of thousands of Latin Americans, both in Mexico and Latin America, as well as in the states of Texas, California and Washington, as a U.S. government employee, state employee, and county employee. In innumerable cases, immigrants arriving in the U.S. have significant confusion -- not caused by them -- but caused by multiple national, state and local bureaucracies. It is very common that immigrants to the U.S. very quickly, within weeks or months of arrivale, have a U.S. immigration document, a social security card, and a driver's license or state ID card with different versions of their names. This can be further complicated by state welfare records and other records with further variations on their names. For those from Latin America, they may quickly have a version of their name where their paternal last name becomes their middle name or initial and their maternal last name becomes their last name. A good example of bureaucratic incompetence was the Social Security Administration's handling of my wife's SS card. In the end she had four cards with four different names -- one because the SSA processor insisted in violation of law that my wife should carry my last name which is not her legal name and the last two because apparently the employee was semi-literate and misspelled her name (twice). In the end, we could not even get the Social Security Administration to take the three wrong cards back, with everyone from local to region administrators stating that they were not sensitive documents and telling us to just throw them away. This name confusion, which is often the result of bureaucratic bungling and not any error on the part of individuals, should not be reason for disenfranchisement.

I just voted in the Canadian

I just voted in the Canadian election which from start to finish lasted 5 weeks. If I did not have the requisite id, a friend ho is registered and had proper id could swear an oath that I am who I claim and I could vote. We still use paper ballots; no vote fraud, no vote stealing.

I have strongly suspected

I have strongly suspected that this has been happening for a long, long time-unbeknown to the voters, of course!

... well, whaddaya know, the voting system, the infrastructure, is rotten. Thanks for pointing it out in such detail, really, I mean it. I like Mr. Palast's retro-fifties look too. But honestly the U.S. presidential vote was originally fixed in 2000, cemented in 2004 and now, 2008, the lid on the coffin for democracy America will be nailed shut and the poor stiff buried. Good riddance, honestly! America doesn't need this fakey show vote. What America needs is a revolution. But by whom? Me, youm? It's much more comfortable to pretend the system can be fixed. Gorbachev tried to fix the USSR and we've got Putin. Of course America will survive the collapse of the United States. But first the American people have to realize it's no use trying to fix what can't be fixed. That may take a while - or not! Pete in Stockholm

Ideas for Solutions are what

Ideas for Solutions are what we need, now. While it is sure that action must be taken to preserve our democratic election system, the big question of "How?" remains yet to be answered. For that matter, we need to figure out, “How,” to right, preserve and make sustainable our fundamental constitutional republic! More than likely, any effective and long lasting action will require the participation of an informed and active citizenry; or "the masses". Currently, there are many broad and active progressive efforts afoot involving scores of us in the blog-o-shpere, but we are still not effectively mobilizing the critical masses of so many potential 'boots already on the ground'. A great many of our citizens are angry and disaffected, having felt the pains of recession for an already extended period. These are the people with the most to gain and are probably primed for action. We need a strategy to reach these people in the streets; the people who are not already tuned into our channels in the online world, the people who are not accurately informed, the people who have not been motivated and organized into mobility. The key to effective action is to get enlightening video and blog information (like the content in Truthout, Alternet, Bill Moyers Journal and Democracy Now, Greg Palast and Kennedy pieces etc.) that reveals the truth about what is going on, into the faces of the masses. The only way American citizens will be motivated into action is if the masses; 1) become thoroughly offended by the realization of how they are being screwed, 2) realize that they have options do something to stop the screwing, 3) are guided toward coordinated leadership they can have faith in following within the security of numbers, and 4) can look forward to achieving some goals which they can tangibly perceive in their daily lives. Over the last several years, I’ve attempted, using whatever sources I have had available at the time, to create a strategic solution to address this issue of motivating the masses. My basic strategy is to use physical iconography, repetitively visible in the real world to guide people to a resource in the online world where they can quickly be linked to news, op ed, documentary, video and other media information regarding various topics of public importance as well as organizations and groups (local and national) organizing action surrounding those topics. In short, my idea is to create a physical visual interface to guide people towards relevant information to consider and act on. I’ve created a set of icons representing various issues and framed them in the iconography of the US flag. The initiative is called, MyAmericaToo.com, to remind people that this is their country too and that they have to accept responsibility and take action if they want it to be a place where they can live humanely and peacefully. I have produced tens of thousands of 30 ‘varieties’ of stickers and given these out and sold them online; everywhere I take them people get turned on by the idea and snap them up. I’ve invested quite a bit of my personal financial resources into the project and my partner ran away scared that he would be put on some terrorist watch list if he was associated with the project. None the less, I soldier on and can accept the losses especially if this initiative can eventually create a platform of unity or inspire a common template for the masses to coalesce around. If anybody else out there believes that this strategy can work, I’m offering to do whatever I can to share this strategy and spread it far and wide. Please feel free to use the format I developed, any of the icons, your own icons, my url, your own url so that we can have “something common” to unify around. I’ll send you the graphics files I have, even refer you to my manufacturer, anything as long as this strategy has a chance to catalyze a great American awakening. Unfortunately, my ex-partner was the ‘web guru’ of our team and he set up the system for creating new links to news, video and groups, in a very inefficient way. Since I’m only one person and I need to do other things to survive, there are very few links with up to the minute information, but what is there is good and still valid. Any programmers who can offer some insight to creating a more efficient system for updating content or any other aspects of the initiative, please feel free to contact me via the myamericatoo.com website. I’ll send anyone free stickers if you can pick up the postage. Be informed, be active, be well

Of course if you care for

Of course if you care for democracy - as Americans for the most part really do - you count paper ballots under all party supervision. Lets hope this election brings in a real democracy lover who will pass the requisite federal legislation. That of course requires an Obama win. This election is a once in a

This election is a once in a lifetime event. History in the making with tangible results appearing very quickly thereafter. I Fed-Exed a demand for absentee ballot and still no response from my home state ( Alaska as it is...Ironic,no?) and I'm afraid that my worst suspicions are coming true : I will not be able to vote..! I don't know if my votes were tossed in 2000 and 2004 but this time around I'm frantically calling home to try to verify if I'm even registered....no luck yet. I'm at a loss what to do next. I mean we're talking here about an election with extreme dire consequences for this PLANET : basically survival! And I don't think I'm being overly melodramatic...This is the "make or break" mother of all elections.

Oh yeak... I forgot to ask

Oh yeak... I forgot to ask whether "Come on..." was being ironic. I assume so for otherwise...geez... I can only imagine where he's coming from...can't be.

You DO have a choice, unless

You DO have a choice, unless you live in Oklahoma or South Dakota. If Congresswoman Cynthia McKinney's name is not on your ballot as the Green Party Candidate, you can write her in.

Isn't it ironic that we send

Isn't it ironic that we send people to third world countries all over the planet to make sure their elections are legitimate.

I brought this to the

I brought this to the attention of one of our local Florida HQ's. THis covers two separate issues: Provisional ballots and early voting. We are a state with early voting, but most people don't know about it. They don't know how or where to go, as their precinct is only open election day. Also, most people don't know that if there is a problem at the polling station with your ID or whatever, they may give you a provisional, but 3 million provisionals ballots were not counted last time. Each county/regional fieldperson in each state that has early voting should carry a bunch of BUSINESS CARDS. The front should be basic information on early voting and provisional ballots and on the back should be the early voting addresses in their region. If you go to vote early and are flagged for ID or some other reason and they want to give you a provisional ballot, you can say "no" and probably FIX what's wrong (need updated driver's license or whatever) and go back and vote. We DON'T WANT provisionals! With the huge number of new voters out there, this is an easy way to get the info out, AND they can carry it in their pocketbook or wallet. Cost for the cards is $60 for 5,000 cards from VISTAPRINT. Maybe you can get a local supporter to supply them free.

It seems crazy to me that

It seems crazy to me that although states administer their own voting programs, they seem to be falling in line around purchasing the electronic voting machines instead of going with verifiable paper ballots. Are there any states who have said "no" to electronic balloting in favor of paper balloting? And if not, why not?

Does anyone think that the

Does anyone think that the Republicans purposely placed the Ohio law allowing same day registration/voting on the books a few years ago as a setup strategy to be challenged later if the Repubs were down in the polls? It seems awfully fishy that a Republican legislative body would do anything to make voters lives easier without some nefarious plan behind it.

There is a fundamental

There is a fundamental problem and conflict of interest when each secretary of state, the official in charge of elections in their state, is an elected official and member of a political party. In 2000 and 2004 and now in 2008 we have individuals who are both the acting secretary of state and the heads of the state's Republican Party's campaign in support of the presidential candidate. We operate like an African country or Russia whereby the party that counts the votes for some reason always wins. Go figure! We need to take the voting process away from states control.

To answer "windskull" about

To answer "windskull" about the safety of mailing your ballot. Just because you have a signed receipt in hand does not mean your vote is counted. Read Palast's last book: one of the methods used was simply to dump ballots in the trash. How can you prove it was counted simply because you have the receipt stating it arrived at its destination?

To SlidingHomeInOregon:

To SlidingHomeInOregon: In the precinct in which I vote, for Snohomish County, WA, voting is done by the same method in-precinct as with absentee ballots: complete the arrow with black ink pointing to the candidate of your choice. Ballots are then tabulated via scanning equipment. So, with regard to a mailed ballot being dumped, what's to stop ballots filled out at the polling place from being dumped, all other factors being equal? Additionally, as far as I have been informed, Washington State operates its elections on a primarily mail-in ballot basis. Polling places are thus fewer because of this policy. If a large number of voters decided not to use their mail-in ballots, there would definitely be line problems at the scattered polling places available, at least in Western Washington. Granted, this is the situation for a single state, but I think the overarching paranoia Palast promotes regarding mail-in ballots is a little overblown, depending on in which state one is voting.

Others have expressed a

Others have expressed a suspicion that manipulation of the vote has been going on for some time without anyone knowing it. I agree and the first election which made me suspicious was the 1980 election of Ronald Ray-Guns. In my neighborhood in Philadelphia which supposedly voted overwhelmingly for Ronald you could ask people all day if they liked him and no one would say that they did.

In Oregon, we have been

In Oregon, we have been voting by mail in all elections for years now. The ballots are mailed out about 2 weeks before voting day. After filling them out by filling in an oval with black or dark blue ink by the chosen candidate or yes/no answer, the voter encloses the vote in a privacy envelope and signs the outside of the envelope which is then inserted into the mailing envelope. It is a simple inexpensive system which creates a paper trail and the ballots are kept for a while in case there is a recount requested in which case the party or group paying for it pays the cost of the second scan of the ballots. That can be for one county or several or for the whole state. So far it has been reported that o.7% of the ballots filled in and scanned had some sort of problem. I like the system. Simple, inexpensive, and repeatable should the need arise. Too bad more states don't give it a whirl.

Exactly why I pray to God ANYONE but Obama gets it.
